TSA Policies Become Slightly Less Stupid

Plus: Texas flooding update, shark policy, tariffs affecting Prime Day, and more...

The TSA ends its stupidest rule ever after 20 years of pointlessness: The Transportation Security Administration has started to phase out its rule requiring travelers to take off their shoes before going through security after, oh, just 20 years of forcing everyone to show off their ugly toenails in public. Per The New York Times, "the agency has not officially announced this change and did not confirm the new policy, which appears to be taking effect at airports across the country." The report relies on an anonymous source but is apparently corroborated by the recent accounts of travelers. Caleb Harmon-Marshall, a former TSA officer, first reported the soft launch of this policy via his travel newsletter.

"Why now?" Harmon-Marshall asks. "I think it's politics, not security. A handful of lawmakers have recently ramped up criticism of the TSA, with some even floating the idea of dismantling the agency altogether. From complaints about long lines to inconsistent screening experiences, the pressure has been mounting. And this shoe change? It feels like a direct response to that pressure." It appears to be happening first at major airports, then trickling down to all of them.

The policy was put in place because of Richard Reid, a British-born criminal who had been radicalized and trained by Al Qaeda, who boarded American Airlines Flight 63 between Paris and Miami in December 2001 wearing shoes full of explosives. The bombs did not go off; keen flight attendants noticed his suspicious behavior—including lighting matches on the plane—and tackled him, sustaining bite wounds; passengers and crew members helped to prevent Reid from detonating the bombs, with an off-duty doctor even tranquilizing him for the duration of the flight. The plane emergency-landed in Boston, where Reid was apprehended by law enforcement. He was later sentenced to three life terms plus 110 years in prison without parole. And so, because of this true psycho, the rule was born five years later, in 2006, which itself defies logic. The TSA has, to date, never caught anyone with bombs hidden in their shoes. (And many people accept it as a foregone conclusion that the Reid shoe bombs would have downed the plane, when that's not necessarily true.)

I wonder if one unintended consequence of this policy change will be fewer people signing up and paying for PreCheck, which allows preapproved people to keep their shoes on (and their laptops in their bags, and a few other tweaks to the process).

But the shoe-removal policy is far from universal, as international travelers routinely notice. "You don't take your shoes off anywhere but in the U.S.—not in Israel, in Amsterdam, in London," aviation security expert Yossi Sheffi told The Washington Post back in 2011. "We all know why we do it here, but this seems to be a make-everybody-feel-good thing rather than a necessity." Still, it's a good thing for the TSA to begin to roll back some of its pointless, ineffective security theater, especially if the policies haven't been proven useful at actually catching would-be bombers over the years.

Fixing what went wrong in Texas: "The number of people killed in devastating Central Texas floods surpassed 100 on Monday as emergency officials spent another day searching through snapped trees and wrecked homes for those who remain missing—and as clouds threatened to bring more rain and flooding to the region," reports The Texas Tribune. It looks like 25 people are still reported missing, with 28 children and 56 adults dead in Kerr County. So far, seven people are reported dead in Travis County, six in Kendall, three in Burnet, two in Williamson, and one in Tom Green County. President Donald Trump will visit Hill Country later this week.

"People aren't ignoring warnings on purpose," wrote Republican state Sen. Paul Bettencourt on X. "There are simply too many in a day, and they are turning off their phones at night. In times of natural disaster, we must have a safeguard to ensure this kind of emergency is not ignored. So we are going to combine 'Old-Tech' sirens (emergency alert overrides that can't be turned off) with 'New-Tech' to alert Texans to get to higher ground. This will help day or night, and 'New-Tech' needs a Natural Disaster alert level on cellphones that can NOT be user-suppressed. That way, even if the cell tower's down, old tech still works."

