Trump's Immigration Policy Was Brutal and Inhumane. Will Biden Fix It?

Obama was also no immigration hero.

|

President Donald Trump likes to win. As his time in the Oval Office comes to an end today, there's at least one accolade he can confidently claim: He has instituted some of the most inhumane immigration policies of any modern president. From separating families at the border as part of a "zero-tolerance" policy, to weaponizing immigrants' legal status for political power, to frivolously pulling visas without explanation or justification, to zeroing in on Good Samaritans, to hiring a ruthless nativist as his primary policy architect, Trump leaves Washington with a record that should draw the ire of anyone who cares about basic freedoms.

But what about President-elect Joe Biden, whose former boss, President Barack Obama, earned the moniker "deporter in chief" for his record-setting focus on expelling immigrants?

He promises to be better. The incoming president has constructed the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021, which would provide immigrants with a five-year path to a green card and a subsequent three-year path to citizenship if they meet a set of obligations, including passing a background check and paying taxes. In order to disincentivize a rush to the border, the bill requires that recipients have lived in the U.S. since January 1, 2021.

On border security, Biden says he will cease construction of enhanced border barriers and instead will hone in on technology to "to expedite screening and enhance the ability to identify narcotics and other contraband at every land, air, and sea port of entry," the administration notes in a press release.

Biden will also immediately move to reverse restrictions on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the policy that provides work permits and deportation protection to immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as young children through no fault of their own. Trump initially sought to terminate the program, but after failing in the courts pivoted to curtailing it instead.

Yet although DACA has widespread bipartisan support, it was always on precarious footing since Obama implemented it via executive order. Biden's plan will reportedly provide the 640,000 immigrants who qualify with an opportunity to apply for a green card, although his administration's press release did not allude to that. He will further move to rescind Trump's travel ban on 13 countries via executive action.

A significant move that will get less attention: Biden will restrict who Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can arrest and deport, an effort initially put in place by Obama but overturned by Trump. Deportations for immigrants without criminal records will likely be deprioritized in favor of those who actually present a threat.

He has also intimated that he will work to end the Trump administration's "Remain in Mexico" policy, which kept a migrant from entering the United States while their asylum case wound its way through the courts. That will be a lengthier endeavor. The program was "a disaster from the start and has led to a humanitarian crisis in northern Mexico," said Jake Sullivan, Biden's national security adviser, "but putting the new policy into practice will take time."

In that vein, the newly minted president will seek to focus on addressing the root causes of why so many Central American migrants are flooding the U.S. border, though it's hard to see how the result of such efforts will yield more productive results than, say, regime change attempts abroad. Pouring American taxpayer dollars into those countries is a dubious solution, namely because it doesn't work.

"We made a mistake," Biden said during October's presidential debate, referencing Obama's immigration approach. "It took too long to get it right. I'll be president of the United States, not vice president of the United States." In a very short time, he will indeed be president, and time will tell if he gets it right.

  1. I’m predicting Biden’s immigration policy will be a disaster.

    1. Everything Biden touches will be a disaster.

      1. Everything government touches turns to shit. Regardless of who’s in charge.

        1. Trump was the best President in US History.

In spite of all the Lefty bureaucrats working from the inside to destroy America.

          1. Was? Past tense? From the same person who insisted this day would never come? Just checking, but as memory serves, you seemed to have dozens of “just wait until” moments where Trump was going to pull a second term out of the ashes. You don’t have to admit you wrong. It’s enough that I know.

            1. Then why did you bring it up?

              1. I get paid 95 $ each hour for work at home on my PC. I never thought I’d have the option to do it however my old buddy NTW is gaining 65k$/month to month by carrying out this responsibility and she gave me how.

          2. Trump banned bump stocks and wanted to use eminent domain to try and take away people’s private property on the border. What is best about that?

The user said Trump was the best president we ever had and I want to know what’s best about using eminent domain to take away people’s private property and what’s best about banning bump stocks.

Is the reason you couldn’t also answer my question because there’s nothing best about it or do you agree with both things? What’s your stance on both subjects? I’m curious to know.

I’ll tell you my opinion though. There’s nothing best about using eminent domain nor is there anything best about banning bump stocks. They’re both anti-libertarian things and they’re both why I disagree with Trump being the best president we ever had. If he was the best president we ever had he wouldn’t have banned bump stocks or wanted to use eminent domain.

  2. “Trump’s Immigration Policy Was Brutal and Inhumane. Will Biden Fix It?”

This seems to assume that naturalization policy is the president’s to fix. It isn’t.

