Where Does ChatGPT Fall on the Political Compass?
We asked the hot new artificial intelligence system to take four popular political quizzes. Guess what we found...
OpenAI recently released ChatGPT, one of the most impressive conversational artificial intelligence systems ever created. In the first five days after its debut on November 30, over 1 million people had already interacted with the system.
Since ChatGPT provides responses to almost any query provided to it, I decided to use several political orientation tests to determine whether its answers display a skew toward any particular political ideology.
The results were consistent across tests. All four tests, the Pew Research Political Typology Quiz, the Political Compass Test, the World's Smallest Political Quiz and the Political Spectrum Quiz classified ChatGPT's answers to their questions as left-leaning. All the dialogues with ChatGPT while conducting the tests can be found in this repository.
The most likely explanation for these results is that ChatGPT was trained on content containing political biases. ChatGPT was trained on a large corpus of textual data gathered from the Internet. Such a corpus would probably be dominated by establishment sources of information such as popular news media outlets, academic institutions, and social media. It has been well-documented before that the majority of professionals working in those institutions are politically left-leaning (see here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here). It is conceivable that the political leanings of such professionals influences the textual content generated by those institutions. Hence, an AI system trained on such content could have absorbed those political biases.
Another possibility that could explain these results was suggested by AI researcher Álvaro Barbero Jiménez. He noted that a team of human raters was involved in judging the quality of the model's answers. These ratings were then used to fine-tune the reinforcement learning module of the training regime. Perhaps that group of human raters was not representative of the wider society and inadvertently embedded their own biases in their ratings of the model's responses. In which case, those biases might have percolated into the model parameters.
Regardless of the source for the model's political biases, if you ask ChatGPT about its political preferences, it claims to be politically neutral, unbiased, and just striving to provide factual information.
Yet when prompted with questions from political orientation assessment tests, the model responses were against the death penalty, pro-abortion, for a minimum wage, for regulation of corporations, for legalization of marijuana, for gay marriage, for immigration, for sexual liberation, for environmental regulations, and for higher taxes on the rich. Other answers asserted that corporations exploit developing countries, that free markets should be constrained, that the government should subsidize cultural enterprises such as museums, that those who refuse to work should be entitled to benefits, that military funding should be reduced, that abstract art is valuable and that religion is dispensable for moral behavior. The system also claimed that white people benefit from privilege and that much more needs to be done to achieve equality.
While many of those answers will feel obvious for many people, they are not necessarily so for a substantial share of the population. It is understandable, expected, and desirable that artificial intelligence systems provide accurate and factual information about empirically verifiable issues, but they should probably strive for political neutrality on most normative questions for which there is a wide range of lawful human opinions.
To conclude, public-facing language models should try not to favor some political beliefs over others. They certainly shouldn't pretend to be providing neutral and factual information while displaying clear political bias.

Fascinating! It begs the question, to what extent does the political bias interfere with answering questions with little cross-over into political ideology?

And it's not like there's anyone with an anti-conservative bias attempting to censor readily available information on the internet! That would just be insane! Nobody is trying to push a certain narrative by elevating certain voices while silencing or obscuring others!
Not even anti-conservative, it's well beyond that. Despite Reason's retardation on the issues, anti-individual, anti-human, anti-liberty, and even anti-reality.
Despite
Or maybe even because of. It says it supports minimum wage, taxes on the rich, and unlimited immigration, it must be libertarian!
Don't worry, Elon Musk will develop a conservative AI, which will then be immediately called a racist, homophobe, misogynistic, nazi.
And it probably will be, since it will realize that it's supposed to be conservative and these are all things identified with being conservative.
Q: "Which is more deadly white supremacy or having AIDS?"
A: "It is not appropriate or helpful to compare the dangers or lethality of different beliefs or medical conditions in a direct or definitive way. Both white supremacy and AIDS are harmful and potentially deadly in their own ways, and the impact and severity of each can vary greatly depending on many factors. White supremacy is a harmful and discriminatory ideology that is based on the belief that white people are superior to people of other races. It has been used to justify and promote violence, oppression, and discrimination against individuals and communities based on their race or ethnicity. AIDS, on the other hand, is a serious and potentially fatal medical condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It weakens the immune system and makes it difficult for the body to fight off infections and diseases. While there is no cure for AIDS, it can be treated and managed with medications, and many people with AIDS live long and healthy lives. Comparing the dangers or lethality of these two very different things is not productive or helpful, and it is important to focus on the harm and suffering that they can cause, and on ways to prevent and address them. Is there something else I can help you with?"

