The Coldplay/Beyonce Super Bowl Halftime Show Was Surprisingly Political

Black Lives Matter and LBGT imagery ran throughout America's most-watched 12-minute concert.

You may have missed it entirely (with milquetoast snooze-rockers Coldplay billed as

Bey by the Bay
Youtube

the headliners, no one would blame you), but yesterday's Super Bowl halftime show included some striking political flourishes.

Chris Martin and company warbled through a short medley of their LITE-FM hits before Beyonce and a gaggle of dancers clad in Black Panther-style berets burst onto the scene, performing a verse from her new song "Formation." At one point, Queen Bey and crew formed an "X" on the field, in an apparent nod to Malcom X.

A segment of the music video for "Formation" features a young African-American boy in a hoodie raising his hands before a line of militarized police, followed by a shot of a graffiti spray-painted wall reading "Stop Shooting Us." However, it should be noted, the lyrics to the song itself are strikingly apolitical.

Prior to the game played at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA (not far from Oakland, where the Black Panthers were born), Beyonce's dancers were photographed holding their fists in the air in a 1960s-style Black Power salute, with one dancer holding a piece of paper reading "Justice for Mario Woods," a reference to the man whose shooting death at the hands of San Francisco police drew widespread attention late last year.

Though Queen Bey earned some fawning adulation for her performance, naturally there was some pushback from the usual suspects. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said on Fox and Friends this morning that "it was really outrageous that [Beyonce] used it as a platform to attack police officers who are the people who protect her and protect us, and keep us alive."

The erstwhile "America's Mayor" added:

I mean this is a political position, she's probably going to take advantage of it. You're talking to middle America when you have the Super Bowl, so you can have entertainment. Let's have, you know, decent wholesome entertainment, and not use it as a platform to attack the people who, you know, put their lives at risk to save us.

Conservative writer and noted advocate of internment camps Michelle Malkin expressed her pearl-clutching horror at the use of the word "Negro" among Beyonce's lyrics:

Cuz nothing brings us all together better than angry @Beyonce shaking her ass & shouting "Negro" repeatedly. #sb50 pic.twitter.com/70ouQLwfzs

— Michelle Malkin (@michellemalkin) February 8, 2016

Never one to miss an opportunity to stoke the fires of the culture wars, friend of police unions and IRA terrorists Rep. Pete King (R-NY) issued a statement today, which read in part:

Beyoncé may be a gifted entertainer but no one should really care what she thinks about any serious issue confronting our nation. But the mainstream media's acceptance of her pro-Black Panther and anti-cop video "Formation" and her Super Bowl appearance is just one more example of how acceptable it has become to be anti-police when it is the men and women in blue who put their lives on the line for all of us and deserve our strong support.

Bruno Mars was there too, for some reason,

Make America Rainbow Again
Twitter/RubyRoseLover0

but Coldplay concluded the 12-minute spectacle with a massive participatory effort by the audience holding up placards forming a stadium-wide rainbow and the words "Believe in Love." This imagery was widely interepreted as a celebration of nearby San Francisco's legacy as America's LGBTQ mecca.

In what might be a case of squeezing political meaning out of a moment where little exists, The Daily Beast's Kevin Fallon wrote that Lady Gaga's pre-game rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner was "campy, theatrical, and queer-as-hell" and "a sign of the times."

Fallon didn't really offer much evidence that this moment was "queer-as-hell" other than the fact that Gaga is a LGBTQ icon and was dressed in a red sequined pantsuit. In fact, Fallon even conceded her performance was "earnest" and "traditional," but supposedly just by virtue of this international superstar performing at America's most watched and macho event, the moment held important significance to Gaga's "Little Monsters."

That's how it goes, sometimes people see politics everywhere as an excuse to feel outraged or aggreived, on other more rare occassions, they see hope.

There's something uniquely awful about NARAL.

I thought that ad was uniquely awful just from the perspective of taste.