Setting the rules of naturalization is explicitly an enumerated power of Congress. The reason some powers are specifically enumerated to Congress is because we can’t be a free society if we can have things like wars, taxes, spending, treaties, and, yes, naturalization policies inflicted on us over our objections and against our will.

Democracy has a proper purview, and Congress has proper roles within that. Setting naturalization policy is well within both the proper purview of democracy and Congress’ proper role.

It should be noted that overstepping the proper role of Congress within the proper purview of democracy has real world consequences that go beyond the immediate policy–with Brexit, the rise of the National Front in France, and the election of Donald Trump all being excellent examples. All forms of populism, from left to right, are in reaction to elitists inflicting such policies on an unwilling society. To the extent that Biden “fixes” immigration policy, he will merely provoke another populist reaction–maybe even stronger this time than the one that brought Trump to power.

There is no long term substitute for persuasion.

Short term (over the next two years), expect the Democrats, with or without the crutch of Democracy, to inflict their will on us over our objections and against our will. To an explicitly authoritarian party, what’s the point of having power if not to lord over the people?

    1. Biden’s policy is already clear. Anybody that arrives at the border, can stay … and, after some hand wringing and pretending in the national theater known as Congress, will be granted amnesty.

We need a billion people in the United States, even if the vast majority of them are borderline illiterate farmhands and laborers from Central America that care only about the next government handout.

      1. I will welcome these new Americans as they walk across private property and toward freedom, including free housing, free healthcare, and free SNAP benefits for their 8 children.

        1. You paint a picture of a glorious future!

          1. Even more glorious if you hear it in the voice of that crustacean from Futurama cartoons. Try it.

        2. Those 8 children aren’t theirs. They’ll be selling them as soon as they can.

      2. There will be no amnesty. With $15 minimum wages, the employers can’t afford to lose their slave class.

        1. Aren’t we in ballot stuffing mode?

The bill to make DC a state has already been introduced, with 205 Democrat sponsors.

          https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/51/cosponsors?

Think of all those formerly illegal votes!

    2. The Constitution grants Congress the power to set rules for naturalization, not immigration.

      1. I emigrated inside your mom’s snatch last night.

      2. Article I, section 9.

The migration or importation of such persons as any of the states now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each person.

As of 1808, Congress has the power to regulate immigrants. Before that, the states had the power.

        1. If ChemJeff thinks the populist reaction to inflicting an unpopular naturalization policy on the American people, over their objections and against their will, won’t materialize–because he calls it “immigration” rather than “naturalization”–then he’s wrong at best.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden will rejoin the unconstitutional Paris treaty later today, and, like I said, inflicting these things on people, outside the proper purview of democracy and against their will, is the very stuff from which populism is made.

The reason the Constitution enumerates these powers to Congress are no more arbitrary than the reasons the Constitution restricts Congress from making laws that infringe on speech or religion.

          1. You are dishonestly conflating the terms immigration and naturalization. Stop being a dishonest windbag, Ken.

            1. You are dishonestly conflating the terms meaning and reality. Stop being dishonest.

“I don’t like all these illegal immigrants increasing my taxes and depressing wages and getting preferential treatment and devaluing my vote. Oh, you said Congress can only regulate naturalization? Never mind, I’m extremely happy now!

Fun fact: necessary and proper. You can’t regulate naturalization without regulating immigration, otherwise an infinite number of people can simply enter your nation and compel you to naturalize them. Ironically, this is exactly what is happening.

            2. No he isn’t. You’re playing one of your patented semantical word games again. You’ve been slapped down on this very subject numerous times here.

Unless you have some very compelling evidence to the contrary, Ken’s position is the status quo, and generally accepted among credible legal scholars.

        2. Umm. That refers to enslaved persons, not voluntarily immigrants.

          1. No, it refers to both enslaved persons (importation) and voluntary immigrants (migration).

Slaves are moved about by their owners like livestock. They are imported and exported, they do not get to migrate.

            1. The rules for joining a club should properly be made by the club members themselves.

I’m here to persuade my fellow club members that they should support changing the rules to bring in more members. There is nothing that undermines my argument for that quite like those who stupidly argue that the opinions of our fellow club members don’t and shouldn’t matter.

To the extent that people who want the rules changed like I do foolishly claim that the opinions of our fellow club members don’t and shouldn’t matter, that’s the extent to which it becomes difficult to persuade my fellow club members to change the rules.

