And Here's Another Clue for You All: The Coke-Snorting, LSD-Tripping, Binge-Drinking, Pot-Puffing Walrus Was Paul
Over at 10 Zen Monkeys--really one of the best newish webzines/sites around, thinks I--RU Sirius quotes Sir Paul McCartney, not only the "cute" Beatle but possibly the most perpetually stoned, on the subject of drugs:
In today's climate, I hate to talk about drugs because it's not the same. You have someone jumping on your head the minute you say anything, so I've taken to not trying to give my point of view unless someone really very much asks for it. Because I think the "just say no" mentality is so crazed…. [People are always saying,] "No no, all drugs are bad."… I hate that unreasoned attitude. I really can't believe it's thirty years since the sixties. I find it staggering. It's like the future, the sixties, the sixties to me, it hasn't happened. I feel like the sixties are about to arrive. And we're in some sort of time warp and it's still going to happen.
More, including a timeline of McCartney's public drug use, here.

Dear Paul,
Please go back to not talking about it.
That was just miserable.
Um, Sir Paul, it is 36 years since the 1960s.
I don't know exactly why, but Sir Paul has always struck me as a phony. Like he was only smoking harmless tobacco all this time or something.
""Um, Sir Paul, it is 36 years since the 1960s."
I was going to say... He must have been blown out when he said that.
Then again, you must be too, Guy. It's 2007! 🙂
He had to have been on SOMETHING for "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime"
I feel you Paul.
Dear joe
Please go back to... ah, whatever pit of hell spawned you.
Love
Warren
Sir Paul has been dead to me since "Coming Up"
andy,
Sorry, I forgot what year I stopped time traveling.
Even as I type this I realize that it sounds ridiculous:
Paul McCartney is the most underrated Beatle.
IMHO, the Beatles are the second most overrated band ever.
As Bill Hicks: the Beatles were so high they let Ringo sing.
Correction, it has only been approximately 30 years since the Sixties were shoved into the dirt at Forest Lawn Cemetery by Disco. The Sixties actually began with Where Were You In Sixty-Two and ended with the bicentennial. There's a little elasticity there so we could argue that the Sixties began with the 426 Hemi and the Byrds and ended with the advent of Smog Engines and the death of Gram Parsons in 1973.
I thought Paul was dead.
Not to be too anal about the technicalities, but it's only been 4 days into 2007 so it really has only been 36 years since 1970... just saying.
Also - though we're talking about pop music and my qualifications don't really matter - I am a professional composer and performing musician, with a graduate degree in music... and I'm here to tell ya... Paul McCartney sucks. I quit paying attention to him after I realized that he was responsible for Wings.
9/11 really set us back on the drugs issue.
I like watching studio 60 because they show how 9/11 set us back in so many ways.
Can't wait to get back in the US(S)A now that the nation is coming back to its senses. Even though Canada didn't get the hard-on for soldiers and authorities that the US did, it is still cold and lonely here for me. when i see studio 60, I remember how America used to be, at least the good parts, where the smart alecks were praised and the sheeple scorned.
I think a lot of smart creative people were basically hurt in a lot of diffuse ways and that a lot of the next 5 years will be spent integrating ill-used people back into mainstream culture. Lot of us are not happy.
He had to have been on SOMETHING for "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime"
No doubt, that is the worst Christmas song ever written. If anyone but McCartney sang that it would get zero airplay.
TWC,
Your post is why time keeping is done in the Astronomy department and not the philosophy department.
I quit paying attention to him after I realized that he was responsible for Wings.
Amen
Guy, :-). Well, of course, you're right, but the eras tend to be fluid. I mean the fifties didn't really start until mid-decade or so. Maybe a little earlier, with Rock Around The Clock.
yeah, the sheeple! down with sheeple, up with sheeple! c'mon sheeple now...shine on ewe crazy diamond...etc etc etc etc etc etc etc
and so forth.
god i fucking hate the beatles.
McCartney is right that we need to rethink our views on drugs. But, he seems to be in denial of the fact that the 60s didn't end so well for a lot of people and drugs were the primary culprit. It would be nice if people could find a middle ground between cocaine is fun and non-addictive and minimum mandatories.
Yeah, the Beatles "sucked".
Thank Allah for hip hop, the thinking-man's music.
well, thank zog specifically for rakim and pete rock and even biggie, at least ready to die. and 36 chambers.
i don't like the beatles, but i really hate the term "sheeple." it's arrogant and annoying all in one bite.
"i don't like the beatles, but i really hate the term "sheeple." it's arrogant and annoying all in one bite."
Amen Dhex. The people who use that term rank as the most annoying on earth.
"god i fucking hate the beatles."
Awwh, dhex, all you need is love.
Big ups to PR & CL!
In the DC area we don't even have sheeple, we have cowple.
Sgt. Pepper's = Most overrated album ever.
