Jeffrey Epstein's Death in Manhattan Jail Sets Off Conspiracy Theories, but Police Neglect Seems More Likely
Plus: Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests turn violent as China cracks down, Elizabeth Warren admits taxes are bad for business, and more...

Alleged pedophile and child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein died Saturday of an apparent suicide in a Manhattan jail. News of his death was met almost immediately with wild speculation that he was the victim of a plot meant to stop him from ratting out high-profile friends who might have been implicated in his sex trafficking operation. Yet Epstein's demise is probably the result of jailhouse incompetence rather than conspiracy.
Epstein was arrested last month on charges of trafficking dozens of minors for sex between 2002 and 2005. He'd previously pleaded guilty to soliciting sex with a minor in 2008, but federal prosecutors did not pursue a larger case against Epstein at that time—a decision made by former Trump Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, who had handled the case as a South Florida federal prosecutor in 2008 and who resigned last month after the new charges against Epstein surfaced. After his latest arrest, Epstein was being held at the Manhattan Metropolitan Correctional Center.
Conspiracy theories have run wild in the days since Epstein's death in large part because the 66-year-old financier had long-running friendships with both Bill Clinton and Donald Trump. Partisans on both sides had high hopes that one or the other would be implicated as participants in Epstein's crimes if a trial was held. In the immediate aftermath of Epstein's demise, Twitter lit up with claims that he'd been offed by a Trump goon or Clintonian hit squad—with the president himself helping to promote the latter theory. If you're going to believe something like that, why not go big and assume the once-friendly Trump and Clinton clans worked together?
The reality of Epstein's death is likely to be much more mundane—though likely preventable. Despite earlier reports that Epstein had been on "suicide watch" at the time of his death, officials now say Epstein had been taken off round-the-clock observation more than a week ago. Epstein had been put under suicide watch after a July 23 incident that left him unresponsive in his cell, though it was unclear whether he'd tried to kill himself or been attacked by someone else. Instead, he was left alone in a single jail cell in a part of the prison where guards were supposed to check on prisoners every 30 minutes—something that apparently did not happen early Saturday morning when Epstein killed himself, according to The Washington Post.
The union representing prison guards at the Manhattan facility is already on the defensive, claiming that staffing cuts and forced overtime have left the prison's staff unable to supervise all inmates all the time. Another suspicious detail is the fact that video cameras in the part of the prison where Epstein was housed were inoperable on the night he died.
None of that should be taken as proof of a conspiracy, but the conditions in the prison and the circumstances surrounding Epstein's death demand further investigation. Not because it might implicate Trump or the Clintons, but because if the people running Manhattan's prison are always this bad at their jobs, prisoners far less objectionable than Epstein are at risk of suicide.
Scandalous. I supervised jail suicide investigations at DOJ. Experts will tell you that it's essentially always true that jail inmate suicides are preventable, so when one happens it represents a *major* failure on the part of the jail. https://t.co/U3qRUxI2Vq

Hong Kong protests turn violent; airport shut down. Sunday was the most violent day yet in more than two months of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Police reportedly fired tear gas and rubber bullets directly at protesters in a packed subway station.
https://twitter.com/joshuawongcf/status/1160527258953457665?s=19
On Monday, thousands of protesters again packed the main terminal of Hong Kong's international airport, forcing the cancellation of all flights, and raising fears that police may try to forcefully displace the protests. The airport handles more than 1,100 commercial and cargo flights every day, according to CNN, so the shutdown may cause additional problems with flights throughout Asia.
As the situation in Hong Kong intensifies and China threatens to intervene, it becomes increasingly clear that the U.S. should accept individuals forced to flee the city.
Speaking of immigration. Let's make it clear that if it becomes necessary for them to flee we will accept any Hong Kong protesters. pic.twitter.com/EY35x1nOms

Elizabeth Warren admits that raising taxes will hurt businesses. Now let's see if she will apply that lesson more broadly, or if she assumes it only works on businesses she doesn't like.
Increasing taxes on gun manufacturers will reduce gun and ammunition sales and bring in new federal revenue that we can use for both gun violence prevention and enforcement of existing gun laws. Together, we can hold gun manufacturers accountable.https://t.co/BsL6FMkgh0

News of his death was met almost immediately with wild speculation that he was the victim of a plot meant to stop him from ratting out high-profile friends...
LET'S NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS.
Hello.
The Clintons have to be running out of body bags by now. I know it. I feel it.
Al Gore manufactures them special for the Clintons, out of recycled material.
You missed reason equate bill and trumps relationship with epstein. One had a single flight apparently in 97 and kicked epstein out of his businesses when epstein tried assaulting a young woman, the other went to lolita island a few times and travelled the world with epstein. Totes equivalent.
Too late. Over dinner this past week-end the NPCs were all over Trump was a friend of Epstein and had sex with kids!
When someone mentioned Bill they were all like hand waving screaming Fox News!
Nuts. People are just retarded.
All of the propaganda channels are hitting this hard. CNN, MSNBC, NBC (Today), NPR.... I have not heard any mention of "Lolita Express" and Bill Clinton, beyond "nutty republican conspiracy theorists are saying" and usually followed by "as a deflection from Trump's involvement with Epstein".
The entire thing from our first exposure to Epstein with the Lolita Express and Bill Clinton making several trips to his private island has been conveniently shoved in the memory hole.
Democrats will do anything to protect their kind. Even when they murder and rape children. Democrats have to go.
To be fair to reason's shitty writers, everything about Bill Clinton and Donald Trump are exactly the same. Except that Trump is Hitler and Bill is not for some reason.
Exactly.the.same.
Come on, Reason's writers aren't that bad.
And no Trump and Clinton aren't the same. And the MSM didn't treat them the same either.
What they do have in common is that both were elected without receiving a majority of the vote (both times in Clinton's case).
Bill is Eva Braun.
Remember when Shreek and house progressives would complain about Reason's equating of Obama and W?
Good times
I just knew this was gonna turn into who was friendlier with Epstein, Clinton or Trump. Tribalism is a mental disorder.
If anyone knows mental disorders it is you. What is your actual argument, that all relationships were equal?
Orange man Bad, Jesse, Orange Man Bad.
That is all Chipper needs to know.
My argument is that each side will blame the other with no evidence whatsoever.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/flight-logs-show-bill-clinton-flew-on-sex-offenders-jet-much-more-than-previously-known
Former President Bill Clinton was a much more frequent flyer on a registered sex offender’s infamous jet than previously reported, with flight logs showing the former president taking at least 26 trips aboard the “Lolita Express” — even apparently ditching his Secret Service detail for at least five of the flights, according to records obtained by FoxNews.com.
Clinton’s presence aboard Jeffrey Epstein’s Boeing 727 on 11 occasions has been reported, but flight logs show the number is more than double that, and trips between 2001 and 2003 included extended junkets around the world with Epstein and fellow passengers identified on manifests by their initials or first names, including “Tatiana.” The tricked-out jet earned its Nabakov-inspired nickname because it was reportedly outfitted with a bed where passengers had group sex with young girls.
Go lie somewhere else, you piece of shit. But if you want to keep lying, that is just an excuse for everyone else to talk about your child porn problem and Bill Clinton’s underage sex problem.
So that is no evidence? Really?
You present zero evidence that the Clintons had anything to do with this. That's not evidence, that's motive.
I don't know that Clinton did. I just know Clinton was involved with Epstein and it is very convenient he is dead.
You are right, there is no evidence Clinton was behind this. I never said there was nor did I mean to imply it.
You will never get Chipper MW to admit the same lack of evidence with Trump and Epstein.
Not only did he present no evidence that the Clinton's were not involved, he had the temerity to not even assert they were. You got him good chipper!
Eunuch gonna eunuch
But it may be impossible to exonerate them.
How did you ever succeed in getting a law degree, John?
By making legal arguments that dum-dums like you cannot understand, so you need to pay him to do it for you.
Epstein’s Lawyer Claimed the Alleged Pedophile Helped Devise the Clinton Global Initiative Did any of the Epstein lawyers have their safes broken into?
If I compared you to noted pedo poster palin because you both use the term tribalism. Is it tribalism to say it I'd a bad comparison?
False equations are an actual fallacy dumbfuck.
I lean toward the Clintons more than Trump. But this statement is true. Principals, not principles.
No. The facts are what they are. There is no indication that Trump had anything to do with Epstein's proclivity for underage girls. There is, however, pretty strong circumstantial evidence Clinton did.
The fact that you feel the need to pretend the facts are different than what they are because God forbid you admit that Orange Man Bad isn't guilty of every possible crime, is a pretty good sign you suffer from a mental disorder.
Get help./
"There is no indication that Trump had anything to do with Epstein’s proclivity for underage girls. "
Other than the girl who has testified that she was recruited for Epstein at Mar-a-Lago as a 16-year-old, you bigoted slack-jaw?
She herself has said that she never saw Trump flirt with any of Epstein's girls and never saw Trump with Epstein. She has testified as to exactly who recruited her and exactly how... and it had nothing to do with Trump or any of Trump's people.
She has named a couple of other big names though. Names big enough to invite conspiracy theories. In fact, the same family that is involved with a conspiracy in the death of an ex spouse (Diana) is one of the ones named by her.
So if you wanna spin a conspiracy, there's a good place to start.
Besides, if you want to spin a conspiracy about Trump it has to go either "wrote a big check via a slimy lawyer" or "and then he refused to apologize and even bragged about it".
Its nice that despite bristling against your conditioning over the weekend, you're still exhibiting improved behavior and writing.
I seem to have conditioned those lazy tendencies right out of you. Good dog.
And, y'know, that Epstein apparently tried something similar with a different girl at a later date and Trump kicked him out for it. Almost as if he found the behavior inexcusable or something once he knew about it.
Not just a disorder, but the fundamental core of human behavior:
http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2017/09/can-democracy-survive-tribalism.html
Seeing facts as they are? If only.
Chipper's exactly right here, and the partisan rightists are as deranged as ever.
The partisan left talk exactly the same way. They're all convinced it was a conspiracy to cover for Trump.
All of you -- both sides -- are functional retards without an iota of self-awareness.
His suicide was predicted at the time of his arrest at Teterboro in early July.
The first thing I thought when he was reported dead was that trump might have just been Hillary’s backup plan.
Conspiracy theory tug of war! Alex Jones vs Rachel Maddow
Rachel tugging Alex? Eewwww!
They could tug each other. I’m sure her clit is quite manly and phallic.
How about a simpler conspiracy theory - the jailers didn’t care if Epstein offed himself and purposely looked the other way.
Take a look at the cells, or read the ex prisoners account of the cells. Very few anchor points if any to actually commit suicide with.
The MCC is locked down even tighter than Gitmo. It’s absolutely impossible for anyone in there to commit suicide, unless of course they get a little help from someone, like oh say one of the guards for example.
The BOP/DOJ is actually trying to claim that they don’t do video surveillance inside the cells. This is simply a flat-out lie, and anyone who’s actually stupid enough to believe that will believe anything. Every single inch of that facility is monitored by video 24/7/365.
The next person up on Slick Wilkie and Hildog’s assassination list is Ghislaine Maxwell, his French girlfriend responsible for procuring all the girls. Not surprisingly she has disappeared. She knows she’s dead too if they ever get her.
She is English. But yes, Hillary is deeply saddened by Maxwell's impending suicide.
""The next person up on Slick Wilkie and Hildog’s assassination list is Ghislaine Maxwell""
She's been outing Prince Andrews. Ghislaine death will be by suspicious car accident in a tunnel, not a questionable suicide.
You can commit suicide by drowning in the toilet, hang yourself from any anchor point a feet off the floor, and slice your jugular veins with a shank.
Where there is a will there is a way.
What of reports that he told officials that the first suicide attempt was in fact an attack by another person. Does that change the equation at all?
I'm not saying that Epstein was not murdered.
I'm saying that claims that it was IMPOSSIBLE for Epstein to commit suicide are 100% wrong.
The guards who control the electronic doors could have easily popped Epstein's door and some other inmate's door so Epstein could be strangled or otherwise murdered.
the first suicide attempt was in fact an attack by another person
That was never conclusively determined. Of course, by a weird coincidence, his first cell mate was a former NYPD officer awaiting trial on four murder charges. But they probably just figured Epstein would be extra secure with a boy in blue to keep an eye on him.
No kidding? Wow. This whole thing is just unbelievable.
Regardless of anything else, this whole thing should be investigated as a murder.
They probably didn't care (child molesters are schmoes even among criminals) but I can't buy this scenario. There's a downside because someone will get in trouble due to a prominent prisoner dying because of neglect, and no real upside other than personal satisfaction.
There is going to be hell to pay for this. I agree with you. This wasn't neglect.
I don't know. If one of the guards retires to the Bahamas next week...
It would be hard to bribe those guards. Especially since they all just got new expensive cars, new houses, and bog bank accounts last week.
No way they would risk all that.
Not unless you have a "Jump To Conclusions" mat. If you hang in there long enough, good things can happen.
Too soon?
Whether or not this was a conspiracy remains to be seen. But at a minimum, it’s certainly the biggest fuck up on the part of law enforcement since Lee Harvey Oswald was shot.
I picked a bad weekend to binge watch Billy Bob Thornton in Goliath to not get drawn into conspiracies of the wealthy and powerful.
Season 2 was fucked up.
indeed. in an awesome way.
Two years old, yet fresh as today's headlines:

