"Bruce Jenner's Impossibly Great American Dream"

Back in the 1970s, Olympic decathlon champion Bruce Jenner helped to define American masculinity, taking the title of "world's greatest athlete" from a defending Soviet champion in a world-record performance. In the 21st century, he is the most famous person in the world to transition publicly from male to female. "He is finally happy," proclaims People magazine, which spoke to sources close to Jenner and his extended reality TV family, the Kardashians.
In my latest Daily Beast column, I ask:
Is there any greater story about the American Dream—so bruised and battered in this godawful 21st century—than Bruce Jenner becoming a woman?
Since at least the days of Benjamin Franklin, we Americans have prided ourselves on being a chosen race for whom birth doesn't equal destiny. As Walt Disney used to say, "If you can dream it, you can do it." It's safe to say that neither old Ben nor super-chilled Walt could possibly grok the 1976 Olympic Decathlon gold medalist's decision to change from he to she, but they don't have to. Nobody does, really, except Jenner himself and those closest to him. Which is another goddamned great thing about America.

True story. I mistakenly wrote "Bruce Jenner" on an epidemiology exam that asked "Who developed the vaccine for smallpox?"
The professor had a good laugh.
he is the most famous person in the world to transition publicly from male to female.
Bradley Manning has a sad.
So does Lana Wachowski.
Has anybody seen Jupiter Ascending yet? I haven't even seen Cloud Atlas. I hate the pop-Marxism of the Wachowskis too much to watch their movies anymore.
Not me. I've only seen V a couple of times. I've always been a Cohen bros. fan when I need quirky cinema.
The torturing of VfV to make it 9/11 Truther apologia was so stupid, I've not bothered with anything else they did. The final two Matrix movies should have taught me that lesson, but Alan Moore drew me back in.
To be fair it's not like V for Vendetta itself wasn't originally a 'Thatcher sucks' screed. Replacing it with 9/11 truther apologia certainly isn't an improvement, but I don't think its initial political commentary holds up that well either.
True, but a limited nuclear exchange is a better backdrop for the rise of fascism than yet another limp stab at Islamophobia and BOOOSH.
And I liked my V to be driven by a more personal vengeance. That avenging Valerie also brought down the government more-or-less as a side-effect was a nice touch.
They were smart to team up with Keanu Reeves. There's often too much pressure to pretend the movie is deeper than it actually is. But if your movie is starring Keanu Reeves, it gives you license to make your movie more fun than it deserves to be.
What about Fifty Shades of Grey? Is it's success evidence of how great America is?
Of course it is! Presumably, the faster we circle the drain, the more awesome we become.
"Is there any greater story about the American Dream...than Bruce Jenner becoming a woman?"
The time i got a paper route and earned enough money to buy an Atari 2600 might be just the first that comes to mind. Oh, another time I took a dump at the top of Mt Washington. In a strong breeze! Also, I know a refugee from the Somalian genocide who works as a dental assistant in Queens now. Basically, every cab driver in NY too. Then there's the Mexicans....
But, Gilmore! He gets to publicize the entire process and sell the rights!
I'm betting the surgical thread will be up for sale after removal, with a signed certificate saying something to the effect that 'this thread tied Bruce's crotch together after his balls were removed!'
I can see it passed down for generations as a reminder of American exceptionalism!
I'm really not willing to go there to find out how he thinks that a man pretending to be a woman is the greatest story of the American Dream in the 21st century.
Yeah you guys laugh all you want.
If you had to live with the Kardashian Klan as long as he has you might go off the deep end to.
To where?
The deep end to...where?
Bruce Jenner being a...what's the correct word? There's so much LGBTQQAWTFBBQ word salad out there, I have trouble staying up-to-date with the vocabulary. Transsexual? Trans-person? Whatever.
In light of this revelation, Bruce Jenner's decision to cohabit with a group of attention-starved, hypersexual women, comes into new focus.
A trans-person is an ape in a business suit, rollerskating while smoking a cigar. (For example.)
I...did not know that.
So, what does that make those dogs playing poker?
