A quick scan of the interwebs shows most people describing Occupy Wall Street as more of a catch-all set of grievances rather than a specific program of demands. There is, however, a document claiming to be a working General Assemblies statement, written in familiar Declaration of Independence style. Here's how that document begins:
As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.
As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.
They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.
They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.
They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one's skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.
They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.
They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices.
They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.
They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.
While we wait for official demands (if they come at all), there have been plenty of suggestions, including by the protesters themselves. A quick survey of the proposals suggests that, as the above excerpt hinted at, the Ralph Nader 2000 campaign and the late-'90s Seattle-style anti-globalization movement are alive and well. First up, at the OccupyWallSt.org website, here's the first six of Lloyd J. Hart's proposed 13 demands:
Demand one: Restoration of the living wage. This demand can only be met by ending "Freetrade" by re-imposing trade tariffs on all imported goods entering the American market to level the playing field for domestic family farming and domestic manufacturing as most nations that are dumping cheap products onto the American market have radical wage and environmental regulation advantages. Another policy that must be instituted is raise the minimum wage to twenty dollars an hr.
Demand two: Institute a universal single payer healthcare system. To do this all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs and hand that money to wall st. investors.
Demand three: Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment.
Demand four: Free college education.
Demand five: Begin a fast track process to bring the fossil fuel economy to an end while at the same bringing the alternative energy economy up to energy demand.
Demand six: One trillion dollars in infrastructure (Water, Sewer, Rail, Roads and Bridges and Electrical Grid) spending now.

2. USE CONGRESSIONAL AUTHORITY AND OVERSIGHT TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE FEDERAL AGENCIES FULLY INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE THE WALL STREET CRIMINALS who clearly broke the law and helped cause the 2008 financial crisis […]

No more GE paying zero or negative taxes. Pass the Buffet Rule on fair taxation so the rich pay their fair share. (If we have a really had a good negotiating position and have the place surrounded, we could actually dial up taxes on millionaires, billionaires and corporations even higher…back to what they once were in the 50's and 60's.
Is this an accurate snapshot of what these protests are all about? Don't know, haven't been there. And no piece of writing can ever convey the spirit of dadaist hijinx that always animates such exercises. But the notions above are certainly familiar, mostly in a not-very-inspiring kinda way.

EACH of the demands is testament to the failure of the higher education system. Not a single of these represents any cogent thought process, just a sense of entitlement. "Free college education". Does that mean faculty will work gratis? The staff? Or, more likely, does it mean higher taxes for all...
Indeed when you make it $20 prices on everything move up in relation thus making $20 an hour just like $5 an hour in real spending terms. Of course I guess the next step is price controls because that always works. Geez folks this is just simple math here. WTF?
And as one article pointed out, they're using the restroom at the local McDonalds and eating donated Popeye's chicken while they protest. That'll really show those evil corporations. Geez...
john,
Not lifetime, just a four-year project. When you are marinated and baked in the toxic stew of higher education today, it's a wonder you get out with any brain cells left. The degreed, not to be confused with the educated, teach the clueless, counting on the young skulls to blissfully ignore the irony of how mommy and daddy's money (or loans) pay for admission to places where well-paid faculty can bitch about the evils of people who work for money.
It's probably something along the lines of "if you take away the need to work for a wage, people will find their inner creativity and find new solutions for living " --ignoring the fact that working for a living is pretty much ehat spurs people to creativity in the first place. These people don't seem to understand that someone, somewhere has to produce s o they can conzume (and i mean it here in a basic sense, not in the context of "consumerism.") Someone has to support the world, and --news flash!-- it's not struggling artists or community organizers who do it.
No shit. Someone has to clean up the garbage and grow the food and maintain the buildings and so forth. These dumb little bastards just think that shit just happens. They really are 10 year old children who don't understand that their parents don't own the electric company.
Maybe their parents do. They obviously have some source of money to sit around for weeks on end up there. I for one have to go to work, couldn't do that if I wanted to.
Part of what they don't get is that their parents DO own the electric company. Practically anyone with a 401(k) with mutual funds in it owns shares of the electric company...and the gas company...and the mining industry...and the medical industry...you get the point. The ownership (if not the leadership ) of the biggest corporations in the world is democratized and spread out among the workers. And it directly benefits those minority owners. The executives and managers who are so vilified make these salaries because, by and large, they MAKE MONEY FOR THE INVESTORS, namely the funds with which mommy and daddy have entrusted their retirement savings...to be able to retire in comfort without being a financial burden on their children. Think about that, kiddies, when you protest capitalism and investors.
wait, none of their demands say people should work for free, but these people think their liberal arts education with no specialization or any ability to create new goods and services, means their entry level labor is worth much more than minimum wage. Ahem... FUCK YOU! You want a living wage, offer me something worth that kind of money, if not go move back with mom and dad, your friends or go work in the midwest while you get some experience.
Hmmm...it'd be much easier to live off of mininum wage if all the various taxes, regulations, and assorted bullshit I'm sure most of these fucks love were not instituted in the first place. How was it that only 80 years ago poor immigrants were able to come to this country and build successful businesses, allowing their children to go to college within a generation when now parents have to work two jobs just to make sure they can keep the car fueled up while their kids take on loans they will paying off until they commit suicide?
I'm with you Kristen. The second I have to actually bathe, groom, and dress myself in a chafing tie so I can sit in a cubicle and not talk to soul, it's mother fucking work. It may not require physical labor, but it still sucks. Luckily I can quit and drive buses when I feel like it. Too bad I will never feel like it.
Hey, I have an English degree; and I understand what that means. It's that thing which you use to find that point in that grid thingy.
(Seriously though, getting an English degree is more fun than trying to get a job with an English degree--it's why I'm back in school pursuing a career in software engineering)
That's a spoofer, but it's a good question to ask why people should be forced to live or die in a secular society on the Protestant work ethic. Sure people should be rewarded for hard work and ingenuity, but if people choose not to participate in capitalism I don't see why that should be a death sentence.
Besides, our system doesn't reward hard work. It rewards already having wealth, which despite all your best efforts to claim otherwise, isn't the same thing.
Wasn't meant to be an insult. Society should definitely promote hard work and ingenuity as much as possible. But ours only does that to a limited extent. You're much more likely to succeed if you start from a place of success in the first place.
A lot of people work hard to make a better life for their kids. What's the point if folks like you want to take it away from them to give to lazy people who don't give a shit about their kids?
And that "limited extent" to which we reward hard work and ingenuity would naturally be the maximum earnings one is allowed to keep after paying sufficient tribute to our enlightened and benevolent leaders, right?
So society should promote hard work and ingenuity by giving you everything that you need to succeed so that no hard work or ingenuity is required. What's wrong with this picture?
"You're much more likely to succeed if you start from a place of success in the first place."
Really? Can you find anything that substantiates this statement? Or is it one more regurgitated talking point from you? What research I have actually seen shows an overwhelming majority of millionaires coming from non-millionaire households, unless you've got some different definition of success that you're using. Large amounts of wealth? High income levels? Shiny happy people holding hands?
You joke, but yeah, this is what a lot of people on the left believe. Check out the survey from a while back that was posted here; plenty of people on the left believe that people get rich by taking from others. I'm sure if you brought up Oprah and Walt Disney, they'd say those were exceptions, they were talking about those rich bankers and CEOs...
Let's see. It costs money and takes work to grow food. Farmer sells food to recoup cost and provide for farmer's family's needs. You choose not to participate so you have no money to buy food. Farmer can't give away food and continue to be able to grow food, therefore you starve. Simple.
As long as we're asking meaningless rhetorical questions: Why do you hate freedom? Why do you condone the government stealing money via taxation? so on and so forth...
Good, totally comprehensible summary, Barry - thanks for posting. Not sure how any progressive could refute any of that except to say there needs to be either a) price controls or b) nationalization of all businesses, a la DPRK.
(there was one small spelling error where "their" should have been "there")
That is always where it leads. That is what they don't get. They think that they can do just the good parts of communism. No, if it fails when fully implemented, which it did, it will fail when half assed as well.
Of course, I offered a solution almost a week ago, where everyone makes 200K a year and gets taxed at the precious 39.6% tax rate you libs have wanted for years... but you called it a "gray area" even though in theory you should agree with it.
While we're asking what a standard living wage should be... tell us what "fair share" means, percentage-wise, in taxes.
I'm not really a numbers guy, but I believe you should be able to get as wealthy as you can provided that there are no people in society dying from poverty. There should be a minimum acceptable standard of living for everyone in the country, and I fail to see what's wrong with that.
There's no reason to believe we can't pay for it if we prioritize social justice over giving the vast bulk of the country's wealth to the top fraction of a percent.
