New York Times Worried That Allowing Cubans to Have More Money Will Increase 'Income Inequality'
No, I'm not making that up
As if to unintentionally discredit the phrase "income inequality" as a meaningful indicator of human regress, The New York Times today has a remarkable article lamenting that "As Cuba Shifts Toward Capitalism, Inequality Grows More Visible." Here's a taste:
As Cuba opens the door wider to private enterprise, the gap between the haves and have-nots — and between whites and blacks — that the revolution sought to diminish is growing more evident. […]
Raising the [U.S.] remittance cap, along with allowing more Americans to visit Cuba and other steps toward normal diplomatic relations, will help "support the Cuban people," the Obama administration contends.
But some will enjoy that support more than others. Cuban economists say that whites are 2.5 times more likely than blacks to receive remittances, leaving many in crumbling neighborhoods like Little Swamp nearly invisible in the rise of commerce, especially the restaurants and bed-and-breakfasts that tourists tend to favor.
"Remittances have produced new forms of inequality, particularly racial inequality," said Alejandro de la Fuente, director of the AfroLatin American Research Institute at Harvard University.
Bolding mine, to highlight the vacuousness.
There are two main points, absent from this article, to be made about Castro-era inequality (that is, the inequality that existed long before this year, or this decade). One is that while, yes, the earnings gap within the majority of the population is smaller than that in most capitalist countries, THAT'S BECAUSE ALMOST EVERYONE IS POOR. Why, some might even say that those two facts are related!
If your goal is equality of opportunity, enforced equality of outcome is your enemy, because the kinds of strictures the state must place upon human freedom in order to produce that outcome will strangle productive economic activity. As the old saying goes, under communism, everyone has a job, and no one works. The conditions of poverty described in the article—the "crumbling neighborhoods," the miserable goods available via ration cards, barely livable state wages, jury-rigged electrical wiring and vulnerability to flooding—all of this is a failure of applied communist economics. Which is, let us never stop reminding ourselves, an economics based (in theory anyway) on reducing inequality.
Which brings us to point number two about Castroite/communist unequalness. There is no equivalent inequality in the democratic west than the inequality between a dictatorship's nomenklatura and its captive citizens. All animals are equal under communism, but some animals are more equal than others. The ones that are more equal can travel abroad, shop at stores with actual goods using salaries of actual money, and live mostly free from fear of the omnipresent Committees for the Defense of the Revolution. The less equal can have their entire families barred—not by lack of income, but through direct government order—from good schools and good jobs. They can only dream of owning such extravagances as refrigerators, cannot place an international phone call, do not dare speak freely, and cannot leave the island without escaping, just like a prisoner. Which is what they are.
Want to see some truly stomach-churning inequality? Go visit The DDR Museum sometime, and compare the sections about ordinary East German lives and those of their dungeon masters. The single most potent weapon against Cuban inequality is not somehow blocking U.S. remittances, or forcibly funneling them through Castro's benevolent equalizers, but to dismantle the Cuban police state.

It's maddening, the world we live in.
Matt, I thought we were in a libertarian moment, or upswing. How can that be when we're constantly inundated with "top men" thinking like this?!
It's all a rich tapestry, Spencer.
It's not so much that we are being inundated by "top men" thinking. It's that we've been standing up to our necks in it for the last 100 years or so.
Why are you worried about what the NY Times thinks? Last time I checked the only thing keeping it stock from being effectively valueless was its real estate holdings. Sure, there is a aging cadre of self-important twits who consider the Times Holy Writ. The same could be said for the Hearst Papers, circa 1965.
Absolutely, C.S.P.! The NYT thinks of a their own little world and wonders why the rest of the world isn't like it!
the main holding being one that was acquired via eminent domain, and hence reversible with a sufficiently ballsy federal legislature.
"when we're constantly inundated with "top men" thinking like this?!"
What's wrong with the thinking? Market activity promotes income inequality. Why would anyone object? You'd rather believe that the greater my involvement in the marketplace, the more equal my income to others? Seems like "silly men" thinking to me.
The NYT is simply testament to the idiocy of the general population.
Americans are uneducated sheep and the NYT serves to try and persuade the masses that communism is a good idea.
The answer is that americans are getting dumber by the year.
The average Cuban makes $20 per month. And America is not a capitalist country. Cubans will remain under the yoke and americans will continue to practice the current perverted form of cronyist marxism/fascism until the system collapses and then perhaps capitalism will emerge out of necessity.
Up to a point income inequality is meaningless. Most commodity items are much cheaper today - in terms of hours worked to acquire the commodity - than they have ever been. The metric that is the most important - if you must consider this type of metric - is how well does the bottom segment of the population live.
The other thing to consider is that the hyper parallel organic computer that is the market makes more efficient decisions than Top Men seeking to twiddle knobs without any real idea what the effects might actually be.
As Cuba Shifts Toward Capitalism, Inequality Grows More Visible.
As opposed to the current scenario, where the massive inequality between the inner party members are the proles are deliberately ignored by press outlets like the New York Times.
That's how it is supposed to work.
Some of The Wrong Sort of People will have more money than the people that The Right Sort of People like.
That's the problem.

