Tonight's live episode of The Independents (Fox Business Network, 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT, repeats three hours later) features the debut appearance on the show of beloved former Reason staffer Radley Balko, who will talk about an issue that's been burning up this here blog all week: the horrendous drug-cop assault on 19-month-old Bounkham Phonesavanh, who may not survive this latest flash-grenade bust in the War on Drugs.

The Party Panel tonight consists of Fox News correspondent (and former Navy pilot) Lea Gabrielle and comedian/singer Tom Shillue, who will lead the show by talking about the increasingly bizarre story of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's release from five years of Taliban captivity, then later touch on Attorney General Eric Holder's new push to crack down on domestic terrorists, plus Seattle's new $15 minimum wage.

Washington Examiner columnist Tim Carney will come on to talk about the crony-capitalism implications of the administration's new Environmental Protection Agency regulations on carbon. Brian Wise from the United States Consumer Coalition will discuss the allegedly politicized law enforcement behind Operation Choke Point. And the co-hosts will ponder the legality of President Obama's prisoner-swap.

Aftershow begins on foxbusiness.com/independents just after 10. Follow The Independents on Facebook at facebook.com/IndependentsFBN, follow on Twitter @ independentsFBN, we'll use your best Tweets during the show, and click on this page for more video of past segments.

80 years ago Hitler broadcast television around the world, and now we have < i The Independents. Coincidence? But all made up for by the appearance Mr. Balko. Although he does always seem to get invited to weigh in on the worst of things. So in conclusion, Go Team Independents!

    1. kibby   11 years ago

      Did you have a stroke?

    2. Episiarch   11 years ago

Oh please. Hitler didn’t cause The Independents, he was just the inspiration for it. Stop being such a drama queen.

      1. Fist of Etiquette   11 years ago

Oh, I don’t recognize those other two posts. They weren’t concise and on topic like mine.

  4. GILMORE   11 years ago

If Kennedy interrupts Balko, I think he’s perfectly in his rights to sit silently and stare at her until she apologizes.

    1. Episiarch   11 years ago

Isn’t that what Radley does normally?

      1. GILMORE   11 years ago

Normally he sets his stare to “death”, whereas with former colleagues i believe he will simply “stun”

        1. Episiarch   11 years ago

          “Set stare to ‘rivet’.”

    2. Bobarian   11 years ago

Punch her in the nutz? Ain’t that Balko’s thing?

    3. Grand Moff Serious Man   11 years ago

Based on his Twitter avatar he does have a freakishly large head.

      1. GILMORE   11 years ago

Its the layers of Kevlar bonded to his skull.

Speculations regarding his relation to Benjamin Grimm are entirely unfounded.

  5. Andrew S.   11 years ago

Radley’s going to be on the show tonight?

Thanks for the warning. At least I’ll have 20 minutes to get my triple-strength kevlar-lined cup. Though I’m not sure that’s going to be enough.

    1. Slammer   11 years ago

Knowing Balko he’ll hit your sack from behind.

  6. Slammer   11 years ago

Hey Welch, what cspan footage is the Balko pic from?

    1. GILMORE   11 years ago

I believe that is from when Congress asked if Radley would take over as President of the United States, or simply be Dictator if he so chose, and he humbly deferred that this would be a violation of procedure and not appropriate at this time.

  7. GILMORE   11 years ago

Also, the ‘after-show’ (& noted lack thereof) yesterday requires apologies. Sincere and humble apologies. Groveling may even be warranted.

    1. Ted S.   11 years ago

  10. Max Power   11 years ago

Balko is the best. I love how he’s moving up to bigger and bigger publications and just keeps dogging the same scumbags (like Hayne/West). Dude’s tenacious.

    1. GILMORE   11 years ago

They say you have to cut his head off before the jaws release.

Except that his neck is made of titanium, so that’s considered a bad idea too.

Fuck that tune. It has been forever poisoned by some church my mother dragged me to that sang “Give glory to God, church, give glory to God…” to that melody. Damn you. Damn you to hell for bringing back that painful memory. Grrrr. I will never say hello to you. Ever!

  13. Sevo   11 years ago

First, one of you folks (think it was a guy) suggested Candide. Just finished it; amusing and now I recognize the source of some common references. Plus the end has a lot to recommend it.

And then: I’ve yet to see any reason/excuse/justification/rationale for Obo to do that prisoner swap. It seems move with all downside and no up, which a slimy politico like Obo rarely makes. What gives?

