Cubans revolt over economic scarcity. Mass protests over Cuba's food and medicine shortages broke out in the Communist country over the weekend. "Our children are dying of hunger," shouted one woman in a video posted to Facebook. All told, hundreds of people in Havana, in San Antonio de los Baños, in Palma Soriano, and elsewhere reportedly took to the street.

Those numbers might not sound so staggering. But "in a country known for repressive crackdowns on dissent, the rallies were widely viewed as astonishing," The New York Times points out. "Activists and analysts called it the first time that so many people had openly protested against the Communist government since the so-called Maleconazo uprising, which exploded in the summer of 1994 into a huge wave of Cubans leaving the country by sea."

Cubans in 2021 are struggling due to government-imposed pandemic lockdowns, which have left many unable to work for months and put a stop to tourism and the money it brings in. The result has been a tanking economy and shortages of basic necessities.

"This is no longer a question of freedom of expression; it's a question of hunger. People are hitting the street. They are asking for an end to this government, to one-party rule, to repression and the misery we have lived through for 60 years," Havana theater director Adonis Milán told the Times.

Cuban government officials are still trying to blame the United States for the situation. For instance, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel claimed the U.S. government is the main entity responsible for Cuba's economic troubles.

Some U.S. outlets have been playing along:

If you're making protests in Cuba out to be anything but a rejection of the communist regime in totality, you're ignoring 62+ years of destruction and pain caused by central planning precipitating peaceful protests.

— Gabriella Hoffman (@Gabby_Hoffman) July 12, 2021

Meanwhile, the Times has been taking some flak for its coverage of the protests, after labeling protesters' cries of "freedom" as shouting "anti-government slogans."

Says OpenSecrets researcher Anna Massoglia on Twitter: "If shouting 'Freedom' is anti-government, there might be something wrong with your government."

Following anti-govt protests, #Cuba's communist regime has allegedly shut down the internet multiple times in the past few hours. There have also been reports of phone lines services being cut off. Cuban authorities have reportedly been shutting down internet access in the country. But videos from the protests have still been spreading:

Texas man prosecuted for voting. A Texas man is facing 40 years in prison for voting while on parole. Hervis Rogers, a 62-year-old man who waited seven hours in line to vote in last year's presidential primary, is now imprisoned on $100,000 bail as he awaits prosecution for voting illegally.

Rogers said he mistakenly thought he was OK to vote in the primary, since he was done serving time. People who have been convicted of felonies in Texas can only vote after serving out their full sentences, including parole. But Texas also says that people must know they're ineligible to vote for it to be considered a crime.

"Rogers's prosecution really shows the danger of overcriminalizing the process of participating in a democratic society," Tommy Buser-Clancy, a senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, told The New York Times. "How the election code is being used to go after individuals who at worst have made an innocent mistake."

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton—who has been a big supporter of former President Donald Trump's unfounded conspiracy theories about mass election fraud—is milking the case for publicity nonetheless.

Hervis is a felon rightly barred from voting under TX law. This liberal NPR article even says so, but buries it: "Rogers voted before his parole was scheduled to end, he was likely ineligible to cast a ballot on Election Day."

I prosecute voter fraud everywhere we find it! https://t.co/cXTjGIXfe1

— Attorney General Ken Paxton (@KenPaxtonTX) July 9, 2021

"Enraged by his inability to find any evidence of the imaginary voter fraud he's been lying about, Ken Paxton decides to make an example of a black parolee who believed he was eligible to vote, as he should have been," comments Cato Institute fellow Julian Sanchez.

      Cubans Cry for 'Freedom'

ENB uses air-quotes for the word "freedom." Why? Is what the Cubans are crying for not really freedom? Does ENB think the only freedom that exists is freedom to obey orders?

      1. ThomasD   4 years ago

Most charitably she might be acknowledging that at least some of the protesters are simply seeking an 'upgrade' to slightly less incompetent form of statism.

Sure it's offensive, stereotypical, and elitist, but it's also one of the criticism they leveled at the TEA parties. So, in that sense, at least she's a consistent elitist.

      2. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

To be fair the NYT article she links to calls the cry 'Freedom' an 'Antigovernment slogan'. Cuban extremists and insurrectionists I guess.

