President Barack Obama held a news conference today rejecting calls for escalating the use of military to fight the Islamic State in the wake of the attacks on Paris, though he does plan to intensify airstrikes and assistance. He also rebuffed those who are trying to resist Syrian refugees from being brought into the United States.

  • Those who don't want Syrian refugees here in the U.S. include at least 13 governors—all Republicans, so far.
  • In France and Belgium, authorities have conducted more than 150 raids to track down anybody suspected of involvement in planning the Paris terrorist attacks.
  • Here's a list of inaccurate images and information passed around on social media as truth in the wake of the Paris attacks.
  • Education Management Corporation, which enrolls more than 100,000 students at for-profit colleges in 32 states, has agreed to a $95.5 million settlement with the feds over its high-pressure recruitment tactics.
  • The Supreme Court has declined to hear a case where anti-abortion activists were denied access to documents about Planned Parenthood receiving federal funds due to a "trade secrets" exemption in the Freedom of Information Act. Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented and wanted to consider the case.

Here's a list of inaccurate images and information passed around on social media as truth in the wake of the Paris attacks.

    All duly reported by CNN?

    1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

      Hello.

    2. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

      Good afternoon, FoE.

I smashed my middle finger over the weekend, broke part of my nail which pushed into the skin and ended up getting infected. I'm on two major antibiotics and my finger's wrapped up like a mummy and i look like I'm flipping everybody off.

      Also, I can barely type.

      1. Rich   9 years ago

        Ouch.

You'll be fine in a year.

      2. Brett L   9 years ago

All those years of one-handed typing finally pay off, eh?

        1. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

I already made that joke to my wife. She said "Yeah, but then you'd be used to typing with your left hand".

          1. Brett L   9 years ago

            "I can switch hit!"

      3. MJGreen - Docile Citizen   9 years ago

Hey! I'm trying to eat my lunch here!

      4. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

I won't acknowledge your pain until I get a 'good afternoon'.

      5. Tonio   9 years ago

Ouch! Sorry to hear that, Juvie.

      6. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

        Also, I can barely type.

There's always a reason why you don't get top comment that's not your fault, isn't there, Juvenile?

      7. AlmightyJB   9 years ago

You're not supposed to do that

    3. Illocust   9 years ago

I hope this becomes a regular feature on NBC. Course it'll probably turn political if they do that, but this current version was good.

  2. Tonio   9 years ago

Whiny leftists unhappy because "teabaggers" express support for France after the attacks. There is just no pleasing these people. If the right had of said nothing, we'd be accused of being insensitive. If we'd have gloated about them having brought that on themselves, we'd have been condemned for victim-blaming.

    1. Brett L   9 years ago

Look, every pile of bodies is just a place to wave a bloody shirt for some people on every part of the political spectrum.

    2. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

      Tonio, next time TRIGGER WARN!

"TampaZeke StSean ? 2 days ago

I pointed out that Lady Liberty needs to take care of the terrorists in the United States who have killed MANY more people right here at home than were killed in France. Of course, our terrorist come in the Christian, white, right-wing conservative gun nut variety so Teabagistanis aren't concerned about them."

This is as close to peak derp as we'll ever get I reckon.

      1. RBS   9 years ago

Look, white people killed over 900 million africans during slavery.

      2. Tonio   9 years ago

Sorry about that, folks. Yeah, the comments are truly unhinged.

      3. Medical Physics Guy   9 years ago

our terrorist come in the Christian, white, right-wing conservative gun nut variety

        Like the Tsarnaevs.......

        1. Tonio   9 years ago

Forget it, Miles per Gallon, it's leftytown.

          1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

            That's not lefty-town. That's just plain bat-shit crazy.

            1. Tonio   9 years ago

Don't spend much time around actual leftists, do you Rufus?

              1. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago

He lives in Montreal - it's like telling a shark it doesn't bathe much.

                1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

On the corner of Ave. des Pine (Pine Ave.) and Park Ave just when it becomes Berri plastered on the side of the building face one of McGill university's campus for all to see is a 'Palestine Libre' fresco - and it's disgusting. Imagine being Jewish and having to watch that everyday. Sickening.

