Yes, in America in 2014 Bare Hands And Feet Were More Often Fatal to Americans than "Assault Weapons"
When The New York Times last year in a front-page editorial called for a full ban and confiscation/buyback on what they claimed they could, somehow, easily define as "assault weapons," I explained that the problem they were trying to solve at enormous expense in both money and the civil unrest that would arise in America from the attempt to fully remove an almost universally peacefully used object from millions of Americans hands amounted to around 2 percent of U.S. homicides.
The entire category of "rifles," of which the ones people want to ban because of their appearance and/or similarity to "military" weapons are just a portion, were used in 248 homicides in 2014.

The Marginal Revolution blog yesterday provided some more interesting context of what that number means comparatively in terms of all the FBI's data on instruments of murder in 2014, with the sums added up conveniently.
It might also be interesting that the whole number of rifle homicides has plummeted by 32 percent from 2010 til 2014, rather than being a growing crisis.
At any rate, outweighing rifles as an entire category in terms of whole numbers of murders in which they were used in 2014 in America are: Knifes, at 1,567; Blunt objects such as clubs and hammers at 435; and what the FBI calls "Personal weapons" and then defines as "hands, fists, feet, etc." at 660.
Well, nobody needs hands.
Jacob Sullum summed up well that the "assault weapons" so vilified recently are not a uniquely destructive weapon in practice in America.
More Reason on "assault weapons."
UPDATE: Commenters seem to want to assume that the "type not stated" category might be outrageously more overweighted toward rifles than are the known categories, and then weighted toward that subcategory of rifles that frightened people call "assault rifles."
In the known homicide data, rifles account for about 1/22 of the number of homicides as do handguns. I assumed lacking other evidence that the ratios would likely be roughly equal, meaning we could likely assume around 89 might be added to the "rifles" count, again a far larger category than the scary ones people want to ban.
One would have to assume that for some reason the "type not stated" is in fact mysteriously weighted toward rifles, and among that category "assault weapons," at a level four times that in the listed categories to get rifles—again, a larger category—to equal hands and fists as a murder tool.

Yes but how does that stack up against orbital bombardment cannons?
My best friend's ex-wife makes $94/hr on the laptop. She has been unemployed for 6 months but last month her income with big fat bonus was over $14000 just working on the laptop for a few hours. I work through this Website.. Read more on this site._____________ http://www.earnmore9.com

Cut off one hand and one foot and you can cut that rate in half.
+1 Flesh Wound
But if my left hand offends me, and I cut it off - and then my right hand offends me, what am I to cut it off with?
I suspect that 7 poisonings and 62 narcotics doesn't begin to reflect the true number of "hot shot" homicides.
Without knowing the breakdown of the "Firearms, type not stated" category, there's no way of knowing if this statement is true or not. Why go for the sensational, but unproveable, description when there's plenty of defensible ways of making the same point with this data?
My immediate thought, too.
Something tells me that the distribution within that category will look a lot like the distribution within the category where the type was stated. The "type not stated" is generally used when the weapon was not recovered or could not be otherwise narrowed down. A recent statistic for New York showed 9mm parabellum to be the predominant caliber used for murders. Due to the number of weapons both handguns and longarms that use that caliber, a shooting where the weapon was not recovered cannot narrow down between the probable handgun and the potential carbine.
Wait, why am I answering stormy at all?
Do you really think that if an "assault weapon" was used it would not be stated?
That's why I described the statement as "unproveable" rather than wrong. I suspect it is actually a true statement.