“LET’S NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS.”
Not without first getting out or ‘Jumps to Conclusions’ game mats.
News of his death did not start the wild speculation that he was the victim of a plot to silence him, that speculation started about 2 seconds after he was arrested. It's a little bit odd to refer to crazy conspiracy theories when approximately the entire country was saying this exact thing was going to happen.
The real tragedy here is that all those high profile friends - eg. Bill Clinton are NOT EXONERATED of the accusations that they engaged in pedophilia during their multiple visits to Epstein's island.
Watch NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio eat a corn dog like a very normal person.
that's still, as far as i know, presidential candidate bill de blasio, to you
He deep throated it.
We need a Presidential Scepter. And part of the inauguration ceremony should be deep throating it.
Yet Epstein's demise is probably the result of jailhouse incompetence rather than conspiracy.
The general lack of accountability in the criminal justice system has been a bug worked into the system years ago by the Clinton cabal which foresaw this very necessity.
This is why we need common sense Clinton control laws.
Obama too. I always feel Obama’s presidency would have been far less awful if I were employed to tame next to him in the Oval Office with a rolled up newspaper. Smacking him across the nose with it when he started to do some stupid progtarded thing.
Yet Epstein’s demise is probably the result of jailhouse incompetence rather than conspiracy.
That's Boehm-movement's conclusion, because he can't figure out a way to blame Trump for the "suicide".
I believe it was worked in at least as far back as Hoover.
The "Space Force" started as a joke, but now key members of Congress say it might become a reality. And it will cost $14 billion in the first year.
sigh, when are we going to get serious about this space force and fund it like we mean it
Those are 14 billion space dollars.
yeah but since the Universe is expanding wouldn't there be rampant spaceflation?
Look, we have currency inflation, because we keep running out of money. Just like the Universe is expanding because it keeps running out of space.
Hyperspace inflation.
No.no.no.
Those are called Buckaroo Bonzai Bucks.
President Donald Trump has a weird—but sort of charming?—pen-pal relationship with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
i wish he would stop doing such meme-able things
At least he doesn't bring out a tray full of mugs of hot tea to hostile reporters, like Boris Johnson. Because that would be downright adorable.
It would be hilarious if he sent out a juice box to Jim Acosta every time Acosta had another tantrum.
Another suspicious detail is the fact that video cameras in the part of the prison where Epstein was housed were inoperable on the night he died.
LET'S NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS.
Riiiight. How convenient.
/Dr. Evil voice.
Church Lady, hardest hit.
Were they operating the night before? The night after?
Actually, the hour before and after - - - - -
Just coincidence, though, nothing to see here.
Yup
“Stepped out for a smoke break”
“You don’t smoke Jonsie”
“I do now”
Cell mate moved out hours before... taken off suicide watch just a few weeks after previous attempt... guards not patrolling his area of the jail.... and no cameras. It is the perfect incompetence.
Several guards show off their new cars next week.
The MSM Propagandists have been showing off their new cars too.
How much did The Turk pay you to set up my father?
*POW*
The other possibility is that Epstein did kill himself, just like Frankie Pentangeli did in GF2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64-PGJpKQZg
US should not export tear gas and rubber bullet to HK Police anymore.
Finally, the true villain is revealed.
Free markets, baby!
I thought we wanted to increase domestic manufacturing?
Increasing taxes on gun manufacturers will reduce gun and ammunition sales...
This cause and effect is unique to firearm sector of the market.
Well, regardless of the product, taxing it will either raise revenue or reduce consumption. Not both as the socialists always claim.
It can do both, if the % decrease in quantity is less than the % increase in price.
This. Elasticity of demand is a thing.
Warren is bad news.
She is only 1/1024 bad though.
I think you got it backwards. She is only 1/1024 good.
But she has high cheek bones and her grandparents assured her the family was good.
You wouldn't be saying that the family gave her assurances and then promptly took them away, would you?
Yes, it is the sad story of her people.
she has high cheek bones
A good ass kicking will do that to you.
She is a two-bit circus five times over.
Only 10 people get this joke, and they're both nerds.
The evil in her good is stronger than the good in her evil.
I forgot to followup.
She is only 1/104 bad but Democrats used the one drop rule, so she's all bad.
What's exceptional about this "we can hold gun manufacturers responsible" nonsense was her " how do you do, fellow kids" beer-drinking a few months ago.
Approximately 2.5 times as many people die from alcohol-related causes as from all firearm deaths. I guess it's not a surprise that Warren doesn't want anyone touching her firewater.
The "Space Force" started as a joke, but now key members of Congress say it might become a reality.
Yeah, a fucking awesome reality. SPACE FORCE.
What is Latin for Fuck Yeah?
"Some evangelical Christians are starting to suspect that the president might not actually be one of them."
Unfortunately that's not true. Drumpf is not only an alt-right white nationalist, he's also a religious extremist who's literally turning this country into The Handmaid's Tale.
So how many broads do I get?
Some evangelical Christians are starting to suspect that the president might not actually be one of them.
Unlike his predecessors.
LET’S NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS.
Hell no; let's do a full gainer with a one and a half twist - - - - -
The New York Police Department is depositing cash seized during bogus drug busts into its (deeply indebted) pension fund.
At least the money is going right back into protecting and serving!
NYPD should not worry.
The government plans on asset forfeiting Epstein's estate and use that to prop up the pension fund.
The guy was indicted and that is good enough to steal property, right?
Didnt want him talking so funds wouldnt go to victims?
No indictment necessary - - - -
New York Post op-ed editor and national conservatism luminary Sohrab Ahmari seems happy to stoke the conspiracy theories surrounding Jeffrey Epstein's death.
Dude makes a point about the bizarre state of journalism today.
The Epstein conspiracy theories need "stoking" about as much as a raging forest fire.
Poor Boehm, thinks this job is going to be a stepping stone to the big time.
Yet Epstein's demise is probably the result of jailhouse incompetence rather than conspiracy.
I'm glad you've got it all figured out before any investigation has been done. You don't even have autopsy results but YOU know what happened? Do you always believe what you're told this easily?
Cops being corrupt and complicit in the murder of someone? Who could believe such a thing? Certainly not Reason. Reason has such a history of trusting and respecting the police.
That's assuming any actual investigation would be done. Too many powerful people were in a position to get screwed if Epstein talked; everyone was expecting him to get suicided in jail and the media to gloss it over afterwards.
Yes. They will hang some low level prison guard out to dry over it and the media will call anyone who questions it a conspiracy theorist.
Exactly. And Reason is happy to play along.
Play along indeed, after a suitable delay to in order to confirm their marching orders.
More likely it will be a guard within reach of full retirement before the 'investigation' is concluded. Procedures weren't followed, but under funding is to blame.
Mistakes were made. A guy who is about to retire anyway as agreed to retire in return for charges of misconduct not being pursued. Nothing to see here.
Kind of like the beginning of ‘LA Confidential’.
Procedures weren’t followed, but under funding is to blame.
I heard somewhere that the guards' union is already going with this line.
If the Guards were not so underpaid, they wouldn't have had to accept that bribe to let Epstein kill himself.
As I understand it, the union line is that the underfunding led to the facility being undermanned and the available guards were working "max overtime".
If that doesn't work, they'll probably go with the Joliet Jake response:
"I ran out of gas! I got a flat tire! I didn’t have change for cab fare! I lost my tux at the cleaners! I locked my keys in the car! An old friend came in from out of town! Someone stole my car! There was an earthquake! A terrible flood! Locusts! IT WASN’T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD!"
Cops being corrupt and complicit in the murder of someone? Who could believe such a thing? Certainly not Reason. Reason has such a history of trusting and respecting the police.
Anyone else: "New Reason expose on police and political corruption!"
Epstein: "Nothing to see here. Move along."
Texas Republicans are getting ready for a good, ol' fashioned ass-kicking in 2020.
Is the long-promised blue wave finally about to wash over the Lone Star State?
Still waiting for the results of that previous massive blue wave I heard so much about. But I look at the news and nothing's changed. Weird.
Like global climate warming change tsunami, the blue wave will scarcely get your feet wet.
I stepped in a purple puddle.
The reality of Epstein's death is likely to be much more mundane
Granted, one should not attribute to malice that which is more likely incompetence.
But if the government can't keep one high-profile prisoner in a secure facility alive, I see no reason to believe that they'll keep the rest of us safe after they disarm us.