                  1. Tonio   9 years ago

Not all Jews are in lockstep with Israeli policy.

                    1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

I know. But you get the point. I guess even they may feel a tad annoyed by it?

                    2. Tonio   9 years ago

I haven't seen the mural in question. All the jews I know are very liberal, so tend to favor a two-state solution (to put it mildly).

                    3. C. Anacreon   9 years ago

Meanwhile, most of the Palestinians favor the one-state solution, the one where all the Jews are dead and they get all the land.

Hard to see why there's any conflict.

                  2. R C Dean   9 years ago

Rufus, is there a link so we can see it?

              2. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

                All. The. Time.

I like to believe they're not insane like those people. Alas, you may be right I'm afraid.

      4. Trouser-Pod (The blowhard)   9 years ago

I suppose that this is as good a place as any for this.

        Gotta love that Clickhole!

    3. MJGreen - Docile Citizen   9 years ago

Well, it is a pretty shitty, demeaning cartoon.

      1. Tonio   9 years ago

Meh. No worse than some that appear here. I'm not getting the demeaning part.

        1. MJGreen - Docile Citizen   9 years ago

It suggests that Paris is being destroyed and France needs the US to save its ass.

I'm sure the cartoonist did want to show solidarity with France and all that, but it really comes off the wrong way to me.

          1. Tonio   9 years ago

Sure, it was clumsy. "Lafayette, we are here" would have been a better reference, but one that would be lost on a majority of today's readers.

      2. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago

Look, the cartoon a subtle jab at the teabaggers.

Lady Liberty has a war boner and is orgazming over seeing Paris in flames. She's waving the rifle around because she's a deranged gun nut, and carries the backpack of white privilege on her back!

        1. Tonio   9 years ago

          Nice.

    4. wareagle   9 years ago

      Tonio,

Just remember this: the left is reflexively driven by opposition to anything its political enemies do. Your assessment is dead on; whatever side the right is on, the left - by rule - must embrace the other side.

      1. Duke   9 years ago

This right here is what drives the left. Literally. It's why their ideas and views are contradictory and crazy.

    5. Knarf Yenrab!   9 years ago

The purpose of identity politics is to enable members of Group A to feel superior to members of Group B.

That people are miserable enough to fall for political tribalism rather than reading, playing games, getting a (second?) job is an indication of how pitiful this species often is.

    6. Suthenboy   9 years ago

TEAparty members are to our homegrown fascists what Goldstien was to Germany's fascists, the wreckers to the soviets. It is bizarre how much alike all of those groups are in their mentality, tactics, and goals.

      1. Tonio   9 years ago

Emmanuel Goldstein, the enemy of the people(tm), was from Orwell's 1984.

    7. Suthenboy   9 years ago

Jesus fuck. Look at that douche's photo at the top. Cookie cutter douchebag hipster spouts SJW derp.

  3. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

He also rebuffed those who are trying to resist Syrian refugees from being brought into the United States.

He must really think they're going to vote Democrat.

    1. OneOut   9 years ago

They will as soon as possible.

  4. Brett L   9 years ago

Appropriations of state funds to a private charity are trade secrets? We're doomed.

    1. Ted S.   9 years ago

They're not just trade secrets; they're a penalty and a tax as well.

      1. Brett L   9 years ago

I forgot the State Secrets clause where anything the State doesn't want to share is a secret. As if this weren't exactly what the FOIA was set up to deal with.

        1. Ted S.   9 years ago

They'll get a redacted version with only the word "the" not blacked out.

    2. The Last American Hero   9 years ago

Maybe the trade secrets involve the use of scissors on spinal cords.

  5. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

Those who don't want Syrian refugees here in the U.S. include at least 13 governors?all Republicans, so far.

"State laws which impose discriminatory burdens upon the entrance or residence of aliens lawfully within the United States conflict with this constitutionally derived federal power to regulate immigration, and have accordingly been held invalid." 1. Brett L   9 years ago

Chalk it up to the Imperial Presidency. The Strong Man must signal in this day and age. Why miss an opportunity to blame the Feds and score some points with the base? Its not like these guys are moral leaders.

