Contrary to What Biden Says, Gun Show Sales Aren't Exempt From Background Checks

Setting the record straight on gun show sales. In announcing new gun control plans yesterday, President Joe Biden commented on alleged loopholes in gun background checks. "Most people don't know, you walk into a store and you buy a gun, you have a background check. But you go to a gun show, you can buy whatever you want and no background check," according to Biden.

Multiple fact-checkers have taken issue with this claim.

The Washington Post fact-check team notes that federally licensed gun show sellers are indeed required to conduct background checks on buyers and to "file substantial paperwork." You can check out the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) guidance for gun show sellers here.

Some people do try to circumvent these rules by pretending they are not actually in the business of selling guns. However, "gun dealers who pretend to be gun hobbyists but actively trade guns at gun shows are prosecuted," point out the Post's Glenn Kessler and Salvador Rizzo. "It's also against federal law to sell a gun to any person you have reasonable cause to believe is a prohibited person, such as a felon."

Politifact also took issue with Biden's statement. Fact-checkers Louis Jacobson and Amy Sherman point out that:

When it comes to background checks for gun purchases, what matters is who sells the guns, not where the guns are sold — and when a federally licensed seller is a vendor at a gun show, they have to run a background check just as they would if they were back at a bricks-and-mortar gun store.

What matters is if the seller is in the business of selling guns—in which case they must be licensed by the feds and must conduct background checks or else they're already running afoul of the law—or a private seller who just happens to be selling a gun. More from Politifact:

Specifically, the law says that a license is required if "a person who devotes time, attention, and labor to dealing in firearms as a regular course of trade or business with the principal objective of livelihood and profit through the repetitive purchase and resale of firearms."

The law specifically rules out a required license if a person "makes occasional sales, exchanges, or purchases of firearms for the enhancement of a personal collection or for a hobby, or who sells all or part of his personal collection of firearms."

The administration defended Biden's comments by saying that it is possible for someone to buy a gun at a gun show without being subject to a background check. This is true but misleading, since it's possible for someone to buy a gun anywhere from a private seller and not be background checked; gun shows aren't the issue.

"Biden's phrasing can leave the impression that no background checks are required at gun shows," notes the Post. "Our colleagues at PolitiFact labeled Biden's statement as 'mostly false.' We would lean more toward 'half true,' (i.e., Two Pinocchios) given how Biden's statement could be misinterpreted."

On Thursday, Biden announced six new actions related to gun control. Reason's Jacob Sullum goes into detail about Biden's proposals here.

As is to be expected, these measures—including new restrictions on the sale of gun kits and the appointment of anti-gun activist David Chipman to lead the ATF—have raised a lot of praise from progressives and a lot of consternation from conservatives and libertarians.

One especially worrying development is Biden's attention to private gun sellers. Biden alone can't do much to change the rules surrounding gun gifting and sales between individuals. But he is throwing support behind legislation that would clamp down on such exchanges.

"Many Democrats and gun control advocates now want almost all sales and transfers to face a mandatory review," including sales and transfers "between friends and extended family," notes the Associated Press. "Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, the lead Democratic negotiator on guns, said he's been on the phone with Republican colleagues every day 'making the case, cajoling, asking my friends to keep an open mind'" about this proposal and also told the A.P. that Biden was "ready and willing to get more involved."

FREE MINDS

Republican gender policing efforts get more extreme. "A handful of Republican lawmakers in North Carolina want to force school officials to monitor kids for signs of any genderbending and to snitch on them to their parents," Reason's Scott Shackford reports:

The bill, sponsored by Sens. Ralph Hise (R–Spruce Pine), Warren Daniels (R–Morganton), and Norman Sanderson (R–Minnesott Beach), orders school officials and child welfare workers to notify parents or guardians in writing whenever a minor under their supervision "has exhibited symptoms of gender dysphoria, gender nonconformity, or otherwise demonstrates a desire to be treated in a manner incongruent with the minor's sex."

In other words, the aim here isn't to "protect" struggling teens who have doubts about their gender identities from making life-changing decisions too soon. The bill sets out to police gender conformity. By its very nature, it will target gays and lesbians as well as trans kids—and opens the door to surveilling boys and girls who are neither gay nor trans but simply don't manifest typical masculine or feminine traits.

FREE MARKETS

"States keep repeating the same mistake with marijuana legalization," complains Slate. That mistake: making it too complicated to open and operate a legal business, leading to the legal marketplace being dominated by large, multi-state weed conglomerates.

Increasingly, a group of larger companies known as multistate operators, or MSOs, dominate the industry. While still small compared with, say, liquor companies, the largest MSOs have dozens of stores and hundreds of millions in annual revenue. Leading MSOs such as Curaleaf, Cresco Labs, and Columbia Care have raised money by going public in Canada.

Left behind are mom-and-pop entrepreneurs, including those who could benefit from equity programs. In the mainstream economy, entrepreneurs of color often struggle to access capital, but in the cannabis world, the entire industry is locked out of the financial system. Some banks are willing to quietly work with pot companies and charge them high fees, but smaller businesses can't afford this option.

