Ben Carson Wants to "Intensify" the War on Drugs
The Iowa frontrunner is spoiling for more drug war.

Presidential contender Ben Carson told Glenn Beck that he wants to "intensify" the war on drugs.
Robby Soave blogged Carson's controversial remarks about using the federal Department of Education to eradicated political bias from the academy yesterday, but elsewhere in the same Blaze interview (starting at about 1:30) the brain surgeon/book writer/Iowa poll leader reiterated his intention to double down on drug prohibition:
Beck is conducting a lightning round of questions. He asks Carson:
Beck: Do you continue the war on drugs?
Carson: Absolutely
Beck: You do?
Carson: I would intensify it.
(Reason readers may recall that our own Jacob Sullum helped usher the talk show personality onto the anti-prohibition bandwagon earlier this year.)
Then, bless his besweatered heart, Beck drops a wee, snarky little pause on the candidate and then follows up:
Beck: Let me ask you a question… <incredulous pause>
Beck: How… <more pausing to think of a nice way to phrase the question>
Beck: I mean, it doesn't seem to be working now.
Carson: Yeah well, go down to the border in Arizona like I was a few weeks ago. I mean, it's an open highway and the federal government isn't doing anything to stop it.
Beck then asks the candidate if he would legalize marijuana and Carson replies "I disagree with it." He has previously said that he considers pot a "gateway drug."
This concludes today's harshing of your buzz.
P.S. Tune into Kennedy on Fox Business tonight to hear me talk about this, Benghazi, the Kardashians, and much, much more.

Oh noes my Ben Carsons are ruined!
Carson, will never win the nomination anyway. He is another out of touch, fat cat, rich doctor. He only cares about his money and prestige. Same for most doctors. They are all money grubbing and selfish people with oversized egos.
Stem people, by and large, even if they are negro, are just too dumb to take seriously.
How does ones skin color affect the ability to be taken seriously?
Hey you take that back! Some of us STEM people are libertarian too (I know there are like five of us).
Man, that gateway drug comment and intensifying the War on Drugs comment just took him out of the running for Surgeon General no matter who wins (no one ever thought he was going to get the nomination, right?).
Physicians aren't STEM people. They're a few notches below auto mechanic and electrician.
Basically they're about the level of public school teacher. But with the license to write prescriptions for drugs the last pharma rep told them about.
They make more money than almost anyone else in society. And many could care less about the patient.
And why the fuck are you complaining about how much money he has you socialist bastard. His policies and politics suck but what you just said is even worse.
Bob K,
Why the fuck are you complaining? Greedy doctors, hospitals, dentists, and drug companies keep pushing our health insurance premiums up through the roof! But, you are probably too stupid to see that! You probably have a soft job with all of your healthcare paid for.
How stupid can evangelicals be? As if the Wars on Women, Gays and Drugs the last 50 years hasn't decimated the GOP, now Carson wants to drive the final nail into the republican party's coffin. Him and Fatso Christie are fighting over the hammer.
The GOP hasn't won the female vote in a presidential election since 1988. They've NEVER won the gay vote and I'm not even sure how many centuries it's been since they won the youth vote.
Stupid is as stupid does.
You can thank an evangelical for the end of capitalism in the USA.
IT'S ALL OVER FOLKS! And the socialists won.
As stupid as anyone else.
Unfamiliar with that one.
I am familiar with those ones.
Not sure what that has to do with the topic of the comment, considering you started out talking about evangelicals. You do realize that in this case A=/= B, right?
I had nothing to do with it. And I would love a stat, just one stat, showing that those who claim evangelicalism are worse on liberty than any other belief system.
ace -- Boy, you really need it spelled out for you, huh?
You said, "Not sure what that has to do with the topic of the comment, considering you started out talking about evangelicals."
It's the evangelicals who have been the heart and soul behind the War on Women, that war you claim ignorance of. I would be shocked if an evangelical such as yourself would allow women to have control of their own bodies. Of course you don't. You want Big Brother and Big Jesus, dictating what a woman can or cannot do with their bodies.
And of course you're against gays being allowed to marry because that's what your bible tells you. Ditto for the drug legalization issue.
By taking this insane stance that you should be able to tell others how they should live, you have driven the women, gays, and youth, as well as their supporters over to the socialists, and the socialists welcome them with open arms.
Below is your "one stat showing a vast majority of evangelicals are worse on liberty" (abortion rights) than any other belief system."
