After a couple of close losses at the Supreme Court this week, President Donald Trump went on a Twitter tirade demanding "NEW JUSTICES" and joined other conservatives in demanding that the court be even more politicized than it already is.

The recent Supreme Court decisions, not only on DACA, Sanctuary Cities, Census, and others, tell you only one thing, we need NEW JUSTICES of the Supreme Court. If the Radical Left Democrats assume power, your Second Amendment, Right to Life, Secure Borders, and…

This venting followed two major rulings announced this week. On Monday, the Supreme Court held that employers cannot fire workers for being gay or transgender. Trump didn't seem to disagree at first, but later changed his tune. And yesterday, the court upheld the Obama-era Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, which protects some illegal immigrants who entered the country as children from being deported; Trump has tried to scrap it.

But this Twitter rant is more than that. Trump is also outlining what could be a central campaign issue as he heads into re-election. Four years ago, the promise that he would appoint a conservative to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia was one of the main reasons that Trump was able to hold the conservative coalition together despite his obvious shortcomings. It may have been the main reason, to judge from my own conversations with conservatives who were less than enamored with Trump but voted for him anyway.

The stakes were more well-defined in 2016 because there was a vacant seat on the bench. But with the economy in a coronavirus-induced snooze and Trump losing ground in national polls, the president seems eager again to make the Supreme Court a major part of the argument for his re-election.

The idea is re-energize turned-off conservatives: "Vote Trump, or everything you love and value will be gone!"

On the other hand, some conservatives may be less likely to back Trump because Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Trump appointee, authored the majority opinion in the workplace discrimination case. It's not hard to imagine Trump scaring them back into line with the threat of what a Democratic presidency would do to the court. But it is also not necessarily wise for an incumbent to campaign against his own appointees.

Turning every presidential election into a referendum about the future of the federal judiciary—which is supposed to be a mechanism for settling disputes, not a means for owning the libs—seems imprudent, but both major parties have all but abandoned any pretense of seeing the court as neutral or apolitical. Probably the best we could hope for is exactly what the nine justices displayed this week: a willingness to rule with independence from the gale-force political winds constantly whipping around them.


FREE MINDS

A labor council in Seattle that represents 150 unions and more than 100,000 workers voted to expel the Seattle Police Officers Guild. Getting booted from the county-wide labor council means the police union will no longer benefit from typical union solidarity as it heads into its next contract negotiation with the city, The Seattle Times notes. The apparent aim is to weaken police unions' political power, as nationwide protests bring new attention to these unions' role in protecting bad cops.


FREE MARKETS

ELECTION UPDATE

She may be the last person to realize it, but Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D–Minn.) announced that she will not be Joe Biden's running mate:

Klobuchar was reportedly on Biden's shortlist for the veep slot, but her time as a prosecutor in Minneapolis has become a major red flag in recent weeks: She declined to prosecute cops involved in a fatal shooting in 2007, even though she'd garnered a reputation for ramping up prosecutions across the board.

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign is asking for more presidential debates this fall. Three are currently scheduled: September 29 at the University of Notre Dame, October 15 at the University of Michigan, and October 22 at Belmont University.

    Gorsuch is, of course, Trump's greatest accomplishment. While the case in question is likely a net negative for libertarians, I can't believe in 2020 that conservatives are hanging their hats on such a stupid wedge issue when they have much more pressing culture wars to fight.

      By calling it Juneteenth I guess this sets us up for a 3-day weekend when they turn it into a national holiday as long as the chosen day each year lands on a 'teenth'.       In an oped by former FTC technologist Neil Chilson, the pseudo-rightist insists Americans should be grateful to Big Tech, even when being censored, because: “You can thank innovation for The Mandalorian and for the many ways we can stay in touch: Zoom video chats, Snapchat messages and Houseparty games.       This is the result of about 50 years of hippie Maoism in the universities finally going mainstream. Every conservative and libertarian going "oh, it's just a few crazies, everyone else just wants to go finish their degree and get out of there" willfully blinded themselves to the will to power that these freaks have.

      I've for warned several years now that the shit being pushed in the nation's universities was going to eventually come home to roost, because all those psycho prog students being indoctrinated by their psycho prog professors were going to eventually graduate and move up the social ladder to a point where they could actually influence social policy. They're now actively seeking out people to ruin who's only sin was being related to someone that is the current target for Two Minutes Hate. We are about as close to a combination of "1984" and "Brave New World" as I've ever seen.

