Socialist Seattle Councilmember Says Boeing Workers Should Take Over Factory

During a rally for unionized Boeing workers, Kshama Sawant, a recently elected Seattle City Councilmember and self-identified socialist, told her supporters that Boeing workers should consider taking over the factory.

Sawant, who ran on a platform to raise the Seattle minimum wage to $15 per hour, unionize Amazon and Starbucks, increase rent control, and "reduce the unfair tax burden on small businesses, homeowners, and workers," has been making big headlines for her electoral victory earlier this week. She is one of the first Socialist party candidates to win a major city's election in decades. Now, just days after entering office, she is stirring crowds with radical declarations.
The Boeing Machinists Rally was held on Monday in response to contract negotiation disputes between Boeing management and union representatives. The union rejected a contract proposal that would have guaranteed workers jobs for eight years to build the new 777X airliner in exchange for new employees giving up their company pensions.
Boeing representatives responded that the company does not plan to reopen a conversation with the union to renegotiate. Instead, representative Raymond Connor said that the company would consider moving its operations out of state and possibly out of the country. Angered by Boeing's announcement, supporters of the union gathered to hear Sawant speak.
Sawant told the crowd: "[If Boeing leaves], that will be nothing short of economic terrorism because it's going to devastate the state's economy."
Her solution? Simply don't allow them to leave. According to KIRO TV, the Councilmember advocated a worker takeover of the means of production:
The only response we can have if Boeing executives do not agree to keep the plant here is for the machinists to say the machines are here, the workers are here, we will do the job, we don't need the executives. The executives don't do the work, the machinists do. The workers should take over the factories, and shut down Boeing's profit-making machine.
Once workers take over operations, Sawant argued that they should switch from producing "war machines" to public transit vehicles like buses.
Slate's Matthew Yglesias derided Sawant's proposal as unrealistic idealism:
Can Boeing's front-line workers actually retool an airplane factory and turn it to bus production and win contracts to sell buses that raise enough revenue to keep everyone employed? Only time will tell for sure, but in the real world the answer is "no." This is exactly what you need executives for. Retooling plants, establishing relationships with suppliers and customers, understanding the size of the market for buses, and all that other stuff is a non-trivial task.

If statists want to convince us that Atlas Shrugged is unrealistic, they need to stop acting it out.
They could rename it Twentieth Century Motors.
They might also consider dividing up the profits based upon need.
Didn't they state their goal as "dismantling the profit machine?" If there were profits to divide, they will have failed . . .
First thread is Atlas Shrugged related. Not bad.
Can we get Rand put on the required reading list in high schools around the country?
And how 'bout arresting this idiot on the grounds of inciting criminal activity? Her sentence: memorize Galt's 10,000 word speech and being required to recite it once a day for a year.
Sir!
We have a Constitution around here.
And that is cruel and unusual punishment, in the sense the Founders meant, beyond any possible doubt.
You monster.
They are currently screening the French translation.
The same Boeing workers whose colleague landed at the wrong airport?
Nope, the Dreamlifter is operated by a different company. Atlas Cargo, I think.
They realize that Boeing will gladly relocate all the skilled machinists, engineers, etc. if they move the factory, right? I doubt many of the admin staff are going to hop right in and retool a factory.
Socialists have proven that they don't know how businesses work.
She taught economics at Seattle U. How scary is that. Must have been Krugnomics.
I'm thinkin' those with degrees in Business should ask for their money back.
It's like a professor at the medical school going on about the virtues of bleeding patients.
Look Brutus, we all know about the limits of 'science'.

According to http://www.votesawant.org/about :
"Sawant is an economics teacher at Seattle Central Community College and a member of the American Federation of Teachers Local 1789. She was an activist in the Occupy Wall Street movement, and is a fighter for workers, women, LGBTQ people, and immigrants."
Big difference between teaching at a real university and a local CC, where she probably only taught one course once.
Unless she was selected at random from the Seattle telephone directory to teach the class, the SCCC ought to be ashamed of itself.
I'm going to guess she taught basic Econ 101. Supply & Demand curve stuff mixed with a smattering of Keynes.
She's a socialist, I imagine she was teaching Marx. Keynes would be far too bourgeois for her.
fighter for workers, women, LGBTQ people, and immigrants."
Notice to just regular old unemployed folks: this lady doesn't fight for you.
"she is....a fighter for workers, women, LGBTQ people, and immigrants."
I can't wait to see her in UFC 165.