      3. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

Unless you were watching her fingers, she was using quotes, not air quotes. It probably means they were literally shouting, “¡Liberdad!”.

Meanwhile, the Times has been taking some flak for its coverage of the protests, after labeling protesters' cries of "freedom" as shouting "anti-government slogans."

Freedom is an anti-government slogan. The problem with the headline is that we know "anti-government" is an epithet in the minds of the paper's staff.

    3. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

Maybe that was why ENB used air-quotes for the word "freedom." She wanted to endear herself with the Sons and Daughters of Walter Duranty and not offend them.

      1. Mike Laursen   4 years ago

She probably used the quotes (just quotes, not air-quotes) because they were actually shouting in Spanish, not English.

        1. JesseAz   4 years ago

You've stated this twice thinking it makes you seem intelligent (about speaking spanish) when everyone knows that. They are referencing the NYT tweet dummy.

        2. Azathoth!!   4 years ago

She probably used the quotes (just quotes, not air-quotes) because they were actually shouting in Spanish, not English.

You are such a fucking idiot.

As Jesse notes, you keep suggesting this--that the quotes were to indicate that they were speaking spanish.

They weren't. The quotes were used, being as charitable as possible, to encompass all the things they were shouting which amounted to a cry for freedom.

They were not standing around shouting 'freedom' --they were protesting against communist oppression.

But, given the disgusting new politics on display at reason, it is far more likely that the quotes were used to denigrate the very idea of freedom.

  12. JesseAz   4 years ago

Almost a decent explainer by ENB. She got the NYT quote in. Ironically she doesn't see the similarities between the Cuban government shutting down the internet as compared to silicon valley colluding to shitndown stories dangerous to the DNC.

Twitter even got in on the action by saying the protests were about covid and not against the government. .

People are helping to spread awareness on the impact of COVID-19 in Cuba as cases hit an all-time high in the country,

Which aligns woth the messaging from the white house and state department. They seem to be claiming the protests aren't against the marxost government. It is complete gaslighting. State dept for example:

Julie Chung, Acting Assistant Secretary for U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, tweeted, “Peaceful protests are growing in #Cuba as the Cuban people exercise their right to peaceful assembly to express concern about rising COVID cases/deaths & medicine shortages. We commend the numerous efforts of the Cuban people mobilizing donations to help neighbors in need.”

Psaki followed up on a podcast with the same messaging.

Maybe reason can finally take a hint that the democrats aren't actually for freedom at this point.

      1. Bill Godshall   4 years ago

        According to https://bnonews.com/index.php/2020/08/covid-19-reinfection-tracker/
only 149 cases of covid reinfection have occurred worldwide, including just 14 in the US.

Looks like 99.999% of people who have had covid remain immune.

"Rogers said he mistakenly thought he was OK to vote in the primary, since he was done serving time. People who have been convicted of felonies in Texas can only vote after serving out their full sentences, including parole."

Will someone please query: if an individual is deemed "safe enough" to be allowed to retake their place in society (though still under supervision), then under what logic are they not "safe enough" to vote?

    1. JesseAz   4 years ago

Would you rather parole not exist at all? It is an agreement for freedom from prison with repercussions if you break the agreement. It is beneficial to the prisoner. Without parole he would still be in jail for his original sentence.

      1. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

        Hey Jesse, good morning.

I understand that, I just don't understand the logic behind it. We parole violent offenders into a world full of potential weapons which might "tempt" them to resume their life-style, for instance, so I don't have a problem attempting to restrict their access to weapons until they have successfully completed their parole. But this makes little sense.

        1. JesseAz   4 years ago

It was a known restriction on him prior to him committing the crime. He is probably also barred from drugs and alcohol, has to check in monthly, etc. It is the terms society put on him for early release. He violated those terms.

          1. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

And I recognize that, as well. But if reintegration into "polite society" is the goal, restoring their right to vote. which is major symbol of both freedom and responsibility, might actually help promote a more productive life-style. And though that is probably wishful thinking, I still don't see much of a downside.

            1. JesseAz   4 years ago

I dont think voting adds productivity either way. More than half of Americans don't vote.

It is more productive for him to understand how to live with agreements he has made in my opinion.

