Win for Writers Guild, Loss for AI

WGA and SAG-AFTRA picketing | Richard B. Levine/Newscom
(Richard B. Levine/Newscom)

Fran Drescher holds Hollywood hostage: On Sunday night, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) reached a tentative deal with studios and streaming platforms, likely ending the 146-day strike that has brought new TV and movies to a halt. The WGA has won many concessions, like an increased rate for residuals—payments provided when a show is re-aired or, nowadays, placed on a streaming platform—and regulations on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the writing process. But unless the actors union, SAG-AFTRA, also reaches a deal (negotiations are being helmed by Fran Drescher, star of The Nanny and apparently a formidable negotiator), Hollywood will continue to be roiled by strikes.

Over the next few days, nearly 12,000 WGA members will vote on the deal, which includes minimum staffing requirements for writers rooms, higher compensation for residuals, and limits on the use of AI-written scripts. If the 2007 strike previewed issues that arose from the shift to streaming, the 2023 strike can be considered a preview of threats presented by AI.

"Whether the union can secure its A.I. moratorium or not, ChatGPT and its kin are likely to change the industry in some way—if not wholly replacing writers then becoming subsidiary to them, to be used as a tool for generating ideas or sketching out a first draft," I wrote back in May. "You think Hollywood feels samey now? Wait until it's just the same 100 people rewriting ChatGPT," the screenwriter C. Robert Cargill told me then.

Per The New York Times, "more than 100,000 behind-the-scenes workers—including directors, camera operators, publicists, makeup artists, prop makers, set dressers, lighting technicians, hairstylists and cinematographers—in Los Angeles and New York will continue to stand idle," so pressure remains high on SAG-AFTRA to also secure a deal.

Unfortunately, the worst news is not the AI regulation or the minimum staffing requirements, which prevent entertainment companies from nimbly adapting to new technology that might prove useful; it's the fact that John Oliver and Seth Meyers may soon return to the airwaves.

The debate stage is but a sideshow: On Tuesday, President Joe Biden will "join the picket line and stand in solidarity with the men and women of" United Auto Workers (UAW)—who demand a 40 percent wage increase over four years, pension plan expansions, and a 32-hour, four-day workweek from the Big Three automakers. Former President Donald Trump, who is the current Republican presidential front-runner, announced a Detroit trip right before Biden did. Trump will be speaking to union members on Wednesday, in lieu of showing up on the Republican debate stage. "Every fiber of our union is being poured into fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of workers," said UAW President Shawn Fain. "The autoworkers are being sold down the river by their leadership, and their leadership should endorse Trump," countered the man himself on Meet the Press.

IRS goes back on promises: Remember when the nation's tax collectors promised they wouldn't increase the audit rate for people making less than $400,000 annually? (How did that work out in 2022?) This was a critical part of the fight over the $80 billion infusion of cash the IRS received as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. But now, quoting from a Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) report, Reason's J.D. Tuccille explains that "the IRS's current default definition of high-income taxpayers is $200,000 and above" and that it doesn't intend to tweak it.

"The IRS does not have a unified or updated definition for individual high-income taxpayers," said TIGTA on August 31. "The current examination coding scheme uses $200,000 as a main threshold even though it is no longer a reasonable standard for high earners given inflation since 2005."

"The report recommends the definition of 'high-income' be revised," writes Tuccille, "so that the term means the same thing to IRS agents as it does in press releases from the Department of the Treasury and the White House." Amazingly, the IRS said no to TIGTA's request for revision; doing so would somehow "deprive the IRS of the agility to address emerging issues and trends." (Note that this is the same agency that was required by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen back in February to submit a report detailing how it would spend its new $80 billion, which it failed to do until 48 days after the deadline.)

So it looks like all those who 'learned to code' can't figure out how to change a fixed value of 200,000 to 400,000.

      1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 years ago

In the 21st century work is optional. And racist.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago (edited)

The staffing minimums are going to be the worst part of it, because you’ll have a bunch of mentally ill basketcases using the writers’ rooms as paid therapy sessions. None of this is actually going to make Hollywood content any better, and they still haven’t confronted the fact that they’ve pissed off so many people with their political sperging the last few years that they’ll continue losing money on their shit productions.

With that said, we should probably be grateful that our enemies don't appear to have learned their lesson.

      1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

The staffing minimums are going to be the worst part of it, because you’ll have a bunch of mentally ill basketcases using the writers’ rooms as paid therapy sessions.

