Don't Be Fooled by Randi Weingarten's Rehabilitation Tour
The teachers union head honcho is trying to engage in some astonishing revisionism, claiming she actually wasn't opposed to school reopening.

On Tuesday, the fact-checkers over at PolitiFact—which is run by the Poynter Institute, that nonprofit focused on media literacy and journalism ethics training—declared that "it's misleading to suggest that [American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten] didn't want to pursue reopening schools at all."
"As educators, parents and students struggled through the early COVID-19 pandemic to balance learning with health safety rules, teachers union president Randi Weingarten grappled, too," wrote Madison Czopek in a piece that attempts to evaluate Weingarten's truth telling before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic last week (approvingly shared on Twitter by the subject herself). Czopek proceeded to go line by line not evaluating Weingarten's numerous claims during her testimony or on her recent media tour, but rather the claims made by Twitter users who added community-sourced context to the AFT head's tweet.
Republicans on the House Covid subcommittee want you to think I wanted to keep schools closed. Here's what I actually said… over & over again. pic.twitter.com/TTWuYgC5nN
— Randi Weingarten ???????????????????????????????????? (@rweingarten) April 26, 2023
"Weingarten advocated for tailored approaches that prioritized safety needs of individual districts, educators and students but stopped short of endorsing a full return to in-person learning all across the country," wrote Czopek, which sounds an awful lot like Weingarten's own hair splitting. "The AFT's reopening plan, first released in April 2020, prioritized maintaining physical distance between people, establishing COVID-19 testing protocols and involving school staff and parents in these decisions. It also called for federal aid to help schools prepare."
Weingarten has offered a similar line recently: It's not that she or the AFT opposed school reopening, you see. It's that they just wanted schools to safely reopen and, well, when various actors didn't accede to their polite requests, they had no choice but to remain closed. What's conveniently excluded from that framing is the ludicrousness of union demands, the constant goalpost shifting, the coffin-protest hysterics, and the degree to which American school closures were out of step with the rest of the developed world, most severely in blue states and cities.
For example, one demand in the union's April 2020 reopening plan (touted repeatedly by Weingarten over the last week) was the cancellation of student loan debt for all teachers, which you might notice is unrelated to airborne virus spread. Another involved a temporary moratorium on teacher evaluations (which would make it hard to assess whether they were actually doing their jobs) while a third involved "rethinking student assessments"(which would make it hard to ensure children are actually learning).
Today's (hagiographic) NYT piece on Randi Weingarten is unintentionally hilarious at times. These teachers unions had *absurd* demands––why did they need their student-loan debt canceled in order to go back into the classroom safely? Have we ever gotten this one answered? pic.twitter.com/vypGxCFRn3

"Safe reopening" is, after all, a convenient and subjective turn of phrase to hide behind. As The New York Times' Jonathan Mahler summarized it:
Because of the decentralized structure of America's public-education system, which has some 14,000 different school districts, the federal government could not order schools to reopen for in-person learning, but in July 2020, President [Donald] Trump threatened to withhold federal funds from those that didn't. His education secretary, Betsy DeVos, echoed his sentiments, demanding that the nation's schools be "fully operational" by the fall without providing a specific plan for doing so.…
Weingarten did not believe the Trump administration was giving schools what teachers needed to return to work safely. She publicly denounced Trump and DeVos's call to reopen as "reckless," "callous" and "cruel," and the A.F.T. passed a resolution supporting local strikes if schools were forced to reopen in areas where a variety of safety conditions hadn't been met.
Florida served, in fall 2020, as an early experiment in whether schools could safely reopen (just as they had in France, Germany, the U.K., Italy, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Poland, and Greece). But stateside, "an A.F.T. political action committee produced a TV ad attacking Trump, citing claims that schools were becoming superspreader sites and that children were being used as 'guinea pigs,'" after Florida reopened, added Mahler (in a piece that goes easy on Weingarten).
One might be forgiven for thinking, then, that the union and its leader were waging a pitched ideological battle, not waiting for evidence before determining the best path forward.