    1. Bobarian   11 years ago

I think Gilmore made the recommendation, I concurred.

As to the O and his keepers, I think they’re so used to media spin working for them, they got cocky, and finally went too far.

      1. Sevo   11 years ago

“As to the O and his keepers, I think they’re so used to media spin working for them, they got cocky, and finally went too far.”

And the media (the SF Chron for example) is hiding a couple of paragraphs on pg 10 under the fold, but the TV and innerwebz seems to have no choice but to cover it.
And, even then, why did he do it? Just a lark to see what he could get away with? Are his parents big-time contributors to some Idaho D?

    2. Virginian   11 years ago

Honestly, I think they dismissed the accusations of desertion as just a rightwing conspiracy theory. I think that the people in the White House are just progtards. They believe their own bullshit.

    3. Dances-with-Trolls   11 years ago

      What gives?

      2 lines of thought.

      1) They are just that incompetent and this totally took them by surprise. (Always a possibility)

      2) They want people to be talking about anything besides the VA thing and this is the sort of controversy that they know their foot soldiers and useful idiots are always up for.

    4. GILMORE   11 years ago

      a) me

      b) some have noted that the discussions about when/how to do some kind of swap (or whatever) to recover the guy had been ongoing for a couple of *years*, and that the decision to suddenly ‘make it happen’ was completely done outside of the channels used leading up to the event. Clearly it was something that most (particularly the congresspeople who had oversight over the act) people thought would be done ‘as quietly as possible’ in order to minimize the fact that the US was doing deals with Hostage-Takers.

So, what seems obvious is that the decision to do so was entirely calculated to be done PRECISELY so that it would be a ‘big news item’.

Why? They’re fucking idiots, i dont know.

Candide should be required reading for all of those social environmental studies majors (CAGW) out there. It has experts and everything.

      1. Sevo   11 years ago

        “It has experts and everything.”

LOTS of them. And a country with the streets paved in gold!

  14. Virginian   11 years ago

So finally started the Wire. It’s pretty good so far. Only one episode in though.

    1. Episiarch   11 years ago

Stick with it, it’s worth it. The performances are what really stand out, though. Omar is one of the greatest characters ever, and String is pretty awesome too. And Clay Davis (I think that was his name): SHIIIIIIIITTTT.

Also, Littlefinger is the mayor in one of the seasons.

      1. Virginian   11 years ago

        Haha Mayor O’Malley Carcetti?

    2. MJGreen   11 years ago

It’s a great show. You should be fully hooked by episode 5.

Related! I saw Rawls (McNulty’s commanding officer) on the subway a couple hours ago.

      1. Slammer   11 years ago

He comes in our bookstore infrequently. So does Buscemi and PATRICK STEWART.

        1. MJGreen   11 years ago

An acquaintance sees Stewart pretty frequently. I must hang around the wrong parts of Brooklyn.

Oddly, I’ve seen Peter Dinklage a number of times now.

  15. Zombie Shane   11 years ago

Seattle’s minimum wage increase must scare libertarians will provide even more evidence their ideology is bullshit based on that utopianism. Sure, some people will loose their jobs, and unemployment will be a little higher than in other cities. Libertarians will obsess over this difference, but it will be small, the vast majority of workers will see their wage rise. And the people, seeing this, will reject libertarianism like they always do.

    1. Sevo   11 years ago

      ^Sarc? Stupidity?

    2. C. Anacreon   11 years ago

Too close to showtime for trolls, sorry.

    3. Irish   11 years ago

This has to be a troll because no actual progressive would admit that raising the minimum wage would result in people losing their jobs.

The prog-line is that raising the minimum wage actually creates jobs due to Keynesian stimulus.

      1. C. Anacreon   11 years ago

He didn’t say anyone would lose a job, but that they would “loose” a job.
I think that he means the jobs get more relaxing with a higher minimum wage.

      2. Zombie Shane   11 years ago

You don’t actually read “prog” sources, you read libertarian summaries of pro sources.

In any case I’m not a prog and don’t think Keynesian stimulus works like that.

        1. Irish   11 years ago

I read prog sources every day. I’ve read Raw Story articles that flatly state that raising the minimum wage will result in stimulus that will create jobs.

          Example 1

          Example 2

One of those is from the Atlantic, one is from HuffPo…both major left-wing news sources.

Apparently I know more about progressive economic thought than you do. Sort of like how I know more about economics and Venezuela.