QUICK HITS

• The latest on the George Floyd murder trial:

The prosecution in Derek Chauvin's murder trial argues that the former Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd by pinning him facedown to the pavement for nine and half minutes. In that position, prosecutors say, Floyd could not breathe enough to stay alive. Today expert witnesses reinforced that account, saying the evidence indicates that Floyd—who complained 27 times that he was having trouble breathing—died from lack of oxygen.

Some people do try to circumvent these rules by pretending they are not actually in the business of selling guns.

Adding another regulation to circumvent is the key.

    1. Moderation4ever   4 years ago

Possibly, but I am not sure that using some people circumventing the law is justification for not trying to address the problem.

I guess the real question here is whether we should have background checks. If there are laws that prohibit some individuals from purchasing firearms then it seem reasonable to have some method of checking. And if people are circumventing that check then laws need to be adjusted to prevent this from happening.

Ok M4E, I don't normally do this but on one issue I have to agree with you; all of the above regarding specious "loopholes" is correct, just factual; however, I have come to learn that where anything political is concerned [and virtually EVERYTHING is political now] "facts" really do not count for much; it is, as you say, the "optics" and what enough people like the sound of, want to believe, and confirms their pre-existing bias that matters. That is what determines how they vote, who gets into office, and what policies are pursued.

In other words, I've already made up my mind, don't confused me with your niggling "facts;" it just feels right.

      4. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

For those who are concerned about making sure the potential buyer is not a "prohibited person," they can just go through a dealer, who can perform the background check. It's called taking a little "personal responsibility."

        1. Moderation4ever   4 years ago

Good point. I can agree. Now would you say that responsible gun owners should advocate for this? Should they say that "When you are selling a gun always do it through a licensed firearms dealer than does background checks"?

          1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

That is universal background checks; any and all firearm transfers go through an FFL, whether purchased from a dealer [a person regularly in the business of firearms sales], a store, private parties, or relatives.

Yet, sound ducky, don't it? Now here's the problem; how do you enforce it? Honor system? Sure, all nice, responsible, law abiding persons choose to do this, and what have you accomplished? Nothing; criminals, person with mens rea, will say fuck that, I'm a criminal to begin with so I will buy what I need from the black market, or use a straw man to purchase for me and pay him a premium for doing so. And, perhaps you have noticed, virtually all of the "mass shooters" have acquired their guns legally and have passed a background check.

So it accomplishes nothing, creates more paperwork and costs for law abiding people, and crime is not reduced one iota. There then must be a next step to enforce; that can only be accomplished via universal registration. A data base of all of the 330 millions guns privately owned in the US. Do I have to tell you what the "third step" will be?

          2. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

'"Should they say that “When you are selling a gun always do it through a licensed firearms dealer than does background checks?"'

Nope. The last firearm I transferred, was to my brother-in-law, a Lutheran minister who likes shooting trap. Universal background checks were, technically required where I lived at the time, excepting to "close family members." (Such language is nearly universal in "universal background checks." So, I transferred the shotgun to my wife, who gave it to her brother.

Similarly, should I be forced to get a background check on my father-in-law, whose most serious legal infraction was a speeding ticket about twenty years ago?

Methinks common sense should prevail here.

            1. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

Oh, I also forgot: When my step-father passed, his firearms became the property of my mother. Unbeknownst to me, there was this law requiring her to report this "transfer" of his hunting rifles and shotguns to the State. She could have been arrested for six separate misdemeanors. She was eighty years old at the time. I did not find this out until my mother passed. Ain't gun laws great?

              1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

"Possibly, but I am not sure that using some people circumventing the law is justification for not trying to address the problem. "
                M4E

"Address the problem" = "do something." Never mind that "the problem" is not clearly defined or substantiated, or that the "solution" will do anything to actually affect it. It is sounds good, feels good, we can then say "Hey, we really are better than this."

Bullshit does more than walk; it gets people voted into office and then bullshit prevails. Ain't that great?

            2. Mickey Rat   4 years ago

This is not about common sense. This is about the Democrat's ongoing moral panic about gun ownership in this country.

              1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

Right. Per Bloomers, the most horrifying aspect of the church shooting in Texas a few years ago was not the shooter hiself, but the members of the congregation who were armed and able to defend themselves and others.

We truly need to redefine our nation; there has to be room for one faction to do things its way, and the other it's own. Hopefully we can manage to cooperate on truly essential things like a common defense and currency, but it is not possible for all of us to live under one nation any more.

              2. Jefferson's Ghost   4 years ago

"This is not about common sense. This is about the Democrat’s ongoing moral panic about gun ownership in this country."

            4. markm23   4 years ago

The way universal background check bills have generally been written, not only would giving a gun to a relative or close friend that you _know_ is not a criminal be banned, but even letting them fire your gun at a range would be a crime. Like most gun control proposals, it's a bait-and-switch; they pretend it's for a narrow purpose, but the real purpose would be to trap gun owners into committing new "crimes".