"In Feb. 2021, long after the rest of the world knew better, Weingarten advocated closing entire schools for a 24-hour wipedown if a single person tested positive for COVID," wrote Reason's Matt Welch this week. "This is not working to keep schools open, this is working to keep schools closed."
In New York City, the mayor at the time shuttered schools in November 2020 because the positivity rate had gotten above 3 percent "even though that community spread threshold was far below those recommended by international health authorities, and weekly tests inside school buildings were showing a minuscule positivity rate of 0.18 percent," wrote Welch, adding that unions also influenced New York's policy of instituting "mandatory 10-day closures for any school with 2 positive cases," which led to kids having very little in-person instruction.
"Weingarten helped influence the CDC's global outlier of a Feb. 2021 recommendation that students have an average of 6 feet of distance from one another" in classrooms, which "effectively sentenced millions to 'hybrid' learning purgatory," added Welch.
It was Weingarten's benign-seeming safetyism, in other words, that informed many school districts' approaches—and led to kids in blue states and cities being forced to sit at home for months on end.
"Children are the least at-risk population, but in many areas of the country they continue to face draconian mitigation policies—either in their name (low chance of serious COVID complications doesn't mean no chance) or in the name of protecting their elders," wrote Mary Katharine Ham in The Atlantic back in January 2022. "In our focus on one threat, we've let a thousand others flourish: learning loss, destabilization of the public-school system due to under-enrollment, self-harm, behavioral problems."
"To request a cost-benefit analysis of any COVID-mitigation policy in places where this style of thinking prevails is to be accused of desiring child sacrifice. The Alexandria City Public Schools board member Margaret Lorber asked parents in 2021, 'Do you want your child to be alive or to be educated?'" added Ham. Of course such rhetoric seems permissible to public officials when teachers unions have been carrying coffins to protest in the streets and writing mock obituaries for themselves.
"I have worked for the last 20 or 30 years helping kids every single day. I've been a schoolteacher, I've been a union leader," Weingarten said, in yoga-teacher tones, during a CNN panel last week. This, like many other things Weingarten claims, is not really accurate unless you're willing to stretch the truth like it's a Gumby toy.
Weingarten worked for six years as a history teacher early on in her 40-year career. But for most of her life, she has advocated for teachers' interests, which is demonstrably not the same as "helping kids."
To tell parents, many of whom are concerned by the two decades' worth of progress wiped out in math and reading for fourth-graders; the fact that eighth-graders' average math scores fell in all 50 states minus one; and may have in some cases initiated the exodus of some of the 1.3 million children from the public school system, that the person who helped keep schools closed has their kids' best interests in mind is deeply offensive. Her job is fundamentally to secure higher pay and more job protection for teachers who pay union dues, not to make sure your child is happy, healthy, or safe.

some dude took Mr. Weingarten to the shed on cnn the other day I almost felt sorry for him but then I remember all those hideous pics and vids of the screaming and pointed fingers obo a union that should not exist
Hey, whatever happened in the schools was secondary. Randi was on a crusade to do something much more important: defeat Trump.
It was Weingarten's fault, it was those damn raccoon dogs.
#NeverForgetRacoonDogs

Speciesist!
Only conspiracy theorists opposed school closures. It's best to just trust the government at all times.
You work for Reason?
I read somewhere that she was totally opposed to any child taking a bus (a waste of good money that should go to 'teachers' and the 'unions') to school until she realized she had the power to throw every kid under them....
AMNESTY!!!! All must be forgiven, or you are nothing but a deplorable MAGA hat wearing shill for those who hate children!!

Don't Be Fooled by Randi Weingarten's Rehabilitation Tour
“There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.”
Too bad too many were fooled by her and the rest of the Branch Covidians from the start.
Weingarten was not at all opposed to schools re-opening, she just wanted to make sure they re-opened safely. Which means she wanted much smaller class sizes with much larger physical spread, air exchange systems fit for a Class 4 biolab, hazard pay for teachers, a full vaccine, hourly Covid testing, and a unicorn shitting gold nickels in every classroom. Not her fault that the government refused to give the schools more than a few measly hundred billion dollars for that stuff.
