Sign Up Today? 8 Actual Ways that Government Officials Say They Might Advertise Obamacare

Obamacare's health insurance exchanges are set to start enrolling people in insurance coverage in October. But in advance of the opening, government officials are looking for ways to advertise the law, largely to the uninsured young people who are considered crucial the law's success. Some of the ideas they've mentioned are, well, rather unexpected. Here are eight ways that government officials have actually considered advertising Obamacare:
1. Marketing partnerships with professional basketball. "The Obama administration has reached out to the NBA about a potential marketing partnership to promote the health law," according to Politico. This game sponsored by Obamacare?
2. Obamacare-related plot revisions to network television shows. "California has signed a $900,000 contract with Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide to market its exchange," according to Governing. "Some of the ideas the group has explored are rather nontraditional: How about a reality show chronicling the struggles of people living without health insurance, with the occasional plug for the exchange? What about writing the exchange into plotlines for primetime shows like 'Modern Family' or 'Grey's Anatomy'?" Plot twist idea: Uh-oh! The exchanges don't work!
3. Sunscreen containers that say "get covered." Officials representing Connecticut's health exchange "will hand out sunscreen customized with a 'get covered' slogan," according to The Washington Post.
4. Buzzing beaches with planes pulling Obamacare-friendly ad banners. The Post also says that the same Connecticut officials will "hire an airplane to fly over beaches with a banner that advertises the new agency."
5. Mobile tour events at Kentucky bourbon festivals. A spokesperson for Kentucky's health insurance exchange told The Washington Post that Obamacare outreach would occur at several events attended by "a large number of young people" within the state, including the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, the Bourbon Chase, and the Bourbon and Blues Festival.
6. Branded coffee cups. In Oregon, the Post reports, state officials are planning various kinds of outreach, "such as putting ads in bus shelters or producing branded coffee cups."
7. This twee, twee ad. In Oregon, naturally.
The state will spend $3.2 million on its ad campaign.
8. Porta-potties. Really. "We've talked about everything we could use, even whether we could do some branding on porta-potties," an official with Washington state's exchange told the Post:. "I want to sponsor charging stations, too. Talk about a captive audience. They're standing there, charging their iPhones."
(H/T to Americans for Tax Reform for rounding up several of these.)

I can't imagine any amount of advertising working at getting youngsters to fork over the monthly equivalent of a used (or cheap new) car payment. The subsidies, if you're single and making over 30k, are a joke.
When I was fresh out of college - and thankfully with no student loans - every dollar was precious. Even a $140 loan on my used Nissan truck seemed like a big expense.
The youngsters that I know (I am talking men, especially single ones, under 40) who are making a lot more than 30k, are already freaking out about this.
The one's who voted for Obama and still half heartedly support him, I have been rubbing it in without mercy. The look on their face, that mixture of shame, embarrassment, shell shock, and suppressed outrage, is just priceless.
Forget about that new phone, new tablet, new car, vacation, and pay for my healthcare, snappers, and like it, it's all about doing your fair share, like your master told you. It's fair, right? We need fairness. We're all in this together, young comrades.
I read the "it" as "out" and well, I think I've been reading too much SugarFree.
I think I've been reading too much SugarFree.
To be honest any is probably too much.
"The one's who voted for Obama and still half heartedly support him,..."
BUUUUUSH made him do it, ya know.
I"m 29, married with a kid, and make a lot more than 30K. We haven't experienced any insurance rate hikes yet, but the grumblings is during open enrollment in August we are going to experience significant increases in premiums. I know not the same thing as buying into the public exchanges, but same underlying cause.
It's just another chip away at the standard of living of the middle class.
It's just another chip away at the standard of living of the middle class.
all together now -- this is a feature, not a bug.
This bunch seeks the erosion of the middle class. No statist system can tolerate one.
Actually, I think they want to redefine "middle class" into a new poor -- remember all Obama's campaign mush about the "road to the middle class"? There is no road to the elite, by the way. No, all should be obedient drones that we will now call the "middle class." And there will be the same old same old as our overlords, don't bother to apply.
I interacted with a lot of youngster through my business and my kids during the Obamacare debate and all of them supported it because the thought free healthcare like they have in Europe would be the awesomest thing ever. And none of them could understand why I didn't want free healthcare instead of paying for a crappy hmo.
.
The leftwing punditocracy denies that was the motivation, but it was. And it's going to blow up in the dems face.
The reps and libs need to mercilessly hammer home how the dems flat out lied about what Obamacare would be
You think your HMO is crappy? Just wait till it's free.
You think medical services are expensive? Just wait till they are free.
Libertarians really ought to hammer home how the Dems flat out lied about ObamaCare. The GOP, with their Medicare Part D history, can't do it without being utterly hypocritical. Anyway, a clear exposition of the facts will only bother net taxpayers. Geezers, kids, and deadbeats of all varieties are affected little or not at all. Low-information voters won't bother to figure it out. And, some people just like to be conned into thinking they can get something for nothing. (Ever go to Vegas and observe the slot machine players?)
Democrats lied, you're wallets cried.
I like that!
Most of those ideas are a joke. It's embarrassing that my ideological enemies, the statists, are so ridiculous and incompetent, and yet so successful.
People that rely on violence to accomplish their goals are really crappy at peaceful persuasion.
That's a great point. Most of these ideas would get you laughed out of the room at a business or advertising firm. Even the only halfway decent marketing idea, the bourbon and blues fest one, is retarded because only middle aged people will be there, not the young people who they are trying to target.
Yeah, they could have at least done it at rock or rap concerts.
Yeah, but you know this policy was designed to by middle-aged people who want to go there and call it a work expense.
THIS!!!
After all, Obama is texting Jay-Z "on the reg":
http://news.yahoo.com/jay-z-ob.....05812.html
In need of an ipecac?:
"When asked for an example of what they chat about, Jay-Z said, "I don't know if this is breaching national security, but when he was getting elected the second time, he was like, 'Hey, you know, off-courter, just give me the ball.' I said, 'Word.'"
Jay-Z and only Jay-Z can get away with saying "word" to the president."
Quiet you fool, don't educate the pinheads!
Let them waste their considerable sums of money on ineffectual bullshit!
Making TV shows that are so boring and preachy that CurrentTV viewers can't stand to watch them? Buzzing beaches in Connecticut (apparently they have beaches there. huh) with government messages? Not a penny can be cut!
These are all creepy as shit.
Obama is the very definition of creepy. He gets more creepy all of the time.
Yeah, but at least he doesn't have creepy motherfuckers working for him.
I can't believe that picture is real. Yet it is.
His basement will someday be featured at rotten.com
There is a sex hotline for even that guy == http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....r_embedded

I suspect that ginger's sexual tastes run more towards decades younger and the opposite sex of Vergara.
Killaz, that second link was much needed after Atanarjuat's link imprinted the image of that creeper in my mind.
Damn, what I would do that woman.
Wait Cali, you're saying that the pictures don't meld together in your head and leave you with an image of the Obamacare Creeper in a thong?
Damn you Darius. Damn you to Hell
I don't even know you but the burning in my brain now makes me hate you forever.
Thank you for that link. I am now thoroughly nauseated.
Holy god! Why would you link to that?
John said that the guy in that picture is supposed to be some kind of tough guy in D.C.
Between that guy and Rahm Emanuel, the 5' 7" Munchkin Mayor, our ruling class seems to have the least frightening tough guys in the history of human kind.
The instant I saw your link, I knew what the picture was going to be.
Excuse me now while I go shower and frantically scrub my eyes.
Instead of that, just click on Killaz's second link. Much quicker and much more pleasurable than scrubbing your eyes.

Ahhhh. Much Better.
The Portapottie idea is great - just make sure the message is in the hopper with instructions to "Please flush twice, it's a long way to the White House."
Well, their public policy is shit, they might as well advertise on an outhouse.
"You have to pass it to find out what's in it"
Well played.
Agreed.
This has got to be the stupidest government in the history of civilization.
And, why do you need to advertise something, when you have already forced the sheeple to buy it? What, are you trying to coerce them into liking it also?
This administration is all about coercion. It is truly an appalling spectacle. You take the most successful country in the history of the world and try to turn it into exactly the opposite of what made it so successful? How stupid is that?
I have come to the conclusion that your average liberal is a militant consensus builder. Not only must you go only with their bad idea, you have to drink the kool-aid with them or you're a failed human.
They're the idiot red-headed step children of evangelicals who won't take no for an answer because you need to be saved. But in their case, you can't get away with a simple rhetorical agreement, you need to sign your money and life over to their church of feelings and intentions.
But in their case, you can't get away with a simple rhetorical agreement, you need to sign your money and life over to their church of feelings and intentions.
Of course, a church only expects you to tithe 10%. I would much rather be writing out that check instead of what the state currently demands of me.
Seriously. I don't believe in religion but I don't believe in government, either. If I am going to be robbed, I would prefer being robbed by those who will take less.
I use tithing to try to get my parents angry at how much they pay in taxes.
"You do realize that the church only asks 10% and it's probably spent more efficiently? And the government asks close to 40%? Depending on your definition of idolatry, this could be a bad path to travel on."
And, why do you need to advertise something, when you have already forced the sheeple to buy it?
Oh but they haven't. The penaltax is much lower than buying insurance. So young healthy people are going to do the rational thing and pay the penaltax.
The only way this could work would be to make it crime not to have insurance and start throwing people who didn't in jail. And I have no doubt that is what they would do if they could figure out a way to do it. But they haven't, so this is the best they can do.
I cant think of a better way to create a libertarian generation than sending kids to prison for refusing to deal with evil insurance companies.
Let me be clear. I took this job to get people to like me. Whether my policies actually work is irrelevant. Being popular is what gets you elected to a third term.
So, wait, help me out here:
Every new federal law, and every revision to the federal register of regulations, also has this many resources devoted to promulgation.
Right?
SURELY the government is making sure that changes to the law that could make you a federal criminal if you (for example) sell the wrong item at a garage sale get this kind of treatment too, right? NBA spokespeople? Aircraft towing banners?
Or is it just the laws that Obama desperately wants to make popular?
It's like this. The teams have decided that the sheeples like everything that they do. It's just that the sheeples don't yet know how much they like it, because their masters haven't explained it well enough to them yet.
It's all about messaging. See, we sheeples are just dumb animals and we have to wait for our betters to explain their great wondrous achievements to us in terms that we can understand.
The problem is that the penalty for not having insurance is really low. So the very people that they need to buy into these exchanges, young healthy people who are good risks, are more likely to pay the penalty than buy the insurance. Worse, at this point it is politically impossible to raise the penalty high enough to make it advantageous for young healthy people to enroll in the exchanges. And even if they could, it would give the SCOTUS a chance to revisit the case because the entire Obamacare Roberts opinion rests on the assumption that the mandate is really a tax because the price for not having insurance is so low. Raise it high enough to effectively force people to buy insurance and Roberts might reconsider his opinion, especially after he reads how unpopular both the SCOTUS and Obamacare are in the wake of his original opinion.
The whole system was built on forcing young healthy people to buy insurance that was unfairly priced based on community ratings to pass on the cost of covering the sick and uninsured and those with pre-existing conditions. But they are stuck with a penaltax that is too low to do that. So there only alternative is to put out propaganda and hope the current generation is so stupid they buy it anyway. That is a long shot. But you can understand why they would try. The younger generation was dumb enough to vote Obama after all.
Your faith is strong, yet misplaced.
It is not faith. Roberts is a totally craven. His number one concern in life is being liked. He would change any opinion if he thought doing so would increase his stature in the world.
What they really want is to make it a felony not to have insurance. But Congress won't go for that.
I think the Supreme Court has already ruled that criminal or civil penalties wrt ObamaCare are unconstitutional. Wasn't that why Roberts issued a contorted ruling that a penalty was not a penalty but was really a tax even though the legislation was explicit that it wasn't a tax????
Yes.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. The burden is on you to find out if you're violating any of those laws.
I once had my license suspended due to a paperwork error. It was suspended for several months, and I wasn't notified. Finally I got pulled over for something. The cop was cool and believed that I didn't know it was suspended and let me off with a warning (could have been arrested for DWLSR).
I had to call some bureaucratic agency numerous times to get it all straightened out (and couldn't drive again until I did). At some point I was talking to some woman, who happened to be an absolute cunt, and I asked her how I was supposed to know my license was suspended if they don't bother notifying you. She told me I should call in each morning and ask if it has been suspended. I was too dumbfounded to even answer. Although it would be great if every Florida driver called her office one morning, just to check and see if their driver's licenses were still valid.
If I had a Florida license I would do just that, because I'm an asshole.
To a group of people so completely up their own assholes, the porta potty idea is pure genius.
The number of metaphors available is mind-boggling. It's their gift to the late-nite comedians.
Why would you need to convince people that paying thousands to avoid possible (but unlikely) expenditures in the hundreds makes sense?
It's self-evident.
That whole recognizing "self evident" things has a great track record in this country.
Well it is not like your typical 20 something is good at math. So they have a fighting chance. Just make it cool. Make it seem like buying overpriced, unneeded insurance is a way of doing your civic duty. Instead of war bond campaigns, Obama can have "buy insurance and save my sorry ass" campaigns.
I enthusiastically endorse this idea. And Obama may just be dumb enough to give it a go.
Well, you *can* get those guys to RENT car rims, and buy $200+ sneakers.

I'm watching MSNBC Race-baiter extraordinaire Melissa Harris Parry and it occurred to me that she is doing the same shtick that white racists did in the Jim Crow South in the 40s & 50s. Stirring up racial hatred for personal gain, inciting violence. It's absolutely disgusting.
I can't stand her motherfucking lisp. You're on TV. Get speech therapy already.
I eagerly await the veritable storm of vandalism that will mar any surface adorned with O-care bullshit. Not that I would condone or participate in such foolery. Nope.
Stirring up racial hatred for personal gain
Say it ain't so!
That video ad is cringingly embarrassing. It's like a really bad homage to Woody Guthrie, or something.
I WANT TO MOVE TO OREGON JUST SO I CAN BUY HEALTH INSURANCE FROM LIVE LONG OREGON!
That line about "every stay-at-home Dad" is priceless.
And is she saying "every logger and lawyer-er"?
Log Jammin'?
The Neo-Americana movement in the land of hipsterdom is fucking embarrassing to all of America. Why are they do desperate to connect to depression era America? Their clothes, their hair, their music. I'm not a collectivist, but these people make me ashamed to be white.
Why don't they print the ads on dollar bills? And then outlaw electronic funds transfers.
I once had my license suspended due to a paperwork error. It was suspended for several months, and I wasn't notified. Finally I got pulled over for something.
I had a similar experience. My license was suspended for not paying an out-of-state ticket (Fuck you, Florida speed trap!), but they never bothered to notify me. I only found out when I tried to switch insurance companies, and they told me, "We can't insure you, because YOU DON"T HAVE A DRIVER"S LICENSE."
Everything and everyone is connected now. All states cooperate with each other and the federal government to make sure law and order gets done.
You're welcome.
Was that in MT Brooksie?
http://blogs.the-american-inte.....f-exports/
Houston unseats NYC as the king of exports.
I've been trying to talk my wife into moving to the Houston area for almost a year now. The sol/col calculators just make it too enticing, plus there are a ton of jobs available for a software engineer. 189 on monster right now for the houston area.
She's a lot more family oriented than I am (plus her mom has ms, so she helps her mom out a lot with random activities), so she doesn't want to be that far from her family. I understand that, but damn I'd love to get into the Houston economy.
I want a study that compares the economies of Red cities vs Blue cities. Another that compares the economies of right to work states vs union.
Be interesting.
there is a version of that already in play - Detroit, California, parts of the Northeast; all heavily blue and all sucking in different ways. Population migration has been to the southern, mostly red, states and it's not all because of weather.
Here a Cato study that did a comparative analysis of population in right-to-work and closed shop states. Turns out employers and employees don't like being forced in an agreement by the state.
http://www.cato.org/sites/cato.....30n1-9.pdf
I find it extremely hard to believe that NYC 'exports' anything close to $100bn a year in goods. Financial products, sure, but that is solely because the worlds greatest counterfitter is situated there.
They probably mean the metropolitan area. Almost all the port activity is in NJ.
Rhywun| 7.13.13 @ 6:29PM |#
"They probably mean the metropolitan area. Almost all the port activity is in NJ."
Sort of like the SF bay area; all the activity is in Oaktown.
Harry Bridges (the sleazy commie) said 'none of his men (sic) would ever unload containers in SF', and he was right. All that bizz went to Oaktown.
It's been done.
I see that Salon was critical of the scheme when it was applied to anti-drug propaganda. I wonder if they will be equally critical of the scheme applied to Obamacare. I am guessing not.
Also, I noticed something...although the scheme was the brainchild of the Clinton Administration and Clinton's drug czar, the "topics" list at the top of the article lists "Newt Gingrich" as a key word. No subtle bias there...
Yeah, why wasn't the phrase "Clinton Administration" plastered all over that?
They should print one that says, "Prescription: Coffee".
The Oregon ad hurt my ears. Of course, if the two Oregon natives I know are representative of their population, it'll work.
I haven't been there yet, and I know better than to judge a whole state by a few stereotypes (even when invited), but, seriously, that ad showed me a lifestyle that celebrates individuality about as much as a one-church town.

Portland if awesome. If you like to eat and drink like a champion, go there. The wife and I are planning a trip there in the fall. So many restaurants and bars.
"Portland if awesome. "
No, it really isn't. It's a pale imitation of a dozen other cities that do it better, and it's infested with junkies.
But maybe that's awesome to you.
Lots of good food and booze. I'm quite fond of the place.
It's a pale imitation of a dozen other cities that do it better
I'm always looking for new and interesting places to get my domestic travel on. What would you say are the top 3 does-Portland-better-than-Portland cities?
I plan to go just because there's something of an Athens (GA) colony there, which I'll just have to see to believe. At least I know there won't be any shortage of PBR (which I was drinking as a family tradition long before it became trendy).
Go here. Thank me later.

I will do both.
Have some good food and booze with your RAIN!
Have I mentioned the FUCKING RAIN?
I live in sunny Long Beach, California. When we vacation, my wife and I choose cold and rainy. It's nice to get some variety.
My wife and I generally refer to vacation in colder, northern climes. Our last 2 major vacations were in Montana and Norway. We've also done Canada and Alaska. We're going back to Norway next year.
We're from Florida and live in central Kentucky. We know heat.
Norway again? Is your wife into black metal, too?
No. She hates it.
But we were particularly charmed by the Norwegian people despite their economic cluelessness, and want to bring our kids with us this time. We'll be heading in to the arctic circle this trip, perhaps to Svalbard Island, and I've longed to eat again at the Bergen Fisktorget.
Himmelfarten.
Are the people as naively cute as the appear in Lillyhammer?
Haven't seen it.
And though I'm certain you're referring to a different kind of cute, Norway is a land of very attractive people.
Haven't seen it.
And though I'm certain you're referring to a different kind of cute, Norway is a land of very attractive people.
Isn't the fish there something like $73 a pound?
The whole country is monstrously expensive.
Maybe. But I'm not there to buy fish by the pound, but to pick out fresh caught fish and have them cook it for me right there at the pier. Lobster, king crab, salmon, cod, whale . . .
Just got back from a three week trip to PA for my parent's 50th.
It rained damn near every day. Don't know how I didn't kill myself as a yute. Definitely a Montana appreciation tour.
So come in the summertime. I love the rain as much as the next pasty-skinned Portlander but it's been beautiful and sunny for more than a week straight now.
Portland's a wonderful town to live in provided that you do not own property, a business, or otherwise come to the attention to the authorities, but that's true of a lot of cities and while we certainly have America's formost per-capita hipster infestation we also have an amazing variety of craft beers to assist you in coping with them.
but it's been beautiful and sunny for more than a week straight now.
Give us back our fucking weather and take your rain!! I've been rained on every day for at least 2 weeks now. I'm giong back to the Hill Country if next summer is like this one.
"Have I mentioned the FUCKING RAIN?"
Francisco, why not sell umbrellas for pete's sake?
In the last two weeks, I've trained for it, because we've had rain about every day.

Sign up for Obamacare and we'll put your money through the smack machine and out will flow baubles and substandard benes!
In addition, buried in the Obamacare law is a requirement that beginning October 1 of this year, every employer in the country, even those to small to be covered by the employer insurance mandate, will be required to issue every employee a government-mandated Obamacare notice. The sole purpose of the mandatory notice is to advise employees of their "right" to purchase insurance through Exchanges. Period. It is free advertisement for Exchanges.
True story: I'm self-employed and buy my own insurance. Last year, just before election, I received a small rebate from my insurer with a mandated letter that explained that it was compliments of ObamaCare. A few weeks later, after the election, I received a letter informing me that the premiums were increased by around 20%.
Were they just making policy decisions based whatever was in the news at the time?
Surely you don't think this had anything to do with the election, do you?
Next you will be telling me that the delay of the employer mandate to 2015 was motivated by the 2014 midterm elections, and not by the Obama Administration's deep concern for America's Business Community and the need "to implement the {Affordable Care Act} in a careful, thoughtful manner."
We just had representatives from HealthNet and Kaiser come to our office because we're cutting out a few layers of middlemen to cut costs. The Kaiser guy was really stumping for the benefits of Obamacare to a group of medical billers who were all rolling their eyes. "Yes premiums are going up now but the savings will kick in soon!"
If you run an S corporation, do you have to send a letter to yourself?
Something tells me they didn't think this all the way through.
Yep. And you better make sure you use language that you can understand!
"Yep. And you better make sure you use language that you can understand!"
And hang a poster where you read it every day!

*Please* tell me that Oregon video is a parody.
Seriously, any legislator who funds any of this advertising should be recalled. Can't TPTB just rely on their penultax BS instead of throwing *more* $ down the rathole?

The scary part is that there apparently are bureaucrats in Oregon that seriously believe that this ad will work.
LONG LIVE THE OREGON SPIRIT! HOORAY!
That Oregon video makes me want to kill everyone.
Everyone.
Your comment intrigued me so I went back and watched it.
I will get the axes and machetes.
Look at my comment down below. I'm pretty sure if I posted that joke on twitter, I would be charged with a felony.
TERRARISTIK THRETZZZZ!!!!1!!1
It's sort of funny that a lot of Obamacare supporters go on and on complaining about how evil marketing by corporations dupes people into buying stuff they don't need.
just before election, I received a small rebate from my insurer with a mandated letter that explained that it was compliments of ObamaCare.
Are you attempting to imply this was not merely coincidence, you racist thug?
Was that in MT Brooksie?
Colorado. Many many many years ago.
I say, take the song and make a video celebrating the real "Oregon Spirit" and "Oregon Way." Show the Oregon trail. Show pictures of those early Methodist missionaries providing medical care at the missions. Show other cooperative healthy ventures. And maybe some loggers and lawyers and stay at home dads. Just because the point of the song is that Oregonians take care of each other doesn't mean that they have to take care of each other in ways that are sponsored by the state.
If you forget the video and listen to the song, you might find that it is about as good a state song as you are likely to get. I live in Florida, where the state song is about a second-rate river (the name, they say, is from San Juan-ita, a diminutive of the St. Johns on the other side of the state) and the song was originally about South Carolina. Presumably the song in the video was written by an Oregonian, and produced in Oregon.
Think of "Yankee Doodle," and "Dixie," both songs originally satirical, but now adopted by the original objects of the scorn. "Live Long in Oregon" could have the same trajectory, especially if you throw in a Vulcan salute.
Oh, and if a video is made, perhaps the song can be played by an actual indie rock band.
My state's song -- it is by far the best.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=001aZMLPTMM
I like my state's song, because its deliciously unPC.
Although I wish they would change it to the new OCMS song of the same name.

I knew this sounded familiar - they're still using it. But with different words.

The close relationship between hooking up and drinking leads to confusion and disagreement about the line between a "bad hookup" and assault. In 2009, 2010 and 2011, 10 to 16 forcible sex offenses were reported annually to campus security as taking place on Penn's campus or in the immediate neighborhood.
In January, Penn announced that it was forming a commission, led by a faculty member, to study the impact of alcohol and drug use on campus, with a particular focus on sexual violence.
When drinking is involved, Haley said, "Guys assume that the default answer is always yes."
Nice bait ands switch; they start out talking about driven, self reliant girls "who know what they want" and suddenly veer off into White Slavery territory.
Because, no woman could be happy without a man.
and just a little self-important. A bunch of 19-year old entitled guys who may be smart of the most worthy group these gals will ever be around?
wareagle, I think you could argue that her statement is true simply based on numbers. The amount of guys (or girls) that are around your age, live in the same place, and who you have a good chance of meeting is far higher at college than it is anywhere else in life for the vast majority of people. So while the percentage of "worthy men" isn't necessarily as high, in terms of raw numbers, it probably is for a lot of people.
This, of course, is the very sort of "traditional marriage" we need to protect from the corrupting influence of gays and lesbians!
I'd have a hard time arguing with the proposition that the single most important decision(s) you will make in your life is whether/who to marry.
Agreed. But Ms. Patton is pissed off that young women no longer go to school just to find a man, like she did.
I think it's absolutely fantastic that women are choosing to not be encumbered by expectations of conforming to the norm.
I still find it a little disconcerting that they were still "ashamed" to use their real names, but it's moving in a positive direction.
Of course the "norm" now is not what Ms Patton is pushing. She is pushing an old norm. The current norm involves women putting off marriage to the point that by the time they get around to it, the men who would have married them have either married someone else or look to marry someone younger. Women are at a disadvantage in that few men in their 20s want to marry a woman in her 40s. But lots of women in their 20s are willing to marry men in their 40s. So men can wait and watch their options just get broader. Women see them shrink as they get older.
Presuming women want to marry at all. Perhaps, they don't. And, if not, I'm fine with that.
No. It is speaking of the ones who do, which is the vast majority of them. For the ones who do want to get married, they are probably better off getting married in their 20s. Waiting until their 40s is a very risky proposition.
"At 11 on a weeknight earlier this year, her work finished, a slim, pretty junior at the University of Pennsylvania did what she often does when she has a little free time. She texted her regular hookup ? the guy she is sleeping with but not dating. What was he up to? He texted back: Come over. So she did. They watched a little TV, had sex and went to sleep."
Yep. The perennial BS story about how American colleges are filled with young women who are into free love without commitment.
Pix or it didn't happen.
What a misogynistic and degrading view of women. What happened to women being strong and being able to act for themselves? Now they are so pathetic and weak any man can manipulate them into giving up their body? Really?
If that is the case, modern feminism has given us a generation of pathetic, insecure young women.
Or perhaps we have a generation of young women who want to have free sex but don't want to bear the consequences of doing so.
No, it's the old why buy the cow when the milk is free.
The fucked up thing about dating girls nowadays is that if you do the traditional date thing she'll wait a few weeks/dates before she gives up the goods.
But if I go out to a bar and see her when she's out with her friends, I can meet her Friday and finish the seduction via texting and a meetup Saturday night.
Same girl, mind you. I fucked a girl last night after her date dropped her off. He paid for dinner, dropped her off without so much as a trip to second base, and then she texted me.
I'm not saying all girls are like this. But a sizable chunk are. If you're trying the traditional dating route, you might just be a way for her to kill time and get a free meal before her usual fuckibuddy is ready for her to come over. Not always, not even most of the time, but some of the time you're just a meal ticket.
At least you get to slap them.

Her true Oregon colors!? Good God...
As a resident of Seattle, I can say pretty easily that that kind of thing will work here, at least on the coast with the interior dragged along again.
Stuff white people like + hippies/old socialists + vegans + LGBT activists + techies + every douchebag who kept playing hackeysack out of high school/college + every rent-seeking social worker in the country + every bum and/or Ave rat that San Francisco couldn't entice with free stuff + Stanley Ann Dunham for a few years before she left the greedy orbit of capitalist Amerika.
If Seattle were a woman, she'd be plump and pale, a vegan with Portland glasses, and with the maturity and worldview of a 14 year old.
If they are so retarded that they are willing to fall for this and buy overpriced insurance so old people don't have to, then they get what the deserve. If I get sick, I am going to go down and sign up for an exchange. Apparently these jackasses want me to freeload off of them.

One commentator complained about Oregon spending $3.2 million on this ad campaign. Cover Oregon responded that the full cost of the campaign was being covered by federal funds.
The excruciatingly painful irony of using federal tax dollars taken from the rest of the country to fund a video about the "Oregon spirit" and the "Oregon way" of Oregonians "caring for one another" was apparently lost on them.
Apparently I, as a Kentuckian, want an America without roads if I don't want to send my money to promote Orgeonians caring for one another.

Here's best part. After people started going after him for the death threat he posted:
The kid's an idiot, but he's a 15 year old who is now being charged with a class 4 felony essentially for being dumb. There's no way that was a serious threat. It's a kid trying to prove what a badass he is on the internet.
There can be no exceptions.
That is such bullshit. He is a moron. But no way should he be charged with anything.

In hiring Janet Napolitano to run the sprawling University of California, state officials are counting on the Homeland Security chief's political savvy and fund-raising prowess to restore a system racked by years of budget cuts and turmoil.
Napolitano, a two-term Arizona governor plucked by President Barack Obama in 2009 to be Secretary of Homeland Security, said on Friday she would leave that post to run the university's 10-campus system, pending final approval by the board of regents expected next week.
Chosen from among more than 300 candidates in part because of her political skills, the 55-year-old Democrat will take the helm as the university is struggling to recover from economic crises that have eaten away at the state budget on and off for nearly two decades.
Does this mean she had none of the skills one would associate with a complex national defense apparatus, other than a ferocious aptitude for bureaucratic turf battles?
Yes it does. She has no academic credentials other than being a good student at a better than average law school (UVA). She has never worked in higher ed. She has no experience in actually running a community college much less a behemoth like the UC system.
What she is a Democratic insider. She knows people in Congress and in the Administration. She knows how to go and work the room for the federal bailout that will have to come if the entire system isn't going to go bankrupt.
Is there a state in the nation where the university system isn't a job subsidy for Democratic party politicians who want a lateral career move? I know my state is massively so.
At least this will silence the rumors that UC is run by a lesbian cabal.
In spite of the cesspool that the UC system finds themselves in, there is still hope. I'll be attending UCI in the Fall and am seriously considering joining this club.
http://kristaml.wix.com/yalatuci
"Her job is to restore the glory of the system," said Jack Stripling, who covers college leadership for the Chronicle of Higher Education.
To do that, Napolitano will have to persuade the politicians who control the state budget that a high-end university is an asset worth paying for - while showing faculty, staff and the 234,000 students that she is on their side.
"The thinking is, you bring in someone with political savvy to solve what is essentially a political problem," Stripling said.
In making their choice of a new president, university leaders picked someone with experience managing a large, highly political organization, said UC spokeswoman Dianne Klein. The university budget, including its hospitals and medical centers, is more than $24 billion.
"It's a dynamic position, and she is somebody who has experience managing big complex organizations," Klein said.
Okay.
To do that, Napolitano will have to persuade the politicians who control the state budget that a high-end university is an asset worth paying for
You mean they aren't already paying for it? They don't already spend billions to support it? Wow.
Yeah. The problem with universities is a political one. It can't be that they're a massive leech off the state that has decided that being liberal factories are more important than educating students to provide for themselves.
It is a political problem -- that problem being that each department wants a piece of the pie, while (for the most part) the humanities are just barely keeping pace, the hard sciences are mostly doing well for themselves, and the "social sciences" and arts are SOL.
My point is that the problems universities have is that they are TOO political. Trying to extort funds through the political process in order to keep afloat a failing model is not how to fix their problems. In 3 or 4 generations, if the universities don't evolve out of their current mission of political indoctrination, will be curiosities that only those who are politically connected will attend. They are making themselves irrelevant, and stealing more tax money isn't going to fix that.
Agreed.
One day Americans will see the exorbitant funding of universities in this country with the same scorn that 16th-century protestants saw enormous baroque-style churches.
The problem is that a where you only used to need a high school diploma, now many employers want to you have a college degree (even if it's totally irrelevant). Until that paradigm is broken, college is here to stay.
That is a problem, but not nearly as big as a problem of massive swaths of college grads not being capable of doing those jobs because they haven't been taught, but indoctrinated.
Even that effect will work to the Universities advantage as a Masters becomes the new grammar school, high school, baccalaureate degree.

One of the upsides of gay marriage is that now when high profile gay couples break up, they have to go to court and air all of their dirty laundry in public rather than just quietly splitting and selling the house. It really is a serious upside for the celebrity voyeuristic.
Seriously. This sort of thing never would have happened without gay marriage. Just ask Martina and Liberace.
I first heard M-A-R-T-I-N-A several years after it was released, and always laughed about the line where Nancy Lieberman gave her a horse.
And you have to admire the chutzpah of anybody who will spell out "Czechoslovakia" in a song lyric.
Much less often. Palinomy requires years of living together. Marriage requires one day. And they only went to court because one side chose to. With marriage, you cannot break up without the permission of the government.
Just curious: So, in both DV and divorce cases, the justice overwhelming favors females over males. But with teh gayz, this can't be the case. So is there any statistical disparity in those cases? Does it go against the more butch/masculine one more often?

The bill in Washington includes exceptions for existing businesses and stores with unionized workers, which has led Wal-Mart and other opponents to call it unfair. It's backed by labor unions and other advocates for the poor.
Now, granted, it is the Christian Science Monitor, but how long has it been since any union could be even remotely described as an advocate for the poor? If you're going to reprint press releases, label them as such. And if you understand nothing about economics, write about puppy faith healing miracles.
..."but how long has it been since any union could be even remotely described as an advocate for the poor?"...
The idiots occupying seats in the SF city government are proposing a law allowing anyone who claims to be offering 'family care' to take time off unless the employer comes up with a reason they can't (guess who decides).
It's called a 'family friendly' law by the idiots proposing it, and the newspaper simply prints that claim.
I guess families aren't friendly toward jobs.
Just to be clear: The unions just pushed a law that said non-union shops had to pay better than union benefits? This... seems short-sighted to me. Were I the owner of a unionized store, I'd be ticking off the days on my calendar to tell the union rep, "hey, you're people don't like it, they can go work at Walmart, right?"
While I, as a matter of principle, am against ALL things east coast, I must wholeheartedly agree with this article.

I'm driving out with a friend to NYC in a couple of weeks to help him move, as soon as I cross the Mississippi I'm donning my shirt with this message of love on it.

My friends and I drove home (to PA) from the Jersey Shore with a sign in the back window that read:
Jersey sucks!
(And so does Springsteen)
Needless to say, we got flipped off a few times. And two teenage boys mooned us from the back of their parent's car.
Well New Jersey is often affectionately called the "Armpit of America", not to mention when I drove through there once I got the feeling that the people that laid down their roads and signs did so blindfolded.
Unfortunately for PA while they were so focused on the obvious threat from Jersey the New Yorkers invaded through the Poconos and have captured the land as far as Allentown. I suggest that the territory east of Kutztown be temporarily ceded and new defensive lines drawn in the countryside where the menace from the east is still uncomfortable.
That's TWICE the Delaware has proven an ineffective defense!

That article says you can get good Pizza in DC. BS. You can acceptable Pizza in DC. But average Pizza in New York beats the best pizza in DC.
When I lived at Eastern Market I used to get a slice from Bolis. That was some odd tasting pizza and even weirder wings.
It is amazing how bad pizza can be outside of the Northeast. I live in New Mexico, and have had acceptable pizza once (only Red Rocks Rocking will know this, but "New York Pizza Department". Although, for supposed New York pizza, the crust is super thick). However, John, I must point this out: The best pizza comes from Connecticut. New York claims their thin crust is the best, but Connecticut style, still thin but fired hotter, is cracker-y and flaky. It is pizza at its best.
I live in Pittsburgh and we have a surprising amount of really good pizza (huge Italian population) and was shocked when I moved to AZ how fucking bad the pizza was. I knew then why chains like pizza hut could survive.
I always figured that every city had a plethora of mom and pop pizzarias that were cheap and good.
The two biggest flaws I've found are grease and crust. New York pizza can be a bit greasy, but not "place three napkins on it and watch them absorb" bad. The second one is crust. I like New York Thin Crust. I like Chicago Deep Dish. But the worst pizzas are ones that can't decide shit or get off the pot, and therefore make a very bready, chewy crust that isn't deep dish. Also, they don't use the cornmeal that Chicago style does so they have no zest and are basically just a mini, shitty bread stick at the end of your slice.
Most here are NY style.
Though there is one place, Vinny's, that is a tad thicker. They put giant toppings on and need the extra dough to hold up. Like one inch thick pieces of green pepper and onion and huge pieces of sausage.
I've NEVER had good NY style in the west. I have a theory that it has something to do with the climate (altitude or humidity). Even places claiming "real NY style" pizza just can't make it happen.
The wife actually took a pizza making class in NYC last year. We bought the bricks for the oven and the whole smack. Her attempts in class were nearly perfect, but she can't get the crust right here in MT.
Altitude almost certainly fucks with baking, as it does with all baking.
I always laugh when cooking magazines give the cooking time for pasta as Try 30 minutes with a lid, if you're lucky.
It's the water. You need limestone spring water to make the dough properly. Also works for bourbon.
I live in New Mexico
Try Village Pizza in Corrales. They make their own sausage. The pepperoni, sausage and green chili is the best around.
... Hobbit
Also, could people in DC stop pretending that Ben's Chili Bowl's Hotdogs are good? They are good Chili Dogs. A good hot dog is either dressed with brown or deli mustard (non of this yellow shit), kraut, onions, relish; or it is Chicago style (the one time yellow is acceptable because sports peppers give the spicieness, a pickle spear, celery salt, onions... and if you're into it, maybe tomato, although no cucumber because it's a hot dog not a fucking salad Chicago)
Pizza is the ONE thing the wife and I miss about the northeast. We gorged ourselves on our trip to PA. Probably won't get NY za again for years.
The wings and subs are pretty good too.
We have an "authentic" NY joint near us. Actually run by transplanted Brooklyners (the real type, not stoopid hipsters) and I'm not a fan of the pizza. Too greasy for me.
If you're in the Tampa, FL area, I recommend this place.
Really? No acknowledgement that CT pizza is different than NY pizza? I need Nicole and Epi to back me up on this, because no one seems to recognize that our pizza is better than New York's more foldable, but worst crust.
It's like how our lobster roll, dressed solely with warm butter, is way better than Maine's mayonnaise-laden, cold lobster salad piece of shit.
Connecticut sucks at many things. Pizza and lobster rolls, though, we excel at.

Funny how one set of demonstrators delibeartly designed to offend Catholics is treated as virtuous, but another set is considered evil.
That's pretty funny.
I'm also thinking about the gays who want to join the St. Patrick's Day parades. Why can't the Protestant gays join the July 12 parades? They could carry signs reading "William III was totally gay!" and see if they're accepted.

You'd have to make it
"William Trey

to make it a catchy couplet.
One set is protesting to advance Leftist politics and the other is not. That is really all there is to it. If someone figured out how to advance Leftist politics by burning gays at the stake, gays would just have to burn for the cause.
Fidel Castro did some work in that direction, but he didn't reach the stake stage.
No. But he did put them in forced labor camps.

Obozio blames it all on BUUUSH, so we're right in line.
So, one historical fact I've always wanted to get to the bottom of: Why did Catholic powers such as the French and Catholics integrate Native peoples in America into their society (and sex lives) better than the Protestant powers like England and the Dutch (which didn't mix with the natives as much)?
I have a number of theories. One, the Catholics have always been more accepting of heterogeneousness in religion- ie saints that were previously Pagan gods, so maybe it was easier for them to convert the natives, whereas Protestantism has always been much more about religious purity. Second, the Spanish and the French came over as single men (Conquistadors, fur traders) whereas other than Jamestown, the English came as families (I'm less familiar with the dutch). The third possibility is that it is a by-product of King Philip's War, which almost destroyed the Massachusetts colony and destroyed the concept that the Puritans could convert the Indians (I find this one unsatisfying because the Spanish came back after the Pueblo revolt kicked them out of New Mexico, although I guess compared to Massachusetts New Mexico was small beans).
Any other history nerd thoughts on this disparity?
I think that the parts of the country that the Brits landed just happened to be largely depopulated of natives due to plagues and the British didn't have much use for those remaining other than as low grade trade partners.
The French landed farther north and got involved in a highly lucrative fur trading situation. The Spanish landed in the warm parts of the Americas and had an unbelievable amount of highly fertile land and lots of mines. The Spanish therefore turned the natives into a slave population to work those mines, which resulted in much more interplay between Spanish settlers and the natives.
The British, by comparison, didn't actually get started in the colonization game until later than the Spaniards and the French. The British were a pretty weak nation compared to their continental rivals at the beginning of the colonization period, and didn't really become a hyper power until William of Orange took over. They ended up with the land that didn't have many natural resources and had fewer natives because they essentially got last pick and ended up with the places the French and Spanish didn't bother conquering.
I think the greater involvement of the Spanish and French with the natives had more to do with where in the Americas they happened to land, as opposed to a difference between Catholicism and Protestantism.
Despite what the bible said many Catholics are totally ok with fucking and drinking and fucking, hard-core Prods; not so much.
That's a huge generalization and I should feel bad but who would you rather party with: a random group post-enlightenment Scots or a random group of Tuscans?
As someone who is part Scottish and part Italian ... definitely going with the latter option
Well, I'd rather hang out with a group of post-enlightenment Scots than PRE-enlightenment Scots. Calvinist Scotland was the asshole of Europe until the Union Act unified England and Scotland into Great Britain.
Fun fact around Scotland to tie this discussion back to the topic of colonization: back when they were an independent nation, they tried setting up their own colony in Central America in the Darien jungle -- one of the deadliest jungles in the world. The colony was run by an executive committee in which a new chairman was chosen every two weeks -- yes, like the Monty Python peasant's commune.
Unsurprisingly, most of the colonists died of malaria long before the colony even got to the point of self-sufficiency. The Scottish nobility nearly bankrupted themselves trying to keep the colony alive; so much so that when the English crown offered to take on their debts in return for support for the Act of Union, Scottish support for the Act of Union was much higher than support for same in the English government.
Did you read 'How the Scots Invented the Modern World?' That's where I know this story from.
Yep. Good resource.
You are far too sympathetic to the British for an Irishman.
Maybe he's a happy drunk.
Yeah I think a lot of it is due to the fact that the ratio of British colonists to Native Americans was far higher in their colonies that the equivalent ratio for French, Spanish, and Portuguese colonies.
Not sure. I've read that in Spanish missions in Florida, Indians who converted to Catholicism were considered Spanish, and actually fled to Cuba along with the clergymen when the region was handed over to the British. I don't know of any examples of English settlers allowing Indians to assimilate so completely, but I don't know as much of that history, either.
I didn't know that fondness for a citrus fruit could be so divisive.
Wait, there enough Americans that know about the whole Orange vs. Catholic thing for a protest like that to work?
in a recent speech in Mexico, President Obama stated, "Much of the root cause of violence that's been happening here in Mexico... is the demand for illegal drugs in the United States."
I thought it was the demand for legal American gunz.
For once the idiot got something right. Of course, maybe if those drugs were not illegal, the demand for them wouldn't be creating so many problems.
WASHINGTON ? The U.S. government posted an unexpectedly large budget surplus in June, a further sign of the rapid improvement in public finances that has taken the heat off Congress to find savings and raise the nation's borrowing limit.
Rising tax revenue, public spending cuts and big payments to the Treasury from government-backed mortgage companies helped the government take in $117 billion more last month than it paid out, the U.S. Treasury said on Thursday.
Analysts polled by Reuters had expected a surplus of $39.5 billion.
June's surplus was the largest on record for that month.

We shouldn't be getting trapped in this rhetoric anymore, but we are. We're trapped in it because the patriarchy says jump, and someone's trained us from birth to chime back with "How high?" Denying the existence of stereotypes is a slippery slope away from denying the validity of any number of identities and experiences. Even within feminism or queerness, when the patriarchy has condemned something as undesirable and negative, there is a sudden rhetorical rush to separate the movement from that thing. We don't just do it with butchness; the same thing is very obviously and violently happening with transwomen, with queer people of color, with any number of minorities who should be leading queer communities rather than cast out from them. This, to me, is actually the worst injustice we commit as a community, as being a group bound together by societal oppression means we should be the most sensitive to inclusion and rights associated with identity. The patriarchy shouldn't win in our circle, but it still pokes its ugly head where it doesn't belong, and I'm all for kicking it back out on its flat ass.

I'm typing this in 2013 with my head freshly buzzed and my binder sweating. I haven't shaved my legs or my armpits in three years. I'm wearing jeans I cut into knee-length shorts because shopping for new shorts is expensive and dysphoric. I'm wearing a flannel cut-off because Philadelphia is stupidly hot. I'm a hairy short-haired sonuffabitch in plaid and denim that by that boy's definition, and so many other definitions I've heard, is considered by society to be one of those ugly lesbians. And honestly, I ain't even mad.
There's something about being a walking stereotype that's simultaneously wonderful and awful. Sometimes I pull an outfit on and catch my reflection in the mirror, and I don't know if I should laugh or not because that kind of laugh is going to rip me in half. When I first came out, I had long hair and I still wore dresses and attempted to put on eyeliner, and people who knew I was gay complimented me for not being one of those lesbians. What did they mean? They meant that I wasn't one of those bulldaggers, that my body was still okay to look at, that I hadn't lost my social desirability, that I wasn't a complete joke.
Look who's laughing now, folks. This butch, that's who.
1996 (or whenever PCU was filmed) called and wants it stereotype lesbian back.
This fat redhead from your link is kinda hot.

the same thing is very obviously and violently happening with transwomen, with queer people of color, with any number of minorities who should be leading queer communities rather than cast out from them. This, to me, is actually the worst injustice we commit as a community, as being a group bound together by societal oppression means we should be the most sensitive to inclusion and rights associated with identity.
Yeah, sure. Whatever.
Okay, I'm posting this on the weekend, because it is weapons grade stupid. I am also prefacing it with a post, because due to the character limit, I have to break the TWO, count 'em TWO, paragraphs, of a multi-paragraph post, into 4 posts. In this piece, a gay black feminist man connects:
1) Being a black dude who was really into the Black Church before he came out's friendship with another black dude in the church. He told the guy he loved him and the dude rejected him.
2) Being a fat gay black man and being rejected for being fat.
3)The Supreme Court VRA ruling
4) Prosecution witness Racheal Jeantel
5) Christopher Dorner
It is the most rambling, incoherent piece I have ever read. May god have mercy on my soul for posting it.
The worst piece of writing ever concieved. Seriously, peak stupid has been reached. Ygleis and Marcotte's kid couldn't top this. But the piece is entitled "I want new dreams: On Racheal Jeantel and Citizenship.
On the VRA ruling:
Could things not be more explicit? Empire toys with our flesh, desiring of us vulnerability, exposure and submission to its will. Empire utilizes our flesh for its own purposes, for the strengthening of itself over and against the needs, the desires, of peoples. Empire is the production of competition. It allows some of us to go to good schools and learn and have good jobs and "strong" families. It creates the conditions where many of us have substandard educations (like in Philadelphia where over 3700 teachers, principals, teacher aids, nurses and other staff will not have a job come Fall 2013) and live in perpetual poverty while never challenging the fact that there is no state in this union where one could work 40 hours a week earning minimum wage and supply for their own or a family's needs. And all this in order to proliferate the inequities and the structural coherence of the nation-state enacted through the dispersement of violent and violative force, through the promise and proliferation of terror throughout the world.
Cont...
But because we want to be citizens, because we desire recognition and protection under law, we contend against each other without ever asking more fundamental questions about what it is we desire, who it is we wish to be. This is the game of empire, the ruse of the promises of citizenship. If citizenship protects under law, perhaps now we can begin considering what lawlessness looks like and what the productivity of fugitivity in our times is. Because we are here, at this moment in time, where we are granted the privilege of seeing, with grave acuity and clarity, the vulgar means employed for nation-states to give and withhold "rights" to individuals, seemingly at its whims.
On Jeantel:
The caricaturing and criticizing of Jeantel hurt me deeply and I began to wonder what was beneath the surface of all the jokes and memes and slurs. The negative reactions to Jeantel's body, skin color, speech, education, are fundamentally about citizenship, about belonging and displacement. What if the jokes about Rachel Jeantel rehearse a more general and nonspecific feeling of displacement from the bounds ? or brush up against the limits ? of the concept of citizenship? Not even simply being a witness could protect from cross examinations that sought nothing other than to dehumanize. There was no respect for Jeantel's personhood on that stand, no desire to get to the heart or truth of any matter. No. Don West had no problem ? in the service of his client and, thus, his finances ? to make of Rachel an abstract value, a general equivalence, attempting to liquidate her of all personhood. And what was said about her language, body, skin, sartorial stylings, hair, affect and knowledge make apparent the fact that citizenship is existence not simply under ? but also after ? law, it is existence gained through giving away liberty to empire. We hear this often: we have to sacrifice freedom in our now moment in order to gain freedom in some other, future moment. It thus seems Slavoj ?i?ek is correct to say, "democracy can itself be a form of un-freedom."
Cont...
The cacophonous choral response to Jeantel reminded me, yes, of the loud "no fats/no fems" of my own queer community: the impulse to disparage that which we fear we have the capacity to become.Folks lampooned Jeantel, it seems, because we are afraid of what it means to be put on display, to have the violations of empire publicized. We can't hide from it when it is there for all of us to see. So then we choose. We choose to distance ourselves from it in hopes that that distance will protect us.
Actually, a defense attorney acting in service to his client is the only way you can possibly maintain the rule of law. This person is basically arguing that we should do away with the rule of law if it makes a black person feel bad.
Yeah, that's one of the many reasons I had to post it. He gets pissed at a defense attorney... for doing his fucking job.
And just for fun (although for John's sake I'm tempted to post the first paragraph, all about another black church-going guy rejecting his declaration of love when he first came out, but this is more insane) on Dorner:
Christopher Dorner's demise ? former member of the Los Angeles Police Department ? is but another illustration that we cannot be protected by empire, that colluding with the nation-state is not the grounds for liberation or justice. Dorner discovered that working as an agent for the state does not protect you from its violence. The moment you stop doing its bidding is the moment you become a threat to its persistence. I often wonder about the New York Police Department, the agents enacting his Stop and Frisk program, working under Michael Bloomberg. At what point will they say that it is not enough to have a job, to have income? At what point do those who are acting as agents of the state stop producing its violence for the cause of justice? Sure, Bloomberg believes the program not only works but also should be even more racially discriminatory in its practice. But would the program be effective if those charged to "protect and serve" actually did something closer to their job description?
If he wanted to be protected from the state's violence he probably shouldn't have shot all those people.
When you say something so stupid that you get a libertarian to defend state violence, you have done something very impressive.
"Dorner L.A. Citizens discovered that working as an agent for the state minding your own business, not doing anything remotely suspcious and not bearing any resemblance whatsoever to a wanted fugitive does not protect you from its violence having your pickup truck shot to pieces in an orgiastic frenzy of bullets and porcine testosterone in a scene reminiscent of the end of "The Gauntlet"."
There.
Yeah, sure. Whatever.
P Brooks, I just unleashed weapons grade stupidity on this board. When the NSA arrests me for this clear use of a WMD, remember one thing...
"What the fuck happened to Colorado College hockey? Why did we let DU become so much better than us?!"
All boards have weapons grade stupidity. The most intelligent board there is (The Straight Dope) fights stupidity 24/7 and yet still gets the stupid there - but for not very long.

You missed my Catalyst link didn't you, Au?
It was a rambling anti-gun editorial, which claimed many completely erroneous things. That guy you just linked could probably get an associate professorship.
Oh, please relink it. I would love to see it.

Tough crowd it is.
It's time for America to join the rest of the first world and adopt common-sense gun control.
Perhaps it's time for you to emigrate to one of those more civilized countries, you revolting little pustule.
They cite Slate as a source of authority.
And the President; don't forget him. All the guns used in violent crimes in Mexico come from American gun shows.
I'm too thirsty to continue.
Thiiiirsteeeeee.
Honestly, that piece was so bad that I had to leave a comment. They hold up Slate and Obama as sources of authority without ever once bothering to go to some actual statisical authority. They say that 89% of Americans support background checks, when the Quinipiac poll they are trying to cite said 91%. They hold up Chicago as an example of sensible gun policies while denigrating small towns for loosening gun laws.
All they're doing is stealing money from us to fund propaganda designed to beat us over the head with a staggeringly unpopular, unsustainible and unconstitutional program designed to do nothing more than further their tight, authoritarian grip up over every minutia of our lives.
It's not as though this were some unspeakably monstrous atrocity like, say, a wealthy person donating their private money to a non-Democratic politician's candidate.

And second prize it two of 'em, right?
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the least necessary article of all time.
A 7000 word Salon article entirely about the 'paradox of failure' in video games, and why it is that we enjoy things that sometimes we lose at.
Don't even bother actually reading it. I read three paragraphs and have no idea why on Earth anyone thinks a human being would want to read this nonsense.
I made it farther than you did, but yeah, that is a fucking horrible article. It basically shits on the idea of mastery of a game (or really anything) and learning curves.
As someone who plays games from Paradox, known for its shit tutorials and steep learning curve, it is especially infuriating. Basically, in Paradox games, there are good "starter nations" with which to learn the game. With Victoria 2, its nations in Latin America, especially Argentina and Brazil. In Crusader Kings 2, its nations in Ireland, provided you don't have that stupid Aztec Invasion expansion turned on. In Europa... tough. Some people like big nations like France, but I find that a pain to manage all the provinces, so I suggest Bohemia especially if you get the HRE.
But the thing is, you play those nations so you can eventually take on the challenges of playing as, say, The Palinate (who in vanilla EU- no expansions- I actually learned on, but I got insanely lucky: I inherited the throne of freaking Austria)
England is an easy starter nation to manage in EU3, so long as you sell your continental provinces.
Byzantium is (or was, before expansions) tough as hell to win as in that game. You knew you were good (or lucky) if you could survive and thrive as them.

I guess if you can't win the argument, you start flinging dung.
As it turns out, I resemble James Madison the most..
Or George Washington, depending on what mood I'm in.
Read a book on counterfeiters *many* years ago, but I'm pretty sure the memory is accurate:
There was a counterfeiter dumb enough to counterfeit US$1 bills. He was also hen-pecked by his wife; so much so that she required him to put her mug on the bills.
But she was so ugly, no one could tell it wasn't George!
I got Madison too.
I took it again and got Washington.
I got Madison as well.
I got George Mason.
R. Sherman.
So I went to Venice Beach for lunch today. There was an environmentalist street fair of some sort and my dining companion and I wandered through. There was a table set up to ban fracking. Apparently fracking causes earthquakes. I looked it up and Mother Jones confirms it! Kind of. The guy at the table argued that we should ban it, but if we don't ban it, it should be regulated.
Also Greenpeace wants to ban Arctic drilling because it'll kill all of the delicious animals (they didn't say delicious, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that the only reason they want to save any particular species is because it's a good vehicle for buttery sauces)
Well, the headline says:
"New England's love affair with natural gas cools"
And then the copy says:
"Dan Whitten, spokesman for the Washington-based America's Natural Gas Alliance, said it appears that New England's real problem with natural gas is that it can't get enough."
http://www.sfgate.com/default/.....663419.php
I'd say the headline writer is full of shit; it's propaganda.
So Zimmerman not guilty. Looking forward to the results of the riot betting.
Good. I'm betting no riots. Some civil unrest, but little-to-no damage or theft.
I'm going to be optimistic and say that fears of rioting are overstated. Zimmerman isn't an institutional figure like a cop or politician, so it's hard for a mob to pin their anger and anxieties on him.
That, and a majority of the people buying into the culture war bullshit are ineffectual middle/upper class white people.
What I'm really looking forward to, given the nature of the defendant and the composition of the jury is how the blogoshpere is going to make the verdict about racism. I'm more interested in a betting pool over who is going to publish the most inane, dishonest, mendacious, and disgusting blog post on this. I've got 5 on Slate.
HuffPo.
Huffpo said NOT GUILTY*
*But not innocent.
Assholes.
How can anyone who followed this case still think Stand Your Ground was relevant?
I'm guessing some MSM people still claim it was?
Too good an opportunity to pass up.
Remember the boycott against the American Legislative Exchange Council for supporting SYG?
The right verdict. I've had arguments with various people here over the certitude of what happened that night, and I maintain that no one alive besides Zimmerman knows exactly what happened that night, but there was definitely nowhere near enough evidence to convict him of even manslaughter.
I don't even know what that means, did GZ play football?
They meant lacrosse.
Note that Florida law allows prosecutors to bypass the grand jury even for serious crimes (except capital). If it had to get through a grand jury, would the grand jurors have indicted?
Maybe it's time for the US Supremes to "incorporate" the grand jury clause of the 5th Amendment, one of two or three provisions of the Bill of Rights which still don't apply to the states.
Eduard van Haalen| 7.13.13 @ 10:11PM |#
"Note that Florida law allows prosecutors to bypass the grand jury even for serious crimes (except capital). If it had to get through a grand jury, would the grand jurors have indicted?"
So are you suggesting that a GJ would not have indicted him? That perhaps a prosecutor might have acted politically?
Just asking; I've largely ignored the case.
It's my understanding the the case was weak - actually, this is partly from the coverage here.
I can't say for sure what a GJ would have done, but bear in mind that lots of the prosecution witness backed Z up on key points, the grand jurors would have heard those witnesses.
Let the protests begin! Justice 4 Trayvon, and a new flat-screen TV for me! Woo-hoo!
That's what you get for letting this become part of your identity.
MSNBC: This demonstrates that juries need to be balanced by race.
Because facts change when examined by different races.
Because facts change when examined by different races.
Wise Latinas everywhere approve this message.
MSNBC: This demonstrates that juries need to be balanced by race
They really see everything based on skin color, sort of like racists do.
One of their hosts also said that it's hard for a black man to get a jury of his peers.
Because white people are not the peers of black people.
The Board of Directors of the Skittles Corporation?
How is that even relevant in this case? Zimmerman is the defendant and he's not black (well, I guess that depends on if you still follow the one drop rule, because I think he had a great-grandfather that was black)
Relevant to the case? It's not.
Relevant to the narrative that MSNBC tries to push? That's a horse of a different color.
This isn't credited to a wire service, but it's hard to believe an amateur outfit like the Chron would originate the copy:
"Jurors heard two different portraits of Zimmerman and had to decide whether he was a wannabe cop who took the law into his own hands or a well-meaning neighborhood watch volunteer who shot the unarmed teenager in self-defense because he feared for his life."
Regardless, they had one other alternative the writer seems to ignore: That the prosecution did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he did what they claimed.
Sleazy 'journalism' one way or the other.