It’s practically impossible to persuade people of anything once you’ve tried to persuade them that their opinions don’t and shouldn’t matter. And, like I said, the rules on how people join the club is properly within the purview of the club members themselves.

              1. The rules for joining a club should properly be made by the club members themselves.

Agreed, where “joining the club” means NATURALIZATION.

Congress should set the rules for NATURALIZATION. There ought to be an orderly process defined by law in order for a person to become a US citizen.

IMMIGRATION is different. IMMIGRATION simply refers to a person moving from one location to another location, irrespective of one’s citizenship status.

Do I think you ought to have a vote as to who gets to “join the club” as a citizen? Yes.

Do I think you ought to have a vote as to who gets to move in next door to you? NO. Your neighbor should be free to use his property as he sees fit, even if that means selling it to people that you don’t personally approve of.

                1. Death to the nation state!

                  Totes not communist at all

                2. And that is in no way what we are discussing here. Another spurious analogy from Jeffy.

      3. Naturalization laws are dependent on migration, namely time in country dummy.

        1. Changing what you call things doesn’t change their nature. If we called it “winning the lottery”, having a root canal would still be the same thing.

          1. Except immigration and naturalization are actually two different things. You are the one trying to smuggle immigration into the term naturalization when they are not one and the same.

            1. Not in terms of the constitution or the federal government. Your insistence to the contrary literally has bearing.

    3. Ken. The sun rose today. I checked. I’m giving odds that it will set this evening. The planet continues to spin on its axis. Just thought you’d like to know.

      1. And the ultimate causes of populism remain what they always were.

  3. We pass immigration laws to shut the cattle up, and then choose to ignore them because the law means nothing.

    Fuck off, Reason.

  4. Of course Biden will earn all those Reason.com staff endorsements by implementing Charles Koch’s open borders agenda. In fact I expect him to liberate Drumpf’s concentration camps by the end of today.

    #OpenBorders

    1. “Let my people go”!

  5. “Trump’s Immigration Policy Was Brutal and Inhumane.”

Except that Trump had repeatedly urged Congress to enact immigration reform legislation, and promised to sign immigration reform legislation (that would give US citizenship to millions of children of undocumented immigrants).

But Pelosi and Schumer convinced, cajoled, threatened virtually all other Congressional Democrats to oppose ANY and ALL immigration reform measures because they’d make Trump appear to be the compassionate immigration reformer he was/is.

    1. Kids. In. Cages.

Didn’t you see all the kids in cages, and how Trump personally walked around detention facilities throwing gruel in their faces while making them drink toilet water?

      1. The cages were mandated by Obama and Biden, not Trump.

Even many of the photos of illegal immigrants’ children (that left wing media propagandists repeatedly showed to trash Trump) were taken during the Obama/Biden administration.

      2. “making them drink toilet water”
At least he did not make them drink Brawndo the thirst mutilator.

        1. It’s got electrolytes

          1. It’s what [migrant children] crave

  6. Yes Biden will fix it, out of the kindness of his heart. And the chance for 11 million more Dem voters. Refugee caravans can be allocated to various swing states and serve as volunteers for ballot harvesting efforts to promote democracy.

    1. Wont help the Democrats. Since election laws and the Constitution dont matter, I look forward to Trump Jr winning the presidential election in 2024 by 1 billion votes.

      1. 30 million ballots from a hay field outside of every Mayberry.

      2. Running against dear old Dad?

      3. Which one?

  7. In sharp contrast to Pelosi and Schumer, Trump repeatedly supported immigration reform legislation, and said he’d sign any bill that Congress enacted.

Falsely blaming Trump for the harmful actions of Democrats is disingenuous, but that’s now to be expected at unReason.

    1. I know, right? How dare Pelosi and Schumer force Trump and Sessions to establish their ‘zero-tolerance’ policy for migrants.

      1. Jeff lies yet again. Pelosi and Schumer refused to support legislation that would have granted citizenship to millions of undocumented children, while Trump supported it.

      2. Silly. Biden is paying off Mexico and Guatemala to make sure those migrants cannot make it to the border. An easy web search of just a few days ago. An executive order on federal minimum wage takes care of big construction, meat packing. The new department of domestic terrorism (cause white supremacy) takes care off narco migrants, gangs. Better optics at the border and virtue signaling thrown in for good measure. I’m sorry if you are an immigration attorney, but the Democrats are Masters of virtue..signaling

  8. “Yet although DACA has widespread bipartisan support, it was always on precarious footing since Obama implemented it via executive order.”

You mean an executive order the presidency had no proper constitutional authority to impose?

That is a reason for it to be precarious.