Yesterday, M4e was claiming, re: the 60 Minutes lie-a-thon on De Santis, that 'perception' was more important than whether something was, in fact, true or false.
That's the level of 'intelligence' you're dealing with when engaging M4e; a 5 year old has a better grasp of reality.

I realize that; might as well piss in the wind for all the good it does. Feelz rules in the crowd.

I have also come to the conclusion that it is not possible for all of us to cooperatively live under one rule. Much better that the fringes do whatever the hell the want and leave the rest of us alone [they can yell and scream all they want]. So maybe a common defense and currency, but everything else local [State, or in the case of places like CA and NY, urban vs hinterlands.

      6. Bubba Jones   4 years ago

The dirty secret is that the federal government doesn't have the constitutional authority to directly require background checks of the buyers, and they know it.

They have the regulatory power to require firearms dealers to have licenses for the interstate commerce of guns. And as a condition of their license, they require FFLs (Federal Firearms License) to obtain a Form 4473 and conduct a background check with each sale. Then as part of the 4473, the buyer gets entangled in the process under penalty of perjury.

There is no such hook for a private sale that does not involve an FFL. Those can only be regulated by the states. That's why so much of Biden's gun agenda involves drafting model legislation for enactment by the states. As if the states didn't already have this.

Gun control is a relic from the Jim Crow era, when white cops discriminated against African Americans, said African Americans armed themselves, and then white legislatures sought to deny African-Americans their right to self defense.

It’s more than Jim Crow. It’s Jim Eagle.

So we have to oppose all gun control. Because it’s racist.

        Don’t be racist.

There is already a whole enforcement bureaucracy to identify and prosecute people who try to get away with that one.
Even selling a single gun illegally in such a way can net you 10 years and 250K.
Part of the problem is that the feds tend to come down hard on some old guy trying to make a few extra bucks fixing up and selling hunting rifles, but people who buy large number of guns specifically to resell to gang members and drug dealers often get absurdly light penalties.

Here is an article detailing what's involved in "transitioning".

    3. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

“A handful of Republican lawmakers in North Carolina want to force school officials to monitor kids for signs of any genderbending.”

This proposed positive use of government force is what ENB is referring to as “extreme”. What does government snitching on boys for acting feminine or girls for acting masculine have to do with opposing gender reassignment? It has nothing to do with it — it is going way beyond opposition to the extreme of government enforcement of gender.

      1. JesseAz   4 years ago

Ahh yes. Let government make decisions for kids. Not their parents. Truly a stunning take unless you actually believe in benevolent government, which you seem to do.

        1. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

What are you going on about?

When ENB (correctly) called the proposed North Carolina legislation, she was making a pretty straightforward libertarian appeal to not having the government involved in enforcing norms of masculinity or femininity on kids, and not involved in parenting.

The North Carolina proposed law is off on a tangent that has almost nothing to do with any debate about whether parents should be able to have their child’s gender reassigned surgically, approve hormone suppression treatment, or any issue like that.

          1. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

“called the proposed North Carolina legislation ‘extreme’”

          2. JesseAz   4 years ago

Youre arguing schools should be allowed to keep secrets from parents you retarded fuck. That is literally what the law does, force disclosures from a public entity about a child to their parents.

Schools should also report drug use, violence, sexual misconduct, etc to parents.

Yet you seem against this requirement.

So you must believe the government is benevolent and doesn't have to heed to a parents decision.

I already linked to a story yesterday of a school forcing trans literature on a child without parental consent because he was nervous about using the bathroom. The nervousness was due to a medical condition but the school pushed trans propaganda instead.

            1. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

“Youre arguing schools should be allowed to keep secrets from parents you retarded fuck.”

Ah, JesseAz is going the disingenuous route, again.

Here’s the description of the proposed law from yesterday’s blog post: “ A handful of Republican lawmakers in North Carolina want to force school officials to monitor kids for signs of any genderbending and to snitch on them to their parents.” That ain’t “keeping secrets”; that is saying that besides teaching Johnny to read, his teachers now have to surveil him for signs of feminine behavior.

              1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

JesseAz is going the disingenuous route

No he isn't, you dishonest fuck. That's exactly what you were arguing.

              2. JesseAz   4 years ago

What do you think a school/government not telling parents something regarding their child is?

Your argument is literally against codified parental notification.

                1. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

It is not. It is an argument against their having to tell t he parent about behaviors that go against an ill-defined standard, and is none of the government’s business.

      2. Cronut   4 years ago

I haven't read the article yet, but I am guessing that this is a reaction- possibly an overreaction- to the growing power of the state to interfere with parental choices and child rearing; the constant indoctrination of very young children into the identity politics cult, against which parents have very little defense; and the large and growing movement to push harmful transgender "treatments" on children too young to inderstand the consequences of their decisions. Children cannot give informed consent to transgender treatments that may permanently alter their bodies and render them sterile for the rest of their lives, and parents- who are held legally responsible for those children- have a right to know about their child's mental health problems.

