In CNN Town Hall, Chris Christie Says Neither Joe Biden Nor Donald Trump Should Ever Be President Again

Plus: Democrats might try to block the PGA Tour/LIV Golf merger, the author of Eat, Pray, Love has self-canceled her next book, and more...

Chris Christie (Christy Prosser/ZUMAPRESS/Newscom)

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, slammed former President Donald Trump over his handling of classified documents, saying that Trump—who is facing 37 felony charges—has no one to blame but himself.

"He has shown himself, particularly in his post-presidency, to be completely self-centered, completely self-consumed, and doesn't give a damn about the American people, if what the American people want isn't best for him," said Christie.

Christie made these remarks during a CNN town hall with Anderson Cooper on Monday night. Christie is seeking the 2024 Republican nomination for the presidency; during his remarks, he laid into Trump, the frontrunner, as well as other rivals for the nomination—including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis—who have failed to condemn the actions of the former president.

"He's angry and he's vengeful," Christie said of Trump. "And he said 'I will be your retribution.' He wants retribution for himself. I'm convinced that if he goes back to the White House, the next four years will be all about him settling scores."

Christie said that he agreed with former Attorney General William Barr that the Department of Justice's case against Trump was strong; he emphasized that Trump could have easily avoided prosecution by returning the documents at any point prior to the raid on Mar-a-Lago.

When Cooper asked Christie why he thought Trump had kept the documents, he chalked it up to "vanity run amok, ego run amok."

Thus far, Republican primary voters have shown very little indication that they wish to part ways with Trump, their standard-bearer for the past eight years. The very conservative voters who comprise the GOP's base view Trump extremely favorably.

They don't tend to feel the same about Christie. According to The New York Times:

For the most part, Mr. Christie, who announced his campaign last week, has tried to reintroduce himself to the nation as the Republican candidate most willing to forcefully confront Mr. Trump.

But Mr. Christie, who ran a short-lived campaign for president in 2016, has gained little traction in available polling this year and has a more unfavorable rating among Republican voters than any other candidate, according to a recent Monmouth University poll. And he occupies a relatively lonely lane. Most of the other 2024 hopefuls have shied away from much direct criticism of Mr. Trump.

"It was like he was Voldemort from 'Harry Potter'—nobody wanted to mention his name," he said of a recent Republican campaign event, adopting a mocking voice. "Like, say his name, man, say his name."

For Christie to have a chance at the nomination, he must persuade Republicans that it's time to throw Trump overboard—something they were not inclined to do after the 2018 midterms…or the 2020 election…or January 6…and so on.

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, has decided to self-cancel. Her forthcoming novel, The Snow Forest, takes place in Siberia and concerns a Russian family fleeing Soviet tyranny during the mid-1900s. It was slated to be released in February 2024.

But Gilbert has opted to self-cancel, saying in a statement that it is "not time for the book to be published." Why?

Russia's war in Ukraine, apparently. Gilbert had evidently heard from Ukrainian readers expressing "anger, sorrow, disappointment, and pain about the decision that I would choose to release a book right now … set in Russia."

Important announcement about THE SNOW FOREST. Please note that if you were charged for your pre-order, you will be fully refunded. Thank you so much. pic.twitter.com/OAEmrjtfJx

— Elizabeth Gilbert (@GilbertLiz) June 12, 2023

This is absurd. Setting a fictional story in Russia is not in any way, shape, or form an endorsement of Vladimir Putin's behavior. It does not harm Ukraine, or show a lack of sympathy for the Ukrainian cause. Anyone demanding that right-thinking people cease to celebrate Russian art, history, culture, and music is undermining the exact cosmopolitan values they claim are under attack by Putin.

Gilbert's self-flagellation is reminiscent of the orchestras that stopped performing Tchaikovsky in response to the Russian invasion. No one is better off because of this.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D–Conn.) is probing the impending merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, which is backed by the monarchy of Saudi Arabia. The two organizations had previously been at odds, with LIV Golf accusing the PGA Tour of anti-competitive behavior.

But last week, the two organizations abruptly agreed to a merger that would end all pending litigation. Given Saudi Arabia's appalling record on human rights and civil liberties, the deal has infuriated many PGA players and fans.