    2. DJF   9 years ago

But these are refugees not immigrants

      1. Suthenboy   9 years ago

No, migrants. I mean asylum seekers...wait...tourists?

        1. sasob   9 years ago

          1. C. Anacreon   9 years ago

            Katrina and The Waves?

      2. bassjoe   9 years ago

"Refugees" are a class of immigrants.

        1. C. Anacreon   9 years ago

You're right. You don't have to live like a refugee.

    3. Illocust   9 years ago

They can refuse to aid the president in giving them free housing or welfare benefits, though. They can go to the state all they want, but they need somewhere to stay.

    4. Pro Libertate   9 years ago

There are non-GOP governors these days?

    5. Knarf Yenrab!   9 years ago

The Constitution, namely the 14th Amendment, doesn't permit the federal government power over immigration, but citizenship and naturalization. That a state government would impose "discriminatory burdens upon the entrance or resident of aliens lawfully within the United States" has nothing to do with the federal Constitution and everything to do with the powers granted to the state governments by their own constitutions.

Not that any of this wrangling over constitutionality matters when Serious People talk about "living Constitutions" without irony, but it's important to keep in mind what the federal Constitution was intended to do and what it wasn't.

      1. Tonio   9 years ago

I'm sure there's an emanation or penumbra somewhere that says what they want it to say.

        1. R C Dean   9 years ago

And if it doesn't say what they want it to say, a few sessions with Mr. Waterboard will get its mind right.

    6. Greerg   9 years ago

It's beyond ridiculous that the president can refuse to enforce the immigration laws, then block the states from enforcing them because that would usurp Congress' authority to regulate immigration.

  6. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

...has agreed to a $95.5 million settlement with the feds over its high-pressure recruitment tactics.

Is anyone pushing higher education on the populace like the federal government?

We've been over this before, bombing is not the same as using the military.

      1. Knarf Yenrab!   9 years ago

Obama prefers the term "kinetic strike." He has been doing a lot of kinetic striking in the ME for the past several years.

This must obviously be the famous actor that the tabloids have been click baiting over the last week or so.

Makes sense. I read one of the confessions by one of his regulars that is also a porn chick by day and his Misstress by night. She was talking about the "unnamed actor" and his exploits.

She claimed he paid someone to bring trannies to him 2 or three at a time so he could pick the one he wanted.

She says he 's done about 50 porn stars plus trannies on a regular basis in the last years or so and there may be an outbreak in the porn industry.

        1. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

It's far more likely that the drug use caused it than any amount of sex caused it.

          1. OneOut   9 years ago

Sure. especially if he was sticking a needle in his body.

But if you're having that much and that type of sex it's ging to be hard not to cross polinate.

He doesn't come across as a safe sex practioner to me though.

            1. Tonio   9 years ago

No, no, I'm sure it was the Mary Jane. Don't you listen to Patrick Kennedy and John Kasich?

    2. Suthenboy   9 years ago

Poor crazy bastard. My impression is that HIV is contracted more often from IV drug use than from sex. I could be wrong. I don't run in either circle.

      1. Tonio   9 years ago

IV drug use is the most dangerous on a per-incident basis, but buttsex is far more common. Also, with buttsex the bottom is a greater risk than the top. Prevalence of anti-retrovirals (both for prophylaxis and for treatment) has slowed the spread of buttsex-related HIV in the gay community by at least an order of magnitude. At the very least.

    STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!!

We finally have a presidential candidate we can support!!!!!!

    Freddy & The Biped 2016!!!!!!!

    "My Fellow Americans..."
"Over the last 12 months, according to people who know, my modest little Facebook page has received over 500,000 comments urging me to run for President of the United States. Clearly, the time has come to consider these invitations with a measure of seriousness. And so today, after nearly thirty seconds of careful soul-searching, I'm pleased to officially announce my decision to run for the highest office in the land. And that decision is of course, no".
"Naturally, I'm flattered - deeply. But aside from my conspicuous lack of experience, (I can barely keep a TV show on the air,) I'm afraid I lack the temperament for elected office. My dog on the other hand, is not only more suited for the role, he is, according to the most recent polls - more popular than his master, and therefor, far more electable. So, I would be willing - under Freddy's leadership and guidance - to serve as his Vice President, and in that regard, your humble servant."