When I was a kid, I thought the Beatles made music for children. I still think that to some extent, despite assertions to the contrary.
highnumber - i always felt pete rock was carrying cl. his production is incredibly tight. he's also a really nice guy (i met him by accident once, and didn't even recognize him) who knows his shit regarding production and samplers.
Sgt Pepper's has some great songs. As a whole album, bah!
mk,
When I was a kid, I thought the Beatles made music for children. I still think that to some extent, despite assertions to the contrary.
There may be the occasional assertion by a sober soul but all of the proof is in your direction.
they show how 9/11 set us back in so many ways
Agreed. All the more reason to make damn sure it never happens again.

what we need now are some left wing retards to help balance the tao of hit and run.
what a coincidence. I h8 something too dhex! The term "left wing retard." It is gonna be a long road back.
However, the Beatles did write better jingles than the current crop of Leftie protestors.
Just heard the Sheehan folk from yesterday on the radio. Ick!
Agreed. All the more reason to make damn sure it never happens again.
Lesson 1: when it happens again, don't panic and start a bunch of wars. be braver and keep a stiffer upper lip next time, RCD. then you won't alienate the smart people as much and you will seem smarter yourself.
"Lesson 1: when it happens again, don't panic and start a bunch of wars. be braver and keep a stiffer upper lip next time, RCD. then you won't alienate the smart people as much and you will seem smarter yourself."
Translation; bury the dead, blame ourselves and do absolutely nothing to the people responsible.
Sam Franklin,
Great. Just how is it again that "the smart people" are defined by some as the people who want to internalize why they keep getting their asses kicked by people who want to rob and kill them?
dhex,
Back in the golden age, nobody could touch Pete Rock. His touch was so distinctive, yet light. Anybody who knows 90s hip hop knows that he was the best of a very strong generation.
yes, but sam the difference is you are a mentally ill monomaniac crying for attention, and i am a model/pornstar with a nine inch cock and a billion dollars.
Well, I only have a four inch cock, but some girls like it that thick. !!
Translation; bury the dead, blame ourselves and do absolutely nothing to the people responsible.
well, that approach certainly is much preferrable over: bury the dead, blame Saddam and do absolutely nothing to the saudi arabian money that bankrolled the dead perpetrators.
i might also suggest that they scramble the air defenses quicker next time, especially near population centers. If that is a form of "blaming ourselves" then it is clearly a healthy thing.
Dhex: and don't forget your HCFS-laden spunk that you sell as haircare product to military lawyer types!
"well, that approach certainly is much preferrable over: bury the dead, blame Saddam and do absolutely nothing to the saudi arabian money that bankrolled the dead perpetrators."
Okay, fair enough. Are you prepared to go after the Saudis militarily? I certainly wouldn't cry over them finally getting theirs, but somehow I doubt you would support military action against them. If not military action then what? If Bush had taken out the Saudis rather than Saddam, would you have supported it?
... who are real tough to boot!
how're those oil futures in Afghanistan going there, ol boy? (Didja get the second season of JAG on Betamax to go along with your "Struthersize" tape?)
vm, that is business that is between me, my corn subsidies, my pants and my god.
Why did Bush have to "do something" in addition to Afghanistan? He didn't have to take out the Saudis or Saddam.
Which of the Beatles had the most prominent male endowment?
Peter Best.
dhex:
i always felt pete rock was carrying cl.
I agree. One listen to CL's "Man On Fire" mixtape will confirm this. PR's productions are consistently great. I've got a few of his instrumental albums on heavy rotation most of the time.
well, thank zog specifically for rakim and pete rock and even biggie, at least ready to die. and 36 chambers.
Blackalicious, Cee Lo, Talib Kweli, Mos Def...
Wait a sec... I thought this thread was about Paul McCartney's rock, and not dhex's cock.
FOCUS!
Anyway, it occures to me that McCartney's face indeed has spawn a thousand clones. When I first saw the picture in this post, I thought is was some bloke from Oasis/Verbe/Charlatans UK/yada/yada/yada. The guy must've done something right.
And anyone needs some basic 101 on Paul's drug use, just watch his "Fool on the Hill" segment during the movie "Magical Mystery Tour". His pupils fucking eclipse the whites of his eyes. The acid was pretty good that day.
Unlike some of the posters here, I find McCartney's drug use disgusting (although unlike some of the others, I enjoy his musical work). Nonetheless, in defense of his counting abilities I must point if one reads the full post, the quote about the sixties as "thirty years ago" turns out to be from a 1997 book. So "thirty years ago" is properly rounded off, and, if he is thinking of his Revolver/Pepper prime, exactly accurate (1966/67 - 1996/97).
Okay, fair enough. Are you prepared to go after the Saudis militarily? I certainly wouldn't cry over them finally getting theirs, but somehow I doubt you would support military action against them. If not military action then what? If Bush had taken out the Saudis rather than Saddam, would you have supported it?