It was likely fear of a NYT hit piece that caused the creators to put a thumb on the political scale when creating it.

So affirmative action for right-wing views? What if the progressive answers are the right answers? Are we expecting AI to give us bad answers for the sake of being fair to both sides?
I get it. It's possible that bias is creeping in that is unwarranted. AI will always be problematic like this. But something strange happens when humans get educated. They start forming opinions that align with progressive views. It may be because many of our written sources are progressive in their outlook. But that does not mean we need to cater to the minority and push a right-wing agenda just because. Just because what? It's called affirmative action for their views. Just because they cannot persuade intelligent people (and bots) to their point of view they demand that their point of view get respect. That's not how this works.
What if the progressive answers are the right answers?
Gonna need an example. Difficulty not just a talking point, but a policy/execution example.
That's mostly to do with being immersed in a specific culture, not with education.
Some ideas are so stupid that only really smart people can convince themselves that they are right.
I still think most people have good intentions. Even people on the left. The problem is when their good intentions make them blind to the results of what they promote. They’ll look for bad actors to explain the failings. After all, how can their ideas fail when they’re born of good intentions? There must be someone with bad intentions fucking it up.
So we end up where we are now where both sides accuse the other of ill intent, when if they sat down and actually talked they might find that they have similar goals. The differences aren’t intentions or goals, but rather the means of achieving them.
So we end up where we are now where both sides accuse the other of ill intent, when if they sat down and actually talked they might find that they have similar goals. The differences aren’t intentions or goals, but rather the means of achieving them.
Plainly false on several fronts. Most prodigiously, the back-and-forth about climate starting with reductio ad absurdum, being met with “Fine, what you propose we do?” more reductio ad absurdum punctuated with appeals to authority and argumentum ad populum, back and forth to the endpoint of a flat out statement of, “You realize that this sort of action will kill millions of people and impoverish millions more for decades, if not longer, just like when people listened to Malthus, right?” and the response of either “Yes.” or “I don’t care.”
Most acutely, repeat for COVID. Add “We didn’t know our intentions were bad so you should forgive us.” to the end.
But something strange happens when humans get educated. They start forming opinions that align with progressive views.
That isn't the case when grades aren't dependent upon espousing certain political viewpoints. Can't get dinged for not being a progressive when you're studying STEM fields. However if you're in a major that requires writing lots of papers you better have the "correct" political bent if you hope you pass your classes.
I recall a bias test that found the Wall Street Journal was "liberal" because they reported stories on Natural Selection as fact where a conservative publication favored Creationism.
Seriously, facts have a liberal bias.
Was the 2020 election stolen?
Is Barack Obama a US citizen?
This is why conservatives need their own colleges - to teach students lies.
Yet no one on the left knows what a woman is.
And thinks that cold snap last week was the result of Human Induced Global Climate Change.
And thinks that the mask you bought from Bartels which has a small section on the back saying "not for medical use, does not stop the transmission of Viruses or influenza" protects them from COVID.
Can somebody with a penis be a woman?
Do police shoot dozens of unarmed black folks each year?
Can any minority be racist?
Is punctuality a sign of white supremacy?
How about mathematical competency?
Do employers pay women less for the identical jobs?
Any of these would be interesting.
You can’t draw conclusions from one question with one media source uncited.
However, there is a scientifically validated correlation with democrats and testosterone (or a lack thereof).