The NYT writes about inequality and capitalism. You will absolutely believe what happens next.

I'd bet most of the reporters at the NY times refuse to take anything above the country's median income. After all, they wouldn't want to contribute to income inequality.
Well, they need the extra income so they can go on covering the really important stories like why income inequality in Cuba is a problem. Also, they need a tax cut, but everyone who makes more than them should have their taxes raised.
Closer to the mark, I think.
They need the extra income because it is idiotically expensive to live in Manhattan.
How can that be? They have rent control.
That's right. They deserve more because they chose to live somewhere expensive.
And I'm sure they pay their interns a "living wage".

A few days ago he was ranting about Gini coefficients and inequality (somewhat incoherently). I pointed out that China's Gini # has grown steadily since the 1980s even as the quality of life in China has skyrocketed. He then grew oddly silent.
Im not sure I even favor "equality of opportunity". Equality of rights, and full access to them is what I care about.
^^ precisely this
You are spot on, sir.
Sure, but the access to those rights would maximize opportunity for any given starting point. Having parents or guardians with money or able to successfully educate you will give you more opportunities than people who grow up dirt poor without any education. Note that some people from category A eill end their lives in category B and vice versa. And that's okay as long as nobody else uses force or fraud to move them.
Equal opportunity does not guarantee equal outcomes.
Equal rights do not guarantee equal opportunity.
Income inequality means the system works.
Equal rights do not guarantee equal opportunity.
Exactly my point.
Its probably the closest way to make it happen though.
Its probably the closest way to make it happen though
It's a cliche, but equal rights allow a mixed-raced guy who spent a lot of his early developmental years living outside the country to grow up to be president.
http://www.businessinsider.com.....day-job-10
As a United States Senator, Obama was making $174,000 per year. Since he spent four years there, He banked around $696,000 over the course of his term.
All told, in his time in federal government, Obama made (pre-tax) $2.3 million.
His estimated net worth is between $2.8 million and $11.8 million in 2010.
Not bad for a snake-oil salesman.
Wish my net worth was 1 to 4 times my earnings. I have to spend money, too, ya know.
Well, there was the 3-5 million he got from various book sales before and during the early years as president.
Books that no one in their right mind will ever read.
Has anyone ever tried to calculate the value of all the perks of office that the President enjoys? Meals, housing, wardrobe, vacation, etc.?
And I don't mean to include the cost of security and such. Just the stuff that he and his family directly consume/use.
I'd count the cost of security for everything not absolutely necessary to the duties of the office too. If he wants to go on vacation, or make campaign speeches he can pay for his own damn security.
Someone did a few years back. Said the US royalty cost $1B+ a year, whereas the Brit royalty was, what $50M, $100M a year.
The $1 Billion was the cost to the taxpayer, but I remember reading somewhere somebody calculated the direct personal benefit to the president, such as living in a huge mansion, lifetime benefits, etc. as being on the order of $55-60 million a year.
"Equality of opportunity" is like "all men are created equal". It's not meant to be taken literally. To me it just means that no one is prevented from having any opportunity through use of force.
The obsession with "fairness" and "inequality" has to be merely a fig leaf for envy. Because they sure as fuck don't care about it in a myriad of ways, but when it comes to income or money, suddenly they will burn down the world if that'll just make everyone "equal". I swear, it's as if they're still stuck in grade school hating the kids who have wealthy parents and get more cool stuff than they do. It's so unbelievably juvenile.
How dare those people who didn't waste their youths on getting all the right status markers succeed beyond them!
"The obsession with "fairness" and "inequality" has to be merely a fig leaf for envy."
Bingo. And so a means for evil power mongers to turn people against each other so they can be looted and ground under heel. Look at the evil fuckwit currently inhabiting the White House.
No. Writers for the NYT don't envy poor people in Cuba who've gotten a little less poor.
I think you are right, it is more complicated than that. Some of it is certainly due to envy. Some of it probably has to do with a really terrible understanding of the nature of wealth and how the economy works. Some with a misguided sense of altruism.
I don't think it is envy for most of them. Most of the people railing about inequality are making well into the six figures. Sure, the hoi polloi parrot these people, but I don't put much stake into what anyone says on Facebook or Twitter (or comment boards). I think it's just a means to an end. They want power for the sake of power and blasting inequality is a convenient way to get it. Either that or it is just a way for them to feel a little better about themselves or get into the right cliques. "See, I care about poor people! I'm a good person and a fine, upstanding progressive!"
I think it's mostly social signalling. Most of these people can't be bothered to actually think through the consequences of what they advocate.
This.
Is social signalling the same as moral preening?
Like Thatcher said, these despicable socialists would rather that the poor be poorer provided that the rich were less rich.
There's no eloquence, nuance, or intellectual rigor to socalist thinking. When you cut through all the pontificating and sloganeering you get nothing more than a primitive scream of "Gimme!"
^THIS^ with the addition of "...because FEELINGS!"
I refuse to click. In order to keep myself sane, I'm going to believe that you're lying about not making that up, and that if I click on the article it will actually be from The Onion.