  9. For the next 100 days, at least one cable tv news station (Fox News) will continue showing the growing caravan of folks in Central America walking to the US border to become citizens.

If Biden continues to welcome illegal immigrants into the US, the caravan will continue growing. Perhaps Biden will require the illegal immigrants to wear masks (to cross the border into the US).

    1. Not walking, riding busses paid for by someone unknown. They only walk for the camera.

Try actually walking Mexico from north to south and see if you get to the US border as fast as the caravans do.

      1. “…riding busses paid for by someone unknown…”

This. Figure out who is paying and supporting these people, and you’ll figure out who’s really running things in this country.

        1. Figure out who is paying

It’s the Mexican government. They don’t want the “refugees” in their country any more than we do so they are busing them through. Also, buses are expensive, which is why they couldn’t pay for the wall.

      2. Try actually walking Mexico from north to south and see if you get to the US border as fast as the caravans do.

        Or alive.

  10. Biden doesn’t have to fix it, because he’s a democrat. No one will call him out on that.

It’s kind of like how Republicans don’t really have to fix government spending or overreach.

Neither party has to actually address the issues they blame on the other party. Apparently, that’s how the system works.

    1. Biden doesn’t have to fix it, because he’s a democrat. No one will call him out on that.

This. I expect nothing to happen in regards to immigration. At least not before 2022. They’ll have bigger priorities like the GND, establishing a “truth and reconciliation commission,” and passing some kind of new PATRIOT Act like law aimed at “domestic terrorism.”

    2. It’s time we shut down the mainstream media as traitors.

  11. Trump’s Immigration Policy was Mean and Bad

I think you’re whining about illegal aliens, Billy. Trump’s legal immigration policies were bog-standard.

  12. Trump’s Immigration Policy Was Brutal and Inhumane. Will Biden Fix It?

    No.

  13. From separating families at the border as part of a “zero-tolerance” policy,

We’re still running with this complete media lie?

  14. Freedom of association means freedom of association.

It means bakers should be free to associate, or not to associate, with gay couples.

It means AWS should be free to associate, or not to associate, with Parler.

It means employers should be free to associate, or not to associate, with prospective employees of their choice.

It means landlords should be free to associate, or not to associate, with prospective tenants of their choice.

Either freedom of association means something, or it doesn’t.

    1. Poor Lefties hate the Constitution and just make stuff up to suit their Commie purposes.

    2. Do you realize how naïve and immature you sound, how idiotic? honest question.

You completely ignore the whole entitlement, welfare, and other ways government is involved in this association because you’re an idiot.

Countries exist. They have for millennia. Deal with it.

      1. There is no such thing as an “honest question” coming from you, Jesse.

        1. *snort*

Got Sriracha up my nose. Funny. Sneeze, sneeze. That hurts. Thanks.

    3. No one is opposing that. Interact with whom you choose (like your NAMBLA associates worldwide). They aren’t guaranteed the right to enter the US.

      1. By the way Jeffy, I knew you were going to resort to that cliche of a spurious argument. You pitch the same fit every time in this subject.

You’re wrong, we’re right. You have no real argument. Stop shitposting here and embarrassing yourself.

  15. Is this a joke? Trump’s immigration policy was largely a continuation of the status quo.

    1. It was enforcing the laws there were meant to just shut us up.

    2. The Commies at unreason remembered how to put Democrat dick back in their mouths after these 4 years. Amazing.

    3. So “Obama did it first” means it was ok?

      1. No obviously but you do also understand that it is exasperating to hear that I should be outraged about one guy doing something but not the other?

        1. I don’t get it. Reason was plenty critical of Obama before Trump, and Biden’s been president for less than a day. Give them time. They’ll be shitting all over his policies soon enough.

      2. You biden cultists sure do hate any criticism or calls of hypocrisy of your party.

      3. So “Obama did it first” means it was ok?

First? Immigration policy in the US has been a clusterfuck for 50 years!

    1. [Trump] played an important role in intensifying the elite turn against the ideals of the New World. By launching rhetorical crusades against woke excesses without creating the institutional or intellectual apparatus for preserving and celebrating American virtues, Trump helped to make things worse. He enraged the cultural elites and provoked them to ever-more illiberal assaults on freedom of speech and historical memory while failing to create the organisational structures that might have withstood such assaults. Trump was an instrument too blunt to be able to hold back the new crusade against the American project.

Negative words about the greatest President in history? Not around here, buster.

  16. He won’t fix it, but at least he won’t purposefully orphan any kids for the crime of their parents wanting a better life.