C'mon, I've seen a couple of recent shows. That's exactly what they already were, just now they'll be more so. There's way too much entertainment that's just the writers bitching about whatever made them angry last week and trying to pretend it's a plot.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

Yeah, I should have qualified that this was happening already, it's just going to be magnified with more of these mentally ill freaks in the room.

        2. MasterThief   2 years ago

That's South Park in a nutshell. It works for them because actually criticize social fads and political bs. Most media serves as propaganda for the establishment.
As for the writer's guild... why would I miss them? Almost everything I've watched the last few years has had the same senseless writing I'd expect from chatgpt. Nothing builds to a satisfying ending. Characters don't behave in logical or even contextually understandable ways. So many details both large and small are too far out of line with reality to suspend disbelief. If there are human writers, then they lack real world knowledge and have no understanding of people.

Seen more and more on AITA Reddit and similar outlets. "She might be neurodivergent..." or "He might be on the spectrum..." is the go-to claim from people determined to defend bitchiness and douchebag behaviours.

    3. CE   2 years ago (edited)

I suspect AI is going to win in the end, either way. Hollywood studios may have an ideological agenda, but movies are financed by investors who at least expect to make their money back, preferably with some profit.

Instead of progressive activist writers turning out more ham-handed movies to try to indoctrinate the masses, AI could review all the movies ever written, cross-reference that to box office returns and critical acclaim, and write movies that people actually want to watch.

      1. CE   2 years ago

And the first such AI penned movie might be called "Rio Dino" --
John Wayne lands on an alien planet run by intelligent dinosaurs, rescues Raquel Welch, and rides off into the sunset, until he see the Statue of Liberty half-buried on the beach.

    3. Zeb   2 years ago

But "feedforward" actually means something and it's not the same as feedback. Since when is feedback a negative thing?

      1. DesigNate   2 years ago

Since any kind of criticism hurts these pussies fee fees?

        1. Stuck in California   2 years ago

What happened was that you couldn't say something "critical," even if respectful and warranted.

So they took the idea of feedback, which is letting an employee know how they did -- good bad or otherwise -- and instead of regular guidance they'd just say that word for everything bad. I was working in a big corporation where it morphed and saw it happen. "I have some feedback" became "I'm going to shit on your work for a while."

That's what happens with peter principled middle managers. Always. Changing the methodology doesn't work, because they'll instead do the same thing using a different word. Feedforward will now be the word for "I'm going to shit all over the work you did" and make people unhappy.

ya, and the commentariat in general enjoying her style of libertarianism, giving her kudos, really ruins their narrative that everyone comes here to bitch about Reason no matter what.

Nope, nobody making any critical remarks about Liz Wolfe at all:

        https://reason.com/2023/09/20/5-dissenters-in-the-house/?comments=true#comment-10242797

A Thinking Mind: "Erm…okay. Alcohol and marijuana are pretty destigmatized, but admitting you work when you’re buzzed or stoned isn’t really laudable."

And a generally more positive response to Liz Wolfe than ENB in no way explains all the bashing of Jacob Sullum, for example. Sullum, who writes quite dispassionate, fact-filled updates on Trump's legal problems is continually accused of having TDS.

"Nope, nobody making any critical remarks about Liz Wolfe at all:"

Liarson Maneuver. There was never a claim made that "nobody [is] making any critical remarks". The claim was that Mike, et al constantly bitch that commenters *only* come here to complain about Reason. Whether or not someone has been critical of Liz (and that is a pretty milquetoast criticism) is irrelevant to that argument.

But this is Mike's standard MO: try and take the argument in some tangent.

Sullum is as balanced and subtle as Rob Reiner when it comes to Trump.

She *had* to buy a Tesla because of COVID, or something like that.
          ---------------------
What happened next was nothing short of stunning, as the New York congresswoman claimed that the reason she couldn’t get rid of her Tesla, despite claiming she was ready to do so well over a year ago, is because there was no COVID-19 vaccine.

“Er no look our car was purchased during the pandemic when travel, mass, before a vaccine had come out so travel between New York and Washington the safest way we had determined was an EV,” she said.

Aside from being one of the flat-out dumbest things ever said by a public figure who should already be enshrined in the Hall of Fame of dumb public figures, AOC is lying about why she kept her non-union-made Tesla.

Was she worried about going to a car dealership and getting sick? Doesn’t the vaccine work, AOC? Maybe she just didn’t want to drive to the union-made EV dealership alone, with her mask on in the car.

