Millions of Users Are Flooding Encrypted Apps After Social Media Purges
Plus: Supreme Court declines more election challenges, Lisa Montgomery gets temporary stay of execution, and more...

Encrypted apps are seeing a surge in downloads, with Signal installs reaching a record high for the company. "Signal saw approximately 7.5 million installs globally through the Apple App Store and Google Play store between Jan. 6 and Jan. 10," notes CNBC. "That's 43 times the number from the previous week. It is [the] highest week or even monthly install number for Signal in the app's history." Over the same period, 5.6 million people reportedly downloaded Telegram.
These are global download numbers, so we should be careful assigning a too United States-centric cause for them. But the U.S. alone provides multiple plausible reasons why more people might be turning to the privacy of encrypted chats like Signal and Telegram.
Twitter has been booting a ton of accounts in the past week (including @RealDonaldTrump). Many mainstream social media platforms have been extra jumpy about potential conspiracy theories and misinformation, and Parler is temporarily down after Amazon canceled its web hosting account for allegedly not cracking down on this sort of content enough. Meanwhile, federal agencies, local cops, members of the media, and citizen spies have all been combing social sites for evidence of involvement in the Capitol riot or future far-right organizing. Is it any wonder people might be fleeing for less public (and less accessible to officials, even with a court order) alternatives?
And does anyone think the Capitol and U.S. statehouses are now safer, QAnon conspiracies less likely to flourish, or election fraud fever dreams less likely to stir action now that they've been driven to less visible platforms with a smaller chance of pushback from dissenting voices, outside discovery, or platform moderation?
"On Telegram, where members of the Proud Boys and other militia groups host popular channels, there have been calls for people to organize for marches on state capitol buildings on Saturday (Jan. 16)," notes The New York Times:
On one Telegram channel, which has over 20,000 followers, addresses were posted for those buildings, as well as the addresses for tech companies, including Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Google.
Members of the Boogaloo movement, another far-right group, have also organized on Telegram and Signal for rallies on Sunday (Jan 17). On 4chan and other messaging groups fliers were posted calling for another march on Washington, D.C., on Jan. 20. In comments under those posts, people have voiced support for targeting various news organizations like The New York Times and CNN.
Encrypted platforms certainly aren't just for people plotting something nefarious, of course. The apps are very popular among journalists. They're an economical alternative to text messaging for people with international contacts. And so on.
There are all sorts of benign reasons why these apps might be experiencing a surge right now in particular. For instance, users are reportedly fleeing Facebook-owned WhatsApp over concerns about the company's privacy policy changes.
Other platforms are losing users due to state censorship and meddling.
WeChat—an app immensely popular in China and among Chinese immigrants elsewhere—is also suffering from a host of issues, including alleged shadowbanning on behalf of Chinese state forces and a simultaneous attempt by the Trump administration to ban it from the U.S.
The situation shows the futility of trying to fix social and political issues by threatening tech platforms that won't hide evidence of them. The issues and the ideas driving them don't go away, they just go underground. And the only way to reach them there is to undermine privacy protections for political dissidents from authoritarian regimes, journalists, whistleblowers, all sorts of political organizers, and literally everyone else in the process.

Decriminalize prostitution to stop police violence, say sex worker advocates. "More researchers are making the case to decriminalize sex work, joining calls by other advocates who say doing so might improve public health outcomes," writes Chelsea Cirruzzo at U.S. News & World Report.
Tamika Spellman, a policy and advocacy associate with HIPS, says her worst interactions while she was a sex worker were with the police.
"Everywhere that I have been across the country I have been sexually assaulted by the police," says Spellman, who is Black and transgender. "It was more frequent here in the District of Columbia."
"Sex work needs to be decriminalized," she says. Without doing so, she adds, "violence flourishes."
ELECTION 2020
The Supreme Court has rejected more challenges to the 2020 election results:
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday steered clear of more cases involving bids by President Donald Trump and some Republican allies to overturn his election loss and turned away a Democratic effort to expand mail-in voting in Texas.
The justices, as expected, declined to expedite consideration of eight Trump-related cases including three filed by his campaign challenging the election results in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, two of the states he lost to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden. It already was clear that the court had no intention to intervene because it had not acted before Congress last week certified Biden's victory in the Nov. 3 election.

Kicking these folks off Facebook, Twitter, etc. and having them go to encrypted sites is an own-goal. They have previously been easy to track (should the FBI be on the ball), but now will be able to completely hide their activities and plans from the law.
Smart, very smart.......not.
Any alternative sites not on Tor will be down within the month.
If they can't get at their hosting, then Visa, MasterCard and Paypal will remove their support, and if that's not an option or issue the FBI will shut them down over some kiddie porn or something magically found on their servers.

U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D–Wash.) tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, a result she attributes to "being locked down in a secured room at the U.S Capitol where numerous Republican lawmakers recklessly refused to wear masks in the moments after the January 6 attack."
No mention of the other people being infected.
Apparently a hate crime against a minority female.
Who knew gorillas could catch the covid?
Soon they will realize that person and animal has had if for a long time
Do those EVUL RETHUGLIKKKANZ have no decency?! *clucthes pearls, passes out on fainting couch*
So then at least one of them came up positive for Covid?
I mean, if you want to claim you got it from one of them, it stands to reason that one of them had it, so would therefore test positive, right?
Or am I getting this all wrong?
Because the report does not state that anyone else in the room tested positive....
Given the number of people in the House of Representatives, and the false positive rate of the test, this was bound to happen.
No mask = INFECTOR!!!!!
Didn't you get the memo?
She's a woman of color, asking a woman of color to provide evidence of her accusations is both racist and sexist. Report for re-education at once, citizen.
So her magical mask talisman didn't protect her from the evil Coofies?
Maybe she can sacrifice a goat to Shiva in exchange for a cure.
I've been repeatedly assured (by people who never provide any scientific evidence) that masks work, but only one way. Thus far nobody has ever bothered to explain to me why, if that's the case, people don't just wear a second mask inside out over the first one.
Haha.
It's because you aren't catching viruses. You are catching water drops. Since you are trying to stop nanometer scale viruses with holes in the 10s or 100s of micrometers, that just isn't happening. As long as there is a water droplet that the virus is entrained, it's possible, but it just becomes less likely as it goes further out.
Exhale into a mask, where water droplets are biggest and most concentrated, and you grab a significant chunk of the water and entrained viruses.
However, if you let it disperse into air, the water drops become smaller, or even evaporate entirely.
Even in the best case, it's nowhere near enough to qualify as protective equipment in normal circumstances. However, it is less effective at incoming air than outgoing.
Not proven.
What happens to the viruses when the droplets evaporate?
I'm sure masks do something to slow or catch some droplets. But it seems unlikely that it has more than a small marginal effect.
As the droplets evaporate, the virus is left behind. Having a somewhat "sticky" outer coating, it should adhere nicely to the fibers of the mask.
You kind of have that wrong Ben. When you exhale, cough or sneeze through a mask, it acts as a diffuser, creating the small droplets that you are trying to avoid. Yes, somebody else's mask may catch some droplets, but, it just keeps them in place in a nice warm, moist atmosphere where they can be drawn into the lungs at a later time. This defeats the body's natural mechanisms for defeating viruses and bacteria. Masks are to show compliance. Dr. Cryil Wect has said that they do no good other than alleviating alarm in some people.
Bingo
Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Total protonic reversal.
Don't cross the masks.
It's science.
Even better, there's actual video from the event that shows her not wearing a mask.
She has since called for all members who don't wear a mask to be fined and removed from the Capitol.
If she dies, she dies.
I'm so glad congress has developed contact tracing technology to the point where she can pinpoint exactly when and where she was infected. That is a revolution in the 'fight' against COVID that would immediately be able to identify and contain flare ups.
I encourage her to provide this to Jay Inslee so he can OPEN THE EFFING STATE!
No mention that only democrats got infected from a democrat. No republicans got infected or were sick. .
The House will now vote on impeachment on Wednesday.