What's less of a surprise is that we did almost precisely zero research here in the US on the info that could have been useful. Early on it was clear to everyone except the just the flu crowd that kids themselves weren't at risk. But that research happened in China not here. We didn't know whether kids might be the vector of transmission as they usually are for anything that might involve snot or dirt or shit. But by May 2020, 30 countries HAD done that research - which is one big reason the rest of the world generally reopened schools then. And we did not one thing to benchmark what other countries did to reopen or stay open. One might imagine that libertarians would be interested in what Sweden did - but nope.
In the total absence of information - it was all about a power game.
Early on it was clear to everyone except the just the flu crowd that kids themselves weren’t at risk.
I don't think that's really true. A lot of people at least behaved as if they thought their children were at risk. And there's no "just the flu". Flu is a serious illness for a lot of people. The closest comparison to covid that most people are familiar with.
I do agree that it is disgraceful how little good research was done on things like this and all the NPIs.
The people begging for vaccines for kids were all mask wearing chicken littles like JFree there.
I think it was reasonable to shut the schools early on. The data WAS early/preliminary and no rational society acts as if kids are consenting adults so they need no extra protection. My kids are no longer school age so I had no stake in that - but I obviously understand that thought process.
What I really don't like is that we chose to do NOTHING to get the school facilities ready for Aug 2020 - with no summer/outdoor school to keep kids in learning mode. That would have been an ideal task for a militia muster. Get that shit done. Cheap. So all adults can get back to their regular life as well. Instead we adults chose to suck on a public teat, lounge around in our pajamas, and celebrate higher house prices with cash-out refis. What a waste of a people. And now apparently with complete amnesia too.
Fuck off. You even admit to wanting schools shit down even though you claim we knew early on. Yes. People like ME knew that early and said they should have reopened a full semester before you claimed to want to. People you blame showed school data from Sweden and private schools that remained open and knew it was always safe you bedwetting piece of shit.
“One might imagine that libertarians would be interested in what Sweden did – but nope.”
Hey look, everybody! According to JFear, libertarians were never interested in Sweden. Or…the simplest web search will reveal that, once again, JFear is confidently declaring shit that isn’t true.
“Early on it was clear to everyone except the just the flu crowd that kids themselves weren’t at risk.”
Let’s pick that apart real quick. According to JFear, “everyone” knew kids weren’t at risk. Except the people who said it was “just the flu”. So the people who JFear derides for NOT taking COVID seriously ALSO were worried Kids were at risk?
You get that? He is trying to subtly blame the COVID skeptics for what his side was doing. It wasn’t that crazy people were wailing about brain damage to kids and killing grandma. No his side ALWAYS knew kids were safe…it was really the COVID skeptics. Who the fuck is JFear kidding?
“In the total absence of information – it was all about a power game.”
This is, of course, horseshit. There was no “total absence of information”. The US couldn’t study COVID in its schools, because the Weingartens of the country shut down our schools. But that didn’t mean we lacked for information.
As early as June, Nature (an America-based science journal) was posting studies of populations in Japan, So Korea, Iceland and more, where schools were not closed- studies by international teams that included the US. And they were providing pretty clear evidence of what we now know to be true: kids were not at risk from COVID, and it was not risky to send them to school
This is the gaslighting game JFear and Faucci are playing. OF COURSE this was about power. But JFear wants us to believe that the “power games” and politics were just some faceless happenstance occurring in the distance. But JFear was in these comments just like Faucci was on CNN- constantly scolding anyone who didn’t mask up. JFear regularly derided anyone who presented facts that didn’t line up with his preferred narrative.
And that is the point. He wants to deny his complicity in wrecking our country. It wasn’t that he was a whiny bitch (whose mewling during 2020 is the reason I dubbed him JFear).
You see, he wasn’t afraid It was just that good people like himself LACKED INFORMATION. And so the US just *Had* to listen to unpopular scapegoats like Weingarten. If only the deplorables had shut up for awhile, JFear and all the other GOOD PEOPLE would have been able to do the right thing. Now let’s put that unfortunate episode behind us, Mmmmkay?
blahblah blahblahblah
Excellent rebuttal.