              1. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

And that is not an unreasonable stance.

By the way... if you think it is no big deal...

One of the big controversies of the first Al Franken election was the fact that a Democrat group there actively sought out and got people ineligible to vote, due to felonies, to vote illegally in his election. While never confirmed it is believed the number of illegal felon votes was greater than the difference in votes.

Elections have rules. Changing them outside of normal course is simply cheating. If you dont like the no parole voting law, seek to change it. Don't just ignore it.

      1. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

Jesse, that is a completely different issue. I am not promoting or supporting violating the law. I am questioning this particular form of punishment, seeing that is (ostensibly), the coal of the justice system to help reintegrate folks back into society, rather than keep them on the edges of it.

        1. Don't look at me!   4 years ago

.. the coal of the justice system to help reintegrate folks back into society,
          There’s your problem right there.
The real goal is to keep folks under the thumb of the justice system. Setting people free doesn’t keep the folks in the justice system employed.

We don't deny them, we invalidate them. As consequence for bad behavior.

Yes it's the Nietzschean approach. Some people choose to behave properly because it is morally right, but many others choose to behave because they fear the consequences of doing otherwise.

That means there must be real consequences. That some are permanent is a feature, not a bug.

          1. ThomasD   4 years ago

Personal example. I'm a hunter, I've hunted all over this country, and trespassing is often a concern when wandering near private property. In many places this is treated quite casually, to the annoyance of landowners (including myself.) But I've also hunted in Florida. Where armed trespass is legally defined as a felony offense. That makes you really careful when you come across a fence line where you didn't expect one.

            1. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

I understand what you are saying, but I still don't see how denying (or nullifying) a 62-year-old man's ability to vote (this particular case) helps build a better society. There are other things laws are used to deny, limit, (or nullify) rights and privileges which arguably, can, at lease in principle, lead to a more peaceable society. I just don't feel this particular one fits that goal.

          2. CLM1227   4 years ago

This is, in effect, modern society’s alternative to banishment. I’d almost rather have banishment and a legitimate no-man’s land where government and society are not overseeing the criminals that populate it. Cranks and outlaws can form their own societies more to their keeping if they don’t like our laws.

But to pretend that people who don’t want to live by society’s laws have every right to participate in said society is a little misguided, in my opinion.

            1. ThomasD   4 years ago

"But to pretend that people who don’t want to live by society’s laws have every right to participate in said society is a little misguided, in my opinion."

This. It's a continuum, go far enough we will permanently remove you from ordinary society. If there were still far off uninhabited lands where you could be deposited and left to fend for yourself I'd be ok with that. But, at some point, you have crossed a line that says you are not even worth the time, expense, and danger associated with keeping you imprisoned for life.

Yes, killing is permanent. But, due to the arrow of time, all punishment leaves some permanent effects, if only time lost. But the hope is that it corrects or at least inhibits further bad behavior.

If punishment didn't leave lasting effects there would be no point punishing anyone ever.

There is no 'surrogacy' for same sex couples. You can't combine two sperm or two eggs and get anything that will ever grow into anything--no matter who you try to implant it in.

Same sex couples get pregnant the only way possible--with a male gamete, a female gamete and a female with a working uterus.

Andrew Sullivan of all fucking people notices that something very wrong is going on:

    https://nypost.com/2021/07/11/its-bigger-than-crt-radical-ideologies-transforming-us/

Take a big step back. Observe what has happened in our discourse since around 2015. Forget CRT for a moment and ask yourself: is nothing going on here but Republican propaganda and guile? Can you not see that the Republicans may be acting, but they are also reacting — against something that is right in front of our noses?

What is it? It is, I’d argue, the sudden, rapid, stunning shift in the belief system of the American elites. It has sent the whole society into a profound cultural dislocation. It is, in essence, an ongoing moral panic against the specter of “white supremacy,” which is now bizarrely regarded as an accurate description of the largest, freest, most successful multiracial democracy in human history.

We all know it’s happened. The elites, increasingly sequestered within one political party and one media monoculture, educated by colleges and private schools that have become hermetically sealed against any nonleft dissent, have had a “social justice reckoning” these past few years. And they have been ideologically transformed, with countless cascading consequences.