Interesting thing about "when you don't have to pay for it." How many of you think we should pay down national debt as quickly as possible? Okay, how many of you are willing to contribute a single cent to the cause?
There's no reason to believe we can't pay for it if we prioritize social justice over giving the vast bulk of the country's wealth to the top fraction of a percent.
Nope, sorry--money still has to come from somewhere. And typically, you think that you won't be the one to pay for it; that's why it's so easy for you to promote it.
I guarantee if you were getting fleeced for the very programs you support, you'd be a lot less generous to your fellow dumb striver poors.
How many of you think we should pay down national debt as quickly as possible? Okay, how many of you are willing to contribute a single cent to the cause?
I don't think that "we" owe a dime to the government. It's not "our" debt. I, for one, asked for none of the spending, especially the war/torture/police state spending.
But what happens when people don't want to work for that standard?
Ironically, Tony was crying about "social contract 101" the other day, yet here he is arguing that people who aren't holding up their end of the contract by working shouldn't be penalized for it, and in fact should be SUPPORTED for their lack of effort.
Nope, just arguing for a minimum standard of living for all people, regardless of whether they praise Jesus sufficiently, work hard enough, or do something else you moral nannies demand of them.
We give inmates a minimum standard of living. All societies have them. Except libertarians.
Nope, just arguing for a minimum standard of living for all people, regardless of whether they praise Jesus sufficiently, work hard enough, or do something else you moral nannies demand of them.
Except you're not willing to do the math to show how this is possible, which invalidates your whole argument.
The money has to come from somewhere--and if the "poor" don't want to pay for the social programs they want, then quite frankly they don't deserve them.
tony,
unless your actions are directly causing people to die from poverty, why should you or anyone else be responsible for the sum total of bad decisions that put someone in that predicament? And, much as the left hates it, people usually are the sum total of their choices. Smart people learn from their mistakes and avoid repeating them. But, govt often rewards or excuses stupidity, even subsidizes it, in creating the perpetual underclass that is necessary for there to be a Dem Party (see: Great Society, etc).
It's called getting what you incentivise. The problem is that if you provide a minimum acceptable standard of living for everyone while expecting nothing in return then that's exactly what you'll get. This isn't Star Trek where freeing everyone from labor gives them time to create the perfect society. It also frees people to sit around and doing nothing except get stoned and have more babies to provide for.
You fail to see what is wrong with that because you're an idiot.
There is this concept called charity. You see it often in churches and organizations like the United Way. Millions of people donate willingly even contrary to your belief millionaires.
If you're going to advocate that anyone who is successful should have the fruits of their labor forcibly taken you are no better than a thief. Your intentions do not matter one iota, you're a thief and the sooner you and your ilk are treated as such the better off we'll all be.
It all relative. If min wage goes up to $20/hour, my pay should adjust the same. In return, merchandise and goods will also go up. Now where are we, back to square one, where the $20/hour min wage is not enough.
And just as Mr. FIFY said, there is no cure for poverty.
Finally, someone who understands what this nonsense is about. The workers world party (on the bottom of the sign in the first picture) is a communist organization. They're always a huge portion of the crowd at these types of things, and the demands don't make sense for a reason.
It's not about a set of coherent demands, it's about groups such as this trying (always laughably) to gain support so that they get to make all these decisions.
It's always pathetic, and gets coverage far out of proportion to what is deserved because it provides cover for the complete failure of the current Democratic leadership.
A swath of people believe a minimum wage prevents wages in the five cents an hour range and people from living in shanty towns. They point to the third world as their evidence.
How many of these third world nations have shitty governments subsidized by the US/UN? How many are being controlled by various violent thugs fighting for control of the government?
And if you think Hong Kong, a place that is more capitalistic than the US has been in 90 years is a shanty town and has always been a shanty town, I need to know what kind of paradise you live in.
You know what looks like shanty towns in the US? Heavily sudsidized/welfarized (It's a word...now) democrat voting inner cities. Methinks there be a connection.
I live in a third-world country. We usually have minimum wages that are unreasonably high. The result is roughly half the country's workforce isnt even in the formal sector, and about 30% of the country wholly supports itself outside legality. That is what leads to 5-cent wages and 16hour work days. Yes, its terrible that some people work all day yet still dont make enough to live decenly, but minimum wages wont do anything about it
tony - 2 changes which should be demanded; only public financing for all elections, & reimposition of the Glass?Steagall Act separating commercial & investment banking.
Sorry, no. Why should my tax money be used to fund politicians with whom I disagree? You realize there are active and viable Nazi political parties in the US, right? Or do you only want public funding for people you agree with?
Step 1: Government collects my taxes, thus limiting my ability to support whom I please.
Step 2: Government decides based on arbitrary standard that my preferred candidate doesn't deserve "public money" - aka the money it took from me.
Conclusion: The government has actively diminished by ability to support my preferred candidates by taking a portion of my limited resources and then denying my preferred candidates my own money.
No, stOOpid... the only *fair* way would be for every candidate to get the same amount of money - without regard to party affiliation.
What you want - even if an American Nazi party getting money weren't the worst part - would be perpetual two-party rule. No independent or third-party candidate would meet your percentage, which is also a bad thing.
The movement is gaining momentum in its THIRD week now and Occupations are popping up all over the country! Stand up together and use your voice to give to those without through peace and solidarity. Tax the rich and feed the poor- you are the 99%! See my Occupy Wall Street painting and Anonymous homage on my artist's blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.....treet.html where you can also see videos of the protests and police brutality as well as get other sources for coverage of the movement.
A) Fuck off, slaver
B) Blogspot? Every hipster is laughing at you, including the ones down on Wall Street.
C) Your fucking crapass blogspot blog froze my browser. So fuck off again. Slaver.
The average "grunt" office worker on Wall Street are 40k and 50k middle-class kids who majored in Finance and Accounting in college. You know, that same demographic you claim to represent. Fuck off, slaver.

Only if we can go back to the DoD being 75% of government spending.
-What percentage of people went to college in the 1950s/60s as compared to now?
-How many social welfare programs in the 50s and 60s compared to now?
-If you were diagnosed with non-hodgekins lymphoma in the 50s/60s, what were your chances of survival compared to now? Related: How long was the average lifespan in the 50s and 60s?
-What were the status of blacks, mexicans, women, homosexuals, etc... in the 50s and 60s?
After all the expected answers to these questions, finally: Where exactly, was all that glorious revenue money from the mighty 92% top rate, going? What purpose was it serving?
I read a complaint in my hometown paper that tax revenues were the lowest in 50 years. Obviously, being sceptical, I did the math and found that, on an inflation-adjusted basis, that wasn't even close to the truth. A little further digging revealed a NYT article that reported it was the lowest in 50 years as a percentage of GDP.
Which leads me to deduce that if the revenues are the same regardless if the top marginal rate is 92% or 30%, then jacking the top marginal rate back up to 92% isn't going to solve the problem.
As that graph that constantly makes the rounds here shows, as % of GDP the most revenue we took in was during the late 90s (21% of GDP). Going by that logic, there is no reason for the top rate to ever go above 40%.
Go to Grand Central Terminal and leave a briefcase filled with small denomination, unmarked and nonsequential central planning and we'll release your Wall Street unharmed.

USE CONGRESSIONAL AUTHORITY AND OVERSIGHT TO ENSURE APPROPRIATE FEDERAL AGENCIES FULLY INVESTIGATE AND PROSECUTE THE WALL STREET CRIMINALS who clearly broke the law and helped cause the 2008 financial crisis [...]
It is so cute that it never occurs to them that Congress won't ever investigate the 08 crisis because Congress was one of the primary causes.
These clowns made an appearance today on campus at my university here in Maine. Just a bunch of entitled and ignorant loony toons. One had a sign that said "occupy everything". Huh? Some were wearing shirts decrying the police state while chanting for more government power. I wish I had time to troll them nice and softly, but sadly I had to continue on to my job.
Could have been, but at the distance I was watching from they looked way too dirty to be trust fund kids. Grungy hippies all the way down. White boys with dreads and fat chicks in short skirts and ripped spandex. If there were trust fund babies present they were truly dedicated to their art and I give them an A+ on the costumes.
And corporations are aliens. It is not like they don't provide a job and a good living to millions of people. And it is not like they provide goods that our ancestors could only dream about. Nope, they just rob and steal.
$50 an hour!? You heartless butcher! Do you want old ladies to die in the street after eating cat food? The minimum wage should obviously be $100 an hour.
Oh, I know! Let's make the minimum wage the same as the highest-paid CEO's salary! Then we'll all be rich!