Frome her Wikipedia page:
"She held part-time teaching positions at Seattle Central Community College and Seattle University[3] and was a visiting assistant professor at Washington and Lee University.[4]"
hell i heard some prof at universities get paid like 180-250k a year to teach some basic ass shit you can learn from a book, youtube, or CC....no wonder college is horrible expensive....i wish student loans would go away....if they did the price of college and generational theft of it would go away
You think Seattle's the only city in the nation with skilled machinists and engineers?
The skilled ones who have experience working for Boeing would likely get some kind of relocation offer. The likelihood of that goes down for the less experienced and less skilled workforce.
Charleston, where Boeing has a nice facility, is quite the up-and-coming town. I'd take it.
Philly's also got some Boeing facilities already. Plenty of skilled workers here.
That's what Seattle needs - more incentive for Boeing to get the fuck out of WA and gradually minimize their exposure to the stupidity that seems to be spreading there.
The Executives will sleep easier when assholes like Sawant are just dots in the rear view mirror.
That's what Sawant wants too.
Savage, barbaric scum like her depend on conflict to give them power.
The last thing in the world she wants to see is a company of people working harmoniously to manufacture things; they will have no use for her.
Indeed tarran. Her talk scaring off employers is a feature, not a bug, to someone like her, because she will feed on the resulting hardship and resentment like a succubus.
I don't even blame her - it's what she is. The people who voted her in deserve everything that happens.
While I agree with you the voters deserve blame I would still reserve some for her.
She is on the city council in SEATTLE, the factory that she is referring to, (including many of its workers), is located in Everett. She doesn't even live in the town that she wants to start the "let's make buses instead" revolution in.
It's what she is because it's what she wants to be.
The Executives will sleep easier when assholes like Sawant are just dots in the rear view mirror.
I see what you did there. Straight up racist.
Just a couple years ago, the NLRB was threatening action against Boeing for giving a recent contract mostly to factories not located in WA (read about it here).
With that at this point - Boeing may gladly hand over the factory and let them run it themselves while they continue to use factories who's work force seems to be engaged in working versus arguing what their collective power should grant them (majority rights! it's the new freedom!).
Sawant argued that they should switch from producing "war machines" to public transit vehicles like buses.
It would have worked, too, if it weren't for those meddling kids!
This is an interesting proposal. Maybe Obama could figure out how to deliver his ordnance with "bus drones."
Who wouldn't want a $20 million bus?
Justin Bieber
Yeah sir, you don't need a flight today to get to your destination. What you're looking for is a bus ride.
SHE NEEDS SOUNDTRACK
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc0BqXN9BKw
Yeah, not that there isn't billions to be saved and removed from the bloated defense budget... last time I paid any attention to federal spending - defense spending at least protects everyone - whereas I'm pretty sure public transportation in WA state only helps a select few.
And price controls on ALL gaming consoles so the poor little children of Seattle can trully celebrate Kwanzaa in style.
Oh yes, the dreaded 777 heavy bomber.
The last 777 I was on was a rather nice passenger plane. (I don't care that Boeing does make armaments elsewhere, this plant builds 777s)
Should be simple, just turn the dial
From "war machines" to buses.
I saw it in a Dr. Suess book, so it must be correct.
Capitalist class enemies have stars upon thars.
Where young minds go to die. Didn't care for Suess when I was a kid. My bros science fiction collection with magazines with rocket ships on the covers looked way more interesting than Suess' goofy pictures.
Then you missed out. I've always credited my passion for sci-fi to Seuss' Magnificent Mindfuckery.
Surely someone will loan the Glorious Workers capital for that retooling.
Well, at least maybe the city council will?
I'm glad somebody caught this - I was about to post on it myself.
Doesn't this show that this woman didn't even look into the basics of the situation before rallying the peasants and their pitchforks?
Oh yes, the dreaded 777 heavy bomber.
I was thinking the same thing. For a local politician she seems to have precious little handle on what is happening locally. Everett is a long way from St. Louis, or wherever she thinks she is.
To be fair to her, Boeing does make the AH-64, and is a subcontractor on the F-22.
And those Ospreys have a few guns on 'em.
(And yes, while they're not made in the Seattle plant, her sort of logic holds that the entire company is "tarnished".
How she expects, oh, "peacekeeping" - which such people are always in favor of - to happen with at least light armament and transport will be left as an exercise to the reader.)
AH-64D rocks!
".....the machines are here, the workers are here, we will do the job, we don't need the executives. The executives don't do the work, the machinists do. The workers should take over the factories, and shut down Boeing's profit-making machine."
I dont even know where to start. That is the most stunningly ignorant statement I have heard in a while. This moron didnt fall off of a cabbage truck yesterday, she knows full well that would be a disaster. It is a cynical ploy for political support, playing on the politics of envy and the basest aspects of human nature. She has no concern for the misery that would result, only in her own power.