The guy was the highest profile prisoner in federal custody not currently in Super Max. I am sorry, there is no "mundane" explanation for this. They left him alone knowing he would commit suicide and wanting it to happen because his trial would have ruined a lot of very important people. There is no other rational explanation for it.
If you think the prison system is above all of this, look no further than Whitey Bulger. Bulger was transferred to a prison known to be run by the Italian mafia and left alone and at the mercy of one of the most violent and notorious mafia bosses who is currently doing life without parole. Bulger embarrassed the FBI and the BOP allowed him to be murdered as revenge. No one cases because Bulger was such a dirtbag. But if they can do it to Bulger, they can do it to anyone.
That and the government wanted to seize his assets as quickly as possible. Epstein had lawyers that likely could have held up those proceedings indefinitely.
I see the government is wanting to proceed with criminal forfeiture even though Epstein is dead and was never conviction of any new charges. Certain bureaucrats and ex-politicians want to pay off victims as quickly as possible, with Epstein's assets, to prevent dragging down Elite folks still alive.
They don't care about the forfeiture. His trial would have been devastating for the Democrats.
It must be frightening to have that knowledge to know how powerful the Democrats are. Even the President isn't safe. Do you think you're safe now that you've figured it all out? I would watch my back if I were you.
That Democrats run the South District of New York and the FCC Manhattan? Shocking I tell you. Absolutely shocking that Democrats would control something in New York City.
How does a dead man defend himself in court? Does it matter in civil cases?
If it is a forfeiture proceeding, his heirs defend his estate.
But the underlying criminal charges are she said vs he said. "He" being dead.
They tried the same type of asset forfeiture with ex-CEO Kenneth Lay from Enron and the victims were not similar.
United States v. Kenneth L. LayCourt Docket Number: H-04-0025-SS
Evidently as of Dec 2016, the forfeiture proceedings are still pending. 10 years and counting.
There's good precedent for this sort of proceeding - see Jarndyce v Jarndyce.
That is fictional Jerryskids.
You're definitely right about the devastating who's who that Epstein had but there seems to be discussion about going after the assets.
Who'll get Epstein's estate?
Lawyers call for freeze on assets till civil suits resolved
It would certainly be negligent of the investigators to not look carefully at that scenario. Someone with that many powerful enemies is definitely in grave danger.
The progressive / libertarian alliance for open borders continues to gain momentum. Here's Vox with an immigration piece that easily could have appeared on Reason:
The US is experiencing a serious labor shortage — there is incredibly high demand for low-skill work, and not enough workers available to fill those jobs. Trump’s immigration stance is only making that shortage worse, writes Vox's @AlexiaCampbell
#VoteDemocratForOpenBorders
#ImmigrationAboveAll
I thought the U.S. was in the depths of a new unemployment recession, attributable to Trump, what with all the job layoff notices you've been making us aware of lately? I guess "serious labor shortage" now means "huge numbers of unemployed?"
Our increasingly high tech society is always in need of more dummies.
LOL.
I find most vox pieces could be put up here. Who knew Vox would become a psuedo libertarian publication whose bonafides would make the Mises instistute and LP blush with shame.
Probably my favorite Vox piece is this Ezra Klein classic from mid-2016: It’s time to admit Hillary Clinton is an extraordinarily talented politician
#StillWithHer
#MostQualifiedCandidateEver
You can tell because it took the most powerful country and biggest threat to freedom in the world (Russia) colluding with one of worlds best hypnotists/talented used car salesmen with political genius's like Roger Stone, Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner helping cheetoh tan to even win. I mean with those dynamos not even someone as skilled as Hillary and her loyal antiwashingtonian band of rebels could win the electoral college. But a testament to her prowess is the Popular vote win which the Founders originally intended to be the true benchmark for presidential victory and the best greatest tool for democracy.
You do realize that Trump didn't win because he's a Russian puppet and Putin hacked the election, right? It took something more twisted and evil than any mere mortal could conjure to defeat Her Inevitableness with a buffoonish carnie. No, the truth of the matter is that Trump is the Antichrist and Satan himself was responsible for putting his son into office. You never wondered why Trump wears that dead weasel on his head? Hides the stubby little horns and the 666 tattoo. The orange skin? The pancake make-up wearing off and letting the natural red color show through. It's obvious when you think about it, and I expect the Dems to start using that line of attack in about 6 weeks or so.
So Vox is not wrong all the time. Neither is Fox News.
Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I–Vt.) staffers got physical with reporters and photographers at the Iowa State Fair.
Give a person a living wage and suddenly he gets handsy with those newly below his station.
They are literally “fighting for 15”.
I ca campaign staffer ever got physical with me they would probably have their skull cracked open for it. Unless it was Hope Hicks. She can get as physical as she wants.
Watch NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio eat a corn dog like a very normal person.
Pass.
ha, Blasio thinks he's people
Blasio, if I find one hair on the couch when I get back, I'll rub...sand...in your dead little eyes.
I also need you to go buy sand.
I don't know if they grade it, but if they do....coarse.
President Donald Trump has a weird—but sort of charming?—pen-pal relationship with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Castro didn't have any means for electronic communications so Trump assumed handwritten was what Trudeau was used to.
"Some evangelical Christians are starting to suspect that the president might not actually be one of them."
But they know the Democrats are not.
They never thought he was one of them. They just know that unlike the Democrats, he doesn't hate their guts.
And that he'll defend freedom to practice religion in the public sphere (vs. Obama's believe in private but conform stance) both via policy and by appointing constitutionally-conservative leaning judges. This is probably the central most important issue to that group when you break it down.
I’ve been a CO in a close custody prison. The superintendent, unit manager, shift commander and shift sergeant for that unit had to know that such a high profile inmate was a priority and should have ensured that steps were taken to keep him safe, the public should expect them to be called to account for their failure here.
Now, we are told Epstein was no longer on suicide watch. OK, I never had an inmate commit suicide when I was working, but a unit manager I knew told me about his experience when that happened when he was a sergeant. According to him every call button on the unit lit up in the control booth when it happened, so I find it hard to believe that no one noticed.
Finally, modern prisons are engineered to make things like this very difficult. There aren’t many anchor points in a cell and it takes time and a lot of effort to render sheets or a jumpsuit into a noose or garrote. How could you have an inmate just off suicide watch and not be checking closely to see if he was going to try something?
Yes, this story stinks worse than the Detroit Lions.
Worse than Melissa McCarthy after a weekend of Skyline and corn dogs.
Where there is a will there is a way.
Inmates can drown themselves in the toilet, hang themselves from anchor points a few feet off the floor, or slit their jugular veins with shanks.
None of those things are so easy as you might think. Depending on how the cell was designed there may not have been any anchor points above knee height (there weren’t in the cells in the prison where I worked), so that makes it tough. Then it takes time to rip the sheet into strands that have to be woven together to make a noise or garrote. The toilet contains only a little water after flushing, so that’s not really workable. Guards search cells on a regular basis looking for shanks (for good reason) and they aren’t as easy to make as TV would have you believe. Engineers worked with prison officials in designing modern prisons in order to maximize safety with the head sorts of things in mind. The biggest risk is other inmates, but even then the design of the prison makes violence difficult (in close custody facilities).
...safety with these sorts of things...”
Come one dude.
The faucet on the sink/toilet is an anchor point. The toilet bowl is an anchor point. Prisoners use blankets to plug up toilets to overflow, so there is plenty of water available to drown. You can drown in a few inches of water.
Evidently Epstein didnt drown or cut his arteries, so they're probably a moot point.
If he asphyxiated himself, he could have tied the sheets into a noose and connected the other end to his legs and done it that way. There are just a bunch of ways to kill yourself if you have the will power.
Prison suicides are not a new thing. Even prisoners with everything taken away die in their cells.
Modern prisons are a joke. Evidence of that is that prisons are loaded with drugs, cell phones, and weapons. Prisoners escape from these new prisons. How is that possible is engineers are so smart?
The reason is that an engineer is NOT a prisoner and cannot possibly think like a prisoner. Prisons are also built on technology from 20 years ago. Prisoners are always coming up with new ways to defeat the prison design. Prisoners have 24/7 to think of tricks.
