"Irish Democracy" is Alive and Well and Living in America!: Instapundit
Glenn "Instapundit" Reynolds highlights three recent examples of "Irish Democracy" (massive, passive resistance to governmental dictates and rules) over at USA Today. "America's ruling class has been experiencing more pushback than usual lately. It just might be a harbinger of things to come," he writes. Among the cases are the FCC's spiking of its "Critical Information Needs" study and gunowners in Connecticut ignoring new registration rules (Instapundit links to Reason's own J.D. Tuccille on this score). And then there's the Department of Homeland Security's withdrawal from creating a national license plate registry:
The DHS put out a bid request for a system that would have gone national, letting the federal government track millions of people's comings and goings just as it tracks data about every phone call we make. But the proposal was suddenly withdrawnlast week, with the unconvincing explanation that it was all a mistake. I'm inclined to agree withTechDirt's Tim Cushing, who wrote: "The most plausible explanation is that someone up top at the DHS or ICE suddenly realized that publicly calling for bids on a nationwide surveillance system while nationwide surveillance systems are being hotly debated was … a horrible idea."
Reynolds talked about related stuff in his excellent 2006 book, An Army of Davids.

Irish Democracy in a country full of wannabee Cromwells, we'll see how this turns out.
Yeah, you may be aware of this, but I'd advise you to keep the Cromwell comparisons to a minimum if you find yourself in the presence of actual Irishmen.
I know very well the Irish opinions of Cromwell and I share them. Our wannabee Cromwells are among the supporters of the present administration, as you can read on much of the left wing web.
Ya'know, around here nearly every traffic sign and light has a bullet hole in it. I am wondering why traffic cams would not.
I am wondering why traffic cams would not.
Because they might catch you in the act?
You dont stand in front of the damn thing with a stupid look on your face and take aim. If you do that you deserve to get caught.
yeah, I was just messin'. We had a traffic cam at the main intersection nearest us. I thought about donning a black hoodie, face mask and, undercover of darkness and approaching from the rear, taking a bottle of hairspray to the camera lens. The council decided to remove the damn things before I could execute my act of resistance.
I'm guessing a sniper rifle would come in handy for this.

They do.
hah. Next step in Gov logic: cameras to monitor the cameras.
Done and done. I'm looking for the link now.
That is excellent.

Right, so now we do it in secret.
Exactly my thought.
I read that article at USAToday online and saw the link to Tuccille's piece but didn't realize Reynolds had written it. That's kind of a let down.
Irish Democracy is when you vote with either the five fingers that are holding the pint or the five fingers that are knuckled up.
Who's Irish and blogs from next to the pool?
Patio Furniture.
Erin go blech!
Are you proud of that?
Dr. Evil: Son, wouldn't you like to see what daddy does for a living?
Scott Evil: Blow me.
Dr. Evil: What?
Scott Evil: Show me.
Irish I had not Sean that.
Oh great, you're dublin down on the puns. Why don't you put a cork in it?
^nice!
OT: California city goes after gun store with obscure regulatory (some of which were made up) findings demanding they take down sign with picture of AR-15.
Long video. Summation:
According to video, gun store which has been in operation for some time suddenly given writ from city council demanding removal of sign. Due process rules cost $4000 for appeal, which store paid in addition to lawyers fees.
Appeals process = 3 minutes to respond to city council's demands during meeting which city council has 30 minutes to make their case.
Store is currently in for $10 grand in lawyers and procedural appeal fees.
You will not be receiving a hat tip for this when it is posted in the PM links. FYI
I don't do it for the hat tips, I do it for the love of the game.
