Protesters at White House: 'Obama, Where Are You? We Voted for You!'
Last night, a few minutes before 9:30 p.m. Eastern, a prosecutor in Ferguson, Missouri, announced that police officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted for the killing of teenager Michael Brown.
For an hour, Lafeyette Park and the street in front of the White House remained quiet. It seemed as if the nation's capital might not see the types of demonstrations already unfolding in places like Ferguson and Seattle—as if residents had resigned themselves to the inevitable and, despite disappointment at the grand jury's decision, might not have the energy to make an appearance at one of the world's most famous protesting grounds.
Then, right at 10:30, about 15 Howard University students arrived, chanting, "Black lives matter!" and "No justice, no peace!" Dozens more would follow, then hundreds. Soon, a young woman with a bullhorn shouted something at the White House that seemed perfectly to capture the feelings of the growing crowd: "Obama, where are you? We voted for you! Obama, come out!"
The president had already made some televised remarks. But these protesters were looking for more. They wanted him to be personally involved in what they were doing.
They would not get what they were asking for. Promptly at midnight, the White House went dark. The protesters moved on, toward U Street and the African American Civil War Memorial, they said, to continue the demonstration somewhere people might be listening.
Photos from the protest are below the fold, while my tweets from the White House are available here.

Reason TV's Todd Krainin has video from the protests here.

A) What can he do?
B) All things considered, do you *really* want him to do something about this?
You are projecting. These people don't have any powers of cognition or forethought. As proof, they admit to voting for Obama.
Forgive me, I'm trying to maintain my grasp on the last few threads of my faith in humanity...
Why in hell would you want to do that?
Because I'm an idealist and trying this whole "being optimistic" thing.
How's that working out for you?
In a word? Stressful
Just a matter of do you trust Eric Holder to do anything.
President Lightbringer could resurrect Michael Brown with but a wave of his hand, that's what!
Maybe they were expecting him to resurrect the dead kid.
Well he's ignored the standards of justice and done all sorts of unconstitutional and illegal things for the last six years!
Why shouldn't he do the same thing for them?
What's it take--a campaign contribution?!
'Obama, Where Are You? We Voted for You!'

I laughed. Hard.
once upon a time, there was this mythical figure named King who managed to inspire a good deal of social change without breaking things and stealing stuff. At this point, MLK is closer to fairy tale than morality play.
Send us a king, the people cried out.
"....and we'll nail him to a cross!"
"We Voted for You."
So we expect you to rub our tummies and solve all our problems.
Jesus, the future makes me drink.
Why do you drink, boy? Go upstairs and pork Liz Taylor's brains out!!
Jesus, the future makes me drink.
Not with a bang, but a whimper...
Maybe they'll make the leap to realizing that just being in government doesn't make someone either omnibenevolent or omnipotent. Yeah, I know: And maybe I'll win the Powerball.
"Obama, where are you? We voted for you! Obama, come out!"
"Go away! 'Batin'!"
Its so cute. Its like they think Obama gives a fuck about anyone or anything but Obama.
Eric is hiding underneath an old dusty radiator. He needs to keep a low profile since the resignation. Barack has no more elections to worry about after totally failing the last one. No more grandstanding for him. Maybe he'll fly over Ferguson in a helicopter and hug a few protesters.
Something tells me that this is an ongoing disaster for the Dems in 2016 and an opportunity for Republicans. Which means of course we'll end up with another Nixon.
"...an opportunity for Republicans."
The Republicans never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.
Most of what I hear from the right is cop-fellating and passionately debating the details of the Brown case to try and vindicate Wilson.
They either completely misunderstand the situation or they are being mendacious.
PARTY. OF . STUPID.
Agreed on missing opportunity, but, well...the Republicans seem pretty happy with the status quo. Why would they try to change things for the better when this bullshit works just as well for them as it does Sharpton?
The Believers choose to follow Randall Flagg, and then are disappoint when he dashes their hopes and fails to live up to their wildest dreams.
It's sooooo delicious!
I'm ready for Trashcanman.
"My life for you!"
M-O-O-N
That spells Obama.
Such are the wages of a cult of personality. You can never give the cult enough to be happy. Look at this

Latino voters want more exectutive actions. Since Obama did one, they don't understand why he can't do more. Isn't he above the law?
Obama is going to end up being hated most by his most ardent supporters.
Just great. Latinos want a "generalissimo".