With apologies to Sigmund Freud, sometimes a dog playing poker is just a dog playing poker.
Even if they aren't smoking cigars?
Lucky dogs
I'm sure he will be summarily pimped out by his wife like the rest of the Kardashian women in short order.
proper term is "lunatic"
If we're after our Libertarian Moment(TM), this story isn't the gateway drug to sell to the general public.
Is Bruce Jenner even well know outside of the US and not in conjunction with the Kardashians?
Nope, I had to google who they were, and they received a medal at the only Summer Olympics held in my country ever.
Yeah, it is a testament to liberty when mentally disturbed and emotionally confused people can indulge themselves. If Bruce is happy then I am happy for him.
Well, yes it is a testament. Look at how ''mentally disturbed and emotionally confused people" (read: people who make choices different from and strange to Suthenboy's) were or are treated in less free times (here we criminalized and institutionalized such people regularly) and less free places (how do you think he'd be treated in Yemen for example)? That people can follow their own preferences as long as they don't harm others and even when they make people who think the traditional mores they were raised in equal 'the way things are'' is a nice testament to the progress of freedom.
Bo, assuming the stats I saw regarding trans-sexuals & suicide are correct, it would seem to me that most are better off in therapy rather than going through traumatic medical procedures.
I hit a nerve last night, did I?
Good.
Your take on the comment you are replying to is all wrong. I agree with what you are saying regarding Jenner, but that does not detract from his being a nut case.
If your brain is telling you that you were born in the wrong body, it's not your body that's the problem.
You got that right.
"Is there any greater story about the American Dream?so bruised and battered in this godawful 21st century?than Bruce Jenner becoming a woman?"
Is this for real?
You're talking about the same guy who said that Anchorman 2 is the most important film of the year and that Bob Dylan is "the greatest creative force in postwar America" and that Obama would end America's "odious racial discourse" and you are surprised that Gillespie says this?
This seems like an unprecedented level of ridiculousness though.
Yeah. I'm fine with minding my own business and letting Bruce be whatever Bruce wants to be. But, I don't need to celebrate it as defining or fulfilling the American Dream.
He could be a man coming to terms with who he really is, or he could be super fucked-up and really confused.
or he could be super fucked-up and really confused.
That's my thought.
I see it as any other kind of body modification. The only reason more meaning is assigned to it than, say, boob jobs or tattoos is because of gender issues "champions" and I don't like to encourage them.
albeit more extreme than boob jobs or tattoos....which is why I'm also skeptical about the sanity of the person who undergoes it.
Or maybe more reason is assigned because at most times and places this kind of modification would get you jailed, institutionalized or worse?
I don't recall Renee Richards being jailed or institutionalized, and certainly not worse.
Bo Cara: America's great moral scold.
How does that refute the notion that "at most times and places" this sort of modification would get you jailed institutionalized or worse?
For the record, I nonetheless disagree with Gillespie's take on this being the greatest example of the American Dream ever.
Breast implants can be removed and don't cause important parts of your body to stop functioning. What we're talking about with gender reassignment surgery is more extreme than the worst female genital mutilation.
"...Bob Dylan is "the greatest creative force in postwar America"..."
What is Lou Reed, chopped liver?
That was my first thought too.
Admittedly there's something positive to be said about any society that allows the personal freedom to change in the way Jenner did, but ultimately I'd take any immigrant coming over and working their ass off to succeed as a better example.
I agree and I think it's kind of insulting to people who have overcome actual difficulties. Your gender is not a difficulty.
*slaps at penis*
I dunno, this thing DOES seem to get me into trouble.
Thank you for the good laugh. Ha!
I woke up this morning with a bad hangover
And my penis was missing again
This happens all the time
It's detachable
This comes in handy a lot of the time
I can leave it home when I think it's going to get me in trouble
Or I can rent it out when I don't need it
But now and then I go to a party
Get drunk
And the next the morning, I can't for the life of me
Remember what I did with it
First I looked around my apartment
And I couldn't find it
So I called up the place where the party was
They hadn't seen it either
I asked them to check the medicine cabinet
'Cause for some reason I leave it there sometimes
But not this time
So I told them if it pops up to let me know
Gender isn't a difficulty but gender dysphoria certainly is.