Saldy, most of these dumbfucks think ecomomics means buying "green" and "organic" bullshit!
I don't really ever give much thought to the fact that I'm white (except for St Patty's and Oktoberfest since I'm Irish/German) but there are times when I can't help but wish that my RGB scale was lower since nobody else seems to produce quite as many self-entitled fuckups as caucasians do!
It just has to be a generational/parenting thing because the protesters the cameras keep showing are WAAAY younger and whiter than any Tea Party rally!
Exactly. I had a part time job during college and had to pay for my own tuition at a local college. Thanks to my parents' generocity, I lived at home while commuting. I did all this precisely to avoid taking out any student loans. If someone comes along and excuses student loans, I'm gonna bust some heads!
I just paid off my fucking loans. If Obama(or anybody) waves a wand, and washes all the current student loan debt away, I going to demand $70,000 or else (can't say what I will do, because drones will blow me up).
The biggest problem with student loan debt aside from the fact that the government has made it 10000 times worse than it was, is that you can't declare bankruptcy.
To be fair, they were sold a bill of goods by their teachers and parents that they needed to go to college regardless of whether they could afford to pay for it or not. How many times have we seen hacks in the debt-management industry state that student loan debt is "good debt"?
Not that I have any real sympathy for these entitled douchebags, but they're not the main villians in this little passion play--they're just the intellectually stunted dupes. If you grow up having the "a college degree is everything and you need to get one by any means!!!" meme drummed into your head practically from birth, it takes a lot of self-awareness to overcome that type of brainwashing.
Maybe, but once you're in, you can't change your mind. I'd contend that debt is one of the primary drivers of the "rich get richer" thing. The middle class and the poor export their income to the wealthy via debt payments. The wealthy stay away from debt, or pay it off as soon as possible. Could be that's why they are wealthy. I personally do see debt as a form of slavery. Just because it doesn't involve a plantation and Simon LaGree doesn't mean it can't be called slavery. When you're obligated to a company that can arbitrarily change the rules whenever it feels like it, including making the interest rates so high it's unlikely you'll ever pay it off, it certainly begins to look like servitude. Maybe that's the word, just so you don't get all upset: servitude. Better now?
So people should be prohibited from obligating themselves to perform contracts that they entered into freely, without coercion, and with full opportunity to read the fine print?
When you're obligated to a company that can arbitrarily change the rules whenever it feels like it, including making the interest rates so high it's unlikely you'll ever pay it off, it certainly begins to look like servitude.
You're deluded. No company can unilaterally do such a thing, unless you've explicitly agreed to those terms beforehand; a variable rate credit card, for example.
The wealthy stay away from debt, or pay it off as soon as possible.
Like that Donald Trump, who has never leveraged money to make more money. No, he has simply managed to pay off all of his debts speedy-quick.
Most of the 'wealthy' people I've dealt with take on debt to acquire more wealth. The difference is that their bets, lucky or not, turn out to be right the majority of the time.
Another policy that must be instituted is raise the minimum wage to twenty dollars an hr.
This just reminded me of the scene from Putney Swope in which the titular character and the token white guy are discussing a potential pay raise for the latter. Putney essentially informs that if he were to give him a raise, he'd then be obligated to give everyone else at Truth and Soul a raise - at which point, "We'd be right back where we started, see?"
But they don't see and that's the real crux of the problem. Some of these people are actually intelligent so that's no excuse. It's pure willful ignorance. Purposefully looking away from what they perceive to be the "ugly truth".
These people are driven by emotion, and like Ayn Rand said "Emotion is not an argument." People feel that having to pay for "basic" amenities like food and healthcare (what's so basic about growing something while protecting it from environment and shipping it across the country or the world or treating fucking cancer?) is an injustice because some people can't afford it. To these people, they think shoving guns up the asses of everyone else to steal their loot is justifiable as long as the loot is used for an emotionally-driven purpose. Never do facts, reality, the injustice of robbery and threatened imprisonment enter their little world where the miracles of the modern era just fall from the sky like so much rain. When the riots start, these are the people who will be leading the violent masses to rape and murder your family so they can finally provide Viagra to everyone. We are through the looking glass, people.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure animal testing has saved more lives than 911.
Honestly, anti-capitalist tirades tend to attract spoiled, self-righteous college and post grad punks that are trying to become self-actualized by participating in an event they perceive as being contrary to the status quo. At the heart of the movement are a few genuiune Marxists that know how to manipulate the emotionally and intellectal immature to do their bidding.
I've had three such people as professors. I'm beginning to feel obligated to try and save as many impressionable college students as possible.
Where do people get the notion that they have a right to something that someone else has to give them?
In order to have a job, someone has to give it to you. In order to have a living wage, someone has to give it to you. In order to have health care, someone has to give it to you. If a law is created compelling someone to give you those things or the government takes from someone else in order to give to you, that is force. It is against the principles of liberty.
People have freedom of speech, religion, etc because they do not have to be given to you by someone else. You have them by nature of being a living human.
Anyway, I have faith that one day, some of these kids will learn the errors of their ways when they realize their anti-liberty agendas are against their own self interests. But, unfortunately, many more will still drum on the same mantra until their dying breathe. And these people want to decide how my life is run. They vote in people who will enact laws to do it. Ugh...
A sudden commotion destroyed the moment: the door flew open and two angry men wearing the coarse faded-blue robes and belts of the Cruxwan University burst into the room, thrusting aside the ineffectual flunkies who tried to bar their way. "We demand admission!" shouted the younger of the two men elbowing a pretty young secretary in the throat.
"Come on," shouted the older one, "you can't keep us out!" He pushed a junior programmer back through the door.
"We demand that you can't keep us out!" bawled the younger one, though he was now firmly inside the room and no further attempts were being made to stop him.
"Who are you?" said Lunkwill, rising angrily from his seat. "What do you want?"
"I am Majikthise!" announced the older one.
"And I demand that I am Vroomfondel!" shouted the younger one.
Majikthise turned on Vroomfondel. "It's alright," he explained angrily, "you don't need to demand that."
"Alright!" bawled Vroomfondel banging on an nearby desk. "I am Vroomfondel, and that is not a demand, that is a solid fact! What we demand is solid facts!"
"No we don't!" exclaimed Majikthise in irritation. "That is precisely what we don't demand!"
Scarcely pausing for breath, Vroomfondel shouted, "We don't demand solid facts! What we demand is a total absence of solid facts. I demand that I may or may not be Vroomfondel!"
"But who the devil are you?" exclaimed an outraged Fook.
"We," said Majikthise, "are Philosophers."
"Though we may not be," said Vroomfondel waving a warning finger at the programmers.
"Yes we are," insisted Majikthise. "We are quite definitely here as representatives of the Amalgamated Union of Philosophers, Sages, Luminaries and Other Thinking Persons, and we want this machine off, and we want it off now!"
"What's the problem?" said Lunkwill.
"I'll tell you what the problem is mate," said Majikthise, "demarcation, that's the problem!"
"We demand," yelled Vroomfondel, "that demarcation may or may not be the problem!"
"You just let the machines get on with the adding up," warned Majikthise, "and we'll take care of the eternal verities thank you very much. You want to check your legal position you do mate. Under law the Quest for Ultimate Truth is quite clearly the inalienable prerogative of your working thinkers. Any bloody machine goes and actually finds it and we're straight out of a job aren't we? I mean what's the use of our sitting up half the night arguing that there may or may not be a God if this machine only goes and gives us his bleeding phone number the next morning?"
"That's right!" shouted Vroomfondel, "we demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty!"
Suddenly a stentorian voice boomed across the room.
"Might I make an observation at this point?" inquired Deep Thought.
"We'll go on strike!" yelled Vroomfondel.
"That's right!" agreed Majikthise. "You'll have a national Philosopher's strike on your hands!"
Let's raise the minimum wage. And while we are at it, lets make unpaid internships or volunteering to help any business or nonprofit illegal. How in the world can we let college kids be exploited by these horrible internships?
I hate college kids. Fucking morons. They would have a stroke if you banned internships and their way to break into the labor market. But they they think nothing of raising the minimum wage and fucking every poor person trying to break into the labor market.
But they they think nothing of raising the minimum wage and fucking every poor person trying to break into the labor market.
They don't even understand the relationship between raising the mininum wage vs. number of people employed vs. prices of goods. If you raise the first, force the second to be maintained, the third will eventually raise and invaliadate the whole point of raising the first. If you raise the first and try to force (at gunpoint since there is no other way) the other two to be maintained, people will start fucking starving. The only real option is to lower/eliminate the first, watch the second rise, and the third fall. But for some reason, letting people be paid at non-inflated prices while letting the cost of goods deflate is a bad thing.