All you have to do is Google this and you'll find dozens of other "stats" to confirm my assertions as well.
http://www.cc.org/news/poll_fi.....re_prolife
And I would love a stat, just one stat showing another group to be more anti-abortion than evangelicals! Betcha can't.
They who claim revelation is a source of knowledge not verifiable exclude reason from their universe of discourse. Where reason is excluded, only force remains. It's not statistical, but deductive. Q.E.D. Now, if someone presents a statistic, I'll wager the mindless ace will claim the numbers are faked, just as I'll lay odds it'll claim the premises here are false or the conclusion doesn't follow. This is why Ayn Rand never argued with mystics any more than Patton argued with German Positive Christianity's SS troops.
I'm curious where Carson - or any of them, really - get their policy proposals. I was thinking it was probably handlers doing market research of a sort, but now I'm thinking it was the last person they talked to. Carson talked to some warrior at the border in AZ and BOOM we got a new public policy from President Carson.
Well, I was just down on the border, and I talked to border guards, Fist - and, you know, they're just terrific people - and this border guard I talked to, he said that Washington has been useless, and we need to increase the pressure. "Increase the pressure, really fight the Drug War" - that's exactly what he said to me, Fist.
And this is why my idea to build a wall and really enforce the nation's immigration laws are clearly the right thing for America. Because our politicians fail us - as this terrific border guard told us yesterday - so we need a non-politician, like me, to make America great again.
So while I know you were Trumping, it occurred to me that was also a very passable Friedman quote.
Or his staff are retards. Or he is. All these things are possible.
You know, Episiarch, you're polling at - in the most-recent CNN poll - something like 0.00001%. So you should even be commenting on this board. You and Rand Paul - and, really, who could elect someone with that hair? I mean - really. You and Rand Paul - and I love you both, truly, you're wonderful people. But you shouldn't be here. It's not helping to Make America Great Again.
Oh, and here's one of my hats....
Oh, and, please, let me do you a favor, and eminent-domain away your house for you... It really is a trashy dump, you know, dahlling... You'll thank me later for this... Let me eminent-domain it away from you, for a MUCH more tasteful parking lot for my limos! With ALL that money you'll get from the eminence of MY domain, you should be able to afford to buy some VERY nice pubicly-subsidized housing, under MY new policies, you know... Publicly-funding pubic delousing is thrown in for FREE, by the way...
"You look like a dick in that tiny jacket!"
I'm curious where Carson - or any of them, really - get their policy proposals.
Pharmaceutical sales reps.
He has a demon, lol.
Ummm... I live on the border of Mexico and California and the border patrol, homeland security, DEA (all one and the same) are EVERYWHERE. Stupid or liar? With Carson I'm beginning to believe it's both.
Have they inspected your butthole (w/o a warrant, at that) yet? If not, better get the Vaseline ready!
Hey... Did you know that the German word for Vaseline is "vienerschlider"? If you ask the Fatherland / Motherland Sicherheit fascists VERY respectfully, I am SURE that they will permit you to apply your "vienerschlider" first, BEFORE they search you!!!
We're just not derping hard enough
So he intensified the derp.
You need a derp amp that goes to 11.
NOOOOO, cant we just cut them off at 10..... i know its just a human machine interface mapping an arbitrary level of output but it would make me feel better if we did not have one that went to 11, and we all know its all about the FEELZ.
Cripes, will Republicans drop the '70s SoCon stuff? It kills them at the ballot box for huge swathes of the populace.
As does the new SoCons stuff.
So which is it? Defend your principles, or pander to politics?
Principals, not principles. Duh
Also an ironic comment coming from a person whose political ideology gets 1% in a national election.
It seems that the Libertarian Party could drop that whole "No More Free Shit" stuff that kills their chances at the ballot box as well.
Sorry for the ambiguity, referring to the OP, not your reply.
I hate to break it to you, but Papaya has never really claimed to be a Libertarian...
Bah, facts. I am trying to make comments in the interwebs. Go peddle your wares elsewhere my good fellow.
Now that bit about peddling wares.
THAT......IS........IIIIIIIRONY.
/Bender
No, I consider myself a moderate or non-dogmatic libertarian. I'm more willing to compromise with both the left and the right than I "should" be, and I think one part of libertarian dogma (open borders) is poisonous to the rest.
IOW, PapayaSF is not a libertarian and hates freedom.
In other words, he is too much of a flag waving slave.
You, on the other hand, have the wisdom to observe that Back to the Future II was not so good.
