We've got just a little over 24 hours left in Reason's 2014 Webathon. We're looking $200,000 in tax-deductible donations to help fund our journalism and commentary in the coming year. So far, almost 850 people have given about $150,000, for which we can only say: Thank you!
Here's what a small sampling of our generous benefactors have told us so far:
Thank you for all of your hard work and insight. What a great team you have.
This is a donation to help to keep Peter Suderman writing on healthcare.
Please keep my donation as private as possible. Thank you!
Thank you for standing up for free speech. #GamerGate
This is the first year I've given at a level to get a reward, you must be doing something right. 🙂
Reason is the most important resource in the world for the liberty-minded, and made a huge impact on my own socio-political philosophy.
Thanks for all the work you do. Your work has changed my life.
The ongoing posts on the UVA Rape Story by Robby Soave have motivated me to donate. Simply superb criticism and attention to detail.
Thank you for keeping up with social media trends. It helps!
Please keep up your outstanding work! I read the site everyday and post many of your articles and videos on social media.
Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men and women, and liberty for all!
Keep up the great work. I love the magazine (I've been a subscriber since the 1970s!) and now enjoy Reason.TV many times each week.
I do not want my money going toward a new hoverboard for Mr. Bailey. (He should get the old one repaired.)
If you haven't yet ponied up, please do! A $100 donation nets you a Reason winter beanie cap, a year of the print mag and full access to the forthcoming special digital edition (featuring 46 years of full archives!). You give more, you get more stuff, from signed copies of Damon Roots great SCOTUS analysis, Overruled, to t-shirts and lunch invites with Reason editors in D.C.
Please give what you can, safe in the knowledge that we'll be using your hard-earned bitcoins to make a stand for "Free Minds and Free Markets" every live-long day. Just as we've done since 1968, we'll bring you leading-edge analysis and news from a libertarian perspective and we'll be your voice in debates over politics, culture, and ideas.

It changed MY life!
I was intending to go buy a double-latte-fizz-something at Starbucks, and instead I gave that money to REASON!
I had no "coffee" to drink while reading the morning links! What a change!
I may be overly sensative to it, being a UNIX admin I get e-mails contaiming problems/error messages, and all too often people take screenshots of the command line output instead of copying the test, so in order to get to the location and/or do a search on it I have to type out insanely long and complex strings that should just be able to be copied out.
Likewise, what's the point of reposting a text argument as an image? It loses all of the advantages of being text without gaining any benefit from being an image.
I understand your point, but in this case, someone saw the posts and screencapped it, which was much easier for them that copying the text from multiple posts. It also serves as kinda-sorta proof that these posts appeared on this board. (Yes, that can be faked, which is why I said "kinda-sorta.") It can now be easily shared, while being harder to alter or misquote. Call it a poor man's archive.
I'm still pissed that Damon Root hasn't published an article about whether or not my depraved sexual innuendos directed towards Matt Welch meet the Supreme Court's true threat threshold.
Wikipedia has some interesting bits about the UVA Rape Case:
The site also said it had interviewed "two Virginia students who claim the victim had lied about sexual assault allegations in the past."
If this is true then there goes the last remnants of Jackie' credibility.
Also on December 8, the accuser's father gave an exclusive interview to the British tabloid the Daily Mail, in which he maintained that his daughter had been gang raped at a University of Virginia fraternity. The father asserted that his daughter had been mistaken about the specific fraternity and innocently misidentified it as Phi Kappa Psi, though he did not identify an alternate fraternity at which it was supposed to have occurred. His statement seemed to contradict an earlier assertion the accuser had made to the Washington Post in which she stated that "I know it was Phi [Kappa] Psi, because a year afterward, my friend pointed out the building to me."
The person who claimed she had evidence that she had lied about false accusations in Charles Johnson, a man totally lacking in credibility, who is also the person who outed her real name and started posting pictures of her Pinterest page - actions which, I would argue, are completely inexcusable given that she may still be an assault victim of some sort, even though the story we've been told is obviously false. He therefore may have just outed a woman who has serious emotional problems and may actually be a rape victim of some kind.
In other words, I wouldn't trust the claims of someone like Johnson and a site like Gotnews unless future evidence surfaces to back them up.
Actually, I just looked at their site. They now have a post up of the woman they're saying was the Rolling Stone source and she has a sign from 2011 in which she's claiming she was the victim of yet another rape.
She has a sign at a DC slutwalk in which she talks about being raped, and this would have been 18 months before she was allegedly raped at UVA.
If Gotnews is right (and they're shady as fuck, so I don't inherently trust them) this could be a serial falsifier of rape claims.
It's a different Charles Johnson. They're both shady as hell. I looked at their site though and they seem to have their ducks in a row on this, assuming the person they pointed out is the right Jackie. The evidence seems pretty compelling that she was making rape accusations over a year prior to the alleged rape at U-VA.
She also explicitly claims her friends called her 'trash' for this past rape accusation, which dovetails completely with the story she told Erdely.