Then again, most of these kids are majoring in "subjects" that are complete anathema to facts, statistics, trends, and the laws of nature so it's surprising the mechanics of this situation escape them.
Of course not. With the increased labor costs, a Big Mac would probly go up to something like eleven bucks. That's why we should get serious and up the minimum wage to fifty bucks an hour. Gotta keep a step ahead of those evil capitalists!
Demand two: Institute a universal single payer healthcare system. To do this all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs and hand that money to wall st. investors.
I literally work across the street from these goofs. I don't get why 200 college kids with no real message or organization are getting this much attention. We had bigger protests in my podunk college.
College students were some of the earliest and most enthusiastic supporters of Nazism. Young intellectuals are always the first to drink whatever new poison kool aide shows up.
That or number 9. Every time I see some media rodent writing a thumb sucking piece about how ungovernable America is, I always think of panel 9 of that cartoon. "We need a man who can make a plan work!"
What's especially funny are Olbermann and Maddow and the like complaining that the media doesn't give OWS enough coverage. They complain that the Tea Party protests got more coverage, which I'm not sure is true, and if it is true they omit the fact that most of that coverage was overwhelmingly negative.
The OWS crowd is on the Left, so the media won't dismiss them as stupid, crazy, or racist. They are that life sucks with a Democrat in the White House, so the media won't portray them as brave fighters for truth. The only option less is to give them scant coverage.
Saw a little bit of the Boston occupation on TV while at the dentist earlier.....they asked some fuck stick what specific demands they had...his answer....we have lots of ideas. Well alright then ! I thought the kids today were all media savvy with their facebooks and viral videos and stuff. But this putz can't articulate 2 or 3 ideas when the lady puts a microphone in his face.
I've been following the OccupySF movement in San Francisco. I love the energy and idealism and spirit of these kids. But the message is incoherent, they're hopelessly disorganized, and they don't actually know anything about anything. For the first couple of weeks the disorganization was part of the charm; now it's becoming a problem.
I wish these kids understood that they have more in common with the Tea party than with the SEIU thugs who came down to help them protest one evening. But that won't happen. I'm hearing the same old "power to the people" 60's pseudo-Marxist rhetoric that was already parody of itself 40 years ago.
But the movement in SF is growing and maybe it will come to something. But more and more I'm realizing it won't.
You all need a crowd. You all need a movement. You need to be surrounded by the wool of a million other sheep before you finally feel warm. You all have social consciences because you're zeros as individuals. Your compassion for others is ironically founded on your own self-hatred. You swim with "the movement" because you're lost on your own.
Yeah. I just keep reminding myself that this is an utterly impotent movement and represents nothing new. These idiots have always been around and always will be. From time to time they get bored enough to pop up like a groundhog, make some noise, and make for a good news story to fill some air time.
all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs
Recant your false consciousness, Groovus! In your heart, you know they're right.
I want subsidized internet access. I want a subsidized WOW and Rift account. I want a life sized MNG/Tulpa/Tony/Rather voodoo doll that I can punch in face. I want 3d porno. I want to buy 100,000 copies of the Declaration of Independents so I don't have to see another blurb. I want hair on the back of my head. I want an 80 inch HD TV with 7.2 surround sound. I want lots or porno stars who tell me how big I am. I want to get rid of my nose hair. I want to run a 4 minute mile. I want STEVE SMITH prosecuted for slipping those roofies in my drink.
Fuck, I forgot weed. Fuck that $80.00 for a stingy 1/8th weed. I want $25.00 for a big 4-finger 1/4 oz. weed. And not that fucking Mexican shag weed. Some nice Portland Purple Kush. Oh, and a vaporizer. Oh and a nice ceramic bong.... oh and.......
I tried a vaporizer and couldn't get high with it. Is there some trick? It produced a lot of vapor, no high. Put the same weed in the 10 year old ceramic bong and...what was I saying?
I understand that there is a libertarian-leaning "end the Fed" contingent involved. But they seem to be more than drowned out by the calls for greater economic fascism.
Because as we all know, the solution to state-supervised corporatism is? to give the state even more power.
Ugh, Gawker is so full of fucktards who are talking about, "Even though their message isn't clear yet, I really support what their trying to do. We need a mass movement in this country!"
I'd point out that we have had a mass movement grow up in this country lately, and it's called the Tea Party, but I'm probably forgetting something. OH! RIGHT! The only real kind of protest comes from the left wing!
And of course if they keep fucking around they are going to get a mass movement. But this one is going to be armed and none too interested in what the fucktards at Gawker have to say.
Watch MSNBC much? There's running coverage of this on CNN, the NYTimes, LATimes, Guardian, WaPo, etc...
And the tea party actually opposed specific legislation - letting the tax cuts expire and Obamacare. When progressives opposed a specific budget proposal in Madison, WI earlier this year, they got tons of coverage. It's not the media's fault these "Occupy [x]" clowns aren't getting round the clock coverage.
The tea party may have been specific, but they're still a monochrome minority and less popular than atheists and muslims, kind of like the KKK, so I'm not complaining about the level of coverage for the WS protesters, I'm complaining about the neverending obsession with the tea party.
Uuuh, those drops in popularity came shortly after the debt ceiling debate. And you'll notice they've gotten little coverage since then. http://dailycaller.com/2011/08.....-atheists/
During the "height" of their movement, they polled pretty decently, as you can see in that article. The "obsession" with them was the fact that they managed to show up to the polls and vote in a decent number of their preferred candidates. Something these Occupy [x] protestors seem (for now) incapable of doing.
Yeah, the problem is that when "mass movements" occur, a lot of people end up dying as a result--and most of these SWPL jerkweeds will melt in about 15 seconds once shit gets real.
I find it hard to take seriously a "movement" by people living with their parents and/or getting money from their parents. Frankly, I'm not sure kids living with or off their parents should get the franchise.
I don't think anyone who doesn't hold a full time job in the private sector or is at least married to someone who does (I will let housewives vote), should have the franchise. I would disenfranchise myself. If you are unemployed, retired or work for the government, you are not paying the bills and shouldn't have the vote.
But they're still subject to government policies. Democracy isn't about who's paying the bills, it's about people getting to consent to their own government. But you know this, fascist hunter that you are.
Democracy is not a tool for legalized plunder. When it becomes that, that's when I say to hell with democracy. I want my rights as a human being to be recognized, not a fickle mob of economically illiterate pricks arbitraily stealing peoples stuff.
And yet, we don't let children vote. I don't really detect any mental difference between these clowns and children, so why do they get a say in how I live?
The danger of this seemingly benign disorganized blob, of course, is that it provides an opportunity for a more coherent voice to give them the one thing they're missing: a specific, implementable course of action. Unfortunately most coherent voices pushing specific courses of action are quite sinister.
Which reminds me: where the fuck is Ron Paul during all this?
They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.
Okay, so we weren't exactly making the payments on time as we agreed to in writing, but still....
They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.
And after Congress gave them the freebies, we reelected almost all of our Congressmen, probably because we were swayed by all of those corporate ads.
They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one's skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.
Even though most major corporations actually have more liberal policies than required by law, and far more liberal than politicians in a democracy dare speak out for, this still sounds good.
They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.
Frankly, we're lucky to be alive after eating all of this poisoned food, and surprised there isn't mass starvation due to monopoly farming techniques. It's probably on the way.
They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices.
Okay, so this was legal too, but it's still wrong!
They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.
Imagine the gall.
They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.
Yeah, sure, we signed and said we'd pay them back. So what? Gimme more free stuff!
My take is that there is a group of perpetual protesters not unlike Dead-heads. They travel to where the protests are (as opposed to following the Dead) and now that the Madison, Wisconsin show is over, they've been forced to find another venue.
This is absolute fact. One of my friends is such a person. She quit her public school job to move to DC to be a full-time "activist". Now she lives in a rich beach town in CA with her rich fiance.
I never got the "joiner" bug. Don't understand it. These people might as well be from outer space.
There's groups I'd like to join (Ferrari Owner's Club of _______), but not really for the same reasons that probably motivate the Occupy Wall Street twits.
As I mention to the wife occasionally, I joined the Army at 17 and that pretty much cured me of the desire to go out and join organizations. One of these days she'll realize I'm not joking.
Interesting you say that - I had a discussion with my dad that the libertarian movement may be doomed because joining groups, or being part of a crowd, is contrary to most libertarians' nature.
I am certainly a natural-born contrarian. One of the greatest compliments I ever got in my life was when, riding in a car with a bunch of friends, each in turn got labeled as something ("punk" or "fashionista" or "artiste"), except me. They just could not figure out how to label me. Still gives me to warm fuzzies to this day.