    1. JesseAz   4 years ago

It is the new Red Guard. They are openly talking about harm and socially stigmatizing the unwashed non believers. They are openly talking of redoing stock markets and FICO with an emphasis on acceptable beliefs. This started wY before 2015 though, see Operation Chokepoint.

Thanks for the link. It would appear that Sullivan is still coming to grips with his role in the whole mess, and is not yet willing to recognize how much Obama is part and parcel of it.

      Rock bottom awaits him.

      1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

Sullivan usually has a tendency to ostrich when that happens, but sometimes reality strikes him. He was a huge cheerleader for the Iraq war and Bush, until he finally realized what a disaster it was and then flipped. Maybe he'll reach that point with Obama one day.

    3. Jerryskids   4 years ago

Observe what has happened in our discourse since around 2015.

Since Trump, you mean. I would suggest you might want to observe what happened in our discourse since about 2008, when any criticism of a black man suddenly became racist and got you barred from the conversation of polite society.

  28. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

The Cuban situation may be prove to be an early crisis for the Biden administration, but it might pale in comparison to the problems in Haiti. Both of them could combine into an immigration crisis that would make the one on our border with Mexico look like a walk in the park.

Haiti is on the brink of civil war, and Joe Biden just declined the Haitian government's request for U.S. troops. That's the right move, if civil war breaks out, and it looks like it probably will, the people there won't stay in Haiti. They'll get on anything that floats and make their way to Florida by the millions.

The same thing will happen in Cuba if the government become preoccupied with staying in power. There have been waves of refugees fleeing from Cuba in the past under these circumstances, and U.S. policy under presidents like Clinton and Obama was about preventing waves of refugees from flooding Texas and Florida.

If both Cuba and Haiti have concurrent crises, Biden will be a really tough position on what to do with the refugees. Our interests in Haiti, from Aristide to the earthquake in 2010, were primarily about preventing waves of refugees, and our policy in regards to Cuba has largely been about sending Cubans back to Cuba if they're traveling by boat.

Nothing good can happen for the Biden administration if they're forced to choose between taking in hundreds of thousands to millions of Cubans and Haitians or using the Coast Guard to intercept them and either put them in third country refugee camps or send them back from where they came.

All those beach condo owners from New York are just gonna love having hundreds of thousands refugees living in a camp next door.

    1. ThomasD   4 years ago

"Haiti is on the brink of civil war"

Our church has been involved with mission work in Haiti for quite some time - a school and clinic in a town on the southern peninsula, and my family has been their twice.

The people we have stayed in contact with on social media are in a state of panic like I've never seen. Not even during the Earthquake. Too many people, far removed from the politics of Port Au Prince, are telling anyone and everyone they can "I need to get out, right now!"

I found this report from Reuters to be disturbing.

        https://rumble.com/vjp9q7-powerful-gang-boss-wades-into-haiti-turmoil.html

The leader of a nine affiliated gangs is calling for "legitimate violence" again the country's elite--of Syrian and Lebanese ancestry?

For all I know, that elite really was responsible for taking out the president for threatening their livelihoods, but even if they weren't, a street war between gangs and a wealthy ethnic minority doesn't sound like the road to peace amid the economic collapse brought on by the pandemic as well as the effects of the pandemic itself.

I hope this comes to a peaceful resolution, but that isn't what I'd expect.

P.S. It's nice to see Reuters on Rumble. Reason might consider doing likewise.

He'll try to play both sides of restricting refugees and welcoming refugees--and accomplish nothing on either side of the equation.

The worst solution would have been to answer the Haitian government's request for U.S. troops and give the Haitians one enemy to unify against--us.

        I'm glad he avoided that.

        1. ThomasD   4 years ago

IMO the best thing we can do is pick a side, and tell that side they are responsible for distributing the aid we are surely going to send and that if they do not do a good job we will find another side who can.

There is no beef in a Cuban sandwich.

        It was invented in Tampa.

          1. ThomasD   4 years ago

It is a pressed sandwich. The bread is really the key - Cuban bread is a variation on a baguette or Italian bread. The mistake most make is overloading the sandwich, after pressing the filling should be less thick than the bread.