Normally the American Dream means dramatically overcoming failure and dire circumstances to achieve unlikely success. So the only way I can see someone sincerely believing that the American Dream is best exemplified in a man becoming a woman is if they thought that there was something inherently wrong with being male, and I don't think that Nick Gillespie believes that. I'll assume he was having some crazy journalism moment.
"So the only way I can see someone sincerely believing that the American Dream is best exemplified in a man becoming a woman is if they thought that there was something inherently wrong with being male"
As I said earlier, I don't agree with Gillespie that this is the best exemplification of the American Dream, but this is ridiculous. It's not there's anything wrong with being male, it's that gender dysphoria very seriously affects people.
Once again the point is proven that if you can categorize some level of "fucked up" and give it a Latin name, you can find a dilettante on any street corner that will buy your bullshit that it's something more than simply being fucked up.
Call it what you want, that wasn't my point. My point was that Gillespie wasn't arguing that being a man in and of itself was a terrible burden.
Libertarian moment Aurora, Colorado.
Our founding fathers repeatedly stressed to skeptical critics that freedom and liberty didn't mean indulgence but the opposite in fact. It's quite clear their critics were right from reading reason.
You can have freedom and liberty as long as you don't use it. Makes perfect sense.
It does because you are a lazy thinker and likely spoiled. A lot of eminently average people in civilizational abundance think like you. Don't have to push themselves to make their 40000 salaries, watch their free porn, and eat off the Taco Bell dollar menu. Sacrifice and achievement are quickly replaced with instant gratification and lame transgressivism as the ordering principles of society.
Don't have to push themselves to make their 40000 salaries, watch their free porn, and eat off the Taco Bell dollar menu.
Division of labor is a great thing. It frees people to become very specialized in what they do, creating more value for society and reaping greater rewards for it.
Don't beat on Sam too much.
He's a loser whose job was taken over by an immigrant and he's still pissed that the immigrant beat him on the English reading-comprehension test.
He's PISSED at immigrants, is Sam!
Right Sam?
The sacrifice and achievement of being annoying in blog comments. So brave. So selfless. sarcasmic, pass me a tissue.
sarcasmic, pass me a tissue.
Before or after I finish jerking off?
Before, please. I don't want it all bloody.
I don't want it all bloody.
No worries. I got that fixed.
Stirring stuff. I can see you pounding the podium, American flag for a backdrop, fighter jets soaring above as you fight the good fight for TEMPERANCE and MODESTY and VIRTUE, oh dear God, what has become of virtue in this country?? Well, we say "No more!" as long as SAM HAYSOM lives and draws breath! [outro "Born in the USA]
Excuse me while I dry my tears in reflection of my shame in failing to live up to Sam Haysom's ideals. Finally, a father figure!
Yep, nothing says duty and obligation like "unalienable rights". That ol' Sam is right on top of getting things backwards.
Way to go, Sam!
I guess it's a good thing that the declaration of independce was never accepted as the governing principles of our nation. Any other one man manifestos I'm supposed to defer to? Maybe the Unabomber's manifesto.
Sam Haysom|2.15.15 @ 4:18PM|#
"I guess it's a good thing that the declaration of independce was never accepted as the governing principles of our nation."
Oh, yes! I remember! It was rejected by...
Sam, go away before you make a bigger fool of yourself.
Why would you defer to other peoples' principles at all? Can't you think for yourself?
You have the right to think for yourself Hugh, but you shouldn't exercise that right. Sam Haysom taught me that.
So he isn't mentally ill? How the fuck can you tell? You can't be mentally ill unless you say you are? How could he NOT be?
That's some catch.
Marshall Gill, not into Ssasz I see.
this godawful 21st century
What about the libertarian Moment? Gillespie and Welch have impressive doublethink capabilities.
In partial defense of the two, isn't their (admittedly overstated) "Libertarian Moment" prospective, not retrospective?