Unlike the Rolling Stone I'm not going to immediately believe in something because it suits my beliefs.
After all I was neutral on the case until I read Erderly's pathetic rebuttals to the hoax allegations. That's when I knew something was wrong.
If what Gotnews is saying is true then it looks like Jackie's story is a total hoax. Man what a disaster.
the person who outed her real name and started posting pictures of her Pinterest page - actions which, I would argue, are completely inexcusable given that she may still be an assault victim of some sort, even though the story we've been told is obviously false.
Sorry, but no.
If you want to make an accusation, do it publicly, so we can evaluate the credibility of your accusation. Hiding behind anonymity only raises the opportunity for abuse of this by bad actors, as seen here.
Heh. When this first broke I mentioned that this may be true, that this may not be the only time she has made these kinds of allegations. I also gave an example of a person I know who has done exactly that.
I was going to to donate and then I drunkenly promised my friend who works at a NFP in Milwaukee to purchase a bunch of Legos for Somali refugee kids living in the city. He's a dirty socialist and community organizer but a good guy nonetheless.
I've got the 1 and 2 seed in a couple of fantasy football leagues with good payouts so if I win one of them I'll give the Reason guys a little scratch, however, it won't be in the next 24 hours. Before Christmas though.
Also, good drinking with you and the gang. I haven't had an umbrella drink since my honeymoon. It was terrible, but the buzz was strong and the company was good, so all in all a good evening. Thanks everyone (particularly Jesse and Playa).
There is grandeur in this view of derp, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.
I wish I could donate, but finances are tight these days. I did subscribe to the dead-tree version for over 25 years, so you can't say I haven't done my part....
My buddy's ex-wife makes $84 /hr on the computer . She has been fired from work for 7 months but last month her payment was $13167 just working on the computer for a few hours.

A supposed libertarian expounding upon the merits of recycling?
GO AWAY, COSMOTARIAN.
^ This.
How much do I have to donate to get rid of millennial polls?
Millions.
Enough to send the entire staff to rehab for poll withdrawl and buy off their families.
More than I'd have to donate to get them to change the name to EMOTE!1!.
Alright I made mine for the year, keep it up.
It changed MY life!
I was intending to go buy a double-latte-fizz-something at Starbucks, and instead I gave that money to REASON!
I had no "coffee" to drink while reading the morning links! What a change!
You didn't end up destroying a keyboard and/or monitor expelling coffee at a snarky remark?
I cried because I had no coffee until I met a man who had no scotch.
"You know, I cried when I had no shoes, until I met a man who had no feet. And then I laughed...really hard."
While Epi was laughing, he failed to hear the footless man declare himself to be Magnus Toebiter. Now Epi has no shoes and no toes.
But what about my keyboard?!
I'm cheap; I drink my coffee black and am not opposed to filling up a thermos with it.
It changed my life. I switched from Lagunitas Lil Sumpin to Bud Lite for a month and sent the $1000 I saved to Reason.
Oh, don't tell my sponsor about this.
OT: Letter to SJW found on imgur tonight, epic.
Probably a repost: This 4chan user neatly encapsulates most of what were up against.
Given that the commentary was 100% text, why was it posted as an image?
What use is a screenshot of text? It's hard to read and harder to share.
The text expands if you click it. Is that what you mean?
No.
It's a pet peeve of mine - screencaps of text.

But, whatever, I get too worked up over it.

Nice.
What the hell, Gillespie? Those are the comments you publish?
You are keeping all of the nasty, snarky, really funny ones from us.
Don't worry, the nasty, snarky comments get posted by the regular commentariat anyway, so they're liable to be repeated and/or paraphrased for you.
I'm still pissed that Damon Root hasn't published an article about whether or not my depraved sexual innuendos directed towards Matt Welch meet the Supreme Court's true threat threshold.
You';re on their reasonable filter list.

Didn't she claim to be an 18yo freshman when she was gang raped at phi psy (or whatever) in September of her freshman year?
Which means that the pix you reference would be a 16yo 'Jackie"?
LGF is claiming that the photo is of a different woman.
Is that the same Charles Johnson behind Little Green Footballs? Or some other Charles Johnson as that is a common name.
In other words, I wouldn't trust the claims of someone like Johnson and a site like Gotnews unless future evidence surfaces to back them up.
Agreed.

Huh it looks like Wikipedia has been updated to mention that Charles Johnson of LGF is saying that the Slutwalk photo is of a different woman.

My memory is fuzzy so I can't link.
Thanks to Reason I met a really awesome libertarian woman. So I gave them $10 because romance is expensive, yo.
libertarian woman
Unpossible.
It was the same one we all met. You'll note the lack of actual romantic success in that comment.
kibby? I have not seen her commenting? Is she chained in your basement?
She went to UVA for some action.
Thanks to Reason, I'm drinking with many like minded libertarians at a tiki dive bar. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY. (All 74? of it.)

Eh that was mean. I just had trouble parsing your description.
It's OK. I didn't understand your put-down anyway.
He's saying your last paragraph was "Agile Cyborg"-ish.