My favorite variation is replacing the ordinary ham with hot capicolla.

The key to a Reuben is the ingredients.

Do not go the grocery store.

Jewish rye. With a real crust. Go to the Jewish bakery.

Corned beef. Go to the deli where they cook it up every day and slice it up to order and put it in a paper wrapper.

Sauerkraut. If it came in a jar toss it down the sink.

Swiss cheese. Sliced from a block.

Russian dressing. It ain’t ketchup and Mayo.

      https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/russian-dressing-51182860

Butter both slices of bread. Put it together and grill both sides until the cheese melts and bread is golden brown.

4chan's greatest hoax continues bearing fruit:

Universal Orlando is sued for $30K over photos of actor dressed as Minions villain Gru 'flashing white supremacist "OK" sign in photos with two young girls of color'

Two families are suing Universal Orlando for $30,000 after an actor dressed as the Despicable Me villain Gru allegedly flashed a 'white power' sign in photos with young girls of color.

The lawsuit - filed in Orange County, Florida on June 23 - includes the photos from February and March 2019 with the character making an upside-down 'OK' hand gesture adopted by white supremacist groups in both...'This white power hand signal has become openly and widely used to express hatred towards a segment of the population based upon a person's race, color and national origin, and it has prevalently and commonly been known as a hate symbol for years.'

Should voting be a right, or a privilege?

If voting is a right, then why should it not be afforded to every eligible citizen, with only very very few exceptions (such as the mentally ill)? Why shouldn't individuals on parole, deemed at least safe enough to be a part of civil society once again, have their right to a vote respected?

If voting is a privilege, then what ought to be the qualifications and tests that a citizen ought to meet in order to earn this privilege of voting? Obviously obtaining a voter ID. Any others?

    1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

If voting is your right, why and how do you think that presenting ID impinges on it?

      1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

*IF* a requirement for a voter ID is in effect a stealth poll tax, then it transforms the supposed right to vote into a mere privilege.

I do think that there ought to be a voter ID requirement for voting. But the burden on the citizen for obtaining it should be de minimis. In other Western countries, the government will actually automatically register to vote every eligible citizen once he/she reaches voting age, and will automatically mail voting credentials to every eligible voter, so that the voter doesn't have to jump through hoops or wait in long lines at some government bureau in order to obtain their credentials. That is the type of voter ID system that I favor. Do you?

        1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

"*IF* a requirement for a voter ID is in effect a stealth poll tax"

That "if" is doing a lot of heavy lifting because it is in no way, shape, or form, a stealth poll tax.

Everyone, even poor black people, already have ID which they use for cashing cheques, driving a car, getting loans, buying beer and cigarettes, using their credit card, taking a flight, etc.
Showing it to verify you're identity and stop the Democrats frauding, is just another use of something everyone has.

The fact that you think most black people don't already have ID and use it in their daily lives is beyond racist.

Voting, since it requires the willing participation of others, simply cannot be a right.

We do call it a 'civil right,' but this is simply a new term for what the Constitution called a privilege.

          1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

Voting, since it requires the willing participation of others, simply cannot be a right.

Sure it can. It's just not a negative right, like the right to free speech.

We do call it a ‘civil right,’ but this is simply a new term for what the Constitution called a privilege.

The Constitution as amended does refer to "the right to vote". So not even the Constitution refers to it as a mere privilege.

But if you think voting ought to be a privilege, then what are the conditions or qualifications that you think potential voters ought to meet in order to be afforded the privilege of voting?

            1. ThomasD   4 years ago

Screw your 'negative' right sophistry. There are rights and then there is everything else. Everything else is not a right.

The Constitutional "right to vote" you cite presumes an election.

Or do we all have an individual right to election?

It's all privilege. Get over it.

              1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

Screw your ‘negative’ right sophistry. There are rights and then there is everything else. Everything else is not a right.

                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_and_positive_rights

So when the Sixth Amendment says, "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial,..." what precisely is being referred to in this phrase? Not a right?

You are letting your CDS (chemjeff derangement syndrome) get the best of you.

                1. ThomasD   4 years ago

"what precisely is being referred to in this phrase?"

                  A right.