          1. Zombie Shane   11 years ago

Another example of a country with “socialist” policies that thrives is Japan:

            2. NotAnotherSkippy   11 years ago

Do you know any Japanese? Have you been to Japan? have you even read about their lost decades?

              Kutabare.

            3. Irish   11 years ago

Yeah, 20 years of slack economic growth, a demographic catastrophe, the highest suicide rate in the world, an entire generation of young men who have such serious anxiety they’re afraid to leave their homes, and they’re already starting to get bullied around by China.

              Quite the success story.

Also, you posted an article from something called the ‘Post-Autistic Economic Review.’ It sounds very reputable.

I also think it’s hilarious that you used France having a higher per capita GDP as evidence of your arguments, but Japan having a $5000 lower per capita GDP than America proves nothing.

You want to know where randomly jacking up the minimum wage in lieu of economic growth has worked splendidly?

      That paradise on Earth, Venezuela.

During a workers’ rally commemorating May Day, Maduro told the crowd the raises were fresh evidence of the success of the country’s socialist revolution. “In the 15 years of the Revolution, we have given, in accordance with our socialist program and constitutional mandate, 25 salary hikes and 25 pension increases,” Maduro said during a nationally televised address.

What Maduro neglected to say was that the increases are necessary to keep pace with the country’s inflation rate, which at 56 percent last year was the highest in the world.

Democrats: Adopting the failed policies of banana-republic thugs and hysterically claiming they’re ‘progressive.’

        1. Irish   11 years ago

Point me to the economic policies Venezuela has implemented that progressives wouldn’t love to implement.

If Venezuela is Communist, then a whole wing of the Democratic party is equally Communist.

          1. Zombie Shane   11 years ago

Most of them? Democrats want a European style social democracy. You know, those collapsing basket cases like Germany or the Netherlands. Of course they won’t get it because of America’s racial demographics.

Or France where the French people are finding a neo-fascist party more tolerable than the Socialists and their policies.

              1. Zombie Shane   11 years ago

I notice the pattern that apart from horribly repressive communist societies the main determinate of a nation’s wealth is the race of the population.

France has a slightly higher GDP per capita than the UK:

                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L…..ies_by_GDP (nominal)_per_capita

French people are concerned about the high amount of Black and Islamic immigrants. The French neocon party didn’t do well either.

                1. Andrew S.   11 years ago

Ah, progressive racism. Party of Woodrow Wilson, after all.

Wow, you’re really obsessed with France having a slightly higher per capita GDP than the UK.

Again, I’m not sure why this is supposed to matter to me given that I think England is way too far to the left as well.

You’re basically telling me one country I don’t like is slightly less shitty than another country I don’t like, a fact which doesn’t exactly disturb me.

Like, “son, the sky is blue because of water vapor/refraction/jesus has blue eyes and he’s watching/unicorns”

And since that’s your thesis, are you suggesting the only solution for America is if the Vikings invade?

Israel is East Asian. Germany is Jewish. Japan is Nordic.

The solution for America’s problems was to stop importing the third world. Now, well, we are doomed.

                    4. Irish   11 years ago

Given that America’s per capita GDP is higher than Japan, Germany, and Israel, despite the fact that we have large black and hispanic populations, shouldn’t that prove how wonderful American economic policy has been?

I mean, we became rich despite having loads of ‘inferiors.’ The fact that Japan became wealthy while having all Japanese ubermensch doesn’t prove their policies work. The fact that we became even richer despite being a mongrel breed of miscegnated fiends, on the other hand, is a pretty good sign that our policies are superior.

It’s almost like you didn’t consider that your two arguments clearly contradict each other.

That’s because you’re a racist idiot. Now tell me again how France’s land is the secret to wealth.

One communist country, and then a bunch of “ethnic” countries. France has a slightly higher per capita GDP than Britain. Facts that make libertarians cry:

Why would this make libertarians cry? The British were a flat out socialist country from 1945-1980 and their economy completely stagnated throughout the ’70s.

France, meanwhile, has seen their per capita GDP stagnant since turning full socialist in the ’80s, at which point they also had a 7% or higher unemployment rate for the next 30 years.

So your argument is that a country that became socialist in 1980 and has had 7%-10% unemployment ever since is slightly better than a country that was socialist for most of the post-war era.

Somehow one left-wing country out competing another left-wing country is supposed to make me upset? Tell me, what’s America’s per capita GDP compared to France? How about Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland and Singapore?