        1. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

Yes, it is an overreaction. All the things you list are valid concerns, but this proposal goes way into using government in a completely different intrusive way.

There’s also an odd assumption behind it. How likely is it that, way, your son is acting effeminate only at school and you, as a parent, are not already aware of your own kid’s personality traits. Not bloody likely at all.

          1. Cronut   4 years ago

The reason you are so ill informed and dumb, WK, is because you rely on ENB's hot takes. I just went and read the relevant section of the bill, and ENB left out the two extremely relevant provisions immediately PRIOR to the one she mentions. It directs state entities that they may not conceal or encourage a minor child to conceal any mental health information from parents, including gender dysphoria, and it also states that parents have a right to withold consent for "treatment, activity, or mental health care services that are 5 designed and intended to form their child's conceptions of sex and gender or to treat gender 6 dysphoria or gender nonconformity," and the state may not infringe upon that right. It requires state employees to report symptoms of gemder dysphoria to parents.

This is basic protection for parental rights to direct the medical care of their children, and to prevent meddling woke teachers and counselors from indoctrinating children too young to know the difference.

            1. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

I do admit I relied on ENB’s description of the bill rather than going and reading the bill itself. Not sure it’s worth my time to learn all about a bill that is unlikely to pass, in a state I don’t live in.

If it’s not true that the bill requires snitching then I might not have a problem with it.

            2. The White Knight III: Army of Canuckness   4 years ago

Despite whatever other clauses it may contain, the bill does indeed have a snitch clause, just as Shackford, ENB described it. So their “hot take” was accurate:

              (c) If a government agent has knowledge that a minor under its care or supervision has exhibited symptoms of gender dysphoria, gender nonconformity, or otherwise demonstrates a desire to be treated in a manner incongruent with the minor's sex, the government agent or entity with knowledge of that circumstance shall immediately notify, in writing, each of the minor's parents, guardians, or custodians. 6. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   4 years ago

Shackford and now ENB are completely misrepresenting the language in the law.

minor under their supervision “has exhibited symptoms of gender dysphoria, gender nonconformity, or otherwise demonstrates a desire to be treated in a manner incongruent with the minor’s sex.”

That isn't expected to include “Billy looks swishy when he walks”, or “Susie wants to join the wrestling team”.

It’s more like “Susie stated to the counselor that she is horrified at the thought of growing breasts and asked if there was any way to prevent it”, or “Billy has stated his preference is to wear women’s underwear and requested permission to use the girl’s locker room to dress out for gym class”.

It's vague, like all legislation is vague, but it's not extreme in the least. Those kids are troubled and need more than a pamphlet and some platitudes about living their truth. The trans community has not lied about how at-risk these kids are for suicide.

White Knight has presented another complete non-sequitur to counter valid concerns.

Trump Vindicated as Judge Rules Michigan Secretary of State Violated Election Laws
    https://pjmedia.com/news-and-politics/matt-margolis/2021/03/17/trump-vindicated-as-federal-judge-rules-michigan-secretary-of-state-violated-election-laws-n1433162

A judge in Michigan has vindicated President Trump by ruling that Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, broke state law when she unilaterally changed election rules concerning absentee balloting in the 2020 election. This ruling legitimizes a key claim made by the Trump legal team in its challenges to the 2020 election.

A major change imposed by Benson was loosening the signature verification requirement for absentee ballots. Michigan Court of Claims Chief Judge Christopher Murray ruled that this change violated Michigan Administrative Procedures Act.

The court made the following conclusion:

…nowhere in this state’s election law has the Legislature indicated that signatures are to be presumed valid, nor did the Legislature require that signatures are to be accepted so long as there are any redeeming qualities in the application or return envelope as compared with the signature on file. Policy determinations like the one at issue — which places the thumb on the scale in favor of a signature’s validity — should be made pursuant to properly promulgated rules under the APA or by the Legislature.

I knew the Biden Era would be awesome. I just didn't know it would be THIS awesome.

The Biden administration appears to be spending at least $60 million per week to care for the more than 16,000 migrant teenagers and children in shelters operated by the Department of Health and Human Services, @NickMiroff reports.

It's so refreshing to no longer have a government that engages in racist practices like "border enforcement." Biden's investment in young immigrants will pay off when they join America's labor force and provide cost-effective labor for billionaire employers like Reason.com's benefactor Charles Koch.

Given that it is a government project, I reasonably suspect that roughly $2000 of that goes toward an environmental impact study.

Randi Weingarten has strong words for Jews who say unions are an obstacle
American Federation of Teachers President Weingarten speaks on coronavirus and school closures.
    https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/randi-weingarten-has-strong-words-for-jews-who-say-unions-are-an-obstacle-663912

Why should the teachers union in San Francisco or Los Angeles, for example, get to overrule the wishes of families who want their children in school?
It’s a question that angers Weingarten — and she has a specific message for US Jews who have joined in the criticism.
“American Jews are now part of the ownership class,” she said. “What I hear when I hear that question is that those who are in the ownership class now want to take that ladder of opportunity away from those who do not have it. Am I saying that everything we do is right? No. Are people in Los Angeles fearful? Yes.”

