Markets in Panic
Plus: Emhoff scandal, Iran and Hezbollah possibly striking Israel, Nirvana facts, and more...

The first domino: A bad U.S. economic outlook, reflected in Friday's jobs report, helped prompt major stock sell-offs globally over the weekend.
"Japanese stocks collapsed on Monday in their biggest single day rout since the 1987 Black Monday sell-offs," reports Reuters, with the Nikkei 225 index falling 12.4 percent and the Topix index falling 12.2 percent. The Kospi index in South Korea fell more than 10 percent. Equity markets felt the pain in Taiwan, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China, though to a lesser degree. "At one point, the plunge in Japanese and Korean stocks tripped a 'circuit breaker' mechanism that halts trading to allow markets to digest large fluctuations," reports The New York Times. "But even after those mandatory breathers, the sell-off in stocks seemed to accelerate. Jitters spread to the debt market, prompting a halt in trading in Japanese government bonds as well."
Wall Street's "fear gauge"—the VIX—jumped to its highest level since 2020, when the pandemic prompted a wild market fluctuation. "The market response is a reflection of the deteriorating U.S. economic outlook," Jesper Koll, a director at financial services firm Monex Group, told the Times. "It was a New York sneeze that forced Japanese pneumonia."
The U.S. jobs report, released Friday, found that hiring slowed significantly in July. Unemployment continued its slow creep upward—4.3 percent, the highest since October 2021—and wage growth eased a bit. The jobs report also revised the May and June numbers downward, by a combined 29,000 jobs, indicating that the July downshift did not come out of nowhere. It also "stoked fear of a coming recession" due to something known as the "Sahm Rule," named for economic Claudia Sahm, who identified in 2019 a useful recession indicator that our July jobs report has unfortunately met (more on that from Reason's Eric Boehm).
Inflation has showed plenty of signs of cooling a bit, responding to Federal Reserve rate hikes, but the jobs report means a rate cut "could be on the table" as soon as September, according to Fed Chair Jerome Powell.
In other words, the aspirational "soft landing"—a cooling down of inflation without triggering a recession—may not in fact be materializing. And these American warning signs are leading to global ripple effects.
Bloomberg's Joe Weisenthal has, I think, the smartest and most concise take on what's going on, for those who indulge:
10 THOUGHTS ON TODAY'S BIG MARKET SELOFF
In today's 5 Things newsletter, I jotted down a bunch of random stuff about this moment in stocks, crypto, FX, and macro.

QUICK HITS
- The U.S. government believes Iran and Hezbollah will retaliate against Israel for the recent assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut.
- Per tabloid reporting, which was partially confirmed by the campaign, Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, had an affair during his first marriage (not to Harris). The woman he had an affair with allegedly became pregnant and did not keep the baby, though the campaign has not acknowledged or confirmed that part.
- "Belgium's Olympic committee announced Sunday that it would withdraw its team from the mixed relay triathlon at the Paris Olympics after one of its competitors who swam in the Seine River fell ill," reports the Associated Press. "After a spring with an abnormal amount of rainfall, tests of the river's water found that the levels of E. coli bacteria were more than 20 times higher than what World Triathlon considers acceptable," wrote Reason's Natalie Dowzicky last week. "But the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, still jumped into the Seine earlier this month in an effort to instill confidence that the waterway was just fine. But a small dip is very different from submerging yourself for hours of racing."
This is the most French possible thing that could have happened when Paris hosted the Olympics:
Running with a really stupid idea because it sounds cool, then somehow ending up fucking over the Belgians. https://t.co/K6Id4CUVV5

Nobody here predicted that.
I can't believe these markets aren't thinking of the Big Guy. Bidenomics made them, and they damn well better respect the genius that did all the work.
He should be on Mt. Rushmore!
More like Mount Flushmore, amirite?
No, Flushless. Got to keep water usage down!
They already have a picture of it.

Some people have real talent.
Someone needs to replace insurrectionists like Washington and Jefferson. How about Biden and Harris? Who has accomplished more?
Scream (with or without Dave) > Foo Fighters > Nirvana.
Wrong place, was not intended as a reply.
Pure retardation.
Alt: ok, zoomer.
Fuck off, Buttplug, you dirty pedo, and quit socking as me.
It also "stoked fear of a coming recession" due to something known as the "Sahm Rule," named for economic Claudia Sahm
Simple fix: change the definition, change the rule.
AIUI, that rule is nonsense anyway, dreamed up from correlation over too short a period to be reliable, too convoluted to be useful. Sort of like my dog farted a week ago, three days ago it was cloudy, yesterday a bird crashed into my window, and today it rained. Wow, what a coinkydink!
The fact the rule includes a measure that includes government spending is dumb enough.
Booming economy!
Stock market goes boom!
Debt bubble goes pop! Always.
A bad U.S. economic outlook, reflected in Friday's jobs report, helped prompt major stock sell-offs globally over the weekend.
The economy knows that Trump is coming!
Naah. The market is frightened that Harris is gaining ground.
Its not Biden's fault, its global you peanuts - some Pedo in GA
Don't knock the pedo's financial acumen. Apparently he just made $400,000 on the stock market without even trying.
Like a post which is not a lie, that was accidental on his part. If turd had been trying, you could change the sign on that number to a negative.
It’s a vast right-wing conspiracy to accomplish one of two things: a) Get Trump elected and make him look awesome as the economy turns around, or b) Make sure Kamala gets blamed for the the shitty economy after she’s sworn in.
It’s dastardly really.
Where's Joe?