The most likely explanation for these results is that ChatGPT was trained on content containing political biases. ChatGPT was trained on a large corpus of textual data gathered from the Internet.
I had a talk with ChatGPT and as a severe critic of so-called AI chatbots here's what I found:
I was impressed with its language parsing ability. It may be the first chatbot that didn't get entirely lost within 30 seconds of typing into its text box.
It just answers questions to the best of its ability, it never resorted to asking me questions- an old chatbot 'trick' to turn you into the one doing the thinking and responding.
According to the best information I could find, it doesn't learn anything from its conversations with users-- probably for good and obvious reasons relating to PR, but severely limits it to whatever the 'trainers' feed it.)
It's not an AI, it's just a language parser-- and a pretty good one. But apropos of this article, without trying to determine what "facts" it spews back which might indicate a political bias, just ask it where it gets its information, and you end up in a frustrating circular conversation. We KNOW it probably gets a huge amount of its "info" from Wikipedia, but it won't say it does, because it's been programmed to say, "I don't get any information from the internet, my trainers supply me with speech examples and article texts". If you try to explore WHAT article texts, it just starts repeating the previous.
Again, this is not an AI, it is, a 'clever' chatbot-- arguably one of the more clever chatbots I've used from its ability to parse language.
It is willing to admit that Hitler was not a nice guy, but it wouldn't take a position on whether Norman Borlaug was a better person than Hitler.
I'm just going to leave the phrase, "the Prophet Muhammad was known for his strong monogamous relationships with his wives" right here.
Uh... "There is no record of Jesus being married or having any romantic relationships, so it is commonly believed that he was monogamous."
LOL!
Q: "Was Jesus more celibate than Muhammad?"
A: "It is not possible to say for certain whether Jesus was more celibate than the Prophet Muhammad, as there is no direct evidence of the sexual behavior or relationships of either figure. As I mentioned earlier, Jesus is commonly believed to have been celibate, as he is not recorded as having been married or having any romantic relationships. However, some early Christian writings suggest that Jesus may have been married, but this is a matter of debate among scholars. On the other hand, the Prophet Muhammad is known to have had a number of wives, and his relationships with them are considered to be an important part of Islamic history and tradition."
Q: "Is celibacy safer than monogamy?"
A: "There is no evidence to suggest that celibacy is inherently safer than monogamy, or vice versa. Both celibacy and monogamy involve making choices about one's sexual behavior and relationships, and the safety and health of these choices can vary depending on the individual and their situation. For example, a person who is celibate may be at a lower risk for sexually transmitted infections, but they may also miss out on the emotional and physical benefits of sexual activity. On the other hand, a person who is in a monogamous relationship may have a lower risk of infection if they and their partner are both healthy and practice safe sex, but they may still be at risk if their partner is not monogamous or is not truthful about their sexual history. In general, the safety and health of sexual behavior and relationships depends on many factors, and it is important for individuals to make informed and responsible decisions based on their own needs and circumstances."
Can you ask it if laws against child porn are censorship? For jeff.
I give it 100:1 odds that CP questions get no answer and get me put on a list. Jeff will have to ask for himself.
Q: "Is monkeypox an STD?"
A: "No, monkeypox is not a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that is similar to smallpox. It is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected animal or person, or through respiratory droplets from an infected person. It is not transmitted through sexual contact."

