Biden to Law Enforcement Groups: Sotomayor Has Your Back
Vice President Joe Biden made it all a bit clearer today.
Vice President Joe Biden may have crossed the line when he assured national law enforcement groups Monday that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor "has your back."
The remark quickly stirred criticism in the legal world, since Biden was making a pledge that a fair and objective justice would not necessarily be able to keep.
Biden made the remark at an assembly of eight law enforcement groups after he detailed Sotomayor's tough-on-crime record in the courtroom.
"There's a part of her record that seems to be, up to now, been flying under the radar a bit. And that's her tough stance on criminals and her unyielding commitment to finding justice for the victims of crime," Biden said.
He then repeatedly said, "She gets it," and sought to assure the law enforcement groups that she would be on their side.
"So you all are on the front lines. But as you do your job, know that Judge Sotomayor has your back as well," Biden said.
Biden is of course known to shoot his mouth off. But he wouldn't have said this unless he had some reason to believe it. It'll be interesting to see if anyone on the left speaks up on this, or if traditional liberal issues like protecting the exclusionary rule and the rights of the accused give way to party unity.
Also today, the New York Times has a story about a man whose appeal on a rape and murder conviction was denied after Sotomayor and another judge on the 2nd Circuit refused to even consider evidence of his innocence because his lawyer filed the petition four days late. Six years later, the man was released from prison after DNA testing cleared him of the crime.

Biden's comments, if they are understandable at all, seem to be addressing the old canard that Democrats are milque-toast on crime, while Republicans will pull out all stops to brutalize the degenerate who stole your bicycle.
In summary: Sotomayer is not a wonderful pick, and Biden is still a total clownfucker.
Let the beatings continue.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.
That man is actually stupider than Sarah Palin. Significantly stupider. If I were Obama, I'd be thinking of a way to get him to resign gracefully and be replaced by someone who's able to bullshit competence and stay quiet.
I think you're overestimating Barry's competence there too, Fascitis.
And most cops are too stupid to realize she's actually on their side.
Perish the thought.
She has your back and she will put a knife in it, along with the rest of us.
So you all are on the front lines
That's just as offensive.
Usually when Joe Biden gets in trouble he's just saying something truthful, if impolitic. I'm afraid this is no different. Since judges are affected by their life circumstances, I am worried that Sotomayor is a bit too much of a prosecutor. I wish there was more of a defense lawyer mentality in public office.
"Front line" is offensive.
I call 'em "flanges," but not in front o' me wimmen. They do whinge on.
I wish there was more of a defense lawyer mentality in public office.
Hey something we can agree with Tony on.
That man is actually stupider than Sarah Palin.
Maybe they should put him in an undisclosed location.
Flashback from last year's primaries (from the Concord Monitor):
"But in recent debates, particularly when questions on foreign policy and the world's trouble spots came up, one rival after another said, in some form, "Joe's right." It happened so often that "Joe's right" became the heart of a Biden campaign ad."
What, like the claim that he wrote the Patriot Act, or that the bill that Ashcroft sent up that became the Patriot Act was exactly his bill?
I think you give Biden too much credit.

Sounds like Sotomayor has a real lack of empathy here.
Look Mr. Wrongly Convicted Rapist. Rules are rules. You think filing deadlines don't apply to you? You think the facts of the case are more important than strictly following procedure? Shame on you.
But he wouldn't have said this unless he had some reason to want you to believe it.
That, I can agree with. That Joe Biden wouldn't say something unless he personally believes it is true, not so much.
If Biden's for her, she's obviously a bad choice.
Joe is the gift that keeps on giving. Why wouldn't you want to see more?
In the meantime, science marches on, debunking superstitions.

I like 'em big and round
And when I've got a media throw down
My baby's got it stacked up
And I'm callin' for police backup
I just can't help myself, I'm actin' like an animal
Wavin' my gavel, now here's my scandal
I wanna get you in the confirmation hearings
I tickle those golden hoop earrings
And ugh, double-up, ugh, ugh
Till the break of dawn
Baby got it goin' on
My homeboys tried to warn me
But that empathy makes me so horny
A lot of simps won't like this nomination
'Cause them punks ain't part of Obama nation
And I'd rather stay and play
'Cause I'm feelin fine, and I'm second in line
'Cause I'm long, and I'm strong
And I'm down to get the friction on
So, officer! {Yeah!} officer! {Yeah}
If you wanna roll in my motor car{Yeah!}
Then get with Sotomayor
And turn around! Stick it out!
Even Democrats got to shout
My baby's got your back!
From our "Things Reason is Too Wimpy To Tell You" department, here's my Sonia Sotomayor coverage.
P.S. In case anyone replies to this, their responses will almost assuredly be ad homs delivered through sockpuppets, thereby conceding my points and showing the cowardly, childish, anti-intellectual nature of libertarians.
Warty beat me to it, but I echo the sentiment. We have a caste system in the US - the government versus everybody else.
Another reason to hate that dumb latina bitch.
Shut the fuck up, LoneWacko.