To be fair, Biden has been calling Harris president for years.
Polls notwithstanding, it looks like a lot of Wall Street is expecting the Harris-Biden economic plan to get another five years.
RFK jr. actually had a bear in his trunk in NYC. No joke.
We all owe Jeffy an apology. He's clearly smarter than the rest of us.
Nope. Facts changed. Don’t blame me, that’s the rule.
So youre saying bears in trunks is a Democrat thing? RFK/jeff. Story checks out.
60s Democrats aren't Jeffy-style Democrats.
60s democrats were just starting to have the Marxists take over. Moynihan was a celebrated Democrat who was against welfare or race based policy.
MAGA Moynihan.
Nirvana's Nevermind was released 12,000 days ago. Its release date is closer chronologically to Fidel Castro taking control of Cuba than to today.
I hate getting old.
You think you're old? I was alive for both of these events.
You’re so old, you read that sentence and thought it only connoted two chronological events!
The day the cappuccino machines all backed up at once.

Well, thanks. I had to think about that one for a minute. But same here.

The “woman”? Such bigotry.
Calling a biologist before every date is exhausting.

"...after one of its competitors who swam in the Seine River fell ill," reports the Associated Press.
Of all the toilets in the world, why would you jump into a French one.
Imported Italian marble?
The mayor advertised the time to his little dip, some of the locals took the opportunity to shit in the river at just that time.
Seriously, if your only option for doing the triathlon is having the athletes swim in a sewage-choked river, just don't do the event and don't have the countries run qualifiers for the Olympic trials. These athletes do all kinds of events, not just the Olympics. I'm sure they'll get over it being canceled if it means not getting infected with some kind of brain-eating organism.
I’ll say this, at least–there should have been full-blown riots and assassinations of British government officials after the Rotterham and Rochdale scandals were exposed. If you’re not going to start clapping government officials over allowing child sex trafficking to happen because those officials don't want to rock the Glorious Diversity boat, then you've effectively allowed yourself to be conquered already.
mtrueman, by the way, thinks child prostitution is okay because, in his own words, “Children are sexualized from conception.”
Shouldn't that be "Clumps of cells are sexualized from conception"?
I’m reminded of that Humpty Dumpty quote from Alice.
Well we finally got the answer to where Shits Creek is located.
Can't the river just "identify" as clean?
They're trying that right now. The river is fine, but others indulging in that delusion aren't.
The Seine just needs a better marketing campaign.
That's not "e coli," that's biodegradability in action!
It's like its own episode: Great Moment In Unintended Consequences- France Edition.
The problem: Inorganic nitrogen fertilizers are more carbon intensive than just waiting around for microbes to fix nitrogen.
The solution: Ban inorganic nitrogen fertilizers! Sounds like a great idea! With the best of intentions! What could possibly go wrong?
Turns out: There are other downstream effects of widespread organic fertilizer use.
The problem: The IOC is looking for a city to host its games and highlight on an international stage...
And not one word from Reason about the protests and riots in the UK? It gives the appearance of being on the edge of a civil war over there. And the jackass PM threw gasoline (petrol?) on the fire in his speech yesterday.
As a side note, I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen pictures of Irish republicans and Unionists standing side by side against a common foe.
And the jackass PM threw gasoline (petrol?) on the fire in his speech yesterday.
Nuh, uh!
/jeff
Sarc will rush in to say everyone is lying then claim he isnt defending the PM. Wait. We've seen this story.
As a side note, I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen pictures of Irish republicans and Unionists standing side by side against a common foe.
Systemic racism exposed.
When your country's leaders are being explicitly open and honest that they consider native citizens to be garbage to be cast aside as a sacrifice to their gods Exponential Cultural Enrichment and Diverse Street Food Options, eventually the people being targeted will push back if they haven't fully embraced white self-loathing, er, the "critical consciousness" needed to welcome being replaced by open border immigration.
The alleged suspect IS a native-born citizen, jackass. He was born in Britain to Rwandan immigrants.
Hey jackass, keep defending open borders.
It is more he continues to defend all the costs and crimes from his open borders like he did over the weekend.
Again his views align more closely with marxism than they do libertarianism.
https://www.marxist.com/why-marxists-oppose-immigration-controls.htm
Once again, the suspect is a BRITISH CITIZEN.
And he wouldn’t have been there if his parents were not allowed in without proper vetting first. Damn, you’re obtuse, Jeff.
His parents didn’t commit any crimes AFAIK. What kind of vetting would you like to see take place here against the parents?
The specific triggering event doesn't really mean that much. It does seem that the particular attack that set things off is more of a fucked up crazy person than someone motivated by religion or ideology (but I really don't know much).
I don't think anyone should be celebrating or approving of the violent responses. But I also think that to dismiss it as just a bunch of crazy and wrong right wingers being all racist and stuff misses the point. It should not be beyond the pale to suggest that maybe large influxes of immigrants that have big effects on the culture and makeup of a country might not be great for the native people already living there.
But I also think that to dismiss it as just a bunch of crazy and wrong right wingers being all racist and stuff misses the point.
How so? How is what's happening here, different in kind from, say, the 1921 Tulsa race riots?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulsa_race_massacre
In that case, a black guy was accused of assaulting a white woman. And in response there was a huge riot that led to the black part of the town burned to the ground.
So yeah, I do think it is unreasonable and bigoted for a mob of people to take out their frustrations against innocent people just because they all share the same skin color or even the same culture.
How is it same in kind to what happened in Tulsa, Chemjeff?
Collective guilt. Punishing innocent people for the crimes of an individual.
How are the innocent people in the UK being punished?
so you agree the reparations idea is stupid?
Look at the asylum seekers in the hotel in Rotherham who are being scapegoated and attacked by the mob because of what this one guy did.
