It Would Have Been Better If They Had Smoked Meth Beforehand, but I'll Take It
Today is Mark Souder's last day as a congressman. The moralistic Indiana Republican, one of the most vocal drug warriors in the House, this week announced he was resigning due to "a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff" (the same staff member who worked with him on a video urging sexual abstinence). Some highlights from Souder's career:
- He introduced legislation that denied college aid to students convicted of any drug offense, including marijuana possession. Bank robbers and murderers, meanwhile, were still eligible.
- He likened consumption of politically incorrect intoxicants to rape and child abuse.
- He called medical marijuana "just a phony excuse to be a pothead" and staunchly opposed legislation that would have stopped federal raids on medical marijuana suppliers.
- He opposed the nomination of former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld as ambassador to Mexico, citing Weld's support for medical marijuana.
- He was a major author of the law that aimed to suppress illicit methamphetamine production by imposing nationwide restrictions on purchases of allergy and cold pills containing pseudoephedrine.
Souder also co-sponsored the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act and the Military Honor and Decency Act, which would ban Playboy sales on military bases.
In November 2008, Radley Balko hoped voters would finish Souder off. Balko noted a 2007 appearance on Tucker Carlson's MSNBC show in which Souder defended increased funding for the government's demonstrably ineffective anti-pot propaganda on the grounds that "a marijuana user is very seldom just a casual marijuana user."

Why are moralizers always the worst in their private lives? Seriously. I am not going to defend adultery. But I have better things to do than make a political career crusading against it. Yet, people like this clown seem not to and inevitably get caught with their pants down.
"Why are moralizers always the worst in their private lives?"
We hate most in other what we hate most in ourselves. It's a classic example of building up one's ego by tearing down others.
We hate most in other what we hate most in ourselves.
As a heterosexual male, I would probably hate to have something in myself that I've rather enjoyed having in others.
I've always suspected that most wannabe moral controllers have horrible uncontrollable urges to do really terrible and degrading things and consequently believe the rest of us do too.
Having ideals and falling short of them doesn't make you a hypocrite, and having ideals is better than having none. But being a Democrat and defending your party's adulterers while cluster***ing over a Republican doing it DOES make you a hypocrite.
Personally, I think it's time everybody grew up on both sides and kept sex out of it.
Having ideals and falling short of them doesn't make you a hypocrite;
using political power to not allow others to fall short of their ideals is hypocritical.
Why are moralizers always the worst in their private lives?
They don't want the competition.
But seriously, the reason to pay attention to this is the hypocrisy of the laws Souder has backed in the name of his morality. As always, Sullum nails it with this list. But the headline puzzles me: wasn't Souder's meth precursor bill a good thing, reversing Reagan administration's failure to stop the trade at the behest of pharma interests? And hasn't that bill stopped the proliferation of meth labs in this country? (I fear perhaps, because it has moved to Mexico and contributed to the violence there.)
You must not understand the concept of private, consensual economic transactions.
Moralizing seems to be a sure way to gather votes from the simple-minded.
I am certainly not a casual user. It's very serious (and fun) if you do it right.
We should get together.
I consider myself a formal, rather than casual user. But also make sure it's serious and fun!
See, I'm simply a heavy and irresponsible user. Plain and simple.
What's funny is that I'm all for personal morality, but I wouldn't talk much about it as a politician. Not because I don't care about those issues, but because I don't think government has much role in dealing with such things.
Ethics of government officials is another matter, and I'd probably be on about that quite a bit.
Too many people conflate ethics and morality, Pro'L Dib.
I can see wanting to use the bully pulpit to promote your moral ideals, but trying to do so via law is counterproductive. Of course, most who do that do it to win over constituents concerned with moral values, not due to any personal morality. Expecting personal morality from politicians is like expecting honesty from a used car salesman.
Frankly, if you want to impress me with your honesty, fidelity, etc., then don't lie, cheat, etc. Don't friggin' tell me how good you are!
Wait, they had a name for that when I was in the Army. "Lead by example", I think it was.