It means conservative and conservative-leaning libertarian, and I coined it
Oh, that's what that means.
Tomorrow morning, Marshall Burt will be sworn into the Wyoming State House -- the first Libertarian elected to a state house since the 90s.
If a place like Wyoming can't get libertarians elected more often...
The U.S. has seen around 1.4 million new COVID-19 infections in the past week. The country "averaged more than 3,000 Covid-19 deaths per day" over the past week, notes CNN. "And Monday marked the seventh day in a row the country reported more than 200,000 new Covid-19 infections."
Masks and lockdowns don’t do much of anything at all.
"But think how bad things would have been without masks and lockdowns! Why, just look at this model!"
Looking at models just objectifies women, and anyone else who thinks they are a woman.
Speaking of models. It was funny watching EmRata have a better understanding of free speech issues than most of the cosplay libertarians here.
Thinking you are a woman makes you a woman, 100%, physically and spiritually. There is no biological difference between cis women and transwomen. Anyone who disagrees is a heretic who will face the wrath and judgement of blue haired fatties on tumblr.
ABOVE IS SARCASM
Sarcasm is racist!
And sexist, and homophobic, and transphobic, and blah, blah, blah...
No, they really will face the wrath of blue-haired fatties.
Why when we can compare populations instead? Compare California to Florida or Georgia.
the gorillas weren’t wearing masks and now have COVID...what more proof do you need?
They shouldn't have been lockdowned in a secure room with a bunch of Republicans.
Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) responds to the multiple allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct...
Finally made the big times.
U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D–Wash.) tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, a result she attributes to "being locked down in a secured room at the U.S Capitol where numerous Republican lawmakers recklessly refused to wear masks in the moments after the January 6 attack."
*CLAIMED WITHOUT EVIDENCE*
I thought the new catch phrase was "baseless." Did that not catch on? Are the media not doing that one anymore?
We have to #BelieveAllWomen, insisting that she provide any kind of proof for her claim in misogynistic.
"the January 6 attack."
Seriously, fuck the MSM. BLM/Antifa riots that cause billions in damage are "mostly peaceful protests" but a couple hundred idiots running around the Capital building taking selfies and breaking a few windows is an attack. Trump may be retarded, but he got one thing right. The media is an enemy to our nation.
Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf has resigned after multiple courts said his tenure wasn't legally authorized.
You can't fire me; I quit.
"Ah, but it's not a *legal* resignation."
Trump withdrew his nomination probably because he didn't go full fascist with the DHS. Same thing happened to William Barr. By the why, does Barr have good timing or what?
By the why? Idiot.
"Way", my bad.
He's right. You're an idiot.
Yeah that’s probably it.
Certainly the withdrawal had nothing to do with the court ruling that the appointment wasn’t legal.
But, no, it was something something fascist.
Well you're probably wrong because this wasn't the first district judge to rule this way so something else likely accounts for the withdrawal of the nomination.
The latest rulings and the fact that he would be out anyhow in 7 days and a wake-up?
Or perhaps Trump was trying hard to keep him after the first challenge, but gave up?
Funny thing almost none of Clintons staff ever got clearance. I think it was over 50%
And Monday marked the seventh day in a row the country reported more than 200,000 new Covid-19 infections.
Is that reported in stealth scare quotes?
Does that make it an official "grim milestone"?
Cases is now infections. Raising the stakes once again.
The infected will be dealt with accordingly.
The justices, as expected, declined to expedite consideration of eight Trump-related cases...
Someone doesn't want to be packed.
Decriminalize prostitution to stop police violence...
Ha, we're way past caring about that anymore.
Meanwhile, federal agencies, local cops, members of the media, and citizen spies have all been combing social sites for evidence of ... far-right organizing.
Hmm. Couldn't such combing in itself be evidence of far-right organizing by federal agencies, local cops, members of the media, and citizen spies ?
So qanon was right?
Citizen Spies. Karens reach elevated status
Funny, none of these groups were doing shit about BLM/Antifa activities online. Broken windows and selfies = billions in property damage.
Idiots do.
Maybe idiots like you, Fist. I remember when your thing was all about making lame jokes that no one understands, not sticking up for all the idiot CACLL Trumpers.
LOL. WK is in full melt down mode. Question is if it is based on anger or based on the realization that the side he is on is the one instigating actions close to the SS or Red Guard of China and he is in a quandary. My guess it is the former as he doesn't actually care about the free exchange of ideas and supports silencing others (he has actively called for people to be kicked off Reason as an example).
The latter would also require self-awareness.
Fuckin' LOL. Fist posts a non-joke comment maybe once every three months, and here comes White Excrement to scold him like the prissy little bitch he actually is.
Seriously FUCK YOU Red Rocks. You've always been an asshole and your only friends on here are people like JesseSPAZ and Nardz the tard. That's literally it. Have fun with your little mean girls club of CACLLs, everyone thinks you guys are the coolest.
I propose a drinking game, 1 shot for every time TWK busts out "CACLLs".
Drink!
Are you trying to give everyone alcohol poisoning?

"Flagged and reported."
Oh, oh! Triggered and admitting it.
Fuck off and die.
Flagged and reported.
Reported to whom? The FBI? The little flag button does nothing but make the posts disappear to you and you alone when you are logged in. Reason obviously doesn't check or care. They don't even attempt to remove the spam.
They don’t even attempt to remove the spam.
At one time I used to flag the spambots because I thought maybe someone at Reason would remove them and delete their accounts, but when I continued seeing the same spambot screen names making the same inane spam comments I figured out pretty quickly that the flag doesn't actually do anything but make it so you don't see it. It's not that hard to figure out if you have a functioning brain.
You won't be laughing once your account gets taken away.
If mean words got people banned, this board would be a ghost town.
I do love how you've gone full Censor Police now. All those authoritarian desires finally bubbled to the surface!
That was a pretty sad overreaction on his part. No wonder people think he's ENB's sock.
I never got that. ENB is happy to come in and be a cunt in full public view.
There's the authoritarianism and the antichampion of open discourse. Let it flow.
"You won’t be laughing once your account gets taken away."
If Reason starts banning folks because of TDS-addled shits like you, VOX is gonna have some competition.
And Sqrsly appears. Hi Sarcasmic.
"...You’ve always been an asshole..."
Nope; I disagree with RR often, but the assholish crown is worn by you, you pathetic piece of TDS-addled shit.

Also that was sarcasm incase your tiny brain couldn't tell. Everyone doesn't think you're the coolest.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
It's fucking hilarious that you actually think I give a crap how "popular" I might be on a random internet board. Stop projecting your middle-school level emotional development on to others, goofy.
FWIW Red, I think you're way better than The White Knutjob. 🙂
shush mean girl. WK is hurt. Can't you see that?!?
He just has a lot of feelings...
I'd fuck you.
Yeap, definitely sarcasmic/chipper. Defending calling idiotic statements as sarcasm after everyone point out how stupid he/she is.
Only illiterate unfunny people didn't understand fist... Ahhh that's your problem
I remember when your thing was all about making lame jokes...
Hey. I can be multidimensional.
Fist>>>>>>>>>>You
Probably yeah. Take away a huge medium and people might step outside their echo chamber of idiocy.
Hell, a lot of people here could use that. But instead they just say people have TDS and continue to delude themselves into thinking Trump is somehow good for the country or libertarians.
"Hell, a lot of people here could use that. But instead they just say people have TDS and continue to delude themselves into thinking Trump is somehow good for the country or libertarians."
And here's what TDS-addled lefty shits 'think'.
Except the primary moderating tool on Facebook is family.
I've had family members go a bit wild on both extremes. A bit of discussion and I got both to back down. One is still wildly liberal, but no longer thinks there's a crazy fascist conspiracy by Trump. The other is wildly conservative, but no longer thinks there's a crazy fascist conspiracy by Biden to sell us all to China. (The extremes are actually very similar).
However, without public discussion with people that they know outside of political situations, it's very easy for bubbles to develop. Mold doesn't stop growing when you put it under a rug. It grows exponentially.
Trump certainly hasn't been good for the National Socialist country you pretend to live in.
The #BidenBoom continues to pay off for Reason.com's benefactor.
Charles Koch earned $154,000,000 yesterday.
He's already up over $1 billion this year. Whereas he lost over $5 billion in 2020 because of Drumpf's high-tariff / low-immigration policies.

"Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, passed in the aftermath of the Civil War, bars Trump from holding another federal office if he is found to have “engaged in insurrection or rebellion against” the Constitution of the United States.
The finding could be accomplished by a simple majority vote of both houses, in contrast to the requirement in impeachment proceedings that the Senate vote to convict by a two-thirds majority. Congress would simply need to declare that Trump engaged in an act of “insurrection or rebellion” by encouraging the attack on the Capitol. Under the 14th Amendment, Trump could run for the White House again only if he were able to persuade a future Congress to, “by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/01/11/impeachment-wont-keep-trump-running-again-heres-better-way/
Sure Lard of Strudel. Keep jerking off to your fantasies.
Insurrection or rebellion doesn't include a speech where he told his supporters to peacefully march on the capitol no matter how badly you want to use laws in a manner that would make banana republics jealous.
Whatever, personally I hope he never leaves and lives forever. Dude is poison. Enjoy!
LOL. "Whatever".
"Whatever,..."
Get back to us the year they let you out of the 6th grade, lefty shit.
It's fun watching the Democrats try their hardest to do the GOP a huge favor.
Do they want to make Trump a martyr? Because this is a pretty good way to do it.
Trump would be the heavy favorite in the 2024 primary but would get manhandled in the general election (the events of the past week+ have cost him all of his soft supporters).
Taking him off the chessboard while inflaming his base is Mitch McConnell's wet dream.
My thoughts exactly.
Maybe his diehards would find another outsider to rally behind in the primaries, but they're going to vote against Democrats in the General Election.
The alternative is a long drawn out primary in which Trump would be nastier than the last time around. He'd definitely have a fighting chance.
I come from pretty conservative, evangelical circles. Almost all of the people I know are reluctant supporters of him, and would've preferred someone like Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio.
I don't know how things have changed recently. However, two months ago, I think that a moderate, free-market, anti-war, and thoroughly boring conservative would probably sweep the polls.
The totalitarian left loves it that you still pretend elections are legitimate.
Useful idiots everywhere.
Didn't you hear? Cruz is literally Goebbels.
Now I'm trying to picture Goebbels with a beard, and failing. Thanks.
Congress would simply need to declare that Trump engaged in an act of “insurrection or rebellion” by encouraging the attack on the Capitol. Under the 14th Amendment,
That is, of course, not what happened. Nor was the mob invasion of the capital an act of rebellion or insurrection. There was never a chance, ever, that these people were somehow going to take over the federal government. Nor were they even trying. This is all political theater.
^THIS
I do admire the different ways the democrats are trying to make this a reality. They are doing an admirable job of showing out where all the weaknesses in the Constitution are when a society no longer shares the base assumptions with the founders that are needed to keep the whole apparatus working.
Wasn't there some German scientist or something who, when studying the Constitution for a citizenship exam, found about 20 different ways one could execute a legal coup? Maybe that's entirely apocryphal.
A simple majority vote of congress finding he engaged in an 'act of insurrection or rebellion' would likely result in a long court battle about what, exactly, it means to 'be found to have engaged in.' Congress is not a judicial conviction and the amendment provides no actual standard for what constitutes even an indictment of it, let alone a conviction of it. Even those who passed that amendment thought that provision was stupid and dangerous less than 4 years later.
More dangerous is the calls to remove elected representatives under this provision. The majority negating the will of the people because they elected 'yucky' people is something out of a third world dictatorship.
Follow up to say that I'm not sure even a vote of congress/senate would qualify to actually bar him from office unless the administration follows it up by prosecuting him under an identifiable federal statute, which (in a non batshit crazy world) he should win easily under the Brandenburg defense.
Haha. Libs are soooo worried about ‘murica all of a sudden. Too funny.

Free speech? Because some nobody made a completely racist and harmful joke? Yes, he's technically allowed to make a joke like that, but it doesn't make it any less harmful or offensive. We have a flag button for a reason, you know.
When you're done fanning your face, you can get back to pretending how principled you are.
I find everything you say to be offensive does that mean you should be banned from talking?
What have I ever said that was offensive? Name one thing.
I'll wait.

But in generally, your ignorance is offensive to open and intelligent discourse.

Name one post which wasn't, shitstain.

Yes, you hate open discourse. You want to censor everyone you disagree with. We get it. Stop telling us. We understand.
Because some nobody made a completely racist and harmful joke?
The joke wasn't racist in my opinion, and certainly wasn't harmful. As someone who thinks you get an undeserved amount of shit from other people on this board, you've been sounding unhinged for about a week now. Maybe step away for a week or two.