That comes as a complete surprise. How unexpected.
That's not sarcasm. That's lame.

I wonder if anyone in that crowd even knows that the Congressional Black Caucus hung them out to dry as well by voting against a bill to deauthorize selling of surplus military hardware to police.
They know they only did it because of evil Rethuglicanz obstructionism.
I kept waiting for someone, anyone, to be offended by all the talk of violence before the announcement, the implication that one cannot expect anything else from 'those people.' But no one said a word, treating what would follow as a totally rational and natural reaction. And then people question where stereotypes come from.
I was....the word isn't "offended", cause nothing really "offends" me.
I sure was pissed and disturbed that fucktards were just begging for a riot, if that's what you mean.
And I totally agree - some people seem to expect every stereotyped behavior, and reinforce it when it happens. I find it repugnant.
The major media are some of the most apalling racists left in the country. There are few stories the major media loves to tell more than "the evil negroes are going to riot". They act like black people are nothing but sub human animals who cannot be reasoned with.
They act like black people are nothing but sub human animals who cannot be reasoned with.
my point in a nutshell. But everyone else is racist. Then, of course, the prediction is proved. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Did they riot?
"A riot is an ugly thing...und, it is just about time that ve had vun!"
"To ze lumberyard!"
Well... were they wrong?
Well, in this case those people (specifically, the protesters in Ferguson, who may or may not be representative of the residents) have a track record of somewhat violent protests on this particular issue. And that behavior is understandable.
But extrapolating that out to the greater population in an incident-free context is BS.
Haha, SUCKERS!
Protesters at White House: 'Obama, Where Are You? We Voted for You!'
a ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
"Obama, where are you? We voted for you! Obama, come out!"
"Oh, what the heck. Yes, I'm gay!"
Give it a few years. The black community will no longer want to be associated with Obama and he will become "the first gay President". You have to really hate gays to want to saddle them with Obama but politics is mean like that sometimes.
I disagree. Some may, but I think many in the community will simply blame the devil (the right) for Obama's failures and shortcomings.
I don't think so. I think the Democrats really fucked up putting in a black President. The problem is that the Democrats built up electing Obama so much and used the race card so appallingly against Bush, black people actually thought things were going to get better because Obama was elected and now feel cheated and betreyed since things have gotten worse.
Blacks are not going to go Republican. But a few will. Mostly, blacks are going to be embittered and cynical and stay home in the coming years. The Democrats will never again achieve the kind of black turnout they did in 08 and 12. I think they know this and this is why they are going so hard for the Latino vote.
The fairly well-off people I know who voted for Obama mostly deny that he has shortcomings. Their stocks are doing great!
Shriek approves this post.
The Democrats will never again achieve the kind of black turnout they did in 08 and 12. I think they know this and this is why they are going so hard for the Latino vote.
Latinos will certainly have far more political clout in about 10 years than blacks. Heck, it's even happening now--outside of Obama, there aren't any black politicians with the potential clout to impact national elections.
Obama was promoted hard by the media because he had an exotic name and spoke like an Ivy League preppy. He was essentially a political tchotcke that got elected because people bought his "transformative" storyline hook, line, and sinker. But if it comes down to a Latino or a black person from here on, the Latino is going to come out on top more often than not.
My prediction is that blacks will become this century's version of the Italian immigrants--working-class families and individuals who settled in their own ethnic enclaves due to white racism, asserted their rights, and then saw their neighborhoods gradually absorbed by Latino migrants until they no longer had the political clout as an ethnic group that they once did to elect people who represented their own unique interests.
The problem is that the Italians intermarried and eventually melted into society in a way blacks never will.
The problem with divorcing the black vote and taking up with the Latinos is that blacks are still a hugely important power base for the Democratic Party. If the Democrats even slipped to a 70-30 share of the black vote, they would not have won a Presidential election since Johnson in 64. And they own all of the big cities in this country thanks to the black vote. Worse, the Latino vote is never going to break for them in the huge numbers the black vote has. And the Latino vote is much more diverse in its interest an opinions than blacks and Latinos marry whites and slowly melt into society like other immigrants have.
My guess is that there is going to be a huge backlash against immigration. We are due for one and there always has been in the past whenever the foreign born population reaches about where it is now. After the backlash, immigration will slow down and the Latinos will end up being gradually absorbed in the way you describe. The blacks are always going to be a force because of history and the lack of intermarriage keeps them a homogenous group in a way other groups are not.
