The City Council has signed off on a $4.2 million settlement with two newspaper delivery women who were fired on by officers in Torrance during the manhunt for accused killer Christopher Dorner.
Margie Carranza and her mother, Emma Hernandez, had reached a settlement with the city in April after filing claims for personal injuries, legal costs, medical bills and emotional damage.
The council approved the payout by a 10-0 vote on Wednesday, according to City News Service.
The multi-million dollar sum will be split between Carranza, 47, and her mother, 71.
The women were delivering newspapers around 5 a.m. on Feb. 7 when officers opened fire on their Toyota Tacoma without warning.
Hernandez used her body to shield her daughter and suffered gunshot wounds to her back. Carranza was injured from flying glass.
LAPD Chief Charlie Beck later said the officers thought the truck was being driven by Dorner….
Well, at least they were thinking, huh? Bullets guided by the thoughts of officers always fly for justice. Except this time, I guess. (It is worth remembering that opening fire randomly even on an actual suspect doesn't really qualify as justice.)
This is a good data point for those who question the public policy relevance of random localized acts of police misconduct and criminality: they can, and ought to more often, cost we the people a bundle.

Look. There was a cop killer on the loose, and these paper deliverers were driving erratically. The officers, believing the erratically driven vehicle was the cop killer, feared for their lives and made a split second decision to open fire. Any other officer in the same situation would have acted the same way. The most important thing here is that the officers are safe. What more do you want?
And the trials for the officers involved are scheduled for when?
Two counts of attempted murder, 100 counts of assault with a deadly weapon (one for each bullet), two counts of fraud (pretending you have what it takes to be a cop).
You know, I'm rethinking my opposition to drones, particularly of the autonomous variety. Instead of cops firing bullets without much discrimination in regards to the preferred target, why not launch miniature, autonomous drones? Such drones are more likely to select the correct target and could even be programmed to wound rather than kill. I know this would reduce the sort of randomness we've come to expect from law enforcement, and it might have the unintended consequence of reducing pet shootings, but no solution is perfect.
Not at all, because the victims will actually have financial recourse, unlike in the current situation, where financial recovery is rare. And the lefties will love the concept of blaming "corporations."
I got an idea. How about firing these panicky assholes who obviously lack any sort of judgement whatsoever?
Just fire them. Criminal charges are a pie-in-the-sky, but for shit's sake at least fucking fire them. If the pain and suffering of the victims doesn't sway the average retarded civilian, how about the enormous expense and liability of having these lunatics employed by the city?
Of course it's the union. And the union is doing its job: Keeping incompetent, idiotic, lazy, dangerous, venal, and just plain evil assholes on the street, firing at random people. Destroy the union. And then at least fire the fuckers.
If I cost my job 0.001% that much money, I'd be out on my ass.
Just banning public sector unions would be a great start. I'm not saying public sector employees should lose their right to associate with one another, but this embedded union crap within government is counter to the interests of a free society.
Public unions are so distorted as to be an oxymoron. Public unions negotiate with other public union officials for pay and benefits, and the "employer" who pays for those benefits (taxpayers) have no honest representation whatsoever.
Of course that makes perfect sense. But Dunphy has explained many times that firing a cop is a penalty almost worse than death, because it's a calling and not just a job, man. Taking a cop's job is like clipping off a bird's wings. What kind of sicko would do that?
If they had nothing to hide, why were they driving with their headlights off? (Oh yeah, delivering newspapers at 5 AM, trying to be courteous to neighborhood residents.)
The original story, as it was happening, had them described as Asian women. As soon as I saw the fact that their headlights were off, I knew that couldn't be the case since all Asian women drive with their hi-beams on 24/7.
Jesus. These two incidents alone are grounds for firing the entire LAPD on constitutional grounds. I wish there was a politician who would remind these assholes that they are civilians. This is not a war zone. God damn.
Ought to cost us the taxpayers more often? How about costing the fucking cops? Every suit like this and you lose an armored car or a member of your SWAT unit. That's the only way to stop this shit. Oh, and some criminal charges for these assholes would be nice. Couldn't be that hard to get a jury to convict right?
"Bullets guided by the thoughts of officers always fly for justice."
Nice.
For Great Justice! BLAMBLAMBLAMBLAM!
Sapphire bullets of pure justice!
Not having to pay a dime for their attempted murder of three people will really teach those officers a harsh lesson in judgement and restraint.
(It is worth remembering that opening fire randomly even on an actual suspect doesn't really qualify as justice.)
Damn right. For real justice you need seven canisters of combustible tear gas for one dude in a small, confined space.
Or a drone.
Hey, LA, stop stepping on our turf!

