Peace talks and a leaky blockade: Following the failure of U.S.-Iranian peace talks in Pakistan to produce an agreement to end the war, U.S. negotiators say they are eager to try again.

The Associated Press, citing four anonymous sources, including two from the U.S., reports that preliminary talks to restart peace negotiations are underway. President Donald Trump likewise said on Monday that the Iranians have been calling and "want to work a deal."

The Reason Roundup Newsletter by Liz Wolfe Liz and Reason help you make sense of the day's news every morning.

Per The New York Times, the U.S. is demanding that Iran cease its nuclear activities for a period of 20 years, while the Iranians are only offering a five-year suspension. The fact that each side is proposing alternative peace conditions is a sign that talks might begin again soon, said the Times.

The U.S. blockade of Iranian ports, which Trump said would begin Monday evening Iranian time, seems to be only partially working. On X, the account Marine Traffic reported that two tankers turned around near the Strait of Hormuz following the beginning of the U.S. blockade.

One of these tankers, a Chinese-linked vessel sanctioned by the U.S. for violating sanctions on Iran, eventually managed to slip through the strait a few hours later.

Poor war: At a minimum, hopes of peace talks are calming some of the immediate economic disruptions caused by the war. Stocks have risen and oil and gasoline prices fell on Tuesday. Energy prices are still up significantly since the start of the war.

Analysts attribute some of the oil price decline to a forecast by the International Energy Agency that the globe will witness serious "demand destruction" for oil as a result of the massive disruption to global supply caused by the war.

Meanwhile, the war's impact on energy prices is having a secondary, suppressive effect on U.S. home sales.

Politico cites several economists and real estate professionals saying that the war with Iran is also slowing U.S. home sales during what is typically a busy spring buying season. Fears of higher long-term oil prices caused by the Iranian closure of the Strait of Hormuz caused mortgage interest rates to climb.

The National Association of Realtors reported yesterday that home sales fell 3.6 percent in March while prices continued to rise.

Swalwell resigns. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D–Calif.) said yesterday that he will resign his seat in Congress rather than face an expulsion vote.

pic.twitter.com/JbKgSORgu4

— Rep. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) April 13, 2026

The congressman had already suspended his California gubernatorial campaign over the weekend after being accused of sexual assault and other forms of sexual impropriety by a former staffer and other women.

Swalwell has continued to describe the accusations against him as false while apologizing for "mistakes in judgment" he'd made.

Even without the sexual assault allegations, Congress is better off without Swalwell. The man clearly conceived of his job as being a grandstanding media figure first, and a legislator second (or third, or fourth, or fifth…).

Congress has an excess of pundit politicians. It'll survive with one less.

Scenes from D.C.: The 51st has a recent article on the conversion of D.C.'s "streateries" back into on-street parking spaces after the city implemented more restrictive design guidelines and started charging rent for the spaces.

On the one hand, it is sad to see streateries go. They were one of the few positive changes to the urban environment wrought by COVID. To the degree that outdoor dining spaces are disappearing because of the new design requirements, this is a clear case of overregulation ruining an otherwise good thing.

On the other hand, it's completely reasonable that the city would charge rent for the public land these private businesses's streateries are permanently occupying. Allowing them to claim that land for free would be a huge subsidy.

Local food and drinks chronicler Barred in DC had a similar reaction.

Good update on streateries here

81 spots applied for streateries (this is not the same list as what applied), 5 have been approved. Seems like the architectural plans part make it most costly (they should all pay rent just like sidewalk cafes do IMO)https://t.co/aUtZbQCUCE

— Barred in DC (@BarredinDC) April 9, 2026

Ideally, the city would just privatize curbside space and the new owners could decide whether they want to continue with outdoor dining or operate for-profit parking spaces.

QUICK HITS

  • It's a bipartisan affair now. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R–Texas) says he'll resign his seat in Congress amid the threat of expulsion. The Texas congressman had already said he would not seek reelection after his former aide, with whom he'd had an affair, died by self-immolation.

There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all. When Congress returns tomorrow, I will file my retirement from office. It has been my privilege to serve the great people of Texas.

