White House Sanctions Staffers Over Past Marijuana Use

Read the room? President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris entered the White House promising to not be the same old cops about cannabis. Biden "has reluctantly embraced decriminalizing marijuana," The Washington Post reported in January. And Harris has for several years been working to outrun her past drug warrior ways. True to this form, the Biden administration reportedly told potential staffers that past use of recreational marijuana would not necessarily disqualify them from White House jobs.

But now, "dozens of young White House staffers have been suspended, asked to resign or placed in a remote work program due to past marijuana use," The Daily Beast reports.* The move is "frustrating staffers who were pleased by initial indications from the Biden administration that recreational use of cannabis would not be immediately disqualifying for would-be personnel, according to three people familiar with the situation."

The zero tolerance policy even applies to people who only partook in states where recreational marijuana is legal, the Beast says:

Sources familiar with the matter also said a number of young staffers were either put on probation or canned because they revealed past marijuana use in an official document they filled out as part of the lengthy background check for a position in the Biden White House.

A White House spokesperson told the Beast:

"This decision was made following intensive consultation with career security officials and will effectively protect our national security while modernizing policies to ensure that talented and otherwise well-qualified applicants with limited marijuana use will not be barred from serving the American people."

The move itself and the laughably pompous rationale given—we must fire former cannabis users to protect national security!—doesn't bode well for expectations that the Biden-Harris administration might help bring more sanity to our nation's drug laws.

Meanwhile, in Mexico:

Mexico's likely approval of a law legalizing marijuana — possibly next month — could make it the world's most populated country to authorize cannabis for medical and recreational purposes. That would have a big impact on the United States.

Some marijuana industry advocates, such as Mexico's former President Vicente Fox, say the country's expected passage of this law will push the Biden administration to legalize weed at the federal level in the United States.

The trouble with the "marketplace of ideas" metaphor. Greg Lukianoff, president and CEO of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), suggests that this metaphor "doesn't really capture free speech's most fundamental function: Freedom of speech gives you a fighting chance to know the world as it really is."

.@glukianoff on a pure informational theory of freedom of speech and the importance of knowing what others think, even if their ideas are nutty or wrong. https://t.co/kPXMai7ki1

FTC commissioner explains reservations about Facebook lawsuit. On Thursday, during (yet another) congressional hearing on tech companies and antitrust law, Noah Phillips of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explained why he was one of two commissioners who voted last year against the FTC suing Facebook. From NBC News:

Phillips said he believes the length of time that has lapsed since Facebook's acquisitions of Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014 presents an obstacle for enforcers. The FTC reviewed both merger proposals at the time and decided not to block them, allowing Facebook to move forward with the deals and make the apps integral parts of its own business.

"A big part of this goes to the integrity of the process," Phillips said, adding that he agrees that the law allows the agency to reevaluate mergers after they are consummated. "But as a general matter in terms of mergers, the longer you wait, the more investments the company make[s]. And I think that presents a real issue."

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris entered the White House promising to not be the same old cops about cannabis.

    And everyone believed them.

What ENB doesn’t seem to understand is most staggers will undergo SF-86 backed background checks. While states have legalized Marijuana, at the federal level it is still illegal and explicit use can still deny a security clearance (let me know if you need to know more about this DoL). So since the staffers are beholden to current federal law, background use of drugs can effect their employment.

ENB didn’t seem to expand on the actual issues at all, most likely from ignorance.

      1. JesseAz   4 years ago

        Staffers*

and I dont care one way or another about Marijuana and its legalization.

What I care about is advocating for the government to allow favored sections of the citizenry to be exempt from laws.

Work to repeal the laws or treat everyone the same. What ENB is arguing here is favored treatment. Every one worh a clearance goes through this exercise except the president and congress apparently. And in generally someone will pass the check if they are not current users and don’t contradict the person interviews they have with the contacts they list.

Clearly since Harris herself proclaimed she smoked marijuana, apparently being half Jamaican forces you to, it’s pretty clear that at least the VP is exempt from background checks. Of course she was allegedly out of the loop on the Syria bombing bit so maybe all isn’t forgiven.

Obama candidly admitted to marijuana use, iirc during the campaign but it may have been after. The rules are different for the people in charge.

        1. A Warning regarding White Knight   4 years ago

There is a paid troll here in the Reason comments (one of several fifty-centers) who uses the moniker “White Knight”.