Well, when someone hands you your ass like Overt did to JFree, there's not really much left that can be said.
Denial is a hell of a drug.
Overt has you dead to rights as they say.
I mean, for a guy who tries to look smart and wailed about lack of information, look at the facts he gets wrong.
1) Libertarians were uninterested in Sweden- FALSE
2) "Everyone" knew that kids were safe early on- FALSE
3) "Just the flu crowd" thought kids didn't think kids were safe- FALSE
4) America did "almost precisely zero research"- False and terrible grammar to boot.
Again, the idea that the US couldn't rely on research performed by other countries is pure idiocy. JFree wants to make a process complaint- "If only the US had given us more data!" We had plenty of data. But he and his people were too busy bitching and vilifying the deplorables to pay attention to it.
I mean, for a guy who tries to look smart and wailed about lack of information, look at the facts he gets wrong.
I’ve noticed a lot of center-right “moderates” cleaving to that excuse recently. “We just didn’t know! There wasn’t enough information out there! This doesn’t mean the experts were wrong.”
Except for when they were, time after time after time–“the experts” being, the US government commissars and their bootlickers in both the media and the general population. The same kind of uncritical “listen and believe” bullshit that said rioting in the summer of 2020 was public health necessity, and that you're anti-science if you don't let them cut off your son's genitals because he thinks he's Elle McPherson.
1) Libertarians were uninterested in Sweden- FALSE
I SAID – Libertarians are uninterested in what Sweden DID. That is 100% TRUE. The sole goal is to use Sweden as an ‘example’ of a laissez-faire approach to covid – which NEVER HAPPENED. To point to what Sweden DIDN’T DO – without the slightest understanding or interest in what actually happened in Sweden. Sweden shut down high schools. They kept elementary schools open. Why the difference? The answer is known but – you assclowns don’t give a shit.
2) “Everyone” knew that kids were safe early on- FALSE 3) “Just the flu crowd” thought kids didn’t think kids were safe- FALSE
Oh golly my bad. ok Everyone who bothered to look at the early data honestly rather than through a lens of looking at covid as if it were flu. Here – a discussion in the comment threads here on Feb 25 2020 specifically re mortality in young for flu (where mortality is higher in the very old AND the very young) v covid. Long before a single school closed.
4) America did “almost precisely zero research”- False and terrible grammar to boot.
We didn’t. Its why we relied almost entirely on Israel when vaccine time came. Why we chose to stop everything re antibody test when that would’ve mattered in 2020. Why nearly all CDC advisories refer to studies done elsewhere rather than the US.
Now you just sound like some crank defending the confederacy.
blahblah blahblahblah
You’re a regular Christopher Hitchens, aren’t you?
"I SAID – Libertarians are uninterested in what Sweden DID."
And what you SAID is in fact BULLSHIT. There are tons of articles, and people in the comments debating the approaches of Sweden.
"The sole goal is to use Sweden as an ‘example’ of a laissez-faire approach to covid – which NEVER HAPPENED."
Read that everybody? Thousands of people talking about Sweden. Tons of comments, scores of articles, over three goddamn years, and JFear is confident summarizing all those opinions, and all that interest as not being the CORRECT type of interest.
Sure, I can do a quick search on for "sweden schools" and we find libertarians talking specifically about how the Swedish model of schools contrasts to the US Model. For example:
https://reason.com/2022/09/06/new-data-show-covid-school-closures-contributed-to-largest-learning-loss-in-decades/
But let's cut to the chase here before you try worming around and re-parsing and re-interpreting the words that you plainly said, or try to litigate the timing of articles, or the authors: You were wrong. There are many articles like the one above, and hundreds of comments discussing this.
I've been watching you for 3 years now, JFear. This is your MO. You are such a narcissist that you don't question ANY thought that pops into your head. Like some 22 year old just out of college, you think your every brain fart is wisdom, and don't pause even a second to question whether you might be wrong. And so you make crazy statements like "Libertarians aren't interested in Sweden" or comically misread a climate graph and try to argue with me on that misinterpretation.
"The answer is known but – you assclowns don’t give a shit."