    1. Don't look at me!   4 years ago

Attacking the Jews is always a winning strategy.

      2. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

Shaming them, and citing their stereotypic success ["ownership class"] is even more so. Central the the pogroms of 19th and 20th century Europe was to claim that Jewish businesses were opulent, greedy and unfair, and it is apparently still a strategy to try and coerce them into getting in line.

    2. diWhite Knightoxide   4 years ago

because keeping public school closed creates opportunitIes for POCs

      1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

Yeah, rather contradictory, on it's face. Keeping the schools closed prevents the "non ownership class" from accessing a "qualify education" so they can someday be as successful as Jews, or Asians. However, it appears to be far more important to support the teachers union than it is to actually go to school.

You know, there's not much difference between Donald Trump and Joe Biden just saying whatever pops in their head at the moment, regardless of the truth or common sense, except that all Trump's comments were lies and all Joe Biden's comments are misstatements.

Scott Adams says that the media (e.g. Don Lemon, Jacob Sullum) is expecting the murder charges against Chauvin to fail, and are priming their audiences to riot:

    1. Jerryskids   4 years ago

As far as I know, the prosecution is presenting its case so what we're getting from the press coverage of the trial is one side of the story. We'll see if they present the defense's side of the story the same way. I suspect not - I suspect where they dispassionately presented the prosecution's side of the story, they're going to use that narrative to attack the defense's side of the story since "the facts" have already been presented.

    2. JesseAz   4 years ago

Anybody who actually pays attention to the entire trial and not just the prosecution arguments believes that. The prosecution has opened so much reasonable doubt before the defense has even called a witness.

Yes knee to hold a suspect down was trained especially with combative arrests.

Chauvin could have used a taser based on the call in of a tier 1 escalation.

Knee was on the upper back, not on the neck. Chauvin is 140 lbs.

Floyd did drugs and had more than lethal levels in his system.

Floyd claimed he couldn't breathe well before being put on the ground.

Floyd asked to be put on the ground.

Suspects under drugs will seemingly wake up quickly in a rage and can't be assumed to be asleep or passed out.

EMT was called much earlier than media first said.

Floyd was driving with his known drug dealer.

      1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

The Davos establishment wanted rioting before the election and were just waiting for a cop to do what cops will do. Chauvin is the unlucky idiot who got picked to be the scapegoat they needed.

        1. Nardz   4 years ago

          Unlucky... not so much.
Chauvin is a piece of shit who acted like a piece of shit. He completely ignored the optics of kneeling on a guy for an excessive amount of time, in front of a large crowd. He may have ignored the need for medical attention to the person he was kneeling on.
But, in the absence of evidence of bruising on Floyd's throat and the presence of evidence of potentially fatal levels of fentynal, chronic health conditions, and medical distress showing before Floyd was placed on the ground, I can't see how one could objectively/rationally conclude beyond reasonable doubt that Chauvin caused Floyd's death.

          1. Mother's Lament   4 years ago

I agree. Chauvin was a thug who should be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
But that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the reaction and riots were planned well before Floyd died, and that they were largely engineered.
I'm also saying that bumping the charges up to murder was deliberate scapegoating in order to legitimize the riots.

            1. Nardz   4 years ago

"I’m saying that the reaction and riots were planned well before Floyd died, and that they were largely engineered."

              100%
Chauvin wasn't so much unlucky, but it was "chance" that he timed his misbehavior (in)correctly

          2. Gaear Grimsrud   4 years ago

Pretty much my take as well. Chauvin is an asshole cop. But there's a mountain of reasonable doubt if the charge is murder. If I were on the jury I don't think I could get past involuntary manslaughter.

And that’s why we lost the Revolutionary War.

          2. MaxBlancke   4 years ago

To begin with, what you need to do to prevent a Shoah is not building tank obstacles or practicing large-scale coordinated maneuvers, but simply striking against the guys who come for your family. Obviously many of those who do this die in their living room instead of Sobibor.
It is a lot easier to get people to go house to house rounding up the Jews if doing so is seen as an activity that poses little personal risk. If ten percent of Jews in prewar Europe had armed themselves and defended their families, they would have vastly outnumbered the members of the SS. It would have been a bloodbath, but it was anyway.
In such cases, lack of organization is often an asset, especially against a force that is also trying to wage conventional warfare on multiple fronts, and is trying to occupy several countries with hostile populations. Having to divert forces from Stalingrad or North Africa in order to force the Cohens onto a railcar starts to make less sense that way.

I’m not ignorant of history. Hell I know more than the liars/idiots on here that say nazism=Socialism

Then when given a speech written by Hitler and given by Goebbels entitled "Why Are We Socialists?", explaining why the National Socialists believed in socialism, he tried to handwave it away by saying:

"They said a lot of things. They did have many things in common with socialists, but they had many differences. I’ve explained this too many times. Hitler hated communists. Just because you found one thing where Goebbels claims to be a socialist doesn’t make Nazism the same as Socialism.

