Cops Stage Drug Raid—And, Oh Yeah, Accidentally Kill a Woman

You know cops are trying to gloss over a bit of bad news when they write up an accidental fatal shooting by their own in a passive voice and bury it at the end of a press release. That's what the Ross County, Ohio, Sheriff's Office did last week, when announcing a drug raid gone really, really wrong. The press release talks up the discovery of "large amounts of what is presumed to be heroin," cash, and firearms. Oh. And did we mention a woman got shot in the head? And died?
From the press release's very last paragraph (PDF):
During the execution of the search warrant, an adult female at the residence suffered an apparent gunshot wound, and was transported from the scene by medical helicopter. Pursuant to policy, the Ross County Sheriff's Office called BCI to the scene to review the execution of the warrant.
Oh. That sounds unfortunate. The "bad guys" must have gone hog wild, just blasting away, right.
Not so much. Buckeye Country 105.5 tells us:
A Ross County law enforcement official is on paid leave after firing a shot that eventually killed a woman during a drug raid.
Members of the U.S. 23 Task Force raided a known drug house along U.S. 23 in southern Ross County late Wednesday night. As soon as they got inside, they found a woman with a head wound on the couch in the living room.
"It was discovered later that a bullet had accidentally discharged from outside the door of the trailer and went through the outside wall of the trailer and into the living room," said Ross County Sheriff George Lavender.
The bullet struck Krystal Barrows in the head. She was flown to OSU Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, but she died from her wounds.
Sgt. Brett McKnight (pictured) remains on administrative leave while the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation exonerates investigates him for letting off the shot and killing Krystal Barrows. He apparently flinched when his buddies set off flash bang grenades in hopes of startling everybody. They succeeded in spades, it would seem, with special impact on police officers who haven't mastered the whole "keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot" rule.
The raid came as part of a Sheriff's Office anti-drug effort called Stop Trafficking or Pay the Price. Sheriff George Lavender tells the Chillicothe Gazette:
"We started the STOPP initiative, and we've got to continue with that. We have traffickers poisoning our children along with our adults," Lavender said. "So many families have family members touched by drugs, and they're not bad people. These users aren't bad people. They're addicted. This is a sickness like people (don't) realize."
If people aren't willing to get over their "sickness," Sheriff Lavender is willing to make them pay a very high price, indeed.

From his rookie days all the way up to when he eventually makes chief, this rotund warrior of justice will never be so accurate with the bullets that leave his weapon as he was during this execution. Of a warrant.
During the execution of a warrant, an execution was carried out.
I wonder what will be done to round up, prosecute and imprison the other 3+ million (1% or more of the US population) other drug-involved persons in the country?
Same for the impossible task to round-up, prosecute or imprison all of the prostitutes or poker players (many states outlaw private games) or any other person committing other comparable victimless crimes.
Same goes for the illegal immigrants. Please tell me how a law-enforcement action will deal with 12+ million people.
Before we citizens and taxpayers are asked to tolerate or pay for such senseless lunacy, we should be given a clearly articulated plan and endgame. Wait, that's hopeless isn't it. We didn't get that is any of the wars fought since WWII.
Look on the bright side. Krystal won't be touched by those evil, evil drugs anymore. Also, a hero made it home safely and will get a paid vacation.
official is on paid leave after firing a shot that eventually killed a woman
Well, there is this one bright spot in the whole thing - procedures were followed!
I thought this would be a case where a female was seen with what appeared to be a weapon, refused to surrender, and so forth.
But it's a counterpoint to the guy who shot through his door at intrudrrs who turned out to be cops. Only this seems worse because the cop wasnt defending himself, however mistakenly, from a perceived threat.
Except the fellow defending himself would almost instantly be executed in a hail of gunfire, while this chap will spend a week or so on leave before returning to the force, none the worse for wear.
Gotta love that passive voice.
Surely it is meant, "That passive voice gotta be loved".
The passive voice was loved.
STOP RESISTING THE PASSIVE VOICE.
Can you imagine the fun German or Turkish cops must have with their languages' dedicated impersonalpassive voice? You don't even have to write a silly "dummy" pronoun like "it"!
Imagine if our cops could write a report like "Resisted orders. Made furtive movement. Fired gun. Shot person."
That's actually how a lot them do write their reports.
I accidentally stepped into one of the classrooms for the Associate's in Criminal Justice program on my campus.
It smelled of feces and baby formula.
"Fired gun. Shot person."
In this case it would probably have been more like :
"Gun happened to discharge. Person later found to have been in bullet's path."
Japanese drops the pronouns as well but is much less verbose by way of meanings inflected by verb suffixes.
The passive voice must not be resisted.
...a bullet had accidentally discharged...
Since the assault team members were all rigorously trained and proficient with firearms, it was quite surprising to discover that a bullet had somehow accidentally discharged itself.
This is why we need gun control. These mentally ill firearms sometimes just go on killing sprees.
police officers who haven't mastered the whole "keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot" rule.
