Cop Mocks People Arrested for Consensual Sex

After arresting and publicly shaming sex workers, a Florida sheriff proceeds to cruelly mock their appearances and more to local media.

Every day around this country, women and men are arrested for essentially nothing more than trying to have sex with one another. Such charges are so myriad and so routine they seldom warrant commentary. But every now and then, some local police department or county sheriff's office develops a scheme so egregious, or makes such downright douchtastic comments about the arrests, that it deserves holding up for scrutiny and shame. So without further ado, I'd like to introduce you to the Polk County, Florida, Sheriff's Office's "Operation Naughty Not Nice."

During the five-day operation, police arrested 95 people for either prostitution (50 charges), soliciting prostitution (33 charges), or being affiliated with someone involved in prostitution (12 charges). All of the suspects were caught by interactions with an undercover officer. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd justified the operation by citing a "direct nexus between prostitution and human trafficking" and the department's commitment to "identifying victims" of this crime.

Sheriff Judd and team have such compassion for these potential victims that they immediately slapped their names and pictures up on social media and blasted them out to local news under the heading "Naughty Not Nice."

As if that weren't bad enough, Sheriff Judd proceeded to mock those arrested to the local NBC news station WFLA, criticizing everything from their appearances to their parenting skills. About an older adult sex worker arrested, Judd said:

The oldest prostitute was 60, and they say she look like she was going on 85.

About a woman whose husband drove her to meet the "client" with their two-year-old daughter in the car, Sheriff Judd said sarcastically:

She qualifies for mother of the month and she might be eligible for mother of the year.

About an alegebra teacher caught soliciting sex from an undercover officer:

I wonder how that math worked out for him. … What does your wife think about this buddy?

Judd also laughs about one of his officers messing with a man who showed up wearing a French Maid costume, seeking a sex worker to dominate him:

Being that this was a dominate-submissive thing, our detective who was absolutely brilliant said, 'OKAY, I'll be back in a second. Get down on your hands and knees,' and he did.

And another officer who participated in the stings disclosed that one of the women arrested "has an active case of hepatitis."

The NBC article concludes with Judd crowing about sex workers and their clients having to spend Christmas in jail:

Maybe we can get some of the detention deputies to hum jingle bells to you Christmas morning because you're going to be in jail eating pressed turkey if you come here to commit crime.

One can only presume that Sheriff Judd thinks he's on the moral high-ground and it's those arrested who should feel embarrassed and contrite. But the true embarrassment here is the sociopathic disregard Judd shows for the poor and disadvantaged in his community. It is Sheriff Judd, WFLA reporter Candace Mccowan, and everyone who participated in or hailed Operation Naughty Not Nice who should be ashamed.

Did he not riff on the prostitution sting in "Polk" County?

  2. SugarFree   9 years ago

Judging by the picture, I can only assume he's paid for sex. Or at least beaten some poor girl until he got it for free.

    1. Hugh Akston   9 years ago

I don't think it was a girl he was beating for free sex.

      1. Citizen X   9 years ago

Yeah, if that's not the face of a power-bottom, i don't know what is.

        1. SugarFree   9 years ago

I never said he wasn't fooling himself...

          1. Citizen X   9 years ago

Oh, right. Like he couldn't get it up and then blamed the poor girl?

          A power bottom.?

          That would be an improvement.

I think he just looks sad, in desperation in denial reaching for every dim, stuffingless sigil of ungenuine happiness. Like a huge scumbag fit to busting with tears.

"These people are victims of sex-trafficking" but also "let's humiliate these people." Does a more concise illustration of the LEO mindset exist?

    1. Episiarch   9 years ago

The first part is just the cover, the thing they sell to the public to cover their actual desire: the second part.

      1. Citizen X   9 years ago

      2. Hicks   9 years ago

I think Shakespeare asked "Why does the cop flog the prostitute for what he wishes to do?"

  4. Brochettaward   9 years ago

Someday, one of these sting operations will actually result in a bust related to actual human trafficking, right? I mean, if prostitution is the nexus point, whatever the hell that actually means, they should encounter an actual, honest to god example of one at some point...