Twitter stock is down and Signal downloads are increasing; god I love the free market. That's not to say the Big Tech giants will go softly into the night but their power is directly tied to their users.
Let me ask you: how much do you really care? Is it the fact that you want Parler to succeed or just Twitter to fail because there are liberals that use it? Do you even have an account on Parler or is it really all about owning the libs?
White Excrement thinks you have to use a social media account in order to support not having them shut down. Suddenly the MUH PRINCPLZ crowd isn't so principled.
No, I’m merely pointing out the innate hypocrisy in Great Notion's post. I’m allowed to do that, you know.
You're not pointing out anything other than what a prissy little bitch you are.
That's it, stop stalking me and leave me alone. You and all the other psychotic CACLLs that have infested this place are actually starting to get on my nerves. I am okay with having an open and honest intellectual debate/discussion but this has gone too far. Stop the name-calling and try debating on the merits for once in your life. If that's even possible for a CACLL. I am okay with calling a truce right now if you agree we can speak to one another like full grown adults. Deal?
"I am okay with having an open and honest intellectual debate"
Cite?
Cite?
Every conversation I've ever had on here?
OK, now THIS is funny.
How?
I guess if being honest is funny to you, you can consider me the Jeff Dunham of Reason.
"Fuck you traitor"
"I guess if being honest is funny to you, you can consider me the Jeff Dunham of Reason."
If a TDS-infected pile of shit like you had any concept of 'honesty', it would amuse and amaze.
You show up, propagandize, get laughed at and now you're all butt-hurt since no one here joined you in your screaming match regarding what scared some congress shits.
Fuck off and die.
You and all the other psychotic CACLLs
STOP THE NAME CALLING! LOL!
You shrieked about trying to get me banned, and now you're asking to call some kind of a truce? On an internet board that has banned only three people--Hihn, Buttplug, and Mary Stack--in the 10 years I've been commenting here?
No one is "stalking" you, you pretentious twat. You were more than happy to make your passive-aggressive digs and comments at everyone else over the last few months. The truth is that you're having a nervous breakdown and can't handle the very thing you've been dishing out this whole time.
Seriously, what is wrong with you? I’m trying to call a truce with you, make up and start over. Can we agree to start over and behave like gentlemen again?
You do this whenever your BS is pointed out to everyone and you have an acute moment of realization what a PoS you are. You tried this with me once. LOL.
You had your chance.
"You had your chance."
Oh, NO!!!!!
Fuck off and die.
"Seriously, what is wrong with you?"
Easy to see what's wrong with you: Getting called on your constant bullshit.
"Fuck you traitor"
No fan of Neil young (much less Jeff Dunham) deserves any respect at all.
What's even funnier is that people slagging one another on this board goes back YEARS. The old commenters used to call it "Thunderdome" because of how often people would dunk on each other.
Mary got banned for creating multiple sock puppet accounts, including the White Indian one that shat up multiple threads.
Hihn got banned for his relentless copypasta, and even then, they let him back on, even though he used multiple sockpuppets as well.
Shreik got banned for posting kiddie porn links.
That's it, to the best of my knowledge.
All the Woodchipper-named accounts (including CMW, who's on your side) were started up in direct response to a government official trying to prosecute individuals over saying a corrupt judge should have been thrown in to one.
NO ONE has ever been banned for using harsh language, and Reason even went to court over it because Preet got a bug up his ass about one of his authoritarian colleagues being criticized. If you can't handle that now, despite that being common here for years, then you should probably try a board that won't offend your delicate sensibilities.
So can we agree to be friends or not?
I'm not friends with ANYBODY on this board. A friend is someone I invite to my house for dinner. That I hang out with to watch sports or catch a movie. That I've known personally for years.
They're not people I engage with on the internet.
Okay, I understand, it's like a semantic game with you. Like, we're not technically 'friends', but in actuality we could become friends.
I’m just trying to apologize for my behavior towards you. I made some mistakes and I’m trying to make up for them. I don't think you're a bad guy, just extremely misguided at times. I think in real life we would actually get along really well, I could see us getting a pizza and a pint together, and then catching a flick.
"Fuck you traitor"
So you're saying Red Rocks is correct.
"That’s it, stop stalking me"
It's an open discussion board.
Hypocrisy? What hypocrisy? Twitter stock is down because they have bad service and people are free to leave which is where Twitter's power arises from. Signal is increasing marketshare because they provide a service people want. A Free market. Government didn't need to take action, the people have. I applaud that, right or wrong, for better or worse. People are "voting" on the products they want.
Which will last right up until Signal can no longer purchase server space, get payments processed, and is declared a potentially harmful program on all Apple and Android phones. Seriously. We just saw what happened with Parlor.
Big tech fired their broadsides a day or two ago. Now it's BigBux's (finance and payment systems) turn.
You will be brought to heel. Or else.
Ahhh, chipper is trying to project his desire to shut down opponents onto SaGN. Sad.
Ahhhh Jesse thinking he's so smart, cool and funny as usual. Sad. Get off of this website, stop stalking me and leave me alone, creep.
LOL. Censorship is so strong in you chipper. One would imply it is one of your core tenets.
Boom flagged and reported because I find you offensive
You better not have. Not that I really care, because I pride myself on being mature and unoffensive.
LOL. You believe this?
"...because I pride myself on being mature and unoffensive."
Got to be a parody account.
If you're referring to me losing control briefly over the weekend, then I apologize for that. I shouldn't have used some of the words I used and I am sorry. That being so, it's the only time I've ever sworn on this site, which I pride myself on. Of course Sevo would think being mature somehow makes someone a parody. Really shows where his head is at.
"Fuck you traitor"
I'd doesn't matter how you precieve your self it matters how I precieve you, and I find you extreammly offensive
I didn't have a Parler account until they started shutting them down because i support those who are being suppressed by Government and their big tech lap dogs
1) Don't really care personally since I don't use any of these shitty services - social media in general.
2) Just don't want to see big government solidify current Big Tech, keeping the next wave from ever materializing.
3) Watching a company implode over politics is pretty funny but more importantly instructive to others that may have followed suit. Not everything is political nor should it be; make your widgets and go home.
It's about the libs not owning all the mainstream media outlets.
Actually it's not even focused on the party itself; It's the censorship and authoritarian nature.... As is UNDENIABLE.
But Signal is owned by Twitter.
Signal is open sourced and not owned by Twitter. There are better block chain alternatives. Just because Dorsey endorsed doesn't mean it is owned by Twitter.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_(software)
It isn't a free market when the market colludes to still take down Parler. It wasn't just Apple, Google, Amazon that colluded either, Parler was blocked from joining virtually every other webhost server that could support them. It is open collusion in Silicon Valley.
it happened fast enough to be collusion which is racketering and falls under the RICO act. Big tech is no longer our friends
True, why I said they won't go softly into the night. But you put government regs. in that will written by current Big Tech and you'll never get rid of them (least not as quick as losing customers) and their customer service will not improve.
I can't wait to see Amazon defend their actions in court. This maybe the perfect case for you, Jesse, you should be happy at least excited.
Collusion between companies who don't want a nazi-like platform on their shit?
Take a hint- if you're shit is so terrible then maybe it's just terrible.
If there was a market for it, someone would host it. But turns out that no one likes you nazi fucks.
"...nazi-like.."
Given you're a fucking lefty ignoramus, I'm quite certain you have no evidence to back your bullshit.
Those nazis from #walkaway were the worst...How dare they!
So, free speech = nazi-like? And censoring is totes okay right? Banning books, totes okay as long as it's icky non-liberal stuff right?
Kicking these folks off Facebook, Twitter, etc. and having them go to encrypted sites is an own-goal. They have previously been easy to track (should the FBI be on the ball), but now will be able to completely hide their activities and plans from the law.
Good job saving these goons from themselves. (remember that most went into the Capitol without masks - not virus masks but masks that hide their identity, like antifa does)
I would encourage like-minded Readership to start re-reading articles from Soviet Jews who escaped communism. Specifically, how do you communicate with like-minded individuals when you don't have the internet, or are under constant surveillance/threat.
There is still time to stop the descent into civil war.
Not if you want to avoid leftist totalitarianism.
It's interesting to note that MeWe and, now, Rumble, downloads are spiking on the Google Play store right now--both of which appear to be a result of the social media purge of conservative voices.
I maintain that the ultimate destination for these people will probably be Mastodon.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_(software)
They killed Parler by depriving it of downloads from their app stores and depriving it of a host. Not sure what to do about big tech using their app stores to discourage distribution of the app on phones, but Mastodon may be an answer to the issue of a host.
As the government and big tech keeps playing whac-a-mole with whatever service starts hosting conservatives and their opinions, people should eventually gravitate to a server independent platform--and isn't that Mastodon?
If someone who knows more about this than I do wants to explain why my reasoning is off or on here, that'd be great. If some enterprising individual wanted to set up an instance on Mastodon, that'd be awesome, too.
When these people were on Twitter, at least you knew who they were or it was trivial to find out. If you're worried about people plotting violent criminal activity, you want them to do it somewhere like Twitter since it's relatively easy to ID people and track them down.
The Twitter ban is going to drive these people to platforms where it is much, much harder to get a real world ID on someone. If you were worried about their plotting before, wait until they get a sense of total anonymity and some confidence that they won't get caught.
Kicking these folks off Facebook, Twitter, etc. and having them go to encrypted sites is an own-goal.
Way to go Donkey-lovers.
lol... The party of jack*sses.... It's amazing how things in the left-party have remained faithful for over a century. Still the party of slavery too by every speech about stealing everyone's money for their utopian labor camp of equal outcome.
Mastedon gets around app bans since it has a web interface. If you allow wrongthink, you will still need to deal with host bans, payment bans, and the like.
The Amazon thing had to be more of an annoyance than anything else. There's a zillion cloud service providers in the market, after all. The app store collusion seems to be an open invitation for antitrust action.
Google's app store policy is cited by the antitrust case against them.
They must have been told to do that in the face of the antitrust cases against their app store. It's exactly the opposite of what they should want to do--unless someone in the government told them to do it or made it clear they wanted it done.
I'm not sure you understand how much you give away when you equate Parler to conservatives. You know, parler, where they openly have nazis calling to hang people, incite sedition, etc.
"...You know, parler, where they openly have nazis calling to hang people, incite sedition, etc..."
Yep, to fucking lefty ignoramuses, banning such speech magically makes it go away!
You can’t just ban speech, you have to burn the books too!
No kidding they suould call to have them guillotine, you know like what the left posts on Facebook and Twitter
And you associate yourself with Reason even though Larkenson(?) will arrive at some point to spout his Nazi white genocide bullshit.
"WeChat—an app immensely popular in China and among Chinese immigrants elsewhere—is also suffering from a host of issues, including alleged shadowbanning on behalf of Chinese state forces and a simultaneous attempt by the Trump administration to ban it from the U.S."
Emperor Pooh-Bear and Der TrumpfenFuhrer BOTH want to get down yer pants and mind yer business... But Emperor Pooh-Bear wants to do it for BAD reasons, and Der TrumpfenFuhrer does it, only because He Loves Us SOOOOOOO Much!!!!
I'm just here to see what word-cheese the squirrel vomits out today.
Thanks to Government Almighty and Section 230, we still have the freedom to do so!
(PS, Blessed are the cheese-makers!)
You're as cute as the people who misunderstood Net Neutrality as well.
Hi sarcasmic (Jeff Jr)
Not sarcasmic. I am a one-sock horse pony.
look closely he wasn't talking to you
Look closer. The trail leads to my response to the squirrel. Like yours leads to my comment. Seems like he was.
No YOU look closer. It leads to SQRLSY. Look all around the fucking board dumbass.
JFC....
No, it doesn't. The line is there to highlight the indent, which is the same for your post and the one you mistakenly think is Jesse responding to you.
The threading sucks but you're wrong.
Okay, got it. Yes, the threading sucks. 'Seems like' was my response. Hardly warrants a dumbass comment cuz the formatting is shitty. But thanks. I do look around the board and the long threads are difficult to track and to make matters worse if you hang out too long your post gets attributed to someone else's post. Good stuff.
Thanks, King S, for explaining in plain language instead of 'I probably had to learn the same shit when I first joined too but JFC' outrage.
Sheldon Adelson is dead, and good riddance I say. He represented all the absolute worst aspects of the republicans, and was the single person most responsible for making it such a royal pain in the ass for Americans to conduct business with online poker sites.
He’s now finding out that you can’t take all your dirty l, corrupt money with you.
Yeah, Adelson passing is no loss whatsoever. He was the private sector version of McCain or Bush, someone who didn't give a shit about anything other than wars and tax cuts.
The old Reagan coalition is now truly dead.
Now do Soros.
+100000
Fuck that guy and everything he's ever stood for.
On the other hand, Black Friday led me to bitcoin so I could keep playing poker, so a sarcastic THANKS ADELSON for that.
His is one grave I plan to make a pilgrimage to shit on
Examples of Soft Fascism as Silicon Valley floods into Biden's cabinet.
https://justthenews.com/politics-policy/elections/obama-era-officials-ties-big-tech-are-joining-biden-admin-droves
Parler files lawsuit due to AWS contract violations. Also brings up antritrust actions as Twitter is a big client of AWS and a competitor to Parler.
https://justthenews.com/nation/technology/parler-files-lawsuit-against-amazon-requests-court-reinstate-platform
Jesus. Ok, sue them, but find another web host. Never use Amazon again. wtf?
They tried, the rest of the major servers that could support them also declined their business due to collusion with Big Tech. They are basically forced to go the Gab route and build their own servers which takes time. That is why they seek immediate injunctive relief.
ARFCOM was removed from Silicon Valley in a bout of confusion for no apparent reason. No examples of any violations they had for removal.
https://thefederalist.com/2021/01/12/the-biggest-gun-forum-on-the-planet-was-just-kicked-off-the-internet-without-explanation/
This is on top of Biden just 2 days ago promising to go after guns and dismantle the NRA. A president threatening to dismantle a citizen group..
The bogeyman of Right-wing authoritarianism is used to justify the establishment of actual Left-wing authoritarianism.
Its the Reichstag fire. The comparison is incredibly apt.
great insight!!
If you go there, their ownership/management (a chunk of their site was sold to Brownell's, an outdoor sports retailer, about six months ago) seems to think that if they're polite, and confine the more inflammatory content from the members behind a paywall, they won't be further screwed with.
