New York and California Suck For Taxpayers, and For Freedom
New York and California are the worst and second worst states in terms of tax burden, in what is less than shocking news from the financial website, WalletHub. The ranking tallies annual state and local taxes, and puts the Golden State and the Empire State at the bottom of the heap, with Wyoming and Alaska at the top as the two least burdensome states for taxpapers in a listing that also includes the District of Columbia (number 37, if you're curious).
In and of itself, the ranking is helpful—but it's also helpful to cross-reference the tax ranking with separate rankings of economic liberty and overall freedom to see how they correlate. The result is a handy guide to places to live—or avoid like the plague.
For its tax rankings, WalletHub compared: real estate tax, state income tax, local income tax, vehicle property tax, vehicle sales tax, sales and use tax, fuel tax, alcohol tax, food tax, and telecom tax.
The five top-ranked states (least burdensome) are:
1. Wyoming: $2,365
2. Alaska: $2,791
3. Nevada: $3,370
4. Florida: $3,648
5. South Dakota: $3,766
The five at the bottom are:
47. Illinois: $9,006
48. Connecticut: $9,099
49. Nebraska: $9,450
50. California: $9,509
51. New York: $9,718
Adjusting for cost of living has some effect—Illinois rises to 38, and Nebraska to 37—but those are the biggest adjustments at the top and bottom, while D.C. and Hawaii plummet in the rankings. But those are the biggest shifts.
What's interesting, though, is how the WalletHub rankings compare to the Mercatus Center's state-by-state ratings of personal and economic freedom. Mercatus scores each state on over 200 issues encompassing fiscal policy, regulatory policy, and personal freedom. These include tax burden, property rights, marijuana laws, gun restrictions, government spending, occupational licensing, marriage freedom, and many more concerns.
Obviously, the final results of such rankings depend to some extent on how you weight each issue, and there's a lot of subjectivity inherent in such comparisons. But using Mercatus's overall score, the top five states for freedom are:
1. North Dakota
2. South Dakota
3. Tenessee
4. New Hampshire
5. Oklahoma
And the bottom of the barrel are:
46. Rhode Island
47. Hawaii
48. New Jersey
49. California
50. New York
As with the WalletHub rankings, you can hover your pointer over each state for scores.
My takeaway, for what it's worth: Stay the hell out of New York and California.

marriage freedom
Freedom from marriage?
The freest states allow wife-selling.
They've outlawed nagging mothers.
Obama: There goes our Obamacare implementation strategy! What have we got to fall back on Madame Secretary?
Sebellius: Stare into the center of this GIF and let your eyes lose focus
I like to point out the poor showing of some of the bluest of the blue states on personal freedom -- the very things that we're told to vote for Team Blue to protect.
Team Blue views freedom as the freedom to use force on others - the antithesis of liberty.
Modern Team Blue has a different vision of freedom. It's a kind of freedom with a lot of rules, regulations, forms to fill out and restrictions. And it has to be consistent with the State's interest in public health and safety.
Freedom is subject to change without notice. Freedom may be revoked at any time. This freedom not valid with any other offer. Freedom to expire in 2016. Enjoy your freedom.
More interesting is the correlation between lack of freedom/high taxes and high inequality. Amazing how all the red states have lower inequality than the blue states.
I'm not sure if it's because their beliefs have changed, or if it's just that they're older now and have different priorities, but the liberals of today are not the liberals of the 60s/70s. They've become communitarians. They transitioned from being pseudo-rebellious teenagers wanting to party at other peoples' expense, to control-freak parents and grandparents.

Are people being forced to stay in California and NY? Seems odd that the most liberty killing states are also the richest and most populous. Since everyone seems to want to live in these states and nobody is all that interested in North Dakota, perhaps these metrics are completely useless as a reflection of the things human beings actually care about?
Uh, New York and California are losing people in the aggregate. But yes, both New York and California have economic advantages that not even retarded progressive governance can fully destroy like it did to Detroit.
New York City and Silicon Valley are pretty idiot-proof, although the latter is probably more vulnerable to petty progressive bitterness about inequality and 'gentrification'.