And a THOUSAND motherfucking Jesus fuck FUCK! this!! This is one of the FIRST things you're taught when your dad gives you a Daisy BB gun at age 8! (at least in our house) 1) The gun is always loaded 2) do not point the gun at anything you do not want to kill 3)don't put your finger on the trigger till you're ready to fire. EVER. PERIOD.
So Officer Dumbfuckwad broke two rules - pointing the gun at someone (even if through a wall - thus also breaking the 4th rule "4) know what's beyond your target") and having his dumbfuck cop finger on the fucking trigger before he knew what he MIGHT be shooting at.
Almanian finds him criminally stupid - he is to be executed at dawn by live fire from inmates at a prison, to be performed in front of other police officers as a lesson to the others.
Anyone ELSE need remedial firearms instruction? No? GOOD
Having your finger on the trigger with round in the chamber in that situation is as far as I am concerned the definition of depraved indifference.
This is one case where manslaughter is an appropriate charge. In a just world the pig would get manslaughter and five to ten years. In our world, he will be completely exonerated and probably be promoted within the year, after having a few weeks of paid vacation.
Don't forget the award he's going to get for valor.
Having your finger on the trigger with round in the chamber
Since you always assume there is a round in the chamber, you can leave that part off.
DON'T PUT YOUR FUCKING FINGER ON THE TRIGGER UNLESS YOU PULL THE TRIGGER PRETTY FUCKING QUICK, would be my advice.
Having your finger on the trigger with round in the chamber in that situation is as far as I am concerned the definition of depraved indifference.
I think the technical term is "assault with a deadly weapon".
Funny thing, just yesterday I submitted a packet to finance to collect 1/2 a month's pay from a SSG because he discharged a blank into a clearing barrel. That Soldier will lose more money and spend more time being punished (he's spending the next two months on additional duty) than this police officer will, and all he is guilty of is popping off a blank into a 50-gallon drum filled with sand.
"flinched" when a flashbang went off - what a pussy. Cool guys don't do that...they don't even LOOK.
" a bullet had accidentally discharged from outside the door of the trailer "
Those crazy bullets = going and discharging themselves *again*!?
Discharges gonna discharge.
Yesterday was a good news afternoon, between the NSA ruling and Radley posting a story about cops and a prosecutor being thrown in jail for railroading a guy into prison. I should've known that there would be a huge nutpunch coming today.
"Other than THAT, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the theatre last night?"
an adult female at the residence suffered an apparent gunshot wound,
Wasn't it an actual gunshot wound? And wasn't that pretty obvious at the time? I can see using "apparent" if you find the victim in circumstances where there might be some doubt. But that's not these circumstances.
a shot that eventually killed a woman during a drug raid.
Eventually, like, days later? Because if its any sooner than that, its not really "eventually", now, is it?
a bullet had accidentally discharged
I believe he means "A shot was recklessly fired."
The bullet did not kill her. She merely died from a sudden brain hemorrhage. That could've been caused by anything!
I loved that too. "An apparent gunshot wound." They'll probably argue that there is no proof that the wound was caused by the officer's gun. She may have already had a wound and lay down on the couch at the same time the officer's bullet accidentally discharged. It's just a coincidence.
Ixnay on the "executionway".
the officer did go home safely at the end of his shift, right?
Unfortunately, yes.
drug cop = terrorist
Whatever it is they do to a suspect who accidentally shoots and kills a cop, that's what they should do to a cop who accidentally shoots and kill a suspect.
During the execution of the search warrant, an adult female at the residence suffered an apparent gunshot wound
It could have been an earwig. We may never know.
Sgt. McKinght: Oh man, I shot Krystal Barrows in the face.
Other Cop: Why the fuck did you do that!
Sgt. McKinght: Well, I didn't mean to do it, it was an accident!
Other Cop: Oh man I've seen some crazy ass shit in my time...
Sgt. McKinght: Chill out, man. I told you it was an accident. You probably set off a flashbang or something.
a shot that eventually killed a woman during a drug raid
So did the bullet wander around for a while, and then make a left turn in Albuquerque before somehow getting in that woman's head?
police officers who haven't mastered the whole "keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot" rule.
What are the odds dumbfuck's gun is a Glock?
Extremely high. Isn't that what most cops are issued nowadays?
~60%.
It's nice that this paid murderer's name and photo have been publicized. It would be a real pity if someone, maybe a friend or relative of his hit, accidentally took him out. A real pity.
He didn't mean to! What else do you need to know!
I'm sure that anyone else who accidentally shot and killed someone in the process of breaking into their home would also receive a paid vacation followed by a discrete promotion!
You're all a bunch of bigots!
Bigorati. Officer safety. Totality of circs. Morgan Fairchild.
hth
His administrative leave should consist of cleaning the toilets, scrubbing the floors, washing the cop cars, etc... you know, something he would be unfamiliar with... work.