    1. The fact that you believe that lie tells me much.

Hey, a stranger is coming across the border, and there is a kid with him.

You good calling it a parent-child relationship?

      Yep, I’m good.

Done. Go with God, my friend, write if you find work!

      1. Jeff is pro child molestation. So he isn’t worried about the kids.

    2. Just so you know, I used to travel regularly across the Canadian border. I was a single father who would often have my kid in tow. Guess what got me pulled out of the vehicle line multiple times, while I cooled my heels for an hour? Something something child in tow that I had to prove was mine.

      1. Even to leave the country on cruise ship or plane with kids in tow requires birth certificates and proof of parenting. For one parent to travel with a kid requires a notarized letter granting permission from the missing parent. Crossing borders with minors is not a small affair taken lightly.

        1. Right, now try it while slipping across said border in the dark of night, with no identification papers.

      2. Wow. That really is brutal and inhumane.

  17. On border security, Biden says he will cease construction of enhanced border barriers and instead will hone in on technology to “to expedite screening and enhance the ability to identify narcotics and other contraband at every land, air, and sea port of entry,”

    The LIBERTARIAN MOMENT is back!

    1. W’s techno-wall is back!

      1. On border security, Biden says he will cease construction of enhanced border barriers and instead will hone in on technology to “to expedite screening and enhance the ability to identify narcotics and other contraband at every land, air, and sea port of entry,” the administration notes in a press release.

        W’s techno-wall is back!

Yep, pretty much. Actually “the status quo is back” might be more complete.

  18. In that vein, the newly minted president will seek to focus on addressing the root causes of why so many Central American migrants are flooding the U.S. border

Well, destroying the economy will certainly reduce the incentive to come here, I just didn’t expect him to be quite so up front about his intentions. /sarc

    1. Regularly reading Spiked, though British, really hammers home just how left-ish Reason has swung. The cultural affinity for the woke brigade here really colors the rest of their analysis.

      1. I have to go to a different continent to get a more sober take on the US media landscape.

      2. Exactly.

    2. If gay roles can only be played by gay actors, does that mean that only gays people should be allowed to make gay cakes? Cut gay hair? When stated as employment protection it sounds so much better. I’m not refusing to bake your cake because I hate you. I’m protecting gay jobs because I care.

    1. I can answer this for anyone who isn’t clear. The answer is NO, it will never end

      1. Well, Kamala Harris is part of the Biden Administration, so technically the media sycophancy will continue even when they throw Joke under the bus.

        1. It’s pure collectivist/Soviet syncophancy.
The press knows Biden is just a prop, and I bet a lot of them know the same is true of Kamala.

  20. No, the last days of Trump were not ‘just like Hitler’

For four years, commentators have triviliased the horrors of Nazi Germany to score cheap political points.

    1. I used to know a woman that ate like Hitler.

  21. How bad minorities became ‘white’

Black and Latino Trump voters have been accused of suffering from ‘multiracial whiteness’.

I’m getting more better and bestest commentary in 30 seconds of scanning the Spiked main page.

    1. Good piece. Going to have to start visiting there. The fact that so many Reason writers never push back on the absurd claims of racism and white supremacy balderdash coming from the Left makes this sight a Left wing propaganda site anymore.

I’m glad I gave up my subscription to Reason some years ago. Just a bunch of poseurs writing here anymore. A few good balanced articles in a sea of increasingly left-wing propaganda.

    2. Yep, that’s the working class cities. Highest Republican vote in urban areas in 60 years. You ain’t black or Latino if you didn’t vote for Biden.

    3. Biden did tell them they weren’t black. His lackeys are just following their orders.

  22. Has Biden threatened to “manage the hell” out of this too? That’s one way to know whether he intends to fuck it up within the first 100 days or whether he’ll wait to fuck it up until later.

  23. So…were the lulz worth it?

And how long before COVID goes from an Illuminati hoax that Trump rightly ignored to an existential threat that, Gosh Darnit, Biden isn’t doing enough about?

      1. So…no?

    1. They all know the Trump vaccine will kick in within 100 days so Biden is mandating masks for 100 days and will get credit when Covid cases start to fall. The plan is about as obvious as the stolen election that required Biden to have a militarized inauguration. No protests or resistance will be allowed. You will submit or else.

  24. No one cares about immigration anymore. Status quo in full effect.

  25. No. Biden will just make it awful in other ways.

  26. More interesting question – will Biden pardon Trump in order to “heal the nation”?

Ford did it and survived (but Nixon was an amateur crook compared to Trump).