There's an interesting strain of critique that's emerged in the aftermath of this disaster that's basically: People are so inundated by bullshit flood warnings that they don't actually respond when there are real ones; the government has overused its comms to the point that people can't distinguish real threats from minor ones. I think it's possible that this is true—and the item below provides an example of a small way another government far away engages in this same thing—but there's another very obvious reason why these floods were so devastating: The rains escalated drastically overnight, while people were sleeping. They just weren't awake to assess what was happening and take action. Or, as my colleague Christian Britschgi wrote, "the real culprit was bad weather, not bad public policy."

Scenes from New York: In Rockaway Beach, where I live, drones operated by the New York City Fire Department, the New York Police Department, and the emergency management office for the city spotted eight sharks over the last few days. But it's hard to tell whether this is because they deployed more shark-surveillance drones than usual—so the sharks were always there, they're just catching footage of more of them—or if there's been a spike in shark activity this summer. There's also no information given about what type or size of sharks, which actually really matters when you're trying to assess risk. Either way, city policy dictates that they close the beach (even to the surfers) for one hour following shark sightings, which I think is WRONG! Give people the information and then let them decide their risk appetite!

It's possible that there's been a real uptick in shark activity because of a dead whale that washed up on shore a few weeks ago; there are also theories out there that sharks remain attracted to beaches where dead whales have been buried (like ours, after the carcass washed up on shore), but Australian scientists have been hard at work trying to get to the bottom of that.

For what it's worth, most surfers don't really mind being in sharky water; it's sort of an assumption that there's weird stuff in the ocean that poses some threat to us. We take sea urchin spikes in the feet and jellyfish stings. Cone snails can kill you! (The real threat? Missing a truly great wave.)

???? Another shark sighting at Rockaway Beach.

Around 6:00 PM, our drone team spotted a shark just 100 feet from swimmers near Beach 113. The sighting spanned Beach 113 to Beach 115. Thanks to our innovative and multifaceted public safety team—leveraging drone technology—we were… pic.twitter.com/xJM2FDjDOf

  • "The global supply of heavy rare earths hinges in part on the outcome of a months-long battle between a rebel army and the Chinese-backed military junta in the hills of northern Myanmar," reports Reuters.
  • You might notice that Amazon Prime Day discounts are worse this year—and tariffs are to blame. "Economic indicators have so far portrayed a resilient US consumer, but the long-term outlook could be muddied by short-term shopper savviness—such as buying automobiles before tariffs take effect," reports Bloomberg. "Consumption declined slightly in May. Consumer sentiment increased in June. Prime Day could help clarify the signals for the rest of the summer."

This will never get off the ground (pun intended). The moment someone gets so much as a boo-boo on a plane, and it will be back in force.

Remember allowing passengers to carry pen-knives again? That lasted about 2 weeks and the steward/ess union went apeshit and it was back to trying to remember to put the knife into the shaving kit before it went into the checked bag.

    Ripples....

The Labor Department's jobs report for the month of June showed that the number of foreign-born workers declined by 348,000 from May — while the number of foreign-born workers has declined by more than 543,000 jobs since January.

By contrast, the number of U.S.-born workers increased by 830,000 from May to June, and is also over 2 million higher than when the second Trump administration began in January.

Man. Americans coming off welfare programs really sucks.

    More ripples....

A new report from the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) found that the prices of imported goods have fallen this year and have dipped faster than overall goods prices since February.

Overall goods prices in the PCE index jumped by 0.4% from December through May, which corresponds to a 1% annualized rate, according to the CEA report. Meanwhile, the imported component of PCE goods prices dropped by 0.1% during that same time period.

God dammit. My econ 101 model seems to be broken.

"Either way, city policy dictates that they close the beach (even to the surfers) for one hour following shark sightings"

Creating more bullshit warnings to the point where the people will rebel against the rules and 100% ignore the warnings. Jus t like the Texas flood warnings and local tornado warnings...if I hid in the basement for the hours indicated for every severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning, well, it'd be a LOT of hours wasted.

