Shocker: William Kristol Makes the Call for Ron Paul
Well, not really. The notion of perpetual war for perpetual peace, or perpetual democracy, or perpetual greatness, perpetual keeping fantasized enemies at bay, is far too important to Mr. Kristol of the Weekly Standard to consort with an intelligent and impassioned non-interventionist like Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).
But see Kristol today quote with approval old Paul co-author Lew Lehrman (on his book The Case for Gold) and who the heck else is getting anywhere near saying what Kristol and Lehrman say is needed?
In an important piece in today's Wall Street Journal, Lew Lehrman explains the connection between monetary and fiscal policy—fiscal policy will almost inevitably tend toward deficits and debt if the monetary authorities are (virtually) unconstrained in financing that debt. Until it all comes crashing down—as it is now about to. And he suggests a solution:
The solution to the problem is equally simple. First, in order to limit Fed discretion, the dollar must be made convertible to a weight unit of gold by congressional statute—at a price that preserves the level of nominal wages in order to avoid the threat of deflation. Second, the government must at the same time be prohibited from financing its deficit at the Fed or in the banks—both at home or abroad. Third, only in the free market for true savings—undisguised by inflationary new Federal Reserve money and banking system credit—will interest rates signal to voters the consequences of growing federal government deficits.
Lehrman's broadening of the budget debate is consistent with my attempt on Fox News Sunday to say that the GOP presidential candidate in 2012 needs to present a broad economic critique of, and alternative to, the Obama-Bernanke-Geithner economic model, not just a slightly faster path to deficit reduction or a slightly different view on tax rates. Fiscal, tax, budgetary, monetary, and regulatory policy all have been—to one degree or another, and for a shorter or longer period—on the wrong track, and their parallel wrong tracks are part of a broader liberal-welfare-state misunderstanding of sound political economy.
The GOP is going to nominate someone who articulates a critique of our present path. It would be better to have a candidate with a bold and comprehensive critique, and a grasp of sound political economy, than a candidate who simply wants to tinker—or one who goes off the rails in pursuit of populist approbation or gimmicky proposals.
In other words, words Kristol seems afraid to use: Go Ron Paul!

I wonder if Lehrman still wears those crazy suspenders.
To think he came that close to beating Cuomo back in the day.
Hey when is Reason going to do a story on the Obama birth certificate, and the controversy surronding it?
lol
Right after they do a story on the Ground Zero Mosque.
that is the best question you have ever asked.
No seriosly, no matter how you feel about it, how long can you pretend it isn't out there? No politician puts himself through this kind of drip, drip, drip if he has the goods to stop it.
Hey when is Reason going to do a story on the Obama birth certificate, and the controversy surrounding it?
In 2008 Weigel covered that material enough for a life time.
Of course he did terrible job of it. I had to look elsewhere on the internet to find copies of the two newspapers announcing Obama's birth in Hawaii.
who publishes birth announcements in 2 different papers? I've never heard of that.
A grandma who just got her first grandson that is who.
And the Kenyan Communist Caliphate when they launch their nefarious "50 year plan" of World Domination.
At risk of being offensive, white women in the year 1961 would not typically want to announce in a newspaper the birth of their black grandchildren conceived out of wedlock.
So, who placed the announcement then?
Well played, Mr. Doherty. Well played.
Although the header is obviously overstating it (which Brian even admits), this is nonetheless a pretty big development. I said it in the prior Ron Paul thread, and this just further engrains it, I really think he might be reaching a critical mass. He's getting more media coverage than ever; his ideas have so much credibility given what's happened the last few years and continues to happen; and the GOP field is so obviously weak right now.
Am I fucking delusional to think that Ron Paul might seriously become the GOP nominee?!>?!>?!
Probably. But I'll be voting for him too.
I'll be giving Johnson serious consideration as well, but if RP emerges as a guy that actually can win the nomination, he'll get my vote in a heartbeat.
Depends, is it Ron Paul vs. Gary Johnson?
A Paul/Johnson ticket? Oh shit yeah!
Yes. But Johnson has an outside shot. Paul is fighting in a crowded field for the Iowa caucuses and will have to split his attention between there and new hampshire. Johnson can carry New Hampshire by basically just ignoring Iowa, much like McCain did. Also, Johnson can attract (D) voters now that they aren't needed to put through their messiah.
You can't underestimate the hatred that the GOP establishment has for Tea Partiers and insurgents of all stripes. I think they would rather lose to a Dem than win with "the wrong sort".