A disaster of widespread inequality.
Those dollar remittances are probably bad for the Cuban economy, creating local inflation. It doesn't help that their central bankers are corrupt bunch also.
In socialist system, dollars create black market economy that, if anything, expands supply. In the official economy, prices are fixed, and work is allocated on quotas, so you won't see inflation, just shortages, and those will occur with or without black market economy going.
I had a friend in law school whose parents were from China (and I think she may have lived there as well). Her and her fiance's actual goal in life was to (1) move to China and (2) become a member of the communist party. I lost a lot of respect for her after that.
Funny how the left gets all worked up about money earned honestly, but doesn't have the time of day for money and power granted via government or political privilege.
The left does not believe in Public Choice, so government or political privilege does not exist.
Her parents were from China and she wanted to go back and be a party member? She must have really hated her parents.
So, why exactly did that bitch want to join the criminal gang that murdered around 77 million Chinese people? What did the Chinese ever do to them?

Can we stick a fork in this dying grand experiment of freedom/liberty? Game over, man, game over!
What else would you expect from evil fuckin' commies? This is the newspaper that knew full well what was occurring in Ukraine in 1932 and hid it from the world making themselves complicit;
From Wiki -
"Evidence of widespread cannibalism was documented during the Holodomor.[48]
Survival was a moral as well as a physical struggle. A woman doctor wrote to a friend in June 1933 that she had not yet become a cannibal, but was "not sure that I shall not be one by the time my letter reaches you." The good people died first. Those who refused to steal or to prostitute themselves died. Those who gave food to others died. Those who refused to eat corpses died. Those who refused to kill their fellow man died.[49]
The Soviet regime printed posters declaring: "To eat your own children is a barbarian act."[50]:225 More than 2,500 people were convicted of cannibalism during the Holodomor.[51]"
That decent Americans don't storm their offices and toss the slimy fucks out the windows is a mark of shame.

Oh, and who was the Fox Newidiot who lamented that now Cubans would have to suffer Home Depot and McDonalds?
The level of evil and retardedness of leftists is astounding.
Statistically, I'm guessing blonde and leggy.
Statistically, I'm guessing pudgy and wearing suspenders.
It was Shep Smith.
That was the same day that A bunch of socialist idiots decided to talk about how awesome Cuba is and how we should be more like them.
Such as Jeremy Scahill saying the following:
"I'm very glad I was able to visit Cuba several times before US tourists try to turn it into Cancun"
Herp, derp.
Or Guardian writer Jeb Lund:
"Cuba has the best doctors in this hemisphere. I'm glad that Obama will overwhelm them with all the corporations that killed Cuba before."
That's right - corporations killed Cuba. The right-wing dictatorship followed immediately by a left-wing dictatorship had nothing to do with it.
Oh, and claiming Cuba has the best doctors in the hemisphere - hilarious. Their doctors aren't as good as what you'd get in Chile or Puerto Rico, much less America or Canada.
Seriously - this weekend I had surgery on my mouth. They pumped me full of novocain, cut up my gums, sent me home. I took a nap, woke up and felt fine.
The quality of American medical care is absurd. Minor surgeries have gotten so unbelievable that they can have you in and out in 15 minutes for some of these procedures and you'll feel absolutely fine.
In Cuba, they have such major medical shortages that Cubans have to buy their own aspirin on the black market because the stores don't have any.
Truly, it is a paradise.
They probably do have some decent doctors. But that doesn't get you too far without drugs and medical supplies.
Yeah, but with the exception of the Castro brothers and friends, all Cubans have had equal access to an equal standard of medical care.
That illustrates why the relaxation of remittance limits will be so disruptive. People with remittance money will obtain better medical care than their neighbors, even though we all know that health care is a right.
/prog/
Didn't Fidel himself go abroad for some life saving surgry a few years ago ?
Holy derp! Shep Smith's sentiments are world-class stupid.