Dorner Manhunt Madness Officially Costs City $4.2 million
... after taxes. ;-(
And the trials for the officers involved are scheduled for when? (Sorry, didn't read the full link).
July 32, 2104.
The fifth of Neveruary is the opening hearing, I believe.

Would be nice, but won't happen.

But whom do you sue when a drone shoots at innocent people?
See, here's the real subtle beauty of my cunning plan: You sue the manufacturer.
Market failure!
Not at all, because the victims will actually have financial recourse, unlike in the current situation, where financial recovery is rare. And the lefties will love the concept of blaming "corporations."
KKKORPORASHUNZ!
Precisely.
I see you've given this careful thought.
Well, it may or may not be true that I own stock in Justice Drones, LLC.
Indirectly, I assume.
So *looks around* got an insurer yet?
I got an idea. How about firing these panicky assholes who obviously lack any sort of judgement whatsoever?
Just fire them. Criminal charges are a pie-in-the-sky, but for shit's sake at least fucking fire them. If the pain and suffering of the victims doesn't sway the average retarded civilian, how about the enormous expense and liability of having these lunatics employed by the city?
First, assume no union.

It's a great scam if you can get into it.
We should start a commenter union and get a law passed that gives us rights, man.
Government employee unions are fine. Just don't let them vote.
I'm trying to avoid some nasty blow to civil liberties. So no unions.
We'll give them more training.
Satisfied?
Of course that makes perfect sense. But Dunphy has explained many times that firing a cop is a penalty almost worse than death, because it's a calling and not just a job, man. Taking a cop's job is like clipping off a bird's wings. What kind of sicko would do that?
I am not the sicko this board wants, but I am the sicko it needs right now.
And to think, they passed up an offer of a new free truck for a mere $4.2 million. Fools.
"LAPD's Chris Dorner Manhunt Madness Officially Costs City $4.2 million"
Unofficially it probably cost them 3 times that. But I'm sure they don't have the faintest idea how much they invested in this bout of stupid.
"Hernandez used her body to shield her daughter and suffered gunshot wounds to her back."
A real hero(ine).

You do realize that this would have been 100% funnier if you'd gone to the trouble of changing your screen name?
Hmm... I will have to try that.
God knows, I need all the comedy help I can get.
Alt-Alt-Text "Pictured: L L Cool J."
He should have never gone back to Cali.
That's a lot of taxpayer scratch. I look nothing like Christopher Dorner. I wish those coppers had shot at me.
That is some sweet action. Aside from the getting-shot-in-the-back part, of course.
All they had to do was dress up as not Chris Dorner and drive a different color and make vehicle than he. What a scam, and they got away with it.
We're all not Chris Dorner. Where my check at?
If they had nothing to hide, why were they driving with their headlights off? (Oh yeah, delivering newspapers at 5 AM, trying to be courteous to neighborhood residents.)

Either way, they sure as hell weren't a large black man.
The other suit didn't get settled. I believe I posted a link two days ago.
That $4.2M is gonna balloon nicely once this guy is done with them.
Jesus. These two incidents alone are grounds for firing the entire LAPD on constitutional grounds. I wish there was a politician who would remind these assholes that they are civilians. This is not a war zone. God damn.
So now that the civil suit is settled, the criminal charges can proceed?
I thought goldwater was the resident comedian. That's some funny shit right there.