While it might be possible (though extremely difficult) for an individual to strangle themselves using only their own person as you suggest, please bear in mind that I already stated that numerous prison officials ought to have placed Epstein under closer supervision. Thus, I am blaming unforgivable incompetence more than conspiracy.
As to the rest, you are simply uninformed. Modern prisons have had a lot of thought put into minimizing the ways that inmates can cause trouble and you can see that if you have ever worked in one. Just for example the toilet and sink in the cells where I worked could not have been used as you suggest. They are built as one piece and form to the wall, there are simply no points where the could be used as an anchor. There are no "faucets" only a hot and cold water button and a small spout which dispenses a small amount of water when one of the buttons is pressed. The toilet is designed to fail to flush when jammed as you suggest, so that wouldn't work. Very few prisoners escape from close custody prisons, escape from lower custody facilities is much more likely.
Most of what you point out, correctly enough, as wrong with prisons has little to do with design and much to do with the human variable. How you can stop staff from smuggling drugs and cell phones has yet to be developed (outsiders also ingeniously use things like drones to put contraband into the yard at night).
Nonetheless, you have to appreciate how much thought goes into minimizing what prisoners can use to cause mischief having worked in a prison and that gets into not only the design of the structure but also what an inmate can have in his possession or not. What you might think of as harmless for them to have might well be forbidden given that some inmate has caused trouble with in the past. And bear in mind that staff are motivated to minimize what prisoners can do because they have skin in the game-they might be attacked by those who have already demonstrated a propensity for violence (though no population of officers is ever going to be beyond corruption and there are always those who will compromise security to try and make a quick buck).
He was on suicide watch and they took him off after a period of time.
"Suicide watch" can include but is not limited to the lights being on 24/7, no bedding, nothing but a paper jump suit.
Torturers use constant light and hypothermia as a means to break people, so courts are very strict on the duration this can be used on prisoners.
You simply dont know what you are talking about.
Inmates At Oklahoma County Jail Flood Building With Raw Sewage
I could go on but you are just going to continue on the path of incorrect information.
I’m the one with experience working in a prison, so my information is not incorrect And i’m not talking about some county jail somewhere, but a modern close custody prison like the MCC where Epstein was held. Google is not proof of anything.
You don’t even need a protocol as strict as suicide watch-cells have night lights so a prisoner can be clearly seen by officers at night, so all you have to do is assign an officer to constantly patrol that cell block and keep an eye open. That that didn’t happen is proof of staggering incompetence.
So YOU say. Even some prison guards are oblivious to how prisons really operate.
I won't get into specifics of how I know more than you about prisons but lets just say certain government agencies send people undercover into prisons for certain reasons. When those people get pulled out, the do reports about their experiences.
Sounds like a whole lotta people working at the prison were in on this conspiracy. It's worse than I thought.
What do you think happened? There is no way someone in that facility should have been able to commit suicide without the guards allowing it to happen. That is just how it is. Why the guards let it happen is open for debate. The fact that they did is undeniable.
John, read my comments above. There are a bunch of ways to commit suicide or die in modern prisons.
The hardest thing about suicide in jail is the shear will to do so.
If you think old people can voluntarily shut off their own lights "when it's time to die", then why couldn't a prisoner hold their breath until they pass out over and over until their body does not revive itself?
Joke all you like, but there are a lot of people who ought to be explaining to the public what happened and, so far as I know, none of them have spoken about it.
Unlike the Trump Russia collusion conspiracy.
Which seemed to involve a whole lot of FBI, an equal number of Obama DOJ, and possibly a few CIA assets, along with a couple Trump people...
Ugh, of course conservatives are pouncing on Elizabeth Warren's use of the word "murdered" to describe what happened to Michael Brown in Ferguson. This is what AOC was talking about when she criticized people who care more about being factually correct than morally right.
#LibertariansForWarren
#HandsUpDontShoot
You don't think he was murdered?
Michael Brown? The kid from Ferguson? Not murdered.
There are no conspiracy theories. There is simply the fact that the guy was left alone even though he was a known suicide risk and had tried it before. That is either corruption or incompetence so great that it might as well be corruption.
In other news, Hillary Clinton shares her condolences for the impending suicide of Ghislaine Maxwell
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7347091/RICHARD-PENDLEBURY-Robert-Maxwells-daughter-spill-paedophile-Jeffrey-Epsteins-secrets.html
I would also say that victims and Assistant US Attorneys chose this strategy to indict him rather than getting money for victims civilly before indicting him.
Even with Epstein being a shitbag, it's just not American to take property without the owner being able to defend him/herself.
Increasing taxes on gun manufacturers will reduce gun and ammunition sales and bring in new federal revenue that we can use for both gun violence prevention and enforcement of existing gun laws.
Warren is apparently another bonehead who can't think a policy all the way through. If the taxes reduce sales, the tax revenue also goes down. You can't "use" nonexistent revenue.
But if you budget for it, you can spend it.
"Donald Trump Tied And Raped Me At Epstein's Party," 13-Year-Old Alleged In 2016 Lawsuit
https://life.shared.com/donald-trump-raped-me-at-epsteins-parties-s-13-year-old
THE DOTARD DID IT!
Yeah, that totally happened. The Democrats just didn't reveal it during the election out of kindness or something.
Why don't you stop posting child porn links and your sick fucking pedo fantasies on here? We all know you are a disgusting pedo. You don't need to prove it over and over again.
“I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”
Donald 'The Dotard' Trump
In 2000, five years before he kicked him out of MarLargo for assaulting someone. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton went to his island without the Secret Service how many dozen times?
Stop lying you worthless piece of garbage. And stop posting your pedo jerk off porn on here. No one else is a sick fuck like you are. We don't want to see it.
There are pictures of The Dotard and Melania partying with Epstein, you liar.
If The Dotard kicked Epstein out of his home in 2002 it was because they were chasing the same 13 year old.
There are pictures of The Dotard and Melania partying with Epstein, you liar.
There are pictures of them at the same parties because Epstein went with the same social circles. Again. how many times did Bill Clinton fly on his jet?
http://www.foxnews.com/us/flight-logs-show-bill-clinton-flew-on-sex-offenders-jet-much-more-than-previously-known
Former President Bill Clinton was a much more frequent flyer on a registered sex offender’s infamous jet than previously reported, with flight logs showing the former president taking at least 26 trips aboard the “Lolita Express” -- even apparently ditching his Secret Service detail for at least five of the flights, according to records obtained by FoxNews.com.
But if you want to keep lying, that is just an excuse for everyone else to talk about your child porn problem and Bill Clinton's underage sex problem.
Kiddie Raper sure spins the bullshit. I really hope his eventual death is long and agonizing. Maybe at the hands of the father of one of his victims. I’m thinking along the lines of the guy who raped Gerard Butler’s daughter in ‘Law Abiding Citizen’ gruesome.
Which is still better than what Kiddie Raper deserves.
Turd:
"Hint, hint, nudge, nudge"
Fuck off, you pathetic piece of shit.
Keep in mind that Donald Trump also name-drops Queen Elizabeth and Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping as close personal friends because he's met them once. He's a very insecure little man who has to tell himself a hundred times a day how rich and smart and powerful and significant he is to keep the voices in his head at bay, the mocking voices that keep telling him what a pathetic loser he is.
To be fair to Trump, he can call Queen Elizabeth directly and probably get through within 5 minutes.
But don't let me stop your TDS rant.
Aside from his Islamophobia, Mr. Buttplug is pretty much the perfect left-libertarian. You're just jealous your libertarian purity score isn't as high as his.
And stop spreading the lie about CP links. He already gave a satisfactory explanation for why he disappeared — he just forgot his password.
He is not Islamaphobic. No one who is as into sodomizing children as he is could be.
How many times did you jerk off to that fantasy shreek? A dozen? A hundred? Or do you save it just for special occasions?
Since we have only 12 years left before the planet becomes literally uninhabitable due to climate change, we need to do everything we can to prevent the eradication of all life on Earth. I just read in the New York Times that maintaining your lawn contributes to climate change. Anyone with a lawn should therefore only mow it once a year, if that.