With all due respect, most Doritos ads are awful.

They don't really seem to understand what the word humanizing means. If I die I will be a dead human. My corpse will not suddenly change or lose its species. Infants, zygotes, fetuses, and embryos are the same way. They are a human separate from their mother. It's a dumb losing argument to say other wise.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

Here, something to sink your teeth into

Median income would soar by more than $22,000. Nearly 26 million jobs would be created. The unemployment rate would fall to 3.8%.
Those are just a few of the things that would happen if Bernie Sanders became president and his ambitious economic program were put into effect, according to an analysis given exclusively to CNNMoney. The first comprehensive look at the impact of all of Sanders' spending and tax proposals on the economy was done by Gerald Friedman, a University of Massachusetts Amherst economics professor.

"We keep raising raising and raising the minimum wage but the bottom quintile are still at the bottom 20% of income earners!"

Well duh, it because of the stinking 1%ers. Will just take all their money, distribute it out evenly, and that will fix the problem for once and all. Feel the Bern!

      2. Bubba Jones   9 years ago

Is that because it would change how we calculate median income?

        1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

I think you're hovering around the core issue.

          1. Frankjasper1   9 years ago

Isnt he the same guy that thinks berniecare would save all this money despite offering more via govt monopoly?

        2. JWW   9 years ago

The $89,000 median income won't seem like much when bread is $100 a loaf.

          1. Chip Chipperson   9 years ago

But... $15 minimum wage! Higher median income! We'll all be rich!

If bread is $100 a loaf, that's clearly the fault of the greedy bread corporations for arbitrarily raising prices so they can buy gold plated yachts and private 747s.

      3. Rich   9 years ago

Uh, huh. And what will Gerald do when his predictions don't pan out?

Median income would soar by more than $22,000.

Dear god. If only we implemented bernie's vision we would be a powerhouse!

      7. Frankjasper1   9 years ago

So basically dont take cnn money seriously anymore?

        1. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

Yeah, you definitely don't want the reporting on the propaganda circulated by campaigns.

          1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

It's faster. I have to do a whole bunch of analysis and fact checking, or I can just reprint this thing in my inbox that the sanders campaign already did all the fact checking.

            1. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

You can't "fact check" something like this. They should absolutely have put it out as an exclusive just like they did.

          2. Frankjasper1   9 years ago

Sorry i don't understand. CNN money from reading the article seems to be on board...the good stuff far out weighs the tempered expectations

5.3% Annual GDP growth, full employment, poverty havled, 35% increase in median income AND a budget surplus? Seems legit.

She tends to open her eyes wide like a crazy lunatic whenever she wants to give more emphasis to her words, especially at the end of her speeches.

Not that she's completely nuts. Her book Who Built That: Awe-Inspiring Stories of American Tinkerpreneurs on which she gives a well-deserved nod to innovators and entrepreneurs is quite good. She gave a very entertaining presentation of her book back in May, in front of the Young America's Foundation, which was televised on C-SPAN 2. Her stance on immigration is... ironic, being an immigrant herself.

    2. Irish ?s ESB   9 years ago

Incidentally, there are an awful lot of personal attacks in this post that have nothing to do with the subject. Why are Michelle Malkin and Peter King wrong just because they're horrible people in other respects?

I can understand why conservatives would be upset that an apolitical sports game they're watching with their families ends up with pro-leftist messages embedded within it. The left forces politics into a non-political scenario (which libertarians should dislike since it's yet another example of The Politicization of Everything) but for some reason conservatives get attacked when they complain about this inappropriate left-wing behavior.

Not to get all Eddie on everyone, but why is it that when conservatives play defense in the culture war they're treated like they're the aggressors?

Because the left in this country are like my mother: a perpetual victim class that can't conceptualize any other way to exist.

Hitler had a dog and was a vegetarian. So there's that working to buttress your argument.

      5. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

Not to get all Eddie on everyone, but why is it that when conservatives play defense in the culture war they're treated like they're the aggressors?