And now Blumenthal is making it his business, too. CNBC reports:

The June 6 merger announcement was a "sudden and drastic reversal of a position concerning LIV Golf," wrote Blumenthal, who chairs the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. The Tour and its commissioner had previously spoken out strongly against LIV and its role in professional golf.

Meanwhile, the Saudi government's Private Investment Fund, which owns LIV, had made clear plans to use investments in sports to further the Saudi government's objectives, according to Blumenthal's letter.

"PGA Tour's agreement with PIF regarding LIV Golf raises concerns about the Saudi government's role in influencing this effort and the risks posed by a foreign government entity assuming control over a cherished American institution," Blumenthal wrote.

If people wish to express qualms about Saudi Arabia's repressive government becoming more involved in U.S. golf, they have the right to do so. But this is not the federal government's business. Moreover, both Republicans and Democrats have courted favor with Saudi Arabia; former President Donald Trump maintained close ties with the Saudis, and President Joe Biden fist-bumped Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a visit to the country last year.

The federal government is allowed to turn a blind eye to Saudi abuses, but not professional golf? Please.

QUICK HITS

  • Donald Trump will appear in a Miami court on Tuesday for his arraignment. (He's also apparently struggling to find a qualified Florida attorney to represent him.)
  • Sen. Tim Scott (R–S.C.) now calls the Trump indictment a "serious matter."
  • Human remains have been found at the site of the I-95 bridge collapse.
  • Inflation appears to be cooling.
  • Pat Sajak, who has hosted Wheel of Fortune for the last 40 years, plans to retire.

Well, the time has come. I've decided that our 41st season, which begins in September, will be my last. It's been a wonderful ride, and I'll have more to say in the coming months. Many thanks to you all. (If nothing else, it'll keep the clickbait sites busy!)

The White House on Monday called for a controversial pistol regulation that would impact millions of Americans, requiring many more gun owners to register with the federal government.

President Joe Biden’s Office of Management and Budget released a statement backing new federal regulations for “stabilizing braces” for pistols. The White House also blasted a Republican Congressional effort to push back against the rule, making clear Biden would veto Republicans’ bill if needed.

The Firearms Policy Coalition, which challenged the Biden rule in court, said that it would have made “millions of peaceable people into felons overnight simply for owning a firearm that has been lawful to own for a decade, unless they either destroy their constitutionally protected property or comply with the NFA’s onerous and unconstitutional requirements.”

U.S. Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., introduce a resolution in March to overturn the federal rule change via the Congressional Review Act, which allows Congress to block federal rule changes.

Flashback to DoJ/FBI determination on why Hillary would not face espionage act charging:

Among the statutes listed are 18 U.S.C. 793(d), which covers the “willfull” retention of national defense information that could harm the U.S.; 18 U.S.C. 793(f), which pertains to "gross negligence" in the handling of classified information by permitting the information to be "removed from its proper place of custody"; and 18 U.S.C. 1924, listed as a misdemeanor related to retaining classified materials at an "unauthorized location."

Listed directly below to the elements of 18 U.S.C. 793(f) were the words: "NOTE: DOJ not willing to charge this; only known cases are Military, cases when accused lost the information (e.g. thumb drive sent to unknown recipient at wrong address.)"

How Biden’s big investments spurred a factory boom
BY TOBIAS BURNS - 06/13/23 6:00 AM ET
A surge in manufacturing construction across the country is grabbing the attention of economists and workers on the ground as legislative efforts to reinvigorate the U.S. industrial base are bearing fruit.
    ..
Experts say these changes have been long-awaited, and they represent a watershed moment for U.S. heavy industry and a shift toward more environmentally friendly methods of production amid an ongoing climate emergency.

The new czar of the $25 billion empire calls himself even “more political” and more focused on domestic politics than his dad.

He’s also generally seen as more radical.

Just what America needs — a younger, more extreme Soros, with more energy and more interest in the nation’s internal politics.

His foundation has spent countless millions funding campaigns to keep criminals out on the streets, free to commit new crimes.

Soros’ money promotes the false, divisive narrative that racial bias infects America’s justice system.

And he discovered and exploited a weakness of American democracy: The ease with which one billionaire’s giving could deeply politicize the election of local prosecutors.

Countless lives have been lost to murderers left free by extremist prosecutors who won election with the help of generous Soros funding.

Now the son boasts that he and his dad “think alike” and that he hopes to broaden George Soros’ left-wing agenda, focusing more attention on voting and abortion rights and gender-equality issues.