This is why I say socialists are pure evil.
Yeah Jugears, I am looking at you too motherfucker. 'Spread the wealth around', 'Do your fair share', and 'You didnt build that' comes to mind, you evil fuck.
I wonder if folks like her and those who support/elected her actually "know full well" what their actions would cause. For fun, let them have their way so we can find out. Like O-care is showing, the biggest obstacle an ideology can face is its own demonstrable failure.
For fun, let them have their way so we can find out.
I'd support that on one condition. You wall in the area with a fifty foot electrified fence. Once the logical consequences of their beliefs come to fruition, I don't want the bastards metastasizing.
Nah, just give them one way tickets to North Korea, where we've already found out where this crap leads.
You give her to much credit.
I agree with Vulgar Madman - I think you're attributing careful thought where there is none.
This moron did, in fact, fall off of a cabbage truck (i.e. a community college faculty) yesterday. She really does have no idea what executives do and she really is not aware that "factories" don't just make "stuff" but in fact make specific things that can't be changed easily.
She really does think "workers" can just make "things" and the "things" will find the right places to go to help people without those pesky executives getting in the way. This is because it is unlikely she's ever made a physical thing in her life.
I spent serious time in a humanities graduate department, and the level of non-thought about these sorts of things can be quite stunning.
This moron didnt fall off of a cabbage truck yesterday, she knows full well that would be a disaster.
You'd like to think that.
I've met a lot of people who believe propositions that I think are gobsmackingly stupid - and you know what?
Most of the time they really believe them.
You're right, it's stunningly ignorant.
But I think you're right - it's ignorant. She may well really think you can do that.
At some point though ignorance of things like.. socialism killing millions... or the fact that raising the minimum wage is an unfair tax burden on small business... may well be "believed" out of ignorance, but continued ignorance is either due to inability to learn (a category which the vast majority of the planet is not in) or it's willful ignorance.
I mean maybe she hid while in school - but she's making public statements. I'm sure more than one of those statements has been refuted thoroughly in print, in comments, and likely in letters sent directly to her (same with Pelosi, Reid, et al).
So sure it's ignorance, but given the easy ability to learn all of this with nothing more than time and an internet connection - I don't think one should reduce blame to her for the obvious outcome of her policies - as I think in these cases the ignorance is willful.
I mean seriously - how many more people need to die due to socialism or how many more command and control countries need to face mass starvation or lack or toilet paper before we as a society can say "I don't care if you don't know - you should've and the fact you failed us that badly deserves a punishment"?
Under Washington law, I believe what she's suggesting is what we lawyers call a "crime." Definitely theft, and likely some other related crimes. And I assume she thinks violence is acceptable to take over the property of Boeing, too, which is another set of crimes.
Incidentally, that sounds more like communism than socialism.
Or an actual case of economic terrorism
-Or an actual case of economic terrorism
But they would say it is just economic self defense or some such silliness. Sort of a socialist, economic Stand Your Ground law!
Fortunately, our system still generally supports private property rights, especially between private actors.
It's a whole different ballgame if the government comes in, though that would be illegal, too, unless they could come up with something like Boeing is using slave labor.
It's a whole different ballgame if the government comes in, though that would be illegal, too, unless they could come up with something like Boeing is using slave labor.
Eminent Domain for a compelling government interest!
It's actually not that easy, not for something like this. Though it can be a long haul in court, especially in jurisdictions with crazy judges.
At least Boeing has enough resources fight that battle.
Political connections, more like, but yes. The biggest resource is the ability to go somewhere else.
It also sounds like economic terrorism, but what do I know?
I'm not sure what that is, but I suppose the violence could rise to the level of terrorism, whatever adjective you put in front of it.
Honest Socialism?
same difference, socialism is watered down communism
Rule of Law - how does it work?
I am not sure, but if it ever is practiced in this country we can watch and see.
That bus left the station a while ago, but here comes the rule of FYTW in bus bay A.
Is that bus built in Boeing factory?
What do city council members do again, exactly?
Pretend they're important and steal property through zoning and eminent domain.
Engage in demagoguery it appears.
They mostly fail to patch potholes and collect trash.
-jcr
I wonder if Satwat will build a wall tall enough to block Boeing planes and its company from leaving. If history tells us anything...
"Economic terrorism" I love the left's linguistic terrorism and continual road side bombing of reasonable argument. This Canadian is worried how left some US states have shifted.
It is hard to sympathize with Boeing given its long held position at the government teat, but this lady helps me overcome that.
In my Intellectual Property class we just read a case with a similarly insane fact pattern: when the then NFL's Raiders left Oakland the city tried to use eminent domain to 'take' the Raiders, not the assets but the intellectual property of the 'Raiders.'