What a strange idea!
but I wouldn't talk much about it as a politician. Not because I don't care about those issues, but because I don't think government has much role in dealing with such things.
Thinking like that would gut half the platform of the two major parties
No doubt.
Don't let the door hit you in the ass
It appears to have hit him in the face.
Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a thread winner.
Dude really is offensively ugly. Like, approaching Waxman levels of aesthetic distress. What was his staffer thinking?
I wonder what the other half of the tryst looks like? Seriously, what woman with any self-respect would drop her panties for that flabby, empty vessel?
He ain't pretty, no doubt; imo, however, Waxman is fuglier, much more so.
Go to the link above- she's in the abstinence video. She looks normal enough, for someone whose list of turn-ons includes dudes who look like old lesbians, not having sex, and restricting other people's access to various substances.
He has a HUGE dong.
And now I need to get drunk to erase that image from my mind. Thanks, fuckface.
"See, I would have gone in and bought a box of magnum condoms, thus demonstrating I have a monster dong."

I'm thinking that most of the libertarians here are saying, "Good riddance," for all the right reasons. And I'm also thinking that this consistent and morally defensible position will be ignored by strategically motivated leftists who choose instead to focus on libertarianism's alleged and wholly unfounded (in fact) racism. Because intellectual integrity is boring. Am I right, Rachel Maddow?
You sure don't sound like "Ed" of "The Ed Show" which I don't watch right after I don't watch Rachel Maddow.
I just hope he isn't the next Libertarian candidate for president.
+1
It's just too bad that those loyal, hardworking, average-American folks from Indiana won't be able to vote for this douche in the next election, apparently.
WTF, Indiana? Give it up to his bad karma for saving you from the embarrassment of sending this tard back to Washington.
Thanks for the karma, whoever/whatever provides karma.
He called medical marijuana "just a phony excuse to be a pothead"
I used to be guilty of this very belief. It was shoved in my head in med school, and is still the prevailing belief in conventional allopathic medicine; with the DEA watching over our shoulders over every little scheduled drug prescription, it's little wonder more doctors have not come out in favor it as a legitimate form of pharma TX.
Ask any pain management specialist how friendly and helpful the DEA is.
I used to be guilty of this very belief. It was shoved in my head in med school, and is still the prevailing belief in conventional allopathic medicine;
I wonder if that has to do with the fact medical MJ doesn't have drug reps dropping of lots of free promotional goodies and samples?
I find it very ironic when allopaths treat medical MJ as just an excuse to get high, but they don't have any issue prescribing Vicoden and Percoset for minor aches and pains.
(Not that I have an objection to either pharma painkiller use or marijuana use)
I wonder if that has to do with the fact medical MJ doesn't have drug reps dropping of lots of free promotional goodies and samples?
The FTC outlawed us getting the "free promotional goodies." Samples are important, as some folks cannot afford medications consistently. Samples are also a cost saving measure if latent allergy is present (always a risk in taking any medication). Why spend a lot of money on a new and expensive drug if it is hazardous and even deadly to your health? Since it is private business supplying the product, I see no issue with dispensing samples.
You bring up a great point though and my biggest issue with Big Pharma is their sucking government cock to keep their protectionist measures in place. Big Pharma fears competition, big time!
I find it very ironic when allopaths treat medical MJ as just an excuse to get high, but they don't have any issue prescribing Vicoden(sic) and Percoset(sic) for minor aches and pains.