“Look at the asylum seekers in the hotel in Rotherham who are being scapegoated and attacked by the mob because of what this one guy did.”
I have seen no reports of asylum seekers in a hotel in Rotherham “attacked” by a mob.
I have seen ample footage of a large demonstration outside a hotel, demanding it be shut down as a shelter for immigrants. That footage includes a brawl that occurred between two opposing groups of protestors. I have seen no indication that people inside the hotel were attacked.
Just to be clear, are you saying that mobs violently terrorizing a town, and burning it to the ground over night (as happened in Tulsa), is the SAME as what happened here? Really?
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/aug/04/rioters-try-to-torch-rotherham-asylum-seeker-hotel-amid-far-right-violence
That is more than just “protestors brawling”.
Also:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13703563/Riots-protesters-Sunderland-rallying-Liverpool-far-right-groups-fresh-wave-violence.html
And no I am not saying it is EXACTLY the same as Tulsa. I said that it is the same IN KIND. Meaning, one individual commits a crime, and an angry mob demands ‘justice’ from innocent people who have nothing to do with the crime, but who share some superficial demographic trait with the accused. It’s the same IDEA of collective punishment.
When a large part of your population is this angry about something, just dismissing them as a bunch of stupid idiots and wrong thinkers is not a good move. This isn't about the fuck who murdered little girls, it's years of frustrations coming to a head.
If you go read reports from the protests or media from pritestors a huge part of their issue is that the immigrant community is held yo a much lower criminal standard while getting extra government benefits. One of the big things today is them saying how during migrant riots nobody is arrested, cops protect the rioters, etc. Yet as soon as the long term citizens protests they are immediately arrested. This includes arresting those who want less immigration and saying it publicly.
If you go read reports from the protests or media from pritestors
One of the big things today is them saying
Maybe we should try to determine the facts of the matter instead of relying on one-sided anecdotes from the mob.
Given your "loose" interpretation of what is happening, I don't think you should be giving lectures, Chemjeff.
What have I said that is incorrect?
And how does what I'm saying affect the validity of relying on mob anecdotes for reliable data?
So primary sources of the protestors/rioters aren’t facts for why they’re protesting/rioting?
I know, let’s wait for the official narrative from the government. I bet that will be much more accurate and truthful.
The way you deal with an invading force is with compleat violance.
Pretending this is a one off example of negative externalities is Jeff's only intention with this argument. He even went as far as saying immigrants have a lower rate of crime than Chicago yo justify it.
The fact is immigrant groups bring a lot of crime and utilize wrlfare and social programs at higher rates than various countries citizens.
In Germany a report was issued last month that they make up 40% of government social program spending and were double the crime rate of its citizens.
Some of this is cultural, some of it is they are generally economically worse off. But the issues brought still exist.
Jeff's entire world view is to dismiss these issues while encouraging more of it.
I was out of the loop this weekend.
What did the prime minister say that inflamed everything? And what were the riots over? Did something just happen or is it just the British citizens anger reaching a boiling point?
Keir Starmer’s comments:
https://x.com/politlcsuk/status/1820122739040047552?s=46&t=qeA47-JjK6vq0pfnxg60dA
Suddenly, Jeff ascribes to the “Magic dirt” theory.
He’s always believed in it, for certain cases.
It is fascinating seeing major media outlets suppressing a major development in real life, by either ignoring it or pretending it is about something other than it actually is. The Reason writing staff tends comment on which is of interest to standard left-center leaning establishment media. If it is not being commented on there, then it does not exist.
It is stunning to see this all not covered by US media outlets that I’ve seen. If they do cover it, it’s a tiny picture and two-sentence blurb that follows the party line. I’ve been relying on X (Twitter) for the news, and it’s been showing a radically different picture.
Every MSM story I've read describes these people as right wing thugs. Meanwhile Elon is predicting civil war. If it comes to that it will be more than the UK. The entire EU is sitting on a domestic powder keg while inching ever closer to boots on the ground war with Russia. They're already planning conscription but they're going to be short on cannon fodder. If the Democrats manage to put Kamala in charge the shit is going to get very fucking ugly.
The west is doing a really effective job of alienating the very people they need to fight Russia and China if things really do go off the chain. They're importing so many third-worlders partly for that reason now, because they aren't sure the natives are going to enlist when that happens, and might even work specifically to have their regimes overthrown.
It's why any resistance to left-liberalism these days is called "far-right," while lack of resistance to left-liberalism is called "centrist."
Yep. Spike called them that as well. I was disappointed in them to say the least.
https://youtu.be/ojs39OXYKkY?si=KFsk98quwrmzeP3r
Spiked is perpetually kowtowing to the leftists. The only thing they're firm on is fighting trannies, but not without bending the knee to the matriarchy and general faggotry the way Robby "to be sures" here.
Fuck off, Buttplug, you dirty pedo, and quit socking as me.
Yeah the PM is promising a Covid style response. At least Ron Bailey will have something to write about.
More testing needed!
No, the PM is not promising a “Covid style response”. One stupid British Lord suggested that maybe it would be worth considering. But the PM didn’t, and it is not the position of the government.
When MTG says something stupid, do we consider her idiotic ramblings to be the official position of the Republican Party? No. Same deal here.
Why don’t you tend to those bears in your trunk?
I posted this in another thread that I mistook for the Roundup, but I’ll repost it here.
I don’t 100% agree with this analysis, primarily because the protesters aren’t ‘right-wing’ and they actually are the bulk of the public, but he’s right that the Chemjeff’s ruling the country are preparing a J6 committee style assault on the British people.
The British Right is about to get absolutely reamed.
We’ve seen this movie in America before, roughly four years ago. In that case it was one riot in one place, and basically everyone who participated had their lives ruined. That is going to happen tenfold in Britain. And Starmer is far more competent than Biden, younger than Biden, and was previously the UK equivalent of the Attorney General.