"intellectual property of the 'Raiders.'"
That made me laugh
WTF?
Suppose they won. The team moves anyway and renames themselves the Dingleberries.
What does Oakland do with the intellectual property? Sell memorabilia for a team that no longer exists?
They wanted to condemn the franchise, so I guess they planned to field a team. It was lunacy.
Here is the case:
http://law.justia.com/cases/ca.....32/60.html
"It is hard to sympathize with Boeing given its long held position at the government teat."
This is actually key to the socialist perspective. Having known many socialists, I can speculate my way to the following argument:
Government takes tax money from workers (executives don't pay taxes) and give to Boeing to build war machines no one needs.
Boeing then exploits workers by not paying them the full value of their labor so that profit results, feeding said parasitic executives.
Therefore, when the workers rise up and take the factory, it is not theft, but recovery of their unfairly confiscated tax money and the value of their labor unfairly confiscated by the executives, who do not contribute to production.
""the city tried to use eminent domain to 'take' the Raiders, not the assets but the intellectual property of the 'Raiders.'""
I may be mistaken, but isn't this what the city of Cleveland did with the Browns?
On November 6, 1995, Art Modell, who had purchased the Browns in 1961, and signed a 25-year agreement to lease Cleveland Municipal Stadium from the city in 1973, announced he was relocating the franchise to Baltimore, Maryland following the season.[5] ...The reaction to his announcement was immediate and profound. Numerous lawsuits, notably a breach of contract suit alleging he had violated the terms of his lease, were filed in an attempt to halt the relocation. Ultimately, an unprecedented compromise was reached whereby Modell was allowed to relocate the Cleveland Browns, but he relinquished rights to the Browns' intellectual property and history; they were kept in trust for a future Browns expansion team.
As noted in the Wiki entry, the agreement made between the NFL and Cleveland prompted the following =
several NFL franchises used the [similar] threat of relocation to coerce their respective cities to build new stadiums with public funds"
Public-Private Partnerships FTW!
When the Indy Colts, then Baltimore Colts tried to leave MD, they were met at the state borders by highway patrol (here).
I believe Model voluntarily gave up the team name, history, etc.
Given how many times the Browns had let him down, can you really blame him?
I've heard of this condition. She's clearly an idiot Sawant.
I see what you did there
The Workers have clearly confiscated PL's sense of humor and are running it as a People's Collective now.
My screen flickered from that pun.
"The executives don't do the work, the machinists do."
My eyes rolled so far back into my head that I could see the color of my contempt glowing off my brain. It's like a puke toned rainbow.
I will give one point to the commenter - in a government, the executives don't do any real work, they just make up directives that the line people have to implement. I doubt this socialist has ever seen employment from the point of view of a private enterprise.
Of course she works. It probably took her a whole five minutes to come up with that infallible statement.
Sure she's had jobs - but people like her are soooo smart and know firmly that they are that smart - she likely believes she's smarter than every single employer she has ever worked for - never for one second contemplating the need for things like organizational efforts necessary to even build a large company.
Though while here - I want to note on my recent meme - this is another example of a widely held myth that is stupid - and that is management is worthless (though given most companies' inabilities to hire correctly and train well leaders - I can see why the thought is there).
It's like no one understands anymore that there is science in management and effective allocation of resources - see Ford and the assembly line as an example.
See motorola and 6 sigma. GE later with 6 sigma. See any international companies' ability to transverse borders and languages with a workforce strategically located across the globe. See MS a couple decades ago, Apple recently, and Google still. See....
Stain her soul with the taint of for-profit labor? I think not.
Sounds like she was previously a software engineer, so she's probably done some real-world work before.
I had to look at some information on her, I was amazed to see she was born in 1973, in India. You'd think seeing the transformation from Permit Raj to a semi-functional economy and the attendant drop in starvation would at least point away from full-on expropriation.
Guess not.
For some reason socialism can thrive even in the midst of prosperity following economic liberalization, since it is often based on envy, not want.
"...socialism can thrive..."
No, it cant.
As a philosophy, not as an economic system.
It thrives like a virus thrives...until it kills its host.
Sounds like she was previously a software engineer...
How does one transition from software engineer to community college econ teacher to city council member? My guess is that it probably begins with an affirmation like, "Wow. I really suck at software engineering."
As others have pointed out in other threads though - being a female employed in engineering type work reduces the expectations and requirements of said employee.
So it's possible - she mostly failed, but was never really pushed on it.
Though like you - I think it's more probable either she or her employer or both noticed she wasn't going to last long term so she took to teaching - and in this case, she went to teaching economics, something she obviously has zero grasp on, and based upon her resume, no real in-depth training.