This troll’s purpose is to try and deflect criticism of the Democratic Party and, to a lesser extent, Reason Magazine articles and writers who support the agenda of the Democratic Party.

In order to halt conversation, the trolls here use disruption techniques.

White Knight’s favorite disruption technique is to demand a citation even for the most ordinary or obvious statements. Keep in mind that these requests aren’t just reserved for controversial statements but often for matters of common knowledge (e.g. the formula for water is H2O). The purpose of this is twofold:

In the first, a commenter will waste time and energy hunting down a citation.
When such a citation is posted White Knight will then redefine the criteria and claim that the citation is worthless; or, if unequivocal, White Knight will ignore the response, and move elsewhere. Either way the purpose of disruption was served.

In the second, if the commenter ignores White Knight or refuses to play along, White Knight will then follow the commenter along, claiming at every post that they are dishonest and can’t back up their statements. Here too, harassment and disruption are the purpose.

It is important for us all not to enable White Knight.
If you see White Knight making an inane citation request over an uncontroversial claim, please respond by posting “Fuck off, White Knight”, or by pasting this warning.

Do you think that Reason, a rag who has railed against the drug war for years, wouldn’t expect the Biden administration to be better on the drug war?

I know, from years of reading Reason, that they have covered the hell out of Kamala Harris record as a top cop drug warrior, and have also covered Biden’s history as a drug warrior.

How did this obvious observation not make it into the summary? both Harris and Barack Obama actually bragged about marijuana use as a part of their campaign, despite both having actively played roles in putting people in jail for exactly the same crime.

How in the world do you write a blurb about the Biden administration suspending or forcing out young employees who admit to using marijuana in the past and not bring this up?

More importantly, how are you a white house reporter with any self-respect if you did not ask this question directly to Biden and Harris?

Today’s blacklisted Americans: California Democrats to blacklist all conservative or religious policemen
    https://behindtheblack.com/behind-the-black/points-of-information/todays-blacklisted-americans-california-democrats-to-blacklist-all-conservative-or-religious-policemen/
The bill, known as the California Law Enforcement Accountability Reform Act (CLEAR Act), claims to combat “the infiltration of extremists in our law enforcement agencies” and would mandate a background check for all officers who have “exchanged racist and homophobic messages.”

Kalra claims that AB 655 is necessary to prevent “the apparent cooperation, participation, and support of some law enforcement” in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.

The bill defines hate speech as “as advocating or supporting the denial of constitutional rights of, the genocide of, or violence towards, any group of persons based upon race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability.”

Some US troops view Capitol riots, racial protests equally, worrying Pentagon leaders
      https://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/nation-world/national/national-security/article250039834.html

During military training sessions to address extremism in the ranks, some service members have challenged why the Pentagon is not treating the violence during racial injustice protests last summer as equal to the deadly riot at the U.S. Capitol.

That the two events are viewed as equivalent by some troops has caught the Pentagon’s attention in its effort to educate service members that extremist views and activity — on either side of the political spectrum — go against the oath they took when they joined the military, the top enlisted leader told reporters on Thursday.

“This is coming from every echelon that we’re talking to,” said Ramón Colón-López, the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “Some people may think that, ‘all right, so the events of 6 January happened. How come you’re not looking at the situation that was going on in Seattle prior to that?’”

The bill you linked to is not a religious test. That it is a religious test seems to be purely spin on the part of behindtheblack.com, as I plainly said in my comment.

Whatsmore, I don’t even support or think it is a good idea for California to test police applicants for woke attitudes. Not that you bothered to ask me, because I am quite sure you assume I support wokeness, which I do not.

As a left-libertarian, I would like the corporations that basically control the Internet to purge all right-wing voices. It would be the free market in action, after all. Until that happens, however, I sometimes read conservative sites just to see what nonsense they’re peddling these days. Here’s my latest find:

vanitaguptaCR, a top Biden DOJ nominee, calls a $15 minimum wage a human right. But a company chaired by her father pays its Mexican workers as little as $1.30 an hour–and Vanita has at least a $500,000 stake in it

    End the public schools:
    https://www.joannejacobs.com/2021/03/we-dont-need-no-education/

“There’s no such thing as learning loss,” writes Rachael Gabriel, an education professor, in Valerie Strauss’s Washington Post column. “Corona kids” are learning valuable things while out of school, she argues. There’s no need for them to “catch up.”