Not sure about the gay bit, but otherwise you're on to something. In a few years, persona-non-grata to all but a few wierdos.
I don't think you're right. Surely you've seen the various cherry-picked metrics that claim that Obama has been the best President ever. Hell, right now I'm watching a family member's house while they get some work done (I work from home, so it might as well be their home today) and they have a picture of the President on the side of their fridge.
"Surely you've seen the various cherry-picked metrics that claim that Obama has been the best President ever"
There was a website somewhere which is nothing but "Charts for Progs" (PB used to cite it); its retarded how numerically mendacious they are.
I can't find the mother-lode location (maybe it was Tumblr thing), but this provides an example... of how they like to see this
i.e. they will dishonestly compare 'rates of change' and 'direction of change' to claim something is 'better'.
One reason its so effective is that the people making the arguments most often can't even explain what the numbers actually reflect. "deficit" is a fairly meaningless term to them, and the fact that spending rises far in excess of the tax base is simply an argument for Raising Taxes, duh!?
::narrows gaze::
No worries: Holder is still on the case.
"Obama, where are you? We voted for you! Obama, come out!"
His remarkable similarity to Nixon doesn't extend as far as actually mingling with protesters face to face.

Prediction =
H&R threads will be rife with race-baiting socon trolls for next few days.
Actually, its not much of a prediction. 2-3 have already crawled out of the muck.
I don't think those trolls are socons. Socons never come on here. Who does come on here are leftist trolls. Those "socons" are nothing but leftist trolls posting racist shit that will later be used by leftists bloggers and such as evidence of how Libertarians are racists.
Think about it. Why would a SOCON come on here to troll Reason? What purpose would doing so serve? If you want to post crazy racist shit, there are lots of places to do it where you can get an amen chorus. Why come here?
The only people who have any motive to post racist shit on here is leftists who are obsessed with the idea their political enemies and are happy to conduct false flag operations to prove it.
Nothing brings out the latent racism in a socon like black people rioting.
It's like waiving a red flag in front of a bull.
...except racist socons aren't like bulls. They're more like frightened little turtles.
Except that there are never any SOCONS who ever post here. And there are any number of leftist trolls, including one so notorious she is constantly banned by Reason.
Reason has had and will continue to have a leftist troll problem. It has never to my knowledge had a SOCON troll problem. If you want to believe it has one now because the evil SOCONs are all about the racists, have fun. The reality is that you are most likely being played for a fool by the resident leftist troll infestation.
"there are never any SOCONS who ever post here"
I think we need to consult an expert.
Bo?
RELEASE THE BOTARD!!
We get a good taste of them from the marriage is between a man and a woman crowd, and the why does Reason blame America for everything first bunch...
But I'm sure when the guys who do that here go talk to the real soccons, the real socons think those guys are a bunch of liberals (real socons can't see into libertarian multidimensional space).
Sort of like...
When I was in boarding school in Virginia, there was this local kid I knew--and everybody called him a hillbilly. One time, he was talking to me about the these people that lived on the other side of the mountain behind his Dad's place. Said they ate squirrels and possums, didn't educate their children and were really dangerous.
When he called somebody a hillbilly, he didn't mean the same thing the preppies at school meant when they called him a hillbilly, that's for sure. And I'm sure there are people we call socons who know real socons and don't think of themselves that way.
We get a good taste of them from the marriage is between a man and a woman crowd, and the why does Reason blame America for everything first bunch...
REally? Where is that? The only posters on here who don't think gay marriage is the most important civil rights issue since slavery are me, GKC and sarcasmic. And none of us are posting any racist shit. In even claiming that we should leave gay marriage up to the states, I am an absolute piriah on this board and considered nothing but a secret SOCON. I cannot recall a single post anywhere on here claiming marriage can only be between men and women and any poster beyond the ones I mention who doesn't think I am the focus of evil in the modern world for not believing there is an equal protection right to gay marriage.
Where are the people who do that here beyond the ones who live in your head Ken? I am sure not seeing them.
"And I'm sure there are people we call socons who know real socons and don't think of themselves that way."
lol
my moms extended family came from dirt-poor virginia. goat in the yard, cars on cinderblocks. they always talked shit about the 'rednecks and hillbillys' down the road. They were middle-class, you see; because they all worked @ the mill, whereas those dirt-scratching folk sold chitterlings and hogs feet by the bucketload from a roadside stall.