They broke the "speak no ill of a fellow Republican" rule during the primaries and submarined Tea Party nominees last year. They are marginalizing and undercutting Tea Party elected officials in statehouses everywhere.
This primary will probably shape up as a showdown between the establishment (supporting Romney, is my guess) and whoever emerges as the Tea Party favorite.
Right now, I think the election is the Republicans to lose, but I can easily imagine them shitting all over the Tea Party, sending it home, and losing to Barack in a squeaker.
From what I've seen, the GOP is not kind to the RLC or other libertarians in the party.
Libertarians the world over are hated by political movements, for they advocate the diminishing of such. Just the way it is.
But Ron Paul does have one thing going for him none of the other candidates - Republican or Democrat - has...everything he warned against in the last election cycle and since has basically come true.
well he didn't correctly call deflation. (Some austrians did). Luckily, we will have another crash and then inflation again before the election cycle begins in earnest and people will hear him out.
He did accurately call deflation. Deflation of housing prices, mortgage-backed securities, and stocks with large positions in those 'bubbled' or artificially high securities.
That's what happens when a bubble pops: artificially high prices come crashing down. That is your definition deflation. This is exactly what the Austrians say happen when asset bubbles pop, resources (both capital and labor) must be re-allocated, which hurts wages and employment. And this is exactly what Ron Paul explained would happen, because he understands Austrian business cycle theory. Get real, kid.
And I agree wholeheartedly.
But I half wonder if its beyond their control at this junction. I've known a number of real conventional party line GOPers that have, over the last few years, really begun to latch onto RP's message on the Fed and war. Plus, RP doesn't have the socially liberal baggage that a Gary Johnson does.
Ha, to think GJ will make RP more appealing to WASPs.
Hahaha, you are probably right. Johnson is divorced, admits to smoking pot, and is not religious. Ron Paul looks like some golden boy of traditional Americana in comparison.
half the midwest admits to smoking pot. Seriously, the flyover states being pro-legalization is going to be the huge surprise of this election season.
"" admits to smoking pot,""
Yeah, not for nothing but so did Bloomberg and he is racking up more pot arrests than Ghouliani.
Just sayin
You're dreaming, dude. I wish it weren't so, but you are fucking dreaming.
I know I am... in my heart of hearts, I know it is nothing but an apparition. But for fuck's sake, I look at the GOP field and think "who the fuck would vote for Romney/Huckabee/Trump?" but I know there is no underestimating TEH STOOPID of large numbers of people inside voting booths, the history of popular sovereignty to this date has taught me as much.
I look at the GOP field and think "who the fuck would vote for Romney/Huckabee/Trump?"
2008: "I look at the GOP field and think 'who the fuck would vote for Romney/Huckabee/McCain?'"
I mean, look at the history of whom incumbents have faced recently: Kerry, Dole, Clinton, Mondale. One good candidate, three god-awful ones. Republicans are absolutely willing to nominate someone unelectable.
I was in Iowa in 2008, knocking on doors for Ron Paul.
People fucking love that Huckabee douche.
at least I'm not retarded in my mind.
""This primary will probably shape up as a showdown between the establishment (supporting Romney, is my guess) and whoever emerges as the Tea Party favorite.

I agree.
You can't underestimate the hatred that the GOP establishment has for Tea Partiers and insurgents of all stripes.
Don't you actually mean over-estimate?
Careful with that optimism, the withdrawals are painful.
I can quit Hopium any time I want.
I'm gonna kick tomorrow
Yes, you are
we are.
Am I fucking delusional to think that Ron Paul might seriously become the GOP nominee?!>?!>?!
Look at the current GOP field...then look at Obama.
After you have done that you have no other alternative but to conclude that Ron Paul in 2012 is a serious primary contender.
Yes. But not if you think Gary Johnson.
Ron Paul still has the big negative of his age to deal with, plus a past history of perceived kookiness.
Gary Johnson is Clinton in 1992. Think of it that way.
The Democrats had a weak field running against an incumbent president during a recession. Clinton got in by being the fresh faced outsider and not having a lot of negatives built up with the general public.
The difference is that the Democrats have always had a little more openness to newcomers in thier primaries. The 'pubs have always picked either establishment candidates or guys who've paid their dues so to speak. GWB was an establishment-backed guy, Dole and McCain had paid their dues. RP may have some semblence of a chance if only because he's paid his dues.
