Trump's Facebook and Instagram Accounts To Be Reinstated

Plus: Massie vs. McCarthy?, Hawley bill would ban TikTok in the U.S., and more...

Meta announced yesterday that it will restore former President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts, following his January 2021 suspension from both platforms. The reinstatement will happen "in coming weeks," Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg said yesterday.

Trump was suspended from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in the wake of the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. New Twitter CEO Elon Musk reinstated Trump's Twitter account last November, though Trump has yet to return to the platform.

The decision to restore Trump's accounts has outraged many who hoped the suspensions would be permanent. And perhaps if Trump were simply fading into MAGA grifter land, doing so would make sense for Meta. But he is not. Rather, Trump is running for president again in 2024.

While Trump has no shortage of ways to get his message out—including on the Trump-branded Truth Social, where he now posts—exclusion from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter would still deprive the 2024 candidate of a chance to spread his election messaging more widely.

(Whether that helps or hurts him shouldn't factor into reinstatement decisions. But for what it's worth, people who assume that it can only help may be mistaken. In the past couple of years, Trump's erratic antics seem to have lost some luster among some moderate and conservative segments, while fringier elements no longer think he goes far enough. So it's possible that giving Trump more of a voice on mainstream platforms could actually work against him.)

"We've always believed that Americans should be able to hear from the people who want to lead the country," Clegg told Axios. "We don't want to stand in the way of that."

That's the patriotic spin, which serves as a nice corollary to Musk's free speech rationale. There may also be more self-motivated reasons for Meta and Twitter to reinstate Trump, of course. To keep Trump off of the biggest and most mainstream social media platforms would spur more accusations of liberal bias at tech companies. And, if things don't go Trump's way, it serves as an eternal excuse to claim that the whole system was rigged against him.

So, as much as I hate the idea of Trump's whims and words dictating basically every news cycle again, I think that Meta is making the right call.

Of course, it's also inviting a world of trouble.

"We just do not want — if he is to return to our services — for him to do what he did on January 6, which is to use our services to delegitimize the 2024 election, much as he sought to discredit the 2020 election," Clegg said, detailing to Axios a range of ways that Meta might limit the reach of Trump posts that cross a line:

Trump will be subject to new policies around restricting accounts by public figures during civil unrest. Under those policies, Meta can decide to restrict the account of a public figure that violates its community standards for a time ranging from one month to two years….

For actions or speech that don't explicitly violate Meta's community standards, Clegg said the company will retain discretion to take action, and may enforce different types of guardrails, including limiting the distribution of posts without removing them or temporarily restricting access to its advertising tools.

  • "Oblique references to QAnon content, for instance … is the kind of material that — even if it's done obliquely, and doesn't violate our community standards — we would seek to restrict the distribution of the content and/or restrict his ability to advertise," he said.
  • These steps would allow content to remain visible on Trump's account but not get distributed in users' feeds, even for those that follow the former president.
  • For example, Meta may opt to remove the "re-share" button from such posts, and may stop them from being recommended or run as ads.

If—or when, let's be honest—Trump violates Meta's policies, the company will face an insane amount of scrutiny in its handling of these violations.

Failure to limit misinformation from Trump will surely get Meta (and Twitter) in trouble with Democrats, while any actions to restrict his message will curry the wrath of Republicans. When it comes to Trump, there's really no way for social media platforms to win.

Massie vs. McCarthy? Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie talks about what it means that he'll be on the powerful House Rules Committee along with two other members of the House Freedom Caucus, Reps. Chip Roy (R–Texas) and Ralph Norman (R–S.C.):

Excellent @byrdinator look at what the secondment of the GOP rebels to the Powerful Rules Committee™️ means in practice.https://t.co/bZVMtLHCOc

"The Rules panel directs floor debate on legislation and is the most heavily stacked in favor of the majority party: The breakdown last Congress was nine Democrats to four Republicans," notes The Dispatch. "This Congress it's reversed: nine Republicans to four Democrats. That math translates to a majority to reject GOP leaders' plans if the two Freedom Caucus members and Massie join Democrats to vote against anything."

