President Donald Trump is expected to sign a new executive order today designed to give force to his "Buy American and Hire American" agenda.

He's delivering on his promise of expensive, shoddily built goods.

"?The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to overturn an order by the Arkansas Supreme Court stopping that state from executing two death row inmates."

Can't fathom any reason why anybody would expect the SCOTUS to overturn the state supreme court on an issue involving violation of state laws.

    1. Shirley Knott   8 years ago

Really? Some state laws can violate the federal constitution and so are proper matters for the Supreme Court to take up. The state supreme court can be overturned, for example, if it approves a religious requirement for state office, or a violation of church/state separation, or restrictions on gun ownership, free press, or permits slavery (outside the bounds of state service of course), etc.
Federalism is all well and good, but it's a division of powers, not a delegation of all power to the states.

      1. Stormy Dragon   8 years ago

Yes, but how could a state court's stay on execution violate the federal constitution? There's nothing in the federal constitution requiring people to be executed.

        1. Zeb   8 years ago

Yeah, unless it's a "cruel and unusual punishment" thing, I don't see how the SC has any business getting involved in state decisions about the death penalty. Least of all when it's a decision not to execute someone.

          1. Agammamon   8 years ago

Which is why they failed to get involved.

The issue is the maniacs in the state that are so keen on murdering dudes that they forced this all the way to the USSC.

  5. Fist of Etiquette   8 years ago

Suspected Facebook killer Steve W. Stephens is still at large.

If your parents named you twice, you might go on a spree, too.

This is not a happy story

Female suicide bomber attacks in West Africa on pace to quadruple in 2017

The rate at which female suicide bombers, many of them young girls, have been used in West Africa in 2017 has significantly risen compared to 2016.

    ...snip

The ages of the bombers have ranged from just seven-years-old to middle-aged. The use of women can make it easier for jihadist groups to conduct suicide attacks, as explosives may be easier to hide, and men are less likely to search women due to cultural sensitivities.

Some countries, such as Cameroon, Niger, and Chad, have banned certain Islamic dress to try to combat this. However, the jihadists continue to exploit females in their attacks in West Africa. Based on the numbers seen so far in 2017, this tactic is on the rise in a significant way.

"A dream scenario for liberals would be a knockout blow in which Democrat Jon Ossoff clears 50 percent in Tuesday's primary battle with 17 other candidates ? including 11 GOP candidates."

I'm going to go way out on a limb here and predict this guy isn't going to get 50% of the vote with 17 other candidates in the race today. Trump will tweet what yyuuge victory this is, and yet they will probably piss away that seat in the runoff election in June anyhow.

2 lanes on I-20 West open after highway buckles; repairs underway

Two right lanes on I-20 West between Candler and Gresham roads in DeKalb County are open again after a portion of the highway buckled earlier Monday due to a damaged gas line, police said.

      Isn't I-85 still hosed?

GDOT officials announced on April 4, 2017, that repairs could be completed by mid-June 2017.[12] Traffic is being diverted to I-285, I-75 and SR 400.

I guess maintenance spending isn't sexy.

    3. Curt   8 years ago

I was amazed this morning to see that all lanes were open... including the one that bust open.

In other news, the problem that happened wasn't actually due to any lack of maintenance. It was due to a fuck-up by the contractor who was doing maintenance.

Boeing to Dismiss Hundreds of Engineers Amid Sales Slowdown

The Chicago-based company, which emerged as the face of U.S. manufacturing under President Donald Trump, has been winnowing employment for more than a year as a record jetliner sales spree fades. Boeing trimmed the Washington workforce by 9 percent to 70,640 employees over the past year. The company's total headcount has shrunk 7.6 percent to 146,962 since March 2016.

    Thanks, Daddy!

That's just what he wants you to think: President Trump's Favorite Conspiracy Theorist Is Just 'Playing a Character,' His Lawyer Says

The Austin American-Statesman reports Jones is in the middle of a custody battle, and his ex-wife and mother of his three children, Kelly Jones, has said his fiery rants prove he is not a fit parent. "He's not a stable person," Kelly Jones has said, according to the Statesman. "He broadcasts from home. The children are there, watching him broadcast."

    1. A Cynic's Guide to Zen   8 years ago

Far be it from me to decide what's best for the Jones children; however, whatever the mom chooses to do here is now Public Record and the Internet does not forget.

She should tread very carefully here, for no other reason than each statement and allegation she makes will haunt her and her children in perpetuity.

Fucking Family Law. The worst of the worst.

Fucking Family Law. The worst of the worst.

That is something I agree with.

        1. A Cynic's Guide to Zen   8 years ago

In the entirety of the law, no other equity court has as large an impact on an individual's life.

The sexes enjoy different and subjective standards, the judges are Eichmann-esque, and case law means nothing. "Best interests of the child" is the prevailing principle, yet it is almost never the case that the best interests of the child include the child's preference.

Further, in family law, a male child who is raped can be on the hook for paternity because of a State's "superior interest in requiring the natural parents of the child to support the child."

          Fucked. Fuck-ed. Fooked.

Mountain lion takes small dog from Bay Area bedroom

The dog, a 15-pound Portuguese Podengo, was at the foot of a bed near the dog's owner and a child when it woke them up around 3 a.m. by "barking aggressively."

The adult witness told authorities she saw the shadow of an animal come into the room through the French doors, grab the dog from the bed, and walk out. When she grabbed a flashlight, she saw "large wet paw prints" near the bedroom's entrance, and called 911.

    Because it's about wire tapping:

How Secret Underwater Wiretapping Helped End the Cold War

Secrets haunt the still-classified Operation Ivy Bells, a daring Cold War wiretapping operation conducted 400 feet underwater.

It's the summer of 1972 and the U.S. is in the middle of pulling off the most daring, covert, and dangerous operation of the Cold War. Only a few months before, the signing of SALT I (Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty) limited the number of nuclear missiles of the world's two largest superpowers. Yet even with this well-publicized US/Soviet d?tente in place, a submerged American submarine rests mere miles from the Russian coastline.

At the bottom of the Sea of Okhotsk, the U.S. nuclear submarine Halibut silently listens to the secret conversations of the Soviet Union. With the Kremlin completely unaware, Navy divers emerge from a hidden compartment (referred to as the "Bat Cave") and walk along the bottom of the sea in complete darkness, wiretapping the Soviet's underwater communications line.

"Voters in Georgia head to the polls today for a special primary election for an open seat in the U.S. House of Representatives."

Other voters in Georgia looked at the slate of 18 candidates (5 D's, 11 R's, 2 I's) and simply couldn't find any of them that they hated least. But, ultimately might just use the vote as a good excuse to leave work early today.