Everything is relative, indeed. Which is why i think its funny John says he's never seen any 'social conservatives'. I'm no 'bo', but i will confess to have perhaps seen one or two before.
Gilmore,
There are tons of SOCONs in the country. Millions and millions of them. They just don't post on this board. Go find me one SOCON post on this board.
I guess it depends on your definition. If you think anyone who doesn't think gay marriage is the most important civil rights issue like ever is a SOCON, then I guess we have a few. But as I define a SOCON, we don't have a single poster here and not even any convincing sock puppets. They just don't come here.
I probably qualify as a SoCon - I certainly think the government should recognize the man/woman version of marriage, and no other version. If anyone else here holds that view, they can feel free to come out of the closet.
Yet to paraphrase George Orwell, I think some here use "SoCon" as a general synonym for "something not desirable."
"some here use "SoCon" as a general synonym for "something not desirable.""
And "neocon" means REPUBLICAN WAR!!!
(nevermind that 'neoconservatism' is entirely reliant on a very-liberal wilsonian foreign policy tradition of 'spreading democracy'...)
I was in New Market, and there used to be a lot of "hill folk" that lived in Skyline Drive. They'd lived up there since...before the American Revolution.
Every so many years, or so, the park service would go through and chase them out, and all of a sudden, there was this family of 'em standing by the side of the road near our school.
We raised a collection for them, got them in a nearby house and bought them all the basic appliances, etc. When they went back to check on them a couple of weeks later, they'd pulled all of the appliances into the back yard, opened them up, filled them with dirt, and had planted vegetables in them.
They disappeared a few weeks later.
It was hard to understand what they were saying, but they said you could hear some archaic English, with archaic uses of the second person plural, etc. Anyway, say whatever else you want about them--I'd say they're libertarians!
They've sort of got their own little Free State Project out there!
"It was hard to understand what they were saying, but they said you could hear some archaic English, with archaic uses of the second person plural, etc. "
My mom did her master's @ UVA on something to do with how the Appalachian hill people still spoke 17th century low-country English. Not quite 'middle-english', but something damn close to it.
the heroic linguist might know wtf that's called, but its a thing.
I have family out in the middle of Central Texas. The more rural I go, the narrower the definition of redneck is.
Perhaps 'socon' is the wrong word = what do you call the race-trolls who populate VDare.com comments, follow their writers everywhere else, and constantly attempt pseudo scientific arguments about genetic enculturation, etc?
You may want to disavow the slimeballs, and i can understand that; and i also believe you're right about a good proportion of them being shills. particularly ones that use adjectives like "Faggoty" for no particular reason. There are a few that try to insinuate themselves into conversations and turn the tone significantly nastier
but there's at least an equal amount of real-McCoy racist douchebags from the Paleolibertarian crowds who do drive-bys here. I've seen it happen consistently for years. You can't tell me they don't exist.
If there is any racist shit to be posted on here that is not some leftist douche bag using a sock puppet, it would be from paleocons and Rothbard types. I haven't seen that yet, but that I would believe. But those people are not SOCONS. The Rothbard types claim to be Libertarians.
So yeah, I will give you those types.
And the curious strangers that wander in will read their comments and think they're libertarians.
That is the point Ken. And it is what tells you they are not SOCONS but leftists who are posting it. It is an old leftist trick to use sock puppets to discredit an enemy board.
I wish you were right.
I guess we'll see.
Progressive sock puppets will have a hard time mimicking socons. When a progressive mimics a socon, it reads like something they saw on the The Daily Show.
Real racist socons don't act like that. I don't think progressives can grok it much less imitate it.
All of the racist posts I have seen read just like that. I have yet to see any racist post that wasn't obviously some douche bag mouthing Dailey Show talking points of what the racist Right thinks.
Maybe I have missed them, but I haven't seen one believable post.
Google pay 97$ per hour my last pay check was $8500 working 1o hours a week online. My younger brother friend has been averaging 12k for months now and he works about 22 hours a week. I cant believe how easy it was once I tried it out.
This is wha- I do...... ?????? http://www.jobsfish.com
Ok, this shit has gone beyond retarded and reckless. They "peaceful" demonstration in Ferguson was bad enough. They expect the president to do what, exactly? And on the grounds that "we voted for you"? There are plenty of police transgressions to be upset about that are committed routinely, but the killing of an aggressive thug that (by best guess) assaulted a cop is not one of those things.