Gotta love that community college - and those kids and other idiots learning crap from her... hopefully they learn it's all stupid before they have to pay for those beliefs.
Though if she ever figures out what reality is and therefore confronts all the people she has hurt by teaching them stupidity - her depression will be deeper than those kids.
How hard can it be to make, market and sell airplanes? Or buses, for that matter?
The machines are there. Just get some people who know how to use the machines. What else is there to do? I'm pretty sure I've covered every angle.
It is the fabled Dictatorship of the Proletariat, or whatever.
"The executives don't do the work, the machinists do."
Huh. I wonder who really does the work? The workers or the politicians?
I thought the world had gotten over this.
They'd better soon, because--and you know this better than most--those machinists aren't going to be human for very much longer.
Soon. SOON.
Seriously, it's going to be all robots in what, maybe twenty years? Wouldn't be that long if the government weren't so huge and upfucking of everything.
Her solution? Simply don't allow them to leave
Put up that wall!
Why won't these socialist retards just go away, move to Venezuela where their utopia is already almost a reality now?
We have jerbz! The money they pay us with is worthless, and we don't have toilet paper, but we have jerbz and no one can take them away!
Step 1: get rid of capitalism.
Step 2: ?
Step 3: no more profit!
I wonder who would win that tug of war? Her, or the very wealthy, powerful and well-connected "war machine?"
It is interesting that several people here have joked about 'putting up a wall' to keep Boeing from leaving. I wonder if people would realize that while putting up a wall to restrict the free flow of capital is abhorrent, so is putting up a wall (or 'dang fence') to restrict the free flow of labor is as well?
Occasionally we flirt with that question.
Yes, I know libertarians tend to be consistent there. I was primarily thinking of conservatives who would rightly be aghast at this lady's proposal to restrict the free flow of capital but who would the next minute clamor to 'tighten up' restrictions on the free flow of labor.
Very few conservatives post here.
Well, you do 😉
Sorry, you walked right into that one!
Obvious response.
But you know better.
Now John and Tulpa, on the other hand...maybe fair game.
Did you look up my SoCon post in the AM links yesterday yet?
You certainly seem to have, from what I have seen you post (which admittedly is limited to recent months) let us say, some rather strong sympathies or leanings in that direction.
And no, I have not looked up your post. You are awful proud of it though, eh?
Long post proving you wrong yesterday just failed to post. Lets just say that you were wrong. Its shorter.
Look at the totality of my posts, not just those in response to you.
Many American conservatives have had their economic views formed by the Republican Party.
The Republican Party is dominated by mercantilists. Mercantilists are opposed to the free flow of capital and labor, preferring both to stay within a nation's borders.
Compared to the Democrats, who abandoned liberalism for social-democratic fascism, the Republicans look laissez faire, but when one analyzes their economic policies they turn out frequently to be mercantilist ones.
I think you give them too much credit tarran, most of them just do not like or want Mexicans in their country, for economic and other reasons.
Which is irrelevant as to their stance on economics and capital controls.
The Republicans were founded out of the ashes of the Whigs and retained their mercantilism. The various factions within the party may have very divergent ideas about culture, religion, class, and the role of government in relation to those things, but on economics they tend to arrive at a mercantilist consensus.
Nonsense. No Republican President would ever advocate for the institution of a new steel tariff or pressure Japanese automakers to impose "voluntary quotas." That's just liberal media bias.
Well, maybe a RINO President 😉
Uhhh pretty sure Bush had some steel tariffs.
Could definitely see Chubs doing the same.
Get rid of the welfare state and I have no problem at all with the free flow of people.
The more people who come here to work, the better.
Free flow of labor?
There is no such thing.
Labor is an action. Humans can labor, animals can labor, machines can labor. And all of those things can move about. But 'labor' is an action.
The 'free flow of labor' you use to euphemistically refer to the unrestricted flow of unemployed peoples is disastrous in the world as it exists now, and would be impossible in any real libertopia wherein there are no real 'public' spaces.
The 'free flow' in that case being the ability of anyone to buy in, or to buy passage to an already held job--but there would be no wandering across the border because the border would be privately held land.
The strange ideas of the Libertarian Internationale are better kept with all the rest of the authoritarian garbage they are cover for.
Uh that's what he is talking about. The idea that anyone should be able to accept any job offer anywhere.
The movement of people should not be restricted.
Aren't you pro-minimum wage?
As that's a clear restriction in the flow of labor....
I'm not in favor of walls to restrict the free flow of labor. I'm in favor of walls to restrict importation of PRI/PRD voters. Unless you think the US would be better off if it was governed more like Mexico?
