NPR Visits Mississippi

|

ProPublica, Frontline, and NPR have collaborated on a huge investigation into the country's death investigations system, looking at inadequacies in training, staffing, quality control, and the effects those deficiencies are having on the criminal justice system. NPR today has released a short video documentary on the Mississippi stories I've been covering here for a while, looking at medical examiner Steven Hayne, bite mark specialist Michael West, and the Kennedy Brewer and Levon Brooks innocence cases. The video embed doesn't seem to be working, but you can watch here.

Also this month, filmmaker Joe York's feature-length documentary on the Brooks and Brewer cases premieres at the Oxford Film Festival. Here's a trailer, featuring a brief appearance by yours truly:

Archive of my reporting on Mississippi's forensics system here. Roger Koppl and I on how to reform the forensics system nationally here.