— Rep. Tony Gonzales (@RepTonyGonzales) April 13, 2026

  • Richard Hanania has an essay arguing that writers using artificial intelligence is fine (basically the equivalent of other tools like search engines and reading glasses) and that more AI use by the general public will reduce their willingness to believe conspiracy theories. On the latter point, I think he severely underestimates how much people elect to believe in conspiracy theories, as opposed to being hoodwinked into false beliefs by a bad information environment.
  • The East Coast is experiencing an especially temperamental spring, with daily high temperatures swinging by 30 degrees. As I said on a recent episode of Freed Up, a new podcast I'm hosting with Robby Soave, spring weather is really just winter weather and summer weather happening at once.
  • School closures, not phones, are a more likely explanation for declining test scores, says Emily Oster.
  • Trump posted an image of himself as a Jesus-like figure healing a sick man on Truth Social, before claiming he thought the image showed him as a doctor. This is where you end up when you start calling the Pope "weak on crime."

More fake news. Fact is the Chinese have issued a statement that they will not accept any impingement on their oil trade from the Gulf. They will honor the deals they have made with Iranians to ensure oil shipment and do not accept any interference in that. To them - the Strait is open.

That will create the snowball effect for at least other nuclear powers who have made agreements with Iran for control of the Strait - Pakistan, India, and France, And likely other countries that want oil and have no interest in the pissing contest between US/Israel/Iran - Korea, Japan, rest of NATO x maybe UK.

It is certain that Iran will side with the rest of the world rather than US/Israel.

Why would we take the Chinese threat seriously? Are they going to sail their single, untested, aircraft carrier over to Iran to help them out? They have a lot of small ships, but not really anything approaching a blue water navy. Can they attack us from China? Not really. Land warplanes Anywhere between China and Iran? Maybe India? Not if they want to take off again. Pakistan is a possibility, The problem is that China isn’t really equipped to project force very far from home.

What else does China have? Issuing a stiff note?

...the U.S. is demanding that Iran cease its nuclear activities for a period of 20 years, while the Iranians are only offering a five-year suspension.

They're not really going to suspend anything either way, and the Israelis will be keeping close tabs, so give them five and be done with it.

    1. mtrueman   2 months ago

Trump and the Israelis assure us that in 20 years the Evil Empire of Iran won't be quite so evil.

    2. JFree   2 months ago

There is no nuclear deal anymore between the US and Iran. That ended on Feb 27 when the US once again rejected that. The only nuclear deal Iran will accept now also involves Israel acceding to NPT/IAEA control. Since the US can't/won't get Israel to do anything, there is no reason for a deal with the US.

I doubt Israel and Iran will negotiate a deal - but that is exactly why the US should just walk away. Force that.

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

Is that the IAEA control agreement that Iran openly violated for the last decade?

        You really are a moron.

        1. mtrueman   2 months ago

Losing a war has consequences. You must have learned that from Afghanistan. Iran agreeing to NPT/IAEA control is probably our best alternative. If you have a better one, why not share it?

            Losing a war?

            1. mtrueman   2 months ago

Good point. Every war from Korea onward resulted in a tie. Not winning a war has consequences.

By the way, if you have a better alternative to Iran agreeing to NPT/IAEA control, now is probably a good time to share it. Don't be shy.

In what world do you live?

                1. mtrueman   2 months ago

Good point. Only in your fantasy world is there a alternative. Which you haven't shared with us.

              2. Neutral not Neutered   2 months ago

It's called removing all nuclear materials, viewing the actual dismantling of the nuclear program including the equipment not destroyed.

Signing an agreement that they will not attempt to restart the program.

US inspectors allowed in at any time without notice.

                1. mtrueman   2 months ago

It might work if the US could get the Israelis to agree to the same terms. My impression is that the Iranians see their nuclear program, weeks away from producing a bomb, as a deterrence from being attacked by the US or Israel. Expecting them to give up their deterrence without similar concessions from their opponents has long been a non starter for them. This war has probably only strengthened that resolve, don't you think?

Do you believe that Trump is capable of exerting this kind of pressure on Israel? Maybe you have another alternative?