    1. Nixon got caught.

    2. Turd’s an amateur compared to Tony.

    1. Future View: The New Censorship
Have the social-media platforms gone too far or acted too late? Students debate.

TL;DR – the future elites of America don’t think Silicon Valley went far enough.

      Free speech is doomed.

  27. It is not so much President Biden, but the people of this country who need to get our heads around a sane immigration policy. You can’t let everyone in and you can’t keep everyone out. So consider this;

Give the childhood arrivals a path to citizenship. We invested in these kids with education and training, accept that they are ours.

For the people that come here to work and leave, make it easy for them to do just that.

For those that want to come and stay, make a path available. It doesn’t have to be easy, but it should be possible.

For those who don’t want to come, but are fleeing troubles in their own country. Find ways to help, so they can stay put. Get rid of drug prohibitions in this country, that support drug cartels in other countries. Don’t pour money into countries but find way to effectively help these people. I believe there is a way.

    1. You’re missing the other side of the equation. Democrats declared themselves unwilling to give up anything to get such a regime for the immigrants – no fines for lawbreakers, no increased security, no nothing.

That has always been the only way to get a deal done. But the political incentives to get a deal done have not been there for them. Slamming a one-sided deal through the legislature is not a recipe for lasting reform and the lowering of the temperature that Biden professes to be a priority; doing so will create exactly the backlash that led to Trump in the firs place.

      1. This is not about sides, it is about making sense.

        1. Uhhh… what you think makes sense doesn’t make sense to roughly half the population. You gonna need a better answer to that than “shut up, fugly, Trump-cultist hicks.”

          1. Immigration is not that big a concern to most people. At its highest it was about 23%.

        2. “Sides” exist because that’s how we communicate what “makes sense.” Your not prioritizing security doesn’t make it any less of a concern.

There’s two interested parties here: the potential immigrants and existing Americans. A truly sensible policy needs to make sense for both.

          1. We have plenty of security on the border. We need solutions. Look at it this way. If a city has a problem with people speeding in a residential area. They can up fines and patrols, but a better solution is speed bumps. Fines (especially for poor people) and patrols are unlikely to lower illegal crossings. We need other solutions. Best idea is to make them more comfortable in their own country.

            1. Making them more comfortable in their own country has been one of the biggest failures in any policy attempted. Are we going to extend welfare to the citizens of these countries and if so how will it be paid for? Are we going to weed out the corruption in their governments that gladly take all the money we want to send and make themselves wealthy. What about the crime? How will we solve the crime and poverty in those countries when we can’t even do it here? The latest hoard heading for our border to take advantage of what Biden and Democrats have promised them is numbering nearly 15 thousand and growing. If they succeed tens of thousands more will follow. Biden and the Democrat’s immigration policies have already failed. The coming humanitarian crisis at our border is going to be huge.
The best solution was to make the border secure to discourage them from coming in the first place. Many are sick with Covid so this should be a real calamity for Mexico and the US.
For just a moment people should stop and think. Who is feeding them and supplying them with water and essentials needed to walk all these miles? Also we should consider the lack of reporting by the the msm.

[…]Best idea is to make them more comfortable in their own country…”
              Most idiotic post is this.
Hey, M4e, head down there, make ’em ‘comfortable’ and get back to us.
              Or grow up.
              What a fucking ignoramus…

    2. “You can’t let everyone in and you can’t keep everyone out.”

That was Trump’s policy. So you agree Trump’s immigration policy was sane.

      1. I thought Trump Administration’s policy was poorly implemented.

  28. Yeah it`s Possible…Anybody can earn 250$+ daily… You can earn from 6000-12000 a month or even more if you work as a full time job…It’s easy, just follow instructions on this page, read it carefully from start to finish… It’s a flexible job But a good
eaning opportunity.. Here is More information.

  29. lmao. no.

  30. Obama was also no immigration hero.

FFS Bily! The guy immigrated here from Kenya and became president! How much more does he have to do?

  31. Trump’s Immigration Policy Was Brutal and Inhumane. Will Biden Fix It?

Biden can at least tear out the minefields, remove the machine gun emplacements, and order the death squads to stand down. But as far as fixing immigration policy? No. There is no fixing the fact that many more people want to get into the US than are legally allowed, no more so than fixing the drug problem or the prostitution problem, the gambling problem or the drinking or smoking or over-eating problem. You simply cannot stop people from doing what they want to do if they want to do it badly enough. Besides which, as should be apparent from what they’ve managed to get accomplished over the last 20 years or so, Congress is broken and can’t get anything accomplished without the President leading them by the hand on it. And government as a whole fucks up everything they touch. The fact is, immigration is as intractable a problem as reforming Social Security or Medicaid/Medicare spending or dealing with the national debt. It’s never going to happen.