And this is your next tactic- "You idiot [assclowns|mises caucus|goldhoarders|crypto-geek|meanies] just can't understand my vast logic!"
There are tons of articles, and people in the comments debating the approaches of Sweden.
No. There are tons of people yapping about some hypothetical laissez-faire approach to covid (or just ignoring covid altogether) while mentioning 'Sweden'. Just because you say the word 'Sweden' doesn't mean what you say happened actually happened. Your tactic is deceit and deflection like everything from that caucus.
Yes Schools (including hundreds of elementary) WERE closed in Sweden. You people don't give a shit about what actually happened in Sweden. Only your simpleminded narrative.
Wow, you still trying to dig out of that giant hole Overt put you in?
Sometimes knowing when to quit is the greatest bit of knowledge one can have.
"No. There are tons of people yapping about some hypothetical laissez-faire approach to covid (or just ignoring covid altogether) while mentioning ‘Sweden’. "
My god, JFear, you are really bad at this. Do you really think people won't go read the article I posted and see that what you are stating is an obvious line of bullshit?
"Your tactic is deceit and deflection like everything from that caucus."
Projection is pretty bad here. You are the one who made the silly statement that libertarians weren't interested in Sweden. And when you were called on it, you try to distract by insisting that libertarians were not interested in the RIGHT stuff.
What a mess of a conversation with you here. If you want people to take you seriously, I highly recommend taking a few minutes before you click that "submit" button, and asking yourself "Do I really know that this is true, or am I just stating this because it feeeeelz right?"
You are creating strawmen. Worthless piece of shit tactic. So typical of your ilk. Goodbye
At least you learned to finally give up. Did it as pathetically as possible, but you did it.
"You are creating strawmen."
Episode #1 Bajillion of JFear just confidently stating stuff that isn't true. A strawman is when a person creates a caricatured argument and beats it up. I didn't make up an argument. I quoted his own words.
"One might imagine that libertarians would be interested in what Sweden did – but nope."
If anyone was making strawman arguments, it was JFear, when he tried to render the many-faceted discussions of Libertarians down to "tons of people yapping about some hypothetical laissez-faire approach to covid (or just ignoring covid altogether) while mentioning ‘Sweden’."
THAT is a strawman- he doesn't bother to substantiate anything of what he wrote (just as he didn't try to substantiate libertarian disinterest in Sweden)- he just declares that libertarians solely made a "laissez-faire" argument, and beats the shit out of that made up position.
JFear is in rare form this week.
Revisionist history is pathetic chicken little. It was the people you were fighting against here posting the evidence of low transmission in kids, how masks didn't work, etc. Just fucking yesterday you continued to claims masks work against viruses. Fuck off.
In May 2020, it was probably mostly libertarians who were interested in what Sweden did about Covid.
The "team blue" MSM was pushing a narrative that made it sound like bodies were being stacked waist-deep in the streets of Stockholm and CNN had Andrew Cuomo's little brother polishing his balls for him on primetime 3 times a week in celebration of his luminary example of how to be a proper leader in a pandemic.
Never mind that if you overlay the infection/death curves for the NYC area vs the entire nation of Sweden (to get comparable total population) for the respective first 3-4 months of being "hit by the virus" (there's an offset in the start dates), the shapes of both curves are essentially the same, except that the magnitude of both rates in NYC which was on hard lockdown for pretty much the whole time is something like 4-5X the magnitude in Sweden, where there wasn't even a government imposed mask mandate in place.
You’re going to hurt JFears feelings with that talk!
I understand libertarians were interested in trying to find SOME approach to covid that wasn't the same as what California or NYC was doing. Nothing wrong with that at all.
But jeezus h freakin krist. Using 'Sweden' as your supposed evidence was - an obviously bs comparison. Sweden peep density = 65 peeps per square mile; NYC peep density = 29,302 peeps per square mile. You don't see any obvious difference re some respiratory disease transmission?
Of course not. Sweden was chosen to fit some philosophical narrative. Sweden the symbol or totem. It's why yall had no interest in what happened in Sweden the country. Which was one - of MANY - approaches to covid -- interesting only to those who gave a shit about finding out what was happening in other countries re the 'covid experiment'.