The right to a "speedy trial" is the same right as the right that protects event you and anyone else from any sort of unlawful or unjust detainment. In this case it is just specific to an accused person. Because to allow an accused to languish without trial is the same as there never being a trial.

                  You really are really dumb.

                  1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

But a "right to a speedy trial" is a positive right. Someone has to pay for the judges and lawyers and jurors, and usually that's taxpayers.

So would a "right to vote" be in a similar vein? A positive right that is implemented at public expense?

                    1. ThomasD   4 years ago

"But a “right to a speedy trial” is a positive right. Someone has to pay for the judges and lawyers and jurors, and usually that’s taxpayers."

No it is not a 'positive right' no matter what you may have read. The right to speedy trial is the same as the right to trial (surely you have heard "justice delayed is justice denied)) which is the same as the right to not be unlawfully or unjustly detained, which is all part of the right to privacy/right to be left alone. I've already made that clear. You are, as you always do, willfully ignoring that which you find inconvenient. Because you are a dishonest weak minded little fuck.

                    2. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

So you are just going to ignore that in order for the "right to a speedy trial" to be fulfilled, that there must be judges and lawyers and jurors who must be compensated (generally by the state) to work on behalf of the court to conduct such a trial?

The 'right to be left alone' is a negative right because it doesn't require anything of anyone, simply the absence of action by everyone else. But a 'right to a speedy trial' is a positive right because it requires the deliberate action of a whole host of people in order to see that right protected and fulfilled. The two rights are not synonymous.

It is the same with the 'right to vote'. Someone has to pay for printing the ballots and counting the ballots and renting establishments on Election Day. That's generally taxpayers who pay for it. That is why it's a positive right.

I'm right, you know I'm right, but you can't admit it because that would be conceding defeat to a 'fly' and your ego can't handle that.

                    3. Nardz   4 years ago

                      Chemjeff is a fucking idiot.

The right to trial presupposes action upon an individual by the state and/or state actors.
If the state is going to act upon an individual, that individual has the right to various responses. The State then has a duty to fulfill the requirements it initiated by taking action upon the individual.

              2. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

But more to the point, if you view voting to be a privilege, then what should be the requirements that citizens have to meet in order to have earned the privilege of voting?

                1. ThomasD   4 years ago

"what should be the requirements that citizens have to meet in order to have earned the privilege of voting?"

                  Well, citizenship, obviously.

So really you are only begging the question of what is citizenry. Because having decided that you also have the answer to your own question.

                  Lord you are thick.

                  1. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

                    Well, citizenship, obviously.

Is that it? The only requirement? So the individual in this article, who is being prosecuted because he voted while on parole in violation of Texas law, you would agree that the law in question is unjust and he should have his right to vote respected by the state of Texas, then?

I see no reason to engage you in a discussion over the meaning of meritless and meaningless terms such as ‘positive rights.’

Here is an article from FEE discussing the perils of positive rights.

                      https://fee.org/articles/the-perils-of-positive-rights/

They aren't in favor of positive rights, but they do not think it is a 'meritless' or 'meaningless' term. It has meaning, they just aren't in favor of it.

Is this what you mean when you think of 'positive rights'? That it is a term that has meaning, and perhaps some merit, but you don't agree with it?

                    5. ThomasD   4 years ago

Obama also used to speak of positive rights. Why didn't you cite him instead of some FEE article?

Oh, because you are attempting to make an argument from authority.

                      LOL.

                    6. chemjeff radical individualist   4 years ago

So this is where you are so intellectually fragile and uncertain of your own capacities that you won't even consider an argument that comes from the "wrong people". That maybe you'll get tricked and duped into supporting a bad idea because you don't have the intellectual chops to debate an idea on its own merits without reference to who said it and why.

If Obama talked about positive rights, then positive rights don't exist, because you hate Obama. That is about the extent of your intellectual prowess here.

If you don't want to fight chemjeff, don't, but to claim distinctions like positive & negative rights are meritless and meaningless shows your ignorance more than anything else as the exact opposite is true (when discussing the US Constitution).

Additionally outside of why those terms are meaningful, in any debate, defining major terms and agreeing upon them is always useful. It always helps to ensure you and your opponent mean the same thing when you use critical terms (which terms to be defines depends upon the scope of the debate).