And while we are at it, let's sterilize Leftists, unless you think them having more indoctrinated babies (read: future voters) is a good thing...
Sawant, who ran on a platform to raise the Seattle minimum wage to $15 per hour, unionize Amazon and Starbucks, increase rent control, and "reduce the unfair tax burden on small businesses, homeowners, and workers,"
Fucking cognitive dissonance- how do it work?
She's a rabble rouser. She doesn't have to be coherent.
She gets the vulgar masses rioting and surfs on the energy they release.
It doesnt.
Why doesn't she just help the machinists do a Kickstarter campaign and start their own competing airplane/bus manufacturing company? They could call it Airbus.
Win. Boo. Both.
I....you...just...
*walks away slowly shaking head*
Matthew Yglesias said something that wasn't idiotic? That's the real story here.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. How fucking moronic does socialist clap-trap have to get before even Matty will call bullshit on it.
I guess now we know.
He's still dancing the Snoopy dance, now that someone far more stupid and deluded than he has come out.
"Yay! I look intelligent and sane next to her!"
Once workers take over operations, Sawant argued that they should switch from producing "war machines" to public transit vehicles like buses.
Whut?
No TRAINZ?
So is this one of the "real socialists" our president spoke of?
The electorate was stoned.
Anybody else remember the Eddie Murphy skit about getting shitfaced and voting for Jesse?
"He won? The motherfucker won? No shit!"
I'll know that Rand's prophecy is complete when I see a Chilean industrialist atop the Boeing building, firing a rifle into the ranks of looting union goons rioting at the behest of this psychotic politician.
You can bet this twit won't be leading the charge thru the plant gates. At least "you know who else" had the guts to be in the front rank of the putsch mob.
It's coming to the point that we're going to have to decide between the dollar and the whip. Our time is indeed running out.
I think we're all missing the big picture here.
This is an argument where Matt Yglesias is the sane voice.
I'm not sure what to think anymore.
When Matty Y is calling you bonkers, you really need to seek professional help.
It's just not fair! I mean, the workers do the work but the owners just own! They don't do anything! Not fair! The owners keep the profits while the workers toil! Not fair! How can that be fair! It's not fair!
New plan:
1) Obtain employment as speech-writer/lackey for some socialist politician.
2) Write speeches subtly taking lines from Rand villains.
3) ???
4) Enjoy shitstorm.
Forget Rand villians, just go for Stalin or Mussolini at this point...
Fool. Boeing will flatten that bus factory with a thousand 777 raid.
That would be so bitchin', like watching The Courtland get dynamited.
Schweinfurt FTW!
it's not too late to bid on Lee Harvey Oswald's copy of The Communist Manifesto:
http://historical.ha.com/c/ite.....otNo=38424
Are you still hung up on that false-flag "a Communist killed Kennedy" stuff? We all know it was (looks in *Clue* envelope) the Military Industrial Complex, on the sidewalk, with a curare dart.
One question I have is, why would she run under the Socialist party? Why not just run under the Democrat Party? I have seen Democrats advocate everything listed as her stands absent the 'workers take the factory' talk. Did she do it for attention?
The voters didn't require her to make a routine disavowal of socialism like Democrats in the rest of the country.
Is she officially a Democrat? Wikipedia lists her as a Socialist. My question is, why wouldn't she just run as a Democrat in Seattle? Was she on the outs with that city's Democrat machine?
Because the Democrats typically don't like their socialists to be honest about being socialists.
See also, the political career of Upton Sinclair.
I'd be curious to know how many Democrats would outright repudiate what she's saying. Certainly a decent number would, since many are far less socialistic than their leadership, but I bet a bunch would nod their heads in agreement.
Walmart workers at each store should seize control of their respective stores and operate them as mom and pops, like Gaea intended.
-but I bet a bunch would nod their heads in agreement
Indeed, I would not bet against you there.
Because the Democrats are no more socialist than the Republicans are free market libertarians.
Both parties are about consolidation and containment. Serious socialists hate the Democrats more than they do the Republicans.
One question I have is, why would she run under the Socialist party? Why not just run under the Democrat Party?
For roughly the same reason Sarvis ran as an LP candidate -- because running as a major party candidate for a party you despise is too icky.
Except, in Seattle, you can actually WIN as an openly radical big-S Socialist.
Surely someone will loan the Glorious Workers capital for that retooling.
Perhaps the union would be willing to put their future retirement benefits on the line in the expectation of future returns. You know, like every capitalist entrepreneur in history.