It may hurt you that LM actually agrees with your cinematic assessment, but deal with it bitch.
Last night, after the Mets had swept the Cubbies, and after I had fallen asleep in my big, comfortable recliner, I watched the damn movie, and kept thinking to myself, that fucking Canuck Cyto is right.
Speaking of Back To The Future Bernie Sanders looks like an evil version of the Doc.
Yeah, my opposition to more Islam and more poor people in a broke welfare state means I don't care about liberty.... *rolls eyes*
Compromise with the left? Is this John Boehner?
National secret ballot election, where DemoGOP count the unverifiable votes, and where Al Franken goes from KOed to landslide winner on a paper ballot recount.
Fortunately the LP need only about 5% of the vote to change the laws, and for all we are able to verify, we've prolly gotten twice that. According to the Nixon fuck-the-LP subsidy act of 1971, it takes 25% to even show up on the divvying of boodle.

There are positions in between insistence on 100% principles and pandering. There is also a matter of priorities/emphasis. Even if Carson doesn't like drugs, it's a stupid issue to emphasize. It buys him no new support, but loses him some.
I agree that you don't have to hit one extreme or the other, but if you are a traditional social conservative, you have identified yourself as someone for whom these political issues are tantamount. If you are willing to compromise a core value for the sake of votes, what good is having your ideology in the first place? It would be like a Libertarian consenting to gun control.
Not necessarily. These are all different things: being a SoCon, not wanting the government to actively attack SoCons or their principles, and wanting the federal government to enforce SoCon principles. The first two are compatible with libertarianism, and even the last can be compromised on if needed to achieve other libertarian goals.
Thing is, I doubt there are many voters who'd choose to vote against a presidential candidate for being for intensifying the drug war. The voter may not be for it, the voter is likely to be for legal marijuana in some form or respect, but hardly any voters on that side would make it a priority in judging a candidate. I'm guessing the anti- voters would make it a bigger priority, unfortunately. I think that's how most politicians judge it too, because I doubt that many are sincerely prohibitionist, but they need to appear to be so, so as to not antagonize voters who'd make it a priority.
Some other socon/trad issues may be otherwise, but not drugs AFAICT.
Of course not - the Drug War only affects other people.
Suppose it could be shown that prohibition enforcement causes financial catastrophe and severe economic depression? Even the most mindless "conservatives" still care about their retirement pensions and personal fortunes. There is a clear correlation between these things, going back to the Opium Wars, where England withdrew capital from These States over justifiable antinarcotic prohibition in China in 1837, 1840, 1857, the pure food and drug act effective in 1907, the Balkan Wars escalating into WWI after Chinese prohibition stuck fast in 1911, the prohibition crashes of 1921 and 1929 and depression, the Reagan antidrug crash of 1987, Clinton ditto of 1998, Bush ditto of 2007. What if all of these things are not mere coincidence?
The question is, is Ben ready and willing to "chip in" that last full measure to support the war on some drugs? If you know what I mean...
"Yes, I see what you are saying...."
/Butters
Between this and his idea to have the feds police ideology of college professors, It's pretty clear that Ben Carson is a fucking moron in a similar vein to the moronic Bernie Sanders.
RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a lovely vision.. Sanders/Carson with Trump as Chief of Staff. A never ending laugh fest.
Put the whole lot of them them in the White House.
Then lock the doors from the outside.
Then double lock the doors from the outside.
I was gonna tune in to watch Kennedy But... "the Kardashians"
What's wrong with the Kardashians?
Nothing a good dose of Darwin wouldn't help.
Pretty much everything. But, I guess I better get used to it since she going to be FLOTUS come 2020. Our next two Presidents are going to be reality stars. I'm pretty sure we're going to see an actual President Comocho in my life time. Not sure why Mike Judge thought it would take 500 years. Brought to you by Brawndo.
If you let Carson talk long enough, he will eventually say something to confuse or offend literally everyone.
We need to build an underground wall to stop the tunneling.
I'll see your underground wall and raise you a spherical Dome.
Put America in Orbit. It's the only way to stop the drugs, terrorists and immigrants.
It's going to take Nixon to stop the war on drugs.
Only Nixon could go to Columbia....
Sure, why not, as a black man in who grew up in a terrible neighborhood, I am sure he knows first hand how effective the drug war is. /derp
Between this and his sketchy gun rights stance, not really interested in hearing more about him.
