Rejecting Gun Control, Jeb Bush Calls for Gun Control
Like Obama and Clinton, the former Florida governor wants to "take rights away from law-abiding citizens."

During last night's Republican presidential debate in North Charleston, South Carolina, moderator Maria Bartiromo asked Jeb Bush whether, in light of the massacre at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston last June, he could support "tightening standards for not only who buys guns, but those who sell them." The former Florida governor correctly noted that Dylann Roof, the man charged with murdering nine people at the church, was able to buy the gun he used from a federally licensed dealer because the FBI did not flag him as disqualified (based on a drug arrest indicating he was an "unlawful user" of a controlled substance). "In this particular case, the FBI made a mistake," he said. "The law itself requires a background check, but they didn't fulfill their part of the bargain within the time that they were supposed to."
Bush is right that the problem was bureaucratic error, as opposed to inadequate "standards" for gun buyers or sellers. He nevertheless seems to agree that "tightening standards" is a good idea. He said Congress should "begin to deal with the process of mental health issues so that people that are spiraling out of control because of mental health challenges don't have access to guns." Federal law already bans gun ownership by anyone who has been subjected to court-ordered psychiatric treatment, regardless of whether he was deemed a threat to others or merely a threat to himself. So when Bush talks about "people that are spiraling out of control because of mental health challenges," he presumably means to cast a wider net, which would ensnare many innocent Americans who would never use a gun to hurt anyone.
Bush criticized President Obama and Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, saying their "first impulse" is to "take rights away from law- abiding citizens." But that is what happens when the law says someone is never allowed to own a gun because at one point in his life a psychiatrist and a judge thought he might be suicidal. If Bush wants to loosen the criteria for prohibiting gun ownership, so as to capture people who are deemed to be "spiraling out of control" but do not meet the legal standard for commitment (which is typically the case with mass shooters), that means he, like Obama and Clinton, wants to "take rights away from law- abiding citizens."
In fact, Bush and Obama see eye to eye on mental illness as the mark of a murderer. "That's a serious issue that we could work on," Bush said. "Republicans and Democrats alike believe this."
It's true! Bush's gun-grabbing inclinations probably won't endanger the "A plus rating [from] the NRA" that he bragged about last night, because the NRA seems to agree that people with mental illness have no Second Amendment rights. After the 2012 Newtown massacre, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre demanded "an active national database of the mentally ill," which he argued would help prevent such crimes. Even if we assume that LaPierre's database would not include everyone who has ever qualified for a psychiatric diagnosis (i.e., nearly half the population), there is no practical way to distinguish between the few angry or troubled oddballs who will end up committing mass murder and all the rest. Any attempt to do so would inevitably "take rights away from law-abiding citizens."

"NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre demanded "an active national database of the mentally ill," which he argued would help prevent such crimes."
This is my problem with the NRA, besides them being unrepentend cop-suckers. It's so touchingly naive for Wayne to believe that HE wouldn't forcibly be put on that list - should it be established - by the next Democrat administration...
Also they are quick to blame the 1A (rappers, video games) when convenient.
Well, FA, I have come to see that lately as their favorite TWOFER. They get to call for the abrogation of TWO of your natural rights for the price of one with certain incidents. It's like proggie coupon-day!!!
I think in their eyes they need to propose a "solution" or one they don't like will be forced on them. Many are social conservatives and don't like that music anyway. Blaming that kills 2 birds with one stone. You get to propose an alternate solution that just happens to involve banning something you detest.
This is why I am not a memeber. They are too quick to "compromise" on "reasonable, common sense" gun control measures.
I've been a member of the Second Amendment Foundation for a long time - the NRA is frequently (and correctly) referred to as the nation's largest gun control lobbyist. The 2AF actually started as the CCRKBA - The Citizen's Committee For The RKBA - as a lobbying effort to get the 2nd recognized as an individual rather than a collective right, which SCOTUS has only recently done. The CCRKBA is still the lobbying arm of the 2AF so if you join 2AF just be forewarned that with a name like Citizens Committee and their Minuteman logo, Mo Dees and his buddies down at the SPLC already are onto you.
My own impetus for joining was the support the NRA gave to the Brady Bill with the usual expected lame-ass excuse of "well, this way we had some influence on what went into the bill and this compromise was the best we could do and it kept them from passing something even worse." Sounds exactly like the same reasoning some libertarian-ish people I know use when they urge me to vote GOP when it actually gets down to Election Day.
And didn't the NRA fight against the SAF in bringing what ended up being the Heller decision?
Their little propaganda magazine was/is awful. The essays devoted to our Heroes in Blue could be used in a pinch when ipecac wasn't available, though.
yeah, but lets face it, when the wonderful, do-gooding, nice folks running our country dumped all of the inmates of the insane asylums into the streets, how many of the mumbling people living in their own waste, inside of the pants they've been wearing for weeks, or months, have near and close fellow "patients" living with a loving Mom like Roof, or living with fellow Dorm - mates who want nothing to do with "the freak." Is the answer "mental hygiene" police? Good lord! No!
But that's what generates poll results about "nuts buying guns" and shooting up this or that place. Thus Wayne s "list." So whats the answer? At least when a cop notes a "looney tune" when going about his day, he actives by voice his dispatcher to say "got one." The dispatcher asks for face, name and address. that much at least. Follow up by somebody. Who? Hey, welcome to the laboratory of democracy. Cali will send a Dem party official with a sign up sheet. Others will send a Priest, a Rabbi and an Immam. Obviously, they will walk into a bar, but ya gotta start somewhere.
"The law itself requires a background check"
Actually, *most* laws should be subjected to background checks.
I'd settle for sunset provisions being mandatory.
Not just background checks, sunset laws and accountability provisions. I want to see laws presented as a business proposal with an objective, identifiable, falsifiable statement of outcomes. Hard targets for what this law is going to accomplish and a time frame for review. Here's what it's going to do, here's how much it's going to cost, this is the pass/fail metric we're going to use to determine if the law has accomplished what we said it was going to accomplish. No more of this "We're going to spend $5b over the next 5 years on this program to help wipe out skin failure." And ten years and $25b later you point out that there are now more people with skin failure than there were when the program started. And they point out this just proves how massive the problem of skin failure is and how much more money they need for the program and just imagine how bad the problem would be if we didn't have this program. No. You said you were going to wipe out skin failure in 5 years with $5b, you failed, you're fired, shut up, get the hell out of here, we're done. The skin failure program law is hereby repealed in its entirety.
Each bill presented should have a clear statement of its constitutional authorization to be used as a basis when under review by the courts. Does the law as written fall under that constitutional authority? No, laws invalidated.
A lot of you stooooopid mammals seem determined to die on this hill.
You guys are probably going to need a bigger hill...
As others here have said, there is a big part of me that really wants Hillary (for example) to make this a centerpiece of this campaign.
That would be wonderful.
so that people that are spiraling out of control because of mental health challenges don't have access to guns
Jeb!, I look at the fact that you were up there on that stage last night and I look at the other people that were up there with you and I look at who the Democrats have got to run against whichever of you clowns get the nod and I'm suspicious this whole damn country may be spiraling out of control because everybody must be crazy if this is the best we can do in the Leader Of The Free World competition.. And then I look at the fact that they elected Obama twice and Bush twice and I realize that I must be the crazy too if I'm merely suspicious. If that's your criteria for taking away people's guns, you might as well come get 'em all because we're living in the world's largest open-air insane asylum if we're seriously considering electing people like the ones currently running.
The only way to find people who are "spiraling out of control" is to monitor EVERYONE constantly.
Feature not bug!
/Jeb!
Don't blame me. I voted semicolon.
my neighbor's half-sister makes $83 every hour on the computer . She has been without a job for 9 months but last month her payment was $17900 just working on the computer for a few hours. why not try this out
+++++++++++++++++ http://www.Wage90.Com
So she has no job but 'working' on the computer just 9 hours a day she makes all this money. Maybe my imagination is limited but only a few 'professions' come to mind. Pretty sure I'm not suited for any of them.
Depends. How big are your tits, and do you enjoy being fisted on webcam?
I wouldn't argue with a simple background check system if the Feds maintained a lawful data base of convicted violent felons and people adjudicated mentally ill and a danger to others. The onus is on THEM to run me against their data base and give a "no" if I'm on it. End of process. No 2 page form with my firearm make, model, and serial number that the FFL is absolutely required to keep forever, and is subject to random inspections. No making me sign under perjury, no personal info beyond ID (or a federal id for firearms purposes).
That's it. Otherwise piss off. But these "conservative" politicians are still showing their inner-statist when they respond to these questions.
NO restrictions on transfer or carry of firearms beyond the very very basic safety issues.
Nowhere in the 2nd amendment does it permit the government to prohibit convicted violent felons or mentally ill people of any kind from owning firearms.
Yeah, but the 5th amendment allows removal of property with due process of law
I hate it when amendments fight.
#IFeelInfringed
Rock 'em Sock 'em Bill of Rights?
But I don't think that's to the point where the government has the power to forbid you from ever acquiring another piece of property like it again.
True but I doubt we will ever have a pure interpretation of and I throw that out as a compromise. That's all.
The 14 amendment allows rights to be revoked from felons
That's in the Libertarian Party platform. All ya gotta do is vote.
He's taking the establishment Republican route, which is to give in to Democrat demands while receiving nothing in return, ? la the Paul Ryan omnibus bill.
My hands used to shake terribly, it was an inherited condition that you grow out of by your thirties. thats the back story. When I was in 6th grade one of my teachers was a former handwriting specialist for the FBI and since my handwriting was so bad due to my shaky hands she thought I needed a mental evaluation. Even after I showed her how bad my hands shake. Luckily she never made any more of it.
This was the early 70's but in todays school system would I have been forced to be evaluated and based on a simple evaluation wether positive or negative I would never be allowed to protect myself under these idiot gun grabbing ideas.
If I was in school now I'd be expelled, possibly jailed, possibly shot and definitely loaded up with medications and shoved in a corner. Or I'd frame someone else for my nefarious actions.
If a teacher pulled that shit with my kid, I would drive them out of the profession.

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.

Fortunately, Jeb is such an abject failure as a presidential candidate that nobody needs to give a rat's ass what he says.

I find it interesting that Jeb! took all the time up until this latest debate to lose the goofy smile at the end of each of his statements. He's a real slow study.
Well... isn't taking rights away from citizens what the Red Republican Party has been about since it took over from the Whigs and Federalists?
