Brickbat: Without a Prayer

Azizul Raheem Awalludin, who works for Tourism Malaysia in Sweden, and his wife Shalwati Murshal have spent more than a month in a Swedish jail awaiting trial for hitting one of their sons on his hands for not saying his prayers. The two have not been allowed contact with any of their children, who have been placed in a foster home, since they were arrested. If convicted, they face at least nine months in prison each. And even if they are found not guilty they will still lose custody of their children and must petition a court to get them back.

I'm appalled but not surprised
Everything else is okay if the government does it. Why not kidnapping?
Sharia law strikes again.
On the other hand...
The one that hasn't been cut off for stealing?
By these standards, my parents would be doing life without parole.

I knew a Swedish guy who was thought their no spanking law proved how much more incredibly civilized Sweden was than countries like the US.
Yes, sending people to jail for disciplining their children is very civilized.
Yes, but they say that about everything. I know a Swedish guy who says how incredibly civilized Sweden is because Sweden has absolute freedom of speech and also because Sweden has strong laws against hate speech.
Yes, plenty of them think their shit don't stink, although I know a few who constantly complain about what a socialist dystopia it is.
A Swedish-American friend of mine recently commented, unprompted, on how conformist Sweden and the Swedes were. In his words, everybody has a job, everybody makes $40,000 a year, and everybody pays 50% in taxes; there aren't even any Swedish stoners.
The article says they haven't been charged or givennbail. Is that correct?
And that Sweden either releases you before trial or doesn't, but has no bail.
They'd be in even more trouble if they had prayed for alt-text.
I want to harp on the Nanny State.... But we are talking about Sweedish Nannies.... Conflicted I haz.
isn't Sweden one of those garden spots the left keeps yapping about?
Yep. And they don't see anything wrong about punishing religious parents for using corporal punishment. (Especially if they use it in aid of religion.) Because keeping people in jail for nine months is much more humane than smacking them on the hands.
Was it for smacking him or for praying?