Learning is never lost, though it may not always be “found” on pre-written tests of pre-specified knowledge or preexisting measures of pre-coronavirus notions of achievement.

Gabriel sees schools as “an access point for things like books, daytime supervision of children, nutrition, therapeutic services, and sometimes health care,” but argues it’s “a myth that families must rely on school for learning to occur.”

If this nation is going to spend billions of dollars on public schooling, surely we want more than day-care centers with breakfast, lunch, snacks and copies of Anti-Racist Baby.

And, if children can learn just as well without school, let’s give those billions to parents or back to the taxpayers. “No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher’s dirty looks! School’s out forever.”

It seems odd to me that a specialist in “literacy education” doesn’t value reading, a skill that some children need to be explicitly taught. Even more children will not learn math without being taught. Of course, some parents can teach math, hire a tutor or pay tuition at a private school that’s open for in-person learning. Is it OK to write off the other kids?

Some out-of-school students are depressed, anxious, lonely and withdrawn, but others are doing OK emotionally. They may have discovered new talents and interests. Let’s say your son is great at making TikTok videos, your daughter has become a creative chef, your gender-neutral teen is now a champion e-gamer. They are kind and loving people. Do you want them to be able to read, write and calculate too, to understand science, civics and history? Do you care if they have a shot at a college degree — perhaps in science, engineering, medicine or some other field that requires the ability to multiply and divide? I think you do.

Gabriel has two main themes: She opposes testing students on academic achievement and offering summer schools that try to get students caught up on reading, math and other skills.

“What if we imagined the “corona kids” had learned more than previous cohorts,” she asks.

    1. Don't look at me!   4 years ago

Rachel Levine Committed Cuomocide In Pennsylvania
    https://issuesinsights.com/2021/03/17/rachel-levine-committed-cuomocide-in-pennsylvania/

Pennsylvania’s state health director Rachel Levine is ticketed to be the assistant secretary of Health and Human Services for Policy. A Senate floor vote on her confirmation is expected next week. We generally believe that presidents deserve the advisers they choose, but Levine is about the last person in America you would want devising the nation’s health policies.

On March 18, 2020, Levine issued a Cuomo-order that said:

“Nursing care facilities must continue to accept new admissions and receive readmissions for current residents who have been discharged from the hospital who are stable to alleviate the increasing burden in the acute care settings. This may include stable patients who have had the COVID-19 virus.”

While Levine defended this policy, “ABC27 learned the health secretary’s mother recently vacated a personal care home in the Midstate.”

Everybody is reading this wrong. This is being dredged up from the progressive think tank universe.

Asian Americans are a growing and successful segment of the American melting pot. The problem? They don’t really identify as an oppressed minority. It is extremely important to the Democrat coalition that Asians do not see themselves as being discriminated against by leftist affirmative action policies that keep them from attending top colleges. So what to do?

Manufacture a wave of anti-aging hate crimes stoked by Trump uttering the words “China flu” out of thin air.

Everyone here should easily be able to recognize this. every media outlet, at every level has suddenly begun pushing the narrative that there is a wave of anti-asian violence by racist right-wing white people. Why? Why did ABC run an hour-long special about racism against Asians? Asians are the most successful ethnically identifiable group in the United States. They do better than white people by quite a clip.

Yet somehow they are an oppressed minority? That’s a tough case to make. Which is why we have the full court press. Every television station, every radio station, every newspaper, every online publication…. Everywhere, on the same day. Suddenly this is the top narrative. It did not grow organically out of a groundswell of anger and interracial strife. No, this is intended to create racial strife out of whole cloth. The only identifiable biases against Asians as a group are of the left. And the only violence against Asian people for their ethnicity is happening on the left coast and it is primarily African Americans who harbor the bias.

Crime statistics bear this out in spades. You don’t see a lot of white people in the Ozarks attacking Asians. It isn’t a big deal in Appalachia. Why? Because Asians don’t live cheek by jowl with poor white trash in these locations. But they do live cheek by jowl with African Americans in places like the San Francisco Bay area.

So Asians are beset by racist attacks from Democrat elites who want them excluded from top universities because they do too well on standardized tests and in taking top courses in high school and thereby squeeze out preferred minorities and by poor Democrats in California cities. And you wonder why the Democrats think tanks felt the need to push a narrative that Republicans are racist white supremacists who hate Asians?