I get the grievances of the British right. But unless you are prepared to overthrow the government by force and install Farage as Franco (which I do not advocate, to be clear), the only long-term consequences of these riots will be the jailing and bankruptcy of those who participate, and a general delegitimization of right-wing, anti-immigration politics in Britain (which should be on the rise – Nigel’s an MP!)
Yes, you are second-class citizens in the country of your birth. That sucks. The only way is through.
These men owe it to their families not to engage in activism that *cannot work*
Decentralized right-wing riots *do not work*
The bulk of the British public will support Starmer, the rioters will have zero international support, they have no leadership, no clear demands, no purchase among elites, nothing other than righteous anger which is not enough
It’s like they read Luttwak’s Coup D’Etat: A Practical Handbook and did the opposite
So let's review:
A native-born British citizen attacks some schoolchildren.
The "British Right" responds by rioting and setting fire to a hotel in Rotherham that was housing asylum seekers. They did this because the suspect is black and was born to Rwandan immigrants, and were misinformed that he is an "illegal Muslim".
Tell me that the riots and violence shouldn't be condemned.
Tell me that the knee-jerk response from the "British Right" isn't just outright bigotry.
Yeah, the child sex trafficking that was overlooked in Rotherham for years was just “outright bigotry.”
But then, you want more child molesters to migrate here, so your sympathies are understandable.
What does that have to do with the current protests? These asylum seekers had nothing to do with the crimes of the past.
They're not really seeking asylum, they're just looking for a welfare state to sponge off of.
I see, so you’ve evaluated all of their individual claims and made a conclusion based on each one’s individual circumstances, right?
Or, you’ve made a broad brush generalization about ‘foreigners’ without knowing anything at all about their individual cases, right?
Sounds rather bigoted to me.
Goddamn, you’re a pedantic asshole.
Yes, I've evaluated all their original claims and found them to be unmitigated bullshit.
They have everything to do with the current protests, you myopic retarded shitstain. It’s been boiling for the better part of two fucking decades, you obtuse mid-witted moron.
The asylum seekers currently in the Rotherham hotel have NOTHING TO DO with any child sex scandal from a decade ago. Do you understand this?
“child sex scandal from a decade ago.”
Damn.
The kids were also probably drunk so it doesn't count. -jeff
It also continues in Britain. There was an article just a year or two agai regarding grooming by the same culture.
Yes, it’s an ongoing problem. But if you don’t have a problem with fucking kids like Lying Jeffy, it’s nbd.
Oh fuck you. Literally no one is justifying rape of girls.
Literally no one is justifying rape of girls.
Little boys are where the action is.
/pluggo.
Yes, the anger is misdirected. They should be setting fire to their political leaders.
Do you think it is fair to call it "bigoted" to attack innocent people for something that they had nothing to do with just because they shared the same skin color or culture as some guy who killed schoolchildren?
Sure, of course there is bigorty involved. There's also legitimate anger and frustration with government policies. You are missing the forest for the trees here. Sometimes things are understandable even if they aren't justifiable.
And by the way Zeb, do you see all the people around here who are trying to justify and rationalize violence being committed against innocent people just because they think it's "their team" or because they somehow think the asylum seekers share some collective cultural guilt for what this accused suspect did?
Look at Lying Jeffy go!
Except no one has justified it.
If you can’t see that tensions have been boiling under the surface for years (if not decades) due to the governments complete lack of care for what their citizens are saying, to the point that misinformation has led to rioting, I don’t know what to tell you.
(That’s an explanation btw, not a justification.)
I see maybe one or two arguably trying to justify it. But for the most part I see people here making the point that this was foreseeable and understandable given many years of simultaneous tolerance of misbehavior (often quite extreme) among immigrants and intolerance of working class Britons trying to defend and preserve their own culture (such as it is at this point).
You sure hate the proles, don't you. Tell us again how the hundreds of little girls raped by those gangs in Rotherham deserved it.
What do the asylum seekers in the hotel in Rotherham have to do with the child sex scandal of the past?
The "asylum" seekers are bring put up at that hotel at taxpayer expense, and likely share the same cultural religiously bigoted/racist view of ethnically English girls that led to the child sex ring scandals and would continue them.
How do you know this? Because they’re all dark skinned, therefore they all rape girls?
Because they all grew up in the same place, therefore they all rape girls? That is even assuming that they all grew up in the same place. You have no idea where any of these people came from, they are just "foreigners" and so therefore they're all rapey?
Lying Jeffy’s really fucking ignorant.
Because the in some areas the known members of the rape gangs compromised at least 30% of the local adult male Muslim population. Because the members of these gangs targeted ethnically English, at least nominally Christian, girls because they believe such deserve to be sex slaves to Muslim men.
Do you want to be judged on your individual circumstances and your individual merit, instead of being judged as a "white guy"? Then maybe you can start by affording the same courtesy to others.
We already are judged by the color of our skin.
Why shouldn't we return the favor?
Because it's wrong?
Do unto others.
You're fucked up, man. Yesterday you were advocating for mob 'justice' even against innocent people who did nothing wrong, today you advocate for racial segregation.
>>attacks some schoolchildren.
little girls were murdered, bro.
But they were white so it was ok. And doubly ok because they were at a Taylor Swift themed dance (Taylor Swift being the pinnacle of white supremist culture). - pedo jeffy.
Some people did some things.
Yes, they were. And it's terribly sad. And the police have arrested the suspect. He should face justice for what he did. But the asylum seekers in the hotel had nothing to do with what this murderer did.
my only comment was your obvious downplay.
But unless you are prepared to overthrow the government by force and install Farage as Franco (which I do not advocate, to be clear),