Yes but the "libertarian moment" implies optimism about the future which is belied by Gillespie thinking that the century so far has been "godawful" and Welch saying that Obama's successors are likely to be worse.
Do.
Not.
Care.
yet you posted anyway to tell everyone you don't care. you care.
I really hate the notion that complaining about the subject matter means you care about a given issue.
YES, it is perfectly legitimate to not care about a subject and inform the author of such WITHOUT CARING ABOUT THE SUBJECT.
And not only that, it's OK to complain when somebody says they don't care, or when somebody complains about someone complaining about someone who says they don't care.
I don't really care. Or not.
Hooray! Let's celebrate people who are fucked in the head being able to act out their fucked up desires! Liberty and justice for all!
Admittedly what you're describing sounds pretty damn American.
Want to kill yourself with food? Go nuts! MURICA!
If we have many more reasons to celebrate, I suspect we'll quickly come to the point where most people won't want to touch liberty and justice with a 10-foot pole.
he is the most famous person in the world to transition publicly from male to female.
What about the tennis player? Quite a big deal in it's(!) day.
Where would Gillespie be without his ridiculous hyperbole? I mean Anchorman 2 was the most important film of 2013 after all.
It might have been a big deal in it is day, but if you can't remember the name, it can't be that big today.
I would have named Chazzzzzz Bono.
I think Wendy ('Walter') Carlos deserves a hat tip for 'I was trans before y'all thought it was cool'
'Switched On Bach' (1968) was a the first Top 40 record of wholly-electronic music, and she/he won a few grammys as well. I also think she may have gotten a few academy award noms for The Shining, Clockwork Orange, Tron etc. or for many other soundtrack compositions.
she was genuinely respected as an avante-garde composer, and was a significant influence on electronic music development over the years.
I think what's notable about Wendy/Walter is that she was not considered a "big deal" simply because she snipped her wangadoodle off...
...but because of the significance of the music she made for many years afterwards. I've met a bunch of nerdy elecronic-music types who have her records and have no idea that she was a trans-chica.
Jenner, by contrast = aside from gracing some wheaties boxes back in the 1980s, i'm not sure why anyone cares about his 'private life' at all. (beyond the National Enquirer, that is)
I agree. I watched a british doc on synth-pop, and IIRC most of the early practitioners of the form cited Wendy Carlos' Clockwork Orange work as their initial inspiration.
So she's the one to blame! (/rimshot)
What kind of New Yorker are you?
Jayne (Wayne) County
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAJ6dxM0a9I
Jayne County is just a screaming drunk tranny who partied with rock stars. Not that there's anything wrong with that! I'm trying to keep it 'classy'.
What do Billy Jean King and tennis have in common?
Fuzzy balls.
(The only joke I remember from Jr. HS)
But who will play him in the Lifetime movie?
Michael Douglas or Rosie O'Donnell?
Fallon Fox?
Pat.
Will Tarantino do the script doctoring?
I hope so.
So ironic remake of Glen or Glenda?
I don't know what that means. I was just figuring on racist dialog, disjointed timeline, random killings, closeups of Uma Thurman's feet. Things like that.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It's_Pat#Production
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_or_Glenda
You have too much free time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It's_Pat
Quentin Tarantino revealed that he was an uncredited writer on the script.
I'm not sure if that's something to brag about or not.
Considering that Tarantino saw fit to rip-off pay homage to 1970s Italian B-Movies I think he would brag about it.
I don't see how the two are related.
Tarantino taste is not what I would call highbrow.
Also the guy tried to analyze Top Gun for homosexual themes.
Are you saying that's a problem because it's too easy?
Have you played the Top Gun drinking game where you drink every time something homoerotic happens?
Don't. The longest I've lasted is twenty six minutes. That movie will kill you by alcohol poisoning.
PILOTS ARE NOT GAY!
REOs and WSOs, however...
The National Gay Pilots Association disagrees with you.
Yes, that's a thing.
OT: ISIS beheads 21 Coptic Christians and posts video.

But, but, what about all the abortion clinic bombers and the Crusaders??
ISIS is no different from the gang-bangers in Chicago killing each other every weekend over drug turf!