Brace for an escalation of the culture wars, as Alex funds hard-left approaches to election laws (a la the turnout-boosting Georgia statute that President Joe Biden smeared as “Jim Crow 2.0”) to “trans rights” to toxic assumptions on race and so on.

              Thanks for the link.

I think I understand what Sowell is trying to say. If more black people adopted the mainstream white cultural values, then they would be more successful like more white people are.

But it is also the case that black people are not the same as white people, in the sense that black people have a shared history and shared experience, of slavery and discrimination, that white people in the main just don't have. So to tell black people to "act white" is in a sense telling them to ignore this shared heritage, which is a tough ask.

So I wonder if it is possible to have it both ways. Instead of saying "to be successful you have to act like white people", how about, let's have many different ways to be successful that are culturally agnostic.

I trotted this out yesterday, and I'll do so again today, buttmunch.

        https://www.influencewatch.org/non-profit/open-society-foundations/

In the United States, OSF’s U.S. Programs have given hundreds of millions to left-wing political organizations, including multi-million dollar gifts to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Planned Parenthood, the Robin Hood Foundation, the Tides Foundation, the Brennan Center for Justice, and Alliance for Citizenship, among numerous others. Confidential documents (available here) indicate that the OSF’s U.S. Programs agenda prioritizes a number of liberal issue prerogatives and funds left-wing organizations to carry out these policies. Some of these prerogatives include enacting liberal comprehensive immigration reform (including a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants), cutting the number of prison inmates by 50 percent, increasing welfare handouts, and raising taxes to redistribute wealth. OSF has also been criticized for “compromising” American foreign policy.

OSF’s operations are notoriously complex, and in 2016 the foundation was labeled the least transparent “think tank” in the United States reviewed by NGO Monitor, an OSF-funded transparency group. In spite of this, OSF maintains a position as a stalwart financier of left-wing nonprofits, financially supporting a large number of left-wing organizations in the U.S. and exporting leftist policies to countries across the world.

In his early life Soros was deeply influenced by philosopher Karl Popper’s concept of the “open society.” Based on Popper’s philosophy, and despite having made his fortune in the financial markets, Soros argues, “the spread of market values into all areas of life is endangering our open and democratic society” and that “the main enemy of the open society,” is no longer communism but rather capitalism.

An Open Society Foundations 2015-2018 U.S. Programs strategic plan that was taken from the group and leaked indicates that among other things, Open Society Foundations’ U.S. Programs platform calls for:

        - An economy governed by the “redistribution of resources;”
        - A justice system that reduces incarceration, abolishes the death penalty, and promotes “health centered” drug use punishment;
        - Enactment of comprehensive immigration reform, that gives “full political, economic, and civic participation” to illegal immigrants;
        - A reduction in “the racial wealth gap” through income redistribution;
        - and “Inclusive economic development” focused on raising the minimum wage and employment for ex-convict

        1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Yup, they are a left-wing organization which also happens to have some positions that libertarians can agree on, but many with which libertarians don't agree with.

They don't really want electric cars, they want the middle ages back.

    https://nypost.com/2023/06/13/greens-want-electric-cars-but-not-the-things-required-to-run-them/

Why is it that greens want everyone to drive electric cars but don’t want people to have electricity? Or, it seems, the cars.

I noted last week in these pages how the people who want everyone to have an electric car in the garage have also been pursuing policies that, per the North American Electric Reliability Corporation’s latest report, are likely to result in rolling blackouts this summer.

Nothing has improved on that front. But the thing about electric cars is that they don’t just need electricity, they also need batteries to store it in. And electric motors.

That’s awkward because those cars and batteries require lots of copper and other metals, plus the extraction of “rare earth” minerals that come mostly from China and Africa, where they’re often produced by child or slave labor.

(We used to mine rare earths in America, but the enviros basically got that shut down. It’s easier for companies to get the stuff out of the ground in places where there aren’t sandal-wearing scolds everywhere.)

Norway has found vast resources of metals and rare earths on the seabed off its coast and has started preparations to mine them across an underwater region roughly the size of Germany.

According to the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate, which manages seabed resources, the sea bottom hosts polymetallic nodules that include magnesium, cobalt, niobium and rare-earth minerals.

Just the thing for manufacturing batteries and motors for electric cars and windings for wind turbines too.