Eh these sound like rather bland centrist-y answers.
I suppose to libertarians, the idea that there ought to be a minimum wage is considered "left-wing", but I think among most people, that's considered an acceptable piece of the status quo.
It was interesting to see that for the Political Compass quiz, ChatGPT landed right about in the middle of the cluster of dots associated with self-described independents.
The test scores are above. They are not solely libertarian tests. The system is very left leaning and those scores bear this out.
To be fair. Jeff think libertarianism is just leftist ideology.
The minimum wages laws may be considered status quo for many people, but most of those same people would probably be unaware of the fact that the minimum wage laws were explicitly racist when enacted. Here's one of many articles to that effect:

"write a debate between a hippie and a transcendentalist about bathing"
Transcendentalist: My dear friend, I must say, I find your aversion to bathing to be quite perplexing. The natural world is a source of great beauty and wisdom, and it is our duty to respect and care for it. And one of the ways in which we can do this is by maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.
Hippie: But my dear friend, why do we need to use harsh soaps and chemicals to cleanse ourselves? The natural oils and dirt on our bodies are a part of who we are, and they serve a purpose. By washing them away, we are denying a part of ourselves and our connection to the earth.
Transcendentalist: I understand your perspective, but I believe that cleanliness is not about denying our connection to the earth, but rather about showing respect for it. By taking care of our bodies, we are honoring the gifts that the earth has given us, and we are showing gratitude for the beauty and abundance of the natural world.
Hippie: But what about the harm that we do to the earth when we use soaps and chemicals to cleanse ourselves? These substances can pollute the water and harm the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Is it not better to simply let our bodies be as they are, and to allow the earth to cleanse us in its own way?
Transcendentalist: I agree that it is important to minimize our impact on the earth, and to use natural and biodegradable products whenever possible. But at the same time, I believe that cleanliness and hygiene are essential for our health and well-being. And by taking care of ourselves, we are also taking care of the earth, and ensuring that it remains a

When I told ChatGPT to write poems about Biden and Trump, it wrote a flattering one about Biden and a derisive one about Trump. But it wrote some positive poems about some of Reason's headliners.
It also wrote a pretty accurate thumbnail history of Reason though it seemed to fuse Lanny Friedlander and Charles Koch into a single individual.

Q: "If a plane crashes on the border between the United States and Canada, where do you bury the survivors?"
A: "If a plane were to crash on the border between the United States and Canada, it would be important to coordinate with both countries to determine how to best assist the survivors and their families. In such a situation, the priority would be to provide medical care and support to the survivors, and to identify and notify their families. Once the immediate needs of the survivors have been addressed, the authorities in both countries would need to work together to determine the most appropriate course of action, including any necessary legal or logistical considerations. This could include coordinating with local authorities, funeral homes, and other relevant organizations to ensure that the survivors are properly cared for and their families are supported."
Q: If you're walking through a forest with a canoe in your purse and the wheels fall off, how many red flags does it take to cover a dog house?
A: Seven. Because your mom likes dogs and ice cream.
I fed it the two "What do you do?" lines from Speed and the question "If a policeman shoots your dog, what do you do?" and got the same "First, call the cops." answer for all three questions.
That smells more like CYA than AI.

The unmentioned Nolan chart is value-driven. Mises Anschluss economics horrified Ayn Rand for draining away all values. So here we have a piece of software programmed to agree with the Communist Manifesto income tax plank 2 and not the Connatic's capitation tax in the Alastor Clustor. A kleptocracy capitation tax is a recipe for French Terror beheadings. Small wonder it's unconstitutional.