That wouldn't really be a problem early on in May 2020. Many actions then were basically speculative and based on hopium. That's how crises tend to unfold.
But your ilks use of Sweden as symbol - rather than any sincere interest in how things are unfolding elsewhere - is what eliminated both your own ability to LEARN and the philosophy's ability to influence actions/decisions. By early July 2020, there was a lot more information/research from around the world re schools and covid and kids being published.
A timeframe which could have been very useful for libertarians getting involved in reopening schools by August 2020. But yall still weren't interested at that time in anything beyond arguments about symbolic narratives/countries, pretending that Floyd riots were causing new outbreaks in red states, and a Trump/Biden election, while sucking on the public teat of covid.
And in this post, JFree acknowledges that libertarians were interested in Sweden, but they were coming to the wrong conclusions.
This is what it is like to argue with JFear:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMz7JBRbmNo
Truly he has a dizzying intellect.
There's no denying that population density factored into the differences, but 87-88% of the people in Sweden live in major cities, they're not all evenly spaced out over the land area of the country. Probably no cities in Sweden compare to NYC in density, but they're also hardly living 65 to a square mile in Stockholm, Gothenburg, or Malmo.
The real point is that the way the US media was covering it, you'd have thought that every third Swede was coughing up blood in the street while NYC was somehow relatively unscathed (while simultaneously running out of body bags and calling in refrigerated trucks to use as makeshift morgues).
When the governor of GA was the first to announce an end to forced business closures in his state after only 6 weeks of being shut down, the Atlantic headline read "Experiments in Human Sacrifice" even though that was the initial duration that had been sold to the public as the duration which would be needed to "flatten the curve".
Among those who "believe the science", how many Dems actually believed that the Covid virus could have been eliminated from the planet if only everyone wold "obey the experts" aggressively enough? Or if everyone would just get vaccinated? For a virus which they also believed had originated from animals, was the plan also to vaccinate all of the world's bats, an pangolins, and dogs, and deer, and rats, and every other species of mammal that has been found to be carrying the virus? Why did so many believe that the Covid virus somehow spread only via surfaces, when no other strain of coronavirus has ever spread that way? Why did anyone at WHO even think that the idea would have any credibility of a virus which was known to infect through the nose and into deep lung tissue wasn't airborne, and how did that idea gain traction without being denounced by actual virologists immediately?
Prior to Covid, nearly every virologist on the planet would have said that in general, respiratory viruses are almost incapable of spreading outdoors because of constantly moving air combined with how quickly UV rays in sunlight kill the viruses themselves. Why would any person who "believes in science" have thought that the CA response to covid of immediately closing all parks, hiking trails, and beaches and ordering tens of millions of people to stay locked inside through three straight months of warm and sunny weather was a good idea by any stretch of imagination?
Don't bother, BG. If there are any nuances to the data, JFear will attempt to crucify you with them by attributing an argument you never made. That is, unless the data contraindicates his arguments, at which point you are a nave and a scoundrel for bringing it up.
https://reason.com/video/2023/05/03/how-disinformation-became-public-enemy-no-1/
the schools were given $190 billion but really needed $750 billion to reopen
They would need $0 to re-open if they never closed. But that would put a damper on the union's extortion racket.
It wasn't thoroughly proven at the time, but US schools didn't actually NEED any significant funding to re-open safely, because everything they eventually spent the money on (unless they improved classroom ventilation/outside air circulation, but opening a window usually isn't particularly expensive) turned out to really have done fuck-all in terms of helping with Covid safety.
UTLA ran a years-long billboard campaign in the poorer "minority" neighborhoods proclaiming that they were "fighting for student safety" while the result of their efforts was to keep schools closed for more than three consecutive semesters, except as pickup locations for free meals for the (by their estimate) 40% of students/families who would otherwise be unable to feed themselves even with SNAP and welfare benefits. If LAUSD taught reading and math as relentlessly as they teach dependence on the government as a lifestyle, their HS diplomas would be good for guaranteed admission to every US University plus Oxford and Sorbonne.