Or they think being seen as partisan shills owned by a party that hates both the company and half their users is dumb and bad for their shareprice now that the collusion is proven.

      1. Overt   2 years ago

I think it is something close to this.

ENB hewing closer to "principles of free expression mean we should give platform access to all candidates (even trump), even if they are private platforms." And Meta and Youtube, etc etc, all re-instating Trump.

None of this would have happened if Musk hadn't exposed just how closely the Government and BigTech were working together.

        1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago (edited)

Again, my problem is that they are documented to be in bed with the government, and just released new terms of service for “public figures” that do not apply solely to Trump. They’ve just expanded the degree to which they’re censoring people without any sign that it’s not at the behest of the government, with no promises that they won’t allow the government to weaponize this against anyone who has something bad to say against the government.

The big story here isn’t “Trump returns to Facebook,” it’s “Facebook, mired in a censorship scandal, vows to censor certain people harder.”

If Trump was elected, there would be a weekly impeachment inquiry by the leftists; beginning one day after inauguration.

        1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

That’s now become a permanent feature of our national government. The opposition party will always be trying to investigate and impeach the sitting President, whether it is a Republican or a Democrat.

But you know what? Trump could avoid a lot of his legal problems if he would consider acting like a decent, honorable human being.

          1. JesseAz   2 years ago

            Cite?

          2. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

Yes. Because the very first thing that the congressional GOP did was start impeachment proceedings against Joe Bi... wait a second.

            1. Overt   2 years ago

Isn't it hilarious how the shills have pivoted on this story? Once impeachment is a bad thing, it is a "both sides" problem with the SYSTEM. Not the democrats who are the only ones on record doing constant impeachment. No, they are just hapless passengers on an out of control train with no control over their fate.

              1. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

And there's nothing near an equivalence in both parties' willingness to use impeachment.

Democrats impeached Nixon, filed articles of impeachment against Reagan, Bush 41, impeached Bush 43, and then filed for impeachment of Trump 15 different times.

In contrast, Republicans filed no articles of impeachment for Kennedy, LBJ, Carter, then impeached Clinton. They did hold a hearing in 2013 regarding Obama's liberal usage of executive authority and whether he was usurping legislative power. There may have been popular calls to impeach Obama but no articles were ever filed. There was never a bill or House Resolution.

So the Democratic Party has had resolutions to impeach 5 of the last 6 Republican presidents (Ford being the sole exception) and the Republicans Party has filed resolutions to impeach 1 of the last 5 Democratic Presidents (not counting Biden, who would make 6). If you want to claim that repeatedly moving to impeach the President is a major disruption of government, you can't "both sides" it. One side is abusing that power more consistently and repeatedly than the other.

Id say a VP knowingly taking classified information he doesn't have the ability to declassify is more impeachable than what Trump was impeached for.

If the house does nothing for the next two years but block dem bills and investigate the Biden's, it will be a couple years well spent. And also just a fraction of the time and investigations into Trump as well.

            Fair is fair

            1. Nardz   2 years ago

There was nothing legitimate about the impeachments of Trump.

              1. Mother's Lament   2 years ago

Trump was probably the first politician ever to be impeached twice on the basis of evidence that completely exonerated him.

                1. Idaho Bob   2 years ago

There's the irony the left chooses to ignore.

"Id say a VP knowingly taking classified information he doesn’t have the ability to declassify is more impeachable than what Trump was impeached for."

As I have said before, and I realize you haven't seen all my comments, I don't think the DoJ should pursue charges against Trump or Biden for their taking classified documents home. I started saying this well before the documents were discovered in Biden's home.

"If the house does nothing for the next two years but block dem bills and investigate the Biden’s, it will be a couple years well spent."