Neurosurgeon? Maybe he should conduct an operation on himself.
I've known people who are brilliant in their fields but clue-challenged on most other things.
It happens kind of a lot I think.
Though maybe Carson really is borderline retarded and it really was God doing all that neurosurgery.
Perhaps he should be praying for Jesus to take the microphone as well, in that case.
Edward Teller swore this was true of scientists.
In my baseball league, there are two physicians. One is the nicest guy in the league, the other is the biggest asshole in the league. The biggest asshole is also a neurosurgeon. It's apparent that he started practicing on himself.
This epitomizes the yuuuuge divide between primary care and subspecialty physicians. Meanwhile, monopolistic hospital systems and their specialists/procedurists which want to be the only providers, Big Pharma with their incrementally better, hugely profitable, branded drugs that don't want anyone Rx'ing cheap generics, national chain pharmacies and their vertical expansionist plans that want to Rx themselves, and health insurance companies which want care to be unaffordable without "coverage" (but are really selling primarily contracted discounts), and their corporatist government conspirators are all trying to replace those affable, affordable, accessible, and accountable to their patients primary care physicians with employed, compliant, and marginally competent "mid-level providers" whose role is to definitively care for nothing and instead redirect and refer everything more than the simplest problems for the greater revenue generation of their masters.
Considering how tone deaf he is to the libertarian-leaning parts of the GOP, I'm becoming convinced that he might get the nomination.
How can people so smart be so stupid?
Everyone has a topic/ range of topics upon which they are emotive rather than rational. Or things that they have never taken the occasion to think deeply about.
You don't know many doctors, do you?
This Reason reader recalls having heard Glenn Beck make anti-prohibitionist statements yrs. earlier on the radio.
What is this, Alamanian's Town Hall?
Humans are social animals where millions are trying to tell other millions what to do, which is why we have fewer and fewer freedoms. Wars give the government employees more power over you. Wars create funding for the careers and promotions of the war bureaucrats. I do not use drugs and do not condone their use. However, I think drugs should be legal. I own my body and should be free to ingest what I want. If I don't own my body then I am a slave. As long as there is one terrorist there will be billions spent on the war against terrorism, paying for a million careers of government employees. As long as there is pride and patriotism, the world will be a violent place. As long as women like men in uniform, the world will be a violent place. "The pioneers of a war-less world are the youth who refuse to fight." Albert Einstein. "A man will do anything for a little ribbon on his chest." Napoleon Bonaparte
"As long as there is pride and patriotism, the world will be a violent place. "
Oh that is bullshit. I am sure Switzerland has both and they're not very violent.
Okay slaver.
OH GOOD COMEBACK
Retard
It fits, slaver.
Cyto, we know that, at bottom, you want to be free and not tethered to some nation state or some creepy allegiance to minarchism.
Although I am a retired Catholic, and hate Jesuits, I pray for your redemption with the god of LIBERTY!
Another thing, if your ass was in a sling, and you needed a bad ass advocate, you would call ME! and I would carry the day and save your ass.
The Swiss are not very altruistic. Look at William Tell throttling the Accursed Hun over taxes!
"A man will do anything for a little ribbon on his chest." Napoleon Bonaparte
Is Nappy-Boner running for president? Under whose name? Can I get a ribbon for voting for him or her? WHO does The Nappy Boner endorse for Galactic Emperor, PLEASE do tell!!!
Glenn Beck for President
Meh, between the open weeping and the 30-40 hour speeches, I don't know that he would get a lot done as Prez.
Wait a tick...you might actually be onto something.
Sad thing is, he probably still doesn't suck as bad as Trump.
The candidates this go-round are really making a good argument towards the pointlessness of democracy.
Our founders pointed out the futility of democracy long before:
"Hence it is that democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and in general have been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths..." James Madison
"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine." Thomas Jefferson
"We are a Republic. Real Liberty is never found in despotism or in the extremes of Democracy."
Alexander Hamilton
It has not been much of a war so far. Given the number of guns Obama has sold, it might be inevitable that the druggies will start shooting back. Wouldn't want to be you. ..
This is concerning. I don't think we need to be spending money in this manner. Education and health care should be a candidates main concern. Dentist Las Vegas
Is this a bot advocating for universal dentistry or something?
Yea, thanks for the heads up. Considering this is a libertarian site, your heartfelt concern for taking money from the taxpayers to fund pet projects you care about will be well received.
Follow up question on his support for the war on drugs.