Ocasio-Cortez’s response earned a hefty dose of mockery on social media.

“Oh, yes, I too decide the make and model of my vehicle based on the availability of Covid vaccines,” chided political commentator Tomi Lahren.

I know you GOP dumbasses won't understand this but there is something called "objective data".

For instance GDP, unemployment rate, and jobs added are all objective statistics that measure the economy and all are much better now than when the Con Man was president.

            Here is an example:

            https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/GDP/

It is called a "chart" and it measures economic growth over time.

            1. Sandra (formerly OBL)   2 years ago

Scott targets 2024 rivals on issue of abortion in new ad
    .
Scott last week, for instance, called out Trump, DeSantis and Haley by name during an interview with Fox News, saying they “have all run away from protecting life.” He also took a jab at Ramaswamy over his foreign policy views on Taiwan and Israel last week.
    .
The ad is also noteworthy given Republican presidential candidates’ campaigns have largely avoided wading into the issue of abortion through ad campaigns, though some candidates have spoken about the issue during campaign stops and events.

They call themselves “progressives” and “anti-racists”, they called Georgia’s updated voting laws Jim Crow 2.0.

In reality, they are base human beings, simply filled with venom and racist vitriol to be turned on anyone with whom they disagree.

Here’s a smattering of things that MSNC hosts, Washington Post and The Nation writers, and other candidates for office have said about Herschel Walker, who is running for a Senate seat to represent Georgia (against incumbent Raphael Warnock).

Imagine for one second if Fox News or the WSJ had written these statements about Mr. Warnock.

“Herschel Walker’s candidacy is a white insult to Black people.”

“Walker is what they think of us, and they think we’re big, ignorant, and easily manipulated. They think we’re shady or criminal. They think we’re tools to be used. The Walker campaign exists as a political minstrel show: a splashy rendition of what white Republicans think Black people look and sound like.”

“I make a hard distinction between Black conservatives and these tokens” – referring to Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) and Walker – “who are out here right now, shucking and jiving for their white handlers.”

“Walker has positioned himself into being a useful fool for those who don’t have the best interests of Black people or this democracy at heart.”

“[Herschel Walker’s] irrelevant to the Black community, and we should treat him as such.”

“Herschel Walker, the football star turned Georgia Senate candidate, is an animated caricature of a Black person drawn by white conservatives.”

“Most white people in the South vote ‘R’ like their entire white supremacist project depends on it.”

“Georgia Republicans want Walker because he’s Black and Warnock is Black, and they think they can defeat Warnock in November if they can shave just a little of the Black vote…”

“Mr. Walker was merely a vessel for the G.O.P. and Mr. Trump’s ambitions.”

“He’s a puppet on a string, and somebody’s pulling those strings really good.”

[from back before the last election]

Not to be outdone in using racist attacks against blacks, the Democrats seem intent on racist attacks on Hispanics, too.

Democratic lawmakers and liberal media outlets alike have responded to the Republican Party's gains with Latino voters by attacking Hispanic Republicans. Flores's opponent in November, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D., Texas), argued in June that he is more qualified than Flores because he "wasn't born in Mexico." Weeks later, Arizona representative Rubén Gallego (D.) said a female Hispanic Republican running for Congress in the state was not sufficiently Latina because she took her husband's last name.

The New York Times, meanwhile, said Flores's win marked the "Rise of the Far-Right Latina," citing the Republican's support for religiosity, strong borders, and traditional values. A Texas political blog that has received campaign funds from Gonzalez also attacked Flores last month, referring to the congresswoman as "Miss Frijoles," "Miss Enchiladas," and a "cotton pickin' liar."

"Who does this Mayra Flores think she is? Somebody said she was crowned Miss Frijoles 2022 in San Benito," Texas political blogger Jerry McHale, who has received $1,200 from Gonzalez's campaign, wrote on July 2. "She isn't in congressman Vicente Gonzalez's league. She isn't even in the bush leagues unless she doesn't shave her p**sy."

OK, I actually bothered to log out my account so I could see all the muted comments involved in this thread that supposedly presents solid proof.

It’s just a bunch of commenters who I have muted because they are known liars, and specifically liars about other people here, making accusations with handwavy evidence like “go look on this date in the Wayback Machine.”

One of the main witnesses one is supposed to believe is ... freegin' Tulpa? Come on, man, get serious.

And then this “moneyshot”, who is supposed to be the same person as SPB2, makes a vague statement about Reason IT, and there is HEAVY interpretation of what he meant by that.