Bull. Shit. My god, I shudder to think that even NYT readers are stupid enough to swallow this horseshit. "Castro and pals stole the entire wealth of the country for themselves with the bestest of intentions!"
not to mention they stole Mr. Burns 1-trillion dollar bill.
They must be trolling their readers to see just how much inanity they will swallow. That is the only explanation. I mean come on - even in my vaguely Democrat days I would not fall for this. This is like extreme leftist fringe stuff.
They have for 50 years...
ALMOST EVERYONE IS POOR
A feature, not a bug.
Well when you are worried where your next meal is going to come from you may not give a crap about natural rights, or for that matter have the strength to fight.
"Cuban economists say that whites are 2.5 times more likely than blacks to receive remittances, leaving many in crumbling neighborhoods like Little Swamp nearly invisible in the rise of commerce, especially the restaurants and bed?-and-breakfasts that tourists tend to favor."
I wonder if New York Times racially profiled the beneficiaries of the Cuban Communist Party with the same diligence as those receiving the remittances. Because based on the article, it seems like Castro government is not great for blacks either.
At any rate, as someone who grew up in the USSR (and whose wife's family is from Cuba), I find NYT attitude puzzling. They seem to complain about people who are trying to make a living for themselves, and make way less than an average NYT columnist? Really?
It helps if you understand that the NYT is run largely by commuinsts and therefore the evil stupidity goes without saying.
Since you grew up in USSR, and find NYT attitude puzzling, perhaps you are not aware that Karl Marx was a correspondent of the New York Tribune, which is now the International New York Times.
Though that linkage is rather remote, the fact is that the NYT is still proud of its Pulitzer for the reporting of John Reed, who was a Comintern functionary and who was interred as a Soviet here in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis. Reed kept Americans misinformed with his dispatches about all the wonderful things that were happening in Lenin's USSR.
I didn't know about Marx. John Reed, yes, ten days that change the world is familiar.
Maybe whites are more likely to get remittances because they were the ones who had to flee or get murdered by Che?
This. The remittances are a reflection of the demographic that left Cuba in the late fifties and sixties. They were a largely affluent demographic that was educated or skilled somehow, and that had the means to flee. The second large wave of Cubans were what the first immigrants call Marielistas, or those that came over during the Mariel boatlift in 1980. That demographic was far poorer and less educated than the early immigrants, and they still are, which means they don't have as much money to send back to family.
It's sick. The Cuban people have suffered decades of redistributionist hell leaving them in utter poverty, and the NYT can only sit back and fret that only some Cubans are benefitting, as opposed to NONE of them benefitting, and argue that what the Cuban people really need is to suffer some other redistributionist scheme aimed at making sure that some of them get LESS. That the Cuban people are too stupid to climb out of poverty on the terms of each individual making the best decision for himself at the time. What they need is the editorial staff at the fucking New York Times to figure it all out for them. It's racist as fuck.
"The single most potent weapon against Cuban inequality is not somehow blocking U.S. remittances, or forcibly funneling them through Castro's benevolent equalizers, but to dismantle the Cuban police state."
Can we dismantle our US police state?
I wouldn't say we are quite at police state yet. But, yes, let's dismantle what is there before we get to the point of a police state.
We're a police-state-lite. Our cops run rampant but insist they're doing it for our benefit/safety. In full-blown police states, the cops run rampant and tell people to shut up and take it, they don't try to make excuses.
Shepard Smith.
Ah, that explains it. I don't think he is exactly the sharpest knife at FOX.
And being duller than Hannity and O'Reilly is pretty difficult.
Shep Smith is the sort of person who, every time he speaks, subtracts from the sum total of human knowledge.
If Erhlich spoke as much as Shep, we would be sucked into a black hole of stupidity.
The article does a fine job generally, but leaves out perhaps the most glaring reason for inequality between Blacks and whites: racism on the part of communist elites like Che and Fidel predating the revolution.
Most foreign estimates place Cuba between 65%-80% black (Cuba's lists 35% like it is ashamed) while it's Communist party is predominately white. Humberto Fontova reports that Blacks constitute less than 2% of the communist party and are woefully underrepresented in the Senior Leadership, National Assembly, and all other important Communist posts. Not a communist party member? Good luck advancing in Cuban society!
Also, don't forget that the longest serving Political prisoner in history is NOT Nelson Mandela and the 27 years he spent in prison under apartheid, but Eusebio Penalver Mazorra, a black Cuban who spent 28 years in Castro's dungeons enduring constant beatings and racial insults.
They called him a monkey. Told him that they pulled him down from a tree and cut off his tail. And the New York Times is worried about remittences?
They worry about the last nail in the coffin of Marxianism. The article shows their desperate attempt at grasping at straws before the fall.
Margaret Thatcher said it best..."they would rather the poor be poorer if it meant the rich were less rich..."
http://youtu.be/rv5t6rC6yvg
So what this says is that the Times is redder than the reds.
I wonder what the inequality pay is at the NYT between say the bathroom mop attendant and the editor
Some NYT employees are more equal than others.
Of course. Income inequality is always a measure of the health of an economy. The poor are always poor, so how wealthy someone can become is a gauge to how much economic opportunity there is.
By itself, it is pretty useless though. You have to combine it with at least one measure of productivity, like per capita GDP.
... Because those nasty Cuban whiteys will stuff their mattresses with remittance money instead of using it to buy goods and hire services.
And these guys are economists. Mind you, they may be little red Marxians who never heard of Menger, or B?hm-Bawerk, never mind Mises or Rothbard.
"Money is racist!"
Afro?Latin American Research Institute at Harvard University
That sounds like parody, it can't possibly be a real thing.
Actually, I think that the real reason why inequality is the new poverty is that people realized that they can't pretend that things are actually getting worse for most people anymore, so they needed some new argument for their Marxist redistribution bullshit.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
the left is absolutely insane
So they're sill a pack of pig-ignorant, commie rat bastards just like they were in Walter Duranty's day? Fuck the NYT.
-jcr
Every time a NY Times reporter gets a paycheck, it increases income inequality in the poor communities of New York. Maybe they should all volunteer their pay to the needy instead. They can keep whatever is left/equal to their new found communist brothers' and sisters' pay then...
No, the logic being used here is far more bizarre. All of their paychecks should be sent to Bangladesh and Somalia.