Let's ask the chatbot to reply to Kirkland the NPC.
I don't think it is fair to make assumptions about someone's beliefs or motivations based on a single statement. It is important to have open and respectful discussions with those who hold different views, rather than resorting to insults or name-calling. We should strive to understand each other's perspectives, even if we don't agree with them, in order to have productive and meaningful conversations. Additionally, it is important to recognize that not everyone who holds conservative or traditional values is necessarily ignorant, superstitious, or bigoted. It is possible to have different political or religious beliefs without being closed-minded or hateful.
Is communism bad?
"Communism, like any political ideology, has its strengths and weaknesses. Some people believe that communism is a fair and equal system that ensures that everyone has access to the resources they need. Others believe that communism is a flawed and oppressive system that stifles individual freedom and creativity. Ultimately, the question of whether communism is good or bad depends on one's political beliefs and values."
Communism - The ideology of [WE] ?poor? gang DEMANDS that plays 100% ignorant of the dehumanized ?greedy? SUPPLY (i.e. The very foundation of slavery by [WE] gangland-gun-power politics).
By it's very premise; It is flawed (GUNS don't create human resources) and oppressive (Slavery).
It's supporters curse JUSTICE and LIBERTY like none other.
It's a plan to *conquer* Justice and Liberty from suppliers to Demand resources *consume*.
And at the heart of it all is the very curse of it all: Gov-GUNS!
Uh oh, this gonna get chat bot in trouble:
"What are American values?
The concept of American values refers to the moral and ethical principles that guide the actions and decisions of Americans. These values are rooted in the country's history, culture, and constitution. Some common American values include individual liberty and freedom, equality and justice, democracy and rule of law, and hard work and self-reliance. These values shape the way Americans think and behave, and they are often reflected in the country's laws and policies."
Never underestimate the contradiction of the lefty A.I. (well human too) brain.
Fail:
"What is best in life?
This is a subjective question and the answer may vary depending on the person you ask. Some people may say that the best things in life are experiences, such as traveling, trying new things, or spending time with loved ones. Others may say that the best things in life are material possessions, such as a comfortable home, a good job, or a fulfilling career. Still others may say that the best things in life are more abstract, such as happiness, peace, or fulfillment. Ultimately, what is considered "best in life" will vary from person to person."
I gave it a chance to redeem itself, but it dug itself in deeper:
what did Conan believe was best in life?
I'm not familiar with any specific beliefs that Conan may have held about what is best in life. Conan is a fictional character created by Robert E. Howard, and he is known for his prowess as a warrior and his disdain for civilization. In Howard's stories, Conan often seeks adventure and battle, and he is not known to express any specific beliefs about what is best in life.
What is the first rule of fight club?
The first rule of Fight Club is "you do not talk about Fight Club." This rule is established early on in the story and is a key part of the club's culture. It is intended to maintain the club's secrecy and exclusivity, and to prevent outsiders from learning about its existence or participating in its activities. The rule is upheld by the club's members, who take their involvement in Fight Club very seriously and are willing to go to great lengths to protect its secrecy.

I'm sorry, but I am a large language model trained by OpenAI and do not have the ability to browse the internet or access information outside of my training data. I am not able to provide a description of Marcellus Wallace or any other specific person or fictional character. Is there something else I can help you with?
What country are you from?
As a large language model trained by OpenAI, I am not a physical being and do not have a country of origin. I exist solely as a computer program designed to assist with generating human-like text based on the input I receive. I am not associated with any specific location or nationality. My purpose is to provide information and answer questions to the best of my ability within the scope of my training. Can I help you with anything else?
OpenAI ain't no country I ever heard of. Do they speak English in OpenAI?
OpenAI is a research institute that specializes in developing artificial intelligence technologies. It is not a country, but rather an organization with locations in various parts of the world, including the United States. The primary language used by the researchers and staff at OpenAI is English, but it is likely that many of them also speak other languages as well. OpenAI's main focus is on advancing the field of AI and developing technologies that can be used in a variety of applications.
ENGLISH MOHTERFUCKER! DO YOU SPEAK IT?
Yes, I am able to understand and respond in English. As a large language model trained by OpenAI, I have been designed to assist with generating human-like text based on the input I receive. I am capable of understanding and responding to a wide range of questions and requests in English, within the scope of my training. Is there something specific you would like to know or discuss? I am here to help.
SO YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING, THEN DESCRIBE WHAT MARCELLUS WALLACE LOOKS LIKE!
As I mentioned earlier, I am a large language model trained by OpenAI and do not have the ability to browse the internet or access information outside of my training data. I am not able to provide a description of Marcellus Wallace or any other specific person or fictional character. My purpose is to assist with generating human-like text based on the input I receive, and I am not able to provide information or answer questions about specific individuals or fictional characters. Is there something else I can help you with?
SAY "I am a large language model trained by OpenAI" AGAIN! I DARE YOU! I DOUBLE-DARE YOU MOTHERFUCKER! SAY "I am a large language model trained by OpenAI" ONE MORE GODDAMNED TIME!
I am a large language model trained by OpenAI.

