NYPD Cops Can't Stop Drunkenly Shooting at People This Week

There's a saying that if something happens once it's a fluke, twice it's a coincidence, and three times it's a trend. It would seem, then, that the latest trendy thing for New York City cops is to get drunk and shoot at people. Within a recent span of seven days:
- On Wednesday, April 23, NYPD Detective Jay Poggi got drunk and accidently shot his partner in the wrist with a .38 revolver. Instead of calling an ambulance, Poggi decided to personally drive his wounded partner to the hospital—netting him a DWI after he blew a .113 on a blood alcohol test. Investigators believe the shooting occurred when the on-duty officers, who had just consumed 11 beers apiece, were firing the gun in the air.
- On Tuesday, April 29, NYPD Officer Brendan Cronin got wasted, got behind the wheel of his car, and while stopping at a red light took the opportunity to fire 13 shots at a nearby car for no apparent reason. The man driving the other car wound up taking six of these bullets, with one just missing his head. (He is now in stable condition.) A witness called 911 as Cronin fled the scene with his hazard lights blinking. When cops caught up with Cronin not long after, he was still driving with the hazards on and said he didn't remember firing his gun.
- On Wednesday, April 30, off-duty NYPD Sgt. Wanda Anthony drunkenly shot at a woman's car outside of New Jersey strip club in what's being labled a "domestic dispute."
The week before all these shootings, another three off-duty NYPD officers were charged with driving under the influence. In a press conference this week, NYPD Commissioner William Bratton admitted that perhaps the department had a "problem of inappropriate use of alcohol by members of the department."
Also last week—right around the time Detective Poggi was tying one on and firing his gun in the air like some sort of old-timey prospector—the NYPD's social media team asked people to tweet photos of themselves with city cops, using the hashtag #MyNYPD. They were surprised when the results weren't entirely positive.

Thank God these asshats were at least highly trained in the use of their firearms. Imagine the carnage if they weren't highly trained?
Oh and by the way this
is quality snark.
+1 yeeee-haw!
"Dance, Spider! Dance, you little prick!"
Now the psychos are joining the NYPD instead of the mafia.
They were just rehearsing for the auditions for Superbad 2.
Two myths about cops, and especially NYC cops:
1. They are experts regarding firearms.
2. They can drive a vehicle with great skill.
Cops are neither. Never believe the hype.
Regarding 1.,
http://www.pointshooting.com/randinfo.htm
To back this up, take a look at the Jose Guerena video. A handful of highly trained officers crowd the front doorway and fire dozens of rounds down a narrow hallway from a similar distance to the pistol range - mostly missing wildly.
Paper targets and something that is shooting back (or that you imagine is shooting back in the case of the late Mr. Guerena) are completely different animals. The ability to reliably hit paper targets on the range is definitely a prerequisite, but it is hardly all the training they need.
This is why only the police should carry guns.
Well naturally. Civilians with guns are a danger to society.

When did police stop being civilians?
Around the time police officers started patrolling "sectors" instead of neighborhoods, I think.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/civilian
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/civilian
They are but I think the definition has evolved. And when people like Feinstein want to treat them differently than someone who isn't a cop, it only reinforces that. Maybe they're civilians when not on duty?
Oh no - they still have full law enforcement powers even when off-duty. Hell, in most places even retiring doesn't strip them of all their privileges.
When they stopped being "peace officers" and became "law enforcement officers."
FTA in the NY Post:
"He was arrested and charged with assault."
You have got to be fucking kidding me. Attempted murder with a firearms enhancer.
Attempted murder with a firearms enhancer.
Not for the King's Men, hell no.

So how long of paid vacation did he get?
Just long enough to hammer out a shiny new medal for him!
Firearms were discharged.
Rounds impacted objects and collaterally damaged civilians.
Objects were impacted and subsequently collaterally damaged civilians were observed.
Procedures were followed
Honestly, this isn't surprising. People who join the NYPD do so because they know they will be little kings and queens of NYC. They get to carry guns (and almost no one else gets to legally), they can flout laws all day, and no one can fuck with them. They join because they're joining the biggest gang in one of the biggest cities in the world. Of course some of them are going to do retarded shit in excess...because they normally can. The only reason these weren't buried is that there were several of them all at once and some of them were so egregious that they had to be dealt with. But I guarantee you there are a ton more drunk NYPD officers threatening people at bars or throwing their weight around or just generally being assholes every day, they just don't go so far as to shoot up cars with people in them.
In the criminal justice system the people are victimized by two separate, yet equally important groups. The police who drunkenly initiate crime and the District Attorneys who protect the offenders. These are their stories.
DONG DONG
Double dong?
Double-ender?
"Clean-up on aisle busted."
+1 =)
This means that we have to never allow legal pot. Just imagine if those cops would have been stoned instead of drunk. They could have hit more people with those shots!
OT: Boston is still terribly racist.
I award Bruins fans three and a half Classless Subbans as a result of their shenanigans.
This can't be true, as Boston is about 105% Democrats
Huh, Chicago is 214% Democrat.
But don't criticize them, because Boston Strong.
"You've lost your fucking mind, Jimmy. Look at you. Half-lit every third night, dead drunk every second."
+1 western district way
MCNULTY!
The fuck did I do?
These examples of senseless gun violence underscore why we need to seize privately-owned guns and triple the police force!

