Original Sin, the Biden Cover-Up Book, Is Better Late Than Never

Even readers who are profoundly distrustful of Jake Tapper should pick up a copy.

Jake Tapper (Annabelle Gordon/Sipa USA/Newscom)

The public at large is now well aware that Democratic Party elites worked to hide President Joe Biden's cognitive decline from the public, and the mainstream media was either complicit in this scheme or incurious enough to unmask it. Critics of the media, including many conservative, libertarian, leftist, and independent thinkers, have thus been enjoying something of a victory lap—the exposure of the Biden cover-up is a great told you so moment for contrarian commentators.

You are reading Free Media from Robby Soave and Reason. Get more of Robby's on-the-media, disinformation, and free speech coverage.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

Given all this, nonliberals were clearly disinclined to extend the benefit of the doubt to CNN's Jake Tapper, who has just published a book about Biden's decline. That book, co-authored by Alex Thompson, an Axios reporter who did pursue the Biden decline beat with some fervency, is called Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again. Tapper has drawn criticism, including from Megyn Kelly, for previously dismissing Lara Trump when she raised the issue of Biden's infirmity. In response, Tapper asserts that his dismissiveness was a huge mistake and that he is ashamed that he did not pursue this story more aggressively.

In any case, the book should be judged on its own merits. And even readers who are profoundly distrustful of Tapper should pick up a copy. It's very good.

Original Sin contains a wealth of new information, even for people who have closely followed developments in the cognitive decline cover-up. Here are some of my reactions to the relevant passages.

  • Tapper and Thompson persuasively demonstrate that the shielding of Biden from public scrutiny was accomplished by a shockingly limited number of top aides, nicknamed the "politburo." Just four or five people were in the know: advisers Mike Donilon, Steve Richetti, and Anita Dunn; Chief of Staff Ron Klain; and an incredibly small handful of others. By carefully limiting his public appearances, they managed to estrange Biden from his own Cabinet (though not entirely), congressional leaders, and ultimately voters.
  • Contrary to some media assertions, Biden's cognitive decline was not a sudden development late in the campaign. His capacities had been greatly diminished for years. If anything, the real turning point was the death of his son, Beau, in 2015. While he still had some good days in the following years, there was a clear difference in his overall behavior.
  • To that end, the COVID-19 pandemic was an exceedingly lucky break for Biden, because it gave him an excuse to campaign virtually, in a carefully controlled environment. The demands of a regular campaign would have exposed Biden as unfit for office, even in 2020.
  • The decision to run for reelection was made by Biden, in consultation with his family: Jill Biden, Hunter Biden, and other people with the last name Biden. It was not made by his aides. It was announced to them, and they did not protest. In fact, the aides had essentially learned never to question the Biden family: Staffers who did ask questions were quickly sidelined. Jill Biden's senior adviser, Anthony Bernal, was a particularly militant enforcer.
  • While the politburo was highly effective at hiding Biden, many Democrats had ample reason to suspect something was amiss. Anonymous former Cabinet officials tell Tapper and Thompson that their (infrequent) meetings with the president were so painful that it made them fearful for the country's national security. It is telling that none of them went public about this at the time, a decision that should haunt Cabinet officials who aspire to future office: most notably, Pete Buttigieg and, of course, Kamala Harris.

What should we take away from all of this? Next time a president virtually disappears from the public, refuses to meet with officials in the mornings and evenings, and looks like a shell of his former self during the rare moments he is out and about, the media might just want to ask a question or two. Even so, better late than never.

You have got to be kidding me.

Contrary to some media assertions, Biden's cognitive decline was not a sudden development late in the campaign. His capacities had been greatly diminished for years.

Correct, people ON THE RIGHT were saying it during the 2020 campaign.

To that end, the COVID-19 pandemic was an exceedingly lucky break for Biden, because it gave him an excuse to campaign virtually, in a carefully controlled environment.