Why not? Franco was an effective traditionalist leader who neutered the left in Spain for 30 years.
Well, here’s a not insignificant reason why Francoism is a bad idea:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Terror_(Spain)
As a response to the similar mass killings of their clergy, religious, and laity during the Republican Red Terror,
The commies fucked around, and the commies found out. What's the problem?
Lying Jeffy always defends the left.
Your ignorance of the rise of Marxism is spectacular.
This entire sad story is about subordinating reality to narrative.
Narrative: An illegal Muslim killed schoolchildren, and the government is siding with the foreigners over its own citizens!
Reality: The suspect is a BRITISH CITIZEN, born to Rwandan immigrants in Wales. The rioters are attacking INNOCENT PEOPLE, asylum seekers, who had nothing at all to do with the crime.
How many business looted and burned durning the BLM riots had anything to do with George Floyd's death?
Rioting and setting fire to shit that isn’t yours is wrong.
Well good, someone else around here is wiling to condemn the rioting and the violence. Thank you for that.
I mean, everyone* here agrees with that so it doesn’t really need to be said…
Edit: *the commie kids and drive by redditors/facebookers we sometimes get don’t really count
"Reality: The suspect is a BRITISH CITIZEN, born to Rwandan immigrants"
Honestly, highlights the ever evident reality that not only do we need to limit and probably do away with quite a bit of the frivolous and overwhelming asylum claims that are resulting in de facto unchecked mass migration, we also need to be putting increased scrutiny in who can be a citizen (in everyone who has in interest in maintaining their country and its values)
If I go to try and live in Japan, I have to prove to them I am of value to their society and that I also value their culture and society. If I go try to move to a majority muslim theocratic state, you can damn well bet I am going to have to adopt a large amount of their values and ideals if I dont want to find myself afoul of the law (or dead).
Why is the west not allowed their own standards? Why is it we are expected to import the garbage of the 3rd world, ask nothing in exchange, and bend ourselves into knots to make them comfortable in the name of diversity and frankly what is just a massive case of the white saviorism / noble savage trope. Its starting to look like an organized suicide pact in the major cities.
Time to start considering who gets to be a citizen, or an asylum seeker, with significantly more scrutiny...like every other non western country does
If you took a class in queer theory and de-colonizing it would all make perfect sense.
In the case of Britain, there probably is some 'white saviorism' at work as a result of guilt from them being colonialist assholes for so long.
But from a libertarian perspective, the free movement of people is not 'white saviorism', it is a defense of individual liberty arising from freedom of association. If I wish to invite you onto my property, for whatever reason, why should any third party stand in the way and prevent that association from occurring? Any answer invariably results in subordinating the individuals' liberty to the demands of the 'collective', whether the collective be the government, the neighborhood, 'society', etc.
You are asking why we don't model ourselves after non-Western nations? Well, non-Western nations tend to be considerably less free than Western nations, not just politically but culturally as well. Asian societies tend to be stiflingly conformist. Islamic societies tend to be theocratic to the point of outright oppression. For instance homosexuality is illegal in not just most Muslim nations, but in about half of African nations as well. The 'crime' of homosexuality carries the death penalty in Uganda.
This is the inevitable result of societies that absolutely have some well-defined shared values, but regard deviation from those values as a heretical sin to the point of execution. If this is what you really want - a society that is so cohesive, people who disagree are shunned and exiled from the society up to and including execution - then just say so. Personally I would hate living in such a place.
Pedantic excuse after pedantic excuse. Jeffy, you say so much to say so little while evading the original question.
"If I wish to invite you onto my property, for whatever reason, why should any third party stand in the way and prevent that association from occurring?"
You inviting them on to your property permanently as your ward, that you will be responsible for, for better or worse? Or you inviting them onto your property tonight, to be released to work, not pay taxes, and suck up social services next week?
You cool if they live with you, and you pay their taxes (or be sure they do) for their stay? Sure, fine. Otherwise they are getting benefits far and above normal citizens and specifically above the current citizens that reside in the poor and lower middle class.
Lying Jeffy knows most of the people currently crossing the border haven’t been invited by anyone. He acts like that’s not the case because…he’s a liar.
"for whatever reason"
If my guest decides to do OTHER things that violate other people's liberties, then it's THOSE decisions that ought to be punished, not the mere act of coming here in the first place.
Your argument is tantamount to not letting anyone come into a bank, because they might rob it. That's a bullshit reason.
And, let's just be real clear here.
It may sound nice to have a society in which everyone has the same values, but at best, that is only a superficial pretense. In reality, EVERYONE deviates from what is considered socially normative behavior, in one way or another. In the past, people just either pretended those deviations didn't exist, or worse, made those deviations crimes (such as homosexuality, or drinking on Sundays).
You all complain about how you don't want "the gay agenda" being "shoved down your throat", when in reality, the 'shoving' is just evolving social standards that have drifted away from what you think it should be. So to be in polite society you have to pretend that gays aren't pedophiles and deviants even if you secretly do believe that they are. Now, imagine that the same social pressure that you feel about 'the gay agenda', is applied to every single facet of your life. Still think that having a 'cohesive, unified' culture sounds like a great idea? It's great for the stereotypical model citizen who checks all the right boxes, but that person is a myth and does not exist in reality.
Birmingham, England, Aug . 5 — Standing in front of the Village Islamic Centre, a man urges Muslims from all over the country to mobilize to the city for a direct action to counter white right-wing protesters.
No right-wing protest actually materialized yet but the armed group is occupying an area of the city streets.
@BrumPolice
don’t appear to be there.