*head begins to spin at an increasingly rapid rate*
It's not even a matter of capital. I've been in the building where they make some of the sections for the Dreamliner, and the tooling is of an almost unimaginable size and complexity. Even after doing engineering for thirty-plus years, I was in awe at it. To think that someone could do this by force is beyond insane.
That building, and everything it holds is TRULY awe-inspiring.
Most socialists are of the statist variety, but there are others, and people like Sawant are who most want to keep you from knowing that. Some on the radical left actually do believe in freedom of movement, for both people and commerce.
Anyway, she can say what she wants, to draw attention to herself, but there isn't much she can actually do about Boeing or anything else.
This shows you that even when Yglesias tries to be level-headed and down-to-earth, he still is a poor writer, incapable of grasping basic logic.
"Only time will tell" is contradicted by his "the real world says 'no'."
"we will do the job"
By "we", of course, she means the proles who will pay her to sit her useless ass behind a desk.

Instead, representative Raymond Connor said that the company would consider moving its operations out of state and possibly out of the country.
OMG, not to TEXAS.
Oh, the HUMANITY!
Don't worry, the NLRB will prohibit Boeing from relocating as it constitutes an unfair labor practice against the union.
Do they have roadz in Texas? I hear they're all anarchists, kidnappers and terrorists.
Isn't Boooosh the president of Texas?
No, it's a Stetson-wearing madman that has women interned and impregnated by force in camps.
This woman is incredibly stupid and naive. It makes me think that either she misrepresented herself during the election for councilmember or the locals are as clueless about economics and the real world as she is.
I posted above, she taught economics. If I was a student, I'd be demanding my money back.
Oh, god. You're kidding, right?
From wiki pedia
She held part-time teaching positions at Seattle Central Community College and Seattle University[3] and was a visiting assistant professor at Washington and Lee University.[4]
Forgot the economics part
A former software engineer from India, Sawant became a socialist activist and part-time economics professor in Seattle after emigrating to the United States. She held part-time teaching positions at Seattle Central Community College and Seattle University[3] and was a visiting assistant professor at Washington and Lee University.[4]
Socialists don't teach economics. They teach a pretense of economics aimed at rationalizing theft, slavery, and power-grabbing.
-jcr
I'm pretty sure that a socialist wouldn't have much of a problem following the course outline and textbook for a macroeconomics class at a community college.
According to Wikipedia, she also earned a PhD in economics from North Carolina State University
It says far more about the intelligence, or lack thereof, of Seattle voters.
Sorry, Epi, Sage and Paul, but we're going to take off and nuke it from orbit.
"The only response we can have if Boeing executives do not agree to keep the plant here is for the machinists to say the machines are here, the workers are here, we will do the job, we don't need the executives. The executives don't do the work, the machinists do. The workers should take over the factories, and shut down Boeing's profit-making machine."
Um, ignoring the fact that taking over the factory and machinery would be theft on a grand scale lets assume that they got away with it somehow.
The machinists there are not engineers and the engineers are not union members (nor are they allowed to be as they are generally considered "management") Nor are they sales or marketing or program managers or project managers (how many of them even know what a GANTT chart is forget how to make one) or any number of other roles "Boeing" provides to them. Further their machines are designed for making aircraft, not busses. While some of it could be used for either purpose most of it can't.
So given all that exactly what work would she expect this new workers collective to provide?
Also one thing they REALLY need to consider. We aren't very far off of those skilled machinists being able to be replaced by a handful of computer programmers and robots.
We aren't very far off of those skilled machinists being able to be replaced by a handful of computer programmers and robots.
And idiocy like this will only hasten the day.
Wage controls like she favors will definitely hasten the the full unemployment of the lower skilled workers.
Yes. The people clamoring for $15/hour pay for fast-food workers would dramatically accelerate the move to automated fast food. It's already coming, but the one impediment is that barely skilled labor is reasonably priced. If that changes, then robots become more economically viable.
Simple - they will pass a law that you can't use robots for food preparation and handling. There is no problem that more government force can't solve!
That's what I meant by government upfucking in some other post around here somewhere.
Yeah, robots aren't to be trusted with our food. Unless maybe for a fat federal licensing fee or some sort of government robot-food-insurance.
No matter what the law says, the minimum wage is always $0.
It's not just automation though. Now you're pulling higher skilled people into those jobs because maybe they want the low stress and flexibility that typically goes along with a minimum wage type job but before it wasn't worth their time. I'm thinking students or retirees looking for some part time work for beer money or whatever. Who are you going to hire?
And if you're going to try and start the workers revolution your first shot across the bow is against the MIC? Really?
Yeah really. Boeing, um, knows some people.
Um, ignoring the fact that taking over the factory and machinery would be theft on a grand scale lets assume that they got away with it somehow.