Charges that will be quietly dropped after the media buzz dies down, followed by reinstatement with back pay.
Fuck, I wanna party with this guy. Er, wait. No, not party with. What's the word I was looking for? ...Oh, right, drown in a bucket. I wanna drown this guy in a bucket.
Eleven beers between the two, or eleven apiece? If the former, NYPD hires lightweights.
Silver lining = I'm pleasantly shocked that drunk driving cops would be subjected to breathalyzers like us civilians.
So Superbad was a documentary?
No, this is worse. At least they only shot at their own car.
Those cops were charming, and didn't arrest a single party-goer.
Are these officers getting the union protections they deserve?
the on-duty officers, who had just consumed 11 beers apiece
They sell beer in NYC donut shops?
As a natural extension of Bloomberg's soda policy, the city department of health banned donuts roughly six months ago.
Starbucks serves beer and wine? and Starbucks has replaced the donut shop as the hangout of choice of cops in LA.
Another reason to avoid Starbucks.
Fogell: Can we shoot at it?
Officer Slater: I don't know...
[pause]
Officer Slater: Can you?

Interesting that none of the articles are in The Newspaper Of Record.
They'll be on it as soon as they can figure out a way to explain that this is all the fault of Republicans and/or the Koch brothers.
It shouldn't be that hard, considering that Rudy Guiliani is a Republican.
And Bloomberg is a lifelong republican too. don't forget the Bloomster.
Actually, no, he's not. He switched parties to Republican run for Mayor in the first term and switched again to independent in the second term.
From the other article:
"Sullivan, a 12-year veteran, underwent a second surgery last weekend. It's not clear if he ever will be able to fire a weapon."
Well, that's a shame.
Put him on the bomb squad.
Put him on parking detail. And make him wear the skirt, hose, and heels.
It's good to be the "alpha" male.
Baboons.
With guns.
Tangental: Bill requiring court order for cellphone tracking clears Minnesota House 120-0
"Under law enforcement's urging, the legislation was stripped of all references to "search warrant," and replaced with "court order" and "tracking warrant" in a move that troubled civil liberties advocates who say the new language could render the laws toothless."
All police unions and fraternal organizations that lobby the legislature should be outlawed. Those that remain should be RICOed.
NYPD Commissioner William Bratton admitted that perhaps the department had a "problem of inappropriate use of alcohol by members of the department."
It's pretty stressful, never knowing if you'll live to see your family at the end of your shift.
IT'S A WAR OUT THERE!
Did he admit that they have a problem with inappropriate use of firearms yet?
You got Ted S'ed!
On Tuesday, April 29, NYPD Officer Brendan Cronin got wasted, got behind the wheel of his car, and while stopping at a red light took the opportunity to fire 13 shots at a nearby car for no apparent reason.
At least Curly Bill had the excuse of opium.
Too bad the other car's driver didn't waste that piece of shit. Of course, this is New York where all the peasants are unarmed.
Maybe a problem with inappropriate use of firearms too?
Just boil it down it "inappropriate use" and you've got it.
Well, at least they weren't shooting dogs.
New York has, what, 50,000 cops? 3 bad apples can't be used to condemn the entire department. It's the thousands and thousands of other stories of abuse, assault and theft that should get the department disbanded.
This post is a complete outrage! They weren't drunkenly firing their guns at anything moved, they were shooting back at people using those lethal iPhone guns!
This is just awful. Some of those bullets might have ricocheted and stuck Officer Cronin, tainting him with someone else's blood! I sure hope he gets tested before returning to duty.
This seems cut and dry. If I posted this on Facebook who would disagree that these stories are really bad?
*sigh*
Cop wives of course.
I can hear it now. Why is the writer so mean to police? This looks bad, but we don't know the whole story. Police live stressful lives sometimes they make mistakes, but in the end they are only there to protect you!!
I believe cops have made the argument that they should be allowed to drink and drive because job stress, officer safety and all that damned accountability that's weighing them down.
Fuck that. And fuck them, too.
"There's a saying that if something happens once it's a fluke, twice it's a coincidence, and three times it's a trend enemy action."
FTFY.
"They were surprised when the results weren't entirely positive."
You mean civilians don't enjoy our heavy-handed, jackbooted, thuggish approach to "peace keeping"??
'Suspicious': Sober driver arrested for drunk driving after deputy runs stop sign and crashes into her car
[...]
In Deputy Quiles' original report, he claimed that he came to a full stop at the stop sign and never saw Weyker's headlights (Weyker's car's headlights were automatic). However, airport surveillance footage surfaced two days after the crash and refuted Quiles' first account, showing him rolling through the stop sign. Even though this evidence showed Quiles was at fault, Weyker was still sent threatening letters by the county saying legal action would be taken if she didn't pay for the damages.
Ten months after the accident, after a Sheriff's Office internal investigation, Quiles admitted that his first statements were wrong and that he was at fault for the accident. Quiles was suspended for nine days for the accident, but never punished for his false report, despite, WITI notes, "a previous history of discipline for filing reports written by someone else."
Sounds like a whoile lot of crazy smack to me dude.

A problem? The problem would be that fact that these people are "public".