      This country basically has no hope right now of surviving because the schools, the media, every major corporation, and the nation's power structures are all pushing this bullshit religious cult narrative. They and their acolytes have declared war on you, the only question is how you're going to engage with that declaration.

      My advice? Get completely off social media; let the blue cities burn to the ground; find communities of like-minded individuals and gatekeep the hell out of it to keep McIntosh Disease from spreading its infection--and yes, that will likely necessitate violence, because these maggots have demonstrated that they will not leave you alone until you literally bend the knee. Their entire ideology rests on violating the NAP as a core principle, so your asses better be ready when they come for you.     Here's Senator Whitehouse (D) threatening to increase the number of judges on the Supreme Court and packing it with Democrats under the guise of an amicus brief to the Supreme Court:

    "The Supreme Court is not well. And the people know it. Perhaps the Court can heal itself before the public demands it be “restructured in order to reduce the influence of politics.” Particularly on the urgent issue of gun control, a nation desperately needs it to heal."

    That amicus brief was signed by four other Democrats in the Senate, too.

            The voters are in a bad mood because the economy is bad, and some of them always blame whomever is in charge for that, but does anyone doubt that the economy will be better four months from now than it is today?

            The more confident they get, the more absurd they become. They see themselves on television been portrayed well, and think that makes them popular. It's sort of like the stars of Jersey Shore or Here Comes Honey Boo Boo: Because you're famous and people watch you doesn't mean they want to put you in charge of the government. In fact, they might be laughing at you rather than with you.

                I suppose that is one possibility, although I'm not sure they could do that to the states over their objections.

                In California, however, they have made it so that we can't vote for Republicans in the general election.

                In 2016, we could either vote for Loretta Sanchez (Democrat) or Kamala Harris (Democrat). The Republican didn't make the ballot in the general election.

                I don't believe they could alter the way states choose their representatives without a constitutional amendment, and I don't believe they can get a majority large enough to enact that.

              These "Roosevelts" do not like Trump.

              A significant minority of them voting for Obama twice.

              They also do not like defunding the police, defacing or destroying statutes of Presidents and abolitionists. They also oppose arbitrarily labeling things as racist (Gadsden flag, Betsy Ross flag, OK symbol, Aunt Jemima).

            And of course, ol' Joe will be looking at an article 25 declaration on his way down the steps from the inauguration. A vote for Joe Biden is a vote for whoever the appointed VP pick is. Chosen by the way, based on sex.

    It's not hard to imagine Trump scaring them back into line with the threat of what a Democratic presidency would do to the court. But it is also not necessarily wise for an incumbent to campaign against his own appointees.

    You are giving voters WAY too much credit here. The vast majority can hardly name the members of the supreme court much less which ones were recently appointed by their guy.

    Is it just me, or is putting "a woman of color" (what an obnoxious, condescending term that is) on the ticket likely to hurt Biden at the polls more than help him? Trump will go all in on the tactic of portraying Biden as a declining forward who's not likely to make it through his first term. In light of the events of the past few months, does anyone outside the main urban centers want a Democratic president, let alone a president who's a "woman of color," let alone a president who's an insufferable scold? I can't see that playing well on Main Street.

        They need to motivate their base. They need a majority of the people who will vote in enough states with electoral votes to win. They do not necessarily need to appeal to a majority of eligible voters. Blacks are the biggest demographic group that vote almost exclusively for Democrats. Clinton lost, in part, because fewer blacks were motivated to vote in 2016, than in 2008 and 2012.

    It's funny how all the conservatives come out screaming against Gorsuch on this Civil Rights Act ruling, accusing him of "legislating" from the bench. Now is when Rush Limbaugh tells his listeners how important the proper legal interpretation of original intent is (as if Rush knows anything about this) and how bad all the textualist are because they aren't loyal to their commander in chief in the MAGA hat.

    Actually, strictly speaking Gorsuch is probably right in his opinion, but only in light of the Civil Rights Act by itself. I'm interested in what his opinion regarding the constitutionality of the act itself would be and disappointed he didn't ask that question and strike it down as unconstitutional, which it certainly is.