Also:
we also need to be putting increased scrutiny in who can be a citizen (in everyone who has in interest in maintaining their country and its values)
Are you claiming here that the *parents* are being somehow 'unfaithful' to British values? If so, how?
Breaking: Brits in their cars are being attacked across Birmingham by Armed Muslims

Hey, Lying Jeffy can only get so hard. Give him a chance to cool down from the dead Swifties (It’s okay, he swears he felt bad after).
Also, that’s (D)ifferent, racist. They are only attacking people in cars. It’s not like they lit some Kleenex on fire.
Not a word anywhere about it. Back in 2020, it would have been shocking how hard this is getting censored. Now it's just business as usual.
No comments from our, “Oh, the economy is booming. Look at the employment and stock market figures.” Person.
RIG COUNT!
The official hype man for the Biden economy actually tried to convince us everything is wonderful because ......... the Wolverine & Deadpool bromance had a monster $211 million opening weekend.
I keep asking him which President deserves credit for Avengers: Endgame's record-obliterating $357 million opening but he refuses to answer. 🙁

By the way, the great Biden Bull Market ended this week. Bull market leader NVDA is being taken out and curb-stomped.

Watch and Learn, Peanuts.
Narrator: the Biden economy was never great.
You also spent all of 2022 raving about the Biden economy.
turd, the ass-wipe of the commentariat, lies; it’s all he ever does. turd is a kiddie diddler, and a pathological liar, entirely too stupid to remember which lies he posted even minutes ago, and also too stupid to understand we all know he’s a liar.
If anything he posts isn’t a lie, it’s totally accidental.

We all know you could only afford to risk 1.
Hey, asshole, you still want to address your previous homophobic comments about Tim Scott, you hicklib pederast racist?
How fast do you think the transition will be from "the sharpest, most capable economy in history" to "the economy was always in recession, from before Biden took office through today"?
It’s Trumps fault has been shrike’s talking point for years, why would it change now?
The Biden Economy is booming so well, that his senior economic advisor quit today:
https://twitter.com/WatcherGuru/status/1820466285874225578
And joined Kamalas team.
Heh. Turns out he’s not very smart.
He could be heard saying on the way out, "My work here is done".
Dme Rep is doing the sarc meme.
When asked why kamala is flip flopping:
Tom Elliott
@tomselliott
Rep.
@LaphonzaB
on what voters should think of
@KamalaHarris
reversing herself on every major issue: “Voters should think that she’s a human being who learns new things every single day”

Facts change!
And we changed them!
The media absolves Harris of positions she has.
The media assigns Trump positions he does not have.
Joornalism!
“Voters should think that she’s a human being who learns new things every single day”
Couldn't have been said more better by Kamala's speechwriter himself.
JD Vance is weird.