Good for Bruce. I'm happy for him.
I'm still going to make jokes at his expense, but I am truly happy that he's happy. Ain't hurting me...he can do as he pleases.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-diB65scQU
Looks like Robin Williams didn't take its advice...
Renee Richards- that her name, post-op.
I can already tell in my hyperconservative environment that homosexuality is starting to become more and more accepted. But how long will transexual acceptance lag behind?
If I had to guess, I would think transexuality is much more thought of as a "choice." Therefore, it may be some time before a lot of people think of it as acceptable in society.
Well the SJWs are have been complaining about transsexual jokes for a while...
SJWs have never actually accomplished anything. They're only good at shaming people into behaving the way they think people should act.
What is a SJW?
social justice warrior. i.e a leftist using white guilt against you.
Would not accepting transgenders be more in line with accepting bipolars or schizophrenics.
Our founding fathers repeatedly stressed to skeptical critics that freedom and liberty didn't mean indulgence but the opposite in fact. It's quite clear their critics were right from reading reason.
Your translator seems to be on the fritz, Sam. Run that one through again.
I'll mark that down as another win over you witless commenters. Good thing I'm humble and have zero respect for you guys or my incessant out-reasoning of you guys might make me arrogant.
When you are dead you don't know your dead. Everyone else does, but you don't.
It is the same when you are stupid.
*stolen from some other commenter a while back.
On the wikipedia article about Christine Jorgensen (the first person to have reassignment surgery,) I came across this tidbit:
The world is always more delightful strange than anyone can imagine.
The world is always more delightful strange than anyone can imagine.
Says the author of Doomcock of Doom...
I recognize my limitations.
Maya Angelou did calypso, too.
There's also the hilariously awful movie Bop Girl Goes Calypso, with one of the stars being the voice of George Jetson. The main character (not George) is a professor of eugenics !) who uses a device strangely like an applause meter to determine that calypso music is going to take over the entertainment world. The plat is awful and the musical numbers are risible, and the result is one of those movies that's so bad you'll laugh throughout.
I have no doubt spending more than ten seconds in the company of la Cirque de Kardassians would tempt me to some radical form of self-mutilation, but I certainly wouldn't succumb to the urge, and hire somebody to cut my nuts off.
I'd just run off over the horizon, screaming.
Didn't you get partial credit since you were close to the correct answer of Bruce Banner?
I assume you're responding to me. No, but I argued for credit for making him laugh.
Wendy Carlos! I completely forgot about her.
That's one I honestly didn't know about. I really like the Clockwork Orange soundtrack.

You can almost see Nick's thought process here. Libertarianism, a small political movement which has some transgressive political ideas could nod to a transgressive cultural movement that is gaining prominence and acceptance and perhaps pull people in the latter towards the former. And quite naturally too: the common charge leveled at transgenders, that their not moving to be free along unconventional lines but are instead 'mentally is one libertarians have long recognized as a common ploy of states to enforce such conventions on those who defy them.
So, perhaps people interested in transgender movements will see this article and libertarians in a new positive light.
And then they click on the comments, get all this Free Republicesque commentary and all that's undone.
Expose the hatred, Bo! Drive the Enemy Within out of our midst! Purify us!
It's best you guys just use this place for your bar room chat style get togethers. Because what's important isn't growing this movement, but having a place to have a cathartic vent and paleo conservative support group/haven from the mean, cruel 'proggie'-filled world.
As opposed to you, who uses it as a place to validate your own self esteem problems while whining about the mean, cruel 'right leaner/conservative'-filled world.
Strangely I come here because I largely agree with Reason's writers.
And you?
Yes, I'm aware that you'd love an echo chamber to validate you. And when you don't get it you lash out like a child because how dare people not mindlessly agree with everything a Reason writer says?
If you want that environment join a cult. Here you don't get that privilege.
We must all tow the line of the Cult of Reason! Only through suppressing our individualist views and conforming to the greater collective ideology will we succeed!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_of_Reason
I'm aware Winston, that's what I was referring.
*referencing.
