Review: A Lesson on Political Ambition From Dungeons & Dragons Movie
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is more Rob Reiner than J.R.R. Tolkien.

One reviewer referred to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves as a "third-tier Lord of the Rings ripoff." That's not wrong, exactly, but appropriately humble warmed-over J.R.R. Tolkien is still good.
Cocky bard Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine) and barbarian-with-a-heart-of-gold Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez) lead a crew of goofy improvisers against a cronyist and corrupt Lord of Neverwinter (Hugh Grant).
The grand finale finds our heroes locked in a gladiatorial combat that serves a dual function: It provides bread and circuses for the ordinary townsfolk, and it's a way for Grant's character to separate the kingdom's elites from their treasure after reassuring them it was safe in a government vault.
In the end, the movie is more like The Princess Bride, with the same lessons: Never trust anyone with political ambitions, follow your heart, and have fun.

Dungeons and Dragons NEVER had anything to do with J.R.R. Tolkien. It took its cues from Howard and Leiber and other pulp fantasy writers.
Just as not all beer is Budweiser, not all fantasy is Tolkien (and not all roleplaying games are D&D).

Pretty much - though the original guides did have some Tolkien elements, like balrogs, though - presumably for copyright reasons - they were called balors. Hey, in the first dungeon I ran, I had a jabberwock (and a vorpal sword) and no-one minded.

It's a mishmash of every sword and sorcery fiction property that came out prior to it. The construction of the elves, dwarves, rangers, dragons, and wizards are all clearly influenced by Lord of the Rings. Hell, Smaug is the epitome of a DnD dungeon boss guarding a hoard of treasure.

Wow. Completely wrong.
You were like this with the Miles Morales stuff too.
I bet you like STD.
Very true about roleplaying games. My favorite non-D & D roleplaying game in college was Villians & Vigilantes.
In V & V, players would use the dice and stock images to create the characters and powers of either Superheroes or Supervillians much along the lines of characters found in Marvel, D.C., First, Eclipse, Revolver, and other comics franchises. I don't know if it had a map or pewter figures to go with it, but my friends and I got into a few levels of it and had great fun! I wish it was still in the sales cases with the Magic The Gathering and other games and collectibles.
Never had anything to do?? Then why were they sued by the Tolkien estate for using Hobbits and Ents?? And of course the Hobbit, LOTR, and the Silmarillion are listed in appendix N.
And then there's the Ranger class. Surely you're not going to deny that obvious link??
I think you'll find that these materials were in expansion packs.
Expansion whats?
How do you say 'I've no idea what D&D is' without saying 'I've no idea what D&D is'?
Shows how little you know. It’s a useful phrase to encompass official and unofficial modifications and enlargements to rulebooks – plus some of these are officially called expansion packs, e.g., https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/16138/dungeons-dragons-fantasy-adventure-board-game-forb
Your ComicBookGuy impression sucks.
Every DnD campaign I was ever party to was a second or third rate version of LOTR. Mostly because no matter how good the DM's world/adventure was it was still populated by 4th rate PCs run by 5th rate players.
The movie is true to the tabletop experience and it is the first DnD movie that was any good at all.

D&D may not have been anchored in LotR, but most of the players and DMs were far more familiar with LotR than with Howard or Leiber or other early fantasy writers hence they would have been inspired accordingly. It’s notable that there is a huge divergence between the magic in LorR and the magic in D&D, and there are no clerics in LotR because there are no religions.
One of the first things I was ever told by a DM was to never roleplay yourself in a game. If "you" died it might be so traumatic that you might kill yourself. LoL.
Reason: Never trust anyone with political ambitions, unless they're trying to force high density housing on your bourgeois town.
Little late to the review game on the recent D&D movie.
But anyone, it was pretty good