                  1. Bruce Hayden   2 months ago

Why? The Iranians have little leverage.

                    1. mtrueman   2 months ago

They have less incentive to give up their deterrence or their sovereignty. What for? To be attacked again in 6 months? Is this what you expect of an Evil Empire run by a Fanatical Death Cult?

          2. Bruce Hayden   2 months ago

How did we lose this conflict? Iran no longer has an Air Force, a navy, or very many missiles and launchers. Top leader is in a coma, missing a leg, in Russia. Most of its other leaders are fighting over virgins in paradise. Their enriched uranium is buried under a mountain, and most of their centrifuges are demolished. All without losing a single American within Iran, and just over a dozen region wide. Not sure how that is losing, on our part, or even tying.

            1. mtrueman   2 months ago

"How did we lose this conflict? "

By not winning. Same way America lost to Afghanistan and Iraq. The Mullahs are still calling the shots, Iranians, if anything, seem to rally round the flag. America's alliances with Europe are in tatters while Iran still enjoys good relations with China and militias in the Middle East. America has failed to recover Iran's nuclear materials, and Iran until America offered a ceasefire, was bombarding Israel and American assets on a daily basis with increasingly deadlier munitions. All this is freely available information. I shouldn't have to be spelling it out for you. I recommend you widen your circle of news sources. You seem to take state propaganda as gospel truth.

              1. Bruce Hayden   2 months ago

Mullahs have one card left - closing the Strait. Militarily, they are toast. The only way left for them to close it, is with prelayed mines. Then, they admitted that they didn’t know where their mines were. Which gave the US the opportunity to clear them.

And, no, there is no real evidence that the Iranian public is rallying around the brutal regime that just murdered 20-30 thousand innocent civilians for protesting.

                1. mtrueman   2 months ago

                  "Militarily, they are toast."

They were always toast. A cakewalk. No navy, no airforce. Kind of like the Taleban, don't you think?

"And, no, there is no real evidence that the Iranian public is rallying around the brutal regime "

Which brutal regime have you got in mind? The one that launched an unprovoked attack on Iran in the middle of peace talks, massacring some 170 unarmed school girls? You're nuts if you expect the Iranian public to embrace those who commit such savagery.

The map features a red line, indicating the position of the U.S. blockade, as well as two pink lines showing the locations of the newly proposed Iranian blockade - one directly in the strait, and the other at the end of the Gulf of Oman near the Arabian Sea.

Swalwell falling fast...the impact at the bottom will be spectacular. Hoisted on his own "Believe all women, Justice Kavanaugh" petard.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/billionaire-boots-eric-swalwell-from-his-mansion-wants-1m-returned/ar-AA20M0G2

Billionaire Stephen Cloobeck went scorched earth in an interview with the California Post, saying he's booted the embattled Swalwell from his Beverly Hills mansion ... and he's looking to recoup $1 million he forked over for the politician's now-defunct gubernatorial run.

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/eric-swalwell-is-guilty-according-to-the-eric-swalwell-standard/ar-AA20NsrR

If Swalwell’s protestations of innocence regarding sexual assault and disqualifying misconduct are true (as opposed to infidelity and impropriety, the distinction he appears to be drawing), he had better hope the public does not hold him to what might be described as the "Eric Swalwell Rules" on such matters.

In 2018, when his party was attempting to bring down Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination, the opportunistic and preening California representative and would-be presidential aspirant loudly adopted the party line. “100% #BelieveSurvivors,” he tweeted.

Referring to accusers as "survivors" bakes in the assumption that they are telling the truth and have survived what they’ve alleged. For many, that’s a fair assumption; for others, it’s not. The notion that "all women," or all "survivors," must always be believed was, and still is, dangerously absurd. Serious accusations should be taken seriously, investigated, and tested by evidence. But ‘Me Too’ sloganeering and dogmas were eagerly embraced by Swalwell et al.

Karma, one might argue, has at last caught up with the young Democrat.