Ya think? "Joe is campaigning from his basement" was a meme/theme ON THE RIGHT during the 2020 campaign. Thanks Jake Tapper & Robby for telling us about this 5 years later.

the shielding of Biden from public scrutiny was accomplished by a shockingly limited number of top aides

No......Joe was not shielded from public scrutiny ON THE RIGHT. The right knew and talked about it his entire Presidency. He was shielded from public scrutiny on the left by media that caters to the left. INCLUDING JAKE TAPPER.

even readers who are profoundly distrustful of Tapper should pick up a copy.

Uh, fuck that, and fuck him. I don't welcome him to the party, even belatedly.

"the COVID-19 pandemic was an exceedingly (well engineered psyop) for the benefit of Biden."
Robby is stunned to discover that Biden was a demented puppet and it didn't just become obvious in a debate in 2024. Seems crazy but Jake Fucking Tapper brought receipts! This is really the dimmest shiny object that has appeared on the horizon in many years. Every detail and every named member of the politburo were well known while Biden was in the fucking basement. I keep thinking that maybe, just maybe, Reason will discover the Biden crime family. I guess we'll have to wait for Jake Tapper to sell a book about it.

If the book came with a resignation and a heartfelt apology for being liars propping up a dead puppet president who oversaw some of the worst violations of our rights and further partisan corruption of every facet of our government then I'd give it a read. This is just him attempting to restore credibility when it is shown he and the rest of the media have none.

The sad (?) truth about Joe Biden is that he wasn't actually very impressive in his prime; watch the clips from the 1980s where he's browbeating a few reporters with a cavalcade of easily verifiable lies about his academic record in support of his claim that he was somehow the smartest guy in that particular room, it's not even necessary to know who those reporters were to know that such a claim has probably never been true of the man. Or flash back to 1988 when he was forced to drop out of the Dem primary (and make way for Dukakis) after being caught plagiarizing his alleged life story from someone else's autobiography.

The sad thing for the US Media and Electorate is that it took so many two tries to figure out that in a faceoof between himself and donald fucking trump (a man who's actually too narcissistic to be fit for participation in US Politics), Joe Biden was actually the more arrogant of the two...

I don't even know what to say to this. JFC, Robby. This is embarrassing. Tapper should be in prison or, better yet, hung in the public square for treason, which is what this was. He didn't just not "push hard enough." He was actively involved in the coverup of a FAKE PRESIDENCY, just like the majority of your media brethren. Anything short of Tapper's obliteration is a further admission of your complicity.

      incurious enough to unmask it.

Right. People aren't incurious enough to do the most important thing in their job. Perhaps Robbie should consider how the media understands their job such that discovering the biggest cover up in American history is not a part of it.

Answers are there if you train yourself to ask the right questions. Once you understand this has to be true for them to just be "incurious" you realize there is no difference between cover up and "incurious". It's just a slightly different level where the failure happens.

      From 2019 to 2021...

It's not clear when or whether we'll have presidential debates but if we do, they will certainly go a long way to settling questions about the mental acuity of Trump and Biden.

      https://reason.com/2020/08/20/americans-rightly-tune-out-to-democratic-national-convention/

Trump mental issues but not Biden.

      https://reason.com/2020/05/08/we-dont-need-a-psychiatric-diagnosis-to-assess-the-presidents-obvious-faults/

And one case of its good Biden doesn't say much.

I don’t remember which staff member it was, but remember from the “who are we voting for” article in 2020, one of the staff alluded to Biden not being fully on his game, and gave that as a reason to vote for him: because an ineffective president couldn’t do as much damage!

In response, Tapper asserts that his dismissiveness was a huge mistake and that he is ashamed that he did not pursue this story more aggressively.