In late 2001, my preferred military strategy was to send a few hundred thousand foot soldiers after Osama Bin Laden and the "training camps" and to leave the Taliban alone other than basically rooting terrorism out of the country. My concern, in late 2001, was that the US was focussing on gaining political influence in Afghanistan and that they would not catch Bin Laden. I even promised a conservative aunt in late 2001 that I would vote for George Bush's re-election if he captured or killed Bin Laden prior to the 2004 election. Basically things in Afghanistan went as badly as I feared and we did not get Bin Laden, which, to me, means that the guy who did 9/11 got away with it.
As far as Saudi Arabia, that should have initially been matter of following the money and making public the names of the wealthy Saui Arabians who got the funds to Atta. Next step: you extradite these ppl. I would have given the saudi Arabian government 2 choices: give us the individuals we want to bring to justice in an international court. If they co-operated less than eagerly then there would have been a series of gradually escalating monthly nuke strikes until they came to their senses and handed over the individuals who bankrolled 9/11. As it stands, to me, the people who bankrolled 9/11 got away with it.
I am hardly a dove, as you can see.
"Blackalicious, Cee Lo, Talib Kweli, Mos Def..."
i have to deeply disagree on blackalicious outside of melodica and bits of a2g. kweli is interesting (a nice guy to boot). i've never really liked mos def.
i'd throw das efx on the table there as well, just for fun.
ok, we're about ready for another old white libertarian "rap music? more like CRAP MUSIC statement" so unload it already, you navel gazing prog fogies!
"I am hardly a dove, as you can see."
well your posts remind me of what it's like when doves cry, to be sure.
Dig if U will the picture
Of U and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Can U my darling
Can U picture this?
Dream if U can a courtyard
An ocean of violets in bloom
Animals strike curious poses
They feel the heat
The heat between me and U
How can U just leave me standing
Alone in a world that's so cold? (So cold)
Maybe I'm just 2 demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father - 2 bold
Maybe U're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (She's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like when doves cry
Touch if U will my stomach
Feel how it trembles inside
U've got the butterflies all tied up
Don't make me chase U
Even doves have pride
How could U just leave me standing
Alone in a world so cold? (World so cold)
Maybe I'm just 2 demanding
Maybe I'm just like my father - 2 bold
Maybe U're just like my mother
She's never satisfied (She's never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like when doves cry
How can U just leave me standing
Alone in a world that's so cold? (A world that's so cold)
Maybe I'm just 2 demanding (Maybe, maybe I'm like my father)
Maybe I'm just like my father - 2 bold (U know, U know he's 2 bold)
Maybe U're just like my mother (Maybe U're just like my mother)
She's never satisfied (She's never, never satisfied)
Why do we scream at each other? (Why do we scream? Why?)
This is what it sounds like when doves cry
When doves cry (When doves cry) (When doves cry) {x2}
Don't cry (Don't cry)
Oh yeah {x6}
When doves cry {x3}
Babe! {x6}
When doves cry (Doves cry, doves cry, doves cry)
When? when?
Don't cry
Darling, don't cry
Don't cry, don't cry, don't, don't cry
Usually people think I am more of a let's go crazee type or a mamamamama we are all crazee now type because of my legendary supposed mental illness.
I wanna flay the hippityhoppers for thinking that their music is so great, and pointing out that much of it, unlike the Beatles, is essentially devoid of melody. `Course, then I sound like my late Dad, complaining that you couldn't understand what the moptops were singing, not like that nice Mr. Crosby or the Andrews Sisters. {Note: Mairzy dotes? What the hell do that mean? 🙂 ]
Last night I listened to Matisyahu covering the Police on Kimmel. A Jewish guy from New York known for doing a mutated form of reggae, and for beatboxing, recapitulating white reggae from the UK, which was in imitation of the Copeland boys' Jamaican immigrant neighbors, who were listening to sides from the islands, where they dropped U.S. pop and rock radiating from Miami radio into their local melting pot, with the U.S. stuff deriving ftom the collision of the music of the African Diaspora and the folk tunes of the Celts and Saxons back on Erin and Albion, salted with the Tin Pan Alley sensibility of the Brill Building writers, who were mostly Jewish.
Snake eat its tail much?
Kevin
"Usually people think I am more of a let's go crazee type or a mamamamama we are all crazee now type because of my legendary supposed mental illness."
i don't think you're mentally ill so much as a monomaniacal asshole, though there might be some overlap.
musically, you have some potential were it not for the gimmicky monomania. i.e. feed me waffles would be a great 45 second track between longer pieces.
kevin: low end isn't about melody, it's about swing and thump. totally different focus.
sidenote: matisyahu is decent, and a good live performer, but it gets old kinda quick.
dhex: Benny Goodman swung. What does that word mean when you use it?
Kevin
