Bless Her Heart: Doomed California Republican Wants to Block Federal Pension Bailouts
"A" for effort!
It's cruel to point out that California Assemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield) has pretty much no chance of getting anywhere with her efforts, but let's at least praise her for trying. Grove has introduced a resolution to try to stop the state from accepting any sort of federal pension bailouts that the Obama Administration may offer down the line.
From her web site:
"I am proposing this preemptive measure because I firmly believe that each state is responsible for their own fiscal decisions. California taxpayers should not be held accountable for the failed fiscal policies of other states, just as others should not be on the hook for ours," said Grove. "The 'balanced' budget Governor Brown unveiled last month conveniently ignored billions of dollars in unfunded pension liability, and the changes made to public pensions in recent years will only save the state a fraction of what it spends on these obligations. We can't just ignore these numbers, and we should not expect a federal bailout. I want to bring more attention to the fact that the California legislature alone needs to seriously and significantly address our billions in state debt."
Her efforts are part of the "No Pension Bailout" proposal by the free-market think tank Illinois Policy Institute that was endorsed by the Republicans of the Joint Economic Committee in Congress.
Her resolution, AJR 10, would need to be passed by both houses of the state legislature and would be sent to Congress if passed. It doesn't require the governor's approval. But that doesn't matter because the Democrats have a supermajority in the state legislature right now and can shut it right down. It's not likely Democratic state legislators – whose campaigns are typically bankrolled by union groups – would have any more courage than Brown to tackle the pension crisis. They have absolutely no incentive.

I'm sure this will hit the Chron on page 23, right under the obits.
Props to her for the consistency and props to Scotty for the alt-text.
That woman is not nearly hideous looking enough to succeed in politics much less California politics.
What a surprisingly honest resolution. She's done for.
The word "Pyrrhic" comes to mind. Perhaps "Futile" is a better descriptor. Maybe "Sisyphean"?
There's a Republican in California?
According to my SoCal cousins, everything is their fault. Apparently for a long long time they were able to block tax hikes, and that's why CA is such a fiscal mess.
Your SoCal cousins are right. I mean, what kind of an irresponsible monster would think this:
They once blamed Ronald Reagan's term as governor for the electrical issues in 2000. When I pointed out the power worked fine for over two decades, before Gray Davis instituted electrical price controls, they insisted I was listening to the wrong news sources. Apparently the LA Times knew that the real problem was Texas energy companies shutting down the flow. Thus, as always, the root cause of the problem was George W. Bush.
The blackouts were classic. They refuse to build any power plants and introduce price controls, but somehow it is Texas' fault the lights went out.
How did they ever fix that? They haven't seemed to have any rolling blackouts for a while. Did the lights going out actually cause them to get smart? Or have they just been lucky and not had another hot summer?
California energy shortages in 2000 were artificial.
Tapes Show Enron Caused Rolling Blackouts in California
Yeah that's the kind of stupid shit they believe.
Never try to reason with a liberal. They are incapable of rational thought.
Seeing as how Texas is on its own grid that is unlikely.
I mean, it's leftist bullshit to obscure the fact that the real cause was the price controls, but I think that my idiot cousins thought that Enron and other companies refused to sell them oil or something? I don't know...it's like listening to a 9/11 Truther.
What they're referring to is Enron's crony capitalist relationship with the CA government that allowed for all kinds of price-rigging gimmicks. The brown-outs were part of that. Note: their explanation does not in any way exonerate the CA government, which set up the dysfunctional system as a way to shovel money to Enron.
To a lefty, any argument is won by one of three appeals:
1) The poor
2) The children
3) Bush
There is no effective counter argumet.
The Democrats love the poor, that's why they make so many of them.
RACIST!
The CA Republican party is a shambling corpse. It's dead, it just doesn't know it. The dems have had a majority for pretty much 40 years now, and it doesn't look to change any time soon.
Even rats know when to leave a sinking ship.
The dems have had a majority for pretty much 40 years now,
How is that working out for you?
Well, moonbeam dug around the couch cushions and found enough change to pay the minimum on the credit card this year, so he's proclaiming the good times are back!
And we still have checks in the checkbook. laissez les bons temps rouler baby!!
It's ok. I pay taxes out the ass but my cynicism and misanthropy are way up!
I look forward to CA's demise with great anticipation.
According to her Wiki, she is an Army veteran, runs a business, is married, and didn't even go to college. The horror that someone like that is allowed in a position of authority.
She's a Republican in The People's Republic of California. How much authority could she possibly have?
A lot. Don't you know that the Republicans are completely responsible for all of California's problems?
It's cruel to point out that California Assemblywoman Shannon Grove (R-Bakersfield)
How many of you who sit and judge me, ever walked the streets of Bakersfield?

*cue the violins*
California taxpayers should not be held accountable for the failed fiscal policies of other states, just as others should not be on the hook for ours," said Grove.
How quaint.
California is Maryland's future.
California is Baltimore's future. The rest of Maryland has the big federal tit to cover up all of the problems.
The rest of Maryland has the big federal tit to cover up all of the problems.
Right now the FBI is considering relocating to Prince George's County. Fairfax County, VA is competing for the bid. It seams that despite the fact that 25.7% of the Federal work force lives in PG county, MD, only leases about 3.9% of Federal offices in the region.
It seams that despite the fact that 25.7% of the Federal work force lives in PG county, MD, the GSA only leases about 3.9% of Federal offices in the region.
That is because PG County Maryland is a shithole and no one would ever want to work there.
True. But a lot of Federal workers do live there. I'm merely pointing out the possibility Federal spending is not going to cover up MD's problems forever. Especially when you take into account the fact that rising state taxes are driving more and more government contractors across the border into VA.
Except then more and more federal employees will move into VA to escape high taxes. They will then continue to vote Democrat in their new home, and the cycle begins anew.
Detroit is California's future.
I can see the tourist slogans for, oh, Sacto:
"Better weather than Detroit!"
At least it's true....
Looks like she's got nice boobs based on that pic.
I don't wonder why there are no female libertardians, nor why the Californaia Republicans are extinct.