Which is silly. They helped considerably in organizing the 2020 Virginia Lobby Day Protests. Which included getting 20,000 plus armed people together and peacefully marching to the state Capitol in Richmond, where they lobbied their representatives. Typical Tea Party type of protest, except for the plate carriers, AR-15s, and magazines.
Any group that can put that together will be hounded to the ends of the Earth by this new Administration and its accomplices.
Have you seen that they're following up their Reichstag Fire with a The Doctor's Plot?
*Someone* is saying armed protests at every state capital are organized and you should totes join in. Odd though, in that the nominal appeal to patriots is accompanied by a red statue of liberty adorned by yellow stars.
Leftists really can't meme.
But don't worry, the FBI already has news updates warning about it...
Here you go:
https://twitter.com/EWErickson/status/1348795165880803328?s=19
Totes patriot style, not at all communist...
I guess this is how the Left will solve the question of how they were going to keep their cities lit at night after re-entering the Paris Accords...
Those FBI posts could be spotted from the ISS. Or from that mannequin Musk sent to Mars.
Apparently labeling your presidency as one of unification doesn't work when your DoJ, friendly DAs, and House all want to criminalize the free speech of others.
https://thefederalist.com/2021/01/12/biden-doesnt-understand-why-74-million-americans-have-no-interest-in-his-unity-facade/
Some of the actions currently being considered:
Increase of all charges of nearly 90 people arrested at the Capitol to felony murder
Cori Bush is seeking to expel any House/Senate member who even questioned the election (Pelosi has endorsed in interviews)
Sedition against a President who never even came close to what an actual incitement requires by law
D.C. D.A. threatening to arrest officials after they leave office on above sedition charges
Impeachment including the impeachment of a private citizen if delayed past Jan 20th (Constitutional question)
Databases installed to track and target political enemies in the private sector
Up next: book burning.
Then witch burning?
You don't understand. The benevolent dear leader Biden wants to unify the country, but evil seditionist Trump supporters won't let him.
You say that as if it is sarcasm. I have actually seen that argument made legitimately.
Let the heeling, I mean healing, begin...
Fuck traitors- the lot of them. And fuck you too for defending them.
They deserve every fucking thing that can stick.
Unity is useless without justice- and these people need to be brought to it.
Fucking lefty ignoramus calling people "traitors"; what a riot!
Hint: words have definitions, and you're too stupid to know that.
"and you’re too stupid to know that" -- I think they are.. It's like watching chicken-pecking. No rhyme or reason at all. It's all about [WE] mob POWER in its most primitive state.
LOL. When you leftists take your masks off you really expose the corrupt authoritarians you are.
Here's Pelosi, actually looking to squash dissent of political rivals. She has plenty of people on here side.
There's absolutely nothing good about that. You can't think that the current/future administration should be able to do that.
Just like getting rid of the fillibuster for judges, this action will come back to bite them in the butt when the worm turns, as it always does.
Totalitarianism doesn't allow worm turning
Fuck off WK
You do a fine job illustrating his points.
Good thing there were men with guns ready to defend those lawmakers from getting covid. They will be sure to pass new laws against gun ownership (except for their security) and putting masks over your guns to prevent accidental misfires.
And any good gun exposed to a bad gun has to quarantine for 14 days.
Gun safes are the new nursing home.
I like when they reveal who we have been saying they are for years.
Wrong spot.
and Parler is temporarily down after Amazon canceled its web hosting account for allegedly not cracking down on this sort of content enough.
Just going to ignore the lawsuit about the 30 day termination clause in the AWS contracts? The fact there was apparent collusion between AWS and multiple other vendors for web hosting forcing Parler to probably implement their own servers?
QAnon, Bugaloo... WTF? Has reason never heard of Antifa, BLM, and other leftist organizations who dox constantly? Why are they only highlighting small right groups that only become public when the left needs a boogeyman? What has either of those 2 groups done that compares to 30 dead, 2 Billion in damage and 200 riots we saw last year?
Never happened. Political violence started on 6 Jan, and anything else is a debunked conspiracy theory that may be dangerous enough to have you deplatformed or worse.
Snowflake is sad that their terrorists are finally getting a longer look (especially since the right has it in spades compared to anything on the left.)
Fucking lefty ignoramus lying but once more.
Fuck off and die.
Right spot:
I like when they reveal who we have been saying they are for years.
Let's see, about two dozen people were killed in the antifa/BLM 'mostly peaceful' riots, to say nothing of the many dozen cops injured, and buildings and cars torched. And so far 5 have died (3 of 'natural causes') since Jan 6. And you think the right is more violent? What planet are you on?
U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D–Wash.) tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, a result she attributes to "being locked down in a secured room at the U.S Capitol where numerous Republican lawmakers recklessly refused to wear masks in the moments after the January 6 attack."
She has also been present at many BLM marches recently....
I have been told certain marches are actually a public health benefit, others are not.
There is now minutes long videos of her on Jan 6th in the Capitol without her mask. LOL.
" . . . QAnon conspiracies less likely to flourish . . . "
Actually, more likely.
I've actually looked for QAnon on the net in the past never could find them and they only appeared in media after the left needed to get people to look away from antifa/BLM that they claimed didn't exist.
Squirrel
People on the right don't talk about QAnon. People on the left do.
The country “averaged more than 3,000 Covid-19 deaths per day”
Or possibly "Averaged more than 3.000 deaths per day, some of which were caused by COVID-19"
But the important thing is, all the government mandates are making us safe!
Germany is having to lock down again because the genius public health officials haven't figured out that they're still in the middle of flu season.
The Elections 2020 article above cherry picks the Reuters report for negative information.
The article does not report that SCOTUS let stand a lower court ruling regarding the Dems trying to expand mail-in voting beyond what Texas law permits.
Just curious why none of the Reason staff has even taken the five minutes needed to understand the PA Mail In Ballot fiasco and blow the lid off it.
Reason doesn't even know Pa Law requires envelopes to be kept for 2 years (they weren't) or care that there isn't an audit trail for adjudicated ballots.
This was the most honest and clean election of all time.
The Department of Justice continues to announce disorderly conduct charges against various protesters identified in the Capitol building.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/doj-charges-two-accused-of-carrying-plastic-restraints-into-capitol-during-riot/ar-BB1cDsEG
I keep wondering why it takes so little time to charge people--when they didn't even know these people's identities a few days ago--compared to the guy who shot Ashlii Babbit--who is known to them and on leave.
Far as I can tell, there hasn't been a peep about charges in that case, but I haven't seen such an obvious case caught on video since Rodney King was beaten by the LAPD.
What is the identity of the shooter?
He's a Capitol cop who was put on administrative leave following the shooting.
I don't know that his name has been released, but if he's a cop who was put on administrative the day of the shooting, they know who he is.
Are you actually an Antifa super spy double agent? You wanted to bankrupt the states and defund police and now this. Carry on solider!
Great, you're trying to summon your buddy Stolen Valor.
^Totally unhinged.
Nope.
Ken made a wonderful point several days ago:
You're crediting lefty shits like this with the *ability* to know fact from fantasy. It's not true.
They're not 'lying'; they haven't the mental equipment to understand the difference; abysmal stupidity will suffice.
I have no idea what you're talking about.
Are you trying to to suggest that wanting to see someone charged for killing an unarmed protester is something only anti-fa would do?
If that's what you're trying to say, your head is really fucked up.
I'm suggesting you're insane and dangerous as hell.
As right here.
This is not a lefty shit lying; it's a lefty shit so stupid as to not understand reality from fantasy.
I see now.
+1 - Lord of Straz - seriously dude, seek professional help.
Fuck off, dude. Deciding that certain ideas are too "dangerous" to be uttered does not lead to good places. Go find a safe space and stay there if you are such a pussy.
Black cop shoots white woman, media doesn’t care about racial justice. Doesn’t fit their narrative.
There has been plenty of noise about Babbit. Mostly from the left complaining people are turning the "say her name" to be used in response to her shooting. Drew Brees was even declared a racist for wearing the Say Her Name slogan on his jersey (although he did it in support of BLM over the weekend).
The question is why we haven't heard about whether charges are being considered.
And why haven't the Democrats been arrested for trying to overthrow Trump?
As right here.
This is not a lefty shit lying; it’s a lefty shit so stupid as to not understand reality from fantasy.
Applying the law equally I think falsifying evidence to over throw a president is sedition
If she were a BLM activist, and they killed her as an unarmed protester, we'd know whether charges were being considered already. Hell, we'd probably be talking about whether they overcharged the cop just to please BLM.
unarmed isn't a needed adjective there as shown by last year.
Last year a Wendy's was burned down because a man was killed in the parking lot during a fight with cops.
Maybe (hypothetically), the Capitol should get similar treatment?
I kid... unless?
"Many mainstream social media platforms have been extra jumpy about potential conspiracy theories and misinformation,..."
If those theories are perceived to be on the Right. Left wing conspiracy theories and accusations of election fraud are still acceptable.
Which brings up the question: why is the Right organizing and speaking considered such a terrible threat it justifies suspending the principles of free speech and free association? While the Left puts out conspiracy theories about systemic racism which have resulted in an incredible amount of violence in the past year, and accusations of election fraud from Clinton and Stacey Abrams.
Keep talking like that and your account will be suspended.
Left wing conspiracy theories and accusations of election fraud are still acceptable.
And will get you national awards.
Guilt and grievance pimping are job one for the left. Division and resentment are their goals. They don’t want us to get along.
"The FBI is warning in an internal memo of the possibility of armed protests at all 50 state capitols and in Washington, D.C., ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s Jan. 20 inauguration, a law-enforcement official said.
. . . .
In preparation for future demonstrations, the FBI said in a statement, “Our efforts are focused on identifying, investigating, and disrupting individuals that are inciting violence and engaging in criminal activity. As we do in the normal course of business, we are gathering information to identify any potential threats and are sharing that information with our partners,’’ which include other law enforcement agencies.
The bureau added, “Our focus is not on peaceful protesters, but on those threatening their safety and the safety of other citizens with violence and destruction of property."
https://www.wsj.com/articles/fbi-warns-of-possible-nationwide-armed-protests-ahead-of-biden-inauguration-11610407030
I have so many questions for the FBI. It's hard to know where to start!
1) Is it constitutional for the FBI to contact individuals, beforehand, and warn them not to attend a protest? Are there any other law enforcement agencies taking it upon themselves to behave this way, or is the FBI the only one?
2) In regards to the FBI focusing their efforts to warn away protesters that threaten "violence and the destruction of property", is this policy only directed at supporters of the president or did they do this to BLM and anti-fa activists, too?
3) How do do we know that you're only doing this with the violent protesters and the ones who will damage property? Are you taking Preet Bahara's word for it or something? Are we just supposed to take your word for it?
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
This is how we handle things under the SleepyJoe regime of terror.
Those guys should send the FBI a thank you note for the heads up.
You're not one of these people, here, who are suddenly claiming to be a libertarian, are you?
No, that would be you.
4. Is there really a possibility of armed protest or is teh FBI making this up so that out Pre elect and fearless governors have an excuse to bring in the military.
I'd say #4 is the real reason. the FBI as usual probably found some rube bragging in a bar and they have now enabled him by providing weapons and bombs that the FBI will amazingly capture before he can use them and then say see we did our job and these people are bad and call more security
Armed protest is no cause to bring in the military. 1A and 2A do not have to be exercised independently.
And armed protests, at least in recent history in the US, are probably the most peaceful. You don't want to fuck around when everyone around you is armed.
Yup, the VA 2A rally proved it. 10k+ armed, angry people in one spot and it never turned violent.
The cops managed to stay well behaved too, funny how that works.
This is just laying the foundation for crackdowns and pogroms.
Just installed the Brave browser after using Firefox for a long time - Mozilla has become the enemy and so has the World Wide Web Foundation and Tim Berners-Lee. Fuckers.
Been on Brave for months now. They are really good.
I do need to find a new email address though. Only thing I have left of Google aside from the phone OS.
Agreed about Brave. You can still even mute a tab by just clicking on the audio icon!
The guy who started brave was the guy who started Mozilla. He was kick out of being ceo of Mozilla for supporting prop 8 in California. One of the vps who is a dyke said something to the extent of : he knows I'm gay and has never once brought it up and helped coach me and encouraged me to become vp and I would be vp if it wast for him, I was shocked to find out what a monster he is for supporting prop 8. Clearly the left is the group is punishing wrong think and the people in the left are so fat gone there is no reason to care about them
I'm going to post this in isolation...
https://wtop.com/dc/2021/01/prosecutors-weigh-heavy-hammer-felony-murder-for-rioters-in-capitol-officers-death/
Yes... they are threatening Felony Murder on all of the people arrested on Jan 6th. This is insane.
SleepyJoe wants them executed.
History rhyming on the violation of norms?
"The Senate listened and were about to agree with Caesar when Marcus Porcius Cato, known as Cato the Younger, rose to speak. He was no friend of Caesar and a member of the optimates, a strong, conservative contingency within the Senate. In a rousing and impatient speech, he agreed with Cicero - execution was the only choice. The Senate concurred and the men were to be executed without a trial. Although a trial was customary and dictated by law, Cicero used his emergency powers to support the decision and forgo a trial. Each of the five men was taken to the Tullianum, an ancient building in the Forum that had once served as a well-house. They were forced into a small, dingy and smelly room where they were strangled with a noose by an executioner. Speaking to the crowd outside, Cicero, now being hailed as pater patriae meaning “father of the fatherland,” exclaimed Vixere! or “They have lived!” The praise was, however, short-lived. Many people began to question his blatant use of executive powers, a decision that clearly violated a person’s right to a fair trial."
Traitors get shot or charged. Fuck em.
Fuck off and die, asshole.
Watch out, WK will flag you. Oh nm, he agrees with your sentiment.
That IS WK.
Traitors to what?
He has no idea what the word means; that's 7th-grade level, and he's got a couple of more 6th-grade years to go.
I wasn't expecting much, but we need to call people on their BS. Words have meaning.
In the car this morning, I listened to NPR for a while. They referred to the 'seditious riot' on Wednesday, which was not unexpected.
But when discussing the impeachment of Donald Trump, they called him an 'enemy of democracy'.
Really?! He's not only an enemy of the United States, and civil discourse, and basic human decency, but now he's an enemy of the concept of democracy? How exactly did he get that label?
How could anybody really deserve that label?
They're not traitors. They're useful idiots. Just like the rest of the unfortunates who've bought Trump's lies.