They oppose any alteration of Gaea's precious genes. So when the rest of us are genetically engineered to live ten thousand years or more, they will all nobly opt out, choosing death rather than genetic engineering. And while they won't kill to stop genetic engineering of people, who are unnatural anyway, they love to rack up body counts in denying genetically modified foods to poor people.
The one thing I will give them is that it is fucked up to sue someone over your enhanced crop migrating from one place to another without compensation for it. To be sure there are people that would steal the seeds, but holy tap dancing jesus it's like they've never heard of pollination.
I demand that congress use it's necessary and proper clause power to prevent the tide from rising! We have to prevent global warming from damaging vulnerable coastal communities!
What good is that? If people can only pursue but not catch happiness, they'll all be miserable. Them and their posterity, which we're supposed to insure are tranquil in their domiciles, which we're also entitled to.
No need for police brutality to disperse this. It would probably be easier to just pay Phish to put on a free concert at some sufficiently nearby location, and problem solved!
"I love the energy and idealism and spirit of these kids. But the message is incoherent, they're hopelessly disorganized, and they don't actually know anything about anything. For the first couple of weeks the disorganization was part of the charm; now it's becoming a problem."
This is essentially the same feeling anyone who's ever been involved with punk rock/hardcore will tell you. It's all really exciting for a while. Then you realize it's just a lot of incoherent retards with #1stWorldProblems looking to act significant, without actually being significant.
Hell, half the reason writers still name drop and quote punk bands, which is silly. They're all dumb. Shit's embarrassing.
"I wonder - how does Apple get the rare-earth metals used in iPhones, iPads, and MacBook's, out of the ground?"
Actually, I-things are grown on small, organic, sustainable farms all over the world.
Apple hands out the seeds and all you have to do is poop and pee on the ground; in six months, you get to harvest a new I-thing!
See, all these things are FREE!
What's with all this talk about them supposedly not having a coherent message? Of course they have a message, their commies, plain and simple. Nothing new here, just the same rabble of left-wing loons as usual, just a new name for the old game.
....I see some "IMPEACH WAR-PIG OBAMA --- STOP THE WARS AND CORPORATE BAILOUTS" signs. Otherwise, I will think they are working for the Obama Reelection Committee.
I've got the sudden urge to go down there and see what genuine law breaking I can egg these protesters into doing. Stuff like smoking cigarettes in the park or eating _very_ salty pretzels.
American labor produces corporate profit. Corporations take the profit of American labor and invest it overseas. American economy goes down the tubes. Any other questions, you smug smart-asses?
And while we're at it-- if America's future consists of lack of demand, due to lack of jobs and high unemployment-- and the only jobs available no longer can support a middle-class standard of living-- how exactly is America supposed to deal with this faction of society on a long-term basis?
Or do you really believe in a magic shower of decent new jobs for America, once The GOP regains control? Why on earth would corporations suddenly decide America is worth investing in again, when they have gotten away with the present destructive set-up for so long?
Madam, your ignorance of economics particularly when it comes to labor is stunningly complete.
If you were correct, then back in the 19th and early 20th century, as falling food prices and increases in productivity caused a collapse in agricultural employment, the U.S. would have had a permanent unemployment rate above 20%. The economy shifted from having 90% employment in agriculture to what 10%?
In a free market wages are a high fraction of workers' marginal productivity. Free flows of capital, goods and labor ensure that productivity is maximized thus driving wages as high as is sustainable.
In a free market, if a large group of people are unemployed, it means that the wages they are demanding are above the market clearing price, which is again in proportion to their marginal productivity.
Now, as entrepreneurs identify new unmet needs in the face of economic growth and advances in the scientific and technological arts, they identify new professions or forms of labor that heretofore did not exist - such as web designer - or dramatically expand the number of people engaging in certain professions - there are many many more computer programmers today than there were 50 years ago.
Mind you, these problems are not a Democrat vs Republican issue; both of those political parties promote these destructive interventions, to the extent the electorate allows them to get away with it.
In the end, people will hire Americans again, when it profits them to do so. The government needs to start respecting that rather than trying to dictate terms in the labor seller/labor buyer market.
It's important to note disparities in the system but it is also important to address how we as a society can agree to bring about changes to those things that grieve us and perhaps the mainstream media is right in this one respect- at the moment, no concrete plan or idea has been fostered as to how to exact changes in a very one sided system, and certainly waiting for the powers that be to come up with some watered down ideas hardly constitutes for much change, but then again at least the act of creating dissent and bringing awareness to what ails greater society is a good sign.
Perhaps what then is needed next is a constituency of those individuals who work within media, medicine, insurance, education, finance and politics and so forth to propose ideas that will go some way in addressing the legitimate grievances of greater society-and to bring back some checking of the system and evening of the playing field. But should we hold our breath?
To those protesters who get confronted with the question: what are you protesting? The answer: the individuals who allowed this country to be overrun by greed. Everyone on Wall Street is 100% guilty. No more excuses about what they do being a job. they all lie in the same bed and work for the same purpose. The corporations and media are to blame. They created a society of smoke and mirrors via the media and backed it by loopholes in the legal system. They created the false illusion of success for hard working people. All illusions: College degree to make money= Bullshit, buy a house have a family= more bullshit, buy all these worthless electronic gadgets and toys = more of the same bullshit . Peaceful protests do not get the job done. Look at how this country was founded. It was not founded in a time of peace. No country in history changed without a violent revolution. Unfortunately your society has been neutered by daytime soaps, X-box,internet and TV. You really want to hurt the Wall Streeter's. Gather as many people as you can to pull all their money out of the stock market at once. That will do major damage guaranteed.
The richest 1% pays no tax. The remaining 99% are overtaxed. The republicans keep saying we can't keep spending more than we take in. Put your money where your mouth is and stop rich people from spending more tax than they pay in, to the tune of about a trillion dollars a year. They pay zero tax. If they pay only 5 %, that is about 1/4 of what most people pay.
I currently work from home selling export goods and granted while it is good, I really do thin the occupy movement is very inspiring. I read on this blog http://importexporthomestudy.c.....al-export/
that exports will greatly help our trade deficit.
This is explained in detail in your reverse mortgage counseling session. With a second mortgage, or a home equity line of credit (HELOC), there must be adequate income to qualify for the loan, and make monthly payments.
That one alone destroys an economy completely. Wow.
It also obsoletes demand one, which is further proof (not that we needed it) of the completely muddled "thinking" at work here.
EACH of the demands is testament to the failure of the higher education system. Not a single of these represents any cogent thought process, just a sense of entitlement. "Free college education". Does that mean faculty will work gratis? The staff? Or, more likely, does it mean higher taxes for all...
I like the demand that Congress reverse the Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United.
D'oh!
Just a Constitutional Convention away!
Indeed when you make it $20 prices on everything move up in relation thus making $20 an hour just like $5 an hour in real spending terms. Of course I guess the next step is price controls because that always works. Geez folks this is just simple math here. WTF?
That's the ideer, because only the greedy want to make a profit, donchya know?
Dumb ass. Once you make everything free, then the living wage won't be inflationary. Jeesh.
Spambot, if they had math skills they would be employed.
Demand 0
Gimmmmeeeeee,
Gimmmmmeeeeeeee
Gimmmmmmeeeeeeeee
You greedy cocksuckers.
And yet, it's "corporate America" who is greedy.
+1 They demand a living wage even if they do nothing but sit on their ass. But everyone who works for a living is "greedy".
And as one article pointed out, they're using the restroom at the local McDonalds and eating donated Popeye's chicken while they protest. That'll really show those evil corporations. Geez...
They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices.
Hiding in plain sight!
eating donated Popeye's chicken
...that the Greedy World Workers Party give me the high-paying job I have a right to.
And I don't want to work very hard.
I want a pet that will love me, but i don't have to take care of it!!!
Stop wasting my time
You know what I want
You know what I need
Or maybe you don't
Do I have to come right flat out and tell you everything
Gimmie some money, gimmie some money!
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! Waaaaaaahhh . . .!!
As someone else here said, how the hell can they just take 3 weeks off life to camp out? Are they all trustafarians?
Yes. (I work in the building across the street.)
CAPITALIST!
+ 5 to Max
Frank Zappa said it best in "Teenage Wind":
"Free is when you don't have to pay for nothing or do nothing. We want to be free, free as the wind!"
Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment
Do they honestly think that wouldn't cause people to say fuck it and just stop working? How can anyone be that stupid?
It's simple. Don't read history, or read only the history that confirms your beliefs.
It really has to be a lifetime project to be that stupid. No one is gets that dumb over night. And then to stay that stupid must take real work.
john,
Not lifetime, just a four-year project.