In short, it’s all a load of bullshit, and every time you bring it up you out yourself as a bulllshitter.

          Listen brother Mike.

As a general rule on the internet, you don't defend certain people. A couple examples we have here are Misek, a strormfront holocaust denier, and SPBP(2), a child porn enthusiast.

Have some standards on who you #WhiteKnight for, brother

          1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

OK, so present some solid evidence that SPBP2 posted kiddy porn. Evidence that is higher quality than what Alphabet Soup keeps repeating. Otherwise, this is just another case of the Reason Commentariat Mean Girls outing themselves as lying bullies.

            3. Square = Circle   2 years ago

OK, so present some solid evidence that SPBP2 posted kiddy porn.

The link was removed, along with all the comments by his old handle, but he absolutely did do it. He also admitted that "moneyshot" was him.

In fairness, he posted the link by way of demonstrating that it's very easy to find child porn on line and that bans on child porn are ineffective. How he knew how to find child porn so easily is a question that can be left to the reader's speculation.

              1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Thank you for a more honest summary. Sincerely.

It tells me a couple things about Alphabet Soup's repeated postings: (a) you've confirmed that there is no evidence in the thread he keeps linking to; (b) isn't it interesting that he leaves out the detail "he posted the link by way of demonstrating that it’s very easy to find child porn on line", and instead often calls SPBP2 a pedophile.

You'll have to excuse me, though, if I don't believe that "he absolutely did do it" based solely on your word, with no evidence presented.

                1. Square = Circle   2 years ago

you’ve confirmed that there is no evidence in the thread he keeps linking to

I also confirmed that SPB did, in fact, post a link to child porn and pointed out that you're not going to see the link itself because it's one of very, very, very few posts that Reason actually removed and then banned the poster for. I can think of exactly one other person that's happened to in fifteen+ years of being around here.

Given that Misek the Holocaust denier posts here regularly, stop to think for a moment what a comment might have to do to get not only the comment removed but their handle actually retired and scrubbed from the site.

What SPB did is routinely misrepresented, yes, but I don't defend him despite knowing what he was actually trying to do because he's also consistently dishonest and belligerent on top of being one of the most openly racist, misogynist and homophobic people on this board. So sure, maybe he's not provably a pedophile, but he's still garbage not worth casting your lot in with.

“Anton Lazzaro was described by prosecutors as ‘Minneapolis's Jeffrey Epstein' as he was accused of preying on 'broken' young girls, plying them with Everclear liquor and paying tens of thousands of dollars after having sex with them.”

Scroll down for the photos of the guy with both Trump and Pence.

It’s almost like this kind of thing happens in both major parties.

Yes, Mike "Liarson Maneuver" Laursen thinks I am a known liar. Also Irony is Ironic.

One thing that I have enjoyed in my break from these comments is coming in periodically to see how pointless Mike's little temper tantrums really are.

While Mike has bitched and moaned about people being mean to his leftist cronies, in the end he is losing the war. I don't know if the constant criticism of Reason's Editors has been causing the change, but the magazine has clearly shaken things up behind the scenes. The old guard of Blue Bubble authors is more frequently interspersed with other authors. And it isn't just that Wolfe's perspective is refreshing, it's that her content isn't just a lazy rehash of the latest Blue Check Twitteratti narratives that ENB harvested from her daily feed.

If KMW announces her departure/reassignment by December, I'll become a Torch Bearer again, and Mike's failure as a White Knight will be transparently obvious. As much as I enjoy Reason's decision to post articles from authors who don't instinctively sneer at half the Libertarian Party and anyone to the right of Nancy Pelosi, the real problem continues to be their Editing. Fixing that will likely break Mike, and potentially save this magazine from oblivion.

“If the radical Left wins, abortions will be performed on minors without their parent’s consent. Babies old enough to feel pain will be aborted. And poor single mothers like mine, will be told aborting their children would help the economy,” Scott says in a 30-second ad that will air on Newsmax starting on Monday.

He's not wrong. Look at California, look at Illinois.

Virginia Republicans last week also launched an ad ahead of the November state legislative elections hitting Democrats over their abortion stance, arguing they favor no limits to the medical procedure.

And if you have any doubt as to what Democrats want...

      https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/state-legislator-defeats-incumbent-senator-virginia-race-centered-100260586

All of these recent events in Hollywood have the fingerprint of a stodgy old industry which will end up being disrupted by new sources of entertainment they don’t understand and will see as having come “from nowhere”. It’s going to be like the Detroit auto makers and Japanese compact cars.

