Friday A/V Club: Time-Traveling Beatles Battle the Taxman

With a little help from their friend Robin Hood

Sometimes a rock band makes it so big, it gets its own Saturday morning cartoon. The Beatles aired on ABC from 1965 to 1969, and while the group didn't have much to do with producing the series—they didn't even play themselves—they did provide the songs. Since our taxes are due Monday, I thought I'd share the show's take on "Taxman," in which the boys meet Robin Hood:

Pffft, the Beatles. Musicians-turned-actors. The Monkees were actors-turned-musicians and that’s a hell of a lot harder to pull off. Put any big name on a TV show and people will tune in to watch – but try getting people to go out and buy an album.

Coincidentally, I read just a couple days ago that Vonnegut “sold Saabs,” and I assumed he was a salesman. But according the Wikipedia, he actually opened the first Saab dealership in America. I now have yet another biography to put on my reading list.

Love Vonnegut’s work but had no idea he opened a car dealership, haha. But now that you mention it, a Vonnegut biography would be an extremely interesting read …

I remember these cartoons being as unwatchable as the Three Stooges cartoons. Probably the same production company, but I’m too lazy to find out.

I must be in a blackout area. But two observations:
1. Those are not “our” taxes, paleface. The government politicians I vote against wrote those laws.
2. The Rolling Stones told the Queen and Labor to shove it in 1971, and moved to “Gimme Shelter” France for a less extortionate tax rate.