    1. “He promises to be better.” – Binion

Dude he promised. If Billy reads your post it’ll be like him finding out Santa isn’t real all over again.

      1. Shhh. He might not know that yet.

  32. 1/3 of the U.S. population is over 65. Replacement births will not replace boomers when they start dying off.

The problem for everyone I know with illegal immigration is that property taxes fund those daycare centers we call public schools. The department of education (teachers unions), the department of agriculture (the farm Bill, lunches) love illegal immigration. Local taxpayers, not so much.

Illegal Immigration would get a lot further with home daycare centers, run by other migrants, and paid for the same way I used to barter (or pay) a family or friend to watch each other’s kids.

Shit, how did we get to the point of spending $80,000 per child, with a 20percent graduation rate in our lovely Democrat run cities.

    1. It’s an interesting dynamic that increased supply and lower demand lowers prices.

But what if that market dynamic affects people’s willingness to reproduce.

The financial situation of average Americans is likely reflected in birth rates. If they think the supply of labor is high and wages are cheap, cutting back on producing more people seems about right. But when supply is low and wages high reflecting demand, population rates might just go up.

Strange no one thinks to try market economics on family formation.

People just vastly prefer theshort-term less resource intensive path of immigration- which may be more costly long term than the other.

      1. Wages aren’t high when supply is low, that means no growth, no increases in material supply, no one to buy stuff (rural areas). Competing with a world population of 6-7-8 billion.

Public Schools and meals for illegals was a SCOTUS decision. And there, with that one decision, the rise of populism.

  33. Wow.. Reason is so out of touch with REALITY, the
the Reality of the unemployment on the ground in the U.S
the Reality of the pathetic wages forced by illegal immigration and rampant immigration, yes LOW WAGES are DIRECTLY impacted by unfettered immigration & illegal immigration, JFC
Realty of the destruction of the middle class in the USA.

Does Reason have ANY authors that are from the middle class?
Does Reason have any writers who know what the hell is going on in this country in any way, in job sectors being killed by6 immigration and illegal immigration?
Why don’t you get off your ass and investigate the REALITY of:
In CA: construction wages suppressed by illegal immigration for decades.
In FL, TX, CA tech sector wages suppressed by waves of H1B Visas that work for 1/2 the cost of American Citizens.
In ALL states the impact of H1B and Student Visas suppressing the American Citizen Student introductions to Tech Companies.
These are long period events that ARE happening and NO statistics that you scrape up to show otherwise will cover up the REALITY that Americans are feeling and SEEING every god damn day, Every day they are FIRED only to train their immigrant replacement who gets paid 1/2, Every day an American Student is over looked for the 2 Student Visa geniuses,, EVERY day the poor black man who CAN’T find a dry wall job to COVER his expenses to raise his family because the illegals work for 3.00 per hour.
REASON is the purveyor of the destruction of the middle class, as I am sure you will find statistics and reports and college professors to “prove” that immigration is a benefit to America and call your reporting honest, when in REALITY you proved only that immigration benefits ONLY the SUPER RICH and large corporations.

I suspect ALL your writers are upper class/RICH elites who have never lived nor experienced the lower & middle class life style that Americans have to traverse. Your publication has a blind spot, like ALL other MSM: you don’t know what the hell the American People are going through.
Furthermore, all Reason writers write from a GLOBAL perspective foregoing any viewpoint that addresses the target of its readership: the American Citizen. Go to hell Reason, u are a clear contributor to the demise that is the American Experiment. Scum bags.

    1. “I suspect ALL your writers are upper class/RICH elites who have never lived nor experienced the lower & middle class life style that Americans have to traverse.”

I suspect your class warfare ain’t going anywhere. Grow up, learn a skill and STFU.

  34. “Government” is Brutal and Inhumane. Biden Will not Fix It.

  35. Trump’s immigration policies were nearly identical to Bush’s and Obama’s. The main difference was the news coverage.

  36. of course, the author fails to develop why it was “inhumane”

    1. Because Orange Man Bad.

      1. Orange man is now in the land of oranges.

        Time to let it go.