Why not? Isn't this the same city council that stole a parking lot to operate it as a parking lot themselves?
I thought Boeing had an engineering union.
Because I always found this funny.
You are correct.
On both counts.
Now you understand the Dreamliner.
We aren't very far off of those skilled machinists being able to be replaced by a handful of computer programmers and robots.
I doubt we're within three decades of that being true. Placing chips on a circuit board is a vastly different problem from making the wiring harnesses you need to control an airliner.
-jcr
Robots make a lot of the airframe of the newer airliners. It's coming.
The Pacific Northwest has become one giant derp. I can't imagine why anyone would still do business there. Boeing has slowly been moving out of Seattle for years, and perhaps things like this will speed up their move.
Every time I visit the family in Oregon, watching the news there is like an episode of Portlandia come to life. That show is only a slight exaggeration, at most.
Slate's Matthew Yglesias derided Sawant's proposal as unrealistic idealism
You've got to know when you've got Matthew Yglesias dismissing you for socialist idiocy, you're flirting with peak derp.
Haha, was just going to post this. You know in the back of his head though what he's really saying is, "too soon".
What's really stupid is that this moronic proposal is being poo-poo'd as "unrealistic idealism".
Really? I don't consider total failure, anarchic street fighting, and economic collapse to be in any way "ideal".
*sigh* Like Rand always said, "It's earlier than you think."
Ah yes. Another moron who probably can't even change a lightbulb with a million ideas on how everyone else should do their jobs.
She ran on a platform of socialism. That should tell us everything we need to know about the mindset of her constituents. Can we please split this state in half now? What am I saying. If they won't let Boeing leave, they sure as hell won't let their indentured eastsiders to leave....
Actually, I'm guessing that the divide is more "everyone else vs. King, Pierce and Thurston Counties" and not "east vs. west." You could wall off those three counties as a theme park devoted to soft fascism.
Those are probably the hotbeds, but it's not just three counties.
Look at any voting map and you'll see the divide between eastern and western politics. Or at least perceptions of politics within the two party system.

If you really want to be depressed, read the comments on the story. Has half the population of Seattle been chewing on lead pipes since they were born?
The comments here seem mostly sane, though quite a few have been deleted for violating the terms of posting:

I loved the first one I read. This person parrots leftist lunacy and then goes on to call this chick batshit crazy. hahaha
"Posted by netacoma2003 ...Many feel "lucky" to have a job for some strange reason.....the aerospace business is booming....there's nothing lucky about it. Boeing is selling 30 something 737's a month and making money hands over fist. So are the Boeing executives, but because the executives are such greedy capitalistic corporate monsters they feel they need to squeeze every penny they can out of their employees as well as reach into the pockets of the tax payers of this state for corporate subsidies....that being said...me thinks this new council member is bat crap crazy!"
Yeah, that comment basically says "I agree with everything she says, but man is she crazy!"
When I read stories like this, I can't help but think to myself that the Soviet Union fell too soon. The world never had to look in the cold light of day on the horrors that this sort of line of thinking eventually leads to. They retain the luxury of hearing about it all as a story, a narrative in abstract terms. As a result, they can look at all this as "silly" or "another perspective". They never have had to face just what all this ends up meaning.
Ummm, North Korea still exists.
Once workers take over operations, Sawant argued that they should switch from producing "war machines" to public transit vehicles like buses.
Because a 777X commercial airliner is a "war machine"?
The fuck?
It's ignorant assholes like this that crippled the corporate jet industry. They have no idea what the business does so it must be destroyed.
Incidentally, that sounds more like communism than socialism.
She's one of the "real socialists" Obama was talking about recently to make him look comparatively less radical.
and the engineers are not union members (nor are they allowed to be as they are generally considered "management")
That's not true. My father was an engineer at the Boeing Everett plant, and he suffered involuntary unemployment several times when the union he did not want to belong to went on strike and almost killed the company.
He was a member, WA is not a right-to-work state.
Detroit is now the model. Holy fuck.
If any boeing execs read this know that Kenosha WI is filled with plenty of skilled machinists and a business friendly atmosphere thanks to Scott walker.
"Foolish Americans, your airplanes can be made in Socialist China, where we already make your homemade American pies and flags."
Minimum wage of 15 dollars means American factories will open up in China. Why am I voting Republican, if they can't stop those slant eyed, rat faced bastards from stealing jobs from Asian Americans?
I'm sure Sawant's speech sounded even better in the original Venezuelan Spanish.
They have already prevented Boeing from building in another state. I hope she enjoys her socialist Utopia when it all falls apart and everyone in Seattle is out of work. Amazon and Starbucks should leave as well.