I don't have any issue with prescribing either one. The only legal issue is that MJ is scheduled I, which is fallacious in itself as medical benefit is demonstrable. I have railed on these boards before about the conflation of "addiction" and "drug tolerance and dependance", and they are NOT THE SAME. The larger problem is cultural, as "illicit" drugs of abuse are viewed as a health hazard of riff-raff as opposed to legitimate personal lifestyle choices. It is incumbent on the physician to listen to his or her patient and assess PX accurately so effective PX management therapy can be started. Since I am not the patient, I have to assume they know their PX better than I do. However, their is the phenomenon of "drug seekers": those that game the system to obtain drugs to sell, particularly in ER's. The reason I have a problem with this is, because of my license, I am liable for what I prescribe and the contract I make with a patient is "I prescribed this for YOU. Not for anyone else. The contract is between you and me, and part of that contract is you don't sell this to other people for their personal use." Again, it addresses my liability, which is a legitimate concern regarding practicing medicine.
this is a great post.
btw, i recently had surgery and my physician prescribed me oxycontin and percocet, as well as muscle relaxers.
i've discussed this with several physicians and they FEAR the DEA, and rightly so. oxy, as a CII substance means that DEA strictly scrutinize scripts and also script patters (iow, what is the average dosage over time the MD prescribes per patient), etc. and looks for unusual patterns
drug seekers exist. i deal with them all the time, but the point is that dr's should not be dissuaded from prescribing pain meds to patients out of the fear they MIGHT be drug seekers. it's better to let 5 drug seekers get their meds, if by being too suspicious, it means that LEGIT patient doesn't get it. if the drug seeker OD's, that's his friggin fault.
if the drug seeker could score heroin legally, they wouldn't show up in doctor's offices trying to score, just the morgue.
that's tangential, but i agree
fwiw, i see a fair # of HEAVY oxycontin users. one guy i know uses up to 640 mg a DAY!!! he's too stupid to realize that heroin is FAR cheaper, on a dosage per dosage basis.
i can tell you a hyooge %age of property crime where i live is related to oxy addicts seeking $$$$ for their fixes.
He may have a fear of needles, or sells on the side. That much Oxy use suggests a high tolerance and immediate cessation could possibly send him into WD and kill him. Is this fellow a chronic PX patient or ER drug seeker?
Prosecute the crime of theft and other illegal means of obtaining funds for a drug habit, as you would prosecuting some one for car theft because they did not want to walk to their destination as opposed to hiring a taxi.
You want a drug habit, fine. You pay for it.
this is generally true. a lot of people, especially upper middle class kids do oxy because they see it as "clean" and 'safe' unlike heroin which is "icky" plus they have fear of needles (note that needles are OTC in WA state, thus easy to obtain).
we are on the same page. i don't believe in the war on drugs, but i do believe in prosecuting people for crimes (property etc.).
the general progression with oxy is orally then they crush the pills orally, then they snort and/or plug (anal), then they move to smoking. btw, the time they start smoking it, they are usually doing pretty high doses, like this guy.
oh, also. heroin WD (and oxycodone is very similar) is very rarely fatal. people feel like they are going to die, but rarely due. it does happen, though. usually, it's in cases where the people are overall very unhealthy. but even with people who are (and many addicts obviously are), it's still pretty rare.
Temperature's risin'
Fever is high
Can't see no future
Can't see no sky
What is the benefit of shoving the oxy up your ass?
the benefit is that, while it is very orally bioavailable, rectal absorption is excellent, and it avoids (somewhat) first pass liver metabolism. i've seen kids do enemas with grain alcohol for the same effect.
you couldn't do it effectively with vicodin or percocets, since by weight they are overwhelmingly APAP, and that would interfere with the absorption of the opoid.
the street term is "plugging".
Correct, Poston. You get an A for explaining the rectal route of administration of suppositories. However, APAP suppositories are an effective route of administration and distribution of a bioavailable drug specifically because of the abundance of blood via a thin mucous membrane and sanguine tissue. Vics or Percs probably won't get you high rectally unless you shove a large amount of them into the rectum. But then age and health and drug tolerance must be taken in as a factor. It should also be noted the max dose of APAP is 4 grams/24h for an adult.
right, but since the vicodin, etc. is like (quoting from memory) 5 mg hydrocodone and 625 mg APAP, you risk plugging up yer plug, so to speak, with all the APAP and not getting the hysrocodone absorbed.
that's the word on the street, and it makes sense.
some guys will extract the hydrocodone from vic's or the oxycodone from percocet (cold water extraction etc.) and then plug the solution.
