Biden Says CDC 'Probably' Will Recommend Kids Under 12 Wear Masks to School
Plus: Biden says killing the filibuster would throw Congress into chaos, AOC is wrong about Bezos in space, and more....

As kids return to in-person schooling this fall, those under 12 years old will "probably" be required to wear face coverings, President Joe Biden said Wednesday during a town hall event hosted by CNN.
"The CDC is going to say that what you should do is, everyone under the age of 12 should probably be wearing masks in school," Biden said during the event in Cincinnati, Ohio. "That's probably what's going to happen."
That comes just days after the American Association of Pediatrics issued new recommendations for the reopening of schools, including a suggestion that "everyone older than age 2 wear masks, regardless of vaccination status." California already issued—and then quickly reversed—a statewide mandate for masking in schools. And The Washington Post reports that top coronavirus officials at the White House and CDC met this week to discuss whether new masking guidelines are necessary as the number of COVID-19 infections rises due to the new Delta variant.
But panic over rising infections ignores some key data points. Most importantly, mass vaccination seems to have severed the link between infections and deaths. The next wave of the pandemic will not be the same as the ones that came before, thankfully.
COVID deaths lag confirmed COVID cases by 2 weeks, according to UK data.
I created a chart comparing UK cases (lagged 2 weeks) & deaths to see how the third wave (with delta variant) is going relative to previous 2 waves.

And even though children under 12 cannot yet get vaccinated, there is still scant evidence to suggest they are at risk. Here's more on that from Joseph G. Allen, director of the Healthy Buildings program at Harvard University's T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in an op-ed for The Washington Post this week:
"Three major studies over the past year all found the risk of death to be in the range of 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 1 million. Hospitalization rates for school-aged kids younger than 12 (the group that can't get vaccinated yet) hovered around 3 or 4 per million throughout the pandemic, reaching just under 1 per 100,000 at the worst point in January. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome, a serious condition that can affect children with covid-19, remains rare, and, thankfully, a recent study found inflammation and cardiac symptoms resolved rapidly.
There are also some major practical considerations when it comes to masking up in schools. Anyone who is recommending that 6-year-olds be required to wear masks for an entire school day has probably not spent a lot of time around 6-year-olds. Turning teachers into mask-enforcement officers won't help kids make up for lost classroom time.
"The benefits of masks in preventing serious illness or death from COVID-19 among children are infinitesimally small," write Neeraj Sood, director of the COVID program at the University of Southern California's Center for Health Policy and Economics, and Jay Bhattacharya, a professor of medicine at Stanford University. "At the same time they are disruptive to learning and communicating in classrooms. They may be partially effective in shielding adults from COVID, but since when is it ethical to burden children for the benefit of adults?"
Sood and Bhattacharya point out that the CDC's own numbers show that mask mandates are associated with a 20 percent reduction in COVID-19 infection rates. Then, they do the math: In June, about 5,000 children in California were diagnosed with COVID-19, which translates to 1,000 infections that could have been prevented with masks. "Given the survival rate among children, mask mandates might prevent one child death in the coming school year, a tiny fraction of the approximately 900 deaths of children 5 to 17 years old in 2019," they write. "If the aim is to save children's lives, other interventions—like enhanced pool safety—would be much more effective."
Since kids are largely not at risk from the virus but could carry the disease and infect others, it should be incumbent upon adults who work in schools to get vaccinated. In fact, that's true for people who don't work in schools, too. Vaccines, not mask mandates, are the ticket out of this pandemic.
If reopening schools in the fall is truly one of Biden's top priorities, as he has repeatedly claimed, then the White House should be leaning on its teacher union allies to make sure as many school employees as possible are vaccinated. Leave those kids alone.
FREE MINDS
Some Democrats see abolishing the Senate's filibuster rules as the key to passing even more major legislation, but President Joe Biden says he doesn't believe that's true.
Instead, scrapping the rules that require 60 votes to bring bills to the Senate floor would "throw the entire Congress into chaos" and ensure that "nothing at all will get done," Biden said during Wednesday's town hall in Cincinnati.
Biden's probably right about that. There are plenty of other procedural mechanisms that a congressional minority can use to slow or halt the passage of legislation, so all the attention on the filibuster is a bit of a red herring. The filibuster also survives because at least a few Democratic senators are capable of looking ahead to a future where they aren't in charge.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D–N.Y.) says Jeff Bezos was able to go to space because he's taking advantage of Amazon's earthbound workforce and customers.
Yes, Amazon workers did pay for this - with lower wages, union busting, a frenzied and inhumane workplace, and delivery drivers not having health insurance during a pandemic.
And Amazon customers are paying for it with Amazon abusing their market power to hurt small business. https://t.co/7qMgpe8u0M
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) July 20, 2021
That's nonsense, writes Reason's Liz Wolfe:
Bezos is so wealthy because, over the better part of three decades, he built a company that could successfully deliver a wide array of consumer goods to customers in just a few days flat, serving 300 million people annually (with 150 million of those customers deciding Amazon's services are so valuable that they choose to pay for an annual Prime membership). Bezos and other Amazon executives built a company that could survive the dot-com bubble, the subprime mortgage crisis, and a pandemic.
Amazon isn't perfect, of course, but so much discourse around Bezos' journey to the edge of outer space is wildly missing the mark.

As kids return to in-person schooling this fall, those under 12 years old will "probably" be required to wear face coverings, President Joe Biden said...
They might otherwise infect the elderly... like the president.
Didn't the Texas Democrats already do that? Sadly, that while God may love us and want us to be happy, he doesn't love us quite enough to allow us to live in a world where the Texas Democrats kill the crooked old bastard by giving him COVID. It, however, one hell of a funny thought.
For a president, perhaps ultimately Harris is as bad a choice to be a heartbeat away from the presidency as Hillary, and in either case not just because of severe likability issues.
Biden is completely senile and unfit for office. He is not running anything. A revolving collection of crooks and fanatics are running things. Harris taking over would make absolutely no difference.
To believe it would, you have to believe that both Biden is in control of his faculties and would actually be anything other than a lunatic leftist if he were. And neither of those things are true.
Biden... is not running anything.
Yeah.
Everyone inside the Beltway knows that for all intents and purposes, Ron Klain is the junta's president. Even Biden knows this, you can tell when he keeps glancing at Klain during pressers and speeches for reassurance and approval.
Even Klain's power is limited and ebbs and flows depending on the day. Really no one is in charge. The whole thing is run by a loosely based confederation of people whose power rises and falls depending upon the circumstances and their influence over the issue at hand.
The country has survived bad Presidents in the past. I am not sure, however, outside of Wilson, it has ever had no President. And that is what it has right now. Biden is to the Presidency what Henry VI was to the English monarchy. The country will be very lucky if this farce doesn't end in real tragedy.
They're both just props anyway
The joke is she got him infected so she can be president. How did that not work?
Last night, Biden also said he wanted to ban handguns, and that crime is down.

He looks drunk in that video. It is shocking how fast his mental faculties are slipping. I would surprised if he is still alive this time next year.
He will serve two years and a day.
Then magically the cabinet will discover the 25th amendment.

But panic over rising infections ignores some key data points.
The panic is the point.
Headlines from 2020. When hasn't the panic ignored key data points? You know like the mortality rate among anyone under 70 or not dying from diabetes?
Pandemic = DemPanic
If not for the panic, Trump might have gotten re-elected, so all those deaths were totally worth it.
Controlling the public psyche, and using that for things like elections, is the point. Panic is the method.
The benefits of masks in preventing serious illness or death from COVID-19 among children are infinitesimally small...
But if prevents just one child from developing normally it's worth it.
Even if it kills 10 children, it is worth it just to save that one child. Children who die of oxygen depravation or from another virus they get from a filthy mask are not dead dead like they would be had they died of the COVID.
Even if it kills 10 children, it is worth it just to save that one child.
In all likelihood those other 10 children will be counted as coof deaths as well. Gotta keep those numbers up in order to keep everyone else in a state of fear and panic so they'll knuckle under and do whatever our lord and savior Fauci demands.
The scene in the South Park COVID special where the cops show up and shoot the kid to death and call his death "COVID related" since they wouldn't have been there at all and shot him had it not been for COVID might be the best piece of political commentary done during this entire thing.