Also, seems likely the Party covered for him.

      https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/california-reporter-claims-eric-swalwell-230013076.html

East Bay political journalist and author Steve Tavares said in a Saturday social media post that allegations surrounding Eric Swalwell's behavior toward women were widely known among local officials shortly after he entered Congress in 2013.

"Shortly after being elected to Congress in 2013, his behavior towards women was known by all levels of our local government and the Alameda County Democratic Party," Tavares wrote.

"I tried repeatedly to get the stories out. I can’t force women to speak out, and when they chose not to, I didn’t push. I also knew that Swalwell was known to threaten litigation."

MeToo was a pretty instructive moment in history. It claimed that serious abuses of women were common despite the fact that feminists spent most of the last three decades on nonsense issues like wearing heels and no pockets in women's clothes are sexist. The movement began strong with Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, and Matt Lauer.

But almost immediately the movement floundered because their examples devolved into claims that consensual sex wasn't really consensual and sex based discrimination became unsubstantiated nonsense that women weren't granted the same respect as men. The real lesson is limited to understanding that some powerful people will use the allure of money and fame to mis-use those around them and everyone needs to be aware of and resist this possibility.

The Kavanaugh hearings were probably the death knell because normal people saw how when the left's original accusations were proven false they retrofitted new "facts" and claimed the accusations were still true. For example the first timeline she advanced was wholly contradicted by the fact that Kavanaugh was away at a college activity for that period of the summer. Instead of accepting error they reviewed his calendar to find a completely different week and claimed it could have happened then, which then immediately evolved into their claim it did happen then. Similar fact patterns exist in other similar activist-created media storms like the Duke and UVA Rape Hoaxes, along with other grievance mythologies like The 1619 Project.

People who follow politics already understood that this is how the left acts, but for normals it was jaw-dropping to see they will openly lie if they believe it will advance their politics. MeToo was always an effort to change the public political environment to match the culture created in Women's Studies classes and other activist environments where facts and truth aren't really relevant. That's how the Duke and UVA Rape Hoaxes able to flourish, and leftists believe this should be the model for the country. Normals find this abhorrent as they should,

          Many times, here's one:

          AI Overview
In January 2018, comedian and actor Aziz Ansari was accused of sexual misconduct by an anonymous woman, referred to as "Grace," who detailed a 2017 date that she described as "the worst night of my life". The allegations sparked a major public debate regarding the nuances of the #MeToo movement, consent, and sexual behavior.

          +2
          The Allegations
The Date: According to the Babe.net article published in January 2018, the woman met Ansari at an Emmy Awards afterparty in September 2017. They later went on a date to his Manhattan apartment.

The Claim: Grace claimed that Ansari behaved coercively, ignoring non-verbal cues that she was uncomfortable, and pushed for sexual acts, even though she didn't feel it was "in the realm of non-consensual" sexual assault, she told Babe.net it was "the worst night of my life".

        3. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 months ago

          Here's an ethical test:

Let's say you go on a date. You have a few drinks and get intoxicated, not falling down drunk or even sloppy drunk, but happy, goofy drunk--as is your date. You soon find yourself engaged in some level of sexual activity, which progresses (or not).

The next day you feel fuzzy and regretful. Were you raped?

      2. Mike Parsons   2 months ago

Kavanaugh + Aziz Ansari were the two biggest polarizing moments for most normies I encounter on a daily basis.

Kavanaugh showed they will nakedly weaponize this thing against quite literally anyone, with the loosest of associations, and will use it as a pretty obvious political cudgel. There was so much separation between Blasey-Ford's testimony and any provable claim, and even if you took her story at face value (which you probably shouldn't as it wasnt backed up by any evidence or witnesses), at worst it was a guy horsing around that did a little kissey kissey on her while playfully wrestling. That's the fucking worst they had, and they made an entire "well horseplay = rape dontchaknow" argument out of this nothingburger, which btw no one can even give any good story that it even happened in the first place.

They showed the game. They showed that yes we will warp any possible story, or make it up out of whole cloth, to take down political opponents. And it was on open display for the public. No one but full on retarded feminists believed that lady.