Has anyone considered the common denominator here? Murder. That's what they should be banning.
Anyway, Foot of Etiquette is who you have to watch out for.
Murder most foul.
Why not murder all foul? And have chicken pot pie afterwards.
Murder by death to be more specific.
Killed by death
Killed by Death
And blunt instrument....
...Warty, izzat u?
It's not about facts it's about opportunity. The left are incrementalist who believe in never letting a tragedy go to waste. It's oppsression by opportunity. Every time there is outrage over some shooting, they see it as an excuse to call for "common sense" regulations. That's all they want are these one or two things. Then when they get those all they'll want is one or two more "common sense" regulations the next time and so on. They think these guns are easy pickings because they look "scary" to your average ignorant old woman and pussy man.
They are convinced that fewer guns = safer country. Irrelevant who's holding them.
Any step taken to reduce the number of guns in circulation is seen as a positive.
There's no rationality to it, just emoting.
Except for their private security people.
"Any step taken to reduce the number of guns in circulation is seen as a positive"
Disarm the piggies.
You got it. It makes practical sense to not cave on assault weapons so they'll be the target of outrage and the banners won't move onto something else. If they do manage to ram an assault weapons ban down our throats they'll move onto pistols and shotguns. It's what they do and they never stop.
What almost funny if it wasn't infuriating is that the last assault weapon ban didn't ban anything. It just forced a couple minor cosmetic changes on manufacturers. They really are that stupid. I almost wouldn't care all that much about the non-ban ban except as we just stated it would then be something else.
But that was just exploiting a loophole!
("Loophole" being prog-speak for obeying the letter of the law, but still doing things they don't like.)
Well, to be fare 😉
They have to call for "common sense" regulation. After all, they can't say, "Here's a law that would have prevented this event that we're so worked up about." Because they don't propose laws that would do that.
The present case is no exception. The killer passed two NICS checks, wasn't on either the no-fly list or "terrorist watch list," and as a security officer would probably be exempt from an AW ban.
"Common sense" = "We want to disarm good guys. Disarming bad guys is hard."
So, my company finally bought me a new phone, and it is not a windows phone, thank God. But now, I've forgotten how to use android.
How can I get the URL for videos? Do I have to uninstall the YouTube app?
You go to settings and turn on a feature called "Airplane Mode"
Are they youtube videos that you want to share?
Cause if so, while the video is playing you click in the video window and a forward arrow will apper and you click that and then copy link.
Thanks all for your helpful help and sarcastic sarcasm. H&R: keeping it real.
I had to go sarcasm, I avoid mobile video because I don't have much in the way of monthly data.
I don't actually watch the videos people post here. My smartphone browser doesn't auto-play Youtube videos.
Don't you have a teenager around somewhere?
^This. I left my Iphone on the couch one night while I took a shower. When I got out, my 3 year old was watching her favorite anime on youtube on it. She had never used it before and there was no history for her just to click on. No idea how she did it.
You don't have it locked?
He did, the code was "12345"
That's amazing! I have the same combination on my luggage!
Not at the time. Had changed from Android and didn't know how to use it myself yet.
Your mistake was using an IpHone.
View Youtube in your browser, not the app.
Exactly, click open in new tab.
First you get a box of tissues.
This is why i play life as a Melee build.

Crusty's going to be disappointed.
I think kids would rather have that bug blaster.
Does this mean I have to register my hands and feet as deadly weapons?
Don't give the government any ideas.
Depends on how bad they smell
First, fill out the form listing all the knives you own, and then on page 2, list all tools you own which might make competitive with with a licensed builder.
I used to hear what I assume must be a urban myth, that in California or someplace if you were a black-belt in certain martial arts you had to register your hands as deadly weapons.
Our youngest daughter is a 3rd degree black belt. Someone in the college town she lives in suggested that the town had such a law and that she should go to the police and ask if she had to register.
Her reply was more polite but amounted to "fuck off, slaver."
I'm so proud.
Dead guy finally gets recognition for Civil War service
Is that you, Eddy?

Any addendums welcome.
What about flame throwers? I don't see flame throwers on the list. I could have sworn murders by flame throwers are on the rise. Man, flame throwers.
Rufus, do you want a flame thrower?
Flamenwerfer
It werfs flamen!
Thanks for the clarification re: 'type not stated'.
I do have one other question - these are listed as 'homicides' but homicide covers a huge amount of territory (any killing of a human being) so, is there any reliable breakdown of the numbers that would make clear whether this table is listing all *homicides* by weapon or just all *murders* by weapon.
Homicide covers murder, manslaughter, negligence, justifiable homicide, etc while for our purposes it would be primarily murder that we're interested in. I know the table lists 'murder victims' - but these agencies have a long history of muddying the waters when it comes to defining what they're counting.
Ah, looking deeper - they do include 'justifiable homicide' in these numbers. Table 14 (law enforcement) and table 15 (private citizen).
So, drop 55 and 200 off the 'Rifle' and 'not stated' categories respectively.

"Nobody needs hands."
Don't give them any ideas, Doherty.
Next thing you know, the right to bear arms with those useful hand thingies on the end will belong exclusively to the National Guard, i.e., militia, because living, breathing constitution.
having two whole hands while some people have none is unfair. and remember how your parents always told you how fair life was?