Capitalism killed Detroit, and anyone saying otherwise is using racial code language.
Speaking of Silicon Valley smartest people are progressives. Conservatives can make money, but only if their daddies made it first. It seems.

"Capitalism killed Detroit, and anyone saying otherwise is using racial code language."
Anyone making that claim is a slimy lefty turd.
Wee how that works, slimy lefty turd?
Capitalism killed Detroit, and anyone saying otherwise is using racial code language.
When you say things like this I find it hard to keep taking you seriously.
Since when is "unions" a racial code word?
Yep, that clinches it: Tony is definitely a sock puppet.
If people can't see that from this recent set of absurdly dogmatic posts designed solely to elicit outrage, they're hopeless. It's so obviously designed to manipulate it might as well be a Lifetime channel movie.
Well, last week he did excuse genocide by governments because "well, governments also save lives." That was pretty much the nail in the coffin. No one could be at that much of a statism apologist.
But then... Poe's Law.
Tony has posted here before that he just likes to argue.
He has no convictions except to start arguments.
Well you certainly didn't waste any time making hilariously stupid statements.
You are very useful in reminding us on how progressives actually 'think' about these issues. Good God, it's racist to suggest Detroit's city government was corrupt, bloated, and managed that city into the ground.
Immediately went full retard.
Posts like this scream sock. I've doubted it in the past, but he's either a sock or the dumbest individual on the planet.
Troll, not sock-puppet.
Capitalism killed Detroit because anyone who says otherwise is racist.
That's stupid, even for you.
Also, Einstein was a socialist. Being good at physics doesn't make someone automatically good at economics.
Not that I would expect you to comprehend such concepts, considering you, like the rest of your progressive ilk, judge ideas based upon who said them instead of the merit of the idea itself. This is because you are too stupid to understand ideas, so you judge the people instead.
Fucking moron.
Aside from the stupidity of that comment, what do you think made Detroit?
Only the sort of "capitalism" that stops at Eight Mile Road, if suburban county population statistics mean anything. All of your thought-terminating cliches won't change facts.
Re: Tony,
I beg to differ. I can argue that the smartest people in Silicon Valley are libertarian or libertarian-leaning.
In the early days, most of the businesses there were notorious for trying to avoid messy entanglements with the federal government. In Seattle, Microsoft had a similar reputation, though that ended to some degree when the Clinton administration decided to prosecute a bullshit antitrust action against them.
Aww, but the bureaucrats and politicians were feeling so very lonely in DC without the techies coming to visit them.
The best region in the country (in terms of a combination of disposable income, freedom, low inequality, high IQ, low crime, etc) is the libertarian-leaning midwest/northwest region...from Idaho to Oklahoma but excluding the left-coasters Washington and Oregon.
'cause Detroit's full of 'Thugs'? Oh, fuck, you got me. DAMN!
Oh, on pins and needles waiting for the amplification of the first assertion.
tony our resident village Idiot has returned again to spew his own brand of stupidity
Unions killed Detroit
Liberal corruption killed Detroit
An outdated business plan that ignored foreign competition killed Detroit
Minories with their crime, and drugs killed detroit
You obviously haven't worked with these "smartest people" or you'd know just how uninformed you sound.
Even Coleman A. Young, the first black mayor of Detroit, knew what killed Detroit was the '67 race riot, you sucm-sucking troll.
Texas and Florida are populous but not progressive.
Yes. Florida is about to pass New York in population, I believe. And a lot of those people who are coming here are coming from there for some odd reason. Not the weather, because they didn't come down in these numbers before.
Well, the ravages of climate change weren't as racist then.
Heck, why would you come to a state that would be underwater if you have faith in catastrophic AGW?
The ones who don't make it all the way to FL appear to be setting up shop here in SC. In my county at least, we seem to be getting a lot of "We're going to fix your backward, redneck ways."
Ye gods.
Like they did in CO.
Escape the place they hate, only to bring it with them.