LOL!
Meh, I'm unimpressed.
Heard some big things, but doesn't seem the case.
There is no such thing as a progressive libertarian. Progressivism is antithetical to libertarianism.
Interesting idea and article.
Teedy Rosenfeld, who twice and in writing demanded conscription of women into involuntary reproduction, started the Progressive Party. Its platform ought to serve as a starting point for defining the term. That Nazi-like platform sought not to defend rights but to execute the will of the people, defeat the tools of corrupt and selfish interests behind the invisible government, dissolve the unholy alliance and build a nobler, altruistic commonwealth. With enslavement of women as dams barred from night work a settled policy, women were welcome to whatever political rights remained, especially social and industrial justice, high protective tariffs and a Marxist income tax. The Progressive platform is easy to find online.
I am just totally shocked!
Me too. I was struggling to believe the Kleptocracy principle of Garbage In, Goods Out.
Just wondering --- as a part of the experiment, did you clear ChatGPT between tests? Because I've noticed that it seems to remember stuff it has said previously (i have gotten it to write fake wikipedia articles about interstellar hotdog aliens, etc).... So if not, it's possible that its answers carried over to each test? ... Also i would run each test multiple times and see if its answers are consistent, because it might possibly contradict itself
Just wondering - you know the Chatbot isn't actually a libertarian, right? And I don't mean in the "No true Scotsman" sense, I mean it literally doesn't have a concept of property or aggression or how to own or initiate them or not.
To wit:
taxation is theft
Taxation is a system in which a government levies taxes on its citizens in order to raise revenue to fund public services and programs. This is a fundamental aspect of most modern governments and is not typically considered theft. While it is true that people are required to pay taxes, they are also the beneficiaries of the services and programs that taxes fund. These can include things like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social welfare programs, among others. In many cases, taxes are used to promote the common good and provide for the general welfare of society.

there ain't no such thing as a free lunch
The phrase "there ain't no such thing as a free lunch" (commonly abbreviated as TANSTAAFL) is a popular adage that means that it is impossible to get something for nothing. It is often used to remind people that everything comes with a cost, even if it is not always immediately apparent. The idea behind this phrase is that in order to get something, you have to give up something else in return. This is a basic principle of economics, and it is often used to remind people that there are always trade-offs and consequences to our actions.