one thing we see with (stupid) kids (but that's kind of redundant) is the idjits who will take TONS of nyquil to get the dextromethorphan high (technically, it is a relative of the opioids) not realizing the APAP is so bad for them.
the smarter ones will potentiate their opioid (perc's etc.) with antihistamines and even use the grapefruit effect for oxy and/or dextromethorphan.
but then again, SMART druggie is USUALLY an OXYmoron, pun intended
when you are talking 5mg of opioid (weak, in the case of hydrocodone) and around 600 mg of APAP, the problem is that there is only so much surface area, etc. essentially, they risk plugging their plug, so to speak, with all that APAP. the hardcore user is going to need AT LEAST 20 mg of hydro to get much effect, and that's 2 frigging grams or so of APAP. it is simply not a good way to go.
the smart ones will either extract the opioid (cold water extraction etc.) or use a pure opioid (oxycontin, etc.) for plugging.
and then they will take potentiators, like antihistamines and or use the grapefruit effect for oral route (oxycodone or dextromethorphan) increased absorption etc.
people get REALLY into it. it's a whole culture.
people get REALLY into it. it's a whole culture.
Very true. You couple recreational drug use with drug administration utilizing an orifice where sexual gratification can be derived and you you some very devoted adherents.
Sorry about the tangent but it was in reference to DEA fear and trying to separate drug seekers from legitimate pain sufferers. A doctor would probably have to make that distinction far less often if the drug seekers had legitimate sources to supply their habit. The doctors could then focus more on treating pain without fear of the DEA.
I find it very ironic when allopaths treat medical MJ as just an excuse to get high, but they don't have any issue prescribing Vicoden and Percoset for minor aches and pains.
Minor aches and pains? WTF? I broke my 5th metatarsal and the pieces didn't even line up. If I rolled over in my sleep they moved and I woke up screaming. All the fuckin' quacks would give me was NSAIDs and an X-ray (don't put any weight on it for 6 weeks). I had to hop around on one foot to score real narcotics on the street.
I'm sorry that happened to you SIV. I wish I could have treated you instead. I don't know the specifics of your case, but based on that anecdotal evidence, yeah, you were not treated properly, IMO.
I remember you posting that before on a Matt Welch thread.
either your dr. sucks or he had some reason to suspect you as a drug seeker. vicodin, as CIII is not nearly as highly scrutinized as CII drugs and i've seen it prescribed pretty willingly for all sorts of stuff WAY short of a broken metatarsal.
either your dr. sucks or he had some reason to suspect you as a drug seeker.
Well, he's commenting on a libertarian blog, for starters. 😉
lol. he probably has a phish sticker on his car.
Not as funny as if some meth head busts a cap in your donut eatin' ass Officer Cocksucker. Be safe out there!LOL!!1!1
Like you blowin' the doc for it. Lucky he had a uniform fetish.
Vicodin is obviously an easy prescription to get. A few years ago I had minor oral surgery, the doc removed a small growth from my lower inner lip. Local anesthetic, took 10 minutes. The doctor asked me if I wanted a prescription for pain killers, I said "sure, why not". She prescribed thirty Vicodins! Frankly, I didn't need even one.
I filled the prescription, and took one later that day. It worked! I don't remember the dose, but it was pleasant. I didn't take any more after the one because I was worried about the 650mg acetaminophen part of the pill. Overdosing on Tylenol will kill you. The other 29 pills sat in my medicine cabinet for years before I finally pitched them.
acetaminophen (tylenol) WILL kill you if you take too much. of ALL the attempted suicide by pills, i've responded to , the ONLY ones that were ever successful were the tylenol suicides.
once the liver damage is done, it's irreversible.
smart druggies will seperate the hydrocodone from the acetaminophen with the vicodin tabs, so they can get the opioid w/o the NSAID.
even so, hydrocodone is about 1/2 as strong mg per mg as oxycodone. it's a weak opioid.