Same thing happening here in Nevada, especially in Vegas. I moved here from California to escape California's politics, but most of the people who made the same move left to escape the consequences of their voting patterns while bringing those patterns with them.
One example: they passed a ballot initiative outlawing smoking in bars. Every bartender I've spoken to hates the idea.
They don't hate it. At least, they don't think the reason why they left is connected to the politics they espouse. It is an affliction.
"Texas and Florida are populous but not progressive"
And California and New York aren't rich...
Median Household Income (adjusted for cost of living)
RANK - STATE - $$
#36 - California - $44,456
#44 - New York - $42,606
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.....ted_States
Why do people want to live in New York? Or do they?
AFAIK, the only reason to live in New York is to live in New York CITY, and that's solely to be able to go see Broadway shows and eat Chinese food at 3 AM.
I can see the appeal of that for six months, but I wouldn't want to settle down there. Besides, there are other places in the country you can do all of that. NYC is over-rated.
As for California, people like it because of the weather and the beaches and the mountains. They aren't flocking there to to get welfare.
Reasons to live in NYC (these are some of the reasons I have seen for people I knew who lived there):
1. Finance. You want to make a lot of money in finance? NYC.
2. Acting/modeling that isn't having to go to LA.
3. Theater (see #2).
4. Forming a band.
5. Software that isn't Seattle or Silicon Valley (Boston is tough because it's so college dominated).
6. Going to college there.
...and the biggest of all: moving from your podunk town to The Big Apple, because that's always been your dream, even though you're not sure what you're going to do there. You have no idea how many people this describes.
Then on top of this list, which is just off the top of my head, there are a lot of other specialized industries that people go to NYC for, like the garment industry, but that's not very many people.
"[L]ike the garment industry." You mean the mob, right?
moving from your podunk town to The Big Apple Williamsburg
ftfy
Have to disagree with #4 and #5, and probably #6 too.
#4. I've never heard of New York being a place with a great music scene. If you want to be a PAINTER, yeah, go to New York. If you want to form a band, you go to Seattle or LA, or anywhere in California, really.
#5. New York has no special concentration of tech jobs that any big city doesn't have. The Dulles tech corridor is probably a better bet.
#6. Columbia is just 1 of 7 Ivy League schools. And the others have better scenery.
"Columbia is just 1 of 7 Ivy League schools."
Who dropped out? I'm guessing Cornell.
Re: Tony,
Going by the HIGH rate of population loss, one could agree that nobody is being forced to stay - fortunately.
Except where the most liberty-killing places are NOT as populous, to wit: Detroit, where even Mother Nature herself is RECLAIMING part of it.
And NO, capitalism did NOT kill Detroit. Saying that it did is not only denying reality and history, it is simply LYING.
You can't reason with trolls, they're half-wits.
"Troll characters possess the following racial traits... ?4 Intelligence (minimum 3), ?2 Wisdom, ?4 Charisma."
Yep, that's Tony, alright.
Tony|3.18.14 @ 1:08PM|#
"Are people being forced to stay in California and NY? Seems odd that the most liberty killing states are also the richest and most populous"
Yes, Tony, the slimeballs running the governments there use every bit of the attractions in the hopes of not scaring them off, and it works to a degree:
"California nervously watches millionaires leave the state over skyrocketing tax rates"
http://secaa23.newsvine.com/_n.....-tax-rates
"Never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience".
That is all.
"Seems odd that the most liberty killing states are also the richest and most populous."
No they aren't. They just have high inequality (California, for example, has the nations highest poverty rate). Something progressives allegedly have a problem with.
Is everyone else still having problems posting?
Let's see...
Yes. And I'm thinking you were right all along:
http://www.wired.com/autopia/2.....ical-fire/
I have some emails into some 777 pilots to see if there is an emergency power mode that would shut a lot of shit off and still allow the VHF/SATCOM to function. Most aircraft have an Emergency bus, that does just that. Gives you just enough equipment to land with.
I learned this AM that the course change took them directly over the Pulau Langkawi airport. Most FMSs have a function that will allow you to hit "nearest suitable" and it will bring up the closest usable airport. They could have punched that in, turned and died on the way.