This is not a response. It's a mistake because he was wrong, but the question is why was he dismissive which to my knowledge remains not just unadmitted but unexamined by Tapper other than to deny reality. He ignores this question because it gets to the heart of the bigger issue: that he and the rest of the left media function as extensions of the Dem Party and left ideology generally. Journalists idealistically claim the mantle of Watchdog but in reality they are Guard Dogs for Dems. This is the difference between branding and reality. The best comparison is that they are Praetorians. They occasionally have differing institutional interests than other Dem/left constituencies but their primary and overriding priority is the protection and advancement of Dem/left politics.

Next time a president virtually disappears from the public, refuses to meet with officials in the mornings and evenings, and looks like a shell of his former self during the rare moments he is out and about, the media might just want to ask a question or two.

We already know why he's doing this, so he can use it as a justification to attack Trump on these same grounds. First say "never again" and then ask yourself when they think this will next be relevant. It's a pre-emptive move to mitigate his own obvious and proven double standards.

Sarc does the same thing in every comment thread hoping by attacking others their pointing out his own failures will seem less damning.

Original Sin, the Biden Cover-Up Book, Is Better Late Than Never

Robby... the book is NOT better late than never. The book is a lie. The book is not telling the truth belatedly, the author is lying about his own role in the coverup. That's like a guy who murders his wife apologizing for reporting the body late, but taking no responsibility for bashing her head in.

Here's two people giving a play-by-play, with receipts on how Jake Tapper actively participated in the Biden coverup.

That was not the purpose of my analogy. I wasn't saying "Jake Tapper is essentially a murderer", my analogy was purely mechanical for the purposes of illustrating that he was not a slow-witted-but-innocent bystander to a crime, but an active participant.

Tapper is claiming that he merely didn't see the crime-- and his only transgression was a failure to notice and report it in a timely manner. The problem is, Tapper was an active participant in what was one of the biggest, wide-ranging coverups of an executive scandal-- certainly in modern history. He didn't just 'not notice' or 'not report'... or was 'too trusting' of executive sources. He actively ran interference and publicly attacked anyone suggesting Biden was non compos mentis.

        I stand by my analogy.

Of course not. The biggest change in Dem politics in my lifetime is how openly the Presidency is run for the financial benefit of the families rather than the party. Tapper's book is not a serious examination of what happened, its an exercise in ass-covering through narrative manipulation.

You're not going to sit there and tell me that the media didn't know and were 'duped by aides' when they failed to do what they claim is their job - while the rest of the country was telling them what was happening they were providing covering support for the narrative.

Why not LAST time? Where's the accountability? Where's the collapse of the fourth estate? Who the f was using the autopen in this country between 2020 and 2024? Why don't you ask THAT question OR CARE ABOUT ITS ANSWER?

Because you're trash. You, Tapper - you're all the same. Trump is right. You are fake news.

Tapper's toilet paper is literally nothing but the media pathetically trying to defend its lost credibility. It should be the kindling on the burning cross we nail him - and you - and every other JoUrNaLiSt to.

The worst part is, we KNOW YOU ARE LYING THROUGH YOUR TEETH when you say "Next time a president virtually disappears from the public ... the media might just want to ask a question or two," because you - YOU ROBBY SOAVE - you won't even have the basic journalistic integrity to do such a thing.

Because your goal isn't journalism. It's narrative.

You don't hate journalists enough. You think you do, but you don't.

I look forward to Tapper's next book about Trump's obvious decline as well; mentally *and* physically. Let's dig into the cover-up by the official physician, who declared Trump fantastically fit because he wins (or is allowed to win) a few golf games. Trump is a morbidly obese elderly man who has a very limited life span remaining, then we'll be saddled with Vance, who actually believes the demagoguery that Trump has been spouting for years.

Trump will finish his term out with ease, but nice fever dream there. I am sorry your party destroyed it's credibility for decades to come.

For a less sycophantic take on the Tapper book, read Matt Taibbi's piece.

The Democrats should just own this and run Jill in 2028.

She's by far the most experienced candidate.