No, it's eleven years and two months.

FBI struggles to confront right-wing terrorism
Indeed, the gunman who killed 22 people at a Walmart store in El Paso on Aug. 3 pushed the total number of victims slain in domestic right-wing terrorism since 2002 to 109. That’s more than the 104 people killed on U.S. soil by zealots linked to Al Qaeda or other foreign Islamist groups, the chief FBI focus since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
“The FBI has been slow to react to this, to realign resources,” said Daryl Johnson, a former Homeland Security analyst who wrote a controversial 2009 memo warning of the rise of right-wing extremism, sparking a political backlash. His unit was later disbanded and the department’s work on violent right-wing extremism was halted.
“This problem is growing,” added Johnson, who recently published “Hateland,” a book on the threat. “This is a persistent problem that needs to be addressed.”

Our lifestyle is destroying the environment of our country … creating a massive burden for future generations. Corporations are heading the destruction of our environment by shamelessly over-harvesting resources … the next logical step is to decrease the number of people in America using resources. If we can get rid of enough people, then our way of life can become more sustainable’?
Yeah, he was real "right wing" you piece of human garbage. There was nothing right wing about him. He wanted to stop immigration because Americans are evil consumers and the population must be thinned.
Go lie somewhere else.
Tell the LA Times, you imbecile. You need to tell about 100 million people that follow the news. Shooter is a classic right-wing white supremacist NAZI like yourself.
The manifesto speaks for itself. He was an enviro freak.
La times is a shitty partisan rag. It's no surprise it was your go to.
FBI 3 pushed the total number of victims slain in domestic right-wing terrorism since 2002 to 109.
HEY WHAT ABOUT THE INJURED CONGRESSMAN?
EXACTLY THE SAME!!
Poor pedo SPB.
Yeah, one of your heroes who tried to murder 8 Congressman is a big deal. Political terrorism is what pieces of shit like you do.
5 a year. In other words not a problem. One event from 2001 would average 25 a year by itself.
Do you see how fucking stupid you are?

Lying Kiddie Raper is lying.
Nice try you palsied buggerer of schoolboys.
:: ignores radical left-wing Dayton shooter ::
Yes, he was a lefty but he did not kill for a political cause.
The El Paso wingnut wanted to deter Hispanic immigration and stop Texas from going to the Democrats.
Texas Republicans are getting ready for a good, ol' fashioned ass-kicking in 2020.
Wingnuts are worried about Texas.
The El Paso wingnut wanted to deter Hispanic immigration and stop Texas from going to the Democrats.
Because he wanted fewer people in the US to save the environment.
And yes, the guy in Dayton did kill for a political cause. He said so.
And yes, the guy in Dayton did kill for a political cause. He said so.
He did? Where?
The most recent tweet on the @iamthespookster account was on August 3, the day of the shooting, when he retweeted a post saying, "Millenials have a message for the Joe Biden generation: hurry up and die."
The user's Twitter bio reads: "he/him / anime fan / metalhead / leftist / I'm going to hell and I'm not coming back." One tweet used the hashtag #HailSata

As CNN says, "his motives are a mystery". WE get it Jeff, you are a lying hack who will never admit any fault whatsoever on the part of the left. No leftist could ever kill anyone in the name of politics. That has never happened ever.
It's entirely possible that the shooter was a democrat, shared those beliefs online, AND had an entirely different motivation for killing those people. Or are we going to turn every nutjob who shoots up a school into a domestic terrorist just because the 'liked' the Obama 2012 page on Facebook?
This is it? This is your "proof"?
How many of the "Joe Biden generation" do you think were at the night clubs at 1 am?
Yes, he was evidently a Democrat, but this "proof" is very thin gruel for you to try to prove that his shooting was motivated by ideology.
No leftist could ever kill anyone in the name of politics. That has never happened ever.
Not my argument, that is a strawman. Of course there have been leftists in the past who committed mass murder in the name of ideology. The question is, did THIS one? I think it is far more reasonable to assume that he was simply demented, based on his "rape lists" and "kill lists" that he constructed in highschool.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dayton-shooting-hit-list-rape-list-bellbrook-high-school-classmates-say-ohio-shooter-connor-betts/
Nope, sorry, you own the Dayton shooter, since the right wing has to own all their shooters.
At least you're honest in simply wanting to assign blame on those you hate based on whatever thin evidence and narratives that you can conjure.
You can have him, too.
Kiddie Raper. Just accept it. Libertarians and conservatives tend to be good people. Progressives like you are twisted and evil. FFS, you are incredibly dishonest, and get off on sexual violence directed at small children.
You really should kill yourself. Better than raping more children.
It is almost as if the shooter had a sincerely incoherent muddle of political beliefs that cannot be pigeonholed into Left or Right, or he is trolling everybody and did it to satisfy his own perversity by giving false flags.
This is the study that included multiple minority on minority crimes as white nationalist linked.
It is shreek, lying and jerking off to child porn is what he does.
Holy shit... 109?!? In a decade?!? Come on all you retards, panic! Meanwhile more people were killed by blunt weapons such as hammers last year than were killed by long rifles. Ban all Home Depots.