You know, when being accused of juvenile groupthink you might find group parroting of a line you've heard others hear mindlessly toss to be a poor response.
Yes because saying we're all lackeys of Rush Limbaugh is a legitimate argument.
Yes, lord knows that's the only non debate team worthy thing ever said here. Your latching onto it kind if proves my overall point.
So pointing out your admitted shitty arguments is proof that you're right?
Something about motes and beams comes to mind...
So the best you've got is the "only a racist would object to being called a racist" line of arguing?
Not a Bible reader, eh?
Moving the goalposts...
Shockingly Bo, as an individual who constantly engages in strawmen, credentialism, moral tut-tutting and constant attempts to validate your sense of moral superiority to sooth your fragile sense of ego, your opinion on what's 'juvenile' doesn't mean shit.
Ah, Johns list if grievances! Defend your barricades, sir!
Your personality flaws are not my 'grievances'. They're your problem.
Your counting them and obsessing over them though...
Yes Bo, it's 'obsessive' to point out the poor behaviour you constantly engage in. What certainly isn't obsessive is you constantly decrying the state of the comments while proclaiming your own mroal superiority, then delusionally decrying everyone who disagrees with you as Republicans. It's clearly 'obsessive' to make the first year psychology connection between your behaviour and self-esteem problems.
He's an Aspy.
Children with Asperger's syndrome may:
Not pick up on social cues and may lack inborn social skills, such as being able to read others' body language, start or maintain a conversation, and take turns talking.
So your child may not understand a joke or may take a sarcastic comment literally. And his or her speech may be flat and hard to understand because it lacks tone, pitch, and accent.
Have a formal style of speaking that is advanced for his or her age. For example, the child may use the word "beckon" instead of "call" or the word "return" instead of "come back."
Talk a lot, usually about a favorite subject. One-sided conversations are common. Internal thoughts are often verbalized.
Be preoccupied with only one or few interests, which he or she may be very knowledgeable about. Many children with Asperger's syndrome are overly interested in parts of a whole or in unusual activities, such as designing houses, drawing highly detailed scenes, or studying astronomy. They may show an unusual interest in certain topics such as snakes, names of stars, or dinosaurs.
Have delayed motor development. Your child may be late in learning to use a fork or spoon, ride a bike, or catch a ball. He or she may have an awkward walk. Handwriting is often poor.
Yes, but all those things as true of "Assholes" too.
"are true"...
sigh
Bo's answer to the great question is the most logical. Science damn you!
Forgive us our transgressions, as we forgive those who transgress against us.
trans?gres?sion/trans??reSH?n,tranz??reSH?n/
noun
1. an act that goes against a law, rule, or code of conduct; an offense.
Libertarianism is an offensive, extralegal philosophy?
Oh, Bo. How could you?
I imagine your version doesn't challenge any political conventions currently ascendant?
Reading through the comments, I can clearly see that I'm not the only one convinced Nick Gillespie is on The Drugs.
They deserve the capital letters. They've got to be hard shit for him to write something like this.
Must have been stealing from Agile Cyborg's stash.
This is too coherent and poorly written to be a product of Agile Cyborg's stash. I'm pretty sure whatever Cyborg takes allows him to directly tap into the noosphere.
Libertarianism means never having to say "Everybody agrees with me."
I suppose we're all taking orders from Rush Limbaugh then?
I think Tush is a step above this.
So you're denying an argument you just made multiple times?
It's best you guys just use this place for your bar room chat style get togethers.
Does that mean you're going to flounce off back to Bleeding Heart Libertarian, where they appreciate and understand you and your special brand of ratiocination?
The problem with this tired line Brooke is, as usual I'm agreeing with the OP and you and the other Republitarians are the ones not. Rather than me going to BHL why don't you guys go to Rockwell or NRO?
Did you just call Brooksie a Republican?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
That's a good one!
Can't we all just get along?
"Can't we all just get along?"
Where is the fun in that?
as usual I'm agreeing with the OP and you and the other Republitarians are the ones not.
Oh, I get it. We're supposed to nod in agreement every time.