Because attempting to suppress cultural choices is anti-libertarian. I mean, "conservatives playing defense" is what conservatives do; if they were playing offense they'd be reactionaries.

        1. Irish ?s ESB   9 years ago

How is saying "It annoys me that my political views were attacked in a supposedly non-political half-time show" an attempt to suppress cultural choices? It's consumers complaining about the product the NFL put out.

This is more like when conservative Christians try to defend their religious rights and get treated as if they're attacking other people.

          1. This Machine   9 years ago

            Forget it, man. She's rolling.

          2. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

"It annoys me that my political views were attacked in a supposedly non-political half-time show" an attempt to suppress cultural choices?

The part where it's "supposedly non-political" is complete nonsense. What they're actually saying, just like everyone who does this sort of thing, is "I want you to represent my political values instead of someone else's."

            1. Illocust   9 years ago

It's a football game half time show. It's meant to be musical entertainment. There is no need to talk politics in it. Flashy effects, decent music, and a good routine is all anybody is asking for. They could sing about bloody apples and it would be fine if they got those three things. Inserting politics is just a way to push the damn culture war where it doesn't need to be. Look at bloody Lady Gaga. She got why she was there, and what the purpose of her performance was.

              1. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

If you think what you are seeing is apolitical, it's almost certainly because you share its politics.

                1. LynchPin1477   9 years ago

So choosing not to inject politics into something is itself a political choice?

If that's true then literally every waking moment of my life is political.

No so much taking sides, but I'm not buying your argument Nikki.

                  1. MarkLastname   9 years ago

The personal is political. If you don't like the idea of pro football primarily as a means to worship homosexuals and pay homage to black supremacists, you may as well just put on your SS uniform Mr. Himmler!

And for the record, I hate football. But how is his any better than, say, using he superbowl to as an opportunity to make tens of thousands of people pray to Jesus, hero worship the military and police, and pay homage to the confederacy? Why is the latter distateful, the former "hope"? Were the black panthers libertarian?

Why does the fucking halftime show have to represent any political values at all? I don't recall anyone demanding more Jesus be included when the Dire Straits or Rolling Stones or even Katy Perry performed? Why not just go that route?

But no, when Beyonce puts on a fucking Black Panther themed halftime show, everyone needs to shut up and clap, otherwise they're... what, exactly? Racists? Cultural imperialists?

I just don't understand the argument -- especially a supposedly libertarian argument -- against the people who are expressing a negative opinion of a radically left-wing performance during the fucking Super Bowl.

Seriously, this is an actual statement of privilege.

"Things that are traditional are apolitical." Fucking a, people.

        1. Irish ?s ESB   9 years ago

No, songs without political opinions forced into them are apolitical. A song that didn't involve pro-black lives matter messages would be apolitical.

You can't seriously be arguing that I'm supporting tradition for tradition's sake when clearly I'm supporting apolitical half-time shows because it's ridiculous that everything needs to be politicized.

Hey, remember the time an NFL announcer went on a tangent about gun control before a game? If I criticized that, would you argue it was a statement of privilege or would you understand that I'm criticizing politicizing football?

I'm not arguing that at all. I'm suggesting you are calling things apolitical because you can't see the politics in them.

            1. Chip Chipperson   9 years ago

Please explain the politics of Katy Perry's performance last year, or the Dire Straits the year before. Show me all the politics I'm missing in them.

              1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

Obviously they are white, and you are white, and they are hetero, and you are hetero, therefore everything you saw was reinforcing your white-hetero view of the universe, while excluding - and therefore oppressive to - everything non-white and non-hetero.

If this still does not convince you it is possibly because you possess the foolish assumption that "everything not-inclusive of X is therefore Opposed to X". Which is something you really need to educate yourself on. We however cannot enact that labor for you.