"Give people the information and then let them decide their risk appetite!"

People are notoriously incapable of performing actual risk assessments. Someone will drive 500 miles on highways to get to a beach, then refuse to go in the water saying "I'm afraid of getting eaten by a shark!". Which one is ACTUALLY more dangerous.

Despite SCOTUS ruling 2 weeks ago, judge orders the president to violate congressional law and pay planned parenthood their due. The ruling is directed at the president, not congress. Magically the 60 page ruling was written very quickly and totally wasn't written before the court heard any arguments. Then again, easy to write 60 pages when it contains no legal argumentation.

The Transportation Security Administration has started to phase out its rule requiring travelers to take off their shoes before going through security after, oh, just 20 years of forcing everyone to show off their ugly toenails in public. Per The New York Times, "the agency has not officially announced this change and did not confirm the new policy, which appears to be taking effect at airports across the country."

Wednesday of last week I had to take shoes off. Sunday return I did not.

Even the Taliban said this was too far. I guess he'll spend 3 years just jacking off on her.

Afghan man, 45, 'marries girl aged SIX before Taliban intervene... and say he must wait until she is NINE'

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14860725/Afghan-man-45-marries-girl-SIX.html

A six-year-old girl has allegedly been forced to marry a 45-year-old man in Afghanistan after she was given away for money.

The haunting photo of an older man and a little girl standing together horrified even the Taliban, who intervened with the union.

The youngster had allegedly been exchanged by her father for money to a man who already has two wives, it was reported by Amu.tv.

The marriage was allegedly set to take place on Friday in Helmand province but the Taliban stepped in and arrested both men involved.

No charges were brought against them but they have forced the creep to wait until the girl is nine before he can take her home, local media said.

Charlie Kirk, the Salem radio host, revealed that he got some calls before President Trump signed the reconciliation package into law on Independence Day. It was from folks whom he described as being from the ‘ruling class.’ What they told him was a political blunder of epic proportions: they wanted to pressure Trump to push for mass amnesty.

The reasoning is beyond idiotic: they feel that the mass deportations will cost the Republican Party the midterms, and the base will accept this policy change because it’ll work itself out or something.

Apparently the people who brought this up to him are all Republican legislators in the California state assembly. Which means it's basically a bunch of people who are getting NGO paychecks and fat Chamber of Commerce donations that don't want to lose their gardners and maids.

Trump got in to office primarily on his promise to completely upend the Hart-Celler era of immigration in this country. Pulling a 1986 Reagan amnesty would single-handedly destroy the GOP, and I don't think I'm being hyperbolic there.

It absolutely is true. I've turned off warnings because I was getting inundated with 'high temp warnings' - I live in a fucking desert, no shit its over 100F, its *summer* - and they are for a place 200 miles away!

Flash flood warnings for Phoenix when I live in Yuma aren't useful.

Just for the record, the water near a beach has a name in the shark world; it is called 'the dining room'.

That same million years ago, I was taught to spend at least 15 minutes observing the ocean before going in. Notice the tide state, the current direction, any "rip currents', and if there were sharks or porpoise nearby.
(Then we went in regardless; but we were aware)

Larry Schweikart, over on X has a hypothesis.

      https://x.com/larryschwe94560/status/1942053106390614045?s=46&t=qeA47-JjK6vq0pfnxg60dA

You guys arrn't gonna like this but this is what I think is happening re: Epstein.

      2) I think they found Ft. Knox of human trafficking.

      3) Beginning in Feb., we saw a very sharp uptick in human trafficking busts---50, 80 people at a time, dozens of kids rescued. This has continued to present. In my substack I presented a whole list:

      4) I do not believe in coincidences. I think these busts were ALL based on info derived from the Epstein Files. I think they have multiple, large investigations and busts in the works.

      5) Releasing anything might provide a tip-off, hence, they're gonna say, "Naw, didn't find nuthin."

      6) I think they view the ongoing success in busting these rings as far more important than making stuff public just to show good will toward MAGA.

      7) They think the harms from not releasing are far less than the gains they will get by continuing to use them as a source.

His hypotheses have panned out decently before so I think Larry may be onto something here. I’m going to take a wait and see approach right now.

I’ve considered this hypothesis as well, especially after all the big busts you’ve mentioned, which I wondered at the time they were reported if they were related. Can’t remember so many in such a short time in my life.

I’m not familiar with him, what other predictions has he been right about?

5, 6, and 7 also aren't mutually exclusive. There are MAGA cops, journalists, etc. who would agree that getting kids out is more important than making MAGA look good in the short term. There are anti-MAGA cops, journalists, etc. who are more than happy to keep things as wrapped up as possible and have a proven track record of trying to keep all the various radioactive materials in the same bag until well after it's obvious a chain reaction is taking place.

the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/10-arrested-after-ambush-on-texas-ice-detention-facility-officials-say/ar-AA1I9KeG

State and federal officials announced on Monday that 10 people were arrested for engaging in a "planned ambush" on an ICE detention facility in Texas over the Fourth of July holiday.

The individuals were charged with attempted murder of a federal officer, according to court records.

The incident occurred at the Prairieland Detention Facility in Alvarado, Texas, on Friday, according to Nancy Larson, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas.

At approximately 10:37 p.m., 10 to 12 individuals dressed in black, military-style clothing began shooting fireworks and engaging in acts of vandalism at the facility, Larson said during a press conference.

Larson said the incident "was a planned ambush with the intent to kill ICE corrections officers."

Some individuals drew correction officers out of the facility using the fireworks while others damaged vehicles and vandalized the facility with graffiti, Larson said.

When an Alvarado police officer arrived on the scene, one of the individuals shot him in the neck. Another individual shot 20 to 30 rounds at the facility correction officers, according to Larson.

All assailants fled the scene, though all have since been apprehended, the U.S. attorney said.

Bradford Morris, who goes by Megan, was one of the suspects that allegedly fled the scene, according to court records. He was stopped a short while later, with a magazine clip and Kevlar vests.

A shooter opened fire at a Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, on Monday morning, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said.

Border Patrol agents and local police helped "neutralize" the shooter, according to the spokesperson. Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley Sector, which has six stations along the border, reported that the person is dead.

The shooter was identified as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda, who had an assault rifle and was carrying a utility vest, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said Monday. Agents had returned fire and killed him, Rodriguez said.

Fuck me running, this was NBCs take:

"Man killed after exchanging gunfire with Border Patrol agents in Texas".

They want people to infer that Border Patrol agents were trying to arrest him and he fought back. I know there are many people calling out the press on stuff like this, but holy fuck, this is an outright lie. It was an unprovoked attack followed by an exchange. This is more than burying the lede, it is pouring a concrete foundation on top of it.

This is not true. Libertarians fail because they are not part of the education system where kids and young adults should be learning these things. Nor are conservatives part of it.

"We" as in America fail to teach this because the people tasked with teaching our children want socialism and have no interest in teaching the truth about it. Until we drive those people from control of our education system nothing will change.

Until we drive those people from control of our education system nothing will change.

When was the last time you met a teacher or professor who was retired from industry? Academia has become incestuous. The entire institution needs to be reformed.

That's a good thought, but the core of why that has become a problem is Ed-School radicals. With a relative handful of people where we train future teachers they ensure every class incorporates socialist nonsense and those who disagree are culled from the profession. Then their state official and union allies require certifications only people degreed in these programs can meet the requirements for. Effectively they've locked out any competing views.

The result is that kids can't read or do basic math much less engage in the critical thinking they bewilderingly claim to be pursuing. But they damn sure know who to vote for to stop the "fascists".