                      LEGACY OF SOCIALISM!

Are you arguing that a country’s poverty 30 years ago has no impact on their wealth today? Because Chile has one of the highest economic growth rates of the last 30 years, but still isn’t very wealthy because they were dirt poor back in the ’70s.

Are you really so stupid that you don’t realize a countries wealth today is not just a function of their policies today, but is a function of the wealth accumulated in the past? Is this too difficult a concept for the mouth breather to grasp?

I can’t find the graph now, but prior to Thatcher, Britain had a lower per capita GDP than Italy. The fact that they’re now close to France and Germany shows that their, admittedly moderate, move to the right has worked.

Also, France doesn’t seem to be doing too hot lately.

Given that France has actually seen their economy contract over the last 4 years, and is currently falling back into a recession, should you really be holding them up as evidence of your successful policies?

I don’t even know where you get this stuff. I’m pretty sure the fact that the French are richer has something to do with the fact that they had approximately a 100 year jump on Hong Kong when it comes to the industrial revolution and are in the middle of Europe which has, throughout almost all of history, provided vastly better trade and economic opportunities.

You’re right though: It’s probably because the French land magically makes them rich. That’s why inland China, Mongolia, and Tibet are so filthy rich. All that fucking land.

Just checked the figures. Israel’s defense budget is 16 billion, 3 billion of which is courtesy of the American taxpayer.

USA is 4.6% of GDP, Israel is 6.9% Without the US picking up 20% of the tab, their figures would be close to equivalent.

Japan has a total debt-to-GDP in excess of 200%. Sure, they owe it to “themselves,” but are you going to steal all of that money by defaulting on it? Japan is a deeply troubled country, which is sad because it’s also a very interesting country. Israel is propped up by the West and has played very fast and loose with respect for IP. The only one of the examples you gave that can be said to be “thriving” is Germany.

Sort of like when I pointed out how much more successful free market countries are and American’s response was to claim that land magically makes people rich.

No explanation as to why large tracts of land hasn’t turned Mexico and eastern Russia into economic powerhouses.

It’s also funny because his new ‘land makes people rich!’ argument flies completely contrary to his arguments about how great Japan is. How can Japan be well off if the key to prosperity is shitloads of land?

Instead of getting a dryer, consider using a clothes rack. It takes about 12 hours for clothes to dry at room temperature, but it’s totally silent. I’ve been using racks to dry for several months because the communal dryers at my apartment complex are broken.

    1. Ted S.   11 years ago

Install a sauna, and set up the clothes rack in the sauna room (just make certain the clothes don’t hit the stones on the sauna heater). The Finns I know say the sauna is naturally the dryest room in a Finnish house. And you have a sauna as a benefit.

      1. Derpetologist   11 years ago

The Independents Attire Review, 3 June 2014

    K-Edition

    – Kennedy: We’ve said we like her in Red. Tonight we have Layers of Red. It does wonders. She’s got skin that begs for big splashes of bright colors, and things like this do her so very, very well. Our only complaint is that her mic seems to want to pull her blouse off while giving her a hickey.

    – Matt: Holy shite, Dolomite: Matt…wears white shirt…. with Normal Tie… and not only ‘a’ white shirt, but unless my reception is *really* fucked up, lightly striped/textured shit? Whatever the case may be: Halle-berry-luiah! We’ve begged (seemingly hopelessly) for Matt to at least *try* being Normal (“you’ll like it!”) on the odd-occasion, and here we finally get what we’d be asking for. Question for my peers – Was I Wrong? I personally think its a clear improvement. Thoughts?

    – Kmele: We’ve noted Kmele’s weekly employment of plaids/checked shirts, and his ability to make otherwise ‘challenging’ patterns work well. The rules we’ve latched onto are: “careful about colors”, and “make sure the jacket is casual-enough”. We think he’s spot on with the former, and tempting danger with the latter; regardless, he fails to fail. The lingering memory of his lavender colored jacket from Friday, however, remains paiful.

Kmele: Cats are more libertarian than dogs.

    1. Hyperion   11 years ago

Well, cats ARE more libertarian than dogs. Tonight when I was driving home from work, I was at a stoplight a couple miles from home, and I noticed a lady walking her dog on the sidewalk. Then I noticed that there was a cat walking with them. The cat was definitely with them, keeping pace, but doing his own thing. No leash, of course. He would run ahead a little, sit down, and wait. Then join back in, looking all so cool and independent the entire time.