Sir - where in the US Constitution does it say the government has the authority to tell people what they can or can't put into their body?
Mr Carson - It doesn't ?
Where in the Constitution does it say "All persons born" include an individual woman's insides?

Hmmm, progressive revolution? They've already had plenty and they didn't lead to progress, except for the elites at the expense of everyone else.
Maybe during this progressive revolution, you can actually go out yourselves, and try to extort individuals door to door. You can demand they give you money for whatever cause you believe in, and you can go in and confiscate their weapons too.
No wonder you folks hide behind politicians and their standing armies.
Vamp, thanks for your contributions.
Seriously, Doc? You gotta side with the drug-war-boners? Some small-government conservative you are. I hope this and that DOE flap sink your campaign now. You were one of my picks for the nomination, but now... fuck you with your own scalpel.
American doctors are coerced and bribed by their regulators. The carrot is the overcharges permitted by forbidding honest competition, and the stick--threats of indictment--crushed all opposition to Harrison Act enforcement among doctors with integrity.
http://druglibrary.org/special/king/king1.htm
The GOP is offering a black prohibitionist just like the successful looter Dems. That this one also wants men with guns to force women to reproduce or die of sepsis is icing on the cake. Recall that Republicans came up with the idea of poisoning alcohol with methanol so as to kill or blind whoever drinks untaxed alcohol.
I want men with guns to punish violations of NAP without needing taxation to do it. I have volunteered to do this on several occasions.
I can see how you could be confused...
(Not in the GOP or a fan of them. That being said, if you make a stupid statement, I often rebut it.)
Um... where was an individual not pregnant hypothetically aggressed against? Or are you counting chickens before they can even be hatched into the Lebensborn and Hitlerjugend on track to the Crusades and Heaven?
What the Bible and Constitution say:
a. Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones. (Psalm 137:9)
b. ...the free exercise thereof; (1st Amendment)
c. Section 1. All persons born or naturalized... (14th Amendment)
Rebut away, but the NAP was written by pro-choice Ayn Rand in 1947 during "The Exploiters and the Exploited" chapter of Atlas Shrugged. Now let's see you twist that into a warrant to nationalize someone's womb or to force women into involuntary servitude for Fuehrer und Fatherland.
I don't have a buzz to "harsh", and have no personal interest in illegal drugs other than the "illegal" part. It is none of the governments business what an individual chooses to do with his or her body, or who or what he or she chooses to do it with as long as a minor is not involved. All vice laws are unconstitutional and should be eliminated.
This coupled with Carson's support for amnesty ends any support for him I may have had.
Wait, wut? I haz the confuzed.
Avast thar me mateys and landlubbers! "Welcome to the matrix" 🙂 .
Do you want to be freer than you are now?
If so, the first thing you need to understand is that _no-one_ can free you, except _YOU_.
No politician will free you, nor anyone else.
Meaning, if you want to be freer than you are right now you need to stop complaining about the government, and to stop fantasizing that some new, temporary, provisional head of what is essentially a 100% criminal organization is actually going to improve your life for you.
Ain't gonna happen!
If you believe it can/will happen, then "the matrix" definitely "has" you" :-).

Iowa is where God's Own Prohibitionist party's Great Dry Hope Herbert Hoover hails from. Saddled with beer being declared a major felony just before he took office and armed with Mabel Willebrandt's use of the new individual income tax to confiscate assets and jail corporate magnates, Hoover ramped up the war on the Demon Rum. When he took office March 4, 1929, the nation was still prosperous. Then Al Capone was questioned about taxes, a judge was jailed for evasion and a bank was interrogated for liquor financing and the Stock Market crashed March 26. Another six months of intensification was all it took for the money to leave Wall Street because investors saw a Depression coming. The same thing happened in 1987 (crash and prohibition intensification), in 1998 (August 31 intensification) and 2007 (asset forfeiture makes homes worthless). This will be fun to watch.
This Iowa wannabee antichoice candidate reminds me more and more of the Landover Baptist Church of Freehold, Iowa.
So much for Carson. Since he is a (legendary) physician, I'd have thought (1) he would had some inking of when a problem is insoluble and requires a different approach, and (2) recognize that drugs are a public health issue primarily, and less a law enforcement problem.
He must be completely insane to think the solution to drugs is more SWAT teams kicking down doors (of the wrong house) and flash-banging babies.
Sickening.
flash-banging babies. - Lots more work for the Drs.
Honor dies.....