    - Mike Rowe

    1. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago

I don't think "Freddy is over 35 in dog years" will clear the court, though.

      1. tarran   9 years ago

I've seen the birth certificate that certifies that there was a live birth of a puppy in Scranton, Pennsylvania named Freddy. Long form. Signature of the registrar.

Anyway, since when does the Constitution matter?

    2. BiMonSciFiCon   9 years ago

Is he over 35 in dog years?

The Supreme Court has declined to hear a case where anti-abortion activists were denied access to documents about Planned Parenthood receiving federal funds due to a "trade secrets" exemption in the Freedom of Information Act.

I though that the purpose of IP was to foster innovation. I guess it was meant to hide the shenanigans committed by a federally-funded organization that kills viable human babies for profit.

    1. Brett L   9 years ago

They're technically a non-profit, so they just do it for huge executive salaries and good health insurance.

Those who don't want Syrian refugees here in the U.S. include at least 13 governors?all Republicans, so far.

Oops, WaPo says fourteen, so fifteen total. Some D governors now.

      1. Tonio   9 years ago

        1. Raven Nation   9 years ago

            2. Pompey   9 years ago

That's Skeletor's hubby's family name. The opportunistic lady hacked her hyphenated surname down to size when it was time to run for Governor. A cynical person would assume she is so quick on this refugee issue in part to compete with the incumbent, hawkish sitting lady R that's to be her rivial in the 2016 Senate election.

    2. Tonio   9 years ago

Yeah, I bet most liberals are secretly relieved at this pushback and are happy to shut up and let the other team take the blame for having said that.

Not to bag on refugees, but many don't have cash and it takes time to find a job. The strain on Medicaid alone of even 20,000 refugees win a single state would be enough for most governors to balk at the idea.

      1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

Does the U.S. government provide them with a cost of living stipend like Canada does?

        1. Brett L   9 years ago

I'm not sure. Usually, the States are responsible for administering welfare, but much of it can be billed back to the Feds. Medicaid on particular has more requirements than states receive funding for.

I read where Tronto offers them Muslim only public housing.

Any truth to that Rufus ?

          1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

Not sure. I know there's a lot of misinformation out there regarding welfare. Might be better for our resident Ontarians to answer. I'll look into it.

The US wouldn't even take in Jews during the Holocaust. Why would either of our cynical, gross political parties be in a hurry to open its arms to refugees given how much damage even one terrorist incident would inflict on their future campaigns?

      1. Suthenboy   9 years ago

The Lightbringer has no such concern.

      2. Tonio   9 years ago

The US was a very different country then. Jews were discriminated against socially, but not politically as were blacks. Jews had no trouble voting, but apparently many country clubs and neighborhoods were "restricted."

        1. Restoras   9 years ago

but apparently many country clubs and neighborhoods were "restricted."

True - and they promptly formed their own clubs and neighborhoods.

In France and Belgium, authorities have conducted more than 150 raids to track down anybody suspected of involvement in planning the Paris terrorist attacks.

    "Round up the usual suspects!"

Those who don't want Syrian refugees here in the U.S. include at least 13 governors?all Republicans, so far.

Ok, ok, 13 governors AND their spouses. At least. But that is it, so far, okay?

President Barack Obama held a news conference today rejecting calls for escalating the use of military to fight the Islamic State in the wake of the attacks on Paris

It's one of the few things Obama gets right with foreign policy. If only he followed this policy all the time.

Escalating the fight in Syria with ground troops is exactly what these pigs want. Don't fall into the trap.

    1. Warty   9 years ago

Don't we already have advisors in Syria?

      1. Brett L   9 years ago

We got out ahead of the process. We were supposed to let the Frech fight and lose first, then send advisers, then send troops. We have to go back and check the first box. What's Syrian for Dien Bien Phu?