APAP suicides are messy. One of the primary functions of the liver is to produce clotting factor. Non-functional liver == no clotting factor and and hemotoxicity. The patient is essentially a hemopheliac that bleeds from every orifice and TX is blood transfusions until renal failure occurs due to toxic levels of waste and elevated erythrocytes (RBC's)in the blood via hepatoxicity.
yea. in the cases i saw the acute overdoses in, it took them a couple of days to die. and it was not a pretty death
you must look really shady j/k. i just fractured my elbow and I got a couple of vicodins right away with a big script to follow. It doesn't even hurt that much. A couple of bong hits and advil and i'm fine.
In college, a freaking awesome dude guest lectured on medical marijuana. Found some of his stuff here. I don't really understand the medical-y/science-y stuff, but I sure wish more docs were listening to him.
Good fucking riddance. Don't let the door hit your stupid ass on the way out.
At least he went out in a sort of good way, being one of those to abstain from the DNA database bill.
Probably in his case because he was cleaning out his office, but he ends up having the same vote as Ron Paul.
"In my hometown in Fort Wayne and throughout northeast Indiana and throughout this country, kids are dying in the streets, they are dying in automobile wrecks, they are getting shot down as innocent bystanders in drug wars, most of which started in some kind of combination of cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana."
I'm trying to make sense of this. I've read it several times.
Nope. Nothing.
Sounds like a terrible martini.
Don't tell me that you haven't heard about, "The Ft. Wayne Spleef & Martini Insurgency"? It's supposedly being lead by a mysterious man wearing tight jeans, who was spotted driving a battered yellow VW Bug...
I heard that twenty years earlier he lead a successful rebellion against the City Leaders, and the local pastor, after the city council shut down the high school prom because they were worried about the lascivious nature of modern dancing.
Come on man, everyone knows that pot, tobacco, liquor, and sensual dancing always leads to blood and violence in the streets...
"In my hometown in Fort Wayne and throughout northeast Indiana and throughout this country, kids are dying in the streets in fewer numbers, they are dying in fewer automobile wrecks, they are getting shot down as innocent bystanders in drug wars by SWAT teams in their parents homes,
most of which started in some kind of combination of cigarettes, alcohol, and is over misdemeanor possession of marijuana."
Any better?
So what I take from this is he was popular in his district?
Wasn't there a thread where we discussed whether we trusted our neighbors' judgement on matters democratic?
I'm actively involved with my neighborhood POA. I don't trust my neighbors' judgment on anything much past what's an acceptable level of lawn care, and that's conditional.
One practical reason to be a libertarian is by limiting the scope of government, you limit the ability of the piss-poor decision making skills of the average schmoe to affect your life.
Whatever. The DC police would have eventually pick him up for bathing in a water fountain while his escort/staff member was filing his/her nail in a nearby limousine.
Good riddance.
Like so many of his ilk, cheating on his wife is actually the least reprehensible thing this dirtbag has done in his miserable existence.
Probably the biggest favor he's done her in a while.
My problem is that I advance a libertarian free sex philosophy ...and get no poontang .... he doesn't and gets laid. And he is uglier than I am - something I didn't think possible.
From now on I'm preaching abstinance.
Just don't preach against the gays and gay marriage, unless that's what your looking for.
Didn't Henry Kissinger say that power is the greatest aphrodisiac?
"Seriously, what woman with any self-respect would drop her panties for that flabby, empty vessel?"
Well, she's not bad-looking, but remember, even Hitler had a GF.
Ah man, you had to Godwin the thread...
Not Godwin. It was a movie reference. Somebody IMDBed the thread.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104212/
Actually, Hitler was widely considered by German women of the day to be a very handsome man.
I'd be gleeful if I weren't so sure that he has a lucrative career as a consultant/lobbyist/professional asshole on FoxNews waiting for him.
You clearly don't watch Fox News - it's the network that regularly features Stossel and Judge A. Napolitano. Two of the biggest supporters of individual liberty and constitutional govt in the media.
Good riddance to this guy, and I hope none of us sees his ugly face again.