I can't explain the last two turns, however.
If the data we have is accurate, then the timeline causes a problem with a mechanical or electrical issue. I doubt they were fighting an aircraft problem for five or ten minutes and not be able to get a message off.
Yeah, but there's at least two problems with this analysis:
1. It does not allow the media to speculate about outlandish theories.
2. It does not allow for massive new spending by domestic security forces.
That article does lay out the simplest explanation.
If we were how could we tell you? Also yes.
Testing but, yes, b/c if this works it the first successful comment out of the last 10 or so.
Yes, and so far the problem seems to be largely with Chrome.
I've been having problems with both Firefox & Safari.
I've been having problems with Opera.
I tried to shit-talk tony and the site ate my comment...
Californian: "WHOO HOOO! SUCK IT, NY!"
Yes, that. Except for the "earthquake" yesterday.
My maternal grandmother's family is from North Dakota and I remember visiting the state when I was young. It was wonderful in the summer. Winters are another story.
Earth people, New York and California, I was born on Jupiter.
+1 Kool Keith
Alt-text which changes... This might be the greatest day of my life.
Boy, sure is fun posting a comment, taking a coffee break and then seeing if maybe it went through!
Been a little rough this afternoon, I noticed. Must be a skwerl holiday or soemthing.
Honestly, rankings are kind of stupid. Every person measures a variety of factors into why they live where they live. For instance, I live in Seattle because of the two major software development areas (Seattle and Silicon Valley), Seattle is in a no-state-income-tax state. It also has vastly more liberal gun laws, and is in the middle of a tremendous growth spurt. It is home to Microsoft and Amazon and many other companies (as someone who tends to specialize in MS technologies, that means I have the big daddy close by should I want to try and work there).
For some, living in a place with less laws and bullshit are a factor (which I get), though I've learned the art of living in a big city where you can avoid most of that by renting and living under the radar. If you try and break this down just on TEAM RED TEAM BLUE lines, you're just playing right into the TEAM binary. Which is stupid. It's more complicated than that.
I don't see anything about TEAMs in either analysis.
Not in the analysis, in the immediate discussion in the first comments about it. Sorry, I should have specified that. The site's current unreliability has made posting more detail...hazardous.
Re: Episiarch,
That would explain your overall gloominess...
😉
Tennessee, and Nashville in particular, has grown ridiculously in the last ten years as more and more businesses are moving to the income tax-free states where it's relatively easy to open a business (see HCA) or more importantly move your existing one (see Dell, Nissan, ABC/Nashville production) to a more profitable area.
What's happening in Tennessee is that the transplants get here, look around, see 3000 sq ft houses in decent areas for less than $500K and scratch their heads wondering why they waited so long.
Yes, we don't have the mountains or beaches that Cali does, and Neither Memphis or Nashville or Knoxville can hold a candle to The Big Apple, but I can visit those places. I don't have to live there.
Re: Tman,
Well, the Smoky Mountains are stunning and, well, there's Dollywood... but seriously, Tennessee is a beautiful state. I visited the cement plant in Knoxville a few years ago and fell in love with the place.
We visited a couple years ago in spring - East side of the state (I've been to Nashville, my brother used to live in Clarksville). STUNNING is right. I like Kentucky even better. Cool states - I could live in either one easily.
There's always Spokane (pronounced "Throat Warbler Mangrove"). I bet they still have shootouts at high noon out there.
I personally believe that people consider regulatory climate, laws and taxes after the fact.
Especially a place like New York or L.A., people might move there for professional and entertainment reasons and only begin to consider the smothering regulatory and tax climate after putting down roots.
Young people starting a life who don't have a pot to piss in rarely think of the tax burden when they decide to live in a place. Why would they?
YAY! Illinois is not worstest.
No. I'm afraid Nikki still holds down that position.
In many important ways, it is. If it weren't for a Job Offer I Could Not Refuse, I would never have moved here.
The two states which I tell headhunters I will NOT consider? Cali and New Nawk - in that order. As an employer, they are the WORST. Forget taxes - the workers comp and other laws are backbreaking.