        1. Are you talking to the author or being a smug asshole to the people commenting on the article he wrote?

          1. Echospinner is certainly a smug piece of shit who has not suffered anything from the D-mandated lock-downs.

          2. Oh, and also a TDS-addled piece of shit.

  37. President Trump tried valiantly to create a rational immigration process. If you are approved to come to the US, come now, we’re glad to have you. If you are seeking asylum because of imminent danger to yourself or your family due to racial, religious, gender or ethnic bias, get out of your country immediately, go to a US embassy or consulate and apply for asylum. Wait in the safe place in which you have arrived. If you meet the requirements for asylum and the US has not already admitted its full quota of asylees, come on in. If you want to come to the US because your life sucks and your government is wrecked or you husband is a jerk, change your job, change your government or change your husband. Feel free to apply for an immigrant visa to the US which will be processed in an orderly fashion, or get you name in the immigration lottery. Good luck. That was inhumane how ? It gave all the desperate folks the same chance to get to the US, not just the ones that live next door. It allowed for economic immigration. I made sense.

  38. Apparently Biden doesn’t understand what undocumented illegal aliens means. How do you know if someone was here before 1/1/21 if they are undocumented? There is a hoard of nearly 15 thousand headed this way with many sick with Covid. They are coming because of the promises of the Democrats and Biden. If President Trump had remained they would not have come.
Biden has also reversed the ban on terrorist from the Middle East. We can now enjoy the same terrorist attacks that the EU has been dealing with.
How is Biden going to deal with the coming humanitarian crisis at our border? How will he console the families of those murdered by terrorist?
After the summer of Biden supporters rioting, looting and burning down minority owned small businesses, murdering innocent Ameicans and law enforcement what were people thinking that supported and voted for Biden?

  39. Brutal and inhumane immigration policy – separating fake families that endangered the lives of children, some 2 years before a pandemic of biblical proportion hit the nation.

Tell me something. If Hillary was president and she granted asylum to thousands of migrants in 2017 or 2018, what would be the state of the country today, especially California? “Well things couldn’t be worse than it is now”? I’m sure Mexico would have loved being used as a pilgrimage trek every two years by migrants from their neighbors. You think Mexico would be fortifying their borders now if Trump didn’t pressure their government to hold the line? He called it an invasion, and soon the Mexicans who hate him agreed.

Libertarians and liberals exist in the same Kumbayah world where everyone is inherently good and prosperity is a matter of removing certain structural barriers. Real life doesn’t work that way. CA is a house of cards built on immigration and Covid is burning it all down. Most of these people are poor and need to work in physical locations and nonessential industry like leisure and tourism. Those are halfway dead. When all the wealthy libs flee the state, it’ll be unable to feed all the poor people that remained, and the process to becoming Venezuela will be inevitable.

Stop asking the government to bring in 20 million people in a pandemic where existing immigrants and citizens are shut out of jobs. Just fucking stop it. Outsiders don’t have magic powers to enrich their host nation. America did things differently and immigrants benefitted from that, but that will all change soon enough.

    1. “…Libertarians and liberals exist in the same Kumbayah world where everyone is inherently good and prosperity is a matter of removing certain structural barriers…”

One of those is not like the other and you should seek help, or STFU.

    2. “Stop asking the government to bring in 20 million people…”

If we simply opened the borders and let everyone in, it would be hundreds of millions.

      1. I thought Trump Administration’s policy was poorly implemented.

        1. Sorry wrong response.

  40. How many low-IQ mestizos does America need?

    1. We get them with at least a 6th grade education, which means that saves us money. They do better economically than other poor folk in this country cuz they stay married and have better extended families. But they’re not being acculturated. Add in the morons who believe in the fantasy of systemic racism and all the nonsense that flows from that, and we have a 4 star CF.

  41. “President Donald Trump likes to win.”

What type of writer starts an article like this? This is the dumbest opening sentence I’ve read in a long time.

Who doesn’t like to win? Do you know someone who likes to lose? I didn’t read much past that because that sentence stuck in my head and, like moldy cheese in a salad, tainted the rest of the article.

  42. Apparently the word maso-chist is prohibited here, even an as anodyne a context as suggesting that anyone who’d want to try to clean up behind Trump must be one. This frigging nanny is braindead………. Click Here For More Info

  43. Americans are such morons on immigration. They think the rule of law is supreme, but it doesn’t apply to illegals. They know its hypocrisy…that they’re here proves it’s a farce.

The low end of the totem pole of income had the pleasure of having 4-5 job offers before COVID due to Trump’s policies. Now, after a year, when they might get one…what then? You think the assault on the Capitol was bad, it will be much worse.
