Can't fathom any reason why anybody would expect the SCOTUS to overturn the state supreme court on an issue involving violation of state laws.

Really? Some state laws can violate the federal constitution and so are proper matters for the Supreme Court to take up. The state supreme court can be overturned, for example, if it approves a religious requirement for state office, or a violation of church/state separation, or restrictions on gun ownership, free press, or permits slavery (outside the bounds of state service of course), etc.
Federalism is all well and good, but it's a division of powers, not a delegation of all power to the states.

The rate at which female suicide bombers, many of them young girls, have been used in West Africa in 2017 has significantly risen compared to 2016.

Further, in family law, a male child who is raped can be on the hook for paternity because of a State's "superior interest in requiring the natural parents of the child to support the child."