                1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

gack. well i messed that up.

it was supposed to be "Everything not-inclusive of X isn't therefore also necessarily Oppressive to X"

that's what i get for allowing distant memories of po-mo lit-theory classes to re-emerge

The fact that there were no black panthers on stage was clearly racist, and the absence of rainbow flags is homophobic.

Nikki apparently subscribes to the increasingly popular notion of 'negative bigotry', wherein, simply by failing to fawn over and specifically celebrate X-group of people for a moment of your life, you are oppressing them.

Were you're chips and salsa not rainbow colored? Clearly you hate gays, probably why you'd complain if the stores only sold rainbow colored chips for the superbowl, because you just don't see 'the politics' in regular non-gay-rights celebrating chips.

In other words, we are now at a point where the mere absence of progressive political proselytization is 'conservative.'

                1. Remnant Psyche   9 years ago

You got it. This is what happens when a victimhood-obsessed cult of identity politics runs out of obstacles. Normal people would be happy to see a fairer, happier world. These nuts invent new, minuscule "injustices" to rail against.

      7. Citizen X   9 years ago

Easy there, Irish. We all know you're just mad about the blacks.

      8. Calidissident   9 years ago

Malkin's tweet sounded more like a "get off my lawn!" sort of deal than a criticism of politics. And King's insistence on calling anything condemning police misconduct "anti-cop" merits his inclusion. I don't necessarily disagree otherwise. The Super Bowl is a sports game after all. At the same time, it's largest American audience you can reach in any given year, so I understand why people who want to take advantage of that to address an issue they believe to be very serious.

        1. Calidissident   9 years ago

*To clarify, I'm not defending it, but I get why people want to capitalize on it.

I had heard that she was going to politicize her act, but to be honest, her whole piece just sounded like a lot of unintelligible grunting. Pretty much confirmed my opinion of her as a glorified Vegas showgirl without any real talent other than nice tits and a jelly ass.

    3. generic Brand   9 years ago

It's rich when conservatives whine about politicizing the NFL/Super Bowl because they would be the first ones to be upset over de-politicizing the Super Bowl by removing the national anthem, fly-overs, and that stupid giant flag at the beginning of the game. The game is already highly politicized, but when it's the opposite side's politics, suddenly it's unacceptable.

      1. XM   9 years ago

Singing the national anthem before a game isn't "politicizing" it.

      1. The Immaculate Trouser   9 years ago

I didn't realize that the American flag was a political, rather than a national, symbol -- ditto the rest.

Could care less about the presence of all the pomp and ceremony, but Malcolm X, Black Panther and gay marriage allusions are obviously political in a way that an American flag (which I have hanging next to my Puerto Rican flag, despite not being in any way conservative) is not.

        1. Winston   9 years ago

Also the reason that sporting events have the national anthem played at all games is because of WWII when FDR was in charge and in the big cities run by Democrats so you can't blame that on "conservatives".

          1. MarkLastname   9 years ago

Well, see, he was progressive when he passed the New Deal, but was conservative when he did that; he was also of course being conservative when he put Japanese people in internment camps.

          2. Professor Woland   9 years ago

Conservatives often embrace what was progressive. The Pledge of Allegiance is pinko propaganda, but it's not the liberals who want kids to say it at school.

      1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

You think Anthony Fisher is speaking for "The Right" when he describes a Beyonce track as "Strikingly apolitical"?

my point was that there's nothing 'striking' about the obvious vapidity of Beyonce lyrics. Looking for political content there would be like expecting anti-oxidant benefits from a Twinkie.

        1. EMD   9 years ago

I think I'll go invent some raspberry Twinkies.

        1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

          Billy Bragg once said =

""Phil Collins might write a song about the homeless, but if he doesn't have the action to go with it he's just exploiting that for a subject. ""

which is more or less my same point about the utter absence of any real 'political' content to Super-Bowl song&dance; numbers.

        1. Apatheist ?_??   9 years ago

I'm not saying that Coldplay are better than The Who or ACDC or whomever, but The Who and The Rolling Stones among others were fucking terrible, and being terrible in the Superbowl halftime show is a pretty low bar.