Is there an easy divide between black and white in Cuba?
My favorite baseball team has a player from Cuba who has dark skin and an afro. Yet he's not considered "black" by the various SJW sports columnists who would like to write lecturing/scolding articles about how the team doesn't have any black players.
I bet those SJW columnists really give the NBA hell for their lack of racial diversity.
Harrison Bergeron gives this story a thumbs up!
"A Marxist Cuban economist devised a plan that would enable the Cuban regime to provide Cubans with all the necessities of life. It seemed like it could solve all the country's problems, but it had one fatal flaw: It was not based on Marxist ideas. The plan was rejected on the grounds that it worked in practice, not theory."

I used to live a cross the street from a Cuban and his husband.
He was telling me about how wonderful Cuba was, how great the healthcare was, how great the food was, how great the weather was, ad infinitum.
I asked him why he didn't live there. After hearing him go on and on about it, it seemed like the only natural question to follow with. Did he want to move back?
"Oh, no," he said, quietly, with a frown on his face, shaking his head. "Oh, no.....I don't want to go back to Cuba."
I'll never figure that out.
A Matter Of The Heart
"For freedom and equality are sworn and everlasting enemies, and when one prevails the other dies." - Will Durant (1885-1981)
There is something in the human heart that will not die no matter how many times it has proven disastrous. That something is the yearning for equality. It is associated with the never-ending pursuit of a successful form of socialism.
"The problem with socialism is socialism; the problem with capitalism is capitalists." - Milton Friedman (1912-2006)
The problem is that the ideals of socialism run counter to the laws of Nature ... to biology itself. Socialism and positive control mix like oil and water. Socialism and negative control mix like cream in coffee except this cream is toxic.
Socialism paves the Path to Perdition ... witness Cuba. Scientific Capitalism paves the Path to Prosperity (www.inescapableconsequences.com).

Income inequality is clearly a valid concern about an economy that is transitioning from communism to capitalism. Look what happened in Russia for example.