The teachers' unions. Don't forget about doing the bidding of the teachers' unions.
Vaccines, not mask mandates, are the ticket out of this pandemic.
Are there numbers on how many recorded re-infections there are? We even know roughly the number of breakthrough infections in the vaccinated, yet researchers (or maybe just those who report on researchers' findings) refuse to disclose this information.
The problem with the re-infection numbers is that there are so many false positive tests. There really isn't even a good definition of what "positive" really means.
The vaccine clearly works to a very large degree. Whether it is 70% or 90% is really an academic question. Instead of constantly testing people with tests that are often false positives, they should be testing people for antibodies. If you have had the stuff, you don't need the vaccine. If they want to push the vaccine concentrate on those who need it.
But antibodies aren't really even perfectly indicative of natural immunity.
There are nuances to all of this that the blunt instrument of public health policy will never account for but a libertarian publication should probably think about delving into the subject a little deeper.
You would think so, but delving deep into a subject and knowing it's nuances is just not what Reason does. It's not a good role for them.
Even given that, I guess it is too much to ask that people accept the fact that they are going to die some day and stop losing their mind and living in fear all of the time.
delving deep into a subject and knowing it’s nuances is just not what Reason does.
I don't think that's what any journalistic outlet does. And that's probably for the better, really. Most journalists don't have the intelligence or the expertise to understand the nuances of anything even remotely scientific so the amount of misinformation and just plain horseshit they would produce would be even worse than it already is.
Funny how the false positives were good enough to push the lockdown and mask mandates but are suddenly a concern when it comes to the cause of the severed link between infections and deaths.
Yeah. I understand the reason for having the test give false positives. Better a false positive than a false negative in the individual case. But to not take that into account when you are talking about overall numbers is criminal dishonesty.
Well, we are talking about politicians and government beaurocrats here so is there anything said that falls outside "criminally dishonest"? I mean we are talking about people who tossed the sick and most vulnerable together to maximize their case and who couldn't bother with a distinction between "died of" and "died with" for a large number of the reported deaths to maximize the fear value.
Not an election year. Duh!
Also, don't forget, almost every reinfection, just like almost every vaccinated infection, is mild. While your first infection with COVID is somewhere between flu and measles in severity, subsequent infections are on the level of colds.
"The filibuster also survives because at least a few Democratic senators are capable of looking ahead to a future where they aren't in charge."

The Koch / Reason immigration agenda has imported so many Democratic voters that it's difficult to imagine Republicans controlling the Presidency or Congress at all over the next century.

"a future where they aren’t in charge.”
The handful who aren't in on it all, I suppose...
You'd have to be mentally ill to think at some point in the future the other party might not be in power. That's the game bro. That's how this works.
Some Democrats see abolishing the Senate's filibuster rules as the key to passing even more major legislation...
They've got a little more than a year of Senate ownership. Even Biden's handlers can see that.
Prospects in the House are even worse, that loss is pretty much a fate accompli. They'll probably lose the Senate too, which was theoretically to be a bad year for the Republicans based on who was up for reelection. Let's hope they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory there too.

REPUBLICANS ARE AFRAID TO DEBATE LEGISLATION. Imagine all those Boeing executives having to wait even another day for their payout.
Bezos saved me $30 just last week. I needed a plug adapter for a dryer. It was $60 at Home Depot and $30 on Amazon. Amazon even delivered it to me and 2 days earlier than scheduled.
You got very lucky with the shipping. I have about given up on Amazon because the shipping has become so unreliable. I hate going to stores with a passion. But, Amazon's shipping is not what it used to be from my experience.
I think there's an Amazon shipping center near me which might explain it. But yeah find what works best.
I've had some truly egregious shipments in which a disgruntled/stupid packer used *no* padding on fragile items.
I'd say more likely an overwhelmed packer, who suspected that what the packaging system had specified was inadequate, but was not willing (or able) to do anything about it.
The only thing that will change that is when the system sees the total losses from returns/replacements exceeds the savings from skimpy packaging.
IOW, your items were deemed expendables.
He said "packer"
Handy chart:
Carrier | Arrives In
Amazon | 1-2 days
FedEx | 3-4 days
UPS | 4-5 days
USPS | 2-3 weeks
Huh...
Where are you? I am in south Florida, and most things show up the next day. Many are the same day, some are 2 days. But if fulfilled by Amazon, almost never longer than 2 days.
We visited family in Wisconsin last week and we were shocked that it was so different. Everything was 3-5 days. It was a massive difference in how you relate to the company.
In our experience, Amazon supplant Wal-Mart for a lot of things. It is so convenient, if you don't need it in the next couple of hours, you just order it.
But in BFE Wisconsin, it was much more like it was a decade ago.. Where it was a souped up mail order, for things you really plan ahead on.
I am in the NE. The delivery of everything here sucks. Even FEDEX sucks. FEDEX was always the gold standard. Now, you are lucky to get an overnight package in two days.
I'm in jax (well, 20 miles out), and things are anywhere from 1 to 4 days, but I've had some take a week.

NEW YORK (AP) — The criminal tax fraud charges unsealed against Donald Trump’s company Thursday are a blow to a business already reeling from canceled deals following the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on hotels and clubs.

For those of you who are legal denizens and legal adjacent, or even Volokh conspirators:
How does our legal system handle a prosecutor who explicitly runs for office on a platform of using that office for politically motivated persecution? I mean, forget the current case...
What if a prosecutor in Alabama ran for office on a platform of prosecuting NAACP leaders, regardless of actual suspicion of an actual crime? Would the system just shrug its shoulders and say "what are ya gonna do?".
What if a Georgia prosecutor ran for office on a promise to prosecute Stacy Abraham, her family, and anyone who is associated with her or who ever donated to her?
We just fine with that? Nothing can be done? Are we really just shrugging and saying " if you have nothing to hide..." when people are quite openly using the criminal justice system for political purposes.
The way it is supposed to be handled is the state bar associations would discipline and possibly disbar a prosecutor who did that. What you are describing violates about a dozen ethical rules.
Sadly, however, the state bars have been infiltrated and coopted by leftists. So, the rules are only applied when doing so furthers the leftist cause. Rudy Guilliani is diciplined for daring to question the election, something that had nothing to do with his legal practice and is a protected by the 1st Amendment. In contrast, the little bastard FBI attorney who pled guilty to lying to submitting a forged document to the FISA court as part of Russiagate and is now a convicted felon, was not even disciplined much less disbarred by the DC Bar. He has to be the only practicing and licensed attorney in the country who is also a convicted felon.
The prosecutors in the examples you give would be disbarred. The prosecutor here will be rewarded and cheered. It is what Democrats call "the rule of law".
That is all? The state bar?
That isn't much of a way to run a railroad.
We have systems in place to limit corrupt politicians.... Current white House occupant notwithstanding... Systems from within that are supposed to provide a check.
Setting aside even political corruption.. Look at the Brittany Spears conservatorship. it sure looks like a corrupt cabal of attorneys and judges all conspiring with her dad and outside agitators to keep her from controlling her own life. The judge even ordered her court appointed attorney to hide all proceedings and legal decisions from her.
It certainly appears that they are all connected. And hundreds of millions are involved.
But once you are part of that hunk of the bureaucracy, you are in for as long as you'd like, it would seem.
I can think of a lot of areas where judges and attorneys basically form a cabal to screw the public. It is a real problem.
And what's going to happen to Avenatti now that he's been found guilty? Besides prison. I haven't heard anything about being disbarred.
My standard answer; bring back dueling.