They've begun to reap what they have sown.
You wanna live/work there, Choney? Be my fucking guest. Or theirs. Me? Never - as long as "ever" is what those states are like now.
Also Breaking: Sun rises in the east.
"perhaps these metrics Tony is completely useless as a reflection of the things human beings actually care about?"
You can keep Texas, Arizona, Alabama, and North Carolina.
We are perfectly fine here in NYC.
We pay high taxes.
We have strict gun laws.
Gays can hold hands walking down the street (except St. Patty's Day)
We hire illegal Mexican are are fine with these peole.
We even have Jews and Muslims.
You can keep your crap.
"You can keep your crap."
Wouldn't care to deprive you of it.
We pay high taxes.
And still have lots of poverty, and get little from it.
We have strict gun laws.
And suffer higher rates of crime.
Gays can hold hands walking down the street (except St. Patty's Day)
While getting illegally and unconstitutionally groped by cops.
We hire illegal Mexican are are fine with these peole.
Huh?
We even have Jews and Muslims.
You know who else spent a lot of time counting Jews and Muslims?
You can keep your crap.
Then quit moving here.
Believe me, no one in NC is missing you.
FWIW, the correlation coefficient of the two lists (freedom score from the mercatus site and tax burden in $) is -0.45. I was expecting at least a positive correlation...
See below, I'm retarded...
FWIW, the correlation coefficient of the two lists (freedom score from the mercatus site and tax burden in $) is -0.45. In absolute terms, that's a pretty decent positive correlation.
I would like to see this juxtaposed with a map showing what each $1 paid in Federal taxes vs. how much each state receive from the feds.
The large western states (like Montana where I live) get a for several reasons:
10's of million acres of fedederal land that due to Greens now provides very little revenue along with armies of land managers. USFS, BLM
A large federal highway system (lots of dollars per capita to maintain)
Farm bill, I think Montana is tops in per capita dollars there.
lot of fed money
I know a guy who left a big law firm in Cbus and became a manager at the Little Missouri Saloon in Medora, N.D. because he tired of the rat race and loved the peace and scenery to be found in N.D.
Medora, as a blackjack dealer in Deadwood once noted to me, is medorable. (The dealer was pretty medorable herself, but that's another story.)
I have seen these surveys before. Yes, I can go live in Wyoming and freeze my rear end off in the winter in the middle of nowhere, except possibly for Cheyenne which is at least not all that far from Denver. No thanks on South Dakota or barren and desert states, or Florida where a sink hole might suck me under.
On that note, I suspect that someone from some stink hole, arm pit country (use you imagination and name one) might just think they were in paradise if they came to the Golden State or The Empire State.
However, if you want real freedom (whatever that may be to you at any given moment) you might consider leaving Planet Earth.
We're not discussing your mother's bedroom
CampingInYourPark,
Since you apparently want to exchange insults I have 2 questions for you: 1. Was your Mother constipated and thought she was pregnant when she dumped you? OR 2. Are you an abortion who lived? Just curious.
With that said I guess all there is for you to do is to stick your finger up your rear end which is where your brain is, and then lick it for content.
Have a nice day Ass Chunk!!
Hey, mandalay road guy! Suck septic tanks!
Dear CampingInYourPark,
Just one more question: Are you one of these undereducated Redneck semi-criminal type slobs who does not really understand what you have read because you are a functional illiterate? That's in reference to my original comment which apparently you were too stupid to understand, and so the only avenue left open to you was to fire off an insult.
However, there is hope for those of your ilk. It's called Cucumber Therapy. This is where you ram a cucumber up your rectum in order to stimulate your brain tissue which is located in that area. Otherwise, you might have a case of Optical Rectumitis which means that your Optic Nerve got connected to your Rectal Nerve and you developed a Shitty outlook on life. Have a great day F--- Wit.
Hey mandalay road asshole! Get lost!
Well after that... pleasant... exchange, all I have to add is "to each his own". I get the let's all pile up on NY and CA thing but man it gets tiresome.