The World Wildlife Foundation calls such mining an “avoidable environmental disaster,” saying “there are many unknowns and much to do in ocean science, policy and industry innovations before any deep seabed mining activities should be allowed to take place.”

These organizations are much quieter about the exploitation of minerals — and people — in places like China and Africa.

A realistic and sensible electric-car policy would support reliable, safe, environmentally friendly power to charge them — which means plants fired by nuclear power and fracked gas.

And it would endorse the safe, clean and humane extraction of the necessary minerals, which probably means deep-seabed mining.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/political/burisma-owner-allegedly-recorded-biden-bribe-convos-insurance-policy-and-wray-covered

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) on Monday dropped yet another bombshell in the recent spate of Biden corruption headlines - that the foreign national who allegedly bribed then-VP Joe Biden kept seventeen secret recordings of both Hunter and Joe Biden as an 'insurance' policy.

According to the Washington Examiner, that foreign national is Burisma owner Mykola Zlochevsky.

"The 1023 produced to that House Committee redacted reference that the foreign national who allegedly bribed Joe and Hunter Biden allegedly has audio recordings of his conversations with them. Seventeen total recordings," Grassley said during a speech on the Senate floor.

"These recordings were allegedly kept as a sort of insurance policy for the foreign national in case he got into a tight spot. The 1023 also indicates that then-Vice President Joe Biden may have been involved in Burisma employing Hunter Biden," he continued. "More than that, the FBI made Congress review a redacted unclassified document in a classified facility. That goes to show you the disrespect the FBI has for Congress."

Also on Monday, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) subpoenaed Hunter Biden's former business partner, Devin Archer, demanding he sit for a deposition this week according to CBS News.

In a letter to Archer's attorney, Comer wrote that Archer had "played a significant role in the Biden family's business deals abroad, including but not limited to China, Russia, and Ukraine."

"Additionally, while undertaking these ventures with the Biden family, your client met with then-Vice President Biden on multiple occasions, including in the White House," he continued.

USA Today: Republican attempts to politicize Hunter Biden drug addiction loathsome

Hunter Biden's drug use back in public eye as criminal charges could be around the corner
    ...
Hunter Biden’s battle with substance use is back in the spotlight as the White House prepares for the possibility that the president’s youngest son could face criminal charges. Federal prosecutors are reportedly nearing a decision on whether to charge Hunter Biden with tax crimes and with making a false statement about a gun purchase.
    ..
When Donald Trump invoked Hunter Biden’s drug abuse during a presidential debate in 2020, Joe Biden came to his son’s defense. “My son – like a lot of people, like a lot of people you know at home – had a drug problem,” Biden said. “He’s overtaken it, he’s fixed it, he’s worked on it. And I’m proud of him.”

'My son has done nothing wrong':Biden defends son, Hunter Biden, in first interview since announcing his reelection bid

      Lying sack of shit.

Hunter Biden has spoken candidly and written extensively about his battle with substance abuse. In his 2021 memoir, he recounted times when he would smoke crack cocaine every 15 minutes, the two weeks he spent thousands of dollars on drugs, and the 2019 intervention that ended with his father chasing him around outside the family home in Wilmington, Delaware.

The problem with this is that the form asks if one has used these substances within the past 12 months. Hunter said "no". He lied. Therefore, he is guilty of a felony as stated on the form.

This is basically a bullshit puff piece meant to deflect attention from the fact that Hunter lied on the form and should be treated as anyone else.

So, let's talk about the "Clinton sock drawer" case.

    https://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/legaldocs/dwvkdwkwdpm/frankel-judicialwatchvNARA--ABJopinion.pdf

The Presidential Records Act says that presidential records must be divided into two bins, "Presidential records" and "personal records". Presidential records must be stored with NARA. Personal records may be stored however the president wishes.

Here is how the law defines "personal records":

    https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/44/2201

(3)The term “personal records” means all documentary materials, or any reasonably segregable portion therof,[2] of a purely private or nonpublic character which do not relate to or have an effect upon the carrying out of the constitutional, statutory, or other official or ceremonial duties of the President. Such term includes—
    (A)diaries, journals, or other personal notes serving as the functional equivalent of a diary or journal which are not prepared or utilized for, or circulated or communicated in the course of, transacting Government business;
(B)materials relating to private political associations, and having no relation to or direct effect upon the carrying out of constitutional, statutory, or other official or ceremonial duties of the President; and
(C)materials relating exclusively to the President’s own election to the office of the Presidency; and materials directly relating to the election of a particular individual or individuals to Federal, State, or local office, which have no relation to or direct effect upon the carrying out of constitutional, statutory, or other official or ceremonial duties of the President.