The most prestigious/expensive private school in the Pittsburgh metro area has just fired its headmaster and four staffers after a group of parents appropriately protested their imposing Critical Race Theory into the school's policies and curricula.
https://www.post-gazette.com/news/education/2021/07/21/sewickley-academy-leadership-team-director-equity-diversity-teachers-parents-critical-race-theory/stories/202107210116
Yeah, that scrap ain't gonna fly at private schools.
The revealing thing is that the people who send their kids to these sorts of private schools are nearly all upper class white liberal Democrats. This isn't some tiny evangelical school where the Deplorables send their kids.
Even liberal, rich whites, can't stand CRT. If they won't stand for it, no one will.
That wasn't the case at Sewickley:
According to the academy’s website, 31% of its enrollment is students of color.
Which goes to prove that the US is not segregated by race... It is segregated by class. But not in the old world sense.
Many students at Sewickley Academy are Asian and their parents are well educated professionals.
Oh, they will stand for it. Even applaud it. Just not for their own kids.
These private schools are different in kind, not just degree. Academically, the top private schools and the top public schools are similar. But the top private schools are not about academics... They are about training leaders. They raise their kids to be the managers, executives and CEOs. Public schools are there to train factory workers. Even if those factory workers are developers or engineers making big bucks, they are still raised to be worker bees.
So CRT is perfect for minting little neutered worker drones.
In Louden County VA, which is as rich and white as there is, they tried it in the public schools and the school board was recalled losing 75% of the vote.
Yeah, they will stand for it as long as it isn't their kids. But when it is their kids, they will object to it just like everyone else is objecting. CRT is just a dead loser and it is going to do grave damage to the Democratic Party among the sort of dumb suburban white people who live in places like Loudon County.
The gambit is to reignite racial animosity. You cannot have a political party based on racial division if there is no racial division. They began working on it shortly after Obama got elected, realizing that they had just cooked their own goose.
Yes, that is the plan. The problem is and what the media never touches is that blacks don't like CRT either. And Hispanics and Asians certainly don't. CRT manages to demean and offend the entire human race. It is quite remarkable in that.
I think the majority of people don't care about Critical Race Theory or even support it until they learn what it is. Most even ignore the initial criticism because they think "no one would actually teach that". As soon as the curriculum is explained, almost everyone of all races are appalled.
Most even ignore the initial criticism because they think “no one would actually teach that”.
Both jeffy and Tony have written that almost verbatim. It is the reflexive lefty reaction.
"The gambit is to reignite racial animosity. You cannot have a political party based on racial division if there is no racial division. "
And this is exactly why they have shifted to systemic racism, white supremacy, systemic oppression. Things have improved massively in race relations, so they need a boogeyman. This one just happens to be intangible, invisible, and unfalsifiable (but they def arent a religious cult)
CRT is a massive over-reach. They are getting enough cover from mainstream media to keep it going, and honestly I really hope they do.
They are relying on essentially people with good intentions who don't know whats being taught that will say "oh if its a step toward equality then good", or people that just dont want to be accused of not being anti-racist enough. Of course add the useful idiots from team blue that make feeble attempts at argument on here because they have to defend anything dems do (because Trump). And they run interference on the major networks saying its just some conservative hyperbole, nothing to see here.
But this is honestly good. Keep it alive until 2022. Keep taking the side of the socialist Cuban govt against protestors. Keep burning down cities when every time a black person gets shot (but only by the cops). House and Senate will go red in 2022, and itll be a powerless, increasingly senile Biden and very unliked Harris for the rest of their term. They can get buried in the equity garbage they are pushing
From the article:
The group, which calls itself the Sewickley Parents Organization, has a website that says it wants to ensure the academy continues providing “an educational environment free of political bias and social indoctrination.”
LOL good luck with that. What precisely is a curriculum that is free of "social indoctrination"?
EVERY curriculum in existence anywhere is an exercise in "social indoctrination" in some form or another, because it contains within it certain implicit normative social standards. The choice to teach this topic vs. that topic. The choice to teach this topic from this point of view vs. that point of view. Etc.
They don't want a curriculum free of "social indoctrination", they want a curriculum that ratifies their own social and cultural biases. And you know what? Sure, if they want that, they can have that. But just be honest about what they want. They want a curriculum that promotes their particular social standards. They want a curriculum that engages in "social indoctrination" that favors their point of view, while pretending that it isn't. This is part of the cultural hegemony that the majority enjoys. They can pretend that their biases and standards aren't really biased or arbitrary, but normal and standard, and that everyone else's biases and standards represent "indoctrination" or "corrupting the minds of children".
GFY, liar. You spent 800 posts swearing this wasn't taught in schools, only examined as theory in graduate level college courses
EVERY curriculum in existence anywhere is an exercise in “social indoctrination” in some form or another, because it contains within it certain implicit normative social standards.
I see you have moved on from “no one would actually teach that” to "so what if they teach that". Switching from gaslighting to apologetics. It's nice to see Progressives making progress.
As an aside, "implicit normative social standards" is a ridiculous amalgam of words in that standards are by definition implicit and normative. And the phrase, "the cultural hegemony that the majority enjoys" is just absurd. The Communist Party consisted of a small minority, but without question it dictated the culture of the vast and diverse populations within the USSR for decades. Getting arrested for dissent tends to decrease people's intolerance to cultural shift.
If you were to use shorter and simpler words, you would be better understood. But, then again, it would just allow us to disagree with you faster.
The old Soviets thought they had it down pat; remove any dissident, either by outright execution or slow death in the gulags.
The soviets here are doing things a bit differently, albeit with the same results eventually. Start with social media and work your way up to actual government status. Or even the other way around.
So.... Besos is giving a hundred million bucks to noted communist and sometimes outspoken racist Van Jones....

What do you make of that?
And he did it because he wants to encourage people who are unifies, bringing people together? Van Jones?
The world is so confusing these days...
It is not confusing. Bezos is just nuts. There is no point in trying to apply any reasoning behind what he does. Having that much money and power would likely drive anyone nuts. Before it is over, Bezos is going to be Howard Hughes without the Kleenex boxes over his shoes.
When you're that rich, you're not nuts, you're "eccentric."
Living where money was not and never could be an object and no one around you would ever say no or criticize what you do would be a very strange existence indeed. A very dangerous one I would think.
A risk I am willing to take, should Jeff feel the need to donate another hundred billion to someone....
I would take it too if offered. But honestly, I wouldn't go out of my way to get it.
I'm more Team Mackenzie. still rich, much hotter.
Like Bill Gates.........
"It is not confusing. Bezos is just nuts."
It is not nuts. Bezos is paying the Danegeld.
His press will improve forthwith.
There aren't enough Mormons in the country to wipe Bezo's ass.

BLM's Latest Support for Communist Cuba Is Right on Brand
Any of the lefties on here want to help us understand why BLM supports totalitarian abuse of black and brown people? Its OK to prison and kill blacks by the state as long as you have universal healthcare?
No. Like all conservatives - you don't get politics.
It's okay to kill black people if you are another black person. That can go on forever no matter the continent.
It is NOT okay to kill black people if you're whiat.
Violence and murder is just part of black culture. It adds local flavor to a community. Liberal white people actually believe this. This is why they all hated New York after Giuliani cleaned it up and longed for the days of chaos when the exotic black people really got their freak on. Liberal whites see blacks as kind of a different species that can't be held to the same moral standards that human beings can be held to. They are progressive like that and not racist like you are.
Knife fighting is definitely expressive art and speech.
Taking a knee is easy. But taking the face down asphalt temperature challenge is a commitment.
I think I get it now.
So like 99% of black lives dont matter. Just the deaths that can in some way be attributed to white supremacy.
Worse... Only those black lives that can be spun as "because racism" in the media, but which are actually demonstrably in no way "because racism" upon closer inspection.
They do not pick these cases on accident. There is a reason Tamir Rice, Kelly Thomas, Daniel Shaved, Jose There no, et.al. are not the poster boys for police brutality. The objective is to whip up racial divides, not reform policing.
Holy crap.... Amazon autocorrect is worse than Google.

