Miss America Contestant Says Marijuana Should Only Be Legal For "Recreational Use and Health Care"
"I personally know people who have had to go to medical marijuana for their last resort, for their health care and I completely agree with that," said Miss Iowa Mariah Cary when asked on Saturday if she thought marijuana should be legalized.
"However, I don't think it should be used for anything but recreational use and health care."
Which I guess means she wouldn't approve of substituting it for salad in school lunches.

The hemp industry just can't catch a break.
It could be a hat, or brooch, or a bird, or a ...
Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop reading H&R.
I don't get why people continue to expect beauty queens to say coherent things when asked hard questions.
I don't expect coherent thoughts out of any 19-year-old. I certainly wasn't sentient at that age.
Really, there's a reason why there's no TV specials interviewing teenage boys.
Particularly when they don't expect it from the president.
Didn't she give a speech right before Clinton last night, or am I mixing up celeb back-patting shows?
Miss America needs a playoff!
"Mariah Cary"? Sure, whatever.
Oddly, Miss America contestant Q&As; sound quite a bit like administration policy pronouncements these days.
Except she didn't say anything I disagree with - so the opposite of everything Obama Administration.
More like administration policy pronouncements sound like beauty pageant answers. Which is hilarious considering the left made fun of Sarah Palin for being a beauty queen when she was younger.
Please let Janet Napolitano skip the swimsuit competition.
Oh great, now I have to clean my partially digested breakfast off the keyboard.
Bless her heart.
I think she meant that she doesn't think marijuana should serve as an excuse for the men in blue to extract wealth from the imbibing public. Besides medicinal and recreational, what other use does it have?
I suppose you could slip it to an unsuspecting person and that would be neither medicinal or strictly rcreational. And I got no problem with that being banned.
And if you are talking about the plant generally, there are also food and raw material uses for it. But I'm pretty sure she wasn't thinking of any of those things.
Why else would you do that, then?
It would be entertaining, and if that's not recreational, what is it?
The government could use it for torture. Force suspects to ingest it and then withhold cheetos.
Don't give them any ideas.
Fuel, food, fiber...Hemp for Victory!
Great. Miss New York won. Now, we'll have to hear them brag about it for the next 365 days. I can't believe Miss Alabama choked like that!
"Now if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times: POISE COUNTS!"
A buddy of mine and I once got completely obliterated on 151 while watching Miss America. It was a totally awesome time. That's all I have to say about this.
Also, Miss Iowa is a cutie pie.
I need to try that.
The only remotely cool - and I use that loosely - thing I've ever done involving 151 is a Flaming Dr. Pepper. It took two breaths of fire to get the straws to melt, but when they did, they were surprisingly symmetrical.
You'll take my hemp socks when you pry them from my cold, smelly feet.
So, she's better than nearly all of the presidential candidates in the last three elections.
She has a more intelligent less harmful position about pot than the President. She has got my vote.
And this, Timmy, is how stereotypes are born.
The two things marijuana should be used for: health care, recreational use and getting pets high and filming them...the THREE things marijuana should be used for...
Nobody expects the Cannabis Inquisition!
Why is a Libertarian magazine making fun of someone who misspoke while trying to support an issue near and dear to its heart? Is this a bit counter productive?
Drink?
This must be why there are no female libertarians.
I just think there is no shortage of dipshits at places like Gawker and Jezebel to make fun of this woman. Why should Reason pile on? She was making the right point.
Are you maybe assuming that there is a shortage of dipshits at reason?
Touche
Because had she spoken as intended, she would have spoken out AGAINST our position AND she sounded stupid which reinforces the stereotype.
And besides, if you can't make fun of a Miss America contestant's inability to express a coherent thought, what's left to live for?
I have a soft spot for beauty pageant contestants. They are just hard working girls looking for a scholarship or a modeling career.
Exactly. They just need three more credits to finish their criminal justice degree, you know.
The "I personally" preface to policy discussions is indicative of someone who is incapable of thinking about issues objectively.