I laughed so hard when I read that. He conflates socialism and communism, and claims that even though the Nazis called themselves socialist and did socialist things, they still weren't socialists somehow.

The 1935 Law of Weapons in Nazi Germany specifically probibited arms to "Jews and other non-Aryan peoples."

Also, the Nazis discouraged even those they considered "Aryan" from private ownership of guns, saying that those who wished to bear arms should do so in service of the Reich by joining the Military or Gestapo.

And, yes, if every Jew or even Jewish family had so much as one Mauser and 1000 rounds, even with some deaths, they still would have stopped the attempted total extermination of their people.

And as a bonus they would have diverted Hitler's legions from expanding by conquest and murdering others, such as Slavs, Romani (called Gypsies at the time,) Poles, Homosexuals, the handicapped, political opponents, business and labor leaders, etc. ad nauseum.

If you want to see actual stories of what people with arms (and Jews in particular) can do to change history, watch Escape From Sobibor, Uprising, and Defiance.

The people in the Sobibor death camp were especially noteworthy because they started out with shop-made knives and axes, then leveraged them to get access to guns. I won't spoil the plot too much. Let's just say that everyone did what the Hell they wanted, as free people do.

You may also want to watch these movies as a cautionary tale for your own genocidal thoughts. Good aversion therapy, I'd say.

Members of the Nazi party could own guns, and they were less strict than gun laws during the Weimar republic.

No they didn't you dishonest fuck. In fact it was exactly the opposite.
Guns were everywhere in Germany in the aftermath of WW1. There were little militias all over the place, completely unaffiliated with each other and on every part of the political spectrum.

Just because you know fuck all about post-war German history doesn't mean the rest of us don't. You're not clever enough to pull off bluffs like this here, you stupid shit.

The Weimar republic had stricter gun laws for most germans than the Nazi govt.

Nope, the Weimar government had almost no gun laws whatsoever. I realize that you read the lie in Salon, but the source of the story, UofChicago Law prof Bernard Harcourt, tried to misrepresent a 1919 order based on the Versailles treaty demand to return all military equipment back to the state, as a "strict gun-control law".

The relevant portion actually reads; ":
Within two months from the coming into force of the present Treaty, German arms, munitions and war material, including antiaircraft material, existing in Germany in excess of the quantities allowed, must be surrendered to the Governments of the Principal
Allied and Associated Powers to be destroyed or rendered useless."

That's it, that's your fucking "Weimar Gun Control Law" you useless stooge. The Treaty of Versailles, lol.

In 1928 the Weimar government actually made a law clarifying that the Treaty of Versailles clause didn't apply to individuals or police.

Just give up ya drunk. You’re in over your head.

No one has to use the Holocaust to uphold the right to keep and bear arms.

The Holocaust, as well as American Slavery and Jim Crow, The Trail of Tears, The Armenian Genocide by The Ottoman Empire, Sha'ria law throughout the Islamic World, the weapons policies of the Soviet Bloc and China, and other examples throughout world history attest to the horrors that result when innocents are disarmed.

Everyone knows now that the Hunter Biden documents -- including those raising questions about Joe's participation in his China deals -- are authentic, but admitting that is a scandal given what they & Facebook did, so they've trained liberals to think any mention of it is trivial

Anyone "interviewing" Hunter Biden who doesn't ask these questions is committing journalistic malpractice:

    * Were any of reported emails attributed to you forged?

    * Did you pursue the business deals in China reflected in those emails?

    * Did the "big guy's 10%" refer to Joe?

Black students going to progressive colleges and committing white supremacist hate hoaxes against their own community is a bizarre phenomenon. It happens several times a year now. I really want to know what is going on psychologically with a person who does that.

I have a theory—and this is just a theory. I wonder if black students come to college expecting to encounter the overt racism you often see in poor communities and instead encounter something worse-more insidious: white liberal coddling & condescending racism...

They enter the University, full of white progressives, who I think are the most racist people in our country right now. They deal with this babying, patronizing leftist racism that is just as dehumanizing as any other kind of racism, but they are in an environment where the...

...racism is called “anti-racism.” They are gaslit every day to believe the white liberal racism they experience is actually a good thing. Every one of these hoax attacks seem designed to paint the university community as racist. Well, they are. Maybe black students are simply...

trying to, in some weird, desperate way, to drag the insidious racism of white progressives into the open in a way that people will actually respond to. We should all be marching against the progressive woke racism of these universities, and calling it out for what it is.

...again, this is just a theory. You are welcome to pick it apart and offer alternatives. I’ve heard about the “supply to meet demand” idea, but I think there’s more to it.

There’s also the idea that we live in a narcissist culture and this is a cheap way to get attention. There’s something to that too. Many layers. (End thread)

I don't buy this take. If they came to the campus expecting it, why would they even bother going?