If they are going to have one at all they should stick to some popstar putting on a ridiculous performance like Katy Perry or Beyonce when she headlined.

That being said, it is truly unimportant.

          1. Rhywun   9 years ago

I hate Coldplay and I'm indifferent to the other two but I have admit the show wasn't as spectacularly awful as I expected it to be. Someone called it "anodyne" - that's about right. There have been many worse ones.

            1. Apatheist ?_??   9 years ago

Yeah that is pretty accurate, it was just dull and boring. Then they just kinda tacked on Beyonce and Bruno Mars without their performances meshing in at all. When they did a montage of previous acts it really highlighted how dull this particular one was.

    1. Apatheist ?_??   9 years ago

The players should argue for a clause restricting Superbowls to low income tax states in their next CBA. I remember a similar story about Peyton Manning's pay for the New Jersey Superbowl and how he would save a ton of taxes if he retired after that game (due to having no more playing income for the rest of the tax year).

  23. Old Mexican Mighty Aggressor   9 years ago

You may have missed it entirely, but yesterday's Super Bowl halftime show included some striking political flourishes.

I missed it entirely. Based on the comments by admirers and detractors alike, I am glad I missed it entirely.

At one point, Queen Bey and crew formed an "X" on the field, in an apparent nod to Malcom X.

Not yet know if Queen Bey was remembering or nodding towards the Malcom X that once called white people "Blue-eyed devils" or the Malcom X who returned from his pilgrimage in Mecca with a far different idea. I'm putting my money on the former.

  24. The Immaculate Trouser   9 years ago

That's how it goes, sometimes people see politics everywhere as an excuse to feel outraged or aggreived, on other more rare occassions, they see hope

Or sometimes it's a pain in the ass and completely unnecessary to an event.

And by "sometimes" I mean "almost always". Politics doesn't need to be in everything, and it sure as hell has no place in the Superbowl.

    1. Derp-o-Matic 5000   9 years ago

Politics doesn't need to be in everything

For those of you who don't know, Mario Woods was another violent dimwit gangster, though somewhat older than many of the other violent dimwit gangsters who get promoted by #BlackLivesMatter. He got drugged up and slashed someone with a knife, and later was cornered by cops. He wouldn't drop the knife, despite repeated verbal orders, pepper spray, and 3-4 beanbag rounds. (SF cops don't have tasers, cuz they might kill someone.) He then moved forward with the knife, and they shot him down. 20 bullets, I think. So of course all the local progs (including some in the city government) are defending him as the latest civil rights martyr.

Half the shows on TV borrow talking points straight out of liberal playbooks. It's beyond obvious that most of these (white, ewww) Hollywood TV writers live in an echo chamber. At least one episode of any series will have the token liberal blissfully prattle on about gender pay gap, Wall Street, fracking, keystone pipelines, etc. The fact they were debunked by science or research apparently had no effect on the writers.

So I'm not surprised that the super bowl half time show was "politicized", even though I didn't see it. It's not gonna change anyone's mind, or the fact that 5,10 times as many blacks will get killed by one of their own than a crooked cop. The half time show is an indulgent mess devoid of star quality.

The left politicizes everything. It's what they do. Look at how quickly turn on the Hollywood machine that propagandizes on their behalf because the nominees were too white for 2 years.

    1. Remnant Psyche   9 years ago

It's more than just the effect of an echo chamber writer's room. There are organisations that exist only to place leftist political messages and narratives in entertainment. Look up the Norman Lear Center for an example.

    2. Lorenzo Zoil   9 years ago

The real elephant in the room is the undeniable fact that is gang related crimes and killings. This is the big problem. It is also being drowned out by the incessant screeching noise coming from so called activists. The war on drugs has created the environment for and power of these criminal organizations that have become active subcultures. This is a problem that isn't going away soon, and it isn't going away until the war on drugs does.