That's what discussion boards are all about.
Pathetic.
Yes, you are, Botard. Also relentlessly irritating and tiresome.
curiously, Bo, agree/disagree doesn't mean shit. No one here is saying Bruce should not be free to become the next member of the Kardashian clan to pimp himself/herself out for whatever reason. But a lot of folks think Nick and his sideburns are trying to redefine hyperbole.
Then try addressing his points rather than the mumbling about how mentally ill the guy is for choosing something that makes some here upset and uncomfortable.
There was a time when libertarians celebrated the work of people like Ssasz and others who showed how charges of mental illness were usually mythological attempts to take away agency, often used by states trying to enforce morality.
I never addressed his mental state, but don't let that get in your way. But if I had, it would have come into question as this is not run of the mill behavior, certainly not for a senior citizen.
Re-read the title of Nick's piece. The mocking is well-deserved. If a sex change defines the American Dream, then the concept has no meaning.
Lastly, and to repeat myself, no one here has suggested that Bruce be institutionalized or forced into doing anything.
Are you saying that gender-reassignment surgery doesn't normally occur late in a person's life? Because the overall transition can be very expensive. I would think it would be more common after middle age than before it.
Not saying that at all. Renee Richards emerged after a long career as a male doctor. Just saying that Bo's scare words about institutions and such are ridiculous, especially here where no one has suggested that Bruce be locked up.
I do think the notion of this as some realization of the American Dream is overheated, though that insults the term overheated.
There was a time some time ago
When every sunrise meant
A sunny day
"...something that makes some here upset and uncomfortable."
I think you assume too much. Pointing out that someone is emotionally disturbed is not the same as being upset or uncomfortable.
I know a guy who used to carry a cane, wear tweed sweaters and a derby hat. After a year or two he got tattoos, bought a Harley and wore nothing but biker leather. A year later it was coach shorts, tennis shoes and rugby shirts.
I was not disturbed by his lack of identity or of his donning of costumes to try and acquire one but the man was clearly mentally disturbed. I fully support his freedom to pretend to know who he is.
Your concern trolling is getting tiresome Bo.
you and the other Republitarians
I always get a nice chuckle out of that.
as usual I'm agreeing with the OP
OP = what, pray tell?
Official Position?
Olympic People. Like Jenner.
Duh, PB!
Guy, guys. We're losing our cool over the subject of Bruce Jenner. Maybe if it was on the subject of Kerri Strug, the short tempers would be justified.
is she getting Bruce's to-be-discarded penis?
She's getting Kathleen Turner's voice to replace her dulcet Muppetones? falsetto.
Kathleen's voice might actually be deeper than Bruce's. It's Olympians gone wild.
Strug is like 37 now!

As long as he is paying the medical bill himself, he could change himself into a mutant ninja turtle for all I care.
Still looks like a dude in a dress though.
cue Steven Tyler.
Jesus fucking AntiChrist, Gillespie - you are utterly careening off the rails.
I could give two shits what Bruce Jenner does - good for him if this makes him (or anyone else in the same situation). SERIOUSLY - I'm happy for them.
But - I know of no one who saw him as helping "to define American masculinity" in the 70's. And it's just fucking idiotic to say this has anything to do with the "American Dream" as it's generally understood (overcoming odds to find some level of success, reach a goal, just survive). This is just a fucking washed up former athlete/D-list celebrity making a choice something like less than 0.001% of people across the GLOBE choose to make (I'm spitballing that percentage a bit, in case you wondered), and certain segments of the media thinking that's REALLY SUPER COOL, AND IMA WRITE ABOUT IT!
Please find a gandy dancer to straighten out your tracks and get back to something resembling thoughts and ideas relevant to a rather wide section of your readership.
You know, like circumcision, pizza, Messicans, butt secks - etc.
Thanks.
I was born in the early 1970's, and from what I remember, the epitome of manhood was Mean Joe Greene.
"Please find a gandy dancer to straighten out your tracks...."
I know that I'm late, but damn, that's funny.
+1 pair of tie tongs for knowing what a gandy dancer is, or at least was.