Ron Paul still has the big negative of his age to deal with, plus a past history of perceived kookiness.
Releasing his medical records may help with the age thing, particularly if (cough) other candidates do not. Pointing out that the perceived kookiness has in many instances proven prescient may help with the other.
True, but i still think that Johnson has the better image with the public.
Climbing Mt. Everest beats appearing as the butt of s joke in a Borat sequel.
Gary Johnson is Clinton in 1992. Think of it that way.
minus the political skills and ambition.
The big problem with RP is those newsletters, unless he can come up with a damn good explanation they could inspire minorities to actually vote.
The difference between 2008 and 2010 was that minorities didn't bother to vote in 2010 because they wised up to Obama.
come again, what's the problem with deflation? Last I checked no one was complaining during the 80s-2000s when the price of computers came crashing down, yes, with the attendant loss of jobs in that sector due to competitive technological revolution.
Fuck Billy Kristol - I've NEVER watched any of his movies, and I NEVER will.
Wait....who?
Besides, I'm backing Warty for President - I still want to be his Propoganda Minister.
I'd be happy with Harem Master
I'd be happy with Harem Master
You know they cut off your dick for that job right?
If you keep on tipping people off they will never fill the job-survival of the fittest!
I feel warty would be benevolent enough to forgo the traditional qualifications for the job.
Warty was born in Pittsburgh, so he's neither human nor American and isn't eligible to be president.
I was born in Canton, Ohio, numbfuck, which is...um...at least it isn't in Pennsylvania.
You're still not eligible for the same reasons. Butthole.
I nominate shriek for President. He's so spectacularly dumb that he'd have Washington in flames within a week. Which would be awesome.
I thought shrike was girl?
I thought shrike was girl?
shriek has no gender. "He" exists outside human norms.
Kinda like Wheatley in Portal 2.
Wheatley for President!
I don't need propaganda, I just need people to build monumental statues of me as a Viking. Are you up to that?
Proposed Capitol building
Can I interest you in some Teutonic monuments instead?
Can they be anatomically exaggerated, er, I mean, correct?
Will you tour the country in a campaign longship? Will you challenge your opponents to the Holmgang?
If you could institute the punishment of Blood Eagle for advocacy of new spending, you will have my vote.
You NutraSweeted the link, dude.
I will do it for you.
You are a gentle and benevolent overlord. I shall build monuments in your honor.
So with the help of the Huns the assholes who came up with this form of execution destroyed the Roman empire plunged Europe into the dark ages and after all that converted to Christianity...
Fuck them and fuck their execution methods.
WORSE CIVILIZATION EVER!!!
Oh and i forgot to mention they discovered America and then fucking, for no reason, forgot about it!!!
God damn WORSE CIVILIZATION EVER!!!
The blood eagle is a myth. Sorry pagan enthusiasts. At worst they carved the image of an eagle onto the enemy's back. The ribs and lung surgery are mere fripperies to the story.
And more importantly, will you correct the glaring omission of Amon Amarth songs from the Thor movie?
My god, that movie looks terrible. I've seen one or two ads for it and...just awful.
You're probably right, since Rottentomatoes currently has 94% positive reviews for it. Critical opinion seems to inversely correlate with actual value, probably in the -.8 to -.9 range. In any event, it doesn't look as horrible as the Conan reboot *barf*
Speaking of shitty remakes, I watched part of the new Taking of Pelham, One, Two, Three. It was actually worse than I thought it would be. They took an awesome heist / ensemble movie, and made a shitty action / star vehicle - complete with totally unbelievable ending.
It was actually worse than I thought it would be.
It's funny how, when they remake more obscure (but really good) movies, they fuck it up even worse because they figure they can screw with it more because fewer people have seen the original.
That's an interesting point. I've seen a few remakes of great foreign movies where they really fucked the pooch.
94% is usually a pretty good sign on RT. Unless you think something like this is probably a good movie.
I'm shocked, though. The only trailer I'd seen for Thor made it look profoundly stupid.
Every trailer I've seen looks awful as well. Putting this song in the trailers would have gone a long way to stoking my interest.
I hope not. Branagh needs to get his shit back together. As a director, I mean. He still acts well.
It's directed by Branagh? WTF? That's not really his style.
It's Norse and epic. He likes both of those things.
He's not exactly an action director, dude. Look what Ang Lee did to The Hulk.
Henry V had a big battle scene.