I suspect it has a lot more to do with them looking for attention and watching white people dance like monkeys in response, given the level of self-flagellation that always takes place after these things happen.

      1. mad.casual   4 years ago

I don’t buy this take. If they came to the campus expecting it, why would they even bother going?

I think you're dismissing the forest for the trees or, rather, you're saying that because he's asserted the wrong bait, the bait and switch isn't happening. Whether they expect to get hassled for studying while black or a pure, edifying meritocracy, that's not what they're getting. And, when you look around for how to get ahead easily, victimocracy is an easy sell.

Of course, since we aren't talking about one black person or blacks as a monolith, it's entirely possible that both answers and several more are accurate.

Judge puts a permanent injunction on CMP videos involving PP and the abortion federation. Judge declares videos are not of public interest despite an abortion doctor testifying last year the videos showed criminal conduct through discussions of altering procedures to get more and better baby parts. Judge contends since California didn't prosecute PP then there must be no crime in response.

Thomas More Society Vice President and Senior Counsel Peter Breen said in a statement:

This permanent injunction covering up the release of incriminating video from a large abortion trade show strikes at the heart of the First Amendment. The American people deserve to see and hear what the abortion providers of this country are willing to say and do to skirt and even violate the law. We will appeal this decision, to vindicate David Daleiden’s rights and the rights of every brave undercover journalist in this country and to hold bad actors like the National Abortion Federation to account.

No longer is society shaped by healthy young families with strong inter-generational ties that foster a spirit of independence and self-reliance. Everyone is a child of the State now, conditioned to see themselves as alone and vulnerable unless the collective nurtures them.
No longer do families that began at young ages accumulate wealth that can be passed easily to the next generation, on and on. Collectivists now have a reliable power base of atomized urbanites who own no capital and have little accumulated family wealth.
Once those atomized people grow up and enter what passes for the "adult world" these days, they find everything that would help them form bonds of friendship and trust that could lead to independence from the State is also under attack. We can barely TALK to each other any more.
There are no more relaxed conversations, no more good humor, no more fellowships, no melting pot. It's just endless grievances and angry demands, words redefined and stricken from our language every day, limitless paranoia and suspicion.
An entire generation has been raised to seek nothing more ardently than resolution of their grievances by appeals to authority.

"Most people don't know, you walk into a store and you buy a gun, you have a background check. But you go to a gun show, you can buy whatever you want and no background check,"

    This is a true statement.

It's also a true statement to say that you can then use that gun to rob a liquor store, to mug an old lady, to shoot a random person in the head, or to pistol-whip somebody who irritated you. None of these things are legal mind you, but it is true that they can be done.

I thought the Dems wanted to defund the police.

Who will enforce gun control laws if the police are defunded?

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

"Defund the police," as I am sure you know, is nothing but a line for situational convenience. To use when a mob is at your door, or you need their votes. Using any an all authority against those who don't vote for you and you don't even like is another matter.

Well, only those who aren't gender-conforming.

It might seem difficult to reconcile their position with the NAP but those old Ron Paul libertarians were all racists and the new woke libertarians are in charge now. As long as the borders are wide open they can tolerate a few wars. Besides which, they all voted for Jo so they aren't responsible for anything.

I've come to accept that facts have mattered for a while now. All the more so for MSM.

You must have missed the part where Joe Biden averred that the left chooses science over fiction and truth over facts. As a wise man once dismissively said, you can use facts to prove anything that's even remotely true. So of what use are facts?

            "... truth over facts."

Yep. And what is truth but what you believe it to be? If you honestly believe a falsehood [Ptolemy, the sun revolves around the earth] it doesn't matter that is was not factual and that Galileo got it right centuries later; for thousands of years it was "the truth" and anyone who doubted it was a heretic.

  43. B G   4 years ago

Imagine Biden's confusion at being fact checked and found to be mostly lying by a newspaper that's been carrying water for the Dems on that kind of talking point for 20+ years (during which, it's never been any more true than it is today).

I wonder if it's on par with Obama's shock in 2015 when reporters from outlets other than FNC/WSJ started asking questions more pointed than "What do you think is the problem with your critics? Are they racist, or just generally evil?"

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

See comment above; as per modern monetary theory that stipulates that deficits do not matter, in politics [and most social constructs] facts do not matter; it is a matter a "truth" being what you want to believe.

      1. B G   4 years ago

Right now is such a strange time for a MSM "sea change" on the question of how big the "gun show loophole" is, was what I'm driving at.

For at least 2 decades, the Dems have been able to count on most of the media to simply parrot their talking point that anyone can simply walk into a Gun Show anywhere in the country and walk out with an arsenal of untraceable guns sufficient to arm the entire Sinaloa Cartel, if they happen to have enough cash on them that day. Why would they start now on rating that same implication as "mostly false" and finally correctly report that licenses dealers (who make up 95% or more of the vendors selling guns at most such events) have to do at least a NICS check regardless of where the sale happens? The WaPo didn't quite get into the part where state laws only apply to private sellers if the buyer is also a resident of the same state, and that those laws vary widely but in all sates aren't different for a sale at a Gun Show than they are for a sale at any other time/place.