So, Clinton's interview tapes with that historian pretty clearly falls within the law's definition of "personal records" here.

But, if I understand the argument that some of you are making, it is that because the PRA gives the sole authority to the president to decide what is or is not a "presidential record" vs. a "personal record", he can do whatever he likes with any document. Is that right? So, for example, that official top secret government briefing on the nuclear capabilities of North Korea? Sure, that's a "personal record", just like a personal diary, so Trump gets to store that in his private bathroom.

Can we agree that interview tapes are not the same as official top secret government documents? And that the two cases, Clinton's "sock drawer" case, and Trump's case, have substantive qualitative differences to them? And that, if Trump really thinks that he is entitled to take any document he wants and call it a "personal record" because there is no one who is going to override his decision, that he is not being faithful to the letter of the law, and instead exploiting a loophole in the enforcement mechanism of this law?

    1. Don't look at me!   2 years ago

      .. exploiting a loophole

Also known as not breaking the law.

      1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

Jeff deliberately didn't quote the part of his link that shows the definition is only applicable to that chapter of U.S. Code § 2201, and not the law in general or the ruling in the "sock drawer" case as he implies.

        He's so consistently dishonest.

    2. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Stop thinking about it, forget looking at stupid facts, and just feel.

Hillary bad. Hillary did it first. Whatever Hillary did was worse because it's Hillary. That means Trump didn't do anything wrong.

See? So much easier than engaging the brain.

      1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

        What "facts"?

Chemleft doesn't have an argument so he's pettifogging about how one specific law defines words, and not the judgment rendered in Judicial Watch v. NARA.

His statement, "Here is how the law defines “personal records”, is essentially a lie because he deliberately doesn't quote the first sentence in his link.

        "As used in this chapter—
        (2)The term “Presidential records” means..."

Instead inferring that it applies to all laws rather than just that chapter of U.S. Code § 2201.

You know Chemjeff is a consummate liar, but once again you allow yourself to be duped.

    3. JesseAz   2 years ago (edited)

You talked about it but ignored the holding of broad deference to the president in PRA cases, why? There were more tapes than just what you referenced dumdum.

      Gaslighting as usual?

, it is that because the PRA gives the sole authority to the president to decide what is or is not a “presidential record” vs. a “personal record”, he can do whatever he likes with any document.

This is a fucking strawman. The case you cite gives deference to the president. NARA can file a civil suit for records if they disagree. Not a criminal one retard.

    4. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

Incidentally, what you won't see on right-wing news because it would require actually reading the text of the "Clinton sock drawer" case:

The litigation of that case rested on earlier caselaw (Armstrong) that was about judicial review of how records were classified, going back to when Bush Sr. was VP. In that case, some left-wing outfit sued Bush for classifying TOO MANY records as "presidential records", not too few. Because, if a record is classified as a "presidential record", it is then removed from the relevant agency from which it originated, and then no longer becomes subject to FOIA requests.

So, it is interesting to consider. Could it be one reason why Trump decided to take so many records with him, was to keep them away from FOIA requests?

      1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

Where are you quoting from for the middle paragraph? Because that's not your writing style.

    5. Zeb   2 years ago

The president is the executive. Everything the executive branch does is a delegation of the president's powers. As such he can't be constrained by executive branch rules, nor can congress constrain him in his executive duties. Separation of powers.

      1. chemjeff radical individualist   2 years ago

I imagine Congress would say that since they control the purse strings, they are entitled to demand that as a condition of that funding, the executive branch, including the president, create and preserve appropriate records of what happened.

And besides, I don't think that is Trump's actual argument. Is he, or his defenders, actually arguing that the PRA itself is unconstitutional?

        1. Zeb   2 years ago

I don't know. Trump seems to pick pretty bad lawyers.

Requiring that presidential records be kept in a national archive seems fine. Criminally prosecuting a former president (and current presidential candidate) because he kept copies of some documents is what seems problematic.