Kamala Harris Claims It’s ‘Almost Impossible’ For Rural Americans To Make A Photocopy

    1. Jerryskids   4 years ago

The most aggravating thing about this "Kamala Harris is an idiot" flap is that they're criticizing the fact that Harris is an idiot rather than the fact that Harris is lying about being concerned about rural folks. She's against voter ID laws because it prevents the Democrats from inventing voters and ballots in the big cities, rural areas voted for Trump. Stop making fun of her for not knowing Kinko's has been out of business for years and thinking country folks have no access to the electricity necessary to run Xerox machines and thinking Xerox machines are still the way we send documents to one another and call her out on her lying about giving a fuck about rural folks.

      1. ThomasD   4 years ago

Gotta disagree, the most annoying thing about the Kamala is an idiot flap is that Kamala is, indeed, and idiot.

    2. The Encogitationer   4 years ago

I guess she thinks they just put their ID under a piece of paper and pencil over the imprint.

Serious question, how was he able to vote?

    1. Longtobefree   4 years ago

Maybe parolees are given a ID that does not require photocopying?

    2. buckleup   4 years ago

Excellent question. It appears it's easy to register and vote in Texas despite the left wing's whiny little girl crying over it. Even if you're a felon on parole.

      1. Brandybuck   4 years ago

Maybe because registrars aren't checking prison databases. While it is public information, one has to specifically search for it.

    3. Dillinger   4 years ago

well beyond easy to vote in Dallas.

    4. JFree   4 years ago

Whether the vote was counted is merely what the prosecution is alleging. I assume it did but the state has to prove that. If the state is limiting the franchise, then it should be the state that is responsible for making sure the admin processes are followed according to law. Not the voters for failing to know how the state fails to do its job. And the TX Attorney General is not even charging him in the county where he lived and voted. They are charging him in a neighboring county that just happens to be white

The $100,000 bail is fucking repugnant. The bail bond fee costs 10-15% so he is going to have to eat $10-15k merely to get out of jail even if he shows and is determined not guilty or the case is dropped.

I'll remember this Paxton guy if he ever tries for national office. Everything about him screams evil piece of shit.

They did the same thing with experimental vaccines during Gulf War I. Didn't turn out so well for a lot of soldiers.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   4 years ago

Yeah, although the vaccines can probably be taken with decent confidence now, due to how many have gotten it, the military's adventures with the anthrax vaccine in the 90s and early 2000s, or the swine flu vaccine in 1976, should be taken into account before making any non-certified vaccine mandatory.

    > A Texas man is facing 40 years in prison for voting while on parole.

One cannot form an opinion on this without first knowing if he voted for or against Trump. It's not fraud if he voted for Trump, it's evidence of massive systemic fraud if he voted for anyone else.

      2. Jerryskids   4 years ago

If you didn't have time to read the whole article, I can give you the tl;dr version.

        1) OrangeManBad. Although what exactly Trump had to do with Australia's trade numbers isn't clear.

        2) Australia's trade position is in the shitter, they're only 11th in the rankings, slightly above average for the countries surveyed.

        3) Australia's trade position wouldn't be in the shitter if only they were friendlier with China.

Not mentioned in the article, one main category of Australia's exports to China that took a big hit: Coal. Clean, renewable, environmentally-friendly coal.

        1. Claptrap   4 years ago

          3) Australia’s trade position wouldn’t be in the shitter if only they were friendlier with China.

I'm guessing most of the list will correlate with this, no? UK being an obvious outlier with the Brexit fallout.

It's no longer about economics on this count: the west needs to disentangle itself from China and we're going to have to eat a lot of shit to get there. To date we've been selling them the rope with which they plan to hang us.

Statement by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. on Protests in Cuba
    JULY 12, 2021
    •
    STATEMENTS AND RELEASES
We stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba’s authoritarian regime. The Cuban people are bravely asserting fundamental and universal rights. Those rights, including the right of peaceful protest and the right to freely determine their own future, must be respected. The United States calls on the Cuban regime to hear their people and serve their needs at this vital moment rather than enriching themselves.

Read that last sentence. Asshole's doing just that thru his asshole son openly.
We have peaceful protesters locked up still after half a year.