Holy shit, Obama is no longer alone! From PM Zoolander:

We made a clear commitment in the campaign to stop the bombing mission by Canadian jets and replace it with a role for Canada that is still a serious military role, but leaned more towards training of local troops to be able to bring the fight directly to ISIL,he said, referring to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). "

I love that CBC has to translate the stupid abbreviation for him.

    1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   9 years ago

Curious. Do you bother to take part in the threads?

I don't see the difference between committing to training or actual combat missions. We're implicated either way and I'm sure ISIS will see it that way.

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is a more accurate translation of the original Arabic name, the problem being that most Westerners don't know what the Levant is. IS is the name they now self-apply in English, since they claim to have branches in many more countries.

Here's a list of inaccurate images and information passed around on social media as truth in the wake of the Paris attacks.

Misinformation Spreads on Social Media Following Paris Attacks

    I'm... confused...

How many tens of thousands of times have we seen the l33t media pass around social media as 'witness accounts' to anything from racism on college campuses to harassment of varying types while constantly extolling the virtues and empowering nature of social media... and now... NOW the media is concerned that social media is spreading misinformation because... you know anyone can just post anything on there!

    1. Raven Nation   9 years ago

Yeah, I made a parallel point on Friday when the French English language live feed was warning people not to assume the attackers were Muslim just because Twitter accounts of people at the shootings said the attackers were crying "Allahu Akbar."

Perhaps Brian Ross could weigh in with a decision?

I can't think of any commenters on this site who manage to regularly produce anything more deranged, or completely unhinged than the mental sewage you consistently squirt into your comments, Mike M. You are clearly the king of the retards.

I would congratulate you on what is clearly a difficult accomplishment, but that would require me to respect it.

So sorry I offended you. Even Hollande and the Pope, two dyed in the wool left wing international socialists, recognize that ISIS is an evil that needs to be wiped out.

Obama is a west-hating rat unlike any we've ever seen in our country. If you can't handle the obvious truth, that's your problem, not mine.

Mike M - Sorry I offended you, fuckhead.

France is America's oldest friend and ally, even when we don't necessarily see eye to eye on every issue all the time. And they've just suffered the worst attack on their own soil in several decades. We should be fighting side by side with them, or at least offering them whatever assistance they want from us.

Instead, Obama just basically gave them a giant middle finger. And the sickest damn thing about it is that he and Hollande probably agree with each other about 98% of the time. I find this just appalling.

            1. Pompey   9 years ago

Is there anything Millennials can't ruin?

Twentysomething is suspected ringleader of Paris terror attack

Abdelhamid Abaaoud, probably in his late 20s, is believed to be close to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and is likely the link between the senior ISIS leadership and ISIS operatives in Europe, European counterterrorism officials have said.

ISIS is just a name. If they weren't ISIS they would be Al Qaeda, if they weren't Al Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood.... on and on.

Fighting ISIS, or any of its other variants is meaningless. These folks have ideas about their religion and will join whatever ascendant group best fits those ideas.

  27. Enjoy Every Sandwich   9 years ago

In regards to Syrian refugees, I'm not overly concerned about "terrorist infiltrators". Not because it won't happen; it very well could. But it seems to me that ISIS is very well funded and sufficiently organized to pull off infiltration regardless of what is done about refugees. Indeed, I'm constantly hearing that ISIS is already here.

I do wonder, though, how the refugees are getting here and who is paying for it. I don't suppose that they're swimming all the way across the Atlantic. Plane tickets cost money, last time I checked. Then too I wonder what they'll do for food, clothing, shelter, etc. when they get here. That stuff costs money too.

I hear (I don't know how reliably) that the Syrian refugees who've gone to Europe are displeased by the food and the culture there. So I wonder why it is they're going to lands that are supposedly filled with horrible anti-Muslim bigots and that horrible degenerate Western lifestyle. It seems to me that there are Muslim lands close at hand they could go to. Why don't those countries want Syrian refugees?

  28. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago
