Justin Amash Threatens Procedural Destruction of Defense Funding Bill Over NSA Surveillance
Funky fresh procedural action threatened by Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, steamed that his amendments to the defense authorization bill to stab at NSA surveillance on Americans is being held up, as reported in National Review:
if the Rules Committee doesn't allow a vote on the amendment, Amash and a coalition of Republicans and Democrats probably have the votes to bring the whole bill down. To do so, they could vote against the "rule," which governs debate for the bill. Those are typically party-line votes, so only a few Republicans would need to join the Democrats to defeat it.
Joining with Amash are conservative Republican representatives Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina and Thomas Massie of Kentucky as well as liberal Democratic representatives Jared Polis of Colorado and John Conyers of Michigan. Conyers is the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.
Amash says the amendment could get widespread support in a roll call vote. "The coalition is much broader than just libertarian-leaning conservatives and liberals. If you talk to members from across the political spectrum you'll find widespread disapproval of what the NSA is doing," he says, adding "our effort is not aimed at overseas spying operations that are legitimate and constitutional." It's the "collection of all Americans' phone records here in the United States" that he opposes.
My March Reason feature interview package on liberty-minded congressfolk, leading off with Amash.

This fokin' Commie Amash better get his mind right and stop supporting Islamofascist terrrrrrizm! Fucking Peter King and Lindsey Warboner and John McShitstain need to fucking straighten him out and get him to fly right! I don't need my goddamned representatives getting my fucking ASS killed to make a fucking POLITICAL point!
Agree. Who else is going to look for those scary turrists under your bed, if not for the almighty benevolent protectors, that is government.
Afterall, 15 Americans were killed in 2012 by terrorists, that more than any other, than in car accidents, than from cancer, than from falling in the bathtub, than from snake bites, than from shark attacks, than from having an alien space ship crash into their house, yes!, that's right Murikans, more people died from terrorism, than from being struck by alien space ships!
We need more government spending to protect us from those scary turrists!
Go, Amash.
Someone is at least trying.
I just can't imagine too many Dems going against dear leader. Although, now that he's a lame duck, and they're all jumping on the Hitlary train (ewwww!), that might get some of them onboard.
I'm surprised that Conyers may get on board with this.
His newfound love of civil liberties is tied to his announced retirement.
Ahh, missed that story.
he's retiring?
Awesome. I got redistricted into his district.
Nicely for him, his wife just finished up her prison term and stay in the halfway house for taking a $6000 bribe while on the Detroit city council
Sooo, how do you like life in an updated version of Dresden, 1945?
I'm not actually in the shit, I'm in the first ring of suburbs outside the shit.
Despite the media, there's plenty of nice areas in Detroit. They're centered around the stadiums, casinos, and downtown, but there are just fine areas. Downtown is fine, if it does empty out at 1700. I tried to convince my wife not to go down to Belle Isle without me (and my CCW), but she did anyway, was fine.
Imagine a party full of people like him.
I'm going to start me weekend with that fantasy.
Put down a towel this time. Other people use that couch, you know.
Well, it's grown from one, to three. So I guess there's still some hope.
They'll crumble like my late mother's very dry sugar cookies.
Enough about your promiscuous mother, FoE.
"sugar cookies" is a euphemism for vagina, isn't it?
'Cause I distinctly remember Mrs. Etiquette being very dry and crumbly down there.
If Amash is successful, every terrorist is gonna be cracking wise about our mothers.
Hey, all it took was a hint. Just looked outside and they're getting ready to jihad all over town!
You're that FoE?
we're all FoE
How 'bout these cookies, sugar?
Obviously, Fist is his own father.

Hey Brian, is your sentence running?
Well go catch it for him, what are you waiting for?!?
Hilarious: Washington Post is running a pool where people try to guess when Eric Holder will resign.
News item:
Franco still dead.
We'll see if President Hillary asks for his resignation.
Hey Guys I just read the best takedown of Dan Brown's Inferno.
Dan Brown has the writing style of a 4th grader. And that's being kind.
Are you mining the h&r archive for OT posts?
someone woke up on the wrong side of the oatmeal bowl

Goddammit, Amash! Stop doing things to make me like you!
Hurry up and sell out, you bastard!
What's worse, is that we're also apparently going to have to like Massie, even though he's like the Hillbilly version of Bill Gates, only Libertarian.
Amash is a greater threat than Massie. Since Boehner sent Amash into exile from the party instead of buying him off, Amash is now free to cause as much mischief for TEAM Red and TEAM Blue as he likes.
Massie is a pretty hardcore Libertarian. He got elected with the intention of doing as much Libertarian mayhem in congress as he can. I have no doubt about that.
RP has the most influence of the 3 Ls in congress, by far, but he's worrying me with his SoCon pandering.
Mitch McConnell has no control over the Senate Republicans. Rand Paul is free to do and say what he wants without any immediate repercussions from TEAM Red. But Rand has his eye 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., so he is making some SoCon noises to appease the Santorum Squad.
Massie will also be taking Paul's senate seat when he runs for President.
Conjecture, of course, but I dont see it not happening.
A scene that I would love to see. Unfortunately, what we are going to see in the 2016 election, is the election of the Hitlary. And you thought Obama and Bush were bad? You ain't seen nothing yet.
I don't know. In general, I'm not too optimistic about the political future, but with the way the progs are going ape-shit at everything, I have to think the average non-progs will get tired of it at some point.
Right?
I mean, the progs are going nuts about Trayvon and SYG, and I'm sure they'll move to CPL at some point. And at the same time, like 179k got CPLs in Florida in the last 18 months or so.
The progs get louder, hopefully that means they're getting weaker?
My prediction:
Hillary will never be president.
"Hillary will never be president."
I hope you're right, but the prog propensity to ignore all faults does not make me confident.
Nor does the GOP propensity for offering up RINOs like Romney.
I addressed his genealogy in the thread where he was putting the brakes on military aid in Egypt and Syria.
He is in fact the medically miraculous spawn of Bill Gates and James Franco. Little known though: He was gestated in a lab womb constructed from Ayn Rand's stem cells and nurtured in a pure bath of John Stuart Mill's urine.
Seriously.
So he's a Yokeltarian?
Can I mention (again and again) that Amash is my rep? I'm shocked that he managed to fly in such a socon district.
Love it. I got redistricted into Conyer's district. Did you know his wife just got out of prison?
Considering that somebody already posted it an hour or so before this, yes, we knew. 😉
That was me, I figured it was worth saying it every time Conyers was mentioned.
You probably want the Detroit Lions to let you down one last time too, don't you?
[ducking]
Nah, after the 0-16 season, they don't owe me anything.

"Can I mention (again and again) that Amash is my rep?"
I have the pleasure of reporting that my rep represents mostly sea-creatures:
(squirrels don't like wiki links; search CA 12th district)
Unfortunately, her intelligence doesn't measure up to most of her constituents.
I've never had any problem posting wiki links here.
Ted, one more try:
Nope.
Not worth it; the preview has most of it as a link, the remainder as copy.
Try wiki for "California's 12th Congressional District"; maybe I'm doing something wrong.
I just got redistricted to this. But, you're right, it's better than yours.
Visceral pain. Ouch. At least my guy is just corrupt, not actively malicious. Right?
Oh, and the wiki entry map for my district is the old gerrymandering. Here is the updated one.
"But, you're right, it's better than yours."
Dammit, I tried three times. One of these days, I'm gonna have to admit to being an old fart.
(but did you just copy/paste? That's what it didn't let me do)
If you just copy/paste the link, the squirrels don't like the apostrophe. You need to enclose the link in 'a' tags (replace [less than] and [greater than] with the respective symbols):
[less than]a href="Enclose link here in quotes"[greater than]Friendly name here[less than]/a[greater than]
This has to be purposeful.