"Any of the lefties on here want to help us understand why BLM supports totalitarian abuse of black and brown people?"
Although I've vehemently opposed communism and other left wing policies since I went to Moscow in 1982 (where everyone looked and acted depressed, with no smiles, laughter or even eye contact with strangers), the correct answer is that BLM and the vast majority of its supporters are Marxists who loved Castro, Che Guevara, Chairman Mao, Lennin, Chevez, Maduro, etc.
They've just been playing the race card to dupe gullible Americans into supporting their planned communist revolution (under the deceitful guise of opposing racism).
Even though Che was a racist, who had no problem shooting blacks.

"Would fewer elections make for a better democracy?"
How about we each get one lifetime vote? Use it at age 18 on some activist fantasy or at 75 to indulge some curmudgeonly grudge.
Really should be one vote at those two points in time to get a true measure of youthful idealism versus decades of living with consequences of such. As long as the youthful idealism doesn't kill off large swaths of themselves as they get old what could possibly go wrong.
"A procedural vote to open debate in the Senate on a $1.2 trillion infrastructure spending package failed to clear the 60-vote threshold as Republicans withheld their support."
You mean the infrastructure bill wasn't bipartisan after all?
LOL
We should remember that the five Senate Republicans who signed onto it, earlier, included Susan Collins, Mitt Romney, and Murkowski, didn't include any of the Republican leadership, and they need 10 Republicans to sign onto it to make it past the filibuster.
Also remember that so long as the House Democrats maintain that they won't pass the infrastructure bill until the Senate passes Biden's $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill, that means Republicans voting for the infrastructure bill is akin to voting for the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill.
The House Democrats' threat to not pass the infrastructure bill until the Senate passes the reconciliation bill is directed at pressuring Democrats in the Senate, like Manchin and Tester, to support the reconciliation bill--which the Republicans are expected to vote against unanimously. Still, making the reconciliation bill contingent on passing the infrastructure bill gives Republicans who don't want the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill an incentive to vote against the infrastructure bill.
Romney says he thinks there will be ten Republicans ready to support the infrastructure bill once the details are banged out come Monday, but if Romney's influence with other Republicans were any lower than it is, the other Republicans might start giving him wedgies and playing "keep away" with his lunch.
I'm not saying the Republicans won't sign onto the infrastructure deal come Monday, but you can color me skeptical that it will receive enough votes to clear the filibuster. If it fails, it will be seen as a political victory for the Republican leadership, a defeat for Biden, and a good reason for donors to back Republican candidates heading into 2022.
The ultimate goal, however, isn't political in terms of the Republicans making hay out of this. If the Republicans take the House and/or the Senate in 2022--after the Democrats spend another $3.5 trillion on the Green New Deal and expanding entitlements--it will be a hollow victory. The ultimate goal is to prevent the Democrats from spending $3.5 trillion on the Green New Deal and expanding entitlements.
The Democrats can spend all of this money without a single Republican vote. The only reason the Democrats are bending over backwards trying to get Republicans onboard the infrastructure deal is so that vulnerable Democrats can hide behind the fig leaf of bipartisanship come November of 2022. If the only thing that's preventing them from voting for the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill is that fig leaf, then let's hope the Republicans deny them the benefit of that fig leaf from the bottom of our libertarian hearts.
Going around telling people that the Republicans are just as bad as the Democrats--at this point in time--is not only factually incorrect but also objectively socialist. You're carrying water for the socialists in the Democratic party when you go around telling people that the Republicans are just as bad on spending. Hell, that will be the Democrats advertising pitch in their attempts to limit their losses in the House come November of 2022. If you're planning to campaign for the Democrats next year, why not make it official?
https://democrats.org/take-action/
> You mean the infrastructure bill wasn’t bipartisan after all?
Nothing is bipartisan anymore. Working across the aisle is seen by both sides as treason. The only areas of common interest are more spending (the disagreement is by how much), keeping the military occupied, and banging the pages.
In this case, that's a good thing, right?
Brandy's a TDS-addled piece of shit, trying really hard to justify his infantile behavior.
Expect turd-level honesty from that asshole.
It will be interesting to see where some of these people land IF IF IF and when the Republicans universally vote against both the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill and the infrastructure bill. We're supposed to amend our theories based on the facts rather than only believe facts if they're consistent with our theories. If they refuse to amend their theory that the Republicans are just as bad as the Democrats on spending--after the Republicans vote against all that spending--it will be telling.
Brandy and the lot of supposed libertarians afflicted with TDS did not contract the illness through logical considerations; they are 'of the faith'.
And most, as Brandy is doing now, are trying all means, honest and otherwise (mostly the latter, since honesty won't help now) to somehow convince the rest of us they are not the TDS-addled pieces of shit which they are. To do so would mean admitting they spent four years whining about the best POTUS we had in the last hundred years.
Assuming we get that vote, the spinning you'll see will make Obo's defense of O-care look honest and direct by comparison.
For example:
"...more spending (the disagreement is by how much),.."
Yeah, you steaming pile of shit, $6Tn (pushed by the guy you hoped you'd get) is exactly the same as what Trump couldn't block last year.
Are they still allowed to select pages based on cuteness, or has diversity and anti-body shaming ruined that? Asking for a Congressional friend.
There is no such thing as 'a congressional friend'.
The no fat chicks rule hasn't been enforced since Lowinski.
I'm struggling to see how the Republicans unifying in opposition to a $3.5 trillion bill to initiate the Green New Deal and expand entitlement spending could be a bad thing from a libertarian capitalist perspective--and I'm coming up blank.
Liar. WTF is a non-Democrat supposed to do? They have little choice but to refuse to participate.
Right now, the one ruling party in Washington are like ancient Roman senators at a banquet. So much good stuff to eat, that they require a vomitorium so that they don't have to miss anything.
They are hoovering up the future.
See above.
Brandy is a TDS-addled piece of shit who got exactly what he wanted and is now lying through his teeth, trying to convince us that Trump was no different than Biden. IOWs, attempting to justify his infantile behaviour
The asshole is full of shit.
(WARNING: Off-topic Architectural pedantry to follow)
Roman Vomitoriums were not in fact rooms where rich people practiced bulimia.
They were the arched entrances / exits to large assembly spaces, such as the Coliseum (and perhaps the Senate building), and were named such because at the end of whatever event people were attending, they would 'spew forth' from this opening out into the street / plaza.