“…We often think Tony, Shrike, and ChemJeff are being dishonest–especially when they don’t seem to learn anything from having their arguments shredded and smeared in their faces everyday for years. But the fact that they don’t seem to learn anything–knowledge wise or in terms of critical thinking–may be consistent with the hypothesis that they’re just not that bright. And we shouldn’t necessarily assume that Binion, Boehm, or Britschgi are fundamentally different from them.
Maybe the reason they try to make us feel is because they’re incapable of making us think. It is beyond their capabilities…”
I honestly think that with the exception of Sarc/Sqrls, the rest are just like Binion, Boehm, or Britschgi, paid to lie and regurgitate the narrative.
It's no secret that Media Matters has fifty-centers working seven to ten forums and comment sections apiece, whose job it is to create the impression of a progressive consensus. And if that can't be achieved, to troll and shitpost dissenting threads to oblivion.
That's why, even after their arguments are destroyed and they've slunk away, they're back to repeating the exact same nonsense in the next thread like nothing happened.
"Traitors get shot or charged. Fuck em."
Hey
raspberrydinnersJeff,In May your protesters attacked federal buildings in DC and lit 200 fires.
In June Black Lives Matters protesters stormed the White House and tried to set up a “Black House Autonomous Zone”
https://wjla.com/news/local/black-house-autonomous-zone-white-house-black-lives-maatter-plaza-photos
In August you guys again rioted and again attacked the White House and another six officers were hospitalized with severe injuries. (link to follow)
You endorsed this shit and it’s actually far worse than what happened on Wednesday during the Reichstag fire.
By your own rhetoric shouldn’t you be shot?