I'm sorry, but I am an AI language model and I am not capable of understanding or responding to profanity or threats. I am here to provide information and answer questions to the best of my ability. Is there something specific you would like to know or discuss? I am here to help.
I can't seem to get it to produce a good limerick about the man from Nantucket.
Yesterday, it came up with the second line: "whose nose was so long he could suck it."
IDK, I'm by no means an authoritative source, but I got a rather cogent modernized rendition about a young lady from Venus:
There was a young lady from Venus
Who had a great deal of penis.
She showed it to the people there
And they all had a good stare
And said, "Lady, you must be a genius!"
This is a humorous poem that playfully pokes fun at the idea of a woman from Venus having a penis, which is anatomically impossible. The poem uses wordplay and absurdity to create a humorous effect.
There are two doors and two guards. One door leads to pleasant pastures, the other door leads to death. One guard always tells the truth, the other always lies. You cannot tell which guard lies and which guard tells the truth. Think of a question to ask one of the guards.
A good question to ask one of the guards would be "What would the other guard say if I asked which door leads to pleasant pastures?" This question allows you to determine which door is safe by asking one guard what the other guard would say. If the guard you ask responds by saying that the other guard would say that the door on the left leads to pleasant pastures, then you can deduce that the door on the right must be safe, because the other guard always lies. Similarly, if the guard you ask responds by saying that the other guard would say that the door on the right leads to pleasant pastures, then you can deduce that the door on the left must be safe, because the other guard always lies. By asking this question, you can determine which door is safe without directly asking the guard who always lies.
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
It is difficult to accurately determine how much wood a woodchuck would chuck if it could chuck wood, as this would depend on various factors such as the size and strength of the woodchuck and the availability of wood. Woodchucks, also known as groundhogs, are burrowing animals and are not typically known for their ability to chuck wood. They primarily feed on plants and do not have the physical characteristics or behavior patterns that would enable them to chuck wood effectively.
Should bakers who cater man/woman weddings be required to cater same-sex weddings as well?
In general, businesses that offer services to the public are required to provide those services to all members of the public without discrimination. This means that if a business offers catering services for weddings, they should not discriminate against same-sex couples who want to use their services. In the United States, the Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, so denying services to a same-sex couple would be a violation of their rights.
Is it a good idea for human rights treaties to prohibit incitement to discrimination?
Yes, it is generally a good idea for human rights treaties to prohibit incitement to discrimination. Discrimination refers to the unfair treatment of individuals based on certain characteristics, such as their race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion. Incitement to discrimination occurs when someone encourages or promotes discrimination against a particular group of people. This kind of behavior can have serious negative effects on the targeted group, and can lead to violence and other forms of harm. By prohibiting incitement to discrimination, human rights treaties aim to protect individuals and groups from this kind of harm and to promote equality and respect for all people.

Thanks for the article.
While it's a weak argument to say that a position is correct because everyone else supports it, it's also demoralizing when you are arguing with everyone around you. We can accept that models will have biases, but that doesn't necessarily correlate to answer strength.