Agreed. Henry V has some great stuff in it (as does Hamlet). I think Branagh's up to the task.
Full disclosure: I know the writers. FWIW, I've read other stuff from them that's damn good and know they're big comic book geeks who also love movies (i.e., they're not so beholden to source material they'd make something like the Watchmen movie.
they're not so beholden to source material
uhhhh
Was the Thor comic beholden to its source material?
Touche. No, it wasn't. But, since the film is a Marvel Comics production, I never can tell where the defenders of the Marvel "canon" will come out of the wood works.
One suspects such defenders don't lurk on H&R. Still, in the years I've been coming to this site, I've learned not to be surprised with the cross over of certain parts of popular culture with libertarians/libertarianism.
MY LIFE FOR YOU! BUM DE BUM!!
I would like to be minister for promotion of vice and prevention of virtue.
The President, as Commander in Chief, can declare where the military is statione. If He/She brought back 3000 troops and stationed them in our county from Germany it would mean income $150,000,000. This is money and jobs brought back home that woudl be paying sales taxes, income taxes, property taxes, and etc. Jobs that were exported can be brought back and Germany would be poorer and we would have a building boom and car sales would be great. Woe what if we brought all our troops home?
It would mean we'd have enough money to delay the government's impending bump against the debt ceiling for five whole hours; also that the rest of the world would rightly perceive us to be in a weakened state and start waging all the wars between its various factions that our global presence has long delayed.
All of this may or may not entirely be a bad thing, but that's what would happen.
Let the factions have at it.
Germany is in the middle of the EU, fears of an EU civil war should the US leave are zero.
Couldn't the Gauls attack Germany if our troops weren't there to stop it?
Yeah, but he asked what would happen if we brought them all back home. We've got troops a lot of places besides Germany, you know. "Woe" indeed!
Even better, let's bring all of NATO troops to the US and station them in the depressed areas like Las Vegas, Phoenix and Florida. Look at the benefits, jobs, cars sold, houses sold and the foreigners would be paying for it. Next, we'll get our money back from China the same way.
Oh shit, I forgot, they would be looking at our girls....
Doherty sez:
Well, not really, but that's what he means.
Economic policy is sort of important right now.
Wow, I just went to check NRO's blog to see what they had to say about RP. Apparently the Royal Wedding is the big topic du-jour to the social-/neo-cons. What a joke.
They've been the equivalent of the Tories for a while, dude.
I went there and found this as their top tweet.
That might be the most distrubing thing I've ever seen.
But its good to see rather getting her 15 seconds of fame.
They had an article about Haley Barbour dropping out saying that no that Haley Barbour was out there was no non-interventionalist candidate left in the GOP field.
WTF? The establishment is trying so hard to not even pay any creedence to RP. I really think they have another thing coming.
The most amazing example of this was in a magazine I love, THE WEEK, which did a half-page article on the CPAC convention and what it said about the GOP presidential field, referred to the straw poll, and named like 14 different potential GOP contenders---and NEVER mentioned Ron Paul, who only, ahem, WON the straw poll there. For the second time straight.
Yeah, that's so important. I'm sure we all remember what a huge influence those highly preliminary and far-from-scientific straw polls at that magazine had on the primaries and the general election last time, right?
Thinking that CPAC and what happened there are irrelevant to the GOP presidential field is a respectable and defendable position. Writing a half page article on what CPAC meant for the GOP presidential field and never mentioning the candidate who won the polls there is unequivocally not.
Jesus Harold Fucking Christ, it's bad over there.
The Olbermann/royal/Trumpurbation is too too much.
It's like TMZ, Huffington post, and Bill O'Reilly joined in unholy matrimony to spawn the worst website in the world
I just went to check NRO's blog
They have a Ron Paul poll.
He is winning by over 80%.
First, in order to limit Fed discretion, the dollar must be made convertible to a weight unit of gold by congressional statute
Umm you can already convert money into gold. The market has givenith. No need for congress to require something that the market has already provided.
And the Fed has the power to control that price indirectly through money printing. He's advocating taking away that power to influence the value of the US dollar.
No he is advocating a for very particular method of taking away that power from the fed.
There are better methods and goldbugism is the worst.
I'm for competing currencies, myself; let the government price its obligations in dollars and let the market choose to use a different currency freely. But it's not true to say that the market already provides something equivalent. There are many restrictions, like taxes and very high transaction costs if you want to hedge your dollars with gold.