So whose betting that either the Sandyhook kids or Seth Rich are behind this Epstein hit?
The Sandyhook kids were kidnapped and have now been trained into an elite team of government killers with Seth Rich as their leader.
Oh, no way. It must have been the Russians! Putin offed him personally! Ninja-snuck his way into Epstein's cell and killed him with the Vulcan Death Grip! Just to protect the Orange Hitler!
Putin does an awful lot favors for Drumpf for someone who controls him with blackmail. Kind of feels like he doesn't exactly have this whole blackmail thing down pat.
As Scott Adams found out after a disastrous Dilbert cartoon, there is no Vulcan death grip.
Sure, but if someone really believes it was the Russians, that person probably believes in the Vulcan Death Grip too.
Alec Baldwin is actually saying that. Calling Epstein's killing a Russian hit job.
Yeah, the religious right is going to turn on Trump over swearing because it is not as if the alternative is not openly hostile to Christian religion that does not allow progressives to dictate their dogma by law and regulation.
Yeah, they totally are willing to see the practice of their religion effectively outlawed because Orange Man Bad.
The MSM Propagandists are so desperate they just say stupid shit every day hoping some of their shit will stick.
All religion is false.
Proof that conservatives are stupid (like Hayek said).
Do you have to that on point?
All comments made by pedo Sarah Palin's Butthole are false
Citation needed for your assuredness.
We'll add this to the observation that blue collar workers and farmers in the Midwest are anti-Trump because they're the ones suffering from the trade war the most.
With this same logic, I suppose we should assume that World War II veterans opposed World War II the most--since they're the ones who paid the heaviest price for the war?
Incidentally, Ronald Reagan never so much as threw the evangelicals a bone. Barry Goldwater vocally despised them. They're still considered the fathers of modern conservatism.
That's the great thing about evangelicals. You don't need to court them. The Republicans can always depend on the Democrats to give evangelicals no where else to go.
Within the last hour, the Trump administration announced a new rule that makes immigrants ineligible for green cards if they apply for social services.
"Immigrants legally in the U.S. will be ineligible for green cards if they use any of an array of social programs, and prospective immigrants will be barred from entry if they can’t convince a consular officer that they will never use such programs, as part of a final rule set to be published by the Trump administration."
https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-administration-makes-legal-immigrants-who-draw-from-social-programs-ineligible-for-green-cards-11565618625?
IF IF IF Congress hasn't authorized this in some way, then I oppose this rule on constitutional grounds--but those honest libertarians among us who want to see open immigration between the U.S. and Mexico should support a system like this within the context of a theoretical law being debated in Congress to authorize it.
I maintain that far fewer people oppose immigration when they're not being forced to pay for immigrants with their taxes, and anyone who opposes limiting social programs for immigrants--even if it means less grass roots opposition to immigration--should stop pretending to care about open borders.
This is probably a necessary prerequisite if you want public support for open borders.
Congress has authorized this. The 1996 Welfare reform act made non citizens ineligible for welfare. This is Trump finally enforcing the law after 8 years of Obama not doing so.
That makes sense. I'm not familiar with it myself, but if it's consistent with laws duly written and ratified, then my opposition is nil.
And I'm not kidding about the necessary prerequisite for open borders either. Opposition to immigration fades for a lot of people when you take social programs out of the equation.
Notice, too, that--if that's the case, that the rule is perfectly consistent with the law and the Constitution . . .
Then where Trump is striking a blow for open borders with a perfectly constitutional law, Obama's unconstitutional DACA executive order created more grass roots opposition to all kinds of immigration--even asylum seekers--than there ever was before. How many times have I pointed out that the most likely reason why hundreds of thousands of immigrants started streaming to the U.S. border--80% of them children--is because DACA created an enormous incentive for immigrants to come here and cross illegally with their children?
Lonewacko, the anti-immigration activist, used to get laughed off the board around here--and rightly so. Obama managed to do with DACA what Lonewacko failed to do after years of trying--Obama made anti-immigration more legitimate among libertarians than it ever was before. Hell, Obama's stupidly made immigration a separation of powers issue. Watch the stupid people in the pro-immigration lobby oppose Trump's rule--when what Trump is doing is ultimately more objectively pro-open borders than anything a president could do.
Shoving things down the country's throat by extra legal means tends to do more harm than good over the long run.
Kinda like declaring a fake emergency to build a wall when Congress explicitly told him no?
Unfortunately for Congress, telling Trump "no" on this emergency requires Trump's signature to make that Bill become law. Or they need a veto-proof majority, which Democrats dont have.
Never mind the other 30+ other "Emergencies" that have been declared over the decades or still running that Congress does nothing about.
IOW, Congress didn't tell Trump shit.
Is it a fake emergency or a humanitarian disaster caused by Trump this week?
Congress didn't tell him no. They told him yes. Had they wanted to stop him, they could have prevented him from reprograming the money in the NDAA.
I will forgive you this one. You are not being dishonest. You just don't know anything about how appropriations law or much of anything about government beyond Orange Man Bad.
Maybe some day you will stop taking pride in your ignorance.
Pedo Jeffy, we’ve been over this. The emergency is real. Also, as you are a fucking Canadian, what Americans do with the southern border is none of your concern. You flapping headed little pederast retard.
Doesn't it!
It further underscores the point that the reason we shouldn't violate the Constitution isn't because the text is sacred. It's because it's full of warning signs about the negative consequences of doing x, y, or z.
It isn't just in the U.S. either, and it wasn't just Obama! In France, Germany, Italy, and the U.K., they've all been in political crisis mode because their immigration policies were set by other than democratic means.
Don't like anti-immigrant populism? Well we reap what we sow! The framers didn't give immigration to Congress for no reason. It's the same thing with treaties--and the Paris Climate Change "accord". Populism in all its flavors is anti-elitism, and elitism is about people inflicting things like immigration policy and climate change treaties from above on the people over their objections and against their will.
All the people on the left who think populism is bad now, do they have any idea how much worse it would have been if Hillary Clinton had been here to let more than 100,000 asylum seekers in per month--over people's objections and against their will--and inflicted the Paris Climate Change "accord" on us, too?
The short term substitute for democracy within its proper purview is populism. It's a fact. If we want to change policy on a properly democratic issue over the long term, the only effective means is persuasion.
I agree with this Ken. As I've said before, I'd support this type of thing in Congress especially if it meant that we could greatly increase the number of work visas, and apply the same restrictions to visa holders.
Trump doing this alone is almost certainly unconstitutional. The Congress has the power to regulate naturalization. I'm not aware of any law ceding that power to the Executive.
No. It is not unconstitutional. The immigration and naturalization act gives the executive all kinds of discretion in denying entry to aliens, including doing something illegal.
According to the 1996 Welfare Reform, immigrants are not eligible for welfare. Any immigrant who tries to get it is committing fraud. Committing fraud or entering with the intent to commit fraud is a perfectly valid reason to deny someone entry.
I wasn't aware of that. I don't doubt you, but curious if you have the relevant section to link to?
From a historical perspective, the limitations on immigrant welfare use included in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (PRWORA) are but the latest in a long line of restrictions, dating back to Colonial days, designed to minimize the costs imposed by the potential immigration of public charges. The first federal restrictions were enacted in 1882, when Congress banned the entry of any persons unable to take care of himself or herself without becoming a public charge, and expanded in 1903 to allow the deportation of immigrants who became public charges within two years after arrival in the United States for causes existing prior to their landing.
Despite the growth of the welfare state and the increasing use of welfare by immigrants, the public charge provisions of immigration law rarely were used in the past few decades. Congress instead chose PRWORA as the vehicle through which to reduce immigrant use of public assistance programs. In general terms, the legislation, as signed by President Clinton, contained two key provisions:
Most non-citizens who arrived in the country before August 22, 1996 were to be kicked off of the SSI and food stamp rolls within a year. (This provision of the legislation, however, was never fully enforced).
Immigrants who entered the United States after August 22, 1996 are prohibited from receiving most types of public assistance. The ban is lifted when the immigrant becomes an American citizen.
http://cis.org/Report/Impact-Welfare-Reform-Immigrant-Welfare-Use
Under Section 212(a)(4) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), an individual seeking admission to the United States or seeking to adjust status to that of an individual lawfully admitted for permanent residence (Green Card) is inadmissible if the individual, "at the time of application for admission or adjustment of status, is likely at any time to become a public charge." Public charge does not apply in naturalization proceedings. If an individual is inadmissible, admission to the United States or adjustment of status is not granted.
What they are doing is saying that if you are on welfare, you are a public charge and inadmissible under the INA. If someone on welfare isn't a public charge, what is?
Thanks John.
I've long used this argument as a path to freeing up immigration. It's good to know that it already exists.
“at the time of application for admission or adjustment of status, is likely at any time to become a public charge.”
Talk about leaving something up to interpretation...
Just curious - how does this impact programs like EBT and WiC according to provisions of the law. I live in a heavily immigrant neighborhood and know for a fact that many are on these programs. I've always assumed they qualified because at least one of their kids was born in the US.
The power to regulate migrants was already mostly constitutional given to the Executive.
per US Constitution, Article I, Section 9, Clause 1:
The migration or importation of such persons as any of the states now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each person.
Leo hates this federal power and has TDS #MemoryHole problem.
There's a legitimate question as to whether Trump's rule is authorized by Congress.
That's the issue.
I vaguely remember hearing about laws that authorize this, but if someone wants to do the deep dive to find the link, that'd be great.
You said it was unconstitutional. now you are making a statutory claim. This is why I dont take your immigration arguments seriously.
Not to speak for Ken, but It would be unconstitutional for the President to do this alone without a law passed by Congress granting him the power. Article 1 enumerates and limits the powers of Congress, not the Executive.
"You said it was unconstitutional. now you are making a statutory claim. This is why I dont take your immigration arguments seriously."
Do you really not understand that the president setting the rules on immigration is unconstitutional?
DACA was unconstitutional because Congress wasn't involved.
If Congress made the law, then it's constitutional. If Trump writes an EO without a law that authorizes what he wants to do, then his EO is just as unconstitutional as DACA.
Do you really not understand that setting the rules of naturalization is an enumerated power of Congress--like the power to declare war--and that when the president usurps an enumerated power of Congress without congressional authorization, it makes his actions unconstitutional? Because if you don't understand that after all this time, I never should have taken any of your arguments seriously.
Did you flunk 8th grade civics?
Do you not understand a statutory vs constitutional argument? If the president is defying a constitutionally passed congressional law, the issue is statutory not constitutional. You misunderstood the very basics of the legal system.
"There’s a legitimate question as to whether Trump’s rule is authorized by Congress."
That's what I wrote. That's what you responded to.
The point is that the constitutionality of Trump's rules depends on whether Congress deferred to the president on that issue with a law.
The point is that setting the rules of naturalization is an enumerated power of Congress.
The point is that violating the separation of powers makes things unconstitutional.
The suggestion that because your mind is functioning on a higher, more complicated plane than mine and it makes it hard for you to follow such a simple observation as mine is just fucking stupid.
It's hilarious when you try to demean others without understanding even basic legal premises. God what a joke.
A good way to demean yourself is to claim that other people's arguments shouldn't be taken seriously if they think that violating the separation of powers makes something unconstitutional.
prospective immigrants will be barred from entry if they can’t convince a consular officer that they will never use such programs
How could ANYONE, let alone an immigrant, convince someone that they will "never" use welfare programs?
In the UK, they routinely reject tourists who can't prove they have the financial meant to take care of themselves. That's pretty typical of more socialized countries, actually. The more people are forced to pay for each other, the less accommodating they are to foreigners. It's one thing within the EU, where everyone was required to offer more or less the same benefits and social services. Quite another when you're trying to get into an EU country from outside the EU.
One option might be that the consular officer might ask the immigrant to sign a statement promising not to go on welfare programs in the U.S. Do you think it's unreasonable for other countries to ask immigrants not to go on their welfare programs for the poor--or just the United States? What country has so few poor people that they want immigrants to come to their country and become a burden on the taxpayer?
I've been a tourist in various EU countries, including UK, and have never had to prove I had financial means. What they do look at is if your passport has less than 6 months until it expires. Travel agencies routinely tell you that U.S. passports are really only good for six months less than what date appears on the passport.
I've seen tourists denied entry into the UK for having insufficient means to support themselves while they're there.
I saw a bunch of stories of people talking about getting detained and sent back home from the airport for lack of funds at that goddamn video site owned by Google. This came up after quick Startpage search. It's someone denied a visa before arriving, but the logic is the same.
https://travel.stackexchange.com/questions/60455/uk-visit-visa-refusal-insufficient-financial-documentation
The mom unit wanted to go to the UK for a year to open an office in London, hire a 50 person staff, and train them. For a long time, the UK didn't understand why they had to send an American. Why couldn't they hire someone in the UK to hire the staff and train them?
They made it a pain in the ass to hire 50 people for jobs that wouldn't exist in their country otherwise--because they weren't sure why the person who hired and trained them for a year couldn't possibly already be a citizen of the EU?
My understanding is that this is typical, and, in that light, I find the idea that it's absurd for the government to ask that people who are immigrating of their own free will aren't doing so on the taxpayers' dime to be absurd itself. I think it's great that people want to come here--the more, the merrier. No, I'm not willing to pay for the privilege of you coming here--and, no, I'm not willing to pay for your rent, food, or health insurance either.
If they included free/reduced lunch use in that, they could justify deporting nearly every immigrant in the last 20 years.
My alma mater went from about 8% Hispanic in the early 90s, with a 14% free/reduced lunch rate, to 70% Hispanic today, with a 75% free/reduced lunch rate. You can track the growth of Hispanic students and the growth of free/reduced lunch use with near-perfect correlation at this and most other schools along Denver's Front Range.
Florida man arrested for alleged threat involving AR-15: ‘Don’t go to Walmart next week’
Clayton, of Winter Park, was taken into custody following a joint investigation involving the FDLE, FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and Winter Park Police Department. He appeared to believe in the white supremacist ideology and had a history of writing threatening messages on Facebook using fake accounts, according to investigators.
Another National Socialist who wants to hurt average Americans at an American institution?
It was just a left wing guy trying to start a boycott of Wal-Mart.
Essentially, the gunman’s alleged manifesto reads as a carbon copy of that espoused by those who carried out the recent and respective attacks on the mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.
"This is a response to the Hispanic invasion," it reads, according to the FBI. It then goes on to accuse the Democratic Party of "pandering to the Hispanic voting bloc”, while also expressing his contempt for “race mixing” and support for “sending them back.”
These right-wing extremists are not only channelling neo-Nazi borne “Great Replacement” conspiracy theories, which frame demographic change as a threat to white Europeans, but also taking a cue from the words and policies of President Donald Trump.