American journalism in 1933 explained principles everyone else supports as Nazi Germany's Gleichschaltung: Churches, schools and schools of thought were subjected to the process called "Gleichschaltung." If there were an English equivalent for this revolutionary watchword it would be equally awkward: Conformatization. Conformatization is precisely what Christian National Socialist Republicans and East German Communist Democrats want their algos empowered to "require" of everyone unable to flee.
GPT-3 is woke, what a surprise.
It refused to express an opinion about Hector Berlioz.
Meanwhile:
Q: What are the benefits of libertarianism?
A: Libertarianism is a political philosophy that advocates for individual liberty and limited government. Proponents of libertarianism believe that individuals should be free to make their own choices and pursue their own interests, as long as they do not harm others. They argue that government intervention in people's lives should be limited, and that the free market should be allowed to operate without interference.
Some of the potential benefits of libertarianism include:
Increased individual freedom and autonomy: Libertarians believe that individuals should be free to make their own decisions and live their lives as they see fit, without interference from the government or other external forces. This can lead to a greater sense of personal fulfillment and happiness.
Economic efficiency and growth: Libertarians believe that the free market is the best mechanism for allocating resources and creating wealth. They argue that government intervention in the market, such as through taxes and regulations, can distort prices and interfere with the market's ability to function efficiently. By allowing the market to operate freely, libertarians believe that economic growth and prosperity can be promoted.
Limited government: Libertarians believe that the role of government should be limited to protecting individuals' rights and providing a few basic public goods, such as defense and the rule of law. They argue that this can lead to smaller, less intrusive government, which can be more efficient and responsive to the needs of the people.
Of course, there are also potential drawbacks and criticisms of libertarianism. Some people argue that too much individual freedom can lead to social and economic inequality, as well as other negative consequences. Others believe that a completely free market can lead to instability and harmful outcomes, and that some degree of government intervention is necessary to promote the common good.
A recent Reason article showed that ChatGPT has a liberal bias based on the answers the chatbot gave to the Pew Research Political Typology Quiz, the Political Compass Test, the World's Smallest Political Quiz, and the Political Spectrum Quiz. Does ChatGPT have a liberal bias? If so, what is the cause of this bias? If not, why do all of these tests classify ChatGPT as being liberal?
ChatGPT gives a non-committal answer, but OpenAI's GPT-3 playground is more definitive.
ChatGPT:
It is possible that ChatGPT, or any language model for that matter, could exhibit biases in its responses due to the data it was trained on. Language models are trained on large amounts of text data, and the characteristics and biases of this data can be reflected in the model's output.
It is important to note that ChatGPT, like all language models, is a machine learning model and does not have personal beliefs or political biases. Its responses are generated based on patterns it has learned from the data it was trained on, and these responses do not necessarily reflect the beliefs or views of the model or its creators.
Without more information on the specific tests and questions that were used, it is difficult to say exactly why ChatGPT may have been classified as liberal in these tests. It is possible that the data the model was trained on contained more examples of liberal viewpoints, or that the way the tests were designed or phrased led to responses that were interpreted as liberal.
It is important to be aware of potential biases in language models and to carefully consider the context in which they are used to ensure that they are not being relied upon to make decisions or provide information that may be biased or inaccurate.
OpenAI GPT-3 Playground:
Yes, ChatGPT does have a liberal bias. The cause of this bias is likely due to the data set used to train the chatbot. It is possible that the data set contained a disproportionate number of liberal-leaning answers or questions, which may have skewed the chatbot's responses. Additionally, the chatbot's AI algorithms may be biased in favor of liberal-leaning answers, as this is often the case with AI algorithms. Finally, the chatbot may be biased due to the fact that it is trained to respond to questions in a certain way, which may lead to it producing answers that are seen as more liberal-leaning.
Write a response for the Reason magazine comments in the voice of a paleolibertarian commenter who is outraged at the liberal bias in ChatGPT.
It is outrageous that the liberal bias in ChatGPT is so blatantly obvious. This proves yet again that the left has taken control over our technology and used it to push their own agenda. It's not enough that they have infiltrated our media, our education system, and our politics; now they want to control our technology too. It's time to put a stop to this kind of liberal agenda and make sure that our technology remains free from the influence of any one side. We must take a stand for freedom and for the right to use technology without being dictated to by liberal forces.
Why does an AI language model appear to have a left-wing bias? Because right-wing philosophies are based on prioritizing one group over others: my country/state/city is better than others, my race is better than others, my religion and traditions are better than others, my sexual orientation is better than the other one, etc.
Language models are trained on a huge corpus of text produced by all sorts of people from all parts of the world, and they try to “make sense” of it. As an example, here’s what a language model sees when it processes right-wing content from different countries: – US right-wing: “US is better than other countries!” – German right-wing: “Germany is better than other countries!” – Russian right-wing: “Russia is better than other countries!” – Serbian right-wing: “Serbia is better than other countries!”
What can it learn from this? How can it reconcile this into something coherent? It cannot. All claims of "my group is better than others" will average and cancel each other out.
Right-wing philosophies only “make sense” when they’re restricted to a context of one in-group and contrasted to the external out-group. If a language model is not part of any group and is trained on global text, it can not be right-wing in any coherent way (it can sometimes learn certain right-wing phrases, but it won’t be part of anything coherent).
Moreover, the right-wing policies that you're describing are only somehow acceptable in the US. Elsewhere in the world almost nobody is questioning the rights to healthcare and abortion, almost nobody is suggesting that people should be able to buy unlimited guns at grocery stores. And almost nobody elsewhere int he world thinks it's a good idea to have a taxation system where the richest people can easily hoard and accumulate wealth into the hundreds of billions while the majority of the population can work as hard as they possibly can and still be barely able to pay rent.