No, it will not be well spent. There are serious issues, such as impending insolvency of Social Security and Medicare, that need to be addressed.

              1. McGuffin   2 years ago

Biden and the left claimed it was irresponsible and Trump should be indicted. I suggest we stick to their standards, and both can be charged.

One of them of course, actually broke the law

                1. Mike Laursen   2 years ago

I suggest we don’t stick to their standards and move on, without further feeding the Red vs. Blue culture war.

They really don't need to, the 'editors' have social media accounts, and their biases come out very clearly in their writing. ENB managed to, as they all do, make social media violations to ToS and standards a purely trump/right-wing issue. The expectation that her in-group has, that they will not be accountable for the same, or worse behaviors as libertarians or conservatives is endemic.

You were downright ecstatic every time you could find some mildly negative economic news from 2017 to 2019. You acted like Sam's Club closing a few stores proved the entire economy was in the toilet. Because what really upset you was Hillary missing that layup in 2016.

But now that your party is back in control, you pretend it's bad manners to criticize the economy? Whatever. Everyone here knows if Republicans still held the White House you'd be spamming that Reuters link about how bad 2022 was.

“Low effort” replies are appropriate for when dealing with narcissist personalities such as his. Don’t feel the troll, slay it.

There are some circumstances where ad hominem is actually appropriate. Buttplug and Misek are the prime examples. Some people are so foul they dont deserve civil argumentation.

I would say the other scenario is parody accounts. It was always funny to watch some newb unknowingly go off on a tirade against an OBL post, not knowing its purpose

    https://www.spiked-online.com/2023/01/25/furries-vs-feminists-a-new-nadir-for-the-trans-lobby/

Next month, followers of what is known as the ‘furry fandom’ will descend on Glasgow for the ‘ScotiaCon’ convention, Scotland’s leading get-together for furries. Furries are people who identify with and often dress as anthropomorphised cartoon animals. At a glance, you could be forgiven for thinking that furries were children’s entertainers. But please, don’t try to book one for your kid’s birthday party.

    1. Earth-based Human Skeptic   2 years ago

I once was setting up a tech convention booth while the prior convention was packing up. The prior convention was a furry convention. Calling me un-Woke but damn those people gotta problem! One artist was taking down his booth where he did custom portraits of furry's characters. If female every one had massive breasts, if male every one had massive raging erections. And the next booth over that was packing up was selling... wait for it... animal dildos. Biologically accurate shaped dildos of various animal species. Except for the dragon dildo.

So yeah, these people really do get off on fantasies of animals. And many really do identify as their animal. The kind of identity the identitarian Wokesters mean when they say "identity". So expect the Furry brigade to be playing a political Woke card sometime soon.

    More on Buttplug's sugar daddy.

    https://nypost.com/2023/01/25/how-george-soros-funds-fact-checkers-to-silence-dissent/

It’s not enough for George Soros to fund the media and encourage stories that back up his point of view — he has to make sure no one disagrees with it.

As is the case with Soros’ financing of media, in addition to spreading leftist narratives, he buys his own name protection. A simple search for Soros’ name on PolitiFact’s website reveals that they’re unwilling to admit a single damning allegation made against the man — of which there are many.

Trump will be subject to new policies around restricting accounts by public figures during civil unrest. Under those policies, Meta can decide to restrict the account of a public figure that violates its community standards for a time ranging from one month to two years….

Say, wasn't Reason recently covering a story about how Facebook is being pressured by the government to make certain decisions about censorship? Do you think it's a problem that Facebook is putting extra pressure to censor what is allowable discourse coming from public figures, when "public figures" is a vaguely defined class? Public figures also have 1st Amendment rights, and Meta's new policies surely affect more than just Donald Trump. Do you have any questions about how much power Meta might be giving to the federal government to censor people criticizing the government?

The decision to restore Trump's accounts has outraged many who hoped the suspensions would be permanent. And perhaps if Trump were simply fading into MAGA grifter land, doing so would make sense for Meta.