Fun fact - the first issuance of Education degrees coincides with the creation of the Progressive party around 1920. The era of industrial hygiene, labor reform, institutionalized medicine and education reform. The long march to craft a better American citizen.

    https://nypost.com/2025/07/05/us-news/sweeping-federal-operation-nabs-264-suspects-including-migrants/

Hundreds of accused murderers, thieves and sex offenders, including illegal migrants, nabbed in sweeping federal operation

Federal authorities have swept up 264 wanted criminals — including two illegal migrants wanted for sex crimes — in New Jersey in an ongoing mission dubbed “Operation Apex Hammer” that nabbed suspects wanted for murder, robbery and sexual offenses, including those against children.

Those arrested include 17 homicide suspects, 95 gang members, including several others wanted for serious violent and sexual offenses, federal officials said.

U.S. Marshal Juan Mattos Jr. and Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba called the collaboration among federal, state, and local law enforcement “a major success in combating violent crime and restoring public safety.”

In a separate case, authorities reported that Darlin Franco-Guzman, a 25-year-old Honduran national living in the U.S. illegally, was apprehended in Trenton on June 10. He was wanted in Baltimore County, Maryland, for burglary and the attempted sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl.

Does keeping your shoes on make it more comfortable when the TSA feels you up?

While taking shoes off is annoying, it's not high up on my list of TSA transgressions.

Without comment on the stupidity of TSA rules, while currently sitting at a Canadian airport, I don’t really want to hear about how shitty the TSA is. My flight out was about as smooth as it can be (if we’re to do the security theater nonsense). I did have to remove my shoes, but did NOT have to take out laptop. I am traveling with 3 separate synthesizers and did not have to remove any of those.

On my way out of Canada (in Canadian airport security), me and my son were “randomly” stopped for a full search of our carry on luggage. I had to fully unpack everything, and allow them to test every bit of the gear in those bags, and then had to carry it all open to the actual security checkpoint for them to search it all again. I was not fucking amused.

As an American who has traveled to many places, I very much tire of hearing how bad America is, or how something is only bad when America does it, while others get a free pass. It’s getting very old, very quick.

Rather than the TSA theater, what could have happened is that passengers themselves could be seen as part of the militia. The plane in Shanksville on 9/11 self-organized because some passengers had experience playing team sports in high school. I doubt militia training would have enabled someone to fly/land a plane to produce a better outcome but its possible and even more possible that with real training the hijackers would have been taken down before they entered the cabin and killed the crew. Reid was initially tackled only because of the two flight attendants - only later did passengers join in.

The easiest way to harden civilian targets is to harden civilians themselves. It eliminates the fear mongering that pols encourage - the abdication of responsibility to 'professionals' - reduces the notion that the sole responsibility of the sheep is to 'go shopping so the terrorists don't win'.

Well, I did have to get my wallet out . . .

I had left it in my back pocket, because at most airports, they don't ask you to remove it if it's not metal. At Denver, you don't even know if you're going to the scanner or the metal detector until you're at the front of the line. Guy started flipping out, going off about how I could be carrying a 'Credit Card Knife', whatever that is, but instead of inspecting my wallet, decided I needed a full-body groping.

So, I'll continue to complain about the TSA for as long as they exist.

I'll also note that in their 20+ years of existence, they have prevented exactly zero potential terrorist attacks.

When I was 17 I went to visit my sister living in Miami. Went to south beach one day and spent some time in the water. That night watching the news, there was helicopter coverage on the local news of a school of hammerhead sharks swimming just a bit deeper than where everyone was swimming.

The global supply of heavy rare earths hinges in part on the outcome of a months-long battle between a rebel army and the Chinese-backed military junta in the hills of northern Myanmar

It wouldn't, if we just, you know, mined them here.

If you're unusually smart/talented, your primary purpose in life is to help lift up others who weren't born/raised as lucky as you were.

Who is Joe McReynolds, why is he determining my primary purpose in life, and why is it different than what I would determine?