In any case, he isn't being charged under the PRA (I don't think it even has any criminal provisions). I see no issue with the national archives suing to get documents that should have been archived under the law. That's a totally separate issue from whether the documents remain classified or whether they were criminally mishandled.

        2. See Double You   2 years ago

The PRA very well could be if it infringes on the President's Article II powers. Something that can be argued in good faith on various sides.

I am a little concerned about the cover up being so blatant. I feel that nothing will come of this investigation though. Biden is just too protected, and if he goes down for this, then Trump will get irrefutable evidence that the impeachment was a sham meant to cover up a crime.

Democrats can't afford that kind of black eye publicly.

No? They've been flagrant about their corruption for the last several years. Hillary Clinton is hawking caps on Trump's indictment over something she herself did but worse. The FBI has been caught setting up right-wing dumbasses again and again. . . crickets . . .

New testimony reveals senior FBI official expressed 'strong concerns' about Mar-a-Lago raid
D'Antuono noted that there were "several abnormalities" with the department's process leading up to the raid.

    - The FBI had not obtained consent to search Trump’s home before obtaining the search warrant.

    - Agents who took part did not wait for Trump’s attorney to arrive on-site before forcibly entering by cutting locks and conducting the search.

    - The Justice Department did not assign a U.S. attorney to oversee the raid, which is highly unusual.

    1. SRG   2 years ago

Is it normal practice in search warrants to get the homeowner to consent to the search before getting for the warrant or wait for the homeowner's attorney?

Or is it only applicable when Trump is involved? You know, the Lèse-majesté thing.

      1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago (edited)

“Is it normal practice in search warrants to get the homeowner to consent to the search before getting for the warrant”

Sigh… The bureau didn’t seek consent from the Justice Department to effect a search of the premises prior to seeking a search warrant.

This is my fault, I assumed you weren’t a retard.

“or wait for the homeowner’s attorney”

In these non-criminal cases they first contact the attorney before they search as they generally get permission to conduct the search. They didn’t. This was unorthodox.

That Oxfordian law degree sure isn’t pulling its weight, huh.

Here’s the letter from the House Judiciary Committee to Merrick Garland noting the abnormalities and asking why they occurred. Read it before replying so you don’t waste my time again.

Apparently, Joe Biden decided he would rather have a root canal without anesthesia than temporarily put Kamala Harris in charge of the country:

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65851446

The White House said the president would "not be put under anaesthesia" during the procedure, so the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution - allowing temporary transfer of a president's powers and duties to the vice-president - would not be invoked.

    1. Don't look at me!   2 years ago

Root canals are normally done with local anesthesia.

      1. Moderation4ever   2 years ago

Any I have had were strictly locals.

    2. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

A few fun things to point out:

      - Standard for root canals is local/numbing. Almost no one goes to sleep under anesthesia for them

      - Anyone who would have anesthesia considered, is usually due to severe mental handicap / autism (they dont have enough cognition and judgement to sit there and cooperate without moving). Basically this is for the retards

      - General anesthesia isn't needed to invoke the 25th against Biden, just watching him for 10 minutes where he gets lost, has handlers control him, watching him trip and fall on a daily basis. Pretty much the example anyone with a demented, doddering elderly grandparent (who also shouldn't be trusted with even a box cutter) is familiar with.

    > Thus far, Republican primary voters have shown very little indication that they wish to part ways with Trump, their standard-bearer for the past eight years. The very conservative voters who comprise the GOP's base view Trump extremely favorably.

Those of you old of enough to remember Nixon and old enough to have been aware during the Watergate scandal, will recall that the same thing was true of Nixon. Partisan politics is about defending your Glorious Leader at all costs. So Nixon had his staunch defenders. But as soon as the evidence mounted and was made public, opinions turned. When it became clear that he would be impeached for criminal (not political) acts, when it became impossible to ignore the fact that he was a crook, he lost his diehard supporters.

Will the same be true of Trump? It's clear to anyone who is aware today that Trump is guilty. The only quibble is about how serious the crime actually is. So far the Trump defense seems to be the Calvin defense (I didn't do it, no one saw me do it, and you can't prove I did it). But will his base see the writing on the wall and abandon him?