  44. mintaslanxor   4 years ago

Got this from a friend this morning:

Can you imagine the right-wing head explosion if Dems decided to play their game and:

    - made buying a gun only available on a shrinking number of days and not on Sundays

    - restricted the sales to a handful of locations that people had to drive hours to get to

    - made customers stand in line for hours

-forced buyers to register weeks in advance to have a full background check

    - restricted sales only to people on a list that is constantly purged; any mistakes in purging would be up to the gun buyer to sort out

    - to top it off, anyone providing food or water to prospective buyers in line waiting for hours would be arrested.

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

You, and your friend, are fucking idiots. I will tell you that you won't find many takers for your virtue pandering around here.

    2. buckleup   4 years ago

The left wing shit shows up and makes poor straw man arguments and false equivalencies. You're bad at this.

Voting is incredibly easy both to get registered and actually go vote. It's not difficult at all. It doesn't require much in the way in brain power which is why we have TDS shitheads who vote for lazy democrats who peddle socialism and other failed ideologies.

But as usual the idiot left can't understand basic things and so they make up shit like your post that compares voting to purchasing a product.

Yesterday, Black Lives Matter protesters stormed the Iowa State Capitol to try and “kill” legislative bills they opposed (their event was called “Kill the racist bills”).

Is this an insurrection? In your essay, compare and contrast with at the US Capitol of January 6th. If more composition books are needed, please ask your proctor.

    1. Quo Usque Tandem   4 years ago

DES MOINES, Iowa — Black Liberation Movement activists and the Iowa State Patrol clashed at the Capitol Thursday afternoon, resulting in a Norwalk high schooler being dragged to the ground and arrested on the first floor of the rotunda.

According to the Des Moines Black Liberation Movement Collective (DSM BLM), community members gathered at the Iowa State Capitol to protest several bills.

The protest was organized by Advocates for Social Justice, a group based in Cedar Rapids. They deemed several bills in the legislature to be "racist and dangerous."

DSM BLM reported around three dozen community members gathered inside the Capitol building on the first-floor rotunda to protest. The area is a public space, and videos posted on Twitter and Facebook show demonstrators were acting peacefully.

We will not be intimidated by law enforcement or those seeking to destroy our movement. We will continue to uplift, support and fight for the liberation of ALL Black people. pic.twitter.com/0XL1aE1j4q

One video posted by Cortez Rice, George Floyd's nephew, shows the demonstrators move from outside the Capitol to inside.

Demonstrators walked through the public entrance at the front of the Capitol, with troopers watching them as they moved their protest inside.

Protestors yelled "Black lives matter" as they walked through the doors and metal detectors with their signs. Rice's phone even goes through the metal detector during the live stream.

Chants changed from "these racist cops have got to go" to "this is what democracy looks like."

Then, protestors laid on the ground for nine minutes and 29 seconds, which is how long Rice's uncle was pinned to the ground before he died last May. Chants continued through this time.

After the time was up, protesters got back up to continue through their protest, chanting "kill those bills."

Over an hour into Rice's live stream is when the arrest of 18-year-old Josie Mulvihill happened. She appears on-camera asking troopers for their badge numbers as chants continued.

Then, a commotion starts near Mulvihill and another unidentified protester. It's not caught on Rice's stream, but this is when Mulvihill allegedly assaulted the trooper, who DSM BLM identified as DJ Hernandez.

The situation escalates quickly in the video, when the officer pulls out a set of handcuffs and brings Mulvihill down to the ground. Other protesters attempt to pull the trooper off of her as other troopers start pushing them away.

Officers pulled her away from the rest of the group as protesters question the troopers why they're arresting her.

In Rice's video, he called out Hernandez's badge number and last name. Protesters crowded around the trooper vehicle where she was detained.

Local 5 reached out to the Iowa State Patrol for comment. Here is their response:

"Josephine Pearl Mulvihill, 18 years old was charged with assault on a peace officer from an incident at the State Capitol today. She was cited and released to parental supervision.

The Complaint and Affidavit will be available once it has been filed with the court."

Over an hour into Rice’s live stream is when the arrest of 18-year-old Josie Mulvihill happened. She appears on-camera asking troopers for their badge numbers as chants continued.

So, more likely that Ofc. Hernandez knew which way Rice was pointing the camera and decided to seize the opportunity to risk his career or more likely that Mulvihill knew which way the camera was pointing and decided to seize the opportunity to become internet/BLM famous?

In Rice’s video, he called out Hernandez’s badge number and last name.

Again, more likely that Hernandez, name and badge prominently visible took the seized the opportunity to introduce himself and then assault Mulvihill or more likely that Mulvihill took name and badge numbers so that what would otherwise be recognized as doxxing was legitimized?

More chiefly/pointedly, did Ashli Babbitt manage to call out her executioner's name first?