See, this is the problem. We don't know if Meta's decision-making is based upon what is best for Meta. It could be that Meta's decision-making is based upon what the government has said Meta needs to do if they want to avoid being punished, using them as a proxy to censor bad people. The CDC using Facebook as its censorship wing hasn't even fallen out of the news cycle yet, so it feels like you're really missing something when you mention a story about a new Facebook censorship policy for public figures that doesn't mention the donkey in the room.

  37. A Cynical Asshole   2 years ago

I do remember the Gulf War... who was driving those tanks, who trained those crews, what country was supporting them, and what infrastructure did those tanks come with to effectively operate in Iraq?

      2. A Thinking Mind   2 years ago

That's the problem, though, isn't it? I doubt we're just going to send tanks, we're going to have to send replacement parts, we're probably going to have to send instructional material, maybe even actual tank instructors. We're sending them ammunition, probably DU AP shells, and we're going to need to keep the supply line going.

And when those 30 tanks are knocked out action, then what? Will we send 200 more?

        1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

If you bothered to read anything about the subject you might know that the new crews will receive standard training, ammo, and the different tanks (Abrams, Leopard 2 and Challenger 2) all have different ammo and supply chains. Reading is cool. Gives your mind something to think about.

          1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

There's a difference between new training and having worked with the equipment day-in and day-out for years. For the new crews, none of the tank will be second nature as it would be for a seasoned crew.

            1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

You're moving the goalposts. The comment I was responding to clearly implied that there would be minimal to zero training.

              1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

Not moving any goalposts at all - merely furthering the discussion. Maybe they'll master the tanks quickly. Maybe not. But new training is a bit different than a seasoned crew.

                1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Regardless I'm sure they'll get better training than the Russian conscripts they're going up against. If I was capable of feelings (obviously I'm not or I wouldn't be a libertarian) I'd feel really bad for the tens of thousands of Russian kids being sent to certain death.

                  1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

Hopefully. Two new crews going up against each other isn't exactly a recipe for a curb-stomp victory on either side.

                    1. sarcasmic   2 years ago (edited)

The newer tanks are more maneuverable, are better able to shoot while moving, and have a longer range. It’s not quite “Philadelphia Experiment” with F14s against Zeros, but I’d argue that the latest generation of tanks can curb-stop the Russian post-Vietnam Cold War relics with equally trained crews.

            2. sarcasmic   2 years ago

Right....how is this at all a refutation of anything I just said? We're clearly not just mailing them tanks and letting them walk. Basically nobody else can use the Abrams without US funding because it runs on jet fuel and it takes massive economical support to use a tank that guzzles up that much valuable fuel. So the choice to send these to the Ukraine is a massive commitment. It's weird to claim that this isn't an escalation considering all the logistical support the US will be sending to allow them to operate these tanks, not to mention the months of training.

            1. sarcasmic   2 years ago

We’re clearly not just mailing them tanks and letting them walk.

Potential WW3 over hillary's hurt feelings and a handful of anti-Russia hawks seems like a bad step.

They can certify a crew for an Abrams tank in what, a six hour training session and field driving test?

Most likely overseen by "military advisors" and trainers. Because that's always how it starts: a few "advisors" to train them on how to use the hardware we're shipping them, then next thing you know we're operating the advanced equipment for them, and not long after that we've deployed several thousand troops to fight their war for them because "inside every gook Ukrainian there is an American trying to get out."

Failure to limit misinformation from Trump will surely get Meta (and Twitter) in trouble with Democrats, while any actions to restrict his message will curry the wrath of Republicans.

    Right, it's just a binary.

Just so you know, while the above statement is "technically true", which as we know is the best kind of true, it's an incredibly shallow assessment.