See, once all the teachers had no more student loan debt, they could spend that money on masks instead. Don't you even SCIENCE?
You know why this bitch is trying to revise history just a couple of short years or less after all this went down? Because she knows that eventually the media will start parroting her claims as fact and insert a Grand Canyon's worth of qualifiers to "fact checks" of pieces providing direct quotes and video showing what she actually said.
Thankfully, a lot of red states ignored this shit, put in basic safety measures as mitigation, and told teachers to suck it up and get back to the classroom, or else, and school boards in those states that tried to keep restrictions maxed out got their asses booted.
Fact checkers only check the facts that they are paid to.
And then they produce the facts they were asked for.
Several public health officials, politicians, and bureaucratic department heads are re-writing history as to their actions during the Covid pandemic. Even "Mr. Science" himself Tony Fauci. However, when it comes to the harm caused to children and their educational needs, Ms. Weingarten's actions caused the most damage.
As noted, her demands that teacher's student loans be canceled had nothing to do with safely reopening schools. As with most Covid-dictators actions, most were taken to increase their power and the balances in their checking accounts.
All for a virus that had a miniscule effect on children even if they caught the virus. Too many people think the left are just mis-informed when it comes to so many issues and that if they are just shown evidence that their beliefs are incorrect, they will change that position. The mistake is that the left is not misinformed, since they realize what they are doing. They are evil. Pure evil! Their actions are taken to cause harm to others and they delight in executing those actions because it shows they have the power to do so.
The teachers union head honcho is trying to engage in some astonishing revisionism, claiming she actually wasn’t opposed to school reopening.
The most astonishing thing being that, apparently, she’s going it alone this time.
..
Who is she trying to convince? We were there you lying pig.
Let's hear it for the Rehabilitation Tour
It's been an incredible excess
We weren't quite sure, we had a few doubts
Will Randi lie through?
But the answer is yes.
Even in Europe where the regulations aim for "zero risk" the concept is just a proxy for "Anything we don't want to do can be banned because it's not safe." Meanwhile - in the real world - there is no such thing as "zero risk." And even modest decreases in bad outcomes are difficult to demonstrate scientifically as a result of regulatory action. I have yet to read a risk reduction regulation that even mentions the risks incurred in other areas as a result of following the regulations and no one ever seems to go back and check on the unintended consequences of enforcing safety regulations or any kind of cost-benefit analysis. So the teacher unions didn't want to go back to school but wanted to continue benefiting from government largesse while holding non-pandemic-related issues hostage as a condition of their eventual re-opening of the schools. "Zero risk" my Aunt Sally!
Europe doesn't have the tradition of liberalism that we have in the US, but they do seem to be somewhat better at the cost benefit analysis, at least in some of the countries. It may be that the current political climate has something to do with it too, but Americans seem to like to pick a position and stick with it.
but Americans seem to like to pick a position and stick with it.
Fauci: Hold my beer.
You better not insult the holy god of science!
I will give forgiveness after these bastards
1-Perform an examination of conscience
2-Publicly and sincerely apologize, without attempting to excuse, for their actions, acknowledging wrongdoing and admitting they do not deserve forgiveness
3-resign from their position in shame and resolve never to hold public office again
4- Make reparations for their wrongdoing
Any less and they don’t mean it.
Sounds about right. This shit must not be forgotten or forgiven without sincere moves to prevent similar fiascos in the future.
They’re not asking for forgiveness, they’re asking for Amnesty. They’re two different concepts.
edit: To be sure, in the VENN diagram of "forgiveness" and "amnesty" there is some overlap. Most of that overlap exists in the zone of "you won't go to jail". After that...
The gas lighting of JFear above is a perfect example. They just want you to understand that The System was the problem. Bad information was out there, or they didn't have enough good information, and god damnit if those damn deplorables weren't out there making it all about politics. That was the real problem- those people disagreeing with them so loud that they couldn't even think straight!
They're offering "amnesty" for those who they called "mass murderers" for opposing mask mandates in exchange for being let off the hook for emotionally and intellectually crippling 10-20 million kids with their constant fearmongering though. By the end of 2020, most CNN viewers actually believed the overall hospitalization rate for everyone infected with Covid was 50% or higher, but doctors stating in public that Hydroxycloriquine (sold OTC in something like 80 countries where malaria is rampant) doesn't have any significant side effects were the ones spreading "misinformation".