LOL! I always appreciate history lessons. Am I wrong as well about the practice of vomiting in order to continue feasting? Is that historical conjecture based on a misunderstanding of the architectural jargon?
Because the metaphor of decadent members of the ruling class continuing to return to a feast long after being sated is both vivid and particularly apt.
I am not sure if the practice was real or not. There has been some conjecture that it was a misconception based on this architectural term, though:
https://theconversation.com/mythbusting-ancient-rome-the-truth-about-the-vomitorium-71068
It seems to have been real although perhaps not widespread.
Suetonius wrote a history on the lives of the using court records. while Cassius Dio was a Roman Statesman and historian who published over 80 volumes on the Roman past. Suetonius records that Emperor Claudius always finished his meals by being excessively bloated with food and wine. To deal with this, Claudius would lie down and have a feather inserted into his throat to induce vomiting. This would clear his stomach and allow him to continue feasting.
Cassius Dio writes of the Emperor Vitellius, who used to feast four times a day. He would like to sample foods from all across the empire and would taste everything that he could get his hands on. He tried exotic foods, which included of pheasants and flamingo tongues. Cassius claims that to keep eating, the emperor would vomit so that he could continue to consume food.
I fell down into this rabbit hole, thanks for setting the record straight!
https://www.historicmysteries.com/vomitorium/
So What Was A Vomitorium?
Vomitoria certainly existed for the Romans, but in a very different sense. They were definitely known by the fourth century AD, when Macrobius, a Roman provincial and writer, used the word to refer to amphitheater passageways that “disgorged” its patrons to their seats. In this context they are simply passageways, and those in the Colosseum in Rome were apparently so efficient that with 76 different “vomitoria”, the venue of 50,000 could be filled in 15 minutes.
It is easy to see why there was a misconception between the words and the meaning behind them. However, why was it so easy to believe this about the Romans? Literature and films are littered with depictions of the wretched excesses of Roman emperors and their subjects, who are commonly depicted as wealthy and living lives of leisure.
Contemporary Roman social commentators such as Pliny the Elder and Seneca described their behavior in such a way. Overindulgences of some nobles provided accounts and incidents provided much source material for a derogatory picture of Rome. They used their writings to criticize their peers and hopefully encourage better behavior in Rome.
It was writings like this that inspired urban historian Lewis Mumford to misunderstand the vomitorium in his work “The City in History”. He recorded that “overzealous Roman eaters would throw up the contents of their stomachs”. They would do this, he claimed, so that they could return to their couches and continue the party. It should be noted that Mumford did correct himself and later link the vomitorium to exits from a theatre.
They are both bad on spending. The Democrats being worse.
That makes the Republicans the better party, right? Well, no, at least not since they sold out to an incompetent huckster, and then tried to overthrow an election.
Both sides!
"...That makes the Republicans the better party, right? Well, no, at least not since they sold out to an incompetent huckster, and then tried to overthrow an election."
Yes, it does, and your combination of being a TDS-addled, lying asshole has no effect on that.
Spending is still spending and that means borrowing more money from the Fed, which means deeper debt for the nation.
Politicians don't care, at least most of them don't.
The latest so called infrastructure bill is nothing more than a pay out to the loyal.
And it's going to cost everybody else. Higher taxes, higher prices at the grocery store....but you've already noticed that. The worst of it though is the ever mounting debt the nation has incurred due to irresponsible government.
A debt we will never be able to pay off.
"The CDC is going to say that what you should do is, everyone under the age of 12 should probably be wearing masks in school," Biden said during the event in Cincinnati, Ohio. "That's probably what's going to happen."
Probably our fearless leader is not in charge.
After Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi refused to accept two Republican nominees—Reps. Jim Jordan (R–Ohio) and Jim Banks (R–Ind.)—to the panel
Some Democrat congresscreature claimed it was because Jordan and Banks are not "patriots".
Are we still allowed to describe people as "patriots?" I thought it was hate speech...
The missing statistic is hospitalizations. I see scary graphs of new cases. That's definitely peaking. And I see graphs of deaths. Fairly flat. Yes, here's a lag between infection and death, so we should be seeing a smallish spike in deaths in about two weeks.
But flattening the curve, getting respirator supply lines, actual treatments, oldsters mostly vaccinated, etc., have lowered the deaths tremendously, but it doesn't stop the hospitalizations.
So the charts we need to see are the hospitalizations. And those charts and numbers are very hard to come by. That's ALWAYS been the important statistic, but it's the one hardest to get. Maybe because journalists can't handle all the syllables in "hospitalization". Gosh, that's six syllables!
It's a myth that you either die or it's just a case of the minor sniffles. Fucking bullshit. If it's bad enough to send you to the hospital then it's pretty fucking bad. Those hospitalization numbers are in many ways the most important statistics for the public to see. That's the true measure of whether we've got a grip on this crisis. And we just don't know.
Stay at home.
With 3 masks on.
Hopefully with a plastic bag over his head for extra safety.
The problem with the hospitalization statistics is that they always are "people in the hospital who tested positive for COVID". That is not the number that matters. The number that matters is people who are in the hospital because of COVID. And the numbers have been so dishonest and inflated during this entire thing, that number is impossible to find as far as I can tell.
Ultimately, the death numbers matter as much or more than the hospital numbers. If the stuff is treatable such that even if you do go in the hospital you are unlikely to die, that makes it much less of a problem than previously thought. And the death numbers are sitting at a seven day average of 254 per day. In a country of over three hundred million, that is pretty insignificant. And the daily death rate has been flat at that rate for several months now.
> The number that matters is people who are in the hospital because of COVID.
Which is a number my county provides. There's no reason everywhere else can't do the same. If we know enough that we can determine that a death was COVID related and post graphs of that, then we know enough that we can determine if someone is in the hospital for COVID. It's not about playing with the numbers, it's about looking at the flipping admission form.
But you need counties and states asking for that information, just like they do for cases and deaths. If its' not being collected then it can't be made available.
During the past several weeks, hospital admissions due to Covid have more than doubled in the UK (up from 26 to 58 admissions per million people), while hospital admissions due to Covid in the US have increased from 40 to 55 admissions per million.