That is one way to earn a living wage!
I don't. All my retirement funds are in foreign stock.
So you own overseas electric companies.
wait, none of their demands say people should work for free, but these people think their liberal arts education with no specialization or any ability to create new goods and services, means their entry level labor is worth much more than minimum wage. Ahem...
DO YOU THINK THAT'S WHY I DO IT? YOUR ASSUMPTIONS ARE INTRINSICALLY PATERNALISTIC.
"They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices."
Yeah, this movement is going to be REALLY popular.
Also - I wasn't aware banks used non-human test subjects
That's because they're hidingit so well. These people are speaking truth to power.
They make them robo-sign mortgages for hours on end.
Also, I hear they trade animal bellies on the commodities market. Sickening, it is.
Also, I hear they trade animal bellies on the commodities market. Sickening, it is.
When I read this I could only think of one thing. Yummy, yummy bacon.
YEAH! Fuck work! Where can I sign up for this here free money?
I hear the federal government is hiring.
Yeah, but you still have to get on a train and sit in a cubicle.
but do you actually have to work?
If I have to leave my couch and my DVR, it's work, dammit.
Cellular respiration, the most passive form of work.
Define living, you can probably ship these people off to camps or low income contrusction in the sticks for pennies on the dollar.
I think we've found Obama's "voluntary" army of community "servants". I was wondering where the hell they were.
CONGRESS ENACT LEGISLATION TO PROTECT OUR DEMOCRACY BY REVERSING THE EFFECTS OF THE CITIZENS UNITED SUPREME COURT DECISION
Not too big on basic civics, either, are they?
Dude, corporations and unions spending unlimited amounts of money on 3rd party independent PACs CLEARLY corrupts elections.
It is hard to work that stuff in in between all the mandatory hate studies classes. We really have raised a generation of idiots.
These dimwits don't represent the entire generation.
I hope not. But sadly I think they represent a good portion of it.
The boomers were worse.
The only mistake my generation made was raising your generation!
the boomers are their parents.
The apple didn't fall from from that tree did it?
I guess I was looking more at the impossibility of Congress reversing a SCOTUS free speech decision.
I got your meaning exactly.
Pass another unconstitutional law to reinstate a previous unconstitutional law! Two wrong laws make a good law!
It is like algebra. Two negatives make a positive.
Except that it's a good bet that many of these, even those with college degrees, don't understand basic algebra.
These are the art history majors and English majors and Philosophy majors here; people who don't take "those classes".
The English majors I knew couldn't write themselves a 5 page paper to save the rain forest let alone understand y=mx+b.
Hey, I have an English degree; and I understand what that means. It's that thing which you use to find that point in that grid thingy.
(Seriously though, getting an English degree is more fun than trying to get a job with an English degree--it's why I'm back in school pursuing a career in software engineering)
""Two wrong laws make a good law!""
With talk like that, you may get elected to Congress.
Busted. I'm going to run on a platform of regularly creating constitutional crises.
I'm all for the Buffet Act.
Wasn't that the law that made sneeze guards mandatory?
Guess who was also there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ-slddATPY
He was only there because he heard Radiohead was giving a concert...and he wanted to hit them up for campaign contributions.
These seem perfectly reasonable to me. Why are conservatives/libertarians against living wages?
Regardless of employment? We will leave it to you figure that one out dimwit.
Way to insult anyone like myself who grew up poor and now is not, thanks to hard work. Fuck off, whether you're real or not.
Um, I just don't think tax policy should be based around moral fingerpointing. Who doesn't give a shit about their kids?
And that "limited extent" to which we reward hard work and ingenuity would naturally be the maximum earnings one is allowed to keep after paying sufficient tribute to our enlightened and benevolent leaders, right?
So society should promote hard work and ingenuity by giving you everything that you need to succeed so that no hard work or ingenuity is required. What's wrong with this picture?
You mean people like Andrew Carnegie and Herman Cain were really hiding their millions?
"You're much more likely to succeed if you start from a place of success in the first place."
Really? Can you find anything that substantiates this statement? Or is it one more regurgitated talking point from you? What research I have actually seen shows an overwhelming majority of millionaires coming from non-millionaire households, unless you've got some different definition of success that you're using. Large amounts of wealth? High income levels? Shiny happy people holding hands?
That is incompatible with "Guaranteed living wage income regardless of employment." It's pure cognitive dissonance.
Besides, our system doesn't reward hard work.
Yeah, just look at government employees.
Doesn't reward hard work?
So Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Oprah were all simply friends of the money fairy?
You joke, but yeah, this is what a lot of people on the left believe. Check out the survey from a while back that was posted here; plenty of people on the left believe that people get rich by taking from others. I'm sure if you brought up Oprah and Walt Disney, they'd say those were exceptions, they were talking about those rich bankers and CEOs...
Bill Gates wasn't poor by any stretch.
Bill Gates's PARENTS weren't poor by any stretch!
If he woke up tommorrow with the money he had then, he'd hang himself in his closet!
If they don't want to participate in capitalism, fine, but then they shouldn't get any of the taxes that capitalism produces.
Let's see. It costs money and takes work to grow food. Farmer sells food to recoup cost and provide for farmer's family's needs. You choose not to participate so you have no money to buy food. Farmer can't give away food and continue to be able to grow food, therefore you starve. Simple.
if people choose not to participate in capitalism I don't see why that should be a death sentence
The universe owes me!
/shakes fist
"if people choose not to participate in capitalism I don't see why that should be a death sentence."
Awesome. So would you also agree that "if people choose not to participate in the tax system I don't see why that should be a jail sentence?"
"why people should be forced to live or die in a secular society on the Protestant work ethic."
Shithead, North Korea waits with open arms.
Have you been an idiot all of your life?
As long as we're asking meaningless rhetorical questions: Why do you hate freedom? Why do you condone the government stealing money via taxation? so on and so forth...
One very simple question: How could anyone think that raising the minimum wage would be a good idea? I mean, exactly whom would it benefit?
Good, totally comprehensible summary, Barry - thanks for posting. Not sure how any progressive could refute any of that except to say there needs to be either a) price controls or b) nationalization of all businesses, a la DPRK.
(there was one small spelling error where "their" should have been "there")
That is always where it leads. That is what they don't get. They think that they can do just the good parts of communism. No, if it fails when fully implemented, which it did, it will fail when half assed as well.
Uhh... there are no good parts of communism.
Thank YOU ...
Fair determined by what formula, Tony?
I'm not really a numbers guy
And that's where you consistently fail--the numbers are everything, because everything has to be paid for.
It's easy to support social justice when you don't have to pay for it.
Or is it always someone else who should pay?
""Okay, how many of you are willing to contribute a single cent to the cause?""
Appearently, not a tax guy either. Most of us already contribute.
That's really everything that is wrong with your position. It's not the country's wealth to give.
How many of you think we should pay down national debt as quickly as possible? Okay, how many of you are willing to contribute a single cent to the cause?
I don't think that "we" owe a dime to the government. It's not "our" debt. I, for one, asked for none of the spending, especially the war/torture/police state spending.
"...social justice..."
Shithead, you have no idea what that means.
"'There should be a minimum acceptable standard of living for everyone in the country, and I fail to see what's wrong with that.""
But what happens when people don't want to work for that standard? Or, you are borderline but can't manage your money?
There can't really be a standard. Even if you have one, those it's meant to help might not be willing to hold up their end.
If someone refuses to work when work is presented, should they penalized?
But what happens when people don't want to work for that standard?
Ironically, Tony was crying about "social contract 101" the other day, yet here he is arguing that people who aren't holding up their end of the contract by working shouldn't be penalized for it, and in fact should be SUPPORTED for their lack of effort.
Nope, just arguing for a minimum standard of living for all people, regardless of whether they praise Jesus sufficiently, work hard enough, or do something else you moral nannies demand of them.
We give inmates a minimum standard of living. All societies have them. Except libertarians.
"We give inmates a minimum standard of living."
Shithead, you can get yourself in jail any time you please.
You calling us "moral nannies" is too fucking rich.
Thanks for the laugh, I needed that.
tony,
unless your actions are directly causing people to die from poverty, why should you or anyone else be responsible for the sum total of bad decisions that put someone in that predicament?
So nobody want to pay higher taxes to pay down national debt?
Oh, only other people should pay, not you? Okay.
"So nobody want to pay higher taxes to pay down national debt?"
Shithead, why do you constantly post strawmen?
Because he likes it when the straw flies about when he knocks them down!!
So nobody want to pay higher taxes to pay down national debt?
Oh, so you don't want to cut down government spending to pay down the national debt?
Other people should pay, not you? Okay.
No we don't want to pay MORE. We already pay some.