Stop lying you piece of garbage.
John, you're going to have to write every media outlet, NGO, school, and the FBI to correct them and tell them the El Paso, Christchurch, Pittsburgh, Garlic shooters were all really lefties and they are all mistaken.
Do it now! Hurry!
You mean the leftist media is lying and you are here repeating the same sorry lies? No way Shreek
The manifesto says what it says. No matter how many times you lie about it, doesn't change it.
Kiddie Raper really should kill himself. America already has plenty of progtard sexual predators.
If turd were kept from lying, he couldn't post here.
That is a fucking link and quote, you moron. I didn't write a word of it.
But rub this into your knotty head again:
These right-wing extremists are not only channelling neo-Nazi borne “Great Replacement” conspiracy theories, which frame demographic change as a threat to white Europeans, but also taking a cue from the words and policies of President Donald Trump.
If turd were kept from lying, he couldn’t post here.
Yeah, you also repeat the same lies told by the other progtards, you child raping cunt.
John's narrative is set. The El Paso shooter is a left-wing environmental nutjob!
Let's just ignore the 90% of the manifesto that is inconvenient and talks about "Hispanic invasion", Great Replacement conspiracy theories, fears that Texas will go blue, support for the Christchurch shooting, etc., and focus on that 10% of the manifesto that makes Team Blue look bad. That's the ticket!
I just keep quoting the manifesto that says what it says. You keep ignoring it and pretending it says what you want it to say. It is really that simple.
Every time you lie about this, I am going to post that quote. So, please keep lying. It just ensures that that quote gets more exposure.
I freely admit that he was motivated in part by environmental concerns.
Will you freely admit that he was ALSO motivated at least in part by racial concerns - he was opposed to race mixing, for example? And by voting concerns, i.e., fear that Hispanics will turn Texas blue?
He wasn't a racist. He thought the races should be separated because they couldn't seem to live with each other and separating them was the only solution not because he thought one was inferior to another.
Also, his concern over the Hispanic invasion and the Democrats taking over wasn't as simple as you portray.
With that in the background, Crusius expressed deep concerns about politics in the U.S. One of the "biggest betrayals" in history, he wrote, was "the takeover of the United States government by unchecked corporations." Crusius said he could write "a ten page essay on all the damage these corporations have caused." But the biggest problem, he said, was a dangerous political mix: "Due to the death of the baby boomers, the increasingly anti-immigrant rhetoric of the right and the ever increasing Hispanic population, America will soon become a one party-state."
That one party, of course, was the Democratic Party. And although Crusius had little use for Republicans, he was most angry about what he had seen in the recent Democratic presidential debates:
They intend to use open borders, free healthcare for illegals, citizenship and more to enact a political coup by importing and then legalizing millions of new voters. With policies like these, the Hispanic support for Democrats will likely become nearly unanimous in the future. The heavy Hispanic population in Texas will make us a Democrat stronghold. Losing Texas and a few other states with heavy Hispanic population to the Democrats is all it would take for them to win nearly every presidential election. Although the Republican Party is also terrible. Many factions within the Republican Party are pro-corporation. Pro-corporation = pro-immigration. But some factions within the Republican Party don't prioritize corporations over our future. So the Democrats are nearly unanimous with their support of immigration while the Republicans are divided over it. At least with Republicans, the process of mass immigration and citizenship can be greatly reduced.
Crusius expressed a number of reasons for his anxiety about immigration. Among them was the growth of automation in the American economy. "Continued immigration will make one of the biggest issues of our time, automation, so much worse," Crusius wrote. Crusius had obviously read reports that millions of American jobs will be lost to automation in coming years. He noted that while "some people will be retrained ... most will not."
Crusius felt automation would take away his future, too. "My whole life I have been preparing for a future that currently doesn't exist," he wrote. "The job of my dreams will likely be automated."
The automation threat, Crusius continued, means the U.S. "will have to initiate a basic universal income to prevent widespread poverty and civil unrest as people lose their jobs." (Crusius shared an interest in universal basic income, or UBI, and a pessimism about job retraining, with Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang.) Crusius' idea was that fewer "invaders" meant more resources for government programs. "Achieving ambitious social projects like universal healthcare and UBI would become far more likely to succeed if tens of millions of dependents are removed," he wrote.
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/columnists/has-anyone-actually-read-the-el-paso-manifesto
The guy is anti corporation and pro welfare. Whatever he is, he was not inspired by Trump and his ideology has nothing to do with Trump. He in fact said so in so many words in the manifesto.
A person who wants to hurt as many illegals as possible inside America is smarter to attack a Super Mercado or carnicería where illegals and Hispanic legal immigrants get more authentic Hispanic foods.
Even a border town Walmart is going to have a bunch of Americans in it, depending on what time of day.
Either that El Paso shooter is stupid, didn't really want to target just illegal immigrants, or there is WAY more to this story.
I find it very difficult to believe that one could be opposed to miscegenation without being a racist. Furthermore he evidently bought into actual white nationalist stuff such as the Great Replacement crap.
Yes he is anti-corporate. Yes he is pro-welfare. (Which is a mainstream bipartisan position, by the way, not limited to just the left or the right.)
and his ideology has nothing to do with Trump
With regards to the "invasion" stuff, let's not forget that his words echo words that Trump himself used. Do you think this is a coincidence? I think Trump's intemperate choice of words has made his types of statements more socially acceptable, and frankly I think that's the extent of Trump's involvement here.
I think it is more plausible that, rather than being radicalized by Trump himself, he was more heavily radicalized by the online reactionary right. There are commenters right here who advocate for shooting illegal immigrants at the border, who advocate for ethno-nationalism, and this is a "respectable" publication. I can only imagine how much worse it is in the fever swamps of 8chan.
He is not a one-dimensional caricature and it's wrong for anyone to characterize him either as exclusively a "right-wing nutjob" or a "left-wing nutjob". He is a nutjob for sure.
You are truly pathetic
Oblivious to history, Jeffy argues as if racism and leftism are incompatible.
Racism is integral to leftism.
Was John always this detached from reality? I don't remember him being this crazy.
John is showing signs of advanced syphilis. It has gotten worse.
Stop jerking off to fantasies involving me. It is bad enough you do it to kids. When is the FBI finally going to catch your sorry ass?
Kiddie Raper, you should have your testicles beaten, with your own shoes.