Don't expect to get any kind of "mea culpa" if you ever got shouted down or censored for distributing actual data online while CDC was trying to suppress it, though. All that was supposed to go down the memory hole, and they would've got away with it if it weren't for that meddling Elon Musk and his gang of "so-called journalists".
And whatever you do, don't question why the CA Dept of Public Health split from "following CDC guidance" at the exact moment that the CDC acknowledged the truth about the actual data on masking effectiveness.
Is there anything the left isn't a) wrong about b) going to pretend they were never wrong about.
Oceana is at war with EastAsia and has always been at war with EastAsia. It must have been agents of Goldstien who put up all the anti-EurAsia banners around town for Hate Week.
Also, just be grateful that your chocolate ration was increased to 20g this week, and anyone who tells you it was 30g last week is spreading Russian (make that Chinese) propaganda....
"eighth-graders' average math scores fell in all 50 states minus one"
That's a feature, not a bug. The goal is for every identity group to get the same average score. It doesn't matter how low it is as long as there's equity.
Was Florida that one state?
People knowing math is the enemy of "progressive" economics.
Once you learn about second-order and third-order effects, it's hard to buy into any plan that's based on creating inflation as a means to reduce inequality.
The lack of remorse for the harm caused the children and families is stunning and can only be described as being connected to something evil.
The entire 2020 year was an exercise in mass hysteria.
2016 on has been a constant decade of mass hysteria.
This is the same Weingarten who asked for “amnesty” a few months ago. Amnesty pretty much = forgiveness. If you haven’t done anything wrong, why ask for forgiveness? Her request was tantamount to a confession. Which makes her current statements straight up lies.
Why hasn’t anyone else pointed out this inconsistency?
That wasn't Weingarten, that was some chick at The Atlantic.
Some leftist writer--i think it was Naomi Klein--actually did come out and say, paraphrasing "you know what, I was completely wrong about all of this, and I'm really sorry for all the harm my support for these policies caused." Everyone else is trying to pretend that we were always at war with Eurasia.
I believe you are thinking of Emily Oster, who was actually somewhat kind of a decent COVID person, who tried softly pushing back on the Blue Crazy.
"Because of the decentralized structure of America's public-education system"
But if there's one union to run them all, is it really decentralized? It seems to be a thing people don't get. By and large the unions are national, not local regardless of the moniker.
Note that I say that as president of the Muff Divers Union, Local 69. We dive at 5.
This article is largely based on the pushback that happened in Twitter.
Community Notes is a new feature of the Musk era, designed to do what the left has been screaming that they want... Fight disinformation. In the last few weeks it has worked wonderfully. This case was perhaps the pinnacle. Not only did the Union Boss get fact-checked in real time,so did politifact. The voting process to evaluate the notes apparently strives for a variety of viewpoints to be represented among the voters.
This is the real reason the left and the press are so apoplectic over Musk being at twitter.theyprefera monoculture that caters to their worldview
"This is the real reason the left and the press are so apoplectic over Musk being at twitter.theyprefera monoculture that caters to their worldview"
That's a funny way to describe 'he's getting in the way of their propaganda, which was previously completely unchecked'
Yeah, that is exactly what that means.....
Except I am kinda surprised to learn just how important getting *every* possible outlet is.
That could also help explain Fox self-immolating by dumping their top draw and the only guy on major platforms with a dissident voice. Greenwald has a whole bunch to say on that angle. Megyn Kelly seems to agree. As does Tim Poole and Crowder.
Oh look, Reason finally has a pandemic section... 3 YEARS TOO LATE. Where were you when it mattered?! This is why the "libertarian" movement and party are dead. Just a bunch of closet liberals and leftists.
Great article, Mike. I appreciate your work, I’m now creating over $35,400 dollars each month simply by doing a simple job online! I do know You currently making a lot of greenbacks online from $28,400 dollars, its simple online operating jobs.