No, Tony, you can't skate out of this.
What is "your fair share", as a percentage of income?
Quit being a pussy with your "not a numbers guy" cop-out. State how much of each dollar you want taken from whom.
DO it, candyass. Be the first.
Oh, and you forgot:
1.Taxes can't be raised high enough to pay off the national debt, and
2. There is no cure for poverty.
It all relative. If min wage goes up to $20/hour, my pay should adjust the same. In return, merchandise and goods will also go up. Now where are we, back to square one, where the $20/hour min wage is not enough.
And just as Mr. FIFY said, there is no cure for poverty.
b) nationalization of all businesses, a la DPRK.
Oddly enough, everything was a lot cheaper back when wages were in that 5-cent-an hour range.
Holy crap. The third world had the answer under their noses the whole time! Just have a $7/hr minimum wage. Problems solved.
Or do you only want public funding for people you agree with?
funding would be contigent on obtaining a certain % of support
So you'd discriminate then.
It's pretty well recognized that on the national stage, money follows popularity, not the other way around. Your proposal is redundant.
That's using government to stifle speech.
My god you are retarded.
God, but are you stOOpid.
So are you going to try Clinton for signing the repeal of Glass-Steagall?
that repeal was a mistake
I like my wages dead, thank you very much.
A BLOW-JOB IS A RIGHT!
if only...sigh
I assume you mean from an attractive member the gender you're fixated to?
Because NO man of any orientaion wants to go into the Department of Fellatio and find Rosie O'Donnell is the only one on duty!
Well if the government did in fact do just that paper bag sales would go up and dear leader can point to jobs created by stimulus!
You forgot to mention the increase in liqour sales!
The movement is gaining momentum in its THIRD week now and Occupations are popping up all over the country! Stand up together and use your voice to give to those without through peace and solidarity. B) Blogspot? Every hipster is laughing at you, including the ones down on Wall Street.
C) Your fucking crapass blogspot blog froze my browser. So fuck off again. Slaver.
Thanks. Saves me the trouble.
The average "grunt" office worker on Wall Street are 40k and 50k middle-class kids who majored in Finance and Accounting in college. You know, that same demographic you claim to represent. Fuck off, slaver.

Only if we can go back to the DoD being 75% of government spending.
Some questions:
How long were we paying off war debt after WW2?
We paid down portions of it up until 1957, and not once since then.
Demand seven: A flying unicorn that tells me when people are talking about me behind my back.
It has to shit rainbows or I can't approve of that demand.
Demand eight: Abolish gravity. It's holding us down.
Demand Nine: There is no Demand Nine
Demand Ten: No Poofters.
It also sucks!
Demand 11: No Fat Chicks
While we wait for official demands...
Go to Grand Central Terminal and leave a briefcase filled with small denomination, unmarked and nonsequential central planning and we'll release your Wall Street unharmed.
So...an empty briefcase?
Idiocy is eternal and never-changing, apparently.
What we ultimately prefer is a guaranteed dying wage.
Nice alt-text. Last one for the win.
It's like my crack.
It looks as though someone has an "allowance from my rich parents" view of the economy.
If Brian Sorgatz shows up as a result of this statement I am totally blaming you.

It is so cute that it never occurs to them that Congress won't ever investigate the 08 crisis because Congress was one of the primary causes.
how could they not demand free chocolate ice cream i could get behind that
Make it lactose free and I'm there
Make it lactose free and I'm there
Oh, great. Nutra-Sweet will want it to be sugar free as well. Central planning can even fuck up chocolate ice cream!!
Aspartame sweetened soy milk ice cream for all!
*wrrreeetcchhhhh*
Aspartame causes cancer. It would have to be stevia-sweetened.
I guarantee you there are a lot of trust fun babies down there. People who actually have to support themselves don't have time for this kind of shit.
The second photo shows shaved armpits. That's no grungy hippie.
We call those 'trustafarians' around here.
That's brilliant.
It's all image. Trust me.
Them decrying government actions that screwed everything up while demanding more government actions make my face hurt. How can they not see the irony?
Because these people REALLY believe that the government had nothing to do with the problem except for "deregulating" the economy.
Demand 8: Love one another right now!
Demand 9: if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with.
Stupid yank! It's SHAG, SHAG the one your with!
Chad Henne is my team's QB: what other choice do I have?
I demand that my parents give me a trust fund.
They don't have to, the government did -- the Social Security Trust Fund.
You mean the one with several trillion dollars in IOU's and ZERO actual assets?
Thanks a lot Mom and Dad!
More accurately, the gov't is forcing me to give my parents a SS Trust Fund.
And if your parents were assholes to you, they just fucked you twice (hopefully not literally).
a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth
That's as far as I got.
Corporations are rounding people up and forcing them to buy their products at gunpoint!!!!!!!!!!!
And corporations are aliens. It is not like they don't provide a job and a good living to millions of people. And it is not like they provide goods that our ancestors could only dream about. Nope, they just rob and steal.
I wonder - how does Apple get the rare-earth metals used in iPhones, iPads, and MacBook's, out of the ground?
I'm sure their iPhones and web servers have all been selflessly produced by the council in charge of the collective this week, at no charge to them.
That same council will be on animal husbandry duties next week.
Another policy that must be instituted is raise the minimum wage to twenty dollars an hr.
Why stop there? Let' make it $50.00/hr
You're being too stingy.
$1 trilllllliooooonn dollars an hour (with pinky in mouth)
$50 an hour!? You heartless butcher! Do you want old ladies to die in the street after eating cat food? The minimum wage should obviously be $100 an hour.
Oh, I know! Let's make the minimum wage the same as the highest-paid CEO's salary! Then we'll all be rich!
Right?
Maybe we can make the protesters happy by giving them $1 bills with a couple of extra zeros inked in with a felt tip pen. The effect is the same.
"Another policy is raise the minimum wage"? I know what class these fucks skipped to go marching.
These people have absolutely no idea about inflation.
Silly upper middle class educated white kids with nothing to do who don't understand mainstream let alone Austrian economics.
Well, let me tell you something my Kraut Mick friend...
(I can never resist a Godfather quote)
Re: Debt = Slavery
Yeah, the field master made you take out $100,000 in student loans to get that degree in medieval German tapestry studies from Wellesley.
How fucking self absorbed does someone have to be to think anything in their life sucks as bad as slavery? How about some perspective here.
Debt is slavery, but they sold themselves into it. Boo fuckity hoo.
The biggest problem with student loan debt aside from the fact that the government has made it 10000 times worse than it was, is that you can't declare bankruptcy.
this one makes total sense.
House slaves = house + slave.
Mortgate = house + debt.
By the transitive property of hippie math
slave = debt.
Now get back to Masta Rick Perry's hunting camp, toby!
My name is Kunta Kinte!
I like Wellesley. A reason for a bunch of ditzy girls to live a few miles from my work? I'm down.
It ain't cool to take advantage and fuck a retard!
It is because they don't know anything. Slavery is just a word to them. Just another piece of invective to throw out.
Also, it should be "The whole world is going bankrupt to whom?" Stupid hippie.
You are misreading her sign. Towho is a friend of hers who just told her the world is going bankrupt. If only she had used a comma correctly:
THE WHOLE WORLD IS GOING BANKRUPT, TOWHO?
I didn't WANT a master's. But the State seems to think I need one to perform my job.
"In an infinite universe, the one thing sentient life cannot afford to have is a sense of proportion." - Douglas Adams
""How fucking self absorbed does someone have to be to think anything in their life sucks as bad as slavery? How about some perspective here.""
No kidding. Debt is nothing like slavery.
Debt is nothing more than a responsibility one took by choice.
Exactly!
I mean how DARE someone expect that I pay back money that they have lent me?
When you're obligated to a company that can arbitrarily change the rules whenever it feels like it, including making the interest rates so high it's unlikely you'll ever pay it off, it certainly begins to look like servitude.
You're deluded. No company can unilaterally do such a thing, unless you've explicitly agreed to those terms beforehand; a variable rate credit card, for example.
I'm sure that's someone else's fault too.
But it's not my fault! Nobody told me that my degree in ancient philosophy wouldn't instantly land me a $200,000 a year job!
First up, at the OccupyWallSt.org website, here's the first six of Lloyd J. Hart's proposed 13 demands:
Holy fuck. What a endless free association shit storm of incoherent idiocy and reality-free cognition.
+5 to John
Demand #239: Adopt the Euro.
Yeah, it's going to need some rich parents when Germany walks away from that mess.
If the minimum wage were twenty bucks per hour, would a Big Mac still cost $3.75?
Fucking robberbaronism- how does it work?
If the minimum wage were twenty bucks per hour, would a Big Mac still cost $3.75?