More bad news for mask nazis. Florida owed schools to choose masks rwquired or masks optional as a policy. No matter the choice, results ended the same.

    https://redstate.com/bonchie/2021/03/18/new-data-further-calls-into-question-joe-bidens-edicts-on-mask-wearing-n345984

But please keep pretending masks saved humanity.

    1. ElvisIsReal   4 years ago

“SHOCKING!” Said everybody who hasn’t been looking at the data for nearly a year now.

Masks don’t move the needle with regards to the virus, they are there to remind you SOMETHING IS WRONG AND YOU NEED TO BE REALLY REALLY SCARED.

  42. Ken Shultz   4 years ago

Pronouncing and spelling proper nouns differently in your own language is as old as the hills (and their names).

There is no city called “Vienna” in German. The name is “Wien”, and the “W” is pronounced like a “V” in English. And Wein isn’t in Austria. It’s in “Österreich”, with an umlaut over the “o”. There is no city named “Munich”. It’s spelled “München”, with an umlaut over the “u”. Be sure to pronounce it properly. Oh, and for good measure, the “Germans” don’t call themselves that. They call themselves “Deutsche”. Don’t be a bigot.

P.S. Spanish speakers shouldn’t be corrected when they refer to New York as “Nueva York”. They’re not being racists. SJWs are being stupid.

Pronouncing proper names differently in your own language has been normal across all languages and throughout all of history. Oh, and cross culturally and throughout history, proper names that are easy to pronounce in one language are difficult to pronounce properly in other languages, too. Get over it.

You think people that get social science degrees in underwater Bolivian basket weaving give a flying flip about history and/or convention?

They’re purifying us, Ken. One bigot at a time.

    2. Cyto   4 years ago

I think that was racist… But to properly evaluate, we need to know your race, sex, gender, sexual orientation and preferred pronouns. Oh, and political orientation is probably imortant in the determination too.

      1. Commenter_XY   4 years ago

Cyto, it is funny you mention the preferred pronouns. I attend religious services via Zoom daily (morning, evening). You know what I have started seeing? The fucked up pronoun thing. At the bottom of the screen for a user, you can optionally put in she/her or he/him or ze/zim (and a bunch of other combos I have never heard of before).

        Weird AF.

“…Oh, and for good measure, the “Germans” don’t call themselves that. They call themselves “Deutsche”…”

Northern Germans claim Bavarians don’t have a language, just a throat disease.

Oh, and for good measure, the “Germans” don’t call themselves that. They call themselves “Deutsche”.

Neal Stephenson consistently uses the term ‘Nipponese’ in his writing and, AFAICT, is the only Western author of any significance to do so.

    5. creech   4 years ago

All cool, Ken. Probably you should use English version while in English speaking countries and use things like “Munchen” only when in the proper country. Otherwise you sound like a snobby douche – remember when there was a lot of hilarity over American elitists pronouncing Nicaragua or Cuba in the Spanish tongue.

Well, I am glad I got my clearance in the 80’s when they didn’t care about drug use as long as you admitted it. Same thing with homosexuality. If you were open about it, then they figured you couldn’t be blackmailed about it, so no worries. Now, if you said no, and they found yes, no clearance for you.
(Most clearances rejected were for bad credit reports; possible bribery candidates)

“The marketplace of ideas” is a showstopper for those who don’t believe in markets. The Left wants government allocation of ideas, and the Right wants idea protectionism. No free markets from either side.

Tobacco & alcohol are the two most deadly & dangerous of ALL drugs, including heroin & other opiates.

Tobacco drug use results in more drug deaths (~500,000/year in the USA) than the combined total number of drug deaths in the USA from the use of ALL other drugs, including alcohol!

Tobacco & alcohol are physically & psychologically addicting hard drugs that meet the definition in the CSA of being schedule I & II controlled substances.

Amendment XIV guarantees citizens the Equal Protection of the Law.

    Either:
    1) tobacco/nicotine, alcohol, coffee, and cannabis MUST be classified & regulated as the schedule I, II, V, and V (not I) controlled substances they are, as defined in the Controlled Substances Act (CSA);
    or,
    2) the CSA MUST be repealed and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) MUST be abolished.

We MUST have the Equal Protection of the Law!
