NJ Cop Gets Promoted, Tries to Run Over Councilman, Suspended Without Pay

Monique Smith of the Irvington Police Department (IPD), a former internal affairs investigator promoted to Captain on Monday afternoon, ended up allegedly trying to run over Newark, N.J. councilman John James just a few hours later. NJ.com reports:
James was close to his home in the area of Elizabeth Avenue and Pomona Avenue when he was confronted by Smith around 11 p.m., according to Glover. As she yelled at him, James got into his car and drove off.
Smith got into her personal vehicle and followed the councilman, allegedly striking his vehicle several times. James then proceeded to his parents' home on Wilbur Street, where his father, former longtime Newark mayor Sharpe James, intervened on his behalf, Glover said.
Police were called to the scene, but were unable to locate Smith until early this morning.
Smith was arrested on a number of charges including aggravated assault, stalking, harassment, criminal mischief and weapons-related charges. She was suspended by the IPD, without pay. According to NJ.com, Smith, who was most recently with the personnel division of the department, made $116,252 in 2013. Irvington is a town of just 53,000 people with among the highest violent crime rates in the state. Irvington relies in part on state funding to plug holes in its budget this year. The high pay for police officers of questionable effectiveness, however, is not unusual for Irvington. New Jersey has the best paid police officers in the country. The median salary in 2010 was $90,672. That's a "policeman's salary."

A duke outranks a knight-captain, even in Newark.
Exactly. If you want to fuck with someone, fuck with someone of a lower caste.
It was a good shoot run over attempt.

You can't make this shit up. She's in charge of investigating bad police behavior.
How did she get suspended? She didn't think she did anything wrong.
No, she's in charge of covering up bad police behavior. And there's nobody to cover up for her now. Pity, that.
Smith got into her personal vehicle and followed the councilman, allegedly striking his vehicle several times.
Under the standards of self-defense that cops enjoy, he would have been justified in blowing her head off.
Those standards only apply when dealing with little people. Politicians enjoy even greater privileges than cops.
especially those who arise through nepotism.
Look, we need some succession process, don't we?
Dynasticism, not nepotism. Unless Newark appoints its council members.
I would be surprised if they charged a private citizen with firing on someone trying to kill them with a car. Then again, Zimmerman.
Realize that they originally didn't want to charge Zimmerman but later caved to the race-baiting.
True. They let him walk at first. Florida has decent self defense laws.
"Under the standards of self-defense that cops enjoy, he would have been justified in blowing her head off"
Absolutely. That's just what three cops did in Glenolden, PA last week. Unarmed mentally troubled guy was boxed in by police cars, he backed into one, the cops leaped out of the way and unloaded 20 shots into his vehicle, killing him. All cops went home safe at end of shift.
He would have been better off if he had, then there wouldn't be anybody to contradict his story.
Except in NJ where would you get a legal gun to blow the assailant away?
Don't you have to store the gun in the trunk, in a fire proof safe? And the ammo in a separate locked container, each round individually wrapped in a prophylactic?
C'mon. He's connected. He could get a permit no problem.
Yup, the connected are the only ones who can get carry permits.

a woman in HR?
Yeah that is pretty shocking. Next you will try to tell me that she also didn't have a sense of humor.
Go ahead try to tell me that there is a gal in HR that doesn't find anything funny ever. I'd so call BS on that.
Personnel is for assholes.- Det. Harry Callahan.
To be fair, this story sounds like there's a lot more to it than just your average day-to-day police entitlement. The guy's the son of Sharpe James, who pretty much ranks as the crooked Newark machine's royalty (well, other than the fraud conviction). This story's got to have more to it than we know at this point.
Yeah, I was thinking jilted lover.
No way its not.
Maybe. That would explain the promotion. A consolation prize.
A couple of city employees in a life or death fight = corruption.
A woman and a man in a life or death fight = someone put their penis in the wrong place.
A city employee in a life or death fight - paid vacation.
A woman and man in a life and death fight - jail time until the judge figures out who's at fault.
I'm guessing the stalking charge is not only about what happened last night. I imagine some kind of relationship between the two.
The only happy ending would be if they both killed each other.
...and everyone else lived happily ever after. The End.
Sharpe James made that shiiiiit guy on The Wire look clean. No way this doesn't involve money and sex.
So the King's men CAN be held accountable IF they abuse other King's men.
Got it. Serfs, okay. Lords, not so much.
Thank god society has progressed as far as it has.
Our feudal lords and their knights are wearing different costumes! That's progress!
No, they look lame.

I've seen this episode of FX's The Shield. I think Michael Chiklis is about to show up and seduce the captain.
Based on my expectations of petty politico's morals, I'm guessing they were fucking, and she went ape-shit when she found out he was banging some other slut on the side.

Was he promoted before or after he tried to run over the councilman? Because that sounds like something worthy of a promotion to me.

I should not be surprised by the figure, and yet.....
I'm going out on a limb and guess they're ex-lovers. Pass the popcorn. Or the cop porn.
Nice.

See there's the difference between civilians and the cops. If the councilman had had professional cop training, he would have jumped on the hood of her car and emptied several magazines of ammo into her face.
Or clips.
I'm sure she'll find the compensation from the state for making license plates very satisfying.