"you can already convert money into gold. The market has givenith."
With attendant taxation to the state, of course.
With attendant taxation to the state, of course.
Gold is legal tender.
No I am pretty sure the sale of gold eagles is tax free.
opps
looks like US minted gold coins and silver coins are tax free becsoeu they are legal tender.
profits from other gold currencies and bullion are taxable
I must also point out that i misspelled because and the Constitution says that all gold and silver is legal tender....of course i would not take that argument to the IRS and expect to win.
GOP presidential candidate in 2012 needs to present a broad economic critique of, and alternative to, the Obama-Bernanke-Geithner economic model,
We need to offer an alternative that is about capital formation at the lowest level.
The Dems traditional policy is "rob from the rich and give to the poor".
The classical Republican policy (as popularly perceived) has been "let the rich keep more of their money, so they'll lend some of it to the poor."
The Obama-Geithner-Bernanke policy is "print money and give some of it to the rich, so they'll lend some of it to the poor, then spend the rest to stimulate consumption."
What we need is an anti-inflationary policy and a deregulatory policy that encourages savings and entrepreneurship across ALL economic classes. Instead of encouraging "consumer spending", and dependence on government stimulus dollars, we need to give people the freedom to innovate and and environment that encourages them to plan for the long term.
The inflationary policies of the Obama-Geithner-Bernanke team are based on a conception of society in which the poor exist merely to act as consumers and generators of "demand". They're just a bunch of hungry mouths, whose only contribution is to create a giant open sucking maw, constantly demanding to be fed, thereby giving the slightly better off a job.
Instead of treating poor people as little demand engines, who need to be stimulated to consume more and more, they should be treated as little capitalists, who can take their tiny bits of capital and use it to grow their own livelihoods.
How about private currencies that compete against each other?
(Read Time Will Run Back by Henry Hazlitt.)
On a side note anyone know where one could buy one of those silver liberty coins?
not the 1920s US mint ones but the ones made by that guy in Ashville who is now floundering in jail.
I can show you how to earn one baby
I'd prefer Johnson, but a Paul nomination would be the best establishment beatdown in GOP history.
Over my dead body
I'd like to see a Paul/Johnson ticket. Paul would be the oldest President elected so a good vice-pres is needed.
This guy is a joke and so was his father, Irving. His whole neo-conservative movement is about spreading democracy. Bush said it, Cheney said it, the entire staff at FAUX News says it, even Rush says it. Oh and don't forget about the democrats. They say it too. Karl Marx said it also now that I think about it.
"Democracy is the road to socialism" Karl Marx
Oh! Let us not forget that perpetual war is a progressive idea. Always has been. It's the one thing that ties all collectivists together. Their insatiable thirst for blood.
If he would just release his birth certificate, this would be over. why won't he? what's he hiding?
meanwhile, in Russia
Atlas Shrugged collases at the box office even without a NY Times review.

collases sounds like a dangerous drug-survival of the fittest
the government must at the same time be prohibited from financing its deficit at the Fed or in the banks
Why, I'll be discussing just that at my upcoming press conference!
Now, Mussel Shoals has got The Swampers. And they been known to pick a song or two. Lord! They get me off so much! They pick me up when I'm feelin' blue - now how 'bout you?

helle, you tart!!!!!!!!!
I think, in regards to the Royals, I may steal one idea from Slate: She is not Queen Elizabeth- she is Mrs. Elizabeth Windsor.
Mrs. Philip Mountbatten
Their name is Hanover. They aren't even English. They are just some live in German family brought in to keep the papists out.
LOL, Yeah OK, should be interesting to see how that turns out lol.
http://www.complete-privacy.edu.tc
Too many LOLs, needs more cowbell.
I definitely feel like his campaign is off to a better start than Ron Paul's was back in 2007. He seems to be receiving much fairer treatment from the mainstream media than Ron Paul did, perhaps due to news organizations learning that having Ron Paul and Gary Johnson on their programs gives them a spike in their ratings http://bit.ly/g9d3So
They say it too. Karl Marx said it also now that I think about it.
You are dead on. It's disturbing that FOX news will not even mention Ron Paul's Name. It's as though they believe if they ignore Paul and his truth, it will go away. Hannity did a faux interview with Dr. Paul, seldom allowing Dr. Paul to speak.
Your post is really good providing good information. Garlic health benefits I liked it and enjoyed reading it.Keep sharing such important posts.Sinus headache