Yes! But McD's would be a chain of "Automat" style restaurants instead of an entry-level employer.
To do this all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs and hand that money to wall st. investors.
Words...they fail me.
They failed morals and facts, so it's all good.
I literally work across the street from these goofs. I don't get why 200 college kids with no real message or organization are getting this much attention. We had bigger protests in my podunk college.
Thank God they have no ideas. If they did they might be dangerous. Do you realize how easily a real demagogue could manipulate these little shits?
All it takes is one good Beer Hall Putsch to fuck everything over.
College students were some of the earliest and most enthusiastic supporters of Nazism. Young intellectuals are always the first to drink whatever new poison kool aide shows up.
Probably because, with no life experience or knowledge of history, they don't realize it's the same old poison kool aide.
Random idiot college kids:
"We don't wanna be like Mommy and Daddy! Hey, Kool Aid!"
Goosesteps through the brick wall while giving the Nazi salute and screaming:
"ACH JA!"
Yep, looks like we're on our way to panel #8 in the cartoon Hayek.
That or number 9. Every time I see some media rodent writing a thumb sucking piece about how ungovernable America is, I always think of panel 9 of that cartoon. "We need a man who can make a plan work!"
Try panel 19, Tulpa.
"Your recreation is planned.
What's especially funny are Olbermann and Maddow and the like complaining that the media doesn't give OWS enough coverage. They complain that the Tea Party protests got more coverage, which I'm not sure is true, and if it is true they omit the fact that most of that coverage was overwhelmingly negative.
They will never ever receive the coverage tea party events have.
Because they're spouting what the media would love to profess, yet even they have had enough experience to know that they couldn't get away with it.
I yelled at them over the weekend as I was stumbling by on my way from Harpoon Octoberfest to the bar.
Since you were stumbling (and not crawling), I assume you left early?
Facebook and twitter are hindrances to forming ideas, not helps.
This might help:
http://www.jimgoad.net/bayaryan.html
Yeah. I just keep reminding myself that this is an utterly impotent movement and represents nothing new. These idiots have always been around and always will be. From time to time they get bored enough to pop up like a groundhog, make some noise, and make for a good news story to fill some air time.
What's goin' on in this world o'mine?
There's a whole lot of killin' in this world o'mine.
Somebody's gotta help this world o'mine...
Spare some change?
Got yer change right here, dumbasses!
*grabs crotch and thrusts vigorously*
You need some propofol AKA Diprivan.
all private insurers must be banned from the healthcare market as their only effect on the health of patients is to take money away from doctors, nurses and hospitals preventing them from doing their jobs
+ the internets.
I'll let you punch the real me in the face if you give me your 3d porn.
"Number One, make it so."
I tried a vaporizer and couldn't get high with it. Is there some trick? It produced a lot of vapor, no high. Put the same weed in the 10 year old ceramic bong and...what was I saying?
I might not have been up to temperature yet. The thermometer is probably broken.
The couple I have used screwed off the top of my head and shat bliss right into my brain folds.
Holy fuck - I gotta get my hands on one of those! And some weed...

Your newsletter...can I subscribe to it?
I understand that there is a libertarian-leaning "end the Fed" contingent involved. But they seem to be more than drowned out by the calls for greater economic fascism.
Because as we all know, the solution to state-supervised corporatism is? to give the state even more power.
I work in the area and smoke sometimes while watching them. If there's any libertarian element, they're hidden away.
I am shocked. Shocked that the woman in the 2nd picture has her pits shaved.
"Mass movement" is my favorite double-entendre.
I prefer a good old "mass transit" myself.
The tea party had corporate money and an entire cable news channel to promote it.
STFU, Tony.
The hippie party has union money and every other cable news channel to promote it.
Judging by my Facebook feed, the only people obsessed with the Tea Party are the lefties.
"kind of like the KKK"
Shithead, why are you a fucking idiot?
Sometimes his auto-reply script churns out material that's more offensively pig-headed than usual. It happens. In such cases it's better to ignore it.
You know who else lived with his parents....
Really, these kids are just like Hitler during the Vienna days.
I wouldn't compare them to Hitler in Vienna cause at least that fucker had a job...
You mean, in this particular instance, that they're worse than Hitler?
Well, he was just doing oddjobs and made a few bucks selling watercolors and sketches, but...
FUCK!
I guess it IS possible to be worse than Hitler!
But you know this, shameless thief that you are.
Democracy is beside the point when you're really saying "to hell with government."
Democracy is beside the point when you're really saying "to hell with government."
Democracy and government are not exclusively mutual.
Well, intelligence and I are mutually exclusive, so your point is moot.
And yet, we don't let children vote. I don't really detect any mental difference between these clowns and children, so why do they get a say in how I live?
Because their Art History degree makes them smarter than you, you know.
I mean, fuck, get with the program.
Have you seen what they consider "art" nowadays? I wonder if Uncle Sam invented Art Degrees as a way of covertly labeling the functionally retarded?
The danger of this seemingly benign disorganized blob, of course, is that it provides an opportunity for a more coherent voice to give them the one thing they're missing: a specific, implementable course of action. Unfortunately most coherent voices pushing specific courses of action are quite sinister.
Which reminds me: where the fuck is Ron Paul during all this?
Great, a communist revolution, after decades of the whole idea being trashed by reality.
Facts can't faze the faithful.
+10 just for getting all those tags right.
The "negotiate for better pay" one is hilarious. Because in their world, one is born into a job that cannot change.
Now she lives in a rich beach town in CA with her rich fiance.
a group of perpetual protesters not unlike Dead-heads.
Exactly. See here for an article from some years ago written by someone on the left exposing as fact your idea.
My drill instructor in the Navy was rather fond of this joke:
"What does NAVY stand for?"
"Never Again Volunteer Yourself!"
That's because you were kickin' in the front seat, sittin' in the back seat. They knew better than to try and pigeonhole you, you free spirit, you.
I wouldn't call myself a free spirit, being fettered by all this rage and cynicism.
undermined the farming system through monopolization.
Speaking of the "farming system", what the fuck is the deal with all the rabid, incoherent Monsanto hate?
I keep running into these people who think Monsanto is, like, Satan's Brimstone-Scented Feces, Inc.
(Ferrari Owner's Club of _______)

duh
Mobs of crazies like these make me glad I own guns.
Once again I go hungry. No braaaaiins anywhere near this demonstration.
You fools are wasting this poor creature's precious time! A man dying of thirst cannot drink sand!
I demand that congress use it's necessary and proper clause power to prevent the tide from rising! We have to prevent global warming from damaging vulnerable coastal communities!
"The Happiness Clause says I must be happy! Where's my happy, America? I demand you make me happy!"
It that b'twixt "The Santa Clause" and the "Good and Plenty Clause?"
It's in the Declaration of Constitutions, doofus.
Pursue, dammit, not catch.
What good is that? If people can only pursue but not catch happiness, they'll all be miserable. Them and their posterity, which we're supposed to insure are tranquil in their domiciles, which we're also entitled to.
By all means, yes. Let's raise the minimum wage to $20.
Piker! Make it $35.
No need for police brutality to disperse this. It would probably be easier to just pay Phish to put on a free concert at some sufficiently nearby location, and problem solved!
Spraying the area with soap would probably cause a lot of them to leave, too.
Just get their parents to threaten to cut them off if they don't come home this instant.
As a New Yorker, I nominate "Alaska".
Can someone help me out?
Shouldn't it read:
"The whole world is going bankrupt to whom," not "who"?
Well, she did major in English. Cut her some slack.
Here you can choose more new products, enjoy more discounts, so you get favorite products while saving money.
You ought to pitch to those folks on Wall Street.
They want cheap stuff.
Capitalism doesn't work! And neither do we!
Smug smart-asses.
The unemployment problem in the U.S. is the product of government assaults on the capital structure of the economy through inflation, intervention and uncertainty, not becaus corporations are permitted to import goods from overseas.
I see, so you people are more xenophobic than your average Joe Neocon living in flyover country.
But should we hold our breath?
http://scallywagandvagabond.co.....y-changes/
These protesters need to direct their anger at The White House and Capitol Hill, where the real problem is.
No tea party zone.
Your essay is good, I like it very much. Here I would like to share with you some things :

The richest 1% pays no tax. The remaining 99% are overtaxed. The republicans keep saying we can't keep spending more than we take in. Put your money where your mouth is and stop rich people from spending more tax than they pay in, to the tune of about a trillion dollars a year. They pay zero tax. If they pay only 5 %, that is about 1/4 of what most people pay.
Do they pay zero tax or 5%? You were unclear.
Or is it 38? http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/250.html