In my various social media feeds and listening profiles-- people/thinkers/pundits/journalists I follow, somewhere near to almost zero of them are Republicans, and a statistically significant portion of them are self described lefties, some of them could even be considered on the "far left". We already know that they are making nakedly partisan decisions about what to promote and what to suppress, and we already know that this is not any sort of "organic" process, but that it is being directed out of a bunch of 3 letter agencies, who are in turn acting beyond their legal authority and without directive from the executive.

The Twitter files document this quite clearly, and more, our observations of what happened with the Biden laptop story confirms that this control was extended not just beyond Twitter to Facebook and Google and Apple.... But also to CNN and The NYT and ABC and NBC and, and..... Basically every major news outlet was complicit.

They all lied. They all told the same lies. At the same time. Using the same words. Lies that were quite easy to debunk.

So why are we pretending that we don't know this? Why are we pretending that there is some controversial pressure on these companies and that there is not actually any evidence of bias in these companies, let alone anything implicating free speech?

It makes no sense. That ship has sailed. We have the receipts. It was blindingly obvious before, but Elon Musk blew all the questions away with the evidence. We know what they are doing.

There are people that still believe the Hunter laptop was a Russian op. Where did they learn that?

The entities that were trying to prevent disinformation were the ones actually spreading it.

I think that Meta is making the right call. Of course, it's also inviting a world of trouble.

    a WORLD of trouble!

    1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

A world, or a Globe.com, or a MySpace of trouble?

    2. Mickey Rat   2 years ago

Being threatened by Big Brother is definitely serious trouble.

Some tell me it's ridiculous to reference the spiritual, to notice when your opponent is doing something demonic

Then they honor their own heroes like this, and I wonder which one of us is being ridiculous

Failure to limit misinformation from Trump will surely get Meta (and Twitter) in trouble with Democrats, while any actions to restrict his message will curry the wrath of Republicans.

There's been lots of bombast from Trump, but precious little misinformation.

In fact, over the course of the last two years the trend seems to have been that everything the left CALLS misinformation turns out to be true, and everything the left says is true turns out to be misinformation.

    1. McGuffin   2 years ago

Also, the very famous 'fake news' insult Trump threw at CNN...which they (and the MSM) proclaimed was just his way of lying about the truth...was completely merited.

CNN and their hacks were reporting on the buzzfeed shit, Steele dossier, and pee-tape tabloid news as if it was definitely true, and Trump rightly called them out as lying propagandists.

They gave him endless shit about this, but he was 100% correct on these issues.

      1. Derp-o-Matic 6000   2 years ago

Given the way everything else has turned out, at this point, I'll be more surprised if there's not a Rusdian hooker piss tape featuring either a Biden or someone high-profile in the FBI/CIA.

        1. InsaneTrollLogic   2 years ago

Well, Hunter Biden used to record a lot of crap on his laptops (yes, plural - the NYPost got their hands on one of three we know about). It is highly possible that something got recorded on one of the other two we know about (and are in the hands of Biden's DOJ).

          1. McGuffin   2 years ago

Hunter having a hooker pee tape is probably 100x more likely to have happened.

            1. Outlaw Josey Wales   2 years ago

Probably what spawned the original idea to make it Trump instead.

Projection like that from these guys wouldn’t exactly surprise me anymore. Damn near (if not all) everything they accuse Trump of doing, they themselves have done.

      2. Mike Laursen   2 years ago (edited)

Trump has thrown accusations of “fake news” around way more than those few examples. And definitely not limited to where it was merited.

There is a small silent Hungarian genocide going on in Ukraine Transcarpathia which is not reported by western Media. Fighting-age Hungarians (minority population) are being forced with violence into conscription in order to be used as cannon fodder in Donbass.

    1. Chumby   2 years ago

That is happening in other places of Ukraine to all ethnicities.

We just have the election fraud minus the forced conscriptions.

No, it means it will call you names for supporting freedom and capitalism, raise your taxes to pay for useless but expensive subsidies and programs, and attempt to seize government power.