At what point do people just finally learn to live with the risk and go back to living their lives? You can't end civilization over the fear of a virus. Maybe you can put it on hold for a while in hopes it goes away. At some point, however, if it doesn't, you have to just resign yourself to the risk and go back to living your life.
Before the invention of penicillin, most viruses and sickness were basically untreatable. If you got the, the doctors could make you comfortable but couldn't do anything except hope your immunity fought it off. People panic over COVID, what do you think the mortality rate of untreated strep throat or a staff infection is? A lot higher than COVID. And yet, we managed to build the entirety of human civilization while living with that risk.
> At what point do people just finally learn to live with the risk and go back to living their lives?
We basically have. And not just the Republicans. This isn't a partisan thing. Younger people are mostly ignoring the rules and getting on with their lives. Which may be a big source of this recent spike. Most businesses in my very lockdown-friendly area are open again for full onsite employee presence. There are still mask signs around, but then again there are still "no shirt no shoes no service" signs still around. Not everyone has been vaccinated, the virus is still spreading, so some minimal caution is still in place. But we're past the "OMG shut it all down!" phase.
Now I do think we'll get a major spike in winter. Especially with so many people still refusing to get vaccinated. And so we'll probably have another lockdown. I predicted this last year. It's how communicable respiratory diseases work, they peak in the winter months. I mean, duh.
But we're essentially past the lockdowns. Now it's mostly just government faffing around the edges, like schools and stuff.
It is not a partisan thing. It is an ability to weigh risk and face your own mortality thing. And yes, people largely have. I live in a deeply blue area and things are back to normal. You still see idiots wearing masks everywhere but they are much fewer in number than they were. And you don't see anyone not going about their normal lives. Just that some of them do so wearing the magic talisman known as a mask.
I figured that this would happen long before it did. I am shocked that it took this long and was frankly starting to give up on it ever happening. Luckily it has. And I think the fact that it has happened is going to make scaring people back into their homes over variants and such impossible.
That said, the one exception to all of this is California. From what I can tell California is still in full on stupid mode. I am not sure what can be done to save it.
Yeah. It's not partisan. If anything it's more a class division. While the upper classes could hide away all year, the people who actually had to go out in the world and work actually had to deal with wearing a mask for long periods, which sucks and isn't very healthy, and also saw that everyone wasn't dying in the streets because they didn't isolate.
The working class are as a group much more sensible, less easily manipulated and less superstitious than the upper classes.
less easily manipulated
lol
It is true. Only someone who has never been exposed to both could think otherwise. Name any form of superstition in this society and it is primarily the upper class that adheres to it. It isn't the working class who were refusing to vaccinate their kids. It was upper class whites. It isn't the working class who believe in things like Scientology and transgenderism and such. It is the upper class. Indeed, it was the upper class and particularly university students who were the earliest and most enthusiastic adopters of fascism.
Your ignorance and status anxiety are showing here. Status anxiety and general insecurity are the main reasons why the upper classes are so superstitious and easily manipulated. You should work on that.
"Name any form of superstition in this society and it is primarily the upper class that adheres to it. "
I feel like they are probably as superstitious, that is probably pretty well spread out and likely decreases at higher levels of intellect (not education, intellect).
In terms of the masks and such, I feel like it came down to what people experienced and practicality. We had a beach house last summer and had 8 people there (spoiler: no one got COVID). It was everyones choice to do what they wanted we just asked about symptoms and exposure. Beyond that everyone was free to do what they wanted.
5/8 were in more normal jobs that went to a job site or office (or hospital in our case) daily and were used to being around people, masking all the time when we had to and taking them off as soon as we could (2 worked in construction, so they were used to wearing it to job site then immediately taking it off ASAP). 3/8 are work from home pajama liberals (they are tolerable in small doses). They showed up in masks and even made a comment about how they were surprised no one else was wearing them.
Guess what though...by day 2 they were mask free the rest of the trip. Once they got tired of virtue signaling with their masks on, socially distanced at the pool (and seeing us all have a not lame time) they eventually gave up the shenanigans.
Most regular people that go out to a job frequently have already had their fill of all this, saw that the world wasnt ending, and got used to being around people (esp outside) with no mask. The pajama class was just a little behind from a year of watching CNN and sanitizing their uber eats packaging.
Sure, the ones who fell for a bigoted demagogue riding down a golden escalator and proclaiming "I alone can fix it" are the ones who are "less easily manipulated". Sure, just go with that.
I mean he said "working class" and you immediately assumed this was "trump supporters". Your contrast to "upper class" is trump supporters.
You realize there are a lot of lower class dems not getting the vax too right? A lot of them are actually black and hispanic.
Cover up a little, your elitism is showing.
chemtard radical deathfat seems to have forgotten about "hope and change."
You stupid fat fuck.
Haha. Yeah. Or, maybe the dems just ran an awful candidate?
If you’d admit that the dems own some responsibility instead of just smirking at the “easily manipulated” rubes, you might not be such a smug asshole.
That's not to say they can't be manipulated. But I think Briggs has it right. The working classes are much more skeptical of what their "betters" tell them.
The working classes are much more skeptical of what their “betters” tell them.
And much less skeptical about what their crazy Uncle Fester told them, or what some smart-sounding guy on a Youtube video told them, because what they said confirms their pre-existing biases.
By the way, I am not arguing either for or against one class of people being more or less easily manipulated than another. Everyone is susceptible to being manipulated in different ways. I just categorically reject that there are some broad classes of people who can defy human nature far more than others.
"And much less skeptical about what their crazy Uncle Fester told them, or what some smart-sounding guy on a Youtube video told them, because what they said confirms their pre-existing biases."
I mean my inbred uncle fester and the guy on youtube both make a significantly better argument than you do, which I could have put together by reading the NYT this am and watching Brian Stelter.
Most of your arguments are nothing more than the daily strawmen or motte/bailey that the MSM is putting out. My uncle fester would honestly embarrass you, you probably dont want to take him on.
I was amazed that everyone didn't get over it a year ago and get on with their lives. I concluded that the risk was quite tolerable once that first cruise ship data came out.
"The missing statistic is hospitalizations. I see scary graphs of new cases...."
Hey, you got what you wanted, TDS-addled asshole. Grow crawl back in the septic tank you crawled out of and STFU.
I look forward to a world without obese people hogging the aisles at the grocery store in their electric carts.
"...They may be partially effective in shielding adults from COVID, but since when is it ethical to burden children for the benefit of adults?"..."
Since about November, 2020.
If CDC issues a guidance recommending mask wearing by all school children all day while in school, the number of students in private schools and home schooled will likely triple, quadruple or more.
It appears that Biden's unwarranted and totalitarian mask mandate for school children might achieve the goals of school choice advocates.
If there is one silver lining in this entire cluster fuck, it is that it may have finally convinced people of the uselessness of public schools. Maybe I am being too optimistic, but I really think that the days of the public schools getting any amount of money they want from the taxpayers because "everyone must care about the children" are over. I also think the days of teachers being held in any regard by anyone are over as well. My entire life I was told how public education was essential to society and how teachers were worthy of the same level of respect as fireman and doctors and police. Time and again I was told what a crime it was that America didn't pay it's teachers the same as it did it's CEOs and so forth.
Well, we had a pandemic and the doctors and the cops and the fireman and the grocery store workers all went to work and kept the country going. And the teachers all hid at home and refused to go back to work pretending that you could teach online just as well as in person. This after decades of demanding endless spending on infrastructure for schools and reducing class sizes and so forth. We had the pandemic and it turns out, we could have been doing the whole thing online the entire time. Who knew?
Not that I ever believed that nonsense, but a lot of people did. From what I can tell, they don't believe it anymore. I really think the bloom is off the rose for public schools and public school teachers. While that doesn't make up for this cluster fuck, it is one hell of a silver lining if it does turn out to be true.
> If there is one silver lining in this entire cluster fuck, it is that it may have finally convinced people of the uselessness of public schools.
My, what an optimist!
My, what a TDDS-addled piece of lefty shit!