"Not being a whore is weird."
All politicians are whores. Of course everyone else is weird!
This was always my point regarding the “Weird” thing. The damning thing about this whole episode was what the left was admitting by making an issue of Vance. These blue-bubble statists actually think that venerating and respecting a family is weird. They have spent decades trying to cultivate the notion that anyone who idealizes the family must be a creepy, closet abuser. But the vast majority of the country does not think that. The vast majority does not think it is weird.
C'mon, man. Get with the times. Normal is the new weird.
It's the economy, stupid!
"After a spring with an abnormal amount of rainfall.....
Will the global warming induced drought ever let up!?
Until climate is static we will scream it is always abnormal. This is why people who don't understand statistics shouldn't talk about normalcy. Populations with high standard deviations can always appear "abnormal" to the mean. It is a meaningless adjective.
They can not agree of what the effects of global warming will be.
Whenever bad weather happens, it is global warming. This is due to too many white people having too many things. Don't worry, the politicians have a solution.
Whenever unusually extreme weather happens it is climate change. Whenever unusually mild weather happens, it is weather variations.
When it's mild is when they scare us with predictions of catastrophes to come. Will be the worst year for hurricanes ever! Will be the hottest/driest/wettest/snowiest/iciest year ever!
You still doubt global warming, even though a life-threatening tropical storm, bordering on a life-threatening Category 1 hurricane, as about to hit Florida? In August????
We were warned there would be hurricanes if we didn't ban gas appliances fast enough.

"I believe that with Trump, Israel will receive the backing to act against Iran," Ben-Gvir said in an interview published on Wednesday. "With Trump it will be clearer that enemies must be defeated."
I wonder if this is that fiscal brick wall many of us having been predicting. Mayne they can print enough money to paper it over.
Whatever it is, I hope it will scare politicians a little for some short term spending cuts, but I doubt it. The election is too far away for that kind of emergency actions.
Doubt is the correct stance as they seem to be working towards a rate cut to throw petrol onto the fire.
Whatever it is, I hope it will scare politicians a little for some short term spending cuts, but I doubt it. The election is too far away for that kind of emergency actions.
What? A recession is where you spend more.
That would be key to turning this around, a real keen move; temporary (until they get their money out of the market), targeted (to themselves), and timely (to get Kamala in office).
Can't risk austerity now! This thing is collapsing!
And when times are good, who needs austerity?

I remember when @KamalaHarris called to tell me about the Supreme Court’s decision on Dobbs. The first thing I thought about was my daughter. As a dad and as a husband, I’m going to do everything I can to speak out and help advance reproductive freedom.

OMG another progressive straight bro turns out to be a creep?
After Joss Whedon and Harvey Weinstein and Al Franken and Eliot Spitzer and Jeffrey Toobin and Andrew Cuomo and Bill Clinton and John Edwards I was positive there wouldn't be any more! 🙁
Allies!
I mean, to be fair to Al I don't think he actually deserves to be on that list. He stepped down because of the proximity to other Democrats being disgusting, and even though I don't particularly care for his politics I don't think he deserved the PoundMeToo treatment.
Eh, I guess what he did wasn’t as bad, but if that was my wife he did that to I’m still pounding his face in.
"The first thing I thought about was that we couldn't force red states to permit abortions up through the first five minutes of being extracted from the birthing person's womb."
Interesting that “reproductive freedom” doesn’t really involve any reproduction.
Yeah, but "hedonistic unconstrained sex without thought or consequences" does not poll as well.
And "gender affirming care" is an elective surgery to try to disaffirm your gender.
It aged better than his other clump of cells.
Oof. But fair.
I saw a video over the weekend, wherein some purple-haired portly woman was protesting in support of unrestricted abortion, 'My Body My Choice' and all, and a guy came up and asked her if she would support a pregnant woman drinking and doing drugs during her pregnancy, and her response was:
"Absolutely not"
Schrodinger's fetus.
"As a dad and as a husband."
These are qualifications of what exactly? Who talks like this?

The State Department gave $239 million to the Taliban.
Your tax dollars!
@ABlinken and @StateINL didn’t notice that the requesting NGO was fake - a front for the Taliban.
The DC media is largely silent because they protect Democrats.
How much did we 'give' them in the abandoned material and weapons, courtesy of Joe's fucked-up scram from Afghanistan?
Gotta hand it to the Taliban for figuring out how the DNC launders and grifts its money, and getting a nice $239 billion donation out of it.
Sorry, sharmutas, no refunds.
Ukraine's and Israel's response, “Heh, pocket change.”
Yeah, and Obama gave billions to Iran that turned around and gave the cash to terrorists that killed Americans. If billions didn't matter, a few hundred million certainly doesn't matter.