Ansari showed that the mob they whipped up was fully out of control. That they were out for scalps, for the sake of more scalps, whether they did anything wrong at all. They torpedoed that dude at the height of his career and he never recovered. And what he did amounted to asking your gf "cmon lets fuck though" when she already said "I have a headache". A girl that had completely consensual, boring sex with a C list celeb, turned it into a rape story because it was in vogue to be a victim and me2 hysteria was running wild.

I see more people mention Ansari than anyone else.

        1. Marshal   2 months ago

They remember him easier because he was at least semi-famous. But there have been others, a couple I remember are:

          - There was a low level journalist somewhere in Asia, Hong Kong or Singapore maybe, who was involved with a couple of different women. Making a name for yourself by victim posing has a long history among activists, including by Anita Sarkeesian who got rich off Gamergate in which she was not involved other than being the first activist to attach herself to the controversy.

          - There was a museum employee who slept around and at least one of the various women was pissed and got him fired and blackballed.

Judging the movement by full scope of what they objected to the purpose was similar to that of Title IX: when dating or sex doesn't work out institutions need to punish the men so the women don't feel bad from dealing with the consequences of their choices. One of the first Title IX cases to hit the media was a woman who found out her dream Senior semester abroad was going to be ruined because a freshman hookup who declined a long term relationship with her was among the 30 or so people going. She filed the complaint so she didn't have to be around him on the trip.

If I had to pick a tagline it would be:

          "We'll make it go away".

Dude (Sykuno) invites some chick to stay with him at a Vegas event, in his hotel room. Girl says yes to the free room.

They watch a movie, he puts moves on her. She doesn't say no, she actually gives him head and lets him nut in her mouth. She stays the night again, despite saying she was traumatized. She had every ability to leave, she stayed anyways, for multiple nights.

The next day, he is being flirty with her, without any objection in any way shape or form, she lets him raw dog her. She says she is legally hard of hearing, so she didn't hear him say he was going to finish. He blows his load in her and she is now calling him a rapist.

But now, we are years post me2. The internet is dragging her for being a clout chasing wanna be victim, and I love that she is getting absolutely no traction at all. Me2 jumped the shark

The amount of times these smaller judges have gotten struck down after trying to stop Trump from doing something should be studied in the future. What's his win/loss ratio on these things? 9:1?

      1. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

His appeals win rate is over 90%

    3. JesseAz (RIP CK)   2 months ago

But its the number of wrong inferior court judges that matter. Ask Damon or qb.

You know, I'm going to admit I'm a bit apathetic about this whole Iran thing. My attitude to Iran is that of Nick Gillespie to the trans issue: What's the big deal, it's just about pronouns...

Anyhoo, I kept hearing from Reason that "Trump decides to fight the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz with a blockade! ELOH EL!1!!"

But then I'd hear... from the bullshit corporate news that I DO NOT TRUST as a matter of course- "Trump is blockading Iranian ports".

Now, I'm no Strategic Tactician of war, (nor Lawyer, nor Doctor), but it seems to me that if Iran is blockading the straits of Hormuz with their navy and we blockade their navy, wouldn't that mean that we've blockaded the blockade?

Richard Hanania has an essay arguing that writers using artificial intelligence is fine (basically the equivalent of other tools like search engines and reading glasses)

Oh jesus, here we go again with "reading glasses". What is it about Reading glasses that makes people literally conflate them with robots doing your creative work for you and Gain of Function research?

      2. mad.casual   2 months ago

AFAICT, if more of the written word is garbage because essayists are using shitty regurgitation machines the way they use readers to see what they're writing, people are more likely to toss their work into the "bad information environment" bin rather than the "tenuously plausible theory" bin.

"it's completely reasonable that the city would charge rent for the public land these private businesses's streateries are permanently occupying"

I keep hoping that the recent "Reason" drift away from libertarian principles will be corrected, but alas! No, Christian, the only reasonable position for a libertarian to take here would be to oppose "the city" owning any public land at all. Or have you forgotten "the tragedy of the commons" that used to feature so prominently in libertarian philosophy? Perhaps people who have lived in overcrowded urban cages for too long lose sight of the basics and come to believe that cities are the natural state of affairs?