Not sure if it’s what you were getting at, but my personal take is I’d be perfectly happy if Hollywood never created another piece of entertainment.

I know lots of people who feel obligated to see every movie and TV show that comes out, and I am definitely not that person. It would take way more of my precious time to watch the movie and TV shows already out there (even only the best of them) than I want to give up.

And I’m a child of the Sixties, I already spent too much of my time in front of the boob tube just during my childhood. I have way too many brain cells already dedicated to memories of The Munsters and Gilligan’s Island.

What I'm getting it is that the amount of content produced has roughly tripled over the last 10 or so years. It's far, far, far too much to produce good content. They need far fewer shows, far fewer writers, far fewer actors, far fewer...everything.

Streaming is not a viable business model. You will not make money producing new content for streaming services. So, some blood-letting has to happen.

Pregnant people should get an RSV vaccine at 32 to 36 weeks’ gestation in order to protect their newborns from RSV, according to a CDC advisory committee.

All their Covid advice was spot on, why wouldn’t you trust them this time? Just because we never told pregnant women to inject anything before…..

'....nearly 12,000 WGA members'...' I wonder what the turn over rate is for that group, i.e. writer to bartender, bartender to writer? It's seems only about 50% of them make a living writing in a given year.

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

That's the whole point of the staffing minimums in the writers' rooms. Everyone knows the supply VASTLY outstrips the demand, which is why they were trying to crowbar more dumbass writers in the rooms.

      1. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

The mandatory minimums they are asking for would be a HUGE win for them, and loss for everyone else. It would absolutely solidify their ability to put out hack work and get paid for it.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

The irony is that they think this is going to be some kind of long-term win for the writers, but the financial reality is that the money is drying up, and the crap they inevitably put out is going to continue losing billions of dollars. So in about 3 years when the contract runs out, they're going to be right back where they started, and AI will end up being used more often anyway.

          1. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

Ya, how much money does one make off residuals for a 300 million dollar movie, that spends 100 million in marketing, then makes 200 million at the box office (which is split in half for the studio)...and then goes on to a streaming service where nobody watches it.

I think that portion at least is going to be a very rude awakening for them. The studios aren't sharing their streaming numbers (and a lot of box office data, if possible) because they dont want their shareholders to know how truly fucked they are. The writers are assuming they are hiding a pot of gold, but that's not what's in the pot...

Before Trump, conservatives were anti-tax. Now they want to slap tariffs on everything.

              1. JesseAz   2 years ago (edited)

Ahh. Youre still retarded enough to believe that work, welfare, and taxes aren’t intrinsically linked.

Youre a simpleton sarc. You rely on simplistic bumper stickers because you are incapable of actual thought or analysis of a situation. Your “ideas” fall apart once any form of reality manifests itself.

Tell me. What happens when citizens are displaced by foreign low wage workers. Does it have any effect on welfare government spending?

                1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

I try to take complicated problems and break them down into their component parts because that makes them easier to solve. You call that being simplistic.

You take simple problems and make them unnecessarily complex in order to obfuscate and appear smart, when in reality you're just not very bright.

                  1. JesseAz   2 years ago (edited)

You try to ignore anything past a 1st order bumper sticker because you are incapable of complex thought past a bumper sticker. You will refuse and attack any attempt to discuss an issue past a nonsensical view of the world. As you are doing here.

                    Youre a simpleton.

Did you even read the link I gave you the other day from Hoppe? My guess is no, but you’ll claim you did, disagreed, but won’t have a substantive argument against any point made.

Because once again youre a fucking simpleton.

You can’t break down a complex situation into component parts unless the parts are independent. When they are interconnected it is not possible. Basic algebra versus multi variate or linear algebra.

So I repeat. Youre a sophomoric simpleton.

Notice how you won't even answer the simple question I asked.

                    1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Note. You still didn’t answer the simple question. And it is an easy one.

You must be shit as a 2nd level help desk sarc.

Sarc: no. Stop making the situation complicated. Separate the two things. The OS update works.

Employee: not with the tool required for my job.

      1. Zeb   2 years ago

Well, can't end the drug war with the stupid approach they tried. I'd like to see what happens when drugs are legalized and other laws against property and violent crime are vigorously enforced. Legalization is going to be a mess if it doesn't come with increased expectations of personal responsibility.