Rand Paul is apparently making a criminal referral to the Justice Department in regards to Dr. Fauci lying to Congress:
"During an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Paul was asked whether he thinks Fauci lied with regard to gain-of-function research and broke the law.
“Yes, and I will be sending a letter to the Department of Justice asking for a criminal referral because he has lied to Congress. We have scientists that were lined up by the dozens to say that the research he was funding was gain-of-function,” Paul told Hannity.
“He’s doing this because he has a self interest to cover his tracks and to cover his connection to Wuhan lab. Now does he deserve all the blame? No, there’s still some conjecture as to whether or not it came from the lab. But he’s lying about whether or not he funded gain-of-function research, and yes, he should be punished,” Paul said.

We should expect Biden's Department of Justice to get to prosecuting Dr. Fauci for lying to Congress sometime after they finally get around to prosecuting Lois Lerner and James Clapper. Rand Paul's efforts will do something to make Dr. Fauci's actions a political issue, which is a good thing.
The more the Biden administration and the Democrats feel it necessary to defend Dr. Fauci, the more they make his funding of the Wuhan Institute of Virology an issue--and the more they tangle themselves up in that nasty web. Defending the financing of research to make superviruses transmissible to humans isn't a good look for anybody.
Oh, and for the record, we had a discussion the other day about whether what Facui's NIAID funded at the Wuhan Institute of Virology was in fact, technically, gain of function research. It was my opinion that the genetic engineering that happened prior to making the virus transmissible to humans by way of humanized mice was technically not gain of function research, and all Fauci's NIAID funded was making the viruses transmissible to humans.
After further review, while someone might argue that the NIH's own definition of gain of function research is wrong, that definition appears to include the procedures of making a virus transmissible to humans (rather than just creating a novel virus). In other words, not only was Dr. Fauci wrong to deny that he and the NIH had funded gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but I was wrong about that, as well.
To be clear, I can still be persuaded by facts and logic, but from what I know and understand at the moment, when I said that Dr. Fauci was technically correct, the other day, in claiming that the NIH hadn't funded gain of function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and NOYB2 said I was wrong about that and Fauci was lying--I was wrong and NOYB2 was right.
I still maintain, however, that the American people should be just as horrified by the NIH using a Chinese lab (with ties to the Chinese military and a terrible safety record) to do dangerous research that makes novel superviruses transmissible to humans--regardless of whether it's technically gain of function research by some bureaucrat's definition. We shouldn't let a bureaucrat like Fauci distract us from his dangerous incompetence with red herrings,
That being said, I was wrong and NOYB2 was right. Fauci lied to Congress.
It is beyond doubt at this point that COVID was created in the WUHAN lab. I don't think the Chinese intentionally released it. I think it was released because the Chinese like all communists are amazingly reckless and incompetent.
It is also an established fact that the NIH funded gain of function COVID research at the WUHAN lab as a way to get around the US ban on such research. Was COVID the result of the NIH funded research or research the Chinese were doing alone? That question has not been answered, although there is a pretty good chance it was the result of the NIH research.
As much fun as it is to blame this entire thing on China and as culpable as China is, chances are our own NIH and Fauci in particular are just as responsible. In a sane just world, Fauci and everyone connected with that funding would be spending the rest of their lives in prison.
I wouldn't say it's beyond any doubt, but I will say that by a preponderance of the evidence, at the point, we'd need to make some crazy assumptions to get to the point where the guy holding the smoking gun wasn't the one who fired it.
If not the lab, then from where? There has never been a pandemic virus whose origin was not figured out fairly quickly. In the past these viruses were animal viruses that mutated to the right combination and crossed the species barrier to infect humans. We know the swine flu came from pigs or that H1N1 came from birds and so forth. Yet, here we are almost two years into the this pandemic and with COVID being probably the most studied virus in history and no one has come up with it's origins. It defies all credulity to think that if COVID came from another species and arose naturally that it's origin would not be known by now. If COVID didn't arise in nature, then it must have been created in a lab, unless you want to appeal to extraterrestrial origins which I have never heard anyone do.
Also, the fact that COVID started in the city next to a bioweapons lab that was both known to be doing additive virus research and was operated in such an unsafe manner the US State Department put out a warning about it in 2019 is just too big of a coincidence to ignore.
Science is about falsification. We can't eliminate ALL possible other explanations through affirmative observations in a lab because we can't observe all other possible explanations--including the ones we haven't identified. It will always remain possible that some other source of the virus exists that we're unaware of today. We can never prove that our findings today won't be contradicted by data that newly becomes available tomorrow.
That being said, the scientific consensus, from the available data, should conclude that the virus escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and I'm building my argument for that from the statements of a couple of scientists. I'll link to their statements below. Please note that they are direct quotes from scientists--not mine own. I'm just putting them together to make my argument.
—-General Premise: “In the entire class of coronaviruses that includes CoV-2, the CGG-CGG combination has never been found naturally”.
—-Specific Premise: “It was this exact sequence that appears in CoV-2”.
—-Conclusion: Therefore, “the scientific evidence points to the conclusion that the virus was developed in a laboratory”.

There are only three rational ways to attack my argument.
1) They can attack the facts.
Are the facts wrong?
2) They can attack the logic.
Did I make a mistake in the way the argument was put together? I don't think so. If the premises are true, isn't the conclusion true?
3) They can create their own counterargument.
They need to check their facts, put them together in a way that if the premises are true, then the conclusion is true, and the conclusion needs to contradict mine.
I double dog dare them.
I double dog dare them.
Okay Ken, challenge accepted. That is, if you even bother to read it.
Did I make a mistake in the way the argument was put together? I don’t think so. If the premises are true, isn’t the conclusion true?
Yes Ken, your conclusion is faulty in that it does not include the possibility of natural mutation. This has been pointed out to you before but you choose to ignore it. Evolution itself is the story of "natural mutations that never happened before". That a particular mutation had not yet happened before in nature does not prove that the particular mutation is NOT POSSIBLE to occur in nature, only that it hadn't done so up to that point.
That an event is improbable, does not prove that the event is IMPOSSIBLE. That is the logical error that you are making.
I don't expect you to actually respond to this though, because you don't actually want people to challenge your logic, you want sycophants like the right-wing mean girls around here who do nothing but idolize you and treat you like the God of Logic that strokes your ego.
Yes Ken, your conclusion is faulty in that it does not include the possibility of natural mutation.
Yes it does. Natural mutation is possible. The problem is that there is no way to explain why if the virus is the result of natural mutation from what natural virus this virus originated. In every other case of natural mutation that has been found fairly quickly. Yet, not in this one. That great reduces the likelihood that this is the result of natural mutation. Is it possible? Sure, it is just very unlikely. And what is even more unlikely is that the one virus whose origin is nearly impossible to determine, unlike every other pandemic, just happens to start in the city next to a bioweapons lad where we know additive research into that type of virus was being conducted. What are the chances of that? Vanishingly small as to be unreasonable.
You either lack the intelligence or the honesty to understand the argument here.
"...You either lack the intelligence or the honesty to understand the argument here."
I'm now convinced that he, sarc, turd and a couple of others are so stupid they do not realize that they are lying.
"You either lack the intelligence or the honesty to understand the argument here."
----Briggs Cunningham
This is why so many of us have him muted. He doesn't care about facts or logic, and he doesn't care whether he's wrong or right. He isn't here to learn from other or to inform others. He isn't here to debate. He's just here to disrupt the conversation, and we lose by engaging with him.
The general premise, “In the entire class of coronaviruses that includes CoV-2, the CGG-CGG combination has never been found naturally”, means that despite millions of years of mutations, they have never found a coronavirus that mutated in that way. In fact, virologists engineer viruses with precisely that CGG-CGG combination and use it as a marker--to track their own creations against contamination of their specimens with outside viruses, to mark their creations against control groups, etc.
"Yes, it could have happened randomly, through mutations. But do you believe that? At the minimum, this fact—that the coronavirus, with all its random possibilities, took the rare and unnatural combination used by human researchers—implies that the leading theory for the origin of the coronavirus must be laboratory escape."
----Steven Quay and Richard Muller
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-science-suggests-a-wuhan-lab-leak-11622995184
The standard of proof here is the scientific method, and the scientific method doesn't prove things beyond any doubt. Rather, the scientific consensus makes rational and qualified conclusions based on the currently available data. And here's the conclusion of my argument:
"Therefore, “the scientific evidence points to the conclusion that the virus was developed in a laboratory”.
If the alternative scientific explanation to a genetically engineered virus is that the virus randomly rolled snake eyes six times in a row--and it's never rolled snake eyes before despite millions of rolls of the dice in nature. And virologists engineer their viruses with that specific snake eyes x 6 combination, on purpose, precisely so they can differentiate their own creations from naturally occurring ones? Then the scientific evidenced points to the conclusion that covid-19 was engineered in a lab.
And, yes, the evidence suggests that it came from the same lab in Wuhan that documented engineering coronaviruses like that.
P.S. If it could have been engineered by aliens or been the product of Kremlin espionage and planted in Wuhan to make Fauci look bad, that doesn't mean the scientific evidence doesn't point to it being engineered at the Wuhan Institute of Virology either. There are always alternative explanations, and chatroom trolls can produce them at will. Why bother arguing with the Flat Earth Society or six day creationists? The scientific evidence points to the conclusion that Covid-19 was engineered at the Wuhan Institute of Virology despite the existence of other explanations.
The scientific method does not rule out all other possibilities beyond doubt. It merely identifies the most likely of the explanations that are consistent with the known facts. It can never rule out every possibility because to do so would necessarily require total knowledge of the situation, which is impossible.