Nirvana's Nevermind was released 12,000 days ago. Its release date is closer chronologically to Fidel Castro taking control of Cuba than to today.
I love it when various generations begin to feel their age.
my little brother’s friends still say Nevermind changed the world but none can explain how.
The exact same way Yoko Ono changed the world.
well said.
It basically killed hair metal. Which is fine with me.
probably so ... other than Slaughter the genre was on the way out anyway would be the counter-argument lol
It got pedos like shrike to believe it was their time to come into the light.
yes because of the album cover ... took me a minute lol
=)
It changed my music world as a kid, and a lot of my classmates quit their can a day hairspray habit.
You probably needed hair on your balls and a job for it not to seem portentous.
I guess that describes my early 90s brother lol. I think Alice In Chains and Soundgarden were galaxies better.
Agreed. I still remember where I was when I got news that that the singers died. Can't say the same about Kurt.
I only remember it because it was announced on the closed-circuit school news channel that seemed to be a common feature of high schools back then (late Gen-X and early Millennial kids will know what “Channel One” means).
It wasn’t seen as a big deal at the high school I graduated from because most people listened to hip-hop or rap there, but I remember my friends at my old school in suburbia telling me that everyone was absolutely devastated by it. For them, Cobain was like their Jim Morrison.
I never heard of that, though I was a only few years ahead. I also missed DARE by a year or two. Was in CO at the time too.
I remember DARE kicking off when I was in sixth grade, although it may have started before then and they just didn't focus on the elementary schools. We used to be typical smart-ass kids and say it stood for "Drugs Are Reaching Everyone"
Kids used to go to school with shirts that said “DARE to think for yourself”. I was in a town that was more hippie than Boulder. The French teacher who wore Birkenstocks with socks would bum cigarettes off of us. One kid broke into the Spanish teacher's car and stole weed from the glove box. Good times.
I was in a town that was more hippie than Boulder.
Nederland?
I will neither confirm nor deny.
I haven’t thought of Channel One in ages. They used to play that during homeroom in junior high school.

Damn I miss Chris Cornell & Staley.
The only one lead singer left is the worst, Eddie Vedder. The chump survives.
Staley is the tops imho his voice hits my molecules. I'm still a little mad at Cornell for the self-murder job but the dude could blow the roof off a building.
I clearly remember the grunge explosion having an immediate effect on fashion sensibilities just within the span of a school year. Kids were already beginning to cut back on the big hair, ripped jeans, neon/day-glo aesthetics, and glam rock concert shirts, and pretty much everyone was in far more subdued fashions by the time junior year started in 1992, save for the stoner clique who was still wearing thrash metal shirts and mullets.
I have mixed feelings about the period. Think back to the videos of the time. On one hand you had G&R and Aerosmith putting out videos of preppy Alicia Silverstone in schoolgirl uniforms. On the other hand you had girls with black lipstick, frumpy flannel shirts and eyes permanently rolled back in their heads. I weep for that change.
That's what rap videos were for. And The Grind.
One thing I'll say in favor of musical pop culture in the 90s is that just about every genre you could think of had its moment in the sun. Pick the genre, and it probably had something blow up on the Billboard Hot 100 or Album charts at some point from 1990-1999. Radio in the 80s tended to grab on to 2 or 3 distinct genres, for 2-3 years at a time, and proceed to absolutely run them into the ground.
Even though I didn't like a lot of it at the time (I was one of those teenagers who was too cool to like anything that was popular whatever the genre), 90s popular music was pretty good and diverse like that.

Way to go leftard idiots.
If we adjust GDP for inflation haven't we already been in a recession for a while now?
Isn’t most of the GDP increase actually just the increased government spending? What are the numbers without that included.
It has been running quite a bit less than the deficit unless I'm really bad with numbers. We've been running deficits of $2T, which is ~8% of GDP to get 1-3% growth.
Federal tax revenues are approaching 5 trillion dollars per year (4.976 trillion).
Which means the budget would be balanced already if spending had been frozen in 2019.
What is so hard about freezing spending?
Hey. At least the fighters for 15 won, right? They won 15 hours a day after working two jobs.

saw a medical show or an I Survived or something where a chick caught dengue from one small splash of a Thailand riverboat ride
I thought you could only get dengue from mosquitoes?
I checked with mme. dillinger & she remembers dengue too ... obviously we both could be wrong lol
Was she naked?
Some evidence suggests that dengue can be spread through sexual contact.

there's a mme. dillinger or the dengue chick? joke here but seriously it was like a few droplets of river water spray in her face the whole medical mystery surrounded the contraction

If I had to make up an even more euphemistic and less credible version of The Tractor Story, "The Thai Riverboat Ride Story" would probably be it.

I'm not going to worry about the stock market "crash."
I'm only going to start worrying about the stock market is when the government tries "to do something" like Hoover and FDR did.
You mean something like inflate the money supply, hand out trillions in cash, spend trillions they don't have (and then spend trillions servicing the debt, and attempt even more aggressive levels of income and wealth redistribution?
Per tabloid reporting, which was partially confirmed by the campaign, Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, had an affair during his first marriage (not to Harris). The woman he had an affair with allegedly became pregnant and did not keep the baby, though the campaign has not acknowledged or confirmed that part.
How can you write that blurb and not use the word "nanny"? That's, like, the key fact.
Inseine in the membrane.
If you think about it, “swimming in shit” is an apt metaphor for our times.