I promise never again to suggest snarkily that someone release the Botard if it never shits all over a thread again.
Seriously. I PROMISE. I will never again suggest that.
I think it's possible that Bo was what the squirrels demanded in return for releasing their furry grip on the commentariat. It's a small price to pay, really.
Bo only has the power that you idiots give him by talking to him. JUST SAY NO. Wait, don't even say that. Don't say anything to him. Let him be a virginal argumentative Aspy all by himself.
release the Botard
I find him slightly less apoplectically infuriating than dunphybot 2.0.
So he's got that going for him.
Hey, you remember that time he tried to pick on you? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Of all the people on here that that wannabe mean little fucker thought he could beat up on. You. HAHAHAHAHAHA what a moron.
Bo only has the power that you idiots give him by talking to him.
I can't resist poking it with a stick, once in a while, just to watch it bite the air ineffectually.
Is there anything Nick approves of that isn't "THE GRATEST LIBERTARIAN THING EAVAR!!!!11!"?
You must be some kind of Republitarian!
I had no idea this little drama was even happening. Of course, I don't follow the reality circus.
No, just as every thing Gillespie and Bo oppose is automatically social conservatism. Same principle at work. La liberte-- c'est nous.
Sam,
Manny really didn't mean for you to take it personally when you were fired.
It's not that he doesn't like you; it's just that you're a worthless shit.
The Libertarian Godfather
Nick is a libertarian born in a progressive's body. He can't help who he is and why don't you just stop being a bigot?
Maybe Jenner was jealous of all the Soviet athletes who got to make fun changes to *their* bodies.
Here's what *is* part of the American Dream - we are kind of proud of our weirdos - like the Emperor Norton -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_Norton
Norton was a trans-Emperor who claimed to rule the United States. In other countries, he would have been locked up or hanged for treason, but in the U.S. (specifically San Francisco), people humored him and his funeral was widely attended. But that doesn't mean people thought he was an actual emperor, they thought he was a nut. Which he was.
...and currency issued in his name was honoured in the establishments he frequented.
Ye Olde Bitcoin?
"Everybody understands Mickey Mouse. Few understand Hermann Hesse. Only a handful understood Albert Einstein. And nobody understood Emperor Norton." -- Principia Discordia
If people obeyed his edicts, even ironically, in what sense was he not an emperor?
Eventually, we'll get to the place where a fellow will claim that he's actually a squirrel born in a human's body, and will want to have a giant fuzzy tail surgically attached to his butt.
Who am I to judge, though? Right? I mean, he will have to deal with being chased by dogs* the rest of his life....
*Not actual dogs, but people who say that they were dogs born in human bodies, and have had their legs surgically shortened so that they can run around on all fours.
I will never permit that to happen - I'll put a stop to it, or my name isn't Napoleon Bonaparte!
I can hunt them though right?
That's an excellent question.
OT:
How one stupid tweet ruined Justine Sacco's life.
"Sacco's fate would have been different had an anonymous tip not led a writer named Sam Biddle to the offending tweet. Biddle was then the editor of Valleywag, Gawker Media's tech-industry blog. He retweeted it to his 15,000 followers and eventually posted it on Valleywag, accompanied by the headline, "And Now, a Funny Holiday Joke From IAC's P.R. Boss."
In January 2014, I received an email from Biddle, explaining his reasoning. "The fact that she was a P.R. chief made it delicious," he wrote. "It's satisfying to be able to say, 'O.K., let's make a racist tweet by a senior IAC employee count this time.' And it did. I'd do it again." Biddle said he was surprised to see how quickly her life was upended, however. "I never wake up and hope I [get someone fired] that day ? and certainly never hope to ruin anyone's life." Still, he ended his email by saying that he had a feeling she'd be "fine eventually, if not already."
Sam Biddle was also one of the class-acts @ Gawker who insisted that the UVA Frat was probably still guilty even when all none of the facts didn't lined up . PILE ON!
noted = people like Sam Biddle or Ana Merlan? Don't ever seem to suffer anything for the perpetual-accusatory posture. Why is that?
what difference...