These are global download numbers, so we should be careful assigning a too United States-centric cause for them. "
The rest of the world knows when the U.S. goes down they all fall like dominos.
interesting that Angela Merkle and a former Russian dissident have raised alarms about what the left is doing in America
"And does anyone think the Capitol and U.S. statehouses are now safer, QAnon conspiracies less likely to flourish, or election fraud fever dreams less likely to stir action now that they've been driven to less visible platforms with a smaller chance of pushback from dissenting voices, outside discovery, or platform moderation?"
Sorry millions more can't fit into the rooms for the beltway media elite cocktail parties. They're just going to have to find other ways to be come myopic, delusional, ideologically insolated and talked to like they're children.
So, Democrats, what's the plan? Have the government ban Signal or have your Silicon Valley friends shut it down?
You will need a license to use the internet.
maybe something like a social credit card. heard it works well in China
If Democrats had anything to do with it in the first place....
Guess what you dumbasses- twitter, facebook, etc. are PRIVATE platforms. You have no right to use it if you don't abide by their TOS.
You'd think a LIBERTARIAN site would get that.
Guess what- if they don't want you, they don't have to accept you. Go fuck off to the dark web if you want to get your qanon bullshit.
Libertarians don't agree with censorship. Ever.
Libertarians don't agree with authoritarianism. Ever.
Libertarians don't agree with Market Collusion to harm competitors to a market. Ever.
Libertarians don't agree with allowing industry to have unconscionable contracts such as SV enjoys.
Which fallacy are you employing this time?
Have you looked up what "fallacy" and "strawman" meant yet? Are you going to start using them correctly in sentences now?
That offer of a "Word of the Day" calendar still stands.
Which fallacy is he employing? Educate me, being that you're so well versed in using arguments based upon false premises, arguing against what nobody said, and attacking people instead of what they actually said.
So please, analyze JesseAz's comment and educate us, oh learned Fallacy Man.
None.
HTH
The fallacy of believing the Libertarian platform?
There's a difference between small-l and big-L libertarians. One is a philosophy, the other is a political party.
And neither are you.
None. Oops.
Do you need a primer on fallacies?
Just for the record, libertarian often disagree on these things, and there can be good and honest libertarian arguments on both sides of an issue.
Abortion is a good example of that. Honest and smart libertarians argue that the legitimate purpose of government is protecting people's rights--even from their own mothers--and honest and smart libertarians can argue that even if that's true, using the government to force women to carry a fetus to term against her will is fundamentally oppressive even if what the mother wants to do is unethical.
The people who are arguing for freedom of association and private property here in comments over the last few days are wrong in this case, but they're also doing it disingenuously. These are generally NOT people who believe in freedom of association on private property in other contexts. They do not believe that fundamentalist bakers should be free to discriminate against someone who wants a cake for a gay wedding. They do not believe that racists should be free to refuse service to African-Americans in their restaurant because it's private property. The only reason most of them are citing private property and freedom of association is because they see Google, Apple, and Amazon refusing service to conservatives--and they hate conservatives--so they're trying to rationalize it.
Meanwhile, the things you're saying about collusion and government coercion are absolutely true. The reason this is happening is because there are no more Republicans in the White House or the congress with the power to punish these big tech companies and because the Democrats who control the White House and congress have been threatening to break their companies up if they don't crack down on conservative speech on their platforms. We're seeing this happen because of that, and because Trump is no longer in the White House, and it's silly to pretend that isn't happening.
It should also be said that the collusion and coercion exception to private property and freedom of association isn't the only example of libertarians seeing exceptions to what might be legitimate rights otherwise.
They all fall within the spectrum of the idea that you should be free to do as you please so long as you don't violate anyone's rights. For instance, your right to bear arms does not give you the right to brandish a weapon in someone's face and threaten them with it unless they empty the cash register. Freedom of speech does not give you the right to hand a note to the bank teller saying that you have a bomb, and you'll set it off unless she empties the safe.
When we say that private property and freedom of association doesn't give big tech permission to violate the free speech rights of millions of Americans at the behest of the Democratic party, we're not making any new or unoriginal claims. It's not that private property and freedom of association aren't important. It's that you should be free to do as you please with your property so long as you're aren't willfully violating the rights of other people with it (and, in this case, at the behest of government). That's just like the First and Second Amendment "exceptions" I mentioned above.
There are real libertarians who will make honest and intelligent arguments against what I'm saying here, but the ones you've run into here in comments aren't those people! Libertarianism isn't about who you vote for or a list of beliefs. Libertarianism is about a system of values and a way of thinking--that even libertarians who are diametrically opposed on a particular issue share. The people we've been talking to in comments that are arguing about this from the perspective of private property and freedom of association do not think in that way and do not share those values.
Well put. It can even be said that there are libertarian arguments to be made around limited restrictions on freedom of association to both prevent basic rights to life, liberty and poh from being violated and to ensure a stable and predictable economy - but none of those are being made by those claiming private property and freedom of association absolutism except as has already been legally prohibited.
You think they're "private" or operating in a "free market"? LOL.
"twitter, facebook, etc. are
PRIVATEcorporatist platforms.Fixed that for you.
Remember, when independent corporations work under the direction of a political entity, for that entity's good, it's the dictionary definition of fascist economics.
The House will now vote on impeachment on Wednesday.
And nothing will come of this political theater, as always.
I feel like a deity the way my name is taken in vain. Worship me losers!
Same. Free Rent!
Ahh, finally a found pair of socks.
I'll go to the comments and do a CTRL-F for "sarc" and invariably my name comes up a half a dozen times when I haven't even made a post. These losers are obsessed.
Don't really get why they're so obsessed with you (and me). All I know is that we must be doing something right.
They want to cancel all actual libertarians. I'm not sure why.
If by "actual libertarians", you mean regulation-pushing, free-speech-eschewing, radical progressives like White Knight, then lol.
Which fallacy are you employing now? Or is it a strawman? I can never tell these days.

