Rand Paul's Spurious Plan to Save Detroit
If Nixon deserved points for going to China, Rand Paul deserves points for going to Detroit — and trying to convert the GOP from a pasty white guys' party to a multi-hued one where everyone, even people with "pony tails, tattoos and earrings," are welcome.
But his actual plan to try and save Detroit by creating Economic Freedom Zones, I note in the Washington Examiner this morning, is simply old garb with new accessories. It's basic premise that it is not government but entrepreneurs who can revive economic basket cases like Detroit is obvious to everyone (except liberals, communists and the Pope). But the problem is that the lovers of America's regulatory state will never unshackle entrepreneurs and let them work their magic as this plan would require. I note:
This approach worked well in England, turning London's depressed docklands into a super-dynamic hub for finance and other businesses in the 1980s. It also transformed India's Bangalore from a sleepy little town (that Winston Churchill once compared to a prison) into a global IT powerhouse in the 1990s.
But it has been a disappointing failure in America. Why? Because neither Republicans nor Democrats have ever managed to create anything resembling a genuine enterprise zone.

What is this, sham day?
Wow.
ShamWow
Are you following me camera guy?
+1 You're gonna love my nuts
It's a travesty. It's a sham. It's a mockery. It's a traveshamockery.
I object, your honor! This trial is a travesty. It's a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham.
No making up words.
Look, all words were made up at some point. Why not now?
You know who else's language runs a bunch of words together to make a new word?
Austrian?
Let Detroit save Detroit. Don't give them a dime of bailout money. When the money runs out, the regulators won't be able to buy anyone off anymore and the entire thing will collapse. You can't force this stuff from the top. The people of Detroit have to decide they want better before things will improve. And the only way to do that is cut off the money and let it hit rock bottom.
OK, so Detroit needs to feel some pain.
Can it at least be sham pain?
I get a kick out of you!
Somewhere, LTC is crying...
"These zones don't ask Houston or Atlanta to bailout Detroit," he said last week. "It frees Detroit to bail itself out."
That would be a correct statement if Paul's proposed bill had included spending cuts to offset the lost tax revenue. It doesn't.
Well ... no. This assumption only works if you assume that expenses run up by the federal government are expenses that must be paid for by citizens. Which seems to make sense, if you don't do as I do ... substitute "mafia" for "government" and see if any given political comment makes sense.
Remember how liberals are fond of saying that we are government and government is us, because government lets us vote for its leaders?
Let's say the mafia is running a protection racket, shaking down businesses for cash. Then one day the mafia decides it will let the businesses choose the mafia's leader. So they give the businesses a multiple-choice ballot of guidos to choose from.
Would that mean those businesses are now part of the mafia because they voted, and would that legitimize the protection racket because they voted?
It's the same logic. Not that liberals use logic.
Don't blame me, I voted for Tattaglia.
The only difference between a mafia and a government is that the government got there first.
The difference is that the government is perceived as being legitimate and 'legal' which allows it to be orders of magnitude more powerful.
Government has more thugs on the payroll.
As libertarians, the best we can do to make the world a better place is change the generally positive perception people have about government.
Agreed, Dalmia's comments make little sense here. Rand Paul seems to be reasonably correct in his statement that lowering taxes on Detroit is not the same as giving Detroit money from the public purse. Which was precisely Clinton's approach.
Furthermore, Dalmia can certainly criticize Paul for not having an offsetting $130 million per year in cuts. But in reality, that's a rounding error on the part of the Federal government. They spend more than that every year on the President's vacations.
In essence, her argument is that:
1) Enterprise Zones have worked in other countries.
2) But Reagan failed to implement Enterprise zones thoroughly
3) Then Clinton turned them into handouts
So thus, they'll never work in America.
That's a pretty weak argument.
It's the best sham plan I've heard.
But the problem is that the lovers of America's regulatory state will never unshackle entrepreneurs and let them work their magic as this plan would require.
maybe I'm missing something. Is the plan a sham on its own merit or is it misnamed as a sham because the idea's primary flaw is that it relies on govt geting out of the way?
Yes.
Apparently because they(D's and R's) never did it talking about doing it is a sham. It can't be done.
By the author's logic Reason magazine is a sham because it writes about free minds and markets which we will never get. She should stick to writing about India's rape culture.
Um, why not make the whole city an economic freedom zone? I know: FYTW.
Um, why not make the whole city county state country an economic freedom zone?
Eh, I'm ok with parts of the country deciding to be stupid on their own.
I'm not okay with political majorities arbitrarily making decisions for political minorities based on arbitrary geographical grouping.
Allowing people to engage in economic activity without asking permission and obeying orders?
Anarchy! Chaos! The end of the world!
You forgot, Somalia!
And no roadz.
All I can say is Sham... WOW
How is this a sham Shikha? If someone proposes something that probably won't work because of political opposition, does the word 'sham' really apply? Is misguided optimism really the same thing as deception?
Also:
It is basic premise? Really?
You need to contribute more because they can't afford editors!
I'm a grammar Nazi too. That being the case, in this context I can see that the ['s] in this case is an implication of ownership, not a contraction.
except liberals, communists and the Pope
Someone please explain to me again, what's the difference between liberals and communists?
Liberals generally don't like to admit they are socialists.
Liberals think that they are pro-market but are anti-"unfettered market", which means they like markets as long as the government controls every aspect of the transaction. So really, the difference between a liberal and a communist is that the communist is honest with themselves about the piece of shit they see in the mirror every morning.
According to liberals, you can't call them communists because they don't advocate total state control and their proposed policies don't result in mass starvation of millions. Therefore, pointing to communism as where there logic is heading is completely illegitimate.
Until they perceive results that don't suit the agenda. The difference between the two philosophies is one is proactive and the other reactive. The goal is the same. A population of economic equals, paying tribute to the ruling class.
Property is an artificial construct. Everyone is more free when they're indentured servants of the state, don't ya know.
"Someone please explain to me again, what's the difference between liberals and communists?"
Mostly the uniforms, as far as I can tell.
Because neither Republicans nor Democrats have ever managed to create anything resembling a genuine enterprise zone.
Plainly, this is Rand Paul's fault.
Certainly. And neither side has ever managed to cut spending either. So I guess any attempt to actually do so is also a "sham" in Damia's eyes.
He plainly has an (R) besides his name. Guilt by association is clearly Reasonable.
It's not a sham plan if it does what it purports to do while facing serious opposition from political hacks.
Shikha Dalmia's articles have never stopped Rand Paul's proposals from being voted on. And since they never have, then they never will. So, clearly this is a Sham of an Article, because we know it won't have any affect.
😉
The whole point wasn't to offer up a plan to help Detroit. The point was to march into the Team Blue hellhole that is Detroit, remind folks whose policies led to/exacerbate the mess, and offer an alternative to counter the argument that fiscal conservatives don't have a plan. Because according to the Progtards and their lapdogs in the media, not having a large, centrally controlled system equals not having any ideas on how to ameliorate problems.
This article is spurious, and a sham.