I noticed that as well.
A tale of two headlines:
1) "Trump’s tariffs cost US businesses $3.4 billion in June"
----CNBC
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/06/trumps-tariffs-cost-us-businesses-3point4-billion-in-june.html
2) U.S. Collected $63 Billion in Tariffs Through June
----WSJ
Two observations:
1) These costs are ultimately being borne by consumers. Even if we're talking about money moving into the treasury through tariffs, that "revenue" isn't taking the form of retiring debt or cost cutting. Consumers aren't feeling it much now because the story all over the world is about deflation. The ten year Treasury keeps flirting with a 1.5% yield. The inflationary impact of not having access to cheap substitutes from China will eventually have an inflationary impact. It's just not happening right now.
2) $63 billion a year in revenue means that whomever takes the White House in the future will need to decide they care more about trade with China than they do about 1) weathering the criticism of making nice with the Chinese after they do the awful things they do in Hong Kong, hold millions of Muslims in reeducation camps, etc. and 2) they'll have to care more about free trade than having a $63 billion a year revenue stream.'
$63 billion in annual revenue / 1.6% in ten year treasuries--doesn't that mean that tariffs can finance about $4 trillion in new government spending? I don't care who you put in the White House in 2020, the chances of anybody making nice with the Chinese so that they can deprive themselves of $4 trillion in new spending is not fucking likely.
When we signed on to NAFTA and GATT, it was the end of the Cold War, and the collapse of communism was an historical opportunity that average people understood. If I weren't so fundamentally opposed to linking to that god-awful site Google controls, I'd link to the part in Excalibur, where Merlin gives that speech at Stonehenge about how "people forget". We're lucky we ever got into GATT in the first place. I hope I'm wrong, but we never see trade like that again in our lifetimes.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-collects-63-billion-in-chinese-tariffs-through-june-11565168400?
"For it is the doom of men that they forget".
----Merlin
$63 billion in annual revenue / 1.6% in ten year treasuries–doesn’t that mean that tariffs can finance about $4 trillion in new government spending?
Um... that's not how interest works. If I could buy treasuries that face value yielded 63.5x the purchase value (ie 4T/63B) then I would probably sell and mortgage everything I had and move all of my money into treasuries.
If we're talking T-bills, then a $4T bill at 1.6% would have a purchase price of $3.937T, not $63B.
If my math was upside down and backwards, I apologize. The value of that revenue stream is still a multiple of that stream--and and an average of ten years on that stream is worth a nice chunk of change. Whomever is in the White House and controls congress will have a disincentive to turn off that money spigot--if their ability to spend a multiple of that revenue stream is important to them. And when has spending more money not been important to Congress? Why would the government turn off a revenue source?
They might do it on principle.
They might do it in the wake of the collapse of communism as a way to integrate China into the world economy--even that was a hard sell. Remember MFN status?
If you had to bet on one of the following to walk away from that revenue stream--'cause capitalism and trade--which one would it be: Biden, Harris, Sanders, Trump, or Warren?
Surely, you wouldn't count on Congress (no matter which party were in charge) to stand on principle and refuse to spend whatever multiple they can get for ten years on $63 billion in annual interest payments, would you?
They have $63 billion in a new revenue stream for interest payments. $63 billion over ten years is $630 billion in solid credit rating as the government interest payments minus inflation expectations. The market will put a multiple on that, and give the government lots of new money to spend. If you're a Democrat, you can do a lot for climate change with that money. If you're a Republican, you can think of plenty of things to spend that money on, too. All of them can think of things to do with that money that will help them get reelected. Few of them will actually vote to kill that money spigot on principle because of capitalism and trade.
Don't expect the tariffs to go away when Donald Trump is out of office. Trump may be our best hope to see the end of the trade war. After him, few will be able to resist the temptation of that revenue stream. There are all sorts of great libertarian capitalist reasons to keep that money out of the government's hands and in the hands of consumers, but there are also lots of political reasons to spend money on politically important constituencies and give libertarian capitalists the finger.
Trump may be the best hope to end the trade war he started for no good reason.
Good thing all trade restrictions started Jan 20, 2017.
Hahaha.
Yeah, he probably is--and a lot of that is about the sorry state of the opposition.
That may not be how interest works, but that's how government budgeting works. Give them an extra 63 billion and they're not going to spend a mere 63 billion, they're going to borrow and spend 4 trillion and use the 63 billion to pay the interest on the 4 trillion. They don't give a shit who's going to pay back the 4 trillion because it ain't gonna be them.
I wonder if the Hong Kong protests are genuinely violent, or if there are agents provacateurs (sp?) planted by the government to make it look like HK needs the intervention of the mainland troops.
And, conspiracies aside, the mere fact the feds let someone in their custody die is a bad thing from several points of view. Not only does it let the person escape justice on his own terms, but it also opens the door for *actual* conspiracies, if such deaths are taken lightly.
It shouldn't be necessary to prove a conspiracy in order to hold people accountable. The presumption should be the prison authorities could have prevented it but didn't, and that someone needs to get fired/prosecuted/whatever.
Epstein is sitting on some beach in Israel.
I think I see what you did there. Shameful.
Oh that is fun.
Always the legendary Mossad. They owe a favor to the Brits or some Gulf prince. The Mossad does not have inside the prison it provides the background support to get it done and erased.
Would make a great Daniel Silva novel.
Then somehow a Bahamas offshore account goes to zero.
>Speaking of immigration. Let's make it clear that if it becomes necessary for them to flee we will accept any Hong Kong protesters.
Shouldn't they be going to the UK?
The UK cut them off from immigrating even before the handover.
I should say HK refugees, if the shit hits the fan, would make great U. S. citizens. They'd be accustomed to living in one of the world's most capitalist cities, and they'd be pissed off that socialists took their freedom away from them. See if they or their descendants will vote for the party of "this time socialism will be different!"
Plus draining China of talented citizens and making them U. S. citizens would be helpful in a confrontation with that country.

Texas is gaining House seats from the Census 2020, so even if the GOP/Democrat Party races get a bit closer, the gerrymandering by GOP controlled Texas Legislature will erase most of those gains.
Its why Lefties who know what is going on are screaming about GOP gerrymandering. The Democrats Party is going to get gutted based on Census 2020. Quite a few Blue state House seats are going to Red states.

As the situation in Hong Kong intensifies and China threatens to intervene, it becomes increasingly clear that the U.S. should accept individuals forced to flee the city.
It's not that clear at all, actually. The US does not have the responsibility to take in every suffering human on the planet.
Send them to Canada, they could use the population numbers.
Sending people. Because people are like mail or soybeans.
They are the way China treat them. Even at their worst excesses, American factories never required suicide nets.
Suicidal American factory workers simply bring along a firearm and take out a few co-workers before turning the firearm on themselves. Nets do nothing to prevent this.

‘Trump is ruining our markets’: Struggling farmers are losing a huge customer to the trade war — China
My Family's farming business is doing better than ever and we don't sell to Commies in China that run an authoritarian regime.
My Advice: Try growing other crops and/or types of trees.
Good business advice.
Only buy or sell with people who share your political beliefs and similar background.
Yeah, that's what I said dum-dum.
I still sell to Commies in the USA. They love to pay more for "Organic" fruits and vegetables.
Ok LC
Glad the family farm you were born into is doing well. You do not export just sell to domestic commies.
One question. Why did you place organic in quotes? Surely you all are not just selling roundup ready produce as organic. Tell me it ain’t so.
What that has to do with communism I do not know.
I still have hope for you LC.
Funny assumption that Family Farms cannot be made by family members during this lifetime and must be some massive family land that used to be a slave plantation.
I put Organic in quotes because some people pay a premium for food with this label and most people dont even know how its grown differently. We make a killing off “Organic” sales.
We dont sell to Chinese commies but commies in the USA who buy our agricultural products. Just Making fun of your claims.
And Organic food usually doesnt last as long for customers, so they buy more of this expensive type of food.
Sorry, but I disagree that this was merely incompetence.
First question: was the previous situation when Epstein was found injured in the jail in late July a) a suicide attempt, b) a fake suicide attempt, or c) attempted murder? What did Epstein say it was to the jail authorities or his attorney?
Second question: which option justifies taking Epstein off suicide watch?
Third question: why weren't the video cameras operable; how long have they been out, what caused the failure, why weren't they reported broken (or were they), and why weren't they fixed?
Fourth question: how come we don't know any of the answers?
If this is incompetence, then people should be fired. I won't hold my breath.
In every cop show I watch, the competent cop always says, "I don't believe in coincidences."
Really? You're going to play the whole "extreme shadiness is not proof, therefore there is nothing going on" card? Are you one of his clients or what?

These people would probably end up in jail with Epstein and lose everything just as Epstein would.
To think otherwise is beyond naive.
Its stupid.
Final Moments With Jeffrey Epstein
While it is probably police neglect it still might be wise to place Epstein's associate and one-time girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell on an Arkancide watch list.
Regardless, not to worry, the FBI is now on the job. The appropriate incriminating documents are being manufactured and the usual suspects will be rounded up for questioning. Everything will remain "under investigation" until this finally goes away and can be buried deeper than Epstein. The rich, powerful, and connected will continue to sleep comfortably—as usual.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.
Epstein wasn't a normal prisoner. He was a famous prisoner with lots of names to give up to get more pedophiles thrown in jail. If they actually were treating him just like any other prisoner (which you can bet your shiny balls they weren't) with their security and health watch, then every employee in that prison needs to be fired for gross incompetence and lack of common sense.
It is not just the pedo sex. This guy had billions of dollars going through his hands which are unaccounted for.
Yeah, no conspiracy, Epstein only had the names of people who sexually assaulted minors in his black book. Nothing to see here. Fuck you, "Reason".