        1. mad.casual   2 years ago

So, it turns out that siding with the hip-swiveling "tear it all down" anarchists because they were pro-drugs wasn't the panacea advertised, huh? That drugs can be legalized but we're still going to have to recognize, protect, and enforce ideas like non-violence, property rights, and personal responsibility... as long as we all agree that it's not because those icky, right-wing, wrecker-kulaks said we had to.

          1. Roberta   2 years ago

This is the problem: the quantitative theory of government. It's like we have only one control knob at society's disposal: more oppression or more permissiveness. Either we allow people to do more of anything, or less, without much discrimination.

The only polities in which it seems there's effective sentiment for abolishing or even easing up on victimless crimes (chiefly sex and drugs) are those motivated by easing up on law and order, period. Or worse, by wanting to overturn respectable society — épater les bourgeois, reverse the relationship between oppressor and oppressed.

I wish there were some clear way out of this rut that it seems we can tread only back and forth in.

            1. Gaear Grimsrud   2 years ago

            2. Foo_dd   2 years ago

there is some of that in much that happens today. the specific problem with the drug war is that the part they are trying to turn the knob on is not the source of the problems. the biggest problems caused by prohibition are not on the demand side, they are on the supply side.

            3. Terran   2 years ago

I'll point out that they never tried to end the drug war. This was decriminalization of drug use/possession. Without a legal market this is a predictable outcome.

        1. Roberta   2 years ago

          Similarly with the sex war.

          1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   2 years ago (edited)

Ouch… don’t whisper that into ENB’s favorite sex-worker-cum-podcaster’s ear. Because she explicitly favors decriminalization over legalization.

        2. Foo_dd   2 years ago

that is the big problem. and the lack of a legal market is where all the problems have always originated for every attempt at prohibition of anything people still want.

decriminalization is a half assed version of legalization. you keep all the problems with prohibition, but keep some of the victims out of jail.

You’ve had 3 years to tell Babbitt parents she deserved to be shot. DC police even arrested the mother twice.

Shooting is a bit worse no?

        2. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

id tell them that when you are in a brawl, you have all kind of risks including but not limited to being:

          Beaten
          Stabbed
          Shot
          Stomped

Did fuck around, find out, not make sense to you?

Anyways, I guess my point is I dont care to hear the whinging from you specifically regarding police brutality and overreach. You have basically said Babbitt got what she had coming for protesting the govt without committing violence or being armed. So I dont much give a shit about your thoughts on the matter, you've proven to be mentally compromised (TDS is a helluva drug, afterall).

Someone more credible could complain about it, to which I would say the cop shouldn't have acted that way, but thats what you risk jumping into a group brawl.

          1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

You have basically said Babbitt got what she had coming for protesting the govt without committing violence or being armed.

I won't bother clarifying what I actually said because you appear to be heavily emotionally invested in believing the narrative spun by liars like JA and ML.

Ooh. Need links showing you mocking her?

          2. Mike Laursen   2 years ago (edited)

“ TDS is a helluva drug, afterall”

I thought January 6th was just a bunch of citizens expressing their concern about election fraud and didn’t really have anything to do with Trump per se. I’ve been told that several times.

So, how would TDS enter into this.

            1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago (edited)

You might understand if you actually read sarcasmic’s comments and the responses to his comments instead of just white knighting them blindly.

Of course, you're "Mr. Assault Fire Extinguisher", so what am I saying?

              1. Terran   2 years ago

Looks like you're saying "TDS is a helluva a drug." Obviously Mike did a little too much?

      4. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

You know that Ashli Babbitt was not armed, ex post facto. Please explain how the Capitol police officers could know that she and the mob with her were not armed at the time it was all going down.

        1. Dillinger   2 years ago

they were the only ones pointing guns.

          1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

So? How did the cops know someone in that mob didn’t have a concealed weapon they were going to whip out at any second?

            1. Zeb   2 years ago

Are you fucking kidding me? You can say that about literally any situation. That would justify police to start shooting any time a crowd looks like it might get aggressive.
It's pretty simple. Don't use deadly force unless you have identified an actual threat.

              1. Sevo   2 years ago

But then how could that steaming pile of lefty shit justify the murder of Ashley Babbit?

              2. JesseAz   2 years ago

Reminder. Sarc and Mike were apoplectic about cops in Seattle using an unmarked van to arrest violent protestors.

                She had two arms!!!!!

            2. Dillinger   2 years ago

shooting Ms. Babbitt was not the way to ascertain who was armed.