Stossel is not on the Fox News channel; he is on the Fox Business News channel.
Napolitano sometimes guests hosts on Fox News but his show is only online.
You're right, I don't; though I am aware of both Stossel and Napolitano thanks to the miracle of the internets.
Still, they're kind of a fart in the hurricane of stupid over there, don't you think?
"He called medical marijuana "just a phony excuse to be a pothead" and staunchly opposed legislation that would have stopped federal raids on medical marijuana suppliers."
See, I support medical marijuana mostly for being a phony, backdoor way to legalization--so I guess it all depends on how you look at it.
I oppose raids on legal dispensaries for a number of reasons, but one of them is because I see such dispensaries as a phony, backdoor way to legalization!
Just because he's evil doesn't mean he's wrong, and, really, it's okay to denounce people for being evil. ...even if you're a libertarian.
living in L.A., I think that most people have scripts for casual use. That's not to say there isn't a medical benefit. A city doesn't support 700 (or whatever the number is these days) dispensaries based on medicinal usage alone. But with Trutanich in office I'm glad I kept my dealer and didn't give my driver's license to a dispensary.
I've looked at some of the websites for the doctor's groups that'll write prescriptions, and if you don't have something on the list of things they'll prescribe it for, then you're probably not looking hard enough.
I bet they can find somethin'.
And that's a good thing! I think. Decriminalization happens when the criminalization part just doesn't matter anymore. ...and what's going on now seems to be a step towards that--so I'm all for it.
Like I said, I think the guy's evil for what he wants to do about what he sees--but that doesn't mean it's isn't like he's callin' it. Yeah, if medical marijuana goes like California in the rest of the nation? The drug war is doomed.
The only real difference between me and him on that is that I think the drug war goin' belly up is a good thing.
It's gotta be harder to keep up the drug war when the dispensaries are already in place. We don't even have to worry about the logistics anymore--the legal distribution networks are already in place.
Good bye and nice knowing you.
So sorry dude, I lived about 30 miles from that God forsaken tundra, FW, in a nearby, err.. God forsaken tundra. Since I left there, I have occasionally had nightmares that I was back there and 'they' would not let me leave. I would wake up in a cold sweat and traumatized half to death. Fort Wayne, OMG, just sentence me to life in a Siberian salt mine. If I never see another freakin corn field or spend another winter in a climate like that, it will be too soon.
"(...) this week announced he was resigning due to "a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff" (the same staff member who worked with him on a video urging sexual abstinence"
If real life were a story that would be the ultimate clich? by now.
And so would Mark Souder for that matter.
Later...asshole.
He was a major author of the law that aimed to suppress illicit methamphetamine production by imposing nationwide restrictions on purchases of allergy and cold pills containing pseudoephedrine.
Now you know who to blame if you've ever had a sick child and couldn't get these medicines. Sayonara, asshole.
Some people cause trouble when just a simple mistake? And moralist involved with super conservatives. Also i have problems. If a person was kidnapped several times. And then he has to walk to work everyday , people did not help him, even christian churches. And other outspoken were targeted. Is the end of the world coming. Constantly rejecting and abuse of prophets and crime by mobs causing end. Lord needs our hands.Soory about comment here, i am prolife moderate. But usnews and christianity today removes my comments!!! Stoping religion causes end and corruption. Corruption in front of you. Fund poverty start up funds. Some did get out of school!!Fund Regional busing! Prosecute sex abusers and trafficers.
How do we know Souder didn't use weed in his OWN private time back when he was young?? Or that he doesn't use it today? He's already been caught adulterating...
How much you wanna bet right after they finished filming the abstinence film they got busy?
But what would compel a woman to wanna sleep with THAT, of all people?? Was she drunk?
Pretty sure adultry is one of the Ten Commandments... Smoking a J is NOT.
But neither should be illegal, Drippy.
The best part is that I went to school with his nephew who was most definitely and clearly a pothead.
I'm late to this thread, but check out this Souder rap video!!!