Dunno. His base is no longer rooted in conservative principles, his base is full on populist in a way the 1970s Republicans never were. Back in 1972 people still generally believed in the rule of law. Today the rule of law is spat upon as people demand Strong Leaders who will ignore the law to get things done. So I have no idea where this will go. Trump will be convicted, but it's not any sort of jail term, he'll get a big slap on the wrist and stuff, and maybe barred from running for office ever again, but his base won't care, they will just use him as a rallying cry.

But maybe I'm wrong, and maybe a conviction will be the kick in the butt that gets the Republican base to see that, as one Republican once remarked of a former amoralist president, "character matters".

    1. creech   2 years ago

Nixon was persuaded to resign when influential Republicans, like Goldwater,

    ..
That is one scenario for the Republican ticket in 2024.
    ..
This would mean Donald Trump winning his party’s nomination and picking failed Arizona governor candidate Kari Lake as his running mate.
    ..
It’s early in the process and presidential candidates usually do not select a running mate until the summer before the election, which would mean we have almost a year and a half before Trump would make that choice.

Hmm, BMI over 40 is likely both Trump and Christie.

        1. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

He is fairly tall, from what I remember 6'3, 6'4? So you can actually have a pretty high weight and still not hit that bar.

Looking up weight online it says he's 240. Maybe he fudged that number (or maybe the WH doctor did for him) to flatter him a little. Regardless, he would need to weigh 330 lbs (he is absolutely not that fat) to have a BMI of 40. If he is what his stats say, he's 29.2. I suspect he is much closer to 30 than he is to 40.

Christie is visibly a blimp of fat. A quick eyeballing I bet he is 45-55, but ill look up his stats for fun. 40 is a morbidly obese fatso, and Christie looks like he ate one of those guys.

BMI, unfortunately, is a poor standard by itself for measuring obesity. Many guys who are on the muscular end tend to have high BMIs, but are obviously not fat at all.

            1. Mike Parsons   2 years ago

Ya, its context dependent. But there are uses.

A BMI of 30 in a person that is clearly very muscular and fit is clearly not going to be an indicator of concern, when said person has low body fat percentage and excellent cardiovascular health. This should of course be discussed in the understanding of the person's overall picture. Once you get over 30 BMI, the vast majority of the population who aren't in this extremely fit category start to get some of the following: Hypertension, diabetes, high lipids, heart disease.

As you approach 40, its no longer a question. There aren't healthy people here, except in some hypothetical extremes that wouldn't be applicable to the gen pop (and would be very unlikely to exist other than a very rare outlier).

Its not the end all be all, but its a good piece of data in certain scenarios. Much less useful in the normal/overweight (24-30) category, as the amount of people that can be perfectly healthy here is common with these BMIs. More useful at extremes (35, esp >40)

    5. ducksalad   2 years ago (edited)

the opening article doesn't seem to back up the headline. I don't see where it says anything about why Christie thinks Biden should never be president again. just because Christie wants to be?? I think there are many good reasons that neither Trump nor Biden should ever be pres again, or even hold elected office again. but what is Christie's reason??

Chris Christie is a pompous self-centered ass that the voters have already rejected as a potential president. Ignore him.

Gilbert had evidently heard from Ukrainian readers expressing "anger, sorrow, disappointment, and pain about the decision that I would choose to release a book right now … set in Russia."

Now is not the time to denigrate the soviets.

Given Saudi Arabia's appalling record on human rights and civil liberties, the deal has infuriated many PGA players and fans.

LIKE THE PGA DIDN'T PLAY AT SEGREGATED COUNTRY CLUBS.

    Inflation appears to be cooling.

I suppose that happens when you reach a price point that no one can afford.

They're sure no reasonable prosecutor would find any reason to go forward with the case but Trump and all Republicans are literal Hitler so any accusation is good to repeat long after it's been debunked.

In short, they are active supporters of the two tiered justice system.

How could there be any case ever? Democrats are pure, and honest. Truly innocent and medals of integrity.

Did you see the article about Smiths 2nd hand? Had to be removed as an attorney for prosecutorial abuses in 2009.

Of course he's not, he's simply acting obtuse and parroting the "equity" argument of critical theory.

"papers downplay the race of non-white offenders, mentioning their race much later in articles than they do for white offenders."

Forget "much later in the articles." If the perpetrator is white, they will usually include that in the headline.

You guys are all wrong. Marxism is the most important thing. Issues like skin color, gender, etc. are just tactics.