              1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Nor did I imply it was.

The police officer’s job was to stop the mob breaking through the barricades doors, not to ascertain what weapons the mob possessed.

                    1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Whatever, Bro. Make excuses for the January 6th rioters. Sure, buddy, they were the innocent victims just wandering around behind the velvet ropes doing nothing more than taking selfies.

        2. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

You're right, police should have mowed down the whole crowd, just to be safe.

Next BLM riots are going to get pretty messy with this precedent though. Something something unintended consequences

          1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Cops picking up teenage girls and dropping them on their heads is ok because Babbitt. J6 was ok because BLM. Any other terrible things to justify because of some unrelated thing done by someone you don't like?

          2. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Let’s see. A violent mob was forcing its way through the barricaded entrance of the Speaker’s Lobby with apparent intent to harm the Vice President, members of Congress, their staff and guests, and to disrupt a Constitutionally-mandated process required to transfer power from one Presidential administration to the next, which won the election fair and square.

Yes, the Capitol police would have been justified in shooting even more of the rioters.

Police would have been justified in shooting many of the “BLM” rioters, too.

            1. Zeb   2 years ago

Go find the video of what actually happened. The shooting made no sense at all and was not justified.

            2. JesseAz   2 years ago (edited)

Define violent mob and why the BLM riots weren’t… yet you were raging about unmarked vans in arrests.

I would tell you videos exist but you won't watch them.

You and sarc even mocked Trump being forced into the WH bunker...

Win for Writers Guild, Loss for AI

I doubt it's a "win for writer's guild": they are just speeding up the downfall of their industry. AI might actually have been able to improve their crappy scripts.

    AI “isn’t writing—it’s scraping other people’s work... it's a plagiarizing machine."

Whatever you call it, a good start for high quality AI-based scripts would be to exclude all screenwriting of the last couple of decades.

    1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

LOL, some commenter on another board actually citied "Foundation," "Westworld," Game of Thrones," and "His Dark Materials" as supposed evidence of the Hollywood's profound artistic and economic value.

Yeah, a couple of shows that no one outside of the industry and their shill media mouthpieces actually a gives a damn about, one show that spiraled into complete shit after one season, and another that spiraled into complete shit after it outran the source material that its fat fuck author abandoned.

"LOL, some commenter on another board actually citied... “His Dark Materials” as supposed evidence of the Hollywood’s profound artistic and economic value."

That had to have been encog, right?

      2. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

        "” Game of Thrones,”

Oof. Probably the most clear example of Hollywood's ineptitude. I wonder if they were "The Last Jedi" fans too...

When HBO was adapting GOT straight (or nearly completely) from GRRM it was beloved and a cultural phenomenon. Very shortly after they ran out of book and the Hollywood writers/producers got some leash, they did the on screen equivalent of shitting their pants, slipping in it, and landing on their head breaking their neck. It instantly was riddled with contrived writing, plot holes, and ridiculous (often paradoxical) character behavior that was so egregiously bad it was met with universal scorn.

GOT is a showcase of how truly terrible Hollywood writers and producers have become, and how they cant actually create anything good or original themselves.

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

GoT is almost a microcosm of the decline of the modern west. You have a relatively creative storyline based on medieval European conflicts, with some high fantasy elements thrown in, that becomes a genuine cultural phenomenon, only to slowly decline and eventually crash altogether when its creator becomes too indulgent to manage his creation, and his successors don't have the tools to maintain the solid foundation that he crafted, which results in its total collapse into an irrelevant joke.

      3. One-Punch_Man   2 years ago

1st season of Westworld was good. 2nd season ok. 3rd - can't tell because after ep 2 I said that's enough.

Game of Thrones - I never watched. What I understand, the eps based on the books were great. The ones Hollywood created like the ending were worse than turds

        1. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

Westworld's main problem is that it was another vehicle for JJ Abrams' stupid "mystery box" fetish. Once it got past season one, any reason to really give a shit deteriorated pretty fast, because Abrams is fucking incompetent at providing any real payoff. If he was a porn director, the film would cut off before the money shot.

        2. JesseAz   2 years ago

The books started sucking after book 3 anyways.

Eh- I'm not concerned about the 'loss for AI'. AI writing is deadly dull. If we can stave it off for a little while, all the better. Since it reduces costs, it will win in the end. Get ready for every news article everywhere to start sounding the same. AI novels are next.
Of course anything that's a faceplant for those nasty liberal arts people is a win, right? They probably got degrees at woke places. AI overlords can only be better. Start being really polite to your ChatGPT engine.