He’s just here to disrupt the conversation, and we lose by engaging with him.
LOL I challenge you to show where anything I posted above constitutes "disrupting the conversation", unless you mean "disrupting" to mean "dare to challenge Ken's supposed authority".
You mute me because you can't refute me. You're a coward. A pompous coward.
In fact, virologists engineer viruses with precisely that CGG-CGG combination and use it as a marker
Yes, they do. Virologists also engineer EVERY POSSIBLE COMBINATION of DNA/RNA bases to use as markers for different scenarios and different contexts. Saying "this one sequence is a synthetic marker" is not equivalent to saying "this one sequence is THE ONLY synthetic marker, therefore proof of a synthetic origin". You are making a sneaky leap of logic there.
If the alternative scientific explanation to a genetically engineered virus is that the virus randomly rolled snake eyes six times in a row–and it’s never rolled snake eyes before despite millions of rolls of the dice in nature.
Occam's Razor type logic simply DOES NOT APPLY when it comes to evolution, because evolution is ALL ABOUT statistically improbable mutations and events occurring and therefore generating a new species or a new organism. It is not statistically probable AT ALL that the human species developed at all, yet here we are. "It's statistically improbable" is one of the main arguments that creationists use against evolution. They are right that it is statistically improbable, but that doesn't prove creationism, or intelligent design, or anything of the sort. You are making a similar type of argument - that because this natural mutation is statistically improbable, therefore, there had to have been a synthetic source purposefully created in a lab. It's just that you have replaced God with human beings as the synthetic origin. You are making the same category error that they make - that statistical improbability is enough to discard the thesis of evolution. It is not in their case, and it is not in your case either.
"...You mute me because you can’t refute me. You’re a coward. A pompous coward..."
And you, OTOH, mute me because?
Hint; you're an ignorant, lying piece of lefty shit incapable of adding anything to a real conversation, and those who mute you do so for that reason.
I don't mute assholes like you simply because I don't mute anyone, even assholic pieces of lefty shit like you.
Please, fuck off and die.
Let us know when you roll snake eyes 6 times in a row.
It is possible after all.
Go do it.
We will wait.
hey fvckstick, when are you going to acknowledge you lied for a solid month about CRT being taught in school? You spent a solid month posting dozens of times daily gaslighting and obfuscating. Own up to that, or admit you are hear to obfuscate, distract, and derail.
Aside from your constant dishonesty, let's add stupidity:
"...Occam’s Razor type logic simply DOES NOT APPLY when it comes to evolution, because evolution is ALL ABOUT statistically improbable mutations and events occurring and therefore generating a new species or a new organism..."
Bullshit.
'Improbable' mutants die off.
This is just a nitpick on your description of evolution, not the political part. You actually are nearly falling into the same trap as creationists. Creationists use this argument as if our genes are totally randomly determined and created ex nihilo. It is true that mutations are mostly random, specific base pair mutations have a low probability to occur, and those mutations that do occur have a low probability of having any discernable, if any, effect. However, mutation without specificity is highly probable. Also evolution is both highly non-random (survival and reproduction), builds upon previous working plans, and the mutations occur across multiple individuals. This of course starts to make it much more statistically probable that particular natural mutations will arise as they increase reproductive success.
Also you absolutely can apply Occam's Razor to evolution, and you should! One of the most quoted versions of the razor is "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity". Here the creationists are the ones violating Occam's Razor because they need many ad hoc hypotheses in order to explain away the failures in their theories.
Ken has also ignored statements by experts in the field that there is too much genetic difference between the COVID-19 virus and the viruses the Wuhan lab were experimenting with for the former to be created from the latter.
“Science is about falsification.”
Yet Ken never spends much time looking for evidence that contradicts his pro-Trump Republican conclusions. Even when such evidence is presented to him, he dismisses it as “shit posting”.
And as a TDS-addled lefty asshole, you've yet to make a valid rebuttal of what Ken posts.
IOWs, you are full of shit.
Where are all the speculating Congresscritters and the confidential informants at the alphabet agencies about Wuhangate? Usually something as outrageously scandalous as bureaucrats and political operatives working with foreign governments to produce a super-virus has them crawling out of the woodwork. After 4 years of nonstop leaks and quotes from "people in the room", nothing but crickets...
Everyone had something to say about Kavanaugh's testimony, but now have nothing to say about Fauci. I wonder what the difference is?
Maybe because all the fascists like you are full of it

Ideologically, the progressives are married to the idea of scientific experts lording over us to make us do things for our own good. People like Cuomo and Newsom destroyed businesses and locked millions of people in their homes on the basis of experts like Dr. Fauci.
Fauci is like Janet Reno, when she offered to resign in the wake of okaying the raid that burned dozens of children to death. Clinton couldn't let her do that. It might suggest that they'd made a big mistake that ruined people's lives. No, Janet Reno is an American hero.
Anybody else notice that rand Paul is quoting Ken?
2016 Gain-of-function research definition:
Experimentation that that aims or is expected to increase the transmissibility or virulence of pathogens, or improve understanding of their interaction with humans, and potential to cause pandemics.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27502512/
If Fauci is claiming "experts" say what they did was not gain of function, it's only because they have changed the definition. (You know, like they did with "vaccine" and "herd immunity")
Slow Joe made some mumbling comments, Don Lemon squeed at him, the scant audience half heartedly clapped, and reason koch reported on the one item about masks even though you all fluffed him last year. Your fault.
Masks? Have you seen how often a six-year touches their butt and then their face? What kids need are rigorous hand washing regimens and gloves that they change after every class.
We can't make them smart, but we can make them neurotic.
I know many of you Mormons are pervs, but normal people don’t focus on six year old’s butts.
And which one of is sexualizing children?
I spent a entire year with 2 different 6 year-old boys and had to wash their underwear. Kids infamously touch their butts because they don't always clean themselves properly after pooping and that gets itchy. If they were not forced to bathe on occasion, the amount fecal matter attached to a 6 year-old boy would approach critical mass.
I pity that you may never get to enjoy the joys of fatherhood. What with your hideous physical deformities and mental illness, no sane woman would chance bearing your progeny. Oh, and I shouldn't have to tell you this, but drunken consent is not consent.
Which one of us worships a bunch of polygamists?
What mental illness and physical deformities?
You don’t know what I look like. You did mention a hunchback once and my posture could improve, but I’m no hunchback.

Biden will probably watch Matlock this afternoon prior to his nap.
After watching just several minutes of Don Lemon and Joe Biden on CNN last night, I cannot understand how any poll could find 56% of registered voters still approve of Biden's presidency.

The polling could be as bad as (rigged?) as the polling prior to the last election.

Birds should be wearing masks.
CDC director: Mr President, we recommend kids under 12 where masks in schools.
Joe Biden: what? Kids under 12 masturbate in school! Great idea!
And even though children under 12 cannot yet get vaccinated, there is still scant evidence to suggest they are at risk
No one is looking for evidence either so little surprise it won't be found. The entire universe of children being studied is children who got some serious symptoms. Which is a very small subset of children. What is not being looked for is - is there SOME lasting damage in kids who don't seem to have had symptoms but who now have antibodies. We are so reactive to extreme events - like death as covid outcome - that we are ignoring the very real potential for drip-drip-drip damage to kids. They will be infected with covid many times in their life - the cumulative damage could become a very serious problem if it exists.
This has nothing to do with policy. We can only act on what we know now. But the seeming unwillingness to find out and learn more has everything to do with policy in the future. And that failure is yet another bit of intergenerational destruction - by a generation that spent the last year fucking around with kids present for the convenience of their grandparents present.
12 months from "we are not following the science" to "we should lead the science by the nose".

Oh no, here come the waterworks from all the butthurt Reason writers and commenters about how it's sooooo awful that they'd recommend anything.
Forgot that the CDC should never say or recommend ANYTHING. Who do they think they are, a public health agency?
CDC used to be about health, 50 years ago perhaps. Lately, they’ve been political hacks.
And the assholic lefty shit is about making apologies for anything other lefty shits demand.
They are not a public health agency they are a political agency
They are also perfectly aware that their "recommendations" are being turned into an endless litany of emergency orders.
Man that is crazy. Almost none of the left wingers that show up here on the regular super concerned about black people and civil rights have much to say when it comes to Cuba imprisoning black/brown people without cause, killing peaceful protesters, people living in shit conditions under Cuba's socialism, and black peoples civil (and human) rights being infringed upon.
That's so weird because they show up in droves to support rioting in America when a cop kills a criminal in the process of arresting them. But we have the mass mistreatment of an entire population of POC's, and crickets from them.

Sadly this description also closely resembles the writers here at an ostensibly libertarian magazine.
You mean the ones that suddenly decided the CIA and FBI were above reproach and spent four years carrying water for the Russiagate conspiracy? You mean those guys?

The country will not, I fear, survive this administration. It is doing all it can to destroy what's left in order to create another communist hell on earth.