"I personally know someone who stole a sandwich because they were hungry and I completely agree with that"
"I personally know someone who killed someone because they were a meanie pants and I completely agree with that"
The last comment is further proof of her lack of reasoning. She's basically thinking "hmm, I can't think of anyone I personally know who doesn't smoke pot for recreational or health reasons..therefore it shouldn't be legal for any other reason".
I can't really think of a more dangerous way of thinking about policy besides only thinking about how it relates to your immediate circle. That's exactly how cronyists think. It doesn't make it better that she's well-meaning.
Why should Reason pile on?
Why, to run her picture. For which I thank them.
She is a cutie.
So, you and Warty are the type to find little miss dead-eyes attractive? Strange, but to each their own.
Eyes?
I thought the fact that she looks pretty baked in that photo was part of the joke.
Marijuana policy: so easy, even a beauty queen can get it right. Yet, somehow, beyond the ability of our Ruling Class.
Here's a gem from Miss New York (the eventual winner), when asked about armed guards in schools:
"I don't think the proper way to fight violence is with violence. I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways that we can use them properly. We can lock them up; we can have gun safety classes; we can have a longer waiting period. The answer is not to fight violence with violence, however,"
http://www.washingtontimes.com.....z2Hy7yA8ZN
Now that is worthy of ridicule. She doesn't think violence can be fought with violence. So I guess if some guy breaks into her house with ill intentions, she will just talk him out of it and educate him.
Now that is worthy of ridicule.
They're beautiful to look at, but it's barderline painful to hear them try to speak.
Now that is worthy of ridicule.
That doesn't seem like a very Christian attitude.
God loves stupid people. I am little less forgiving.
I don't really have a problem with her "Don't fight violence with violence" thing, so long as she allows me to fight violence with the threat of violence (which it looks like she doesn't). I want a heavily armed but very forgiving populace, the kind that walks an intruder out at gunpoint and asks him to mark that day on his calendar as the luckiest day of his life.
Broseph, I think you have an unrealistic idea of what an armed confrontation looks like.
Maybe. I've been in two, both in South Africa where only one side was armed and outdoors. I imagine I'd react much differently in my own house with an armed intruder.
No wonder she won. Maybe at the next school massacre the students can all hold a Ghandi-esque sitdown strike.
No wonder she won. Maybe at the next school massacre the students can all hold a Ghandi-esque sitdown strike.
Yeah, but "strike" implies resistance, or at least noncooperation, which I hear is bad, as it might further upset the shooter.
No it's totally cool if Ghandi did it.
Buffy: Hey Ken, wanna see my impression of Gandhi?
[beats him to death with a club]
Lily: Gandhi?
Buffy: Well, you know, he was really pissed-off.
Ghandi was not in favor of gun control.
Because Newtown wouldn't have happened if only Adam Lanza had gone to a gun safety class....
And I'm assuming she also is in favor of taking guns away from police, etc. Because you can't fight violence with violence.
Then dismantle the government, which by definition is violently coercive, right?
I don't think it should be used for anything but recreational use and health care.
A major improvement over current policy.
I think the proper way is to educate people on guns and the ways that we can use them properly.
Like only allowing trained Law Enforcement Professionals have access to them. Mayor Bloomberg approves, and would be delighted to find a position in his administration for this thoughtful and intellectually mature young lady.
Guns should only be used medicinally or recreationally.
In what way is using a gun for self-defense not using it properly?
Bloomberg = pot smoking prohibitionist hypocrite.
I think she meant it shouldn't be used for making money.
Sen. Schumer Asks Gun Retailers To Stop Sales As Congress Debates
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I think they've already made enough money to take a month off. Besides, it'll give the manufacturers a chance to catch up with back orders.
I agree, marijuana should be grown for "Recreational Use and Health Care"
If I had to guess, I'd say she doesn't know what the word 'recreational' means.
Maybe she thought it was a variation of the word "recreate"? So, she thought it could be used for recreating crimes - you know, to better convict the drug criminals.