My friends in creative professions love to play with AI. They don't see it as a risk to them; AI is not creative enough to come up with good ideas (not LLMs at least). It's a risk to highly compensated mediocre talent looking to shirk making good on deliverables and to make them timely.

No wonder the writers guild is shitting its collective pants over the prospect.

      1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

Yeah, I was surprised that neither of the two artists I know personally feel threated by AI-generated art.

      2. sarcasmic   2 years ago

AI is not creative at all. It has no new ideas. It just collects information and regurgitates it back out. That might be great for, say, writing research papers or reports where no creativity is needed, but anyone who thinks AI is going to come up with something new is going to be sorely disappointed.

    3. Fats of Fury   2 years ago

Get ready for every news article everywhere to start sounding the same.

That's been happening for a while now, no AI involved. As far as novels we'll be lucky to have any at all if the Wokesters have their way.

      1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

I heard something recently about some authors suing some AI outfit for publishing books in their style. Apparently if you feed the learning machine everything some of these prolific authors have written, it can spit out something that could be confused for one of their works. Though if that's the case I think that's saying something about the authors, not the AI.

        1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

As I’ve said before, one thing I’d like to see is the companies that are training these AIs extend the courtesy of making it possible for authors and artists to add a “notraining” metadata tag to their digital works, and respect that tag by not using their works for training.

Not proposing a law, just a human decency.

Sports writer Ethan Strauss astutely breaks down the Dave Portnoy/Washington Post saga: “Journalism is a ‘there are no rules, but you break them at your peril’ sort of industry. This factors into why so many have come to hate it. We aren’t ordained. There actually isn’t a journalistic Hippocratic Oath; we just act like there is. The only real rule is, ‘Don’t make shit up,’ but more specifically, ‘Don’t make shit up in a way that can get you credibly sued.'”

I had to go elsewhere than the link because paywalls and stuff, but while I haven’t followed this controversy, it appears that the Washington Post is doing the only thing the Washington Post seems to be capable of journalistically, and that isn’t journalism, it’s what Douglas Murray called “something else”.

Specifically, it’s this trick in modern Journolisming where when you do stories and interviews, the purpose isn’t to ask the interviewee questions, or report on the facts of a story, but to do “something else”. And this appears to be “something else” on steroids.

My advice to young, up and coming retarded journalists: Stop it.

*edit: The "something else" that caused Murray to discuss this tendency was the now-infamous Roger Scruton Affair where a young-ish Journolist from the New Statesman did an interview with Scruton, then released a highly edited version of it which caused Scruton to lose positions he held in various publications. This was followed by the young retard Journolist to publish a (quickly deleted) tweet of himself swigging from a champaign bottle in celebration of Scruton's troubles.

Murray, being a close friend and associate of Scruton smelled the Bullshit and asked the New Statesman for an unedited transcript of the interview and the New Statesman refused. Murray, being Murray (and importantly a REAL journalist) acquired a copy of the unedited interview and then did a takedown of the New Statesman article, which caused both the journolist and the New Statesman to go into damage control. It was a beautiful moment.

The fashion for bullies seems to me to be of a piece with a ‘growing decay of manners’, as Slavoj Zizek recently described it ["The left must embrace law and order"], that is making itself felt in communities across the country.

It seems like O'Neill has transitioned from faux libertarianism straight to leftist totalitarianism and police states.

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   2 years ago

I heard about this little incident this morning, and what people are missing here is that this is exactly how journalism schools are training these people now.

This isn't a byproduct or accident of some rogue activist masquerading as a reporter. Journalism schools craft their entire curriculums around training their graduates to be left-wing activists now. And a lot of these shitheads are women, so they're also getting all the neomarxist/femtard crap in their women's and ethnic studies courses, which deliberately promote a radical left, cultural marxist ideology. Shit, read your local news rag--if the "reporter" graduated college in the last 15-20 years, 98% of them are all pushing the same line of soft-pedaling everything the left does, and goes full-blast on the right.

THAT'S how you get dishonest cunts like Taylor Lorenz, or Emily Heil in this case, working in the industry. Because that's what the schools are pumping out now. The pathetic part is that even the center-right KNOWS how biased these people are, yet seem to still take everything that comes out of the mainstream media as True and Honest Reporting.

      1. Terran   2 years ago

You shouldn't single it down to "journalism" schools, it's all universities at this point.