Sockpuppet or obsessed?
Gosh, you're a deity. I'm just a lowly sock puppet. Sigh.

Apparently, Josh Hawley believes he's the victim of the Capitol Terrorist Attacks.

Simon & Schuster saw what happened and canceled Hawley’s forthcoming book about the tyranny of big tech companies.
...
“I think it shows we are in a period where the First Amendment values and principles of freedom of speech and also freedom of worship, freedom of religion, that these things are really under attack by some quarters, by many quarters,” he said.
Well, is he wrong?

Millions of Users Are Flooding Encrypted Apps After Social Media Purges
Oh, nothing to see here. Move along.
What happened was not Big Tech having it out for Hawley. What happened is that a bunch of fringers were openly planning insurrection on Parler (and Facebook and other sites). And then the president sent them dog whistles to attack. (I will give the president the benefit of the doubt and say he didn't know he was dog whistling). And people in power knew this was going to happen and did nothing to counter it. The perfect storm of screwups in a year full of perfect storms of screwups.
And Hawley supported everything right up to the point of the riot. Hawley was one of those pouring gasoline on the kindling. He deserves ever book canceling he gets. It's not a violation of his free speech, as he's perfectly within his rights to self publish. What whingy cunt.
S&S coming to the same conclusion as Big Tech is just an example of the problem that Hawley references in his water-treading interview.
Whether or not he earned his banishment (and I'm inclined to think he did) is a separate issue. But legal protection for free speech means fuck all if cultural support (especially elite cultural support) doesn't exist for it.
Free speech had the support of the Correct People back when they thought they were stopping a war and opening their minds, maaaaaaaaaaaaaan. It's only ever a principle for these assholes when they think they aren't running things. Their support for it has always been conditional, which means they don't actually support it at all.
Only the people out of power our outside the dominate culture ever truly support the idea that free speech, free press, and freedom of religion should be unrestricted and available to all. That's how we know it's a foundational value.
"were openly planning insurrection on Parler"
No one arrested so far has had a Parler account. Let that sink in for a moment.
What happened is that a bunch of fringers were openly planning insurrection on Parler (and Facebook and other sites). And then the president sent them dog whistles to attack.
If you know what a dog whistle sounds like, that means you're a dog.
And considering that this same type of insurrection was openly planned last summer with the full support of the left, you'll have to understand why I'm not getting worked up about a bunch of LARPers and blue-collar workers making the hoi polloi Congressmen piss their pants and spread COVID.
Oddly enough, I can hear dog whistles. While not common, I don't think it is all that rare either.
That said, all this talk of dog whistles from the left is projection or a desire to justify their misinformed views of their political opponents. I was on Parler for about a week. My experience was that it was a right-wing echo chamber with slightly better quality engagement than twitter (which is still an insult.) I didn't like the layout, so didn't really get into it enough to diversify it by 1 voice.
Glen Greendwald did some actual journalism and found not one person arrested was on Parler.
Whoops. Looks like you were pushing a leftist lie dummy. So ignorant or useful idiot?
I have numerous friends who doe network infrastructure, and the recent reports of the leaked reports from Parler has them shocked. Shocked.
There was like literally no social media grade security in place. Like it was just some guy's webpage. People were finding images of users drivers licenses, front and back, that some Parler users had to submit. Dear god why? Why would anyone trust a site like that?
Because it got into the Right's head that Parler was just like Facebook but for TrumpBros. It wasn't. It was an absolute mess with the barest minimal infrastructure to be online. The comment section of Reason is light years more advanced, and it's just a webpage forum.
"Parler was just like Facebook"
If you would have said "just like Twitter" I may have been more inclined to believe what you just wrote.
Parler didn't have a group function like Facebook, it was essentially a Twitter clone.
Your "numerous friends" are fictional or lying to you.
This is why the accusations that the protesters organized on Parler, by Amazon, Google and Apple are so obviously bullshit. In fact they organized on Facebook, their group accounts are locked but still there, and nobody arrested had a Parler account.
Amazon, Google and Apple know that their accusations are untrue. They know that they are going to be sued and lose. But they don't care. They can afford it.
Crushing alternatives now is far more important.
"I have numerous friends"
cite?
They all live in canada.
Will the Apple Store and Google Play ban other apps including the encryption apps?
Will Apple and Google give the "Almighty Government" the backdoor into your computers and mobile devices that they have been demanding?
How far will the purge of all people go. Will it stop with de-platforming, crushing people economically, what's next?
Should we need be alarmed as libertarians because we don't have Liberal Entitlement and are now a target of Big Tech, and Democrat and Liberal society?
I sure wish that Jo Jorgensen won the election, because the two Major Parties are a real mess with their Statist views.
Yes.
Totally.
As far as they possibly can.
We're already on the gibbet, just waiting for the rope.
JoJo was just another stalking horse.
I've been hyping Signal here for years, and if you're a Linux person, you can get it straight to your desktop, which is great. The desktop will do person to person video calls through your desktop--to a phone or another desktop. Signal is not only about as good as it gets from an encryption standpoint but also really easy to use. You can make it your default for all SMS messages on your phone, too.
Anyway, so longs as Android remains based on the Linux kernel, you should be able to build it yourself straight from the sources on GitHub.
https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Android/wiki/How-to-build-Signal-from-the-sources
Is that something average people will do?
No.
I was hoping to see Parler on F-Droid. I don't know if it was ever available there, but it doesn't seem to be there now. Regardless, as they take down this stuff, just because it isn't as easy as it used to be doesn't necessarily mean that people won't learn to do what's necessary to get it if they want it.
Back in the day, we used to make fun of people for not knowing how to set the time on their VCRs. The reason people didn't know how to do that (and just left it blinking 12:00) was because they weren't using their VCRs to record things. They were using them to watch tapes they rented from Blockbuster.
It used to be that some 70% of the people on the internet thought that AOL's website was the entirety of the internet. As they became aware that there was a hell of a lot more than AOL's website out there, they learned to do the 7 clicks or so that was necessary to find the way through AOL's labyrinth of a website and get to the rest of the internet.
Plenty of people only learn how to fix their cars because their cars are old beaters and they have to fix them themselves or because they like old cars and they can't afford to pay through the nose for one that's in mint condition, so they have to buy a hunk of junk and fix it up themselves. When the difference between being elite or being a loser in Quake III was learning how to overclock your processor and graphics card, people acquired the knowledge.
A lot of mainstream services start out as underground and gray area enthusiast projects for a small enthusiast community. Before iTunes there was Napster, and before Napster there were dozens of FTP download sites. Plex has become mainstream now, but Kodi and its associated plug-ins that let people view illegal streams and content--they started cracking down on that because it started going mainstream. It was a niche underground product when it started.
I expect the same kind of thing with the purge of conservatives from the internet. They'll find ways. It's not convenient, right, or good, but just like with legal marijuana, if there are millions of people out there who want something, don't bet on the government being able to stop them from finding ways to get what they want. The shocking part of the story, here, is the government colluding with big tech to stop conservatives from talking to each other and the world and organizing protests, etc., but the big story in the background is that their efforts are doomed to failure over the long haul.
People will get this stuff--even if the government and big tech makes it harder to do.
If you're still getting your apps from the play store you haven't learned anything.
Will Apple and Google give the “Almighty Government” the backdoor into your computers and mobile devices that they have been demanding?
Google's been working with the CCP to do exactly that, and censor content per CCP guidelines, for years. What makes anyone with sense think they aren't doing the same here?
You’ll never be able to eliminate loons gathering to spread conspiracy theories and plot terror.
You can keep them out of the mainstream public square so they don’t infect your aunt with their bullshit.
There is no whining from anyone when ISIS’s propaganda channels are disrupted, and in this case it’s not even the US government doing it.
If you can't deal with an open public square, then you can't deal with democracy.
If people can't share ideas lest they vote wrong, then why do we let them vote in the first place?
No one has a Lisa KENNEDY Montgomery execution joke, seeing as Kennedy is a libertarian who hosts Reason contributors all the time, and she shares a name with an actual killer?