    1. Hugh Akston   9 years ago

They sure will, and then Sheriff Chuckles will write a hi-larious tweet about it.

      1. Scarecrow & WoodChipper Repair   9 years ago

Autobiographies are the best. But he'll need a ghost writer, if the samples are his best effort.

    2. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

Well, they all get trafficked after they're busted, right?

      1. Hicks   9 years ago

Our sheriff is a young missionary,

He'll save you a blond for five dollars.
My God, how the money rolls in!!

  5. Episiarch   9 years ago

But the true embarrassment here is the sociopathic disregard Judd shows

This is who gravitates to the job. This is to be expected. Every horrific perverted incentive involved in law enforcement is like a clarion call for people like this scumbag. They can be vicious, cruel sadists all while being able to pretend they are righteous fighters for justice. And people believe them.

    1. neoteny   9 years ago

They can be vicious, cruel sadists all while being able to pretend they are righteous fighters for justice. And people believe them.

Those people believe them who envy them.

    2. Spartacus   9 years ago

As long as the qualifications for the job are a GED and a lot of pent-up rage, there will be no shortage of such people in law enforcement.

  6. Notorious UGCC   9 years ago

    1. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

Even if a suit was successful, the taxpayers pay some money while the Sheriff continues to do what he does, and turns it into a positive point for his re-election campaign.

      1. Suicidy   9 years ago

But then the plaintiff could ar least earmark some of that settlement money for a hit man. After a few years cool down period. To obfuscate motive.

        1. R C Dean   9 years ago

Or, earmark some of it for a billboard. Name and shame, my friends.

  7. Notorious UGCC   9 years ago

"Maybe we can get some of the detention deputies to hum jingle bells to you Christmas morning because you're going to be in jail eating pressed turkey if you come here to commit crime."

So, he's saying not a single one of the defendants will be able to make bail by Christmas?

  8. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

You do realize the mindset of many in law enforcement is that the laws were written by their mother and any violation of it is a personal insult. These people buying and selling sex contrary to the law is akin to pulling out your cock and tool-beating dear old mom in the town square. Would you let that personal slight go unanswered?

Also, part of being in law enforcement is generally being superior to the scum you're forced to order around and manhandle and then do paperwork about. Being superior is no fun if you can't show everyone how superior you are.

    1. Just say Nikki   9 years ago

  9. Brian AC   9 years ago

"Being that this was a dominate-submissive thing"

Ugh. One of those things that just drives me crazy: the word he's looking for is "dominant." Why is this mistake so common? You see it in almost every sports-related discussion: someone says such-and-such team was "dominate." Don't know why it bugs me so much, but it's like a giant flag of ignorance, which Sheriff Judd appears to be proudly flying.

    1. waffles   9 years ago

No, I take it back. I was trying to be funny, but I was wrong. Reading such poor writing causes tangible pain in my temples. This isn't just abuse of the English language, this is torture. So, RC, if you are one of the "accused" and you choose a jury trial, can't you claim that the police tainted the jury pool or some such?

How is this not an egregious ethics violation. As I have told my story before, here in CO a judge actually reprimanded a potential juror who said "if the police arrested him then he must have done something wrong" and she even said "Do you think the police can't lie?"

Seriously, how could a judge allow a trial in this district now?

Seattle Times is shocked... SHOCKED to discover that when the state made a huge pile of free money available, ethics and corruption followed:

One of Gov. Jay Inslee's first missions after taking office in 2013 was creation of a new fund to promote a longstanding passion: growing renewable-energy research and jobs.

The Legislature granted his wish, approving a $36 million Clean Energy Fund (CEF) as part of the state construction budget. A $15 million chunk of the fund went to "smart grid" matching grants, testing giant batteries and software that could help utilities use more solar and wind power.

But those grants have stirred a cloud of questions about the appearance of possible insider advantage and a revolving door involving two clean-tech firms and the state Department of Commerce.

At the center of the controversy are three former Commerce officials and one consultant, who all worked on clean-energy policy for the state and then wound up at startup companies benefiting as subcontractors on the smart-grid grants.