      1. Rufus J. Firefly   11 years ago

        Cats rule.

    2. GILMORE   11 years ago

This is why no one likes Cats.

      1. Bobarian   11 years ago

This is why there are no female cats?

        1. GILMORE   11 years ago

You clearly haven’t met many cats.

    1. Bam!   11 years ago

That kind of stuff has been going on for ages. Under the Bush administration, it was used against porn sites.

      1. Hyperion   11 years ago

Yep, it’s just that it’s coming out more and more. The really disturbing thing is that as the mask comes completely off, we find that the team players don’t care, as long as their team is winning. As I’ve said many times, Obama could go on national TV and bite the heads off of live puppies and kitties and say it’s a sacrifice to Satan, and no one who is already on his team, would even consider it offensive.

        1. Derpetologist   11 years ago

I’ve pointed out to progs that Obama got millions in donations from Goldman Sachs. They don’t care.

          1. Hyperion   11 years ago

Of course not. It’s ok when their guy does it because it’s for the right reasons.

        2. GILMORE   11 years ago

” no one who is already on his team, would even consider it offensive.”

          INCORRECT

first they’d point out that BUSH DID IT FIRST, and they were VIRGIN KITTENS! AND MORE OF THEM!

then they’d say “YOURE ONLY ANGRY BECAUSE FAKE SCANDAL!! EVERYONE KNOWS KITTENS DIE!!? OH, NOW YOU’RE ANGRY, MAYBE BECAUSE *HEs BLACK*?? RACIST!

Then they’d go, ALSO, IT SHOWS HOW KITTENS ARE ACTUALLY KIND OF A PROBLEM AND MAYBE WE SHOULD SERVE THEM AT LUNCH MORE OFTEN BECAUSE LIKE KITTEN SUSHI IS POPULAR IN JAPAN AND ISRAEL AND IT WORKS THERE!!?? UPTWINKLES!!

          1. Hyperion   11 years ago

Well, at least, Shreeky would say that. Most of them just wouldn’t even care to discuss it, like I said.

To be fair, I think the basis of his presidency was to up Valerie Jarrett’s Chicago property by bringing in the Olympics and to get a bunch of free rounds of golf. Also because his circle told him he should be president.

  110. Hyperion   11 years ago

I’m not even sure why we are talking about this prisoner swap. It’s already too clear, has been for too long. Obama can do whatever he wants to. There is literally nothing that he can do that will lead to even the slightest consequences.

The progs had their moment of genius when they got this guy elected. The first black president, at the perfect time in history.

But like all cults of insanity, they will go too far because they cannot conceive of their own downfall, or how swiftly it will overcome them.

  111. GILMORE   11 years ago

I reiterate = the aftershow is in fact a more watchable format than the ‘show-show’

They actually talk about topics. CRAZY IDEA!?

    2. Bam!   11 years ago

It has been consistently true and a bit perplexing. It’s not that much different than some of the segments.

      1. GILMORE   11 years ago

Its the part of the show that “doesn’t give me a headache”

Maybe because Kennedy doesn’t need to be amped up @99,000RPM and ready to pounce on everyone’s breathing.

        1. Bam!   11 years ago

The real show has structure and a schedule. The after show doesn’t, I think. Wonder if they could stick with topics and segments when they were working instead of rigidly following the schedule, we’d get a better end product.

          1. Bobarian   11 years ago

“The real show has structure and a schedule.”

I also had a bad experience with edible pot about a year ago. The friend who made it later told me that there was about an ounce of THC in a single brownie. .

Thanks for pointing out that, without regulation, the THC could be concentrated on one side of the brownie, since these products are whipped up by hand.

…Maybe one day corporations will make a pot brownie or candy bar where everything is identically made and distributed. When it reaches that point, and appears in a package with high quality graphics, I pass.

The candy makers are the same ones who bring us chemicals, refined sugar (often made from sugar beets), and God knows how many flavor enhancers and preservatives.

Better to just smoke a little weed with friends and know that it was also grown organically by friends. That’s possible even under the new legislation. When it’s smoked, we need to know that it doesn’t include things like Roundup from the guerrilla growers, like those in the National Forests here in California. If there’s a new corporate pot king in Colorado, he won’t have to disclose what awful substances his product is being dosed with. Stick to the real people. They’re better to get high with, too.
